So now it’s time for us to “party in print.” Jeff Blackman: You are ... ? Brian Cascarano: Director of marketing at Scott Byron & Co., a landscape architect, construction and maintenance firm providing services for residential and commercial properties from the Gold Coast to Lake Geneva. JB: You transitioned to landscaping after a financial services career. How come? BC: When I learned Scott Byron was seeking a marketing professional, I was intrigued. My background was in sales, business-development and marketing in commercial equipment leasing. Marketing beautiful outdoor spaces is more enjoyable. JB: Your challenges are ... ? BC: We serve busy, successful people at the market’s higher-end, so it’s challenging to communicate value to an audience with limited time. That’s why they rely on us — to handle everything in a pain-free manner. Plus, we guarantee our work. JB: With landscaping, what do folks want? BC: A fun place to entertain, enjoy family time and unwind in a private oasis away from daily stresses. Our solutions relate to stylistic composition and geometry, creating unique spaces emphasizing movement, enclosure and grade changes. The core of our designs is the customer’s goals. JB: How do you sell value vs. price? BC: First-time homeowners often choose the lowest cost, and learn it’s often the costliest outcome. Our decades of successful experience and deep industry knowledge contribute to the long life of our work. Clients appreciate our high standard of care and are willing to pay a little more to enjoy their outdoor space without worrying about details. JB: Once at Scott Byron, how often were you required to watch Edward Scissorhands? BC: Never. But I’ve learned pruning is an art form. Do it incorrectly and the plant dies or looks awful. Our crewmen have been honing this craft for years. JB: You, your wife, Tracey, and your home have a unique history ... BC: We’re the third generation to live in our Swainwood home that Tracey’s grandparents built in 1941. We acquired and renovated the home in 2002 when her parents downsized. We originally moved to Swainwood in 1986 and learned about the neighborhood’s early years from Tracey’s mother, Donna Cormack — one of the early students at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and a lifelong parishioner at the church. JB: Your sons Patrick, Sean and Brennan had memorable ‘careers’ at GBS. What do you remember and miss?
