Kicking up a stink
Discharge permit, ‘flawed’
marine outfall a big concern
MADELEINE CHAPUT
AFTER years of illegally
discharging raw sewage
into the Hood Point, West
Bank surf line, the Buffalo
City Municipality (BCM) have
finally, in July this year, been
issued with a pre-compliance
letter from the department of
environmental a f fa i r s .
The letter urges BCM to comply with
the National Environmental
Management: Integrated Coastal
Management Act by applying for a
coastal waters discharge permit.
DA executive committee member
Neil Smith has corresponded
tirelessly with the department of
environmental affairs coastal and
marine division on this issue, often to
no avail.
“We ’ve asked them to produce a
permit that they should have issued
to BCM many times, and they’ve so
far, failed to do so. Why was BCM not
issued with a non-compliance notice
previously, and if they were, then why
did they continue with this discharge
into the surf line?” Smith said.
The latest issue regarding the Hood
Point marine outfall is the current
Environmental Impact Assessment
(EIA) in progress to construct a 1.4km
deep water offshore marine outfall
pipeline.
Put forward as a solution to the raw
sewage being pumped into the surf
line/sea, the proposed pipeline will
be extended from the existing valve
chamber and allow effluent to be
discharged offshore or deeper into
the sea.
The EIA for the marine outfall,
however, is fatally flawed for a
number of reasons and has very little
prospect for success.
Among the many issues regarding
the proposed pipeline is the increase
in severity and frequency of storm
surges through climate change.
These storm surges and swells
could easily mean that sewage will be
washed up on the coast of East
London, polluting all ecosystems
including people using the coastal
area for recreation and the adjacent
marine protected areas
“A major concern is also the
management of such infrastructure
by BCM. Given the track record of
BCM, evidenced by the infrastructure
collapse seen around us, we have no
confidence that the municipality will
manage this marine outfall project
adequately to prevent major pollution
events and a total failure of the
s y st e m , ” said Smith.
“The discharging of raw sewage
into the surf line at Hood Point is a
further indication of this. The current
treatment works at Hood Point were
also allowed to deteriorate into a
state of complete disrepair.”
East London Museum scientist
Kevin Cole added that there seems to
be a direct correlation between the
diseases picked up by certain marine
mammals and the level of sewage
pollutants in coastal waters.
“The sewage pumped into the
ocean is definitely contributing
negatively to the wellbeing of some
dolphin species. They already have oil
spills and ships to deal with, we don’t
IN THE PIPELINE: A delegation from Buffalo City Metro visited the Hood Point Sewage Works renovation site in West Bank
in June this year, with BCM mayor Xola Pakati, third from left, inspecting the renovation of the site Picture: FILE
need to add more pollutants to
marine life,” said Cole.
According to Cole, a more viable
solution would be a land-based
sewage works. One of the reasons for
this being the ability to treat the
sewage water and recycle it with a
land-based mechanism.
Despite being on the coast and
receiving more rainfall than inland
areas, Cole insists that East London
needs to become more waterwise as
water is and will continue to be a big
challenge for South Africa.
“Even recycling sewage water into
grey water for inland agriculture can
have lasting beneficial effects,” said
Cole. “It’s surprising that the
proposed pipeline is still being
considered as an option, because of
the various detrimental effects it can
have – not to mention the major
compliance and regulation issues
which still persist.”
The high costs associated with a
land-based sewage treatment plant
seems to be the reason for BCM’s
disregard for such a project.
A Daily Dispatch report in July last
year (BCM’s R1.4bn sewer upgrade)
stated the West Bank Treatment
Centre will be upgraded at an
estimated cost of R53-million.
On June 29 this year, a GO! photo
showed a high-ranking delegation
from BCM in a visit to the Hood Point
Sewage Works renovation site in
West Bank. Mayor Xola Pakati was
among the delegation and it showed
that work had started at the plant.
BCM had not responded at the time
of going to print.
Sundale gives CHOC
Dairy to donate
products to help
their recovery
SUNDALE Free Range
Dairy has committed
to providing the East
London branch of
CHOC (Childhood
Cancer Foundation)
with a regular supply
of dairy products to
aid the recovery
process of children
undergoing treatment.
Cancers in children
tend to be different
from those found in
adults, most often
occurring in the
developing cells like
bone marrow, blood,
kidneys and nervous
system tissues. With
some exceptions,
childhood cancers
tend to respond better
to treatments such as
chemotherapy and
children’s bodies tend
to cope better with
chemotherapy than
adults’ bodies.
Eating the right
foods can help reduce
the side-effects
associated with
chemotherapy, boost
the immune system
and speed healing.
Yoghurt is a good
choice of food to eat
after chemotherapy for
several reasons. The
Cancer Cure
Foundation states that
yoghurt is mild and
bland so it may help to
reduce nausea. It also
contains protein and
calcium, which helps
keeps bones and
First East Londoner to win Ms Africa
THANDEKA NTLONTI
HELPING OTHERS: Newly crowned Ms
Africa 2018 is East London-born Angie
Bryant Picture: K&K PHOTOGRAPHY
EAST London born beauty Angie
Bryant made Buffalo City proud when
she walked away with the title of Ms
Africa 2018 at the Buffelspoort Resort
in the North West recently.
Bryant, who was raised in East
London and now lives in
Johannesburg, was the first East
Londoner to win the title.
“I am still very overwhelmed. I am
grateful for the opportunity,” she said.
“I realise that it could have worked
out differently, but God had it planned
already and I am humbled by this,”
Bryant said.
“This title means that I get to knock
on doors and it opens a bit easier
than before. It also means that the
public eye is watching a bit closer.
“I am hoping this means that
support from African residents will
come easier. It means that I represent
Africa. This is a huge responsibility,
but I know that ‘the people’ are going
to work with me and that this will be
the best year of my life.”
Bryant scooped a handful of prizes
at the awards shows before being
crowned Ms Africa 2018.
She was crowned Dignity Dreams
Queen for 2018, Best Model, Best
Evening Wear, Compliance to tasks,
Best Director’s Gift, Best Judges Gift,
Best Choreographer’s Gift and Best
contestant souvenir.
She joined the pageant scene two
years ago, shortly after her father’s
passing.
“I needed something to fill the void.
I was a fashion model for most of my
life with Just Models under the
direction of Davianne Blignaut [in
East London].
“Pageantry is a whole different ball
game altogether,” she said.
‘Overwhelmed’ Angie Bryant has a
heart to help abused or needy children
“I knew about the pageant since I
started doing pageants. There has
always been a buzz about it in
Johannesburg. I started at the bottom
of the ladder with Pageants SA with
the smaller title and worked my way
up. Ms Africa was the final stage for
me,” said Bryant.
The mother of a three-year-old
daughter described the competition
as tough and said that after the
awards, she ruled herself out of
making the top three.
”When my name was called, it
came as a complete shock.
“Before the gala event started, I
made peace that whatever happens
will be God’s will. If I win I would
praise Him and if I lose I would still
praise Him because He works all
things together for my good.”
The phrase ‘charity begins at home’
is lived out in the Bryant family in
East London.
Last year, Bryant and her family fed
the homeless on Christmas day. She
has a heart especially for abused and
abandoned children and babies.
“I work with Door of Hope locally
and just started working with the
Norman Goosen Memorial Foundation
in East London, however, Dignity
Dreams will take preference for at
least one year,” she said.
As part of the Carnival celebration
at the Buffalo Flats Sports ground
next month, the newly crowned Ms
Africa 2018 will be home and anyone
who would like to be involved or host
stalls can contact her on
072-598-1847 or Donae on
0 8 2 - 6 8 5 - 8 2 07 .
The public are invited to bring a tin
of food and build a tower for the
Guinness Book of Records.
This will all be donated to the
Norman Goosen Memorial Foundation
that feeds hundreds of hungry
children weekly through a lunch box
programme and soup kitchen for
needy kids.
Bryant will land on flight SA475 at
4.55pm on December 1 and East
Londoners are urged to go and give
her a hero’s welcome.
“I have had phenomenal support on
my journey as a Ms Africa finalist. I
am eternally grateful. I ask that you
all stick with me for another year or
more. Let’s take on the world. I have
had a great team of people who
prepared me for the Ms Africa title.
We did it. Let’s continue,” she said.
Dam levels continue to drop
EASTERN Cape dam levels have
dropped from 59.8% to 59.1% this
week, according to a weekly report
issued by the Department of Water
and Sanitation on November 6.
Water Supply Systems show signs
of declining weekly, with the
Amatola System, which has six
dams serving the Buffalo City Metro
having declined from 67.8% to
67.1%, compared to 77.0% last year.
The Algoa System, with five dams
serving Nelson Mandela Bay has
registered a drop from 29.6% to
29.1%, compared to 67.3% last year.
Xilinxa Dam in the Amathole
District Municipality registered at
6.9% this week, compared to 7.0 %
last week.
Gcuwa Dam is standing at 19.2%
this week, compared to 57.9 % last
week – a huge decline of 38.7%.
Nahoon Dam in Buffalo City Metro
(BCM) dropped from 97.6% last
week to 96.1%, a slight decrease of
1.5%, with Bridle Drift, the biggest
dam serving BCM down from 55%
last week to 53.6%.
The Department of Water and
Sanitation is appealing to
communities and businesses to
obey water saving measures as dam
levels across the province continue
to drop due to the current drought
situation that is devastating most
district areas.

MATTER OF FACT
IN THE November 2 edition of the GO! & Express photo and caption on page 4, “Grand Lady” we left one of the owners of the Grosvenor Hotel out by mistake. In the article, we said that the last two owners
of the old hotel in King William’s Town were Mr W Smith and the Stutt Brick Co. Matter of fact, it was owned by Godfrey Clive Ireland-Low before the “Wilsons” or Stutt Brick bought it. Godfrey’s son, Richard
Ireland-Low wrote to the GO! saying: “Prior to the Stutt Group [Wilsons] purchasing the hotel, it belonged to my late father, namely Godfrey Clive Ireland-Low . In fact, my family (Jonathan/Ireland-Low) owned
this business from 1968, having purchased it from the Late Bill Smith, up to the point of sale to the Stutt Group in the 90’s.”. If you have any photo of a historic building or site, you can send it to
Christmas comes early for needy
IT WAS like Christmas came
early for the needy when
about 350 people –
including children – were
served food and handed
clothing to much excitement
at the monthly soup kitchen
run by King William’s Town
The recipients were from
Breidbach, Acorn Valley,
Plateau Extension, Qalashe
and places as far-afield as
Zwelitsha, Sweetwaters and
Tshatshu. Lions Moses, Nici
Naudè, Desmond Coetzee
and Ryan von Abo were
assisted by the Breidbach
Seniors Club at the project.
Prior to the handing out of
clothes, shoes and running
shoes, Moses explained to a
packed hall that they were
doing everything possible to
fulfill their vision of reaching
out to the poor and needy.
“What you have seen and
experienced today is what
we stand for so never fear
the kind donations coming
from our loyal community.”
Coetzee commended his
club for showing ubuntu and
praised the seniors club for
always assisting with the
serving of food. He also
explained how the Lions
members were working
around the clock, doing
fundraising events to make
the project a reality and a
success.
“You will always see our
and that is just some of the
many mediums we use to
generate funding to make
which are many in King and
surrounding areas, a
success, so I call on you to
support those initiatives if
possible.”
the community hall today.
She said the decision to have the
taken due to the many drug-related
incidents taking place in her ward.
“Breidbach is one of the areas in
my ward which is most affected by
TAKE A SEAT: The ladies from the East London Hindu society Kailash Mandal handed over new chairs
THANDEKA NTLONTI
IT WAS all smiles for Parkside Primary pupils
last week Wednesday when the East London
Hindu society Kailash Mandal donated chairs
and stationery hampers courtesy of Paperback
Shack and Web Stationers to the school.
The Kailash Mandal is a young women’s
organisation which has supported many
charities over the years.
A member of the Hindu society, Rohini Patel,
said they knew about the lack of equipment
through Helen Christian, a Grade R teacher at
the school, when she spoke at a high tea held
last month.
“The high tea served as both a social event
and a charity fundraiser, with more than a 100
people attending the gathering and some
people came with stationery to donate. That
event could not have come at a better time for
Ariston reaches out with bursaries
MADELEINE
CHAPUT
FOR the third
consecutive year,
Ariston Christian
School will be making
20 academic bursaries
available to
economically
disadvantaged pupils
for 2018.
The bursaries are
available to pupils
from grades R to 7
and recipients are
required to be
academically
deser ving.
Launched in an
effort to assist
struggling community
members, the school
has, to date,
sponsored 35 children
from economically
deprived backgrounds.
“There is a great
need to give back to
the community and
this is one of the ways
Ariston prides itself on
doing so,” said one of
the founding directors
of the school, Peter
R o u m e l i ot i s .
There is no deadline
for applications
although there is
limited space as only
20 bursaries are
available. Parents are
encouraged to visit the
school in order to
apply on behalf of
their children.
The school will also
be having an open day
Parkside Primary,” said Patel.
“The sight of a child sitting on a crate and
bricks is heartbreaking. The ladies’ first point of
call was to ensure that all the children had
chairs to sit on,” said Patel.
Toys were bought for the fantasy play area
and some educational and literacy material,
such as reading books and puzzles, were also
donated. This was made possible by East
London businesses and sole proprietors.
Parkside Primary acting principal Cynthia
Butler said she was ecstatic about such a
donation and that is was not the first time the
society made a donation to the school.
“They came here at the beginning of the year
after they had seen an article in the GO! &
Express about Parkside Primary and they came
and asked how they could assist,” said Butler.
And assist they did ... as pupils will enjoy
sitting in class more on their new chairs.
on November 17 at
their new premises at
52 Belgravia Crescent,
where parents can
apply for these
bursaries.
“As of next year, our
play school will be
situated at the new
premises in Belgravia
Crescent and we are
very excited for this
new chapter,”
Roumeliotis said.
“The open day is
really a chance for
parents to view our
new facility and ask
any questions they
may have. There will
also be fun activities
throughout the day for
From hand-stitched to
The Guild has been around
for approximately 20 years and
has 65 members who meet
this colourful exhibition.
“Everybody pulls their
so wonderful. Quilting is such
a sociable craft, we're like a
Buffalo City.
Lujiza Public, Parkside and AW
Barnes primary schools were
“On behalf of Keep a Girl in
Series draws
record entry
Tough conditions add to it all
TRIBAL are very proud to announce that
the third instalment of the TRIBAL
Triathlon Series was a phenomenal
success at the weekend.
The race, which comprised of mini,
sprint and Olympic distances, at t racted
a record crowd to Orient Beach, despite
clashing with some other major
sporting events in the region.
A large contingent of 153 competitors
were involved on a day that proved to
throw some testing conditions at the
at h l e t e s .
Large swells made the swim
challenging, however, the athletes
showed resilience, with almost all able
to conquer the discipline.
A strong north-easterly wind kept the
intensity high for the cycle, before the
heat played its part to accompany the
athletes on the run leg.
The event also doubled as the Buffalo
City Triathlon’s Provincial
Championship, with the athletes who
hoped to race for the province having to
dig deep to overcome the conditions.
Bradley Birkholtz, who has dominated
the TRIBAL series so far, saw off some
strong competition from local pro
Clinton Gravett and the second placed
Eben Hartslief, to eventually take the
win in the Olympic distance race. The
GALA WINNERS:
Selborne Primary took
part in the top 10
Interschools gala,
achieving outstanding
results. The swimmers
came first in various
styles with Christo Van
Loggerenberg taking
first place in freestyle,
back stroke,
breaststroke and
flystroke in the U13
division. Pictured are
spot, with Charlene Moss second, and
Roxy Ward third.
TRIBAL Swim, Cycle, Run and
Triathlon shop and events company
sponsored athlete Wickus Saunders,
who decimated the field in the Male
Sprint category, won previously by his
younger brother, Travis.
Matthew Raath and Anthony “Coxy”
Cox joined Saunders on the podium.
The ladies race was also won by a
regular winner, Danieke De Kock, who
saw off valiant attacks from both Nicole
Thysse and Candice Murray to seal her
third win in as many races.
In the mini distance, Caleb Miestre
solidified another win in his promising
triathlon career, beating Nathan
Gallacher and Oliver Lange to collect
the gold medal.
The ladies race also proved to be a
corker, with Kiara Herman taking the
win from Emily Raath and Taryn
Hensburg.
Speaking of his win, Birkholtz
remained humble, saying: “The
conditions were really tough, second
only to Ironman 2012 I’d say.”
Birkholtz exited the water 1.30 mins
down on Clinton Gravett.
Birkholtz said: “I managed to keep a
solid power output on my bike, pushing
the hills, and eventually caught Clinton
on the third lap of the cycle. From there,
I pushed hard for the first 4km of the
run, and when I felt comfortable, I
relaxed into a rhythm to the end.”
Birkholtz was also overwhelmed by
the number of competitors.
“I am looking forward to seeing the
continued growth of triathlon in this
region,” he said.
Giddo Muller, CEO of TRIBAL, said:
“We couldn’t have been happier with
the event this weekend. The fans were
fantastic, the racing thrilling and
conditions made it an honest day out.
“We are very thankful to the
sponsors, the organisers, and of course
the athletes and their supporters, who
made the day a win for all involved.”
The final event of the series will t a ke
place on Sunday December 3. A large
crowd is expected again, as the race
Big haul
take part
Event sees 93 fish caught and released
THE Rock and Surf Super Pro League
Border Blacktips recently held their
fifth competition of the season at
Haga Haga, where 60 anglers battled
it out for their share of the awesome prizes
on offer.
The weather was mostly good and the sea
conditions seemed fine at first glance, but turned
out to be rather challenging due to a strong surge
resulting in some tough fishing.
Visiting angler, Lance Muller landed his very
first kob weighing in at 5.2kg – also winning him
Top Edible for the day – with member, Neville
Kromhout winning Heaviest Ray with an Eagle Ray
of 6.1kg.
Madden Openshaw won the Top Junior spot with
a 30cm blacktail.
The big R2000 prize money at the end of a hard
d ay ’s fishing went to member Greg Timm for a
35cm blacktail.
A total of 93 fish were caught, with a combined
weight of 79.8kg and consisting of 16 different
species – which were all safely released to swim
another day.
“A big thank you to Haga Haga Hotel for hosting
this event, as well as Aquelle Water for hydrating
us after a long day’s fishing,” Border Blacktips’
Shane Smit said.
Next Saturday, November 25, the club will be
hosting their sixth rock ’n surf angling competition
of the season, and the last for this year, at Kiwane.
“We have a tradition of ending the year off with
a bang and this will be no different as there are
some awesome prizes including cash up for
grabs,” Smit said.
Anyone can enter a RASSPL (Rock and Surf
Super Pro League) event and tickets can be
bought at Bilimoria Fishing Tackle stores or Quality
Baits in the SBDC.
Tickets for this competition are R150 for visitors,
R50 for RASSPL members and under 14’s fish free.
“Remember that we are strictly a 100% catch
‘We have a tradition of ending the
year off with a bang and this will be
no different as there are awesome
prizes including cash up for grabs’
and release club so everything must be released
safely. Please ask about our rules and regulations
including measuring procedures at any of the
registrations and we will gladly assist,” Smit said.
Early registration will be with club secretary
Sharon Miles on Friday, November 24 from 2pm at
Chelsea Square B&B in Selborne.
Alternatively, anglers can register on the
morning of the competition at Kiwane from
4.30am, with team manager John Frost.
The competition starts at 5am, with all
scorecards to be handed in by no later than
3.30pm at the Kaysers Beach Social Club.
The fishing area for this competition is between
the Chalumna River mouth and the Hamburg River
mouth. Prize-giving will follow when all scores are
finalised, at about 4pm. Inquiries: Shane on
