Welcome to our final issue of

INSPO Fitness Journal for 2017.

As this time of year easily spirals

into feeling seriously overloaded, we’re

choosing to focus on all the wonderful things

Christmas and summer offer; family, friends,

holidays, beaches and exploring.

We’re also celebrating the ultimate summer

holiday - and it’s surprisingly close to

home. In Raglan to be specific.

This awesome beach town has become

something of an adventure playground - plus

it’s packed with gourmet delights, stunning

cafes and shopping for those who need to

combine retail therapy with their beach

getaway.

We’re also celebrating young athletes who

have been inspired by their sporting heroes,

and in turn are now motivating the next generation

of young sportspeople to achieve.

Plus we’re packed with summer events,

Christmas gift ideas and plenty of inspiration

around maintaining your health, fitness and

wellbeing through Christmas and summer.

Our goal for 2017/2018 is to embrace

opportunities and change. And we’re

already following that advice, taking an

extended summer break,which means this

will be your last issue of INSPO Fitness

Journal until we relaunch our exciting

fresh seasonal magazine next March.

All your favourites will remain, as will

our focus around championing our people

and achievements - and encouraging you

to enjoy new activities and challenges.

We’re really excited about moving to a

quarterly seasonal magazine - and continuing

to provide you with informative

and inspirational articles.

Caleb recently returned from the World

Rowing Championships in Florida,

where he coxed the NZ Men’s 8 to sixth

place, matching their result from the

Rio Olympics last year.

Next up, he hopes to push the boat

into the medals at the 2018 World

Championships, and long-term aims

to medal with the crew at the Tokyo

Olympic Games.

Caleb Shepherd

Scouted by Hamilton Boys’ High

School director of rowing Glenn Ross,

Caleb Shepherd admits that he fits the

mould perfectly for coxing; ‘small, loud

and a bit cheeky’.

Glenn’s call was a good one;

Caleb was instantly hooked on the

competitiveness and intensity of

rowing, despite having formerly played

rugby and inline hockey. His rise to the

2010 New Zealand rowing team came

on the back of Maadi Cup success with

Hamilton Boys’ and saw him decide to

commit fully to the sport.

“When I retire from rowing I have

aspirations to complete a Masters at

Cambridge or Oxford University in

the UK, before moving into freelance

journalism and rowing coaching.”

Caleb is balancing full-time sport

with part-time studies at University of

Waikato, and is in his third year of a

Bachelor of Arts majoring in Writing

Studies.

He is the newest member of the INSPO

Fitness Journal team as part of a

university internship, combining his love

of writing and sport.

Trek ‘n’ Travel has been

synonymous with Victoria Street

in Hamilton for 20 years.

The store is nestled in among

restaurants in the heart of

the city.

A changing industry with

online shopping and expanding

shopping centres means local

retailers have been struggling to

stay afloat in recent times.

By providing quality service,

staying true to their products,

customers and being mindful of

stock balancing, Trek ‘n’ Travel has

survived.

It hasn’t been easy, but owner

Colin Hancock, says the support

of his staunch customers, key

brands and suppliers has helped

the business see off a recession

and tough opposition in recent

years.

Colin began Trek ‘n’ Travel in

1997 after taking a stroll around

the CBD.

“I had a walk around Hamilton

and checked out who my competitors

would be.

“I felt there was an opening

for an outdoor shop to specialise

in three particular products;

tramping, travel and at that stage

multisport (running, kayaking and

mountainbiking).”

Since then Trek ‘n’ Travel has

grown into a one-stop-shop for

outdoor and travel gear, stocking

everything from tents to packs

and travel adapters.

The ever-changing retail

industry has seen online shopping

grow exponentially in the last few

years.

Colin and Trek ‘n’ Travel recognised

this as an area of growth

so took the initiative of starting

an online store when they first

launched the website.

This proved to be successful

at a time when other businesses

were starting websites without the

online store option.

Key brands for Trek ‘n’ Travel

include Merrell, Kiwi brand Earth

Sea Sky, Smartwool, Meindl boots,

Rab Clothing and Birkenstock.

These partnerships have been

in place for the lifespan of the

business and are respected and

Raglan is a hotly sought after destination

for everyone from families wanting

to enjoy the beach and an array of adventure

opportunities; to city dwellers keen

to learn paddleboarding or surfing and kitesurfing,

as well as athletes looking for fresh

challenge - and of course those just wanting

to kick back, relax and immerse themselves

in exquisite local crafts, food and beach life.

The opportunities are many and varied

and there's much to love about the concept

of a Staycation. Forget about the hassle of

travelling overseas - just grab your friends

and family and enjoy the scenic and short

trip to Raglan.

Local Adventure

When it comes to adventure seekers, Raglan

is a definite hot spot. For those seeking thrills

and spills, it’s something of a mecca, with

hardcore kitesurfing, mountain running,

cliff jumping, rock climbing, paragliding and

more.

And if you want to learn or try a new

sport or activity, the area is packed with

instructors and opportunity.

the impressive Te Ara Kakariki mountain

bike trails. The 5km trail network loop,

overlooking the Tasman Sea and Whaingaroa

Harbour, offers a bit of everything for all

levels. Trails “Hateful 80” and “Alley Oop” are

ideal for younger cyclists, and “Rope a Dope”

is the Raglan mini version of Rotorua's

famous “Corners”. If you want to get the

adrenaline pumping, make sure you suss out

the jumps and speedy downhill of “Denny

& Brenny”. Once known as just a surf town,

Raglan is putting itself on New Zealand's cycling

map. Besides hosting the Karioi Classic

winter cycling event for the last eight years,

the Te Ara Kakariki mountain bike trails are

set to become a major drawcard. Bring your

own bike or you can rent one. Trail information

and maps are available at the local bike

shop, Cyclery Raglan.

Then there's horseriding on the black

sand beaches, hiking trips, fishing, waterfalls

and the opportunity to scramble up Mount

Karioi; an extinct, forest-clad volcano with

summit views over the Tasman Sea.

And of course, Raglan is famous for its

world-class surf breaks, with the long, peeling

left-hand break of Manu Bay said to offer

one of the longest rides in the world (and

featuring in the 1966 surfing film Endless

Summer). For those who are learning the

skill of surfing or wanting a more family

friendly option, around the corner is

Ocean Beach - ideal for less experienced or

beginner surfers. Raglan Surf School offers

lessons for beginners, plus private lessons for

those looking to enhance the skill base they

already have. Try the Surf Dames Retreat – a

women’s only surf school based at Raglan’s

Whale Bay.

Relax and enjoy

When you've had your daily adventure fix,

relax and enjoy the many superb food and

coffee options. Raglan Roast is of course the

local coffee brew and the perfect way to start

your exploration of the local foodie scene.

Explore the many raw and vegetarian/

vegan food menus at different cafes, pop

into Solscape’s Conscious Kitchen to try the

plant-based menu or treat yourself to succulent

fresh seafood (easy to find in the village),

with Raglan Fish selling the day’s catch from

its wharf-based shop. Fresh produce is readily

available at farmers markets and there

are plenty of locally crafted offerings such as

Raglan is away from the hustle and bustle

of the everyday corporate world with wellness

is a definite focus – yoga and massage

studios, wellness retreats and eco-based getaways

are in abundance. A visit to The Herbal

Raglan Karioi Trail…

IT’S ADDICTIVE

There’s something strangely addictive about

the annual Raglan Karioi Trail event.

The 24km leg has earned a reputation

as one of the toughest endurance runs

around, yet still attracts elite athletes

and those wanting to push their personal

boundaries, while the alternative less intense

tracks cater for children and first timers keen

to enjoy the spectacular views and the experience

of walking and running on Mt Karioi.

The inclusion of the 10km walk or run

and a 2km event for children makes this is a

true family event, offering all ages and fitness

levels the chance to get involved.

The Mt Karioi track is a true mountain

run, taking participants through everything

from thick bush and mud, to rocks and steep

hills.

Event creator and organiser Francois

Mazet says he chose to make it a real “mountain

run” instead of just a trail run.

“You have to run to the summit twice if

you do the 24km event, so it’s pretty tough.

Some parts are particularly challenging but

this is what I like: mountain running. I would

describe it as very technical and challenging.

“But then on the other side it’s a stunning

setting and we have trail options to suit complete

beginners also.”

A keen skier, snowboarder and trail

runner, the Raglan Karioi Trail combines

Francois’ passion for the Kiwi outdoors with

his knowledge in sports events and Masters

in sports management.

“Karioi is a mountain that I love running

and that’s why I wanted to share this experience.

It’s not about the time it takes, but

about the experience.

“I want the Raglan Karioi Trail to be

recognised not only as an iconic mountain

running event in New Zealand, but also as a

unique Raglan community event, as this is

part of what makes it so special.”

This year’s event is being held on December

9 and offers a number of options for

competitors: 24km solo (8am start), 24km

team (8am start), 10km run or walk (10am

start), 2km kids event (1:30pm start).

“We’re lucky to have an awesome team

of sponsors on board too, so after the event

there’s a free barbecue and Mama’s Brew

Shop and its amazing kombucha are involved,

along with Pilot’s Brewery.

“There’s a reason competitors come back

each year - and it’s just as much about the

social side of things as the challenge of one

of the few authentic mountain runs around.

This year sees the return of five competitors

who have run the Raglan Karioi Trail for

the last four years - never missing an event -

since it first began.

Among them is Chris Morrissey, a

42-year-old from Tauranga who is a three

time winner - and returns this year with high

hopes of taking his fourth title, against stiff

competition which includes 33-year-old

Kovo Kowalewski McDonald from Taupiri.

Kovo first entered after being encouraged

by her coach as a ‘great local event to try out

- a bit of a challenge on a new course’.

“Every year I cross the finish line and tell

Francois I am never coming back! But every

year I do - it’s hard work on a challenging

course but what brings me back is Francois

and his team. The

volunteers are great.

The event is growing

every year and the

finish line is amazing

with food, coffee,

beer and awesome prizes. It’s a true family

vibe and a great day out.”

A highlight for Kovo is the open-air bath

at the end of the run.

“That bath to soak in at the end is true

Kiwi country style. And the views, if you have

time to check them out… make it all worth

the hard work.”

Dave Upshall from Te Mata thrives on the

personal challenge the course provides and

rates the incredible setting and the bonus of

a beer waiting at the finish line.

“It’s in our backyard and what a backyard

it is, the elevation is a great challenge. We

enter many events, mainly trail running, so

love Raglan as a good training run.”

A TASTE OF

SUMMER FUN

The temperatures are rising, daylight saving has long settled

in and the call of the outdoors is getting stronger. Summer is

a beautiful time to get out and experience Hamilton and the

Waikato region and its huge calendar of events.

Music festivals, hot air balloons and

lots of foodie-inspired events are

crammed into an action-packed

calendar for summer visitors and locals alike.

Here is just a sample:

International Cricket Series

Support the New Zealand Black Caps when

they play against the West Indies (Dec 9-13)

and against Pakistan on January 16 (ODI) at

Hamilton’s Seddon Park, while they battle

England for a T20 game on Sunday, February

25. The White Ferns take on the West

Indies for a T20 match on Sunday, March 25.

Soundsplash

Held in Raglan from January 19-21, Soundsplash

is a three-day summer festival of

music, freedom and expression, held in the

Wainui reserve. With an impressive line-up

of both international and New Zealand bands

hitting the stage over the three days, Soundsplash

is the epitome of a summer festival.

The 2018 line-up includes Katchafire, Dub

FX, Slumberjack, Shapeshifter and much

more.

HSBC New Zealand Rugby Sevens

A huge event for the region, tens of thousands

of rugby sevens’ fans are headed our

way for the HSBC New Zealand Rugby

Sevens held February 3-4. The sevens will

Balloons over Waikato

Celebrating 18 years of this iconic event in

Burn, and the famed Nightglow event, where

IRONMAIDEN:

Erin Furness

Professional Ironman athlete Erin Furness is not only

successful in her own right, but is doing what she can to

help others on their own fitness journey.

As if training full-time, personal training

and coaching wasn’t enough, Erin is currently

also providing her services to two teenage

girls (first-timers in terms of joining a gym

and deciding on a programme) aimed at

creating awareness around the importance of

starting the gym experience the right way.

Erin is working with Kate Potter and Nicole

Taylor, who are sharing their experience

with INSPO Fitness Journal, hopefully to

encourage others to get active and try new

experiences.

Erin recognises the gym can be an

intimidating area for teenagers, but with the

right help and guidance it can be a rewarding

habit to create.

Erin has been competing in marathon

running and distance triathlons for

many years, turning pro after the 2012

Ironman World Championships in Kona,

Hawaii where she placed 10 in her division.

She now balances a full training load with

personal training and coaching.

For those with even a basic awareness of

Ironman racing, you’ll know that it takes a

huge amount of time and effort to train - but

it’s that training Erin loves the most, along

with the challenge of racing.

“It’s a pretty long day out there and I

think you’ve got to be resilient to be able to

make it through,” she says.

“I definitely love the challenge, and I

really enjoy the training side; pushing myself

and always trying to improve and get a little

bit better each year.”

The aerobic nature of the sport means

that once you reach a certain level it can take

years to make marginal gains and improvements,

but that’s all part of the Ironman

challenge.

Erin started out as a marathon runner,

taking up distance triathlon in 2010. These

days she mainly specialises in triathlon and

Ironman coaching now, and is a personal

trainer at Fastlane Fitness.

With a Bachelor’s degree from the

University of Waikato in Sport and Leisure

studies, she began personal training 12 years

ago and was hooked instantly.

“I really enjoyed helping people towards

their fitness goals. Once I started professional

triathlon I began to do a little bit of coaching

on the side as well.

“My coaching business is probably a bit

bigger than my personal training business at

the moment.”

Erin has coached a number of athletes

to achieve and surpass their expectations,

with some qualifying for the Ironman world

champs in Kona.

“It’s very rewarding working with people

and helping them achieve goals, particularly

in something like triathlon where you have

people who never thought they could do an

Ironman and after two years they’ve actually

done one.”

Erin thrives on helping people improve

their overall health and wellbeing through

training, and seeing achieve things they never

thought possible.

“Health and fitness should be enjoyable

and that’s something I really focus on, for

myself and anyone I’m working with.”

Her advice to young gym novices is “Definitely

work with a personal trainer or gym

instructor, just to learn the basics of what you

need to be doing. Definitely work with someone

you can be open and honest with so they

can really help you achieve your goals.”

Erin’s key personal focus is on rehabbing

an injury and she has her sights firmly set

on next year’s IronmanNZ event in Taupo.

Her goals are to gain a top five placing at the

event before heading offshore for the Pro

Ironman season.

Her long-term goals are to get back to

the World Champs in Kona in a few years’

time as a professional, as well as helping her

athletes achieve their goals and be in form

for their upcoming races.

Five quick questions with Erin

What advice would you give someone

considering tackling an Ironman?

Get a good coach, and a few good

training buddies to help you through

those long sessions. I believe a huge

part of my athletes’ success is that

they train together as a team, in an

extremely motivational and encouraging

environment.

When the going gets tough ... ?

I have mental strategies that I use when

things really start hurting in training or

racing. I have key phrases that I write on

my drink bottles on the bike – I use a lot

of positive self-talk and mental imagery.

I also stay in the moment and

concentrate on what I can control –

making sure my form is efficient, I’ve

taken on adequate nutrition. I also focus

on the fact that the tough times will

pass – the lows in this sport can be very

low, but the highs are also very high.

Above all, I always remind myself why I

am out there – because I love it.

How important is rest, and how do you

rest and relax?

Recovery and rest is as important as

training. As an athlete, part of your role

isn’t just to log training mileage – it’s

also to allow yourself to recover from

this. Mentally you need a rest period as

well.

Favourite relaxation activities include

power napping, catching up with friends

for coffee or lunch, going to the movies,

spending some quality time with my

husband – or a slightly more active form

of relaxation would be walking my dogs,

or hitting the beach and possibly getting

a bit of surfing in if I have the energy.

What is the best advice you have ever

received?

Look after your body. This was from my

Opa, who was an ultra-runner (running

several Comrades marathons). Back

in those days, I guess you just ran a

lot, without what we now know about

massage, mobility, muscle balance,

nutrition. Needless to say, his knees and

hips weren’t great in his old age, and he

always lamented the fact he could no

longer run – a fate that he repeatedly

tried to save me from.

What’s your favourite guilty treat?

Ice cream and/or gelato. I definitely have

a fair bit of this post-racing.

TRAINING

Teenagers can be highly

motivated to join a gym and

get training - but that’s often

where it ends.

When it comes to working out wisely

and choosing exercises best for

their specific needs, they can tend

to overlook the basics.

Many teenagers grab the best value gym

deal on offer and plunge into classes and

workouts with enormous enthusiasm, but

little (or zero) knowledge of what they’re

hoping to achieve, correct technique or how

to train with injury prevention in mind.

This is where expert advice is essential.

INSPO Fitness Journal is following two

Hamilton teenagers who have teamed up

with personal trainer Erin Furness and Fastlane

Fitness, for a series on teenage training.

Kate Potter (15) and Nicole Taylor (15)

have played a variety of team sports over

the years, and decided to join a gym for

their summer fitness.

The pair has previously played netball,

basketball and inline hockey, and Kate

has rowed and is currently competing in

equestrian events. Both have also had some

back and health issues, so knowing how to

manage this is an important part of their

gym experience.

After a tour of several Hamilton facilities,

Kate and Nicole chose Fastlane Fitness as

their preferred option; for the diversity of

the classes, the friendly vibe, the pool (and

the on-site cafe may also have been a factor!).

After pairing up with Erin for an initial

assessment, which included goal setting, a

check sheet as to any previous injuries or

problem areas, and an overview on their

reasons for joining a gym, they got their first

taste of gym-life with a personalised weights

programme.

Both admit to being relieved after their

first session:

“It was really great,” they enthused, “and

even though we didn’t know how to do a

lot of the stuff and had to learn, no-one was

staring at us and everyone seemed really

encouraging.”

The girls meet with Erin once a week

before school, and then get together a couple

of times a week to repeat their workout,

adding in some cardio and swimming when

time permits.

With two weeks of training now under

their belt, they’re unanimous that boxing

is their favourite so far, that early mornings

‘suck’, but they’re keen to start adding

in some Fastlane Fitness classes to their

workouts.

we’ll have an update on their progress,

some do’s and dont’s of training from

Erin Furness and hopefully some training

options to encourage others to give gym

training a go.

When it comes developing and encouraging young athletes,

Christina Jacklin is impressively well equipped to motivate and

educate in everything from mental fortitude to sport specific skills.

The HSPNZ athlete life advisor has

a swag of achievements and accolades

to her name; from MSc Sports

Science and NLP Master Practitioner to

qualified university lecturer and physical

education teacher.

Her background includes more than a

decade working as a high school physical

education teacher in the United Kingdom,

as well as a decade as a senior lecturer in

sports science and coaching in London.

Christina’s love of sport and education

an athlete life advisor with HPSNZ, and she

leads the Pathway to Podium athlete life

team also, working with up-and-coming

talent in the greater Waikato region.

Her own sporting background is equally

as impressive as her academic achievements.

Christina spent 20 years as a national

league hockey player (and then coach

at Wimbledon Hockey Club, UK) in the

English Hockey League. She represented

England and a career highlight was scoring

her first National League goal (an opportunity

rarely afforded to a defender).

After emigrating to New Zealand in 2012,

Christina rapidly immersed herself in the

sporting world here and admits her role

offers her the opportunity to embrace all

the things she loves about educating and

motivating.

people in living their lives to the full is

HANGING TOUGH:

Olivia Loe

Olivia Loe might be the

perfect example of persistence

beats resistance. After years

as a reserve for Rowing New

Zealand’s Elite team, her first

year in the big time proved to

be a winning one.

After constantly being overlooked for

selection by national sporting bodies,

most athletes find themselves looking

for a spot in the workplace instead. But sometimes

a bit of patience and a lot of hard work

eventually pays off.

Olivia Loe is the ultimate example of this.

Having come close to tasting victory at under

23 level multiple times over the years (picking

up a bronze in 2012 with the women’s quadruple

sculls and silver with the women’s four

in 2014), since then she’s found herself just on

the outside of the selection list as a reserve in

2015 and 2016.

However the 25-year-old’s breakthrough

season has proved that hard work pays off,

teaming up with Brooke Donoghue (21) in the

women’s double sculls.

The young pairing had an unbeaten

season, winning World Cup gold medals in

Poznan and Lucerne, along with a Henley

Royal Regatta win. At the World Rowing

Championships in Florida, Olivia finally realised

her dream of becoming a World Cham-

pion, winning in a time of 6:45.080, 1.5s ahead

of nearest competitors USA (both athletes 34

years old). Olivia and Brooke forged ahead

in the middle thousand to dominate the field

and set a marker for the next Olympic cycle.

Olivia is a not your average athlete. Heading

into the World Championships as both

a favourite and rookie would be enough to

frighten most athletes, but for her it was all

part of the experience.

“To be honest I didn’t realise I could be

so nervous, but I find nerves comforting. It

means that I actually believe I can do it.”

Focusing on the process and enjoying

the moment were critical to overcoming the

pressure.

“We never focused on winning. It obviously

was always the end goal but it was more

about the processes.”

She felt the recipe for victory was simple

and that she just needed to trust in her training.

“I knew the rhythm, the plan, the plan b.

We had our jobs to do and we just did them.”

This stubbornness was all part of battle-hardening

and ultimately made her a

stronger athlete, but the road of a reserve is by

no means easy.

“I guess when I think back to my time as a

reserve it was a bit of a rollercoaster ride emotionally.

It made me question myself a lot.

“But every time I didn’t make it, I realised

just how much I wanted it. I think what I took

from those years was that it wasn’t going to be

handed to me, and if I was actually going to

make it I had to give them a no excuses to not

pick me.”

Her goals in the sport are simply “to be the

best,” which means taking Olympic Gold in

Tokyo, but she realises that’s easier said than

done.

“I used to think that once you started

winning, it would somehow become easier,

but it doesn’t.

“You have to keep pushing the standards

and your limits because you can guarantee

that your competition is doing the same.”

It’s this type of attitude that real champions

talk about so often and one that will be

critical if Olivia is to achieve her lofty goals.

A head above the rest:

TOM SEUREN

As far as quick learners go, Tom Seuren is up there

with the best of them. In only his second year playing

basketball, he has already racked up a string of successes

and caught the eye of national development scouts.

The St Paul’s year 12 student hails from

Tauranga and decided to give basketball

a go as he enjoyed shooting hoops with

his mates at lunchtime.

At 6ft 7in tall, you’d be forgiven for thinking

he’s a natural born talent. But it’s taken a

lot of hard work and hours with St Paul’s and

Waikato U17 representative coach, Nick Fee,

for the 16-year-old to really excel.

Tom’s sporting background includes rugby

and rowing, where in his novice year he won

the U18 Novice Double sculls title, picked up a

silver in the U15 double and fourth in the U15

quad at the 2016 Maadi Cup regatta in Twizel.

INSPO Fitness Journal finds out more ....

How and when did you get into the sport?

I used to shoot some hoops with my school

mates at lunchtime and really enjoy it, so

in Year 11 thought I’d give basketball a try.

After a season of just playing for fun, the

new head coach of St Paul’s Collegiate in

Hamilton (where I’m a boarder), Nick Fee

approached me and said I might have the

potential to be an asset to the team if I

was willing to put in the training. He then

helped me train day in and day out in

the off-season to improve my game up to

Premier Teams standard. I owe Nick Fee

a great deal of gratitude for the time he’s

invested in me.

Previous sporting background?

I played rugby for five years up until I was 14,

always lock (no surprises there), then decided

I wanted to take up rowing. I was surprised

and thrilled that with my good mate Max

Dobbe we won gold at the New Zealand

Maadi Cup in Twizel in the Under 18 Novices

Double Sculls, and Silver in the Under 15s,

and even managed a fourthin the Quads.

What does your training involve?

For me, basketball at school involves at least

1.5-hour sessions a day, four days a week with

my school team. We incorporate some gym

weight work also. I usually go back into the

gym either with Nick or a teammate for a

second daily training for another hour and

a half. Personally I train every day including

the weekends focusing on my essentials

and position needs. I like to work on my

post moves, making sure I am strong in the

post is key, as I want to be able to beat every

opponent I face. My jump shot in the midrange

is definitely something I work hard on,

and my height is an advantage here. I like

to also work on my handles and guard skills

as I’d like to be both good defensively and

offensively. I still have lots to learn as I’ve

only been playing for two years, but I just

love it.

What do you enjoy most about basketball?

I love the skill of the game and the

competitiveness of it. It’s all go from the

first whistle. Every player on the court is

vital to the success of the team. We all have

our roles to play. There is so much to learn,

so many set plays, so many variables, It’s

never dull. I try and play every game like

it’s my last – it’s just such an addictive sport.

There’s no day where I don’t go and shoot

hoops.

Success to date?

Waikato Rep U17 after playing for one year.

Last month I was invited to join the NZ U17

North National Basketball Talent Camp. It

was a great experience with many talented

players attending. From there I have just

joined a team from all around NZ called

The Air Raiders coached by Matt Lacey that

will be touring California and Hawaii in

December playing 10 games.

Basketball is the world’s

second most popular sport

behind football/soccer. In

the last couple of years

New Zealand has enjoyed

fantastic growth in the sport,

cementing the fact basketball

is rated as the fastest growing

sport in the world.

My link to basketball goes back to my

childhood; watching Magic Johnson

and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Growing

up in the original showtime era shaped my

love for the game. Being vertically challenged

meant I would never have a professional

career as a player, but that never

stopped us from working on ball skills and

passing like Magic did.

When I graduated Physiotherapy school

I soon realised that many basketball players

suffered from common back spasm and

other leg injures because of the constant

pounding on hard wood floors.

I began to apply a lot of sports physiotherapy

knowledge to basketball and found

that players were not only injured less, but

that their performance was often better.

I’ll never forget the day in early 2004

when the captain of the Tall Blacks showed

up at the clinic asking for treatment. Pero

Cameron is a very big man, with a bigger

heart and a great personality. He didn’t say

much in that first session and I remember

thinking his calves were the size of basketballs

and that I needed a bigger bed. In the

second session I introduced to Pero the

power of the foam roller.

Now you might find this surprising, but

in 2004 New Zealand didn’t even know what

foam rollers were; I had to source my rollers

from the States.

This early work with Pero eventually led

to me working as the official physiotherapist

for the New Zealand Tall Blacks. The

experiences had, knowledge gained, and

friendships developed are things I will always

cherish.

Recently I’ve started working with a

young player who has great talent and hopes

of playing overseas. He presented with rapid

growth, tight muscles and significant back

spasm and pain. I was surprised that even

today with our sports science knowledge,

players are not being told of the importance

of using the foam roller after every practise,

and at night to release tight muscles.

I’ve written multiple times on the benefits

of foam rolling and can’t emphasise enough

how important it is for the adolescent rapidly

growing athlete to stay on top of their

flexibility.

Basketball is a high intensity sport with

sudden bursts of jumping, sprinting, and

twisting. The impact the body takes in an

average game is very high.

One area that often gets missed or not

thought about is a proper basketball warmup.

As a biomechanical running coach,

I’ve found that it’s important to get muscle

activation, joint motion and increased movement

pattern activation going first, before

getting into the actual act of running.

The same applies for basketball. If one of

the biggest causes of leg tightness and back

spasm is pounding on the court, why do we

have our players start practise with jogging

around the court as the first move?

Rather than starting with a jog, start with

the following, which is the same as a running

warm-up. By the time this short routine is

done, the player will be ready to get into

more basketball specific drills.

1. Walking forward lunges length of court

2. Backward walking lunges length of court

3. Squats with side-step length of court

4. Standing leg swings forward/back and

side-to-side

5. Heel flicks length of court

6. High knees length of court

7. Bounding length of court

IS MEDICINE

There is a saying that if exercise was a pill it would be

the most highly prescribed medication in the world.

The benefits of positive lifestyle modification

(LM) have been established by

decades of evidence and no one could

argue that regular exercise forms part of a

healthy life. However it is becoming increasingly

evident that exercise also forms a huge

part of preventative medicine.

Numerous studies point to a lower incidence

of heart disease, cancer and dementia

in the healthiest populations of the world –

ones that are constantly active and follow a

Mediterranean or plant based way of eating. It

has long been known that the effects of regular

exercise far outweigh the efficacy of Prozac

on managing depression. Manipulation of

the major food groups is sometimes used by

oncologists to ‘starve’ cancer cells, and supplementing

Omega 3 into the diet of maximum

security prisoners dramatically decreases

incidence of inmate aggression (which begs

the question that if they had better nutrition

would they even be there in the first place?).

As evidence of the need for preventative

medicine, there an undeniable escalation of

microbial resistance (meaning antibiotics will

no longer work on the simplest of ailments)

and a statistic that predicts 80 percent of

Kiwis will be morbidly obese by 2060. The

effects of climate change, resource rivalry,

the refugee crisis and unchecked population

growth (in certain areas), is further fostering

the development of disease, including triggering

some long dormant diseases like polio.

Issues like these are increasingly forcing

the health and medical professions to focus

on how to prevent illness rather than just

continuing to treat symptoms as post-disease

treatment alone is failing to stem the flow.

A comprehensive employer sponsored

lifestyle program targeting diet, exercise, behaviour

modification, and stress management

was initiated with twelve employees between

2006 and 2010 at a rural university in Ohio in

the United States. The intervention program

was effective in reducing cardiovascular

disease risk factors after just one year of treatment

(which says something about investing

in keeping employees well rather than paying

out loads of sick pay).

Closer to home, the Green Prescription

program attempts to use the power of a

doctor’s advice to initiate lifestyle changes. To

make regular exercise part of the ‘medication’,

patients are paired with exercise educators via

Sport Waikato. And in a throw-back to primary

school drama lessons, a 2016 program

helped children manage stress by imitating

interesting plants and animals, such as sunflowers,

pine trees, sleeping lions and deer.

Getting up and walking is one of the first

rehabilitative exercises after heart surgery,

training with weights has been proven to

increase bone density in many cases of osteoporosis,

a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes can

be overturned through regular exercise and a

reduction of body fat, and lung damage from

smoking can be reversed through exercise

interventions.

In the prevention of disease, new findings

in 2017 studies showed that engaging in

even minimal amounts of exercise can be

protective against breast cancer. The effect

of exercise on hypertension (high blood

pressure) has been well researched and the

lowering/stabilising of blood pressure is one

of the first positive effects of an appropriate

exercise program.

With hypertension and high cholesterol

being stroke risk factors, there is a link

between regular exercise and a decreased risk

of stroke.

Funny thing is, this is not a new concept

and in pre-antibiotic times, exercise was

almost always included in wellness and

healing alongside herbal remedies (and

strangely, things like arsenic and copious

quantities of wine).

In around 100 BC the philosopher Galen

promoted fresh air, daily exercise, healthy

food, and sleep as the foundations of good

health.

Medicine balls were invented by the Roman

gladiators to get back to strength following

injury and kettlebells were so commonly

used by the Russians to improve ballistic and

functional strength it became a sport. In recent

times the ever-present-in-a-gym stability

ball morphed over from occupational health.

A change of scenery and fresh air were

some of the simplest forms of restorative

medicine in the early century and many were

sent to the mountains in search of nature’s

cure (think de-stress/tropical holiday in the

modern age).

Optimisation of body weight, a healthy

diet, regular exercise and quitting smoking,

have always been cornerstone strategies in

the prevention of chronic diseases from

heart and metabolic conditions to cancer.

In the predicted incoming perfect

storm of antibiotic resistance and escalating

chronic disease, it seems essential that

exercise needs to play a much bigger part

in population health as the foundation of

preventative medicine.

land of the outdoor gym

There’s nothing quite like having a few days off to enjoy

the simple things in life. Labour Weekend not only brought

stunning weather but also the opportunity to take a moment

and appreciate the sunshine, blue sky, and light breezes

keeping the heat at bay.

I

sat on the deck of a cosy cottage in

Ohakune, with my laptop open and a

beautiful view of the horizon. Having just

finished the Tongariro Crossing I felt exhausted

yet exhilarated; sore but successful;

tired but proud.

That weekend away was a timely reminder

of just how lucky we are to live in a

country where we are surrounded by oceans

and beaches, lakes and rivers, mountains and

valleys - a huge outdoor jungle gym.

We can travel a few hours in any direction

to find some of the most beautiful scenery;

views that you could travel the world and

never replicate.

So many times’ I’ve heard people say they

can’t exercise because they don’t have access

to a gym, or there isn’t one that suits their

schedule, or they can’t afford a membership -

the list goes on.

While these are all valid reasons for not

going to a gym, that doesn’t excuse us for not

doing our best to look after our health and

wellbeing. A gym isn’t the only place to get

fit, so it might be time to appreciate the fact

we live in Aotearoa – the land of the outdoor

gym.

For years I have wanted to complete the

Tongariro Crossing. Hearing other people’s

stories, memories and the challenges they have

overcome instantly put it on my bucket list.

After seeing the videos and pictures of the

breath-taking scenery and views, I knew it

was something I needed to see first-hand. So,

a group of us decided to make the most of a

long weekend and smash it out.

Leading up to the event, I’m not going

to lie - I did have the temptation to pull out.

Those excuses popped into my head: I’m

tired, I need some down time, I’m not fit

enough etc. I was lucky to have an amazing

group of friends who built me up and gave

me the confidence to go for it.

Once I arrived I knew I had made the

right decision. Sometimes we need that extra

push, that extra motivation and support to

achieve our goals.

We woke on Saturday to a crisp morning

but a fire in our bellies. We could not

have planned better weather. The sun broke

through the fog, and as it lifted it revealed a

bright blue sky without a cloud in sight, overlooking

towering mountains, still dusted with

snow – we could barely believe our eyes.

We arrived at our first challenge; The

Devil’s Staircase - a fitting name. It feels like

the Hakarimatas on steroids. From there we

faced every terrain you could imagine, but

no matter how hard it got, you couldn’t help

but be in awe of the amazing landscape and

scenery; from snow-covered peaks to the red

crater and the emerald and blue lakes.

The last 8kms is a long windy downhill

path – so when five of you within the group

are personal trainers, of course the gauntlet

was thrown down - let’s run it. At this stage I

had fallen over many times, I was tired, sore

and felt like I had nothing left in the tank.

But, as soon as that challenge was put out

there, I accepted it.

I can’t explain how exhilarating it is when

you feel like you have nothing left to give,

then turn around, rise to the challenge and

give it 110 percent. The best moment of the

trip was sprinting around the final corner,

after thinking “this is never going to end” to

see the boys’ faces light up and hear them

cheering for me – it made my day perfect!

I got more out of the crossing than I’ve

got out of any workout I’ve done in a gym in

a long time. Not just physically, but emotionally

and spiritually. To be able to reconnect

with nature, solitude, people and myself was

such a great feeling and well overdue.

It reminded me that no amount of treadmill

sprints, squats, lunges or training could

have prepared me physically for this trip.

What could have prepared me was doing

the things I love – running around the lake,

hiking up to the Hakarimatas summit, being

at one with nature.

There’s always going to be a need and demand

for gyms, and I personally love working

out and working from a gym, however

they aren’t for everyone, and that’s okay.

For the general population, it pays to

remember that the world is your oyster and

you have everything you need at your back

door. So, if the gym doesn’t fit your lifestyle

don’t worry. We live in a country where we

can train outdoors, we have our own gym

called New Zealand. It is free, fun and a great

way to start your wellbeing journey.

My advice is ‘don’t let excuses hold you

back’. Our mind is our greatest ally and our

strongest enemy at the same time. Just like

our body, the mind needs training - mental

strength is just as important as physical

strength and once you start working on your

physical health you’ll be amazed how much

it helps your mental wellbeing.

vying for top honours, at the

upcoming ExerciseNZ annual

exercise industry awards.

Matthew Bevege from Hamilton is a

finalist against the country’s best,

for the prestigious title of Best Personal

Trainer of the Year, being announced

at the ExerciseNZ event in Auckland on

November 25.

The awards are regarded as the Oscars

of the New Zealand exercise industry and

have been run by ExerciseNZ since 2005.

“They recognise excellence in exercise

professionals and facilities, as well as for

community contribution and support,”

says ExerciseNZ chief executive Richard

Beddie.

“It’s a chance for clubs and individuals

exercise can be made harder by holding

onto some light dumbells. Repeat 8 – 12

times, each leg, for three sets.

outdoors is invigorating, recharges your batteries and

just makes you feel good.

I’ve put together four moves which you can

do anywhere, with just your body weight.

These moves will lengthen and strengthen

your muscles, using your whole body. No

equipment required - are you ready to feel

energised?

Challenge: Perform five days a week

over summer, for a 15 minute exercise burst

you can complete anywhere, anytime. Do

a circuit of each move without a rest (four

minutes), rest 60 seconds, then repeat for

three sets. Your summer moves are now

complete.

pause, then lift leg up back to the start position.

Perform 8 – 12 reps for three sets.

Move #1 – Full plank to star

Begin in a full plank position with your

hands on the floor. Keep your shoulder

blades down and back, engage your core

and begin rotating your body, moving to tap

your left hand to your left shoulder. Then

extend it toward the ceiling, opening the

A CONSTANT

COMEBACK

Illness and injury have

plagued Sophie Corbidge for

the past three years, but you’ll

always find a smile on this

triathlete’s face.

Time will tell whether her commitment

and dedication will pay off, but given

she has beaten everything from adrenal

fatigue and stress fractures to a broken

elbow, anything is possible.

Scan the social media streams of Kiwi athletes

and you’ll be sure to find the wide grin

and curly blonde locks of Sophie Corbidge.

The 26-year-old has been competing in high

performance triathlons since 2008 and has

faced more than her fair share of obstacles.

It seems that every time she starts to

climb her way up the ITU rankings, an injury

or illness will swoop in to steal her thunder.

When Sophie had her best result at a major

WTS event in 2015, finishing 11th among

Elite Women at the ITU World Series Final

in London, she was struck by severe adrenal

fatigue shortly after, forcing her out of the

sport for a year.

Her most recent comeback was also shortlived.

She returned for the Montreal ITU

World Cup in August 2016. Racing against

athletes peaking for the Olympics meant she

was truly up against it, but she still rounded

out the top 20.

After progressing well through the summer

training block, she placed 11th at the ITU

World Cup event in New Plymouth, followed

by a second placing at the Elite National

series in Takapuna. But this success was again

followed by with injury; after heading overseas

to compete, Sophie had to return home

with a stress fracture in her sacrum.

Through all of the setbacks, Sophie has

hung tough. Although retirement has crossed

her mind more than once, the thrill of racing

keeps pulling her back in.

“When I had my year off with adrenal

fatigue, I thought I would really love it,” she

says. “I thought I would love not having to

get up early, not having to put my body

through what I do, but I ended up actually

really missing it. I was craving racing.

“I love racing, I love winning and I know

This attitude is what makes Sophie such

a fantastic role model. This, along with her

appreciative that you’re there and giving

your time; it’s a pretty amazing feeling.”

The next 12 months take a different shape

for Sophie as she aims to complete a full

season of domestic and international competition

injury-free.

setbacks, Sophie

has hung tough.

GALLAGHER 2017 WAIKATO RUGBY AWARDS

Waikato Rugby Union celebrated its end of season awards at the

Wintec Atrium, with Damian McKenzie receiving the top two awards;

the Gallagher Sportsperson of the Year and the prestigious Ian

Clarke Trophy. Hamilton Old Boys Rugby and Sports Club collected

three awards. Head coach, Mark McConnell, was winner of the

Grassroots Trust Senior Club Coach of the Year for his work with

the Hamilton Old Boys Senior A team. Hamilton Old Boys Senior A

continued their successful year by receiving the Vodafone Team of

the Year – Club, their success and the Women’s team winning the

club competition saw Hamilton Old Boys Rugby and Sports Club

awarded the Waikato Draught Club of the Year award. Waikato

Men’s Sevens picked up two awards, the team won the Hendl &

Murray Representative Team and coach Roger Randle won the Kurki

Representative Coach of the Year.

Waikato Women’s captain Sosoli Talawadua collected two awards

for her efforts this season. She won the Waikato Supporters Club

Women’s Player of the Year and then backed it up by winning the

Gallagher Women’s Representative Player of the Year. The Gallagher

Waikato Rugby awards recognise people and teams that have made

an outstanding achievement to Waikato Rugby in 2017. The evening

covered the entire spectrum of the game including coaches, players,

referees, volunteers and administrators from junior, school, club and

representative levels.

Waikato Bay of Plenty Netball has a new leader at the helm,

in the form of Rohan West. The newly appointed CEO has

returned home to New Zealand after spending 17 years

in Ireland and the UK making his name in various sports

management roles.

What do you love about living in Hamilton? I’m

still getting to know Waikato, but being back

home, and close to family is wonderful. Mum

and Dad are in Palmerston North, but I have

cousins in Papamoa.

What is your title and role description? CEO

of Netball Waikato Bay of Plenty. Lead the

Waikato Bay of Plenty and Magic staff to grow

and develop netball in the zone

What appeals to you about this role? Being

part of a fantastic sport that is in the DNA

of Kiwis and that is a key contributor to our

communities

completing an MBA in Sports Management at

Seton Hall University (New Jersey, USA), I had

various roles in strategic sports management

in Ireland and the UK for 17 years. I was

national manager for Sports with Ticketmaster

UK, with a client list including the FA, the RFU,

The Open Golf and NFL UK, just to name a

few. Post London 2012 Olympics, I moved

back into front line sports as Participation and

Commercial Director at Volleyball England.

Later, I completed my time in the UK as

Performance and Commercial Director at

British Basketball.

Personal involvement/participation in sports?

Like most Kiwis, I have played a very wide

range of sports, including a lot of indoor

netball in the ‘80s and ‘90s. My deepest

involvement in sport as a participant has been

rugby. I started playing Under 8s for Masterton

RFC, and have been a player, coach, referee

and volunteer administrator over the years.

Had one season playing American Football at

a US High School in the mid-1980s. That was

an incredible experience. Recreationally, I love

golf and tramping.

Give an overview of how you see the sport of

netball in NZ? As one of the largest team sports

in the country, it’s part of the fabric of our

society and a key part of our sporting DNA.

Our netball centres form one of the central

hubs of their communities and the sport offers

significant health, fitness, sporting and social

benefits to participants. Significant progress

has been made in the media and commercial

fields, with more growth being achievable.

What are some of your key goals in this new

role at WBOP Netball? Grow the number

and performance levels of participants of

all types/roles; Ensure long-term financial

stability for the organisation and the netball

centres; Ensure the Magic are a perennial

playoff calibre team; Help the personal and

professional development of our staff, players

and key volunteers

What major events are coming up for players/

coaches/umpires etc? The Waikato Bay of

Plenty netball calendar is always packed,

with coaching and umpiring courses going

on throughout the year. The Magic, Beko

League and Level 1 and Level 2 (U19 and U17)

representative teams are all active during the

spring and summer, with the Magic officially

starting pre-season training in late January.

First Magic home game of the 2018 ANZ

Premiership is Sunday, May 20 (Claudelands

Arena), along with a Beko League game as a

curtain raiser. Mark it in your diaries.

What has surprised you most about your

involvement with Netball WBOP? The level

of love and passion for the sport. Some-times

with large or dominant sports across the globe,

you get a sense that people are involved just

because it’s the big sport, there’s either little

choice or it’s “the thing to do”. With netball,

virtually everyone I’ve interacted with, deeply

loves the sport, believes in it and what it can

do for the participants. That’s wonderful to see

and be a part of.

What is exciting/unique about Netball WBOP?

Exciting – history and passion for the sport,

coupled with the outstanding talent we have

in player, coach, umpire, volunteer and staff

ranks. Unique – the geographic spread of the

zone, it’s massive.

Previous work history? I started my sports

management career as sponsorship manager

of the New Zealand Rugby Union during the

mid-1990s as the sport moved from amateur

to professional, helping establish the Super

Rugby franchises in New Zealand. After

foot in terms of health and stress

levels is heading into the holiday

season with a mindset of how “horrible and

busy” this time will be for you. This will in

fact manifest itself in your life the way you

think it will.

Sometimes things come up that we

have no control over. However, we have

the power to choose how we react or what

our mindset is in these situations. Stress

only creates more tension in our lives and

relationships, and greater imbalances in the

physical body.

What if you started to approach this

year’s holiday season with the fresh pair of

eyes? Don’t put yourself on the back foot by

already thinking that you are going to have

a rough time. Instead become more mindful

and aware of when your thoughts go into

these old patterns.

Along with time pressure and financial

concerns at this time of year, is an awareness

of how our body is. Sunshine, warmer

weather, holidays and beaches are meant

to be a fun, joyous time to recharge for

the upcoming year. Instead for many, it's

filled with more stress about how our body

doesn’t look the way we want it to, in our

summer clothes and swimwear.

The same principles above apply for this

situation. Don’t bring past “perceived failures”

into this summer season. Don’t keep

trying similar approaches like dieting, and

thinking similar thought processes into how

you desire to transform your body. Start

with a change in thoughts and learn to approach

yourself and your body with greater

love, acceptance and compassion.

Helping people change their mindsets so

they can achieve their health, happiness and

more energy to put back into our lives and

give to others. A lot of people are not good

at giving back to themselves. Some think

it is selfish, others think they are not worth

respecting themselves, some don’t feel they

have enough time and fall into the pressures

of life. Whatever the reason, we need to learn

to look after our own health and make it a

priority. Don’t leave it until you are ill to start

making changes.

The physical body

An added stress for many is that they haven’t

managed to achieve the summer body they

desire. Often these people need to address

the quality of their thoughts and their level

of self-love and self-respect, in terms of

how they are prioritising their health. The

physical body reacts to all stresses; physical,

mental and emotional. Usually those finding

it hard to achieve health, happiness and their

desired body shape often have imbalances in

all areas of their lives, allowing stress to affect

their hormones, cellular health and energy

levels.

Step 3 Nutrition for nourishment, selfrespect

and sustainable change. The times

of following restrictive, depressing, fear

building diets are slowly fading. People are

starting to realise that the old ways of doing

things are no longer serving our health –

they are creating more stress; fuelling a

downward spiral of disappointment and

lack of results.

Top nutrition tips

1. Go with the flow and rhythms of your

body. If you are stressed, go with foods

that are easier to digest and create more

flow in the body, such as nutrient-dense

smoothies or soups.

2. Trial meals without inflammatory foods,

like wheat, gluten (a large percentage of

people) and for some dairy and meat.

3. Eat greater amounts of plant-based

foods. Don’t cut out fruit; choose

nutrient-dense medicinal fruits like

berries, bananas, pineapple, and pawpaw.

4. Drink at least two litres of water each day.

5. Start your day with warm water and

freshly squeezed lemon. Some people

may need apple cider vinegar (with

mother culture in it). This will get the

digestive juices flowing.

6. If you get nervous or anxious regularly,

decrease/cut out caffeine.

7. Listen to your body when it is physically

hungry (empty stomach, gurgling

noises), and eat nutrient-dense meals at

this point. Then stop eating when you

are feeling pleasantly satisfied, save any

left-overs for another meal. This means

you will be save time, money and stay in

tune with how much your body needs,

rather than overfeeding it out of habit

or “thinking” it is what you need. Our

bodies know best.

Remember; if you find it hard to get out of

the prison of negative thinking, then you

could need some help doing so.

Step 2 Exercise doing the things you love.

If you are completely stressed out, the last

thing that is going to be good for you and

your desires is to doing something that you

dislike. Just because one form of exercise

works for one person doesn’t mean it will

work for you. The more you do things

you enjoy, the more your stress levels will

decrease and the less stress hormones you

will have, resulting in less inflammation and

the less your body will want to hold on to

any excess undesirable weight.

The Fitbit Ionic is the latest

smartwatch to be released - just in time

for your Christmas stocking. INSPO Fitness

Journal’s Alison Storey was invited to the launch event

to test-drive this new technology and the awardwinning

personal trainer was surprisingly impressed.

The latest Fitbit Ionic smartwatch is

definitely a smart-looking thing.

At first glance the screen seems a bit

wieldy, but perhaps they rightly figured it’s

tricky to wear reading glasses while exercising.

The Fitbit Ionic boasts capacity for 300+

songs, works with Paywave (in Australia but

soon to be launched in NZ), lets you track

water and food, and as well as the expected

steps, days of exercise, floors climbed,

and distance covered, it has links to Strava,

social media and loadable apps that provide

accountability and competition. Plus getting

notifications from your phone directly to

your wrist proves handier than you might

think while exercising.

New to this Fitbit offering is direct

connectivity to both Bluetooth scales and

state-of-the-art wireless headphones. It also

has a battery life of up to five days which is

impressive for any smart device.

The human body was built to move, and

inactivity is now the single biggest contributor

to disease. Ironically right up there with

it, is sleep deprivation.

So, people are staying awake longer doing

nothing and getting ill from it.

This needs to stop, and Fitbit has a keen

eye on the fact this is where the health industry

is headed. Its philosophy to use its enormous

data gathering power to help insurers

and populations monitor biomarkers like

sleep, daily activity and resting heart rates

positions them snuggly between the markets

of medical and consumer.

In line with this philosophy, Fitbit shares

a strategically beneficial relationship with

Diabetes NZ. Three-quarters of the 40 people

per day diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes

could reverse their diagnosis with changes to

diet and activity levels. (Statistics show there

are eight lower leg amputations a week in

New Zealand due to Type 2, and you would

think this motivation enough not to develop

the disease). Diabetes NZ’s successful work

with Fitbit in inspiring diabetics to move,

adds weight to the theory that you don’t need

motivation to act but that you can flip it - act

first, and motivation comes through seeing

the data.

As a trainer (or a doctor) access to accurate

rather than objective data transforms

the ability to guide training programmes and

advice. Tracking in depth biomarkers on a

consistent basis provides concrete information

to help clients understand how habits,

healthy or unhealthy, directly affect those

levels over a sustained period. This data

makes it very clear where tangible changes

can be made, however it’s alarming how

much activity you actually have to do, to

cover 12,000 steps plus the recommended

30mins of activity per day.

Probably the most valuable and topical

function on the Fitbit Ionic is its in-depth

sleep stages tracking. Sleep deprivation has

been directly linked with increased stress,

obesity, high blood pressure and its fair share

of accidents. Considering we are sleeping

on average two hours less per night than the

previous generation, lack of sleep is in danger

of becoming a very real mortality risk. Understanding

when and why deep sleep, light

sleep and REM happens and when it doesn’t,

provides ongoing evidence for change and

guides strategies to optimise recovery.

Due to the global data on your wrist, your

amount of sleep and cardio fitness can be

benchmarked against your age and gender

group, as well as against your personal

averages.

As a performance device, there is some

hefty sport science behind its monitoring

capabilities, and Fitbit Ionic’s upcoming

collaboration with Adidas should prove its

worth in enabling personalised exercise prescription,

injury prevention, nutrition and

recovery strategies.

Enabling high performance coaches to

measure sleep efficiency in long haul travelling

athletes and monitor how this affects

recovery and heart rates is already proving a

world class tool in prevention of injury (the

likelihood of which goes up an incredible 170

percent with less than six hours sleep).

For those without coaches, the Fitbit Ionic

has a handy coach function with guided

workouts between 7 and 20mins, and if its

de-stress you need, the relax function is a

guided breathing exercise.

As a one stop health and fitness shop, the

Fitbit Ionic ceaselessly reminds you to do

more and applauds you if you have a day full

of steps and sport. The social media interaction,

challenges, trophies and badges aim

to build in accountability and reward, and in

February 2018 Fitbit is planning another celebrity

challenge; pitting Fitbit users against

television personalities and triathletes.

There is still one trick though – if there is

no one checking on you to make sure you’ve

done the activity, it may become easier to

ignore the vibrations and beeps telling you

to move and keep watching reality shows. So

thankfully trainers are not made redundant,

but are in fact more empowered to help

through combining their knowledge and

coaching skills with this very smart device.

Oh, and did I mention you can swim with

it? That’s yet another definite bonus.

Follow these tips so that your family can

breathe easier this allergy season:

• Wash sheets, pillowcases, soft toys in the

bedroom weekly in water hotter than 55°C.

• Cover mattresses, quilts and pillows with

dust mite-resistant encasings.

• Open curtains and air bedding in the sunshine

and give them a regular clean.

• Consider venetian blinds or flat blinds,

which are easier than heavy curtains to

clean.

• Use a damp or electrostatic cloth to dust

hard surfaces (including floors).

• Ask someone else to do the vacuuming, as

it increases allergens in the air for up to

20 minutes. Also consider using a vacuum

cleaner with an asthma and allergy sensitive

HEPA filter.

• Keep rooms dry and well ventilated.

• Clear out the clutter.

Another way to manage hay fever and/

or allergy symptoms is to use products that

may reduce allergy triggers in day-to-day

life.

In this month’s column,

Monica van der Weerd

takes a closer look at trace

elements - namely what they

are and why we need them?

Trace elements are minerals the body

requires every day. You receive them

through your diet, specifically a whole

food diet of greens, fruits, grains, fish, meat

and nuts/seeds.

The daily amounts of these trace minerals

needed can be very small. For example the

daily dose needed of iodine is one tenth of

a milligram. Small as these amounts are – a

lack of trace elements can seriously impair

your health and wellbeing.

Here are a few examples:

CHROMIUM

Chromium exists in many natural foods

including brewer’s yeast, meats, potatoes (especially

the skins), cheese, molasses, spices,

whole-grain breads and cereals, and fresh

fruit and vegetables.

It helps the body burn sugar, and to turn

fats, carbohydrates and proteins into energy.

Chromium supports blood sugar levels and is

therefore recommended for type 2 diabetes

and weight management.

IODINE

New Zealand soils are low in iodine but this

can be derived from seaweed, seafood and fish.

Iodine is used by the thyroid gland for

the production of hormones essential for

growth, reproduction, nerve and bone

formation. Studies have shown mild to moderate

iodine deficiency can affect hearing,

intelligence and mental capability.

Cases of severe iodine deficiency can

result in goitre (swelling of the thyroid gland)

and hypothyroidism (caused by insufficient

production of the thyroid hormone by the

thyroid gland). It is also associated with

lethargy.

IRON

Iron is found in foods like beetroot, spinach,

broccoli and meat. When you lack iron the

body cannot produce enough red blood

cells. Iron deficiency may also result in skin

problems.

Lack of iron may be caused by a dietary

deficiency; blood loss or mal absorption and

can lead to tiredness, dizziness, pale skin,

breathlessness and brittle nails.

ZINC

A lack of zinc can lead to symptoms of loss

of appetite, taste changes, impotence, mental

slowness and wound healing.

Zinc is needed in every function and

structure of every cell membrane and in the

production of enzymes.

Zinc is found in beef and lamb, pumpkin

seeds, spinach, chickpeas and yoghurt.

A zinc test is easy to do. When you cannot

taste the zinc – your body needs more.

These are just a few of the trace elements

the body requires every day.They show how

important a balanced daily diet is.

Due to your health, during pregnancy,

due to mal absorption or medication. you

may need more trace minerals than are

being supplied through your diet.

For results and safety, it is important to

take the right combination that can be absorbed.

I personally like to recommend trace

minerals in a liquid form or a whole food

supplement in liquid or tablet, as these are

easy to absorb and have the correct ratios.

FIT FUTURES

Fit Futures opened its doors

five years ago and has been

helping people redefine

their limits and overcome

challenges ever since.

The Hillcrest gym, run by David Robson,

is set up specifically to help people

with physical disabilities, tailoring

training programmes to suit their needs and

ensure they achieve their specific personal

goals.

“Each client is focused on making gradual

progress and doing what many would consider

impossible, like walking and running at full

strength where previously they may not have

been able to move without a supportive device

such as a walker or walking stick,” explains

David.

One of his star members is Diana McGillivray,

who is attempting to complete the Round

the Bridges 6km walk with only the help of

walking sticks.

Diana lives with Cerebral Palsy but her attitude

and commitment to seek out challenges

and overcome them is truly inspiring.

She says that since becoming a member of

the FitFutures team, the effects have flowed

over to all areas of her life.

"Fit Futures is a place where I get to better

myself in a safe and friendly environment.

My confidence in other parts of my life has

increased; I give 100 percent and always leave

with a smile and knowledge that I improved

on my last session."

Diana credits the team that motivate her to

take on these challenges and to keep pushing

her limits.

“Having such a supportive and dedicated

team behind me inspires me to push myself

even more and Round the Bridges is just the

challenge I've been looking for to prove to

myself and others that anything is possible.”

Round the Bridges will be the biggest challenge

Diana has taken on so far, but she knows

it won’t be the last. She’s already planning to

compete in the event annually and has her

sights set on completing a mud run at some

point in the future.

as she, alongside David, is a judge for

the New Zealand Wheelchair Bodybuilding

Federation, which is the first of its kind in

Diana has been involved since the beginning

(2013) and thinks it’s great that people

with disabilities have the opportunity to

compete in an organisation that has world

FitFutures has 25 members, each with their

own challenges, goals and aspirations. “One

member would like to walk independently by

the end of next year; another would like to lose

20kgs (not easy when you can only exercise

using your upper body)," says David.

"One member came to me with almost no

function on his left side; he now presses 8kg

dumbbells overhead and can fully extend his

left arm and leg.”

David says these are just a couple of examples

that make it all worth it.

"Setting each Fit Futures member up for a

lifetime of healthy living and teaching them

how to incorporate fitness into their lives is

hugely rewarding, as is being part of the lives

of some amazing people.”

"I hope the achievements of our members

will encourage other people living with

disabilities to not only improve their physical

wellbeing, but to meet like-minded people and

enjoy being a part of the community."

More than 5500 runners and walkers are set

to participate in Lugton's Round the Bridges

event on Sunday, November 19. One of New

Zealand's oldest and most beloved annually

contested events, Lugton's Round the

Bridges attracts participants of all ages and

abilities, from elite athletes through to first

timers, families and children.

Established in 1945 by the Hamilton Harrier

Club (now known as Hamilton City Hawks),

Lugton's Round the Bridges started out as

a road race designed to showcase some

of New Zealand's top athletes, with past

participants including Barry Magee, Peter

Snell and Dick Quax.

Tauranga’s Bonnie McCash

says she can now set her sights

on anything after hiking almost

6000 metres above sea level.

Bonnie was one of 27 people to climb

Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro recently,

to fundraise for the Mental Health

Foundation.

The group of Kiwis and 76 local porters

took seven days to hike Africa's highest peak,

which is 5895 metres above sea level.

“It was big, but it was how do you eat an

elephant? One bite at a time. It’s the same with

Kilimanjaro,” says Bonnie.

The distance was a challenge but so too was

the mountain’s extreme climate. There were

glaciers, snow and freezing temperatures, as

well as excruciating desert-like heat.

“Kilimanjaro isn’t a physical thing, it’s a

mental challenge; you can do whatever you set

your mind to.”

It’s not the first time Bonnie faced a mental

challenge head on. The 38-year-old lives with

schizoaffective disorder.

“I’ve come so far and everyone who knows

me is so proud. But it hasn’t happened all of a

sudden, you need to be patient with yourself

and your recovery.

“It’s important to have a good support

system, a purpose such as working and a good

team who supports you.” Bonnie’s adventure

was another step in her journey. “I wanted

to show that we can still do amazing things

whether we’ve had a mental illness or not.

“It’s about knowing yourself, what you’re

capable of, how you can stretch yourself,

staying positive and having a support system

is really important – a lot of people feel they

have to go through a mental illness alone but

they don’t have to.”

Preparation is important and Bonnie gave

Kilimanjaro her all by preparing mentally

and physically.

“I went to the gym Monday to Thursday,

climbed up and down Mount Maunganui

every Saturday and went for a long walk on

Sundays with the other ladies doing Kilimanjaro.

I lost 14kg in preparation for my training.”

Bonnie’s hard work paid off. “Climbing

above the clouds and seeing the sunrise come

up above the clouds was amazing.”

She made it to Gilman’s Point, which is just

shy of the summit. “I got to the top of the crater

edge but I didn’t reach the summit because

I fell behind and there wasn’t enough time to

catch the rest of the team.

“I want to try Kilimanjaro again to reach the

summit. I can be a bit hard on myself actually.

I do realise it was quite an achievement, a once

in a lifetime kind of thing.”

Bonnie says there was more to the adventure

than the physical achievement. She

formed strong friendships, discovered a passion

for the outdoors and realised her personal

potential.

“The sky is the limit,” she says. She says the

key is taking small bites, one at a time.

“Set realistic goals for where you are at the

moment and don’t be afraid to step out of your

comfort zone slightly. Have that first goal as

something that you know you can achieve, and

then make it slightly harder, then you realise

‘oh I am capable of doing these things’.”

Resilience for Life Workshop: Learn how to

Navigate through Life’s Ups and Downs

Adult life is full of challenges; our financial independence, our

careers, our relationships as well our children/ families. Feeling

overwhelmed and/or anxious is a natural by-product of such

experiences or situations.

Chronic stress can occur in response to everyday stressors

that are ignored or poorly managed. The consequences of

chronic stress are serious, particularly as it contributes to

anxiety and depression.

Schizoaffective disorder is a mental health condition that

causes both a loss of contact with reality (psychosis) and mood

problems (depression or mania).

It can be thought of as a mix of mental health conditions.

There can be a wide range of symptoms that occur and, for

each person, the experience will be unique. Often, people with

schizoaffective disorder will see their doctor for problems with

mood, daily functioning, or abnormal thoughts.

Schizoaffective disorder is difficult to accurately diagnose as

it contains so many elements of other mental health conditions.

Regular and thorough checks with your doctor over time are

important to help build a picture of any difficulties you may be

experiencing.

If you think you have schizoaffective disorder, or you are

worried about a loved one, it’s important to talk to your doctor

or counsellor, or someone else you can trust, as a first step to

getting the important help you or they need. It’s important to get

diagnosis and treatment as early as possible.

Sir Richard Hadlee brings to life his

father’s day-to-day, meticulous account

of the 1949 NZ Cricket tour of England.

‘The Forty Niners’ tour holds a special

place in New Zealand cricket history, it was a

successful tour that earned NZ credibility as a

cricketing nation and made a profit. But more

importantly “it was an eight month tour based

around friendship bond, camaraderie, outside

of the performances on the field of play and

it’s a story that needs to be brought to life,

told and kept alive.”

Sir Richard decided to bring his father’s

diary to life after a conversation with commentator

Brian Waddle in 2014 about touring

and the changes over the years.

The project has been in the works ever

since that conversation and after getting the

green light from his brothers.

“A raw manuscript was typed out by a

lady who spent about a year doing it, so I had

a manuscript to work from, but there were

so many gaps because she found it difficult

to read dad’s writing - obviously because so

much was crammed into a page.”

Sir Richard used a magnifying glass and

countless hours filling in the blanks and deciphering

his father’s writing and getting all the

detail right.

“It was quite restless work where you just

want to get it finished and it took me eight

months to do the part that I needed to get

done, to have a manuscript that was a readable

document so a publisher could look at it

and put it into book form.”

Sir Richard says the process was long and

by no means easy, but is extremely satisfied

with the result.

Cataract

A CATARACT IS A GRADUAL CLOUDING OF THE

Cataract development is a normal process of aging.

Cataracts can also be present at birth, develop

from injuries, certain diseases, medications or longterm

exposure to sunlight.

As scary as cataracts might sound, modern

cataract surgery can usually restore vision

lost to cataracts — and can often reduce your

dependence on glasses as well.

When you are no longer able to see well enough to do the things you like to do,

cataract surgery should be considered. Thankfully cataract surgery is one of the safest

and most effective surgical procedures performed today. Surgery involves removing the

cataract and replacing it with an artificial lens. The procedure typically is performed on

an outpatient basis and does not require an overnight stay care facility. Recovery time is
