We usually don’t give our spines much thought, 

that is, unless this critical part of our body 

starts grousing back at us. Only when the back pain

THE PLAGUE OF 

BACK PAIN: 

PREVENT IT BEFORE IT STRIKES

According to reports from the World 

Health Organization, more people in 

the United States are disabled from 

work as a result of musculoskeletal 

disorders — especially back pain — 

than from any other group of diseases. 

When back pain strikes, sufferers may reach 

for over-the-counter drugs, grab heating pads, 

take to bed or head to the doctor. Once there, 

some request surgery, thinking it will provide immediate 

relief. 

Not so fast, said Dr. M. Gordon Whitbeck Jr., 

a fellowship trained orthopaedic spine surgeon 

with Rochester (N.Y.) Regional Health’s Whitbeck 

Spinal Associates. 

“The chance for a good to excellent result (after 

surgery) for low back pain is 65 percent to 75 

percent,” he explained, adding that you probably 

wouldn’t buy a new car if there were a 30 percent 

chance that it wouldn’t run. 

The best thing to do? Avoid it in the first place 

with preventive measures. One place to start is 

quitting smoking. 

“Studies have found that smoking is deleterious 

to the health of intervertebral disks,” Whitbeck 

said. “Nicotine and other substances lead to 

greater disk degeneration.” 

Being sedentary also promotes low back pain, 

explained Elizabeth Wetmore, a coordinator of 

the Spine Rehabilitation Program at UR Medicine’s 

Sports and Spine Rehabilitation. 

“Staying active is so important in a society 

where we sit too much and sit with poor posture,” 

Wetmore said. 

Part of the problem is sitting and slouching. 

“Most people know they slouch,” she said. 

“We spend weeks or months slouched over a 

computer or a smartphone.” 

“It’s a huge problem,” Wetmore said. “People 

come in experiencing chronic neck pain. They 

don’t realize bending over a smartphone for long 

periods of time every day can be the equivalent 

of some 50 pounds of stress (on the neck).” 

An alternative to “cellphone hunch posture,” 

she said, is to “hold the phone up level to your 


face while your thumbs are 

clicking over the 

keys.” 

Maintaining a good BMI ratio (body mass 

index, the measure of body fat based 

on height and weight) is crucial to a 

healthy back. Without some exercise, e, 

weight inevitably will increase. 

Morbid obesity’s effect on 

the 

entire body — hips and knees 

— is obvious, but a BMI above 

30 affects the spine and can 

increase low back pain. 

Even brief walks are 

helpful, Wetmore said, 

“but depending on what 

people can do and their 

flexibility, doing planks 

and bridges are important 

also.” 

Most people have 

heard the warning about 

bending at the knees 

not the waist to pick 

up something, but few 

make the connection 

between a pattern of 

prolonged sitting and low 

back pain. 

Whitbeck said the solution 

can be as simple as 

“getting up to stand or walk 

around a bit every hour.” 

When it comes to exercise, 

what’s good for your 

overall health is good for your 

back, Whitbeck said: low-impact 

aerobic exercise — walking, swimming 

or cycling; resistant t or bearing activity like lifting weights; and 

weight- 

strengthening the abdominal muscles 

that support the back. 

“Pilates, crunches, planks are good. Yoga 

is also good for developing flexibility,” Whitbeck 

said. 

But when people do experience back pain, they 

sometimes opt for braces to ease the pain, or manipulation 

or electrical stimulation in a doctor’s office. 

Wetmore is not a proponent pon 

of braces. “If people use braces, they’re 

not requiring their muscles to work. The only exception is for those people identified as ‘industrial 

athletes’—people whose work requires lifting or restocking heavy items all day or who have a high risk 

history of injuries.” 

Manipulation, similar to treatments used in chiropractic offices, and electrical stimulation are also 

options at the Spine Rehabilitation Program where she works. 

“Nerves can’t carry two impulses, so the electrical stimulation will override the pain,” Wetmore 

explains. 

Local health care practitioners are readying for more back pain complaints as people do more activities 

with the onset of summer. 

In the end, when everything in your painful back says “Don’t move a muscle,” remember that it’s 

important to set yourself in motion. It’s just like the philosopher William James suggests, “Nothing 

changes until something moves,” and the “something” has to be you.

BUT IT MAY NOT BE THE HEALTHIEST STATE OF MIND.

When Ashley Hartkorn was trying 

to lose weight a few years 

ago, she followed a plan that 

advocated the “cheat day” 

philosophy. Hartkorn would 

adhere to her diet six days a week, but on the 

seventh day, she would indulge in all the foods 

she had been craving the days before. 

“What I learned is that I would take them to 

the extreme,” Hartkorn, of Des Moines, Iowa, 

said. “Every single Sunday, my cheat day, I 

would eat a whole medium pizza, a whole box 

of breadsticks and two cans of soda. And that 

was just one of my meals on Sunday.” 

Despite her once-a-week binges, Hartkorn did 

lose weight, but the changes didn’t stick. 

“My habits weren’t healthy,” she said. “I’ve 

learned since then that if I don’t deprive myself 

during the week, I don’t feel the need to binge; 

I can feel good about the choices I’m making 

instead of feeling like the food is in control.” 

Hartkorn isn’t the only dieter to embrace the 

“cheat day” philosophy — a newly published 

book by “Biggest Loser” trainer Dolvett Quince 

bases its premise entirely on the method. 

The book, “The 3-1-2-1 Diet — Eat and 

Cheat Your Way to Weight Loss,” advocates 

that dieters eat “cleanly,” adhering to a 

1,500-calorie-a-day diet, for three days, 

then follow those days with one “cheat,” or 

indulgence, day. After that, he or she follows 

with two more “clean” days before ending the 

week with one more “cheat” day. 

The plan works, Quince maintains, in part 

because the body’s metabolism revs up when it 

has extra food to digest. 

“Indulging a little during the week isn’t 

going to ruin your diet; it will actually make 

your metabolism work better,” Quince writes. 

“Alternating between ‘clean’ and ‘cheat’ days 

will confuse your body into optimal fat-burning 

performance.” 

It sounds too good to be true — so, is it? 

At least one Iowa nutritionist isn’t a fan of the 

method. 

“I don’t like the terms ‘cheat days’ and ‘clean 

days’ — I advocate more of a well-balanced 

approach,” Katie Paulson, a clinical dietitian 

with Mercy Weight Loss and Nutrition Center in 


Des Moines, said. 

“I also don’t like the fact that consumers are 

bombarded with so much new information; it’s 

hard for them to figure out what’s beneficial 

and what’s not. People who want to lose weight 

are left wondering, ‘What am I supposed to 

believe, and what am I supposed to do?’ In my 

opinion, it helps to stick to a few key things to 

make the process of weight loss less stressful.” 

Paulson suggests rather than “diet” for a set 

number of days and throw caution to the wind 

the rest of the time, people who are trying to 

lose weight are better off focusing on whole 

foods with a nutritional balance as well as 

taking a hard look at their relationships with 

food. 

“When we work with people, we look at 

many things — total calories coming in, physical 

activity, how the person handles stress, what 

his or her relationship is with food in general,” 

Paulson said. “So many things influence how we 

deal with food, and that needs to be looked at 

as a whole package.” 

Paulson said dieters need to understand that 

when it comes to weight loss, there’s no such 

thing as a quick fix. 

“It’s all about getting a balance of nutrition 

while enjoying indulgences in moderation,” 

she said. “When you do that, there’s no need 

for ‘cheating’ because you’re not depriving 

yourself. Focus on eating things that are good 

for you, and eating in a way that you can 

maintain over time, not eating in a way that 

you’re going to lose weight very quickly, then 

turn around and put it back on.” 

An “80-20” or “90-10” way of eating is a 

sensible way to lose weight over time, Paulson 

said. 

“Make 80 percent or 90 percent of your 

choices healthier choices,” she said. “Then the 

other 10 to 20 percent can be indulgences — 

but keep in mind that an indulgence can be 

relatively healthy, like a piece of dark chocolate. 

It doesn’t have to be chocolate cake every day.” 

She said in terms of the big weight-loss 

picture, “cheating” amounts to “trying to cheat 

the system, and there’s no real way to do that.” 

“It all comes down to knowing yourself, 

making good choices, and practicing portion 

control,” Paulson said. “If there were a magic 

way to lose weight that didn’t require any 

lifestyle changes, everyone would be doing it!”

Which health screenings and exams are 

top priorities for 

you? If you’re like most adults, 

monitoring your weight, cholesterol, 

and blood pressure is probably part of your 

health care routine. But what about vision care? 

When adults reach their 40s, they often start 

to notice small changes in their vision, which 

can impact their daily lives and job performance. 

Whether having difficulty reading a book or 

working on a computer screen, such changes can 

be frustrating, but they can often be addressed 

by an eye care professional. 

A comprehensive dilated eye exam is the best 

way to detect diseases and conditions that can 

cause vision loss and blindness. That’s because 

many have no symptoms in their early stages. 

According to the National Eye Institute, 

all adults aged 60 and older should have a 

comprehensive dilated eye exam, with the 

exception of African Americans, who are advised 

to get the exams starting at age 40 due to a 

higher risk of developing glaucoma at an earlier 

age. Even if 

you haven’t experienced any issues with your 

sight, a dilated exam can detect serious eye 

diseases and conditions such as age-related 

macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic eye 

disease, and glaucoma. 

During a dilated eye exam, your eye care 

professional places drops in your eyes to dilate, 

or widen, the pupil. This lets more light enter 

the eye, similar to the way an open door lets 

more light into a dark room and allows your eye 

care professional to get a good look at the back 

of your eyes to examine them for any signs of 

damage or disease. 

Regular eye exams go a long way in helping 

you see well for a lifetime. But there is more you 

can do. Experts at the National Eye Institute 

recommend following these additional steps to 

protect your vision. 

1. Live a healthy lifestyle. Living an overall 

healthy life is good for your eyes. This includes: 

Maintaining a healthy weight. Being 

overweight or obese increases your risk of 

developing diabetes and other systemic 

conditions, which can lead to vision loss 

from diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. 

Eating healthy foods. You’ve heard carrots 

are good for your eyes, but eating a diet 

rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly 

dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or 

collard greens is important for keeping your 

eyes healthy, too. Research has also shown 

there are eye health benefits from eating 

fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as 

salmon, tuna, and halibut. 

Not smoking. Smoking is as bad for 

your eyes as it is for the rest of your 

body. Research has linked smoking to an 

increased risk of developing age-related 

macular degen eration, cataract and optic 

nerve damage, all of which 

can lead to blindness.

2. Know your family history. Talk to your 

family members about their eye health 

history. It’s important to know if anyone 

has been diagnosed with an eye disease 

or condition since many are hereditary. 

This will help to determine if you are at 

higher risk for developing an eye disease or 

condition. 

3. Use protective eyewear. Protect your 

eyes when playing sports, working with 

hazardous materials, or doing chores like 

mowing the lawn. Protective eyewear 

includes safety glasses and goggles, safety 

shields and eye guards specially designed 

to provide the correct protection for a 

certain activity. Most protective eyewear 

lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 

10 times stronger than other plastics. Many 

eye care providers sell protective eyewear, 

as do some sporting goods stores. 

4. Wear sunglasses. Sunglasses are a great 

fashion accessory, but their most important 

job is to protect your eyes from the 

sun’s ultraviolet rays. When purchasing 

sunglasses, look for ones that block out 

99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B 

radiation. Exposure to excess sunlight 

can increase your risk of cataract and 

age-related macular degeneration, tissue 

growth on the white part of eye that can 

cause discomfort 

and blurred vision.

Common Eye Diseases and 

Conditions 

Just as the rest of your body ages, so do the 

eyes. The following are common diseases and 

conditions associated with aging that can be 

detected with proper monitoring from an eye 

care professional: 

Cataract. People who experience this 

clouding of the lens in the eye often report 

increased glare and fading of colors. 

Diabetic eye disease. A complication of 

diabetes and a leading cause of blindness, its 

most common form is diabetic retinopathy, 

which happens when the disease damages 

small blood vessels inside the retina. 

Dry eye. Dry eye can feel like stinging or 

burning, and can lead to blurred vision or 

even vision loss if left untreated. 

Glaucoma. Glaucoma is a group of diseases 

that can damage the eye’s optic nerve and 

result in vision loss and blindness. Openangle 

glaucoma is the most common form of 

the disease. 

Age-related Macular Degeneration. Agerelated 

macular degeneration (AMD) is a 

disease that blurs the sharp, central vision 

you need for “straight-ahead” activities such 

as reading, sewing, and driving. AMD affects 

the macula, the part of the eye that allows 

you to see fine detail.

BPTNearly 1 million children under the age of 

5 are exposed to potentially poisonous 

medications and household chemicals 

every year, according to the Centers for 

Disease Control and Prevention. And more than 

60,000 young children end up in the emergency 

room each year from wrongly ingesting 

medications. 

It’s not only parents who need to be aware of 

the risks; many of these incidents occur outside 

of a child’s home. In fact, in 23 percent of the 

cases in which a child under age 5 mistakenly 

ingested an oral prescription drug, the medication 

belonged to someone who did not live with the 

child, such as an elderly relative or grandparent. 

Medications can be poisonous, too 

Parents know to keep household cleaners and 

other chemicals out of the reach of children, but 

should also be cautious about prescriptions, overthe-counter 

medications and vitamins. 

There is no better time than now to learn more 

about preventing accidental and unintentional 

poisonings. Here are some important tips you can 

share with family and friends. 

Be cautious of colors: Medications are colorful 

and attractive to children and can be mistaken 

for candy. For example, Tums look like SweeTarts, 

and Advil and Ecotrin resemble Skittles or M&M’s. 

Parents should not encourage children to take 

their medication by comparing it to candy, as this 

may lead to improper use. 

Lock it up: Don’t leave your next dose out on 

the counter where a child can reach it. Tightly 

secure caps and lock up all medications and 

vitamins in a cool, dry place. Keep medications 

in their original labeled containers so if there is 

an emergency, you can tell medical personnel 

exactly what the child ingested. 

Do not share: Be sure to remind children that 

they should never share their medications. When 

playing “doctor,” friends and younger siblings of 

those taking a medication are often the recipients, 

leading to an accidental poisoning. This is an 

important message for teens, too, as this behavior 

often leads to prescription-drug abuse. 

How to respond to accidental 

poisonings 

If you suspect a child has ingested a potentially 

poisonous substance, here is what you should do: 

Know your numbers: If the child has collapsed 

or is not breathing, dial 911 immediately. If the 

child is awake and alert, call the poison hotline 

at 800.222.1222 and follow the operator’s 

instructions. If possible, have available the victim’s 

age and weight, the container or bottle of the 

poison, the time of the poison exposure and the 

address where the poisoning occurred. 

Know the signs: Reactions to ingested 

medications or household products may vary. 

Look for signs such as vomiting, drowsiness and 

any residue or odor on the child’s mouth and 

teeth. But know that some products cause no 

immediate symptoms, so if you suspect that 

your child has ingested a potentially hazardous 

substance, call the poison hotline immediately. 

Keep calm: It’s important to remain calm so 

you can effectively communicate with emergency 

personnel. If the child ingested medication, do 

not give anything to the child by mouth until 

advised by the poison control center. If chemicals 

or household products have been swallowed, call 

the poison control center immediately or follow 

the first aid instructions on the label. 

Medications can keep you healthy but can 

be extremely dangerous if taken by the wrong 

person or in the wrong amount. Add in a child’s 

insatiable curiosity, and you have the ingredients 

for a very serious and dangerous situation.

Prevention has become the focus, and 

many aging Americans are turning to 

time-tested methods for keeping their 

bodies and minds healthy so they can live 

longer, higher-quality lives. 

Kristen Johnson, certified personal 

trainer, registered dietician and nutrition 

expert at ontargetliving.com points out 

five time-tested strategies for aging well: 

Daily exercise 

“Daily movement is the real fountain of 

youth. It keeps us healthy from the inside 

out,” says Johnson. 

She notes that quality over quantity is 

what really matters. 

“When it comes to improving overall 

fitness, high-intensity exercise for a 

short amount of time may be much 

more beneficial than low intensity for 

a long amount of time,” Johnson says. 

“Research suggests that fat-burning 

hormones like human growth hormones 

and testosterone are stimulated by 

high-intensity exercise, while fat-storing 

hormones like cortisol may be lowered. 

Try increasing the intensity and frequency 

of your exercise, while decreasing the 

time spent.” 

Superfoods 

The foods you eat influence how you 

look and feel, from glowing and confident 

to lethargic and sick. Selecting foods 

that people have eaten historically as 

nutritional powerhouses can help boost 

overall wellness.

“Superfoods are nutrient-rich foods, such as 

fruits, vegetables, ancient grains, healthy fats 

and lean proteins,” says Johnson. “These foods 

naturally contain high amounts of antioxidants, 

vitamins and minerals, which all contribute to 

healthy aging.” 

A few to focus on: 

Carrots, squash and sweet potatoes are 

extremely beneficial for eye and skin health, 

thanks to high levels of beta-carotene, a 

type of vitamin A. 

Any brightly colored fruits and vegetables 

will have an abundant amount of 

antioxidants, and these help prevent 

oxidation and cell damage. Examples: 

raspberries, kale and cabbage. 

Carbohydrates like healthy grains, beans 

and potatoes help you produce serotonin, 

a calming and satiety hormone that helps 

fight stress and anxiety’s negative effects. 

Nutrients 

Supplements help fill nutritional gaps, 

especially as the aging body requires greater 

amounts of certain vitamins and minerals. 

Johnson points out the importance of omega-3s 

for aging well. 

“Omega-3 fats are essential for getting you 

healthy from the inside out, all while helping 

improve hormonal balance, brain health, weight 

loss and metabolism,” she says. “Omega-3 fats 

are also extremely helpful for healthy skin, hair 

and nails.” 

Her favorite? Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil. “This 

contains EPA and DHA, both of which contribute 

to a healthy heart and brain,” she says. “Cod liver 

oil also helps improve cellular function, energy and

Sleep 

“Chronic lack of sleep is one of the fastest 

ways to age the human body,” Johnson says. 

“Lack of sleep can have a huge impact on the 

appearance of skin, causing fine lines, wrinkles 

and dark under-eye circles. Not getting enough 

sleep can also cause your body to release a stress 

hormone called cortisol.” 

She notes that adequate sleep can positively 

influence cognitive ability, mood, weight loss and 

skin rejuvenation, so it should be a top priority for 

an aging-well routine. While the right amount of 

sleep will vary between individuals, the goal for 

most adults is around 7 to 8 hours a night. 

Social activity 

Human interaction can decrease as people 

age, but it’s more important than ever to form 

and maintain bonds with others. Participating in 

social activity is a fun way to enjoy life and reap 

real health benefits. 

“The American Medical Association has noted 

that stress is the basic cause for more than 60 

percent of all human illnesses and diseases,” 

says Johnson. ‘”When you are socially active and 

surround yourself with people you enjoy, you may 

be less likely to feel lonely, unhappy, or unfulfilled, 

all of which can cause unwanted stress.” 

Finally, there’s no need to become 

overwhelmed; start an aging-well routine by 

taking one small step and building healthy habits 

over time. This is what will lead to long-term 

success. 

“Remember that it’s never too late to start 

living a healthy and happy life,” Johnson says. 

“Give yourself more reasons to smile and laugh!
