Bodega Pumpkin Pie
Last year, I decided to
stay in New York for
Thanksgiving with my
boyfriend.
I’m from Iowa, so going
home can be a hassle. I have
to get time off, travel during
the busiest time of the year,
spend $600-plus on a plane
ticket… It’s not easy, to say
the least. I was happy to
spend our first Thanksgiving
as boyfriends together.
Something about me: I’m
a planner. I need a plan. I
like to plan out every day
of the week, at least a week
in advance, constantly
afraid of double-booking
or forgetting something.
Wanna see a movie? Let
me see where I can pencil
you in. Wanna get drinks?
Looks like I have a spare
hour between the gym and
grocery shopping.
Needless to say, I planned
Thanksgiving thoroughly. A
friend of his was having a
gathering at his apartment:
I was going to bring a
pumpkin pie - but I can’t
cook, because it’s me, so I’d
be buying it a few days early
(before the Thanksgiving
rush at every grocery store
took over); I was going to
get a Thank You card for
our host; I even knew what I
was going to wear (my new
Bailey sweater with Rag &
Bone leather pants).
That Monday, I sent my
boyfriend a text clarifying
the time we should be there.
“I’m not going,” he
messaged me back.
“Why?” I asked.
“I have to work - I told you
that I might have to.”
For the record, ladies and
gentlemen, he did not.
He told me that he was
requesting it off, that it
would be easy because he
was a senior server at his
restaurant, and he told me
so a month ago.
I got moody and decided
to cancel everything and
eat McDonalds in bed.
Thanksgiving morning, I got
a text: “Hey everyone, we’re
on our way!” It was a group
text with five of our mutual
friends.
I didn’t realize I actually
knew people going, and
being around people I
know definitely beat being
alone… but I had no pie, my
new Bailey sweater needed
to be washed, and I
didn’t have a Thank
You card.
I jumped out of
bed, threw on a
pair of sweatpants,
and got to work. I
grabbed the sweater,
combined it with a
load of darks, raced
to the basement and
tossed it into the
wash. I ran upstairs,
shuffled around for
a blank card and
wrote a Thank You
card, complete with a poorly
drawn turkey on the front
(I’m a writer, not an artist).
I took the elevator back
to the basement - I hadn’t
turned on the washing
machine. I turned it on,
grabbed my wallet and ran
out to the corner bodega.
I couldn’t believe it, but
they had pumpkin pies. I
ran back home and put the
laundry into the dryer.
I arrived an hour late, and
someone else brought
a homemade pumpkin
pie, but it was still one
million percent better than
McDonalds in bed.
Macchia
MEET 2018 MR. EAGLE
This year’s new Mr. Eagle, Joseph
Macchia, has big plans to give back to
the community on behalf of The New
York Eagle Bar. He is honored to have
been selected and plans to take his
role seriously. His goal is to work with
former Mr. Eagles in presenting some
new parties and great events and
urges people to continuously check
The Eagle’s website (eagle-ny.com) for
more information.
He also wants people to know that
you don’t necessarily have to be into
leather to visit The Eagle; The Eagle
welcomes everybody. Get Out! shared
some questions and answers with
Joseph, and we congratulate him on
winning the competition.
How did you prepare to become Mr.
Eagle?
This was my second time competing; I
had done the contest in 2014 and was the
second runner up, so this time around I
knew what to expect. However, you never
know the questions the panel of judges
will ask you during your interviews. When
you register to run for Mr. Eagle, you
fill out an application about yourself
personally and about the community
service you do. Also, knowing some
history about the bar and the leather
community is helpful. For me, this time it
was about the person I was the first time
I ran and the person I am now. When I
ran the first time I was fairly new to the
leather community. So I have learned a
lot by going to leather events, going to
the bar and watching the past Mr. Eagles
during their title years and attending
other contests. I also am a different
person than the one who competed in
2014, more confident and outgoing,
which is important in being Mr. Eagle.
During the competition you are given
a pop question, which is usually a fun
question. They are looking to see your
personality and how you are in answering
a question totally off guard.
What do you have in store for your
reign this year?
I will be hosting several workshops and
fundraisers. I recently co-hosted a benefit
with the former Mr. Eagle 2017, John-
John Punki, called PIEL, a Latin leather
dance party for the people of Puerto
Rico. We raised over $1,700. In November
I will be hosting a rope bondage
workshop, and then on December 14 a
benefit called Snowball Naughty or Nice.
The benefit will raise funds for my charity,
Help Is On the Way Today.

We assist and work with children, teens
and youth living with HIV and AIDS.
The fight against AIDS is far from
over, and I want to continue to have a
conversation about prevention, PrEP
and living with the disease. There is still
work to be done. I will also be working
on cancer awareness with my campaign
#KnowYourBodyListenToIt. My goal
is to make people more aware of the
messages our body sends us. In 2015 I
was diagnosed with stage one testicular
cancer. I ignored my body for several
weeks after finding a small lump. Finally,
when I decided to go to the doctor, the
lump turned out to be cancer. In May
I will compete in Chicago at IML and
represent the New York Eagle, as well
as working with Team Eagle on Cycle
for the Cause. One of my goals is to
work with the former Mr Eagles on some
kind of event later in the year. Starting
in December I will also be hosting a
bi-monthly bar party at The Eagle, so
check out the Eagle’s website for more
information.
Wednesday for the weekly Jockstrap
Party. What made me come back after my
first time was that I felt like I found a bar
where I could be myself. And that is my
favorite thing about The Eagle.
What can you tell the public about The
Eagle to coax them to visit?
You don’t have to be into leather or
kink to come to the bar. I think some
people, including friends of mine, think
that you have to be into that to come to
The Eagle to have a good time. I have
taken several of my own friends after
work, and what I can say is that they are
now regulars at the bar. The Eagle is a
bar where everyone is welcome. You will
meet a lot of great people; from the guys
at the door to the bartenders, everyone
is welcoming. Whether you own leather
or not, come on down, put on a pair of
jeans and boots and head to the bar. I
guarantee you will have a great time, and
while you’re there you can always pick up
some leather or even a jockstrap at the
ManSkins store on the second floor.
What does this mean for you on
a personal level?
Being Mr. Eagle is a tremendous
honor. … This is about family. The
leather community is an amazing
group of people who give back so
much to the community and each
other. I wanted to be part of that.
I am extremely proud to represent
The Eagle as well as the leather
community. I look forward to the
year ahead and see[ing] what I
can offer to the community this
year.
What is your favorite thing that
The Eagle has to offer?
That’s a great question. First off,
they have some of the best music
I have heard in the city, and on
any given night of the week they
have great parties and events.
The Eagle is also about giving
back to the community, hosting
many fundraisers throughout
the year. During the summer the
beautiful rooftop is open, and it’s
just a great place to meet new
people and hang with friends.
One of my favorite nights is
Kim Sledge
‘40 Years of Disco’ Tour...Still Family
Sister Sledge is about to embark on a massive tour embracing the 40th
anniversary of disco. It will take them to three continents, beginning in Australia,
middling in the Netherlands and the U.K., a New Year’s Eve extravaganza in
Atlantic City, and then back to the U.K. Artists also included on the tour will be
Tavares, Rose Royce, Boney M, The Real Thing, Odyssey and George McCrae.
With clubs like Studio 54, disco became popular in the early ‘70s and exploded in
1977 with the album “Disco Fever” and “Saturday Night Fever” in 1978. Anthems
such as “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge and “YMCA” by the Village People
have lasted through the decades and are still played at every party everywhere in
the world.
Vocal group Sister Sledge originally consisted of sisters Kim, Kathy, Debbie and
Joni Sledge. Symbolizing radical family ties and values, the faction celebrated
U.S. and international success at the height of the disco era with their album
and single, “We Are Family,” which earned a Grammy nomination. The group
also performed for Pope Francis in 2015 at the World Festival of Families in
Philadelphia, where they are originally from. After Kathy left the group, Sister
Sledge remained a trio until the death of sister Joni in 2017. Kim and Debbie
remain strong and ready to tour.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Kim Sledge while on her way driving to New
York City to visit her sick aunt in the hospital, and picking up sister Carol on the
way, proving that family ties are still held in high esteem. Despite her present
anxiety over her aunt, Kim was warm and friendly, with a very special spirit that you
couldn’t help but fall in love with.

Aside from your upcoming Australia and
U.K. tour, you will be celebrating New
Year’s Eve at The Tropicana in Atlantic
City?
Yes, we’re looking forward to it.
Your song, “We Are Family,” became one
of the biggest anthems ever. What was it
like for you the first time you heard it on
the radio? Do you recall that feeling you
had?
I absolutely do! I remember the day. It was
surreal. We were so excited, because we
looked at this little radio and heard our voice
coming out of this. It was like, “Oh my gosh.”
It was just so exciting. I remember it to the
day.
Your song was adopted by the LGBT
community. It’s played at every party,
wedding, sweet 16, musical gatherings,
community events...
You know, when I really think about that, I
am so… I can’t
even describe
the words. I am
beyond grateful.
The gratitude
and the privilege
and the honor.
Seriously, I’m not
just saying it. I’m
a believer, and I
really believe that
things don’t just
happen. I think
that there is a
God, and I really
believe it. For
him to have given
us that song to
sing, I’m just so
eternally grateful
for that. I’ve seen
what it does to
people. I’ve seen
what it does to families and groups.
Well, if you believe that music can
influence the world, that would be the
song to do it.
I believe that. Music is a uniting, healing
force. It brings everybody together. That’s
actually what disco did too. When we started
singing it was just music. Even when we went
through the disco era, it was still just music.
Because music, I don’t care what category
you put it in, good music is going to heal
the soul. It’s going to bring folks together.
It’s going to make you happy. It takes you
to another place, and that’s what it should
do. You want to be transformed for a minute
and just say, “We’re OK, and we’re really OK
together.” Let’s drop all of our differences
and embrace each other through music.
That’s what it’s really about. We’re a family.
Kim, how old were you when you found
that you could sing?
Our grandmother used to walk up to the
keyboard. She had one of those old wooden
pianos. She would bring us up to the piano
and say, “Perform!” We were 3, 4, 5 and 7,
and she would give us breathing skills and tell
us it was an instrument, show us the different
levels and areas of the vocal chords, tell us
we’d have to use it properly through the
chest. She said also, “I want you to be able to
sing a cappella. If everything else fails, then
hit a tune. It’s your instrument.” But it was
fun. She made it fun. She was a real jokester.
It was discipline, but we loved to sing. So for
us it was a form of recreation. We just did it.
So it went way
back, way back.
Singing with
your sisters all
these years,
did that ever
become a
challenge
as far as
getting along
together?
We got along
exactly as sisters
get along,
but I think we
were a little
closer. We were
each other’s
playmates,
confidants,
because when
you’re coming
up in that environment we were each other’s
recreation. We were sheltered from a lot of
things when we were little and when we were
on the road. We didn’t know anything. We
had everyone with us, our uncle, our aunt,
grandmother. We were literally a family on
the road. We were each other’s sort of peer
group. Not that we didn’t all go to school and
everything. I remember when I was in high
school I was really into team sports, but we
had rehearsal. So I would get in trouble every
day, because I would just go to basketball
practice, volleyball practice or I used to run
too.

So we got along great. I got in trouble every
day, because I wanted to do that instead of
rehearsals, but we had a normal life, which
was a little crazy life. You might be in Japan,
seriously that weekend, but on Monday you
were in class. It was the real deal, it really was.
But why would you share something like that,
because nobody believed you. It was fun, we
had fun, and I tried to savor every bit of being
a normal high school or junior high school
student. You know you have your peers, your
girlfriends, the fun things that you do.
(Just then sister Carol jumped in the car).
Carol: Hi Eileen.
Nice to meet you, Carol.
Carol: Nice to meet you, too.
How many are there of you?
Kim: There are five sisters, and of course Joni
is in heaven. Carol would come in and out
every time we needed her, like when there
was a pregnancy or something. Actually, Carol
was the one that really started us. I mean,
it was my grandmother and everything, but
when you talk about singing in the business,
we were her backup singers. She would be in
the mirror, and we were all lined up. She was
the lead singer, and she’s singing her little
songs, and we would be her backup singers.
If you could say anything to your fans, what
would you say?
I would say, be encouraged. That’s the first
thing that came to mind, be encouraged.
We all have our different faiths, and my faith,
I’m not impressing any faith on anyone, but
I’m just saying for my own, I know that I see
miracles. I’ve seen God do amazing things.
I saw your testimonial video.
OK, cool, and I really believe that with faith
you can move mountains, and I really believe
that you should never give up. Our mom
would always say, “Finish the work.” Finish
what you start, stick with it, finish it. I was
watching this speaker on television. He was
talking about not procrastinating. There’s a lot
of things that I have that I want to do, all kinds
of different projects and things, but I’ll put
them down and say, “I’ll get to it.” But here’s
the thing, after I was listening that night, I
got up, I lifted up all the things I was working
on. You know you have that closet that you
want to clean out? You promise yourself you
are going to try it, like take a tennis class,
something like that, but you never get to it.
Well do it. Just do it, because you don’t know
what’s going to happen the next day, and an
opportunity might open up from that thing.
You never know what’s down the road. So
that’s what I would say. Be encouraged, finish
what you start, and go for it.
