and residents are invited to attend
and offer feedback to the
Board regarding the community.
A WCIA Board executive session
will be held on a date to be announced
at the Civic Center. If
you have a problem or issue you
would like to discuss privately
with the Board, please call
Annette Baldwin by Saturday,
December 9 th , so that time can
be allotted for you.
Holiday Decoration Contest Is Underway
Forest and Westlake will be held again this year. Each subdivision
will receive first, second and third place prizes. First place is a $100
gift certificate, second place is a $75 gift certificate and third place
is a $50 gift certificate.
Many of our residents enjoy decorating their homes and yards for
the holiday season. We encourage each of you to participate. Start
decorating now as the judging will be held on the on the 11 th and
12 th of December in order to give our residents two full weekends
in December to decorate. Awards will be given within 24-48 hours
by a Board representative to the resident.
Happy Holidays To Our Neighbors
The Westlake CIA Board and volunteers wish each of you a very Happy Holiday Season… A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
REPORTING NUISANCES &
HEALTH HAZARDS TO HARRIS COUNTY
If your neighbor has garbage, junk, trash, construction materials,
mattresses, box springs, couches, chairs or any other type of junk
that attracts vermin, you can directly report this to the Harris
County Public Health and Environmental Services online. You can
also report dead birds and other types of problems as well. Here
is the website for online reporting: www.hcphes.org/templates/
onlineservices.htm. Telephone calls might be necessary if you do
not receive a reply as to the status of the investigation. Keep a copy
of your online form in case that is the case. The telephone number
is: 713-439-6000.
TREAT OUR PARKS, GREENBELT
& AMENITIES WITH RESPECT AND CARE
Both Westlake Forest and Westlake have added many lovely new
amenities for the enjoyment of all of our residents. We have also
installed cameras throughout these areas and we have noticed
that some residents are not clear on how to behave in the parks.
Please refrain from picking flowers, throwing rocks from around
the fountains onto the fountains, wading in the fountain, climbing
on the fountain, dumping sand into the streambed at the Westlake
park, driving vehicles on the greenbelt in Westlake or the parks
in either Westlake or Westlake Forest, drinking alcohol on any
community owned property or vandalizing any of the community
owned property.
While most of us have a basic understanding of how to behave in
public, there are a few deviants who frequent our parks and other
common areas. The vandalism and graffiti simply waste community
financial resources. If you see anyone who is behaving destructively
in our parks and common areas, please call the Sheriff’s Office and
also let a Board member know immediately. We do not want our
parks and common areas to take on a rundown look that is ugly
and repulsive.
TRAVELING DURING THE
HOLIDAY BREAK?
If you plan to be away from home for more than one night during
the Holiday break, please call the Clay Road substation at 281-463-
2648 and ask for a vacation watch form to be emailed or faxed to
you. If you are on our info.westlake@gmail.com email list, a form
can be emailed to you; you will then complete the form and send
it to the Sheriff’s Office Fax at 281-463-8246.
The contract deputy and district patrol will check your home for any
signs of criminal activity throughout the day while you are gone. In
addition, the patrols will pass by your home more frequently during
your absence, proactively providing higher visibility.
It takes only a few minutes to complete a vacation watch form. Make
sure you have made arrangements for newspaper pick up and mail
pick up while you are away.
REPORTING CRIMES AND ONGOING ACTIVITY
Some of our residents are confused about whom to call for various
types of crimes and suspicious ongoing activity. We have a contract
with the Sheriff’s Department which includes a deputy in a marked
vehicle in our subdivisions 40 hours per week. Westlake and Westlake
4 December 2017 | Community Newsletter
www.WESTLAKECIA.ORG
Forest share these costs in order to provide a more secure environment
for you and your family. In addition to our contract deputy, we
have deputies who work in the subdivisions at odd hours of the day
and night-sometimes in marked units, sometimes in civilian vehicles.
However, if you do not call the Sheriff’s Office when a crime occurs or
when you see suspicious activity, the deputies have no way of knowing
that a crime has occurred or that suspicious activity is happening in an
ongoing fashion. We encourage you to contact the Sheriff’s Office for
any type of crime… whether it is serious in nature such as a burglary
of a home or motor vehicle or suspicious activity that is occurring at
the moment. To report crimes, call the following numbers:
Emergency: 9-1-1
Non Emergency: 713-221-6000
Citizens can also report a crime online, upload video and pictures and
use the I-Watch application from an I-Pad. Download I-Watch Application
at www.iwatchharriscounty.com.
talk with them, tell them to leave your property as you are not
interested. If they do not leave immediately, call the Harris County
Sheriff’s Office at 9-1-1 as you should be feeling threatened at this
point. If you have an outside storm door, keep it locked at all times
when you are home.
There is an uptick in online email from hackers who have various
nefarious intentions. Never click on a link that is sent from someone
on your email list but includes no explanation of something you
are expecting. Friends get hacked and these links which are used
when emailing their lists (that would include you) allow instant
access to your computer for various reasons that are either criminal
or very shady.
If you get a phone call from the IRS saying that you owe them money,
hang up. The IRS never calls taxpayers about taxes owed. Their
communications are relayed only through the US mail.
If you are observing ongoing activity in your area of the neighborhood,
call Annette Baldwin at 281-578-9118. This telephone number is listed
on the inside of the back page of your newsletter each month. Ongoing
activity can be anything from teenagers consistently violating curfew
to loud music to possible drug dealing from a home. It can also include
illegal parking, hazardous waste dumping, environmental threats,
etc. If you wish to speak with the contract deputy about the activity,
he will call you, come to your home or meet you at the Sheriff’s Office
Store front located on Fry Road. If you want Ms. Baldwin to talk with
the deputy and follow up on the resolution of activity, she can call you
when the information is made available.
ANNUAL DUES ARE PAYABLE
BY JANUARY 31, 2018
The annual dues of $475 per year are payable on or before January 31,
2018. The invoices for dues were mailed and received before mid-October
2017. This was done to enable you to pay something each month
prior to the deadline of January 31, 2018, if you wanted to do this.
We encourage each of our homeowners to pay promptly as the cost to
the homeowner for collection begins mounting on February 1, 2018.
If you would like to establish a monthly pre-payment program for your
2019 dues, contact PCMI at 281-870-0585.
TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST
CRIME DURING HOLIDAYS
The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with
shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much
more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are
some tips for our residents:
Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in
the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and
shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston.
Make arrangements for UPS, Fed Ex or USPS packages to be delivered
to a neighbor who is always home or to your office. Leaving
packages at your front door is an open invitation to thieves.
Solicitors at your door need to be analyzed carefully before unlocking
the door. If you do not have a window that allows a view
of the person who is at your door, consider installing a peep hole
in the door. Never open the door to someone you do not know. If
someone knocks at your door that you don’t recognize, ask them
to state their reason for being at your home. If you don’t want to
Community Newsletter | December 2017
Do not leave a garage door opener in your vehicle which is parked
outside of the garage. The reason for this is obvious. Consider
locking your garage door from the inside when you come home
after work or shopping. This eliminates criminals who use random
garage door frequencies to break into homes.
Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be
aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores.
Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for
your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license
with your credit card; you will always have to present identification
(usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are
long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be
tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but
the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be
within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt,
ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great
times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit
cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your
purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter.
Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never
set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a
shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your
shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap
is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of
your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards
in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket.
When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for
suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your
vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in
through the passenger side. Check the back seat and back floor
before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children,
lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in
your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another
look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get
your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the
doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going
into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you.
When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is
not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload
all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process.
5
www.WESTLAKECIA.ORG
Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy
view from the street.
When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a
radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. Upon returning
home, check the sides of your house and the area across the
street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking.
If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit
your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to
your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door.
All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows
should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake.
If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick
up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery
for these. Complete a vacation watch form and submit it to the
Sheriff’s Office in Clay Road. Fax this to 281-463-8246.
By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and
happy holiday for you and your family.
PARKING LAWS STRICTLY
ENFORCED DURING HOLIDAYS
Often, we have guests during the holidays. Please advise them that
the parking laws are enforced in both Westlake and Westlake Forest.
Tell them to park with the traffic and not to block fire hydrants
or neighbors’ driveways. Fire engines and ambulances must have
clear access to each street in both neighborhoods at all times.
IT’S TREE PLANTING SEASON
December and January are ideal times in Houston to plant trees
and shrubs. The cool weather combined with the rain offer trees
and shrubs the opportunity to establish themselves. In addition,
the soft winter sunshine and warm days nurture the plants.
If you are thinking of adding to your landscaping, this is an ideal
time to do it. Whether you select a 5-gallon plant or large trees
planted by a tree planting service, your plants and trees will have
the highest hope of survival this summer if planted now.
Be sure to select trees and shrubs, which are recommended for
the Gulf Coast summers. Native plants are always best and use
the least amount of water.
STREETLIGHTS OUT?
Please report outages of streetlights to Centerpoint Energy. Get
the pole number as well as the nearest street address and call
713–207-2222 or go to their website and complete an on-line form.
It is very important that non-working lights are reported for the
safety of our each of us. Call it in, call it in.
KINDNESS MATTERS
From: http://www.glgc.com/kindness/why.html
Why Be Kind? Kindness leads to many of the virtues to which we value
and desire and can lead us wherever we want to go: to a happier life, to
being more Christ-like, to enlightenment, to making a difference in this
world, to raising loving and kind children. The reasons for being kind
are innumerable. Here are just a few:
• Being kind feels good. Doing something for someone else really does
make us feel good. Just as running releases endorphins, so does kindness.
Make someone smile and you’ll feel better for having done so.
• God smiles on kindness. Whether we are Christian, Jewish, Muslim
or Buddhist, kindness is an important part of the exhortations of all
these religions. Both Buddha and Christ were kind and encouraged
their followers to be likewise.
• Kindness broadens our perspective. In order to be kind, we have to
pay attention to what is happening around us. As we notice more things
and help others, we get a glimpse of other ways of looking at things. A
broader perspective helps us to keep things in context.
• Kindness softens our heart. When we look for kind deeds, beauty and
the opportunity for kindness, we’ll find that we are more compassionate
and more tolerant. As we practice empathy, it opens our heart to others.
• Kindness brightens our world. When we are kind to people, it makes
them happy. The more people who experience kindness from us, the
more happy people will be in our lives. When those around us are happier,
our world becomes a brighter, lighter place to live.
• Kindness helps people feel respected and less alone. By recognizing
someone’s need for help and acting on it in a compassionate manner, it
makes the recipient feel valued. It also makes the giver feel better about
themselves and more connected.
• Kindness makes people want to be around us. One of the most common
responses to kindness is gratitude. People appreciate what we’ve done
for them. Our kindness is very attractive, so they want to be around
us and actually seek us out. The Buddha lists this as one of the eleven
impacts of loving kindness, but he put it even more strongly, saying:
“Loving kindness will make people love you.”
• Kindness bears wonderful fruit. Kindness begets kindness, openness,
health and reduces the effects of stress on our bodies and our hearts.
In many ways, kindness is like Liquid Plumber for the soul: it opens us
up, clears out the dross and dwells lightly in our hearts.
• Kindness begets kindness. When you are kind to others, the impact
of your action doesn’t stop there. Many times the recipient of your
kindness and others who see or hear about your kindness are inspired
to be kinder. The ripples of kindness are truly endless.
• Your kids will learn from your example. When you are kind to friends and
acquaintances, your kids will be more likely to be kind as well. People
often treat their children with kindness, but can be short with a crazy
driver, strangers or others outside the family. This can cause “us and
them” thinking that devalues others as “less” than ourselves. Kindness
breeds tolerance and understanding.
GET INTO THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT!
Feeling a little bah-humbug? Want to be the Grinch and stay that way?
It is OKAY! Not everyone can get into the holiday mood, but you can at
least try! Here are 10 ways to get into the holiday spirit!
1. Reach out to family and friends. Make phone calls to parents, siblings,
aunts and uncles, cousins, whomever you can reach. Ask how they’re
doing, exchange news and feelings and express your love for them.
2. Decorate the house. Hang up lights in front of your house, put up
decorations, do everything! Hang wreaths on your front door and put
up flashy lights to show off your spirit! The more decorations you have,
the more festive you’ll feel!
3. Listen to holiday music. Listening to holiday music will pump you up
for the holidays! Play holiday music in the car, at home or just when you
have free time. As you listen, think of all the exciting things that come
with the holidays!
4. Volunteer. You will immediately see, feel and soak in how blessed
YOU ARE.
5. Throw a party! Have a get together with people you haven’t seen in
a long time and express yourself as much as
you want. After all, it’s the holidays, a period
of celebration.
6. Go see some holiday lights. If you have
nothing better to do, go to your nearest festival
to look at the beautiful holiday lights.
During the nighttime, let yourself be mesmerized
by the illuminating lights wrapped
around trees and ornaments.
7. Watch some holiday movies. What better
way to get into the holiday spirit than by
watching the classics? If movies don’t cut it
or you simply don’t have the time, take a few
minutes to watch some holiday videos. There
are plenty online that will lift your mood and
get you all pepped up for the holidays!
8. Eat seasonal food (with healthy ingredients!)
Bake holiday cookies shaped like turkeys,
Christmas trees, Santa, elves, presents,
anything! After all, a baker’s imagination
is endless. If you want to be fancier, cook
some holiday food that your parents used
to make you.
9. Gift kindness, in all forms. It has become
a tradition to buy presents and gift them to
your loved ones during the holiday season.
The holidays are a time of appreciation and
love. Don’t forget about those random acts of
kindness to whomever, just because.
10. Have fun! It’s alright if everything isn’t
perfect and in fact, that just proves you’re
human. In a couple of years, you’ll all be
laughing about disastrous moments during
the holiday season and it’ll all be fine!
HEALTHIER INGREDIENTS FOR A HEALTHIER HOLIDAY
You can make trouble-free recipe substitutions that will not sacrifice the flavor, but will result
in a healthier recipe outcome. Check out these healthier holiday ingredient alternatives:
Instead of sour cream or cream cheese, try: Greek yogurt
Greek yogurt makes a wonderful protein-packed creamy substitution in a variety of dishes
and sweet treats. Dips, salad dressings, creamy casseroles and cheesecake recipes are just
a few recipes to try. For best results choose the plain Greek yogurt variety.
Instead of bread crumbs, try: Coconut flour
Add crunch to your lean protein sources or veggies with coconut flour, an ingredient that
offers more protein, fiber and vitamins than traditional breadcrumbs. Even better, you are
offering holiday guests a gluten-free food option.
Instead of added sugars, try: Fruit puree
Most baked goods are packed with added sugars. For a natural sweetness and additional
fiber try adding pureed fruits like dates or banana to replace some or the entire sweetener
in baked goods.
Instead of heavy cream, try: Tofu
Substitute heavy cream with silken tofu to add protein and reduce fat content in your holiday
recipes. Pureed tofu can be used in puddings, milk bases or sauces. Your vegan friends will
be thrilled with this recipe substitution.
Instead of using oils in baked goods, try:
Unsweetened applesauce or bean puree
Replace at least half of the oil in your favorite baked goods with unsweetened applesauce
or bean puree. The substitution will help maintain a moist baked good while not altering
the taste.
Instead of potatoes, try: Cauliflower
Keep your carbohydrate side dishes in check this holiday season by substituting cauliflower
for potatoes in mashed potatoes. Cooked cauliflower can be mashed up easily to create a consistency
and flavor similar to mashed potatoes.
KATY AREA RETIRED EDUCATORS (KARE)
On October 4, 2017, Katy Area Retired Educators (KARE) held their first
meeting, after Hurricane Harvey, at Midway Barbeque with Aaron Alejandro
as their guest speaker. Mr. Alejandro is the Executive Director of
the Texas FFA Foundation who shared with the retirees “You may be
Retired, but your Voice is Not.” Many thanks to Midway Barbeque who
has graciously agreed to host KARE meetings until the Merrell Center is
restored. For more information about the Katy Area Retired Educators
GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their
permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure,
super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product.
Keep flowers picked for more bloom.
• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.
• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet
peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13;
Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.
• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson
cold weather damage. May acidify again.
• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum
and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.
• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.
• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds
die from lack of water than lack of food.
Boy Scout Troop 584 was living the Boy Scout
Oath when Hurricane Harvey struck the community
of Katy Texas. “To help other people at
all times” resulted in the Troop volunteering
over 600 hours to assist in rescuing stranded
residents, cleaning out flooded homes and
assisting at local crisis centers.
Every day we would receive requests from
members of our Troop with a list of homes or
businesses that needed help. There were a few
troop families that were flooded and needed
help but many others were friends of Troop
families. In some cases, we randomly drove
into neighborhoods and went door to door
asking if anyone needed help. In other cases,
we would be at a house doing clean up and
just moved to the neighbor next door or across
the street. There was so many houses that we
didn’t know the owner, just went in to help.
They started doing water rescues on the
Tuesday, August 27th and that moved right
into house cleanups. They didn’t miss a day.
Since the boys were out of school, they worked
every day until school returned September
11th. The troop split up into different crews
and went to as many houses as they could. It
wasn’t uncommon for us to be in 3-5 houses
per day. Since the boys went back to school,
we have still been doing weekend cleanups.
All of the work was focused in Cinco Ranch,
Kelliwood and Grand Lakes Subdivisions. The
boys never went into any house and were
concerned with the size or amount of work to
be done. They just knew that they had to get
started, work hard and get the job completed.
Every project we did was big but after the first
day or 2, it was like a well oiled machine. Almost
every house required complete removal of all
furniture, sheetrock, insulation, doors, moldings,
cabinets, bathroom fixtures and flooring.
The boys learned what needed to be done and
took on varying roles on each crew. Some were
doing sheetrock, some doing base boards, others
removing doors, some doing the carrying to
the curbs and lastly the ones on clean up duty.
Every boy had a role and was focused on the
tasks. Some houses were very small and some
were enormous. But the damage and losses
were just as impactful to every home owner or
business owner, regardless of size.
The boys learned so much. The first was “Be
Prepared.” They learned of how to prepare
for a crisis and how to handle it. They learned
how to coordinate priorities for clean up. They
learned how to cooperate and work as a team.
And most of all, they learned how to give back
to the community and neighbors with no expectations.
I never heard one boy complain
about the long hours, sore muscles or being
tired. At the end of every day they went home,
showered and woke up the next day ready
to tackle more houses on the list. One of the
biggest things they saw and experienced was
“humanity and compassion.” Being part of a
community where so many people were helping,
where strangers would bring them water
and sandwiches, where people gave them
tools and supplies. It opened their hearts for
the people that were impacted.
It was one of the proudest times I have had
in the Troop. Giving their time and effort with
no expectation for anything in return made
every parent so proud. To see the boys act like
young adults was amazing. They worked hard
and had fun. They might have just struggled
with an overloaded wheelbarrow but they
came back into the house with a smile and
ready for more. They bonded with each other
and build deeper friendships as they worked.
Seeing them tackle hard projects and use the
skills they have learned over their years in Boy
Scouts was great to observe.
Journey to Bethlehem
December 7-10, 2017
Start your journey here, experience the night hope was born. Journey to
Bethlehem is an outdoor, walk-through drama portraying the birth of Christ.
In 2016, nearly 6,000 guests followed the winding trail, led by experienced
guides, through a series of live action scenes, tracing the journey Mary and
Joseph took centuries ago. Your travels will lead you through the village of
Nazareth, into the camp of the Magi, past the Roman census and open-air
markets of Judea, ultimately ending at the simple manger where Christmas
began and hope was born. For the last fifteen years, Current - A Christian
Church has been presenting this event to the Katy community. Each year
the event grows. With live animals and more than 200 actors in costume,
Journey to Bethlehem, is an annual tradition for many and serves to remind
everyone who participates of the true meaning and impact of Christmas.
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If
your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash.
Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It
may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show
your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for
rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an
owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on
a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions
with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in
the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you
see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call
Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal,
be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react;
if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise,
Animal Control is your best and safest option.
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION
(Formerly called Harris County Animal Control)
The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals
found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost
your pet, please check this website, www.hcphes.org/vph.
HAVE YOU LOST A PET?
Start your search immediately, don’t wait to make flyers.
Contact all possible animal control or animal welfare agencies in
the area. Visit each location at least every other day.
Call your pet’s veterinarian and the microchip company to make
sure they have current contact information for you. A citizen may try
to call the veterinarian’s office or microchip company themselves
from your pet’s tags.
Call all the veterinarians in your area to alert them to the description
of your lost pet in case someone brings it to their clinic.
Check with your neighbors, especially families with children and
ask if they’ve seen a pet that looks like yours.
Search your neighborhood on foot, your pet maybe be nearby but
is injured and unable to get back home.
Leave a towel or article of clothing with your scent on it outside of
your home. Your pet may be disorientated and will be attracted
by your scent.
HAVE YOU FOUND A PET?
First, think of the animal as lost and not abandoned and make every
effort to reunite the animal to an owner.
Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone and report the animal
as found.
Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or check with a local
veterinarian to scan the animal for a microchip.
Return to the place where you found the animal and put up a found
pet poster near that location.
If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper or website posting,
ask them to provide a picture of the animal and meet in a public
place like a police station.
Community Newsletter | December 2017
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT MICROCHIPS
& MICROCHIP COMPANIES
A microchip is a small device (size of a grain of rice) that is permanent
and implanted with a needle under the skin of pets.
Pets do not have to be given any pain medication or anesthesia to
implant a microchip.
Microchips are not likely to move or need repair if implanted correctly.
Microchips, when scanned, show a unique code. The microchip
must be registered with the corresponding microchip manufacture
to record any owner and animal data.
Microchips do not work like GPS locators or LoJack and cannot give
a signal to find the location of your lost pet.
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents.
While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many
children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could
result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal
Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint
while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas.
The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor
or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to
become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following
circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in
length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable
of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does
not have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you
work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for
all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only
protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but
also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly
sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. For a complete
list of regulations, call 281-999-3191 or visit www.hcphes.org/vph.
HOLIDAY PET SAFETY TIPS
The holiday season is upon us and many pet parents plan to include
their furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for
the holidays, it is important to try to keep your pet’s eating and
exercise habits as close to their normal routine as possible. Also,
please be sure to steer pets clear of the following unhealthy treats,
toxic plants and dangerous decorations.
BE CAREFUL WITH SEASONAL PLANTS AND DECORATIONS
• Oh, Christmas Tree: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it
doesn’t tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. This will
also prevent the tree water - which may contain fertilizers that can
cause stomach upset - from spilling. Stagnant tree water is a breeding
ground for bacteria and your pet could end up with nausea or
diarrhea should he imbibe.
• Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to
suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal
upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties
of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-asjolly
artificial plants made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe
bouquet.
• Tinsel-less Town: Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching “toy”
that’s easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a nibble
can lead to a swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive
tract, severe vomiting, dehydration and possible surgery. It’s best
to brighten your boughs with something other than tinsel.
• That Holiday Glow: Don’t leave lighted candles unattended. Pets
may burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock candles over. Be
sure to use appropriate candle holders, placed on a stable surface.
And if you leave the room, put the candle out!
• Wired Up: Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments
out of paws’ reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical
shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and
esophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your
pet’s mouth and digestive tract.
AVOID HOLIDAY FOOD DANGERS
• Skip the Sweets: By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate
and anything sweetened with xylitol, but do you know the lengths to
which an enterprising pet will go to chomp on something yummy? Make
sure to keep your pets away from the table and unattended plates of
food, and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans.
• Leave the Leftovers: Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as
bones, should not be fed to your furry friends. Pets can join the festivities
in other fun ways that won’t lead to costly medical bills.
• Careful with Cocktails: If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages,
be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets
cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, ill and may
even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.
• Selecting Special Treats: Looking to stuff your pet’s stockings? Stick
with chew toys that are basically indestructible, Kongs that can be
stuffed with healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be
safely digestible. Long, stringy things are a feline’s dream, but the most
risky toys for cats involve ribbon, yarn and loose little parts that can
get stuck in the intestines, often necessitating surgery. Surprise kitty
with a new ball that’s too big to swallow, a stuffed catnip toy or the
interactive cat dancer.
Plan a Pet-Safe Holiday Gathering
• House Rules: If your animal-loving guests would like to give your
pets a little extra attention and exercise while you’re busy tending to
the party, ask them to feel free to start a nice play or petting session.
• Put the Meds Away: Make sure all of your medications are locked behind
secure doors, and be sure to tell your guests to keep their meds
zipped up and packed away, too.
• A Room of Their Own: Give your pet his own quiet space to retreat
to—complete with fresh water and a place to snuggle. Shy pups and
cats might want to hide out under a piece of furniture, in their carrying
case or in a separate room away from the hubbub.
• New Year’s Noise: As you count down to the new year, please keep in
mind that strings of thrown confetti can get lodged in a cat’s intestines,
if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers can terrify
pets and cause possible damage to sensitive ears. And remember that
many pets are also scared of fireworks, so be sure to secure them in a
safe, escape-proof area as midnight approaches.
Family
Focus
Family Roster
Mom: Romni, Director of Logistics (Chateau Domingue)
Dad: Blake, Grind Division Manager (Oerlikon)
Son: Kaidryn, 9 YO: Black Belt TKD (Tiger Rock Martial
Arts of Katy), World Medalist/Titlist; Also enjoys
modeling, singing, and acting
Christmaaaaas
Favorite Family Traditions: Annual Christmas Caroling Party
through the neighborhoods (what a fun way to dive back
into days of yore!), Dickens on the Strand in Galveston,
cooking for family and friends every year (especially
making decorated chocolate dipped marshmallows and
other chocolate goodies), baking cookies for Santa, and
toy donations for children. Oh, and lest we forget their
beloved visit with Santa at Bass Pro Shop! He always makes
sure to stock up on reindeer food while he’s there!
Funniest Christmas Memory: “One year we were headed to Dickens on the strand and we found out a
cold front was coming into town. I spent the entire evening in our hotel sewing furry capes so the family
would not freeze. It was 27 degrees that year. Because of all the fur, our hotel room looked like a wild
animal was turned loose in there and shed its winter coat.”
Shopping Logistics: This smart mama pays extra on the family bills all year so that at Christmas time, she’s
sitting on a nice credit to use towards presents, festivities and feasts. School book drives and other similar
events are opportune times for Romni to stash away a collection of unique gifts to tuck under their tree.
The Reason for the Season: Christmas time is so special for this family since it brings their families and
friends together, especially by enjoying a number of dinner parties throughout the season.
Auld Lang Syne: “On New Year’s Eve, we usually throw a big party - everyone and the kids are welcome.
We eat and pop fireworks!”
Locale
Morton Ranch - On why they like living there: “We
love the small town feel of Katy but just close enough
to the culture of the big city with all the Museums
30 min away and a beach only 1 hour away. My
husband and I both grew up in Houston/Katy and
the surrounding areas. I am an MCHS Alumni class of
love our community and people in it.”
Holiday Safety Tips
The holidays are an exciting time of year for kids and
to help ensure they have a safe and happy holiday
season, here are some safety and mental health tips
from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS
Trees
• When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the
label “Fire Resistant.”
• When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness.
A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from
branches and needles do not break when bent
between your fingers. The trunk butt of a fresh
tree is sticky with resin and when tapped on the
ground, the tree should not lose many needles.
• When setting up a tree at home, place it away
from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters.
Place the tree out of the way of traffic and do not
block doorways.
• Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to
expose the fresh wood. This allows for better
water absorption and will help keep your tree from
drying out and becoming a fire hazard.
• Be sure to keep the stand filled with water, because
heated rooms can dry live trees out rapidly.
Lights
• Check all tree lights - even if you have just
purchased them - before hanging them on your
tree. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there
are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose
connections.
• Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The
tree can become charged with electricity from
faulty lights and a person touching a branch could
be electrocuted.
• Some light strands may contain lead in the bulb
sockets and wire coating, sometimes in high
amounts. Make sure your lights are out of reach of
young children who might try to put lights in their
mouths and wash your hands after handling them.
• Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be
sure they have been certified for outdoor use. To
hold lights in place, string them through hooks or
insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull or
tug lights to remove them.
• Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits
with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid
potential shocks.
• Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the
house. The lights could short out and start a fire.
• Lights and candles are fire hazards. If you use
Community Newsletter | December 2017
electric lights, look for frayed or exposed wires and
make sure no wires are pinched by furniture and
no cords run under rugs.
• Don’t use the same extension cord for more than
three strands of lights and turn off all lights before
going to bed.
• When lighting candles, remove flammable
materials from the area and never leave a burning
candle unattended.
• Space heaters are involved in 79% of fatal home
heating fires. If space heaters are in use, there
should be a 3-foot open zone - make sure they are
not close to curtains, blankets or other potentially
flammable materials. Always turn off and unplug
when unattended.
Decorations
• Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant
materials to trim a tree. Choose tinsel or artificial
icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals.
• Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other
evergreens. Always use non-flammable holders and
place candles where they will not be knocked over.
• In homes with small children, take special care
to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable.
• Keep trimmings with small removable parts
out of the reach of children to prevent them
from swallowing or inhaling small pieces. Avoid
trimmings that resemble candy or food that may
tempt a young child to eat them.
• Wear gloves to avoid eye and skin irritation
while decorating with spun glass “angel hair.”
Follow container directions carefully to avoid lung
irritation while decorating with artificial snow
sprays.
• Remove all wrapping papers, bags, paper, ribbons
and bows from tree and fireplace areas after gifts
are opened. These items can pose suffocation and
choking hazards to a small child or can cause a fire
if near flame.
• Keep potentially poisonous holiday plant
decorations, including mistletoe berries, Jerusalem
cherry and holly berry, away from children.
Toy Safety
• Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills and
interest level of the intended child. Toys too
advanced may pose safety hazards for younger
children.
• Before buying a toy or allowing your child to play
with a toy that he has received as a gift, read the
instructions carefully.
• To prevent both burns and electrical shocks, do
not give young children (under age 10) a toy that
must be plugged into an electrical outlet. Instead,
buy toys that are battery-operated.
• Young children can choke on small parts contained
in toys or games. Government regulations specify
that toys for children under age three cannot have
parts less than 1 1/4 inches in diameter and 2 1/4
inches long.
• Children can have serious stomach and intestinal
problems - including death - after swallowing
button batteries or magnets. In addition to toys,
button batteries are often found in musical
greeting cards, remote controls, hearing aids and
other small electronics. Small, powerful magnets
are present in many homes as part of building toy
sets. Keep button batteries and magnets away
from young children and call your health care
provider immediately if your child swallows one.
• Children can choke or suffocate on uninflated or
broken balloons. Do not allow children under age
8 to play with them.
• Remove tags, strings and ribbons from toys
before giving them to young children.
• Watch for pull toys with strings that are more than
12 inches in length. They could be a strangulation
hazard for babies.
• Parents should store toys in a designated location,
such as on a shelf or in a toy box and keep older
kids’ toys away from young children. Use a toy box
with no lid or a lightweight, non-locking lid and
ventilation holes.
Food Safety
• Bacteria are often present in raw foods. Fully
cook meats and poultry and thoroughly wash raw
vegetables and fruits.
• Keep hot liquids and food away from the edges
of counters and tables, where they can be easily
knocked over by a young child’s exploring hands.
Be sure that young children cannot access
microwave ovens.
• Wash your hands frequently and make sure
children do the same.
• Never put a spoon used to taste food back into
food without washing it.
• Always keep raw foods and cooked foods separate
and use separate utensils when preparing them.
• Always thaw meat in the refrigerator, never on the
countertop.
• Foods that require refrigeration should never be
left at room temperature for more than two hours.
Happy Visiting
• Clean up immediately after a holiday party. A
toddler could rise early and choke on leftover food
or come in contact with alcohol or tobacco.
• Remember that the homes you visit may not be
childproofed. Keep an eye out for danger spots like
unlocked cabinets, unattended purses, accessible
cleaning or laundry products, stairways or hot radiators.
• Keep a list with all of the important phone
numbers you or a babysitter are likely to need in
case of an emergency. Include the police and fire
department, your pediatrician and the national
Poison Help Line, 1-800-222-1222. Laminating the
list will prevent it from being torn or damaged by
accidental spills.
• Always make sure your child rides in an
appropriate car safety seat, booster seat or seat
belt. In cold weather, children in car safety seats
should wear thin layers with a blanket over the
top of the harness straps if needed, not a thick
coat or snowsuit. See www.healthychildren.org/
carseatguide for more information.
• Adults should buckle up too and drivers should
never be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Traveling, visiting family members, getting
presents, shopping, etc., can all increase your
child’s stress levels. Trying to stick to your child’s
usual routines, including sleep schedules and
timing of naps, can help you and your child enjoy
the holidays and reduce stress.
Fireplaces
• Before lighting any fire, remove all greens, boughs,
papers and other decorations from fireplace area.
Check to see that the flue is open.
• Use care with “fire salts,” which produce
colored flames when thrown on wood fires. They
contain heavy metals that can cause intense
gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting if eaten.
Keep them away from children.
• Do not burn gift wrap paper in the fireplace. A
flash fire may result as wrappings ignite suddenly
and burn intensely.
• If a glass-fronted gas fireplace is used, keep
children and others well away from it with a screen
or gate. The glass doors can get hot enough to
cause serious burns and stay hot long after the fire
is out.
