PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
CHAD MYERS
It’s hard to believe that as I’m writing this letter, winter
is fast approaching. With temperatures hovering around
90 degrees, it’s hard to imagine that snow will more than
likely be falling in the upcoming months.
We at MPMCA hope everyone had a great summer
and, despite the weather, are preparing for a busy and
prosperous winter.
Make sure to save the date for the annual MPMCA Expo, which
will be held at Soaring Eagle’s Casino and Resort. The Expo will
be held on March 14, 2018, and will feature all the latest and
greatest technology our industry has to offer. This is one of the
largest expositions of plumbing, heating and cooling products
in Michigan with over 3,000 products from more than 400
manufacturers. The show is always free of charge to contractors,
rep agencies, installers, inspectors, wholesalers, and engineers.
Be sure to mark your calendar to get the updates on the latest
products our industry has to offer. Soaring Eagle Casino and
Resort will not disappoint and offers several activities including
entertainment, restaurants, and gaming as well as a host of other
amenities. We hope to see you and your staff there.
Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning is probably one of the
most underrated technologies in the United States. Arguably,
plumbing ranks very high in lives saved over the years with
clean water delivery, backflow
prevention, sanitation, and
filtration. Also, imagine
hospitals, grocery stores, and the
like with no air conditioning or
refrigeration to rely on to keep
patients comfortable, deliver
medical gases, or keep groceries
preserved. It’s hard to imagine
what life would have been like
just over 100 years ago with none
of these technologies available or
at least widely used. The next time you see a plumber, HVAC
tech, or installer, be sure to thank them for making all of our
lives much more enjoyable. As you make your way to the Expo
in the spring, reflect on what technologies have progressed over
the years and how proud we all should be to be a part of such an
important trade.
Please come and join us at the Expo in 2018; we hope to see you
all there.
Sincerely,
Chad Myers
2017 INSTRUCTOR TRAINING PROGRAM
August 12-18 – Ann Arbor
The United Association returned to the campus of Washtenaw Community College in August for the UA Instructor Training
Program. What follows is a recap of some of their training activities.
CLASSES
Methods in Teaching Advanced Shielded Metal Arc Welding
(SMAW)
This train-the-trainer course, specifically designed for local union welding instructors,
covered advanced pipe welding techniques used in such applications as heavy wall
piping and welding alloys.
The course focused on “how to teach” advanced techniques of shielded metal arc
welding and process variables for a variety of materials. This course provided local
unions a means of preparing their apprentices and address industry’s welding needs.
Operation of the UA Trailers
UA student instructors learned how to
present classes utilizing the equipment and
trainers contained within the UA training
trailers as they apply to the mechanical and
plumbing systems.
Installed and serviced by UA members, UA
instructors learned the best practices for
teaching with the training trailers. Trailer
and equipment safety, proper setup and
repacking, operation of the onboard generator, audio video systems, fuel, electrical and water
hookups were covered. Training trailers covered in this course were: UA Plumbing Service
Demonstration Training Trailer, the UA Welder Demonstration Training Trailer, the UA
Sustainable Technologies Demonstration Training Trailer, the UA Trades Demonstration
Training Trailer and the UA Service Tech Mobile Lab. The training trailer event scheduling
and transportation policies were covered as well.
OSHA 7110: Safe Bolting Practices
Bolted joints are a part of virtually every industrial process. The proper assembly of the essential connections puts UA craftsmen in
close proximity with powerful tools, extreme forces, hazardous materials, elevated temperatures, and pressures, often in dangerous
places. Perhaps no other piping activity demands a greater degree of safety awareness and basic “best practices’ training. This NEW
class included both lecture and a practical hands-on lab. The course was designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills
to safely and properly assemble bolted flange joints. The attendees learned how to
inspect, assemble, and tighten bolted joint connections utilizing the industry required
controlled bolting terminology, tooling and related technical areas including safety.
Additionally, participants learned proficiency in power torqueing and tensioning.
Course participants received an OSHA 7110 Certificate, providing them the ability
to conduct bolted joint training at the local level. When this training is offered at the
local training center, participating UA members will receive a UA/CPWR/Hytorc
Completion Card.
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing
(PAUT) of Piping Welds
GREATER MICHIGAN
We are seeing more and more industrial projects using a new form of
ultrasonic testing method to inspect piping welds in lieu of radiographic
(x-ray) inspection. Compared with radiography, Phased Array Ultrasonic
Testing (PAUT) offers the advantage of process control, as welds can
be inspected soon after completion and feedback can be given rapidly
to the welding crew. PAUT is superior to Radiographic Testing (RT) at
finding lack of fusion defects, especially side wall lack of fusion, as well as
cracks and incomplete penetration type root defects. This NEW course
was designed to familiarize the participants in the basic principles behind Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing with a goal to become
familiar with the displayed information and approaches to analyze test results for determining the location, size, and characterization
of weld defects. In addition, the course addressed the key steps to passing PAUT weld inspections. The course curriculum included
presentations, resources, and hands-on demonstrations of the PAUT equipment.
The UA’s
International
continues
to increase
the focus on
recruiting underrepresented
workers,
including women, to address the growing workforce shortage
and to expand opportunities for promising individuals. Their
goal is to inspire women to apply for their apprenticeship
programs. In an effort to inspire women to apply for the UA apprenticeship program, a Roundtable was held during the ITR. The
purpose was to work jointly and help the UA find ways to overcome common misconceptions about the piping industry when it comes
to recruiting women into our trade. Attendees were encouraged to give suggestions on how we can increase entering into the trades. The
course curriculum included presentations, resources, and hands-on demonstrations of the PAUT equipment.
2017 GREATFUTURES
FORUM
MCAA’s 2017 GreatFutures Forum kicked off with the Futures
Fest career fair on September 28th.
Chapter Members pictured above with MCAA
Executive Vice President John Gentile
The first‐ever such event for this conference was a huge success.
Representatives from almost 40 participating MCAA member
companies were on hand to connect with hundreds of students.
Conversation was plentiful, with discussions focused around
the employment and internship opportunities available at each
company. The event facilitated two matches. Cole Zeiler found his great future with HMH Contractors, Inc. and Kenneth Bankard
found his with F.E. Moran, Inc. Congratulations to MCAA members and students alike!
If being hired wasn’t enough, the students each
received a $500 gift card. Their employers
qualified for a reward in the form of a $1,000
internship grant, our way of saying “thanks”
for giving a bright, well-educated future
professional his or her start on a great career.
Space was available throughout the conference
to continue the conversations with more
extensive interviews. Those hired, and those
who do the hiring, qualified for the same
rewards throughout the conference.
Career Career Development Committee Member Jon Finch noted that
MCAA’s annual career‐related conference has grown from an event
with 60 attendees to this year’s more than 300. MCAA President Greg
Fuller welcomed attendees to his hometown of Indianapolis, saying
“I’m delighted to note that this year we have our largest attendance
ever, by a wide margin.” His remarks highlighted the opportunities the
mechanical industry offers, both in terms of great futures and lifelong
learning available from MCAA.
SAFETY
PAYS
SPECIALTY CONTRACTORS WORKERS
COMPENSATION GROUP PROGRAM
Participating Businesses Share Workers’ Compensation Group Dividend from
Accident Fund Insurance Company of America
More than 50 businesses
will share over
$180,000 premium
dividend thanks to
safe work practices and
their participation in Michigan Plumbing
& Mechanical Contractors Association’s
Workers Compensation Group Dividend
Program. This program is available
through the Specialty Contractors
Workers’ Compensation Group Program
who belong to one of the following
trade associations; Michigan Plumbing
& Mechanical Contractors Association,
Michigan Chapter of the Sheet Metal &
Air Conditioning National Association,
the Michigan Chapter of the National
Electrical Contractors Association.
The dividend returned is based on each
participant’s premium costs and range
from $120 to over $14,000, with an
average dividend of over $1,500.
In addition to dividend opportunities, the
Specialty Contractors dividend program
offers participating businesses a 5 percent
discount on their workers’ compensation
insurance premium rates.
While keeping people healthy and injuryfree
is vital in its own right, it is also an
important factor in the ability to earn a
dividend. Safety at work leads to fewer
injuries and fewer workers’ compensation
claims.
“It’s a fact – safety pays. A safe work
environment is not only great for
employees, it’s great for the bottom line,”
said Accident Fund’s group program
consultant. “We’re proud to be able to
present the Specialty Contractors Group
with this dividend for members in this
program.”
Accident Fund’s Loss Control consultants
work with policyholders on safe work
practices and teach employee safety
training. The company also offers an
online “tool box” where policyholders can
link to federal and state workplace safety
websites.
“Encouraging safety in the workplace
while offering an Association-only plan
that can provide real money back is
definitely a win-win situation,” said
Cynthia Maher, Executive Director of
the Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical
Contractors Association. “The Accident
Fund Workers’ Compensation Program is
one of many innovative strategies we have
put in place to help our members more
effectively control their costs.”
FORCES OF
NATURE
– You Need a Disaster Plan
Natural disasters can occur anytime and can destroy
years of hard work in an instant. With proper
planning, their impact on your livelihood can be
minimized. If you haven’t developed a disaster plan
for your business, or need to update your current
plan, the following steps may help.*
Step 1 – Research your business’s exposures and the
options available to minimize them.
Step 2 – Create a disaster recovery plan.
• Identify risks from natural and man-made disasters.
• Classify operations critical to your business’s survival.
• Document current employee contact information.
• Know your key customers, suppliers, contacts, and vendors.
• Establish information technology needs.
• Determine your business’s financial needs following a disaster.
Step 3 – Backup Your Plan
• Make it available anytime, anywhere.
• Be sure it’s accessible even when you can’t enter your facility.
• Print a copy, and also store it electronically.
• Regularly backup vital data and records and store a copy
off-site.
A community cannot survive a disaster unless businesses survive,
and businesses cannot survive unless their employees survive.
Mother Nature doesn’t care who’s in her way. Developing a
functional, practical disaster plan can help protect your business,
your employees, and your future, and help you manage potential
disasters with the confidence of knowing your business has
prepared to carry on.
As a member of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home
Safety® (IBHS), Federated provides many valuable disaster and
recovery planning resources to clients at no cost. The IBHS
Disaster Safety website offers a ZIP Code tool to identify risks
specific to a geographical region, and OFB-ES business continuity
tool to help even the smallest businesses plan for recovery. For
more information, visit http://disastersafety.org, or contact your
local Federated marketing representative or Federated’s Risk
Management Resource Center at 1-888-333-4949.
*List is not all inclusive. Your unique needs and business
requirements must be considered when developing a disaster
recovery plan.
Step 4 – Educate employees on the plan, and keep them
informed of their responsibilities.
• Test the business continuity plan periodically.
• Encourage employees to also prepare themselves and their
families for disasters.
Step 5 – Periodically review, practice, and update your
plan.
