STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
Tech Night: November 2017

Street photography is a type of photography that features subjects in candid
situations of life and human nature within ‘public’ places.
Documenting humanity in public spaces
Street photographs are mirror images of society, displaying “unmanipulated
scenes, with usually unaware subjects.”
Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the
urban environment. ‘Street’ simply refers to a place where human activity can be
seen, a place to observe and capture social interaction.
‘Street photography needs to show humanity or society’. Generally street
photographs have people in them but they don’t necessarily have to have
people in them as long as there is a sense of society and not just a record of a
building (architectural photography) or a landscape with a few people featured.
DEFINITIONS? – I PREFER GUIDELINES

The key difference is that documentary photography has an
intention to record a moment in time for history.
‘Street photography produces ironic amusement while
documentary provides emotional intensity’
Documentary style often has a premediated message
Different countries have different ‘rules’ and restrictions
Generally you can use photographs taken in public places for artistic
purposes, without the need for a model release. This means you can
sell them as fine art prints, or as illustrations for books or cards.
However, you cannot use these images for commercial or
advertising purposes without a model release of any person in the
image. You cannot use the image to promote a product.
NIGHT STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Always think COMPOSITION
NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Bump up your ISO
Grain/Noise can work for you!
Accept the gritty look of the night
NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Capture Motion
Panning
Slow shutter speed is easy at night!
Tripod often not the best
But if you use one - Experiment with slower shutter speeds, such as
1/8th of a second and take a lot of images – and use the impact
of blurred movements.
NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Use prime lenses
They often have a much wider aperture available
NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Manual focus may be required
Prefocus
Wait for action to come into your scene
NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Look for the light in the dark
Don’t use flash
Shooting street photography at night allows for much more
mysterious scenes and images than shooting during the day
NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Camera Settings
Shoot in RAW
A wide-angle lens: the longer the focal length, the faster the
shutter speed is needed for sharp images.
28mm or 35mm lens (up to 50mm) it becomes much easier to
handhold the camera at slower shutter speeds.
Being able to shoot at f/2.8, f/2, or even 1.8 will greatly expand
your opportunities.
You will need to raise your ISO significantly
