RCVS Mind Matters Initiative, and would encourage you to consider entering.
The Awards are open to UK practices, branch surgeries or other organisations
who employ vets or vet nurses. They were created to highlight wellbeing in the
veterinary profession and celebrate workplaces where:
• health and happiness are valued
• there are systems and initiatives that motivate
• staff are engaged
• communication is positive
• there is commitment to being a better place to work
Stress management is also a legal H&S requirement and research shows that a
happy, healthy workforce improves productivity and staff retention.
The Vet Wellbeing Award entries are open to practices of all sizes throughout the
UK and entries can be made now via the website
www.vetwellbeingawards.org.uk.
Health and Safety Bulletin - November 2017
Take care when handling inpatients
An incident has occurred at an IVC practice where three nurses may have been exposed to a chemotherapy drug.
A patient was admitted that day and was taking a chemotherapy drug in tablet form and had to stay in the hospital overnight and over the weekend. The care
assistants that were working cleaned out the kennel and handled the patient without taking proper precautions to prevent exposure. Gloves were worn but it
has become apparent that saliva, urine or faeces from the patient could have potentially gone on either of the three nurses’ skin via handling the patient or
splash back from cleaning the kennel.
When an incident like this happens, IVC suggest the following precautions are met:
1. The Theatre Manager should ensure the incident is recorded in the accident book.
2. The Theatre Manager should advise staff affected seek advice from their GP.
3. Procedures to be revised at the practice, to ensure that staff must be informed during handover if any patients are taking any cytotoxic medication.
Unfortunately, incidents like this can easily occur but on the other hand are preventable. Just remember to communicate well
during handover and record as much information as possible on your inpatients.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will gladly assist.
REMINDERS
Safety Media Online H&S Training Link: http://www.safetylearning.co.uk/login/independentvetcare
Accident Statistics: these are to be sent in every quarter (previously annual) at the end of Mar/Jun/Sept/Dec.
Remember, all employees have a duty to take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your
actions at work. If an employee notices anything that may affect yourself or anyone around you at work, it is their responsibility,
as well as the employer’s, to report it.
Pet Health Club Update
Plan Update
October was another fantastic month and we’re delighted to say that we have now reached a
whopping
preventative health care. Fantastic work!
Pimp Your Practice
Due to popular demand, we have decided to extend the Pimp Your Practice competition until the 30 th
November!
Application Process Update
We are aware that there has been some confusion surrounding the sending of application forms to
Animal Healthcare and so we wanted to clarify the process, as we understand this may have changed
since your launch training was completed:
• For any new sign ups, once the application form has been completed, it should be scanned and
emailed across to Animal Healthcare so they have a copy of the direct debit and client signature on
file. The original forms should then be shredded. It is important that the email account used is
password protected for data protection purposes. If you are using an email address that is shared
with multiple users, we would recommend that you delete the emails once sent. We would also
advise deleting the forms from your scanned documents folder on a regular basis. Alternatively, you
can fax the forms if you would prefer.
• For any existing plans where the forms were not sent to Animal Healthcare, we would advise that
these are kept in a locked cabinet but ideally they should be scanned, attached to the patient file and
the originals shredded. When scanning, we would recommend that the bank details are covered or
the bottom of the application form is removed to ensure that we do not store the bank details. It is
also important to ensure that all computers are locked when not in use.
too!
to highlight the cost price food savings and don’t forget that there are client welcome packs
available from Think Marketing (plus lots of other handy items!)

3. Next Appointment and Reminders – Ensure your clients details are up to date in your PMS
system for iRecall to work effectively (Jupiter surgeries – don’t forget to use the Client Details
Checker!)
Book the next relevant appointment – weight check, dental check, flea and worm check etc...
(6 month health check or booster at a minimum). This really helps clients to feel the value of
the plan!
4. Planniversary – Reward your client’s loyalty by sending them a £10 planniversary voucher
at renewal. A list of renewed plans can be pulled from the Animal Healthcare portal.

CLIPPER
Using the Clipper allows you to track the patients you have looked at throughout the day. Staff may find this useful, to
remind themselves of which clients they need to contact etc…
1) Find the relevant
client and patient
using the
RECEPTION screen.
Highlight the
patient you require,
with a single click
and select CLIPPER.
2) Once added, a
pop-up window will
appear, stating the
patient has been
added to the
clipper.
Clipper sits on the left hand side of the
screen when in the reception screen.
When you are in the Patient’s records,
the clipper tab will have moved to the
bottom of the screen.
3) You can access clipper anytime
by selecting the CLIPPER on the
left hand side of the screen. The
clipper box appear and will show
you who has been added. To
access the individual records, just
double click on the one you want,
it will take you straight to their
record.
4) To remove someone from
the clipper, select DELETE or
alternatively, to delete all,
select CLEAR.

Medicine Service on Monday at Rowe Referrals
Introducing Dr Kate Murphy ….
I thought it would be helpful to briefly introduce myself and the chronic medicine clinic which I will be offering from Rowe Referrals most Mondays.
I qualified from Bristol approximately 20 years ago and did my post-graduate residency there. After my residency, I worked at Rowe for 2 years seeing
referral cases and doing some first opinion sessions. I then returned to Bristol and ran the ICU and medicine referral service for 9 years and then
worked at Bath Referrals for 3 years and most recently was Clinical Director at Highcroft Referrals for 3 years. I have mainly seen chronic medical
cases since entering private referral practice and feel these are the most appropriate cases to see with a 1-day per week clinic. In addition to the
clinic at Rowe, I am also working for Idexx as an Internal Medicine Consultant Tuesday – Friday.
At Rowe, I will be consulting on a Monday morning and ideal cases will be patients with chronic vomiting or diarrhoea, chronic cough, sneezing or
nasal discharge. I am very happy for patients to have had recent full bloods performed before referral and abdominal imaging in vomiting/diarrhoea
cases. I can provide more guidance on the bloods that are useful in such cases when needed. I will not be seeing acutely unwell cases as it would be
unfair on the clients, pets and colleagues in the hospital with me only being in the building one-day per week, however I will happily discuss other
cases and advice appropriately.
If you have any queries regarding possible referrals please direct enquiries via the referrals reception and I will try to respond
as quickly as possible.
I look forward to working with you,
Kind regards
