Halloween Rally III Recap By Cathy Philipp Photos by George Luxbacher averick Region Porsche M enthusiasts swept through 74 miles of spooky roads from Allen to McKinney participating in the “Broom Ride Road Rally.” The weather was perfect for this October 28 celebration of fall and friendship that marked the region’s third annual Halloween Rally, organized by Don Sebert and George Luxbacher. Teams in 33 cars sought out ghouls in graveyards, while being challenged to not stop for a nap with old Van Winkle. Thirty-three teams Pirates headed out for this rally abounded, while others masqueraded as damsels and knights. Starsky and Hutch chased ZZ Tops as they tried to discover if Jimmy Hoffa’s body was buried at Charley’s Cement Plant. The rally teams were challenged to search for signs to unravel frightful word puzzles (“wordcrops”), such as driving by the headless horseman while spying mystical dragons and rams from photographs taken along the route. We chose not to stop for bait sandwiches, but were tempted by the grass-fed beef hamburgers. Teams tried not to be pranked when following directions to “stay on the route” through devilishly crooked backroads, conjuring up their witchcraft to troll for monkeys in palm trees and 24-hour air. Teams were warned not to be superstitious when passing through Climax, TX, and overcoming their triskaidekaphobia (fear of #13). Ralliers were rewarded for their otherworldly adventures when they landed their Porsche “brooms” at the Guitar Sanctuary in McKinney (https://www.theguitarsanctuary. com/). Thank you, Shane, for allowing us to sweep in and use this combination specialty guitar store and concert hall for sharing Halloween camaraderie with Maverick Region Porsche friends. All enjoyed the treats of pizza and refreshments that were generously provided by our Maverick Club. Awards were given to the top three finishers, as well as the DLBF (Dead Last But Finished) who should feel encouraged because they have only one way to go in future rallies . . . up! First place “ralliers” - Tom and Jan Martin The winners were: First Place driver/navigator team Tom and Jan Martin Second Place driver/navigator team Betty and Clay Perrine Third Place driver/navigator team Mary Anderson and Tom Cundari The coveted DLBF (Dead Last But Finished) award went to driver/navigator team Chris and Gabe Sorrels Prizes were also awarded for unearthly costumes. First Place went to the four lumberjacks: Saundra and Jon Hamel, and Rose and Richard Pope. Second Place went to Guinevere and Lancelot, BJ and John Harvey. Third Place went to witch and horned orc Sue Crimm and Carey Spreen. Thankfully, all’s well that ends well. No teams flew off the handle or were spirited away along the spooky rally course. All left the event with goose bumps, making plans for the next rally to be scheduled. Our four lumberjacks 25
