Letter sent home from the battle fields of France from James Ernest Brown who<br />
was homesteading north east of Oyen when he joined. After the war he settled<br />
north west of Castor in the Lauderdale district where he farmed. His sister Bertha,<br />
that he wrote the letter to, later married Will Hewitt from Bulwark.<br />
Dear Bertha<br />
France, July 6, 1917<br />
Dear Bertha,<br />
I went down this evening to inquire<br />
about Archie Brown.<br />
Sorry I could not do it sooner but<br />
this was my first opportunity.<br />
I talked with his platoon Sergeant<br />
and several others. The Sergeant told<br />
me that he was killed instantly and<br />
also where he was buried.<br />
I will try and look up the place if I<br />
get the opportunity and will see what<br />
has been done and will do my best to<br />
get it attended to.<br />
He was a Lance Corporal and was in<br />
charge of an advanced bombing post.<br />
The shell that killed him wounded several<br />
others I understand.<br />
He was killed within a few hundred<br />
yards of the place I told you in the last<br />
letter, that is the village taken on the<br />
day he was killed.<br />
I can remember the time quite well.<br />
It is one of the times I will never<br />
forget.<br />
From what the Sergeant told me I<br />
was probably about five hundred yds<br />
from him at the<br />
time.<br />
I am going to<br />
see his brigade<br />
padre as I think<br />
he can probably<br />
give me some further<br />
particulars<br />
and if he were to<br />
write he would<br />
undoubtably be<br />
able to take more<br />
liberties with the<br />
censor than I.<br />
This is about all<br />
I can say except to<br />
repeat that I will<br />
see what has been<br />
done and can be<br />
done to mark his<br />
grave.<br />
Three of us<br />
were detailed for a<br />
certain duty that<br />
night or rather<br />
morning and we<br />
had rather an<br />
exciting time.<br />
One of us, the<br />
corporal got separated<br />
and the<br />
other chap and I<br />
had to carry on.<br />
We succeeded in<br />
doing the job and<br />
when it was over we found him but<br />
until then thought he had been hit.<br />
The work I was on gave me a good<br />
view of all that took place.<br />
