44 | November 9, 2017 | The frankfort station sports frankfortstation.com Wrestling for the ages New Frankfort Gladiators Wrestling Club begins inaugural season Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor What began as an idea and morphed into a wrestling camp for the past two years has now become a full-season of wrestling. The Frankfort Gladiators Wrestling Club began its inaugural season Friday, Nov. 3, with about 50 young wrestlers, ages 4 to 14. It’s a wide age range, but coach Matt Schedin said it gives children an opportunity to try the sport at a young age and hone their skills as they get older. Schedin said he and the other two founders, Dave Lorimer and Jerry Donelly, created the group when they saw a need for a local youth wrestling club. The last two years, their efforts have gone into a beginner wrestling camp hosted through the park district. Schedin said interest in the camp doubled last year, so they decided it was time to start a full-season club for the children in Frankfort. “It was our intent to build up a program for all these kids who didn’t know about wrestling and offer it to them locally,” Schedin said. In addition to the three main coaches, who all have a background in wrestling, there are a handful of volunteer assistant coaches who offer their talents each week as well. Although the group warms up together, Schedin said they then split into their various age groups to work on agespecific training. That training isn’t all take-downs and escapes. Photo submitted key — you have to keep it fun,” Schedin said. “You’re literally only good, as far as attention span, for probably 45 minutes out of the two hour practice.” He said incorporating games helps keep the younger wrestlers involved while still learning. Knowledge of the sport ant the proper way to execute each movement is an important part of the club's philosophy as well. “The thing we’re really priding ourselves [on] at Gladiator is understanding just the basic good, hard, fundamental, basic wrestling, Schedin said, “learning the basics, understand what you’re doing — that’s kind of our motto is understand what you’re doing — and, then you can progress from there.” Schedin said the club will offer opportunities for the children to work with wrestlers from other clubs during exhibitions, as well as during practices to help switch up their routine. “Sometimes you get stale working with the same partners,” he said. “You know what’s going to come from your partner, but if you get the chance to work out with 15 different kids you don’t know, you’re going to be constantly challenged.” Wrestling may seem like a risky sport from an onlookers perspective, but Schedin said proper teaching can prevent injuries in the sport. “When we teach the techniques, we teach them to do them correctly, so you don’t hurt yourself and you don’t hurt your partner,” Schedin said. “Essentially, wrestling looks grueling and tough, but, really, when it’s done correctly no one really gets hurt.” He said the coaches work with the children to practices the techniques slowly at first and getting progressively faster “So they understand what’s going on so they don’t hurt each other.” “That’s what we’re trying to provide,” Schedin said, “a fun, safe, comfortable environment where they work hard [and] they have fun but then they want to come back and they want to bring their friends.” football From Page 46 from the East 39, when quarterback Clayton Isbell connected with Matthew Goetsch for a 16-yard play. But at this stage of the game, it’s survive and advance. “Whether it was 35-7 or 15-14 on a last-second field goal, I guess we’re going to advance,” Zvonar said. “I’m just proud of our kids. We talk about it being a 48-minute game, and we had to play about 47 [minutes] and 30- plus seconds to get what we needed to get.” Now, for the second straight season, the Griffins will play in the Class 8A quarterfinals. They will host Oswego, who defeated Glenbard West 24-20 in the second round.

The team features student-athletes from Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln- Way West, Providence Catholic, Andrew, Tinley Park, Lockport Township and Sandburg high schools. Compiled by 22nd Century Media staff Forwards Silvio Gkizas, senior, Providence 35 goals, 28 assists. All- Sectional, All-CCL. Gkizas had the ability to create something out of nothing, proving to be a gamechanging player who put up video game numbers. MidFielders Kyle Seymour, senior, LW West 17 goals, 6 assists. All-SWSC. The Warriors’ captain was the most explosive offensive threat for his team and seemed to be involved in every play. deFenders First team Vasili Vouris, senior, Sandburg 3 goals, 3 assists. All- Sectional, All-SWSC. Vouris helped shut down offensive lines this season, combining with keeper Connor Baker to allow only 13 goals. second team Forward Dan Repa, junior, Andrew 10 goals, 2 assists. All-Sectional Honorable Mention. Jordan Abbasi, senior, LW East 8 goals, 7 assists. All- Sectional, All-SWSC. David Flores, junior, LW West 5 goals, 9 assists. Goalie Scott Slocum, senior, Providence 30 goals, 9 assists. All- Sectional, All-CCL. Slocum showed the ability to find the back of the net regularly, working to be a great leader for his team over the course of the season. Brett Hudak, junior, Tinley 16 goals, 3 assists. All- Sectional, All-SSC. Hudak repeated and improved upon everything great about his sophomore season, scoring two more goals than last season and adding three assists. Connor Baker, junior, Sandburg 9 shutouts, .72 goals against average. Baker was fast at reading the field and helped give Sandburg a chance all season long. Jimmy Margas, senior, Sandburg 12 goals, 4 assists. All- Sectional, All-SWSC. Fast and versatile, Margas played with a lot of heart, proving to be a driving force in the Eagles’ offensive attack. Luke James, senior, LW West 4 goals, 16 assists. All- SWSC. One of the Warriors’ most consistent defenders, James dished out great passes all season, sparking the West offense. Nick Kowalczyk, junior, Lockport 15 goals, All-SWSC. There is a reason Kowalczyk was named Player of the Year for the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division. Frank Dicosola, senior, LW East 8 goals, 8 assists. All-Sectional, All-SWSC. Dicosola proved to be East’s fantastic counterpart to forward Jordan Abbasi this season. Justin Biela, junior, Lockport All-SWSC. The defender was an anchor for the Porters’ defense this season and possessed the ability to create scoring chances.
