TIFF to debate sexual
harassment in film
industry

TORONTO: The organization behind the Toronto
International Film Festival is planning
a panel discussion on sexual harassment and
abuse in the industry.
The event on Dec. 1 at TIFF Bell Lightbox
will feature a chat with filmmakers and industry
representatives.
Organizers say the panel will explore the
first steps in creating a safer working environment
for people within the film sector.
Guest speakers will include Theresa
Tova, the president of the Toronto chapter of
the Canadian performers' union, ACTRA.
Also scheduled to speak are representatives
from the Canadian Media Producers Association,
Prospero Pictures, and the Directors
Guild of Canada. The panel is part of the
Breakfast at TIFF series.
"We are committed to providing a safe
and welcoming environment in which staff,
guests, volunteers and visitors are free from
any form of harassment or discrimination,"
TIFF said Thursday in a statement.
"We commit to open communication with
all members of our community, so that they
may speak up without fear."
TIFF says it also plans to take part in an
industry meeting of key stakeholders to be
hosted by ACTRA on Nov. 23 in Toronto.

18-month jail for sexually abusing daughters

HALIFAX: A 55-year-old
Nova Scotia man has been
sentenced to 18 months in
jail for sexually abusing
his two young daughters
over a 10-year period.
A Nova Scotia Supreme
Court ruling released
Tuesday says the incidents,
which occurred between
1990 and 1999, only
came to light when the oldest
daughter reported her
experiences during counselling.
The accused pleaded
guilty to two charges of
sexual interference.
The written decision by
Justice Mona Lynch says
the man started touching
his older daughter for a
sexual purpose when she
was two-and-a-half years
old, with the prosecution
estimating he abused her
at least 50 times over that
period.
Lynch says the father
threatened the girl by telling
her the family would
break up if she told anyone
— a responsibility Lynch
says "should not have been
put on a child."
The abuse stopped and
then the man began touching
his younger daughter,
who was three-years-old.
The man's wife and
mother both knew about
the abuse after the man
told them he had stopped,
and the decision says he
didn't touch his children
or anyone else "as far as we
know, for over 17 years."
Lynch said the blame
solely lies with the accused.
"There is no sentence
that I can give that would
give the older daughter
and the younger daughter
back what was taken from
them," Lynch wrote.
"They are in no way
to blame. They were innocent
children."
Markham mayor opposes holiday change

MARKHAM: Mayor Frank
Scarpitti will not support proposed
exemptions by York
Region to the Retail Holidays
Business Act, which would
allow all retail businesses to
operate during statutory holidays,
except for Christmas
Day.
“They are making this
decision without any input
from the residents, businesses
and retail employees,”
says Mayor Frank Scarpitti
in a press release.
“I would like to see region-wide
public consultations
on this.”
Markham City Council
passed motion on November
14, voicing objection to the
proposed changes.
“I am proud Markham
Council voted against this
proposal. It has been a tradition
in the province of Ontario
to have workers enjoy
those days off,” the mayor
said. “I think retail workers
should be entitled to the same
time off that the rest of us enjoy,
there are only nine days
a year when people can pause
and enjoy time with family
and friends.”
Statutory holidays are sacred
events in the calendars
of Canadians, the mayor said
in his press release.
Responding to public
calls, the provincial government
recently added an additional
statutory holiday,
Family Day, to give relief to
Ontario workers.
