This yearbook is our greatest collection of mem ories th a t w e hope you 1cherish forever. We tried to
encom pass all th e activities as w e ll as daily routines in order that you may never forget one of, if not
the. best year of your lives.
I w ould th in k it's safe to say th a t w e had no idea w h a t w e w ere getting into w hen w e volunteered to
be co-editors of the yearbook. But it w as w o rth it! — Even though w e did eat, sleep, and breathe it for
the last little w h ile prior to publication. This could best be exem plified by an incident th a t occured one
night w h ile th e yearbook staff w as on th e ir w ay out to dinner to take some tim e o ff from our backbreaking
labour! S itting on the 23 bus, w e w ere stoned, and S haun's firs t reaction w as "If w e get killed
there w o n 't be any yearbook!" Thanks fo r your concern!
S eriously,though, w e had a lot of sweat, tears, laughs, jokes and fu n putting th is together.
However, it never w ould have happened w ith o u t the faith, loyalty, hard w ork and devotion of some
very special and talented people. Darryl — our talented lay-out editor as w e ll everything-else
person,w ho w as m ore like an assistant editor. You've been amazing! Your diligence and devotion
could NOT have been replaced. Judy — your endless hours of typing for us made you irreplacable. You
have been invaluable to us. Jason — w e 're indebted to you tw o-fold. You've put up w ith us
congregating in your room 'til the w ee hours of the m orning. As w ell, the job that you undertook in
raising m oney through advertising really lightened th e financial burden of putting together a
yearbook. M uch thanks m ust also be extended to your advertising counterpart Howie. Your fluency in
hebrew as w e ll as your coercion skills have helped bring in those much needed ads. W e thank you both

A Nightmare Journey into Hell
The area in fro n t of the EI-AI check-in counter w as packed. A sm all table was set up in an
inconspicuous corner w ith a sm all sign declaring "H ebrew U niversity — One Year P rogram " as its
title. A fe w parents m illed around here and there, tripping on duffel bags and back-packs, w o rry and
sorrow w ritte n all over th e ir faces. W hat seemed like an enclave of college kids, or post college kids or
soon to be college kids, surrounded the bags. Echoes of "H i! A re you on th e One Year Program ?" could
be heard from every angle. It w as a toast-m aster's w orst nightm are. New people w ould join the throng,
anxious about w here to go, w h o to speak to, w here to sign up, and, most im portantly, w h e re to get the
shekel rebate that the travel agency had prom ised. "C ould you ju s t w atch my stu ff for one second?",
asked one girl to her neighbour in line. She disappeared in to th e crow d in search of a bathroom , maybe
never to be seen again In a ba lagan th a t big it's hard to find the flo o r let alone the closest pee place. A ll
around people w ere supposedly lining up to check in, feverishly putting on luggage tags and sizing up
the q u a n tity of s tu ff everyone else had brought. "D oes anyone know our address over there?", came a
plaintive cry from the corner, "o r should w e put our address at hom e on these things?" The guy in the
Zebes shirt sauntered over to the girl in Tridelt boxers, "W h e re are you fro m ? " he asked w ith a slick
sm ile. "U h — oh, w e haven't even taken off yet and the kosher meat m arket has begun", moaned
someone else. The bathroom girl returned from w h a t looked like a successful mission ju s t in tim e to
realise th a t she had forgotten ju st w h o she had asked to w atch her stuff, and w a s n 't it funny that
everyone else had those same gray-green arm y duffel bags? An announcem ent came over the
intercom m uffled beyond perception, im m ediately putting everyone in a panic. A fte ra fu lld a y 's fly in g ,
and catching connecting flig h ts no one w as in that great of a mood. Bleary eyed and fuzzy faced, hot,
sweaty, and feeling nauseous, only the beautiful made good firs t im pressions. Of all surprises th a t we
w ere to encounter during our firs t week in Israel, the group flig h t started the year out w ith a bang.
Slow er than slo w check in, random security checks (an orientation th a t began and ended before the
w h o le group had finished), hum id ity th a t made faces m elt onto the floor, and disorganisation th a t can
only be appreciated in retrospect; such features w ere sim ply added bonuses in w h a t can only be called
"a day from h e ll". Long lost camp people show ed up, 9 scream s of "O h my G -d " could be heard all
over, and people never to be seen since helped move your bag. A fte r successfully checking us through,
orientating us w ith such w o n derful advice as "N o means m aybe" and "D o n 't forget to speak H ebrew ",
and dism issing tearyeyed parental units, "o u r leaders" pushed u sth ro u g h three more security checks
and herded us aboard EI-AI's Boeing 747. "G re a t" som eone thought aloud and turned to the person
next to him "H o w m uch did w e pay fo r th is flig h t? "
M idw ay through th e trip, 4 or 5 hours into the journey, someone else cracked open a bottle of Jack
Daniels. By th is tim e, you see, w e w e re already a society — a grant "group flig h t c liq u e " bound
together like all victim s of the same tra u m a tic event. Kind of like buddies borne of the battlefield but...
w ell...better. W e knew each others names, w here w e came from , and w h a t school w e attended, we
had all played Jew ish Geography w ith trem endous zeal, and w e w ere all headed fo r the same place:
Givat Ram. We joked and laughed and w atched the ZBT snuggle w ith the DG (the Tridelt w as already
seeing a Sammie) and hit each other on the back like old buddies. W ho cared that half the people we
w ere sittin g w ith w e d id n 't like? W ho knew?
The flig h t lasted forever, it seemed, and w hen w e fin a lly clim bed back into our original seats (come
now, you expected 1 50 college kids to sit still fo r hours especially w hen there's booze on board?) in
preparation fo r our fin a l descent, w e w ere buzzed from excitem ent and fatigue. The jet lag had yet to
hit, but we knew it w as there som ew here, ju s t haunting us. As w e touched dow n a splatter of applause
broke out and frightened faces turned into hesitant smiles. "H ey! W e're h e re ," the bathroom girl said
to her new room m ate and her rem em bered luggage w atcher. W e stepped off the stairs and in to th e
bus, and in the w ords of som e im m ortal w rite r, "The adventure began..."

GIVAT RAM
Looking back on our firs t sight of G ivat Ram (affectionately known as Givat Nam, Givat Scum, and
Shikuneh hakelev), w ho w o u ld have know n about all the ,'fu n " th a t aw aited us! A fte r being given that
5 m inute nightm arish decision of w ho to room w ith , w e proceeded w ith anticipation to get our keys
and find our w ay to w h a t w e w o u ld — or w ere supposed to — th in k of as "h o m e " for the next 7 weeks.
Home? I don't rem em ber having to w ade through puddles at home at the ung-dly hour of 7:00a.m . to
th e "g o o d " stall (the only one w ith a show er head) fo r the inevitable ice-cold show er (w hich, in my
early m orning num bness, never ceased to shock me). The lesson w as quickly learned: a 3:00 in the
afternoon show er w as your best bet, th a t is it w as sim ple to learn for those w ho got up before Ulpan
class w as over. For those th a t actually did get to class on tim e, w e thought w e w ere real troopers
getting into the Israel spirit. How else could th e 7:30 a.m. crush to g e to n to th e 28 aleph be explained?
W as it ju st the excitem ent and " fu n " of studying Hebrew fo r the next — Ugh — 5 hours? Oh, and w h a t
fu n w e had w ith the phones! W aiting in line w hen only 2 out of the 10 phones on cam pus worked. If
they w ere all busy, and you w ere so desperate to call home, you could alw ays make th e 3 m ile trek
across cam pus to those outside th e gate — or you could w a it 'til to m o rro w (a better choice). A nd w a sn 't
th a t shil-sh u l "fu n "? The one th a t no m atter w h a t you did lasted all through Ulpan. A nd being taught
Hebrew — in Hebrew by a teacher younger than me, making me feel like a fool — that w as "fu n ". As
w ere th e cockroaches w h ic h w ere enough to make us w a n t to take the firs t plane home. But, despite
the cockroaches, th e shil-shul, the trek across cam pus (only w h e n absolutely necessary), and the hell
rides to M ount Scopus every day w e made it, we survived, and now w e can thank G-d it's over!

THE BIG MOVE
Septem ber 5th, 6th, and 7th, 1988 w ere d e finitely days th a t all of us w ill cherish. S hikunei HaElef
had been our hom e fo r 2 m onths. A hom e w ith good company, including cats, mice, cold w ater, loud
noise, and excellent m adrichim . Ulpan w as w in d in g dow n and all of us needed to move. The buses
arrived and all of the luggage crow ded th e various hallw ays. Some of us w ere assigned Resnick, w h ile
others chose Idelson. W hatever our destination, we had som ething in common. Our 2 m onths in hell
had come to an end. We shared the grow ing excitem ent of moving onto M ount S copusfo rth e next 10
m onths. We anticipated the close w alks to class, hot w ater, cleaner and more modern quarters, and
th e end of Ulpan. We said "goodbye " to th e 28 aleph, and "h e llo " to the 4 , 4aleph, 9, and 28. The move
w as hectic, but d e fin ite ly w o rth the hassle. I rem em ber locking m yself out of my room after having
already tu rned in my key. Breaking th e w in d o w w ith my hand to get the shirt I left behind is how I made
my mark on S hikunei HaElef. H ow about you?

End of Summer Ulpan: Party and Talent Show
A fte r 9 and a half w eeks of straining our brains trying to learn Hebrew, it w as tim e for a party!
Thanks to our m adrichim , a ta le n t show an end of the sum m er ulpan party w as organised at Givat Ram
Hundreds of Overseas Students w atched the talent show fe aturing: singing solos, guitar players,
dram atic im provisations, and stickm an Dave — the only man w ho plays his "s tic k " in public. Six prizes
w ere awarded to the contestants, including dinners fo r tw o at various restaurants on Ben Yehuda. A t
the conclusion of th e ta le n t show , th e party began. W e danced and partied all night long to the great
tunes played by the Israeli DJs. It w as a great w ay to celebrate the end of our Ulpan experience, in
w h ich w e struggled w ith the aleph - bet. It also put an end to our daily fig h t fo r seats on the various 28
aleph buses th a t took us on th e long haul from S hikunei HaElef to M ount Scopus. Some of us overslept
fo llo w in g the Ulpan Party and Talent Show, but others did m anage to get to class bright and early the
next day.

DORM LIFE

In early Septem ber, the Overseas Program moved from the trenches of Givat-Ram to the relative
luxury of M o u n t Scopus. W e had the pleasure of m oving into B uilding 6. W ow , a sink, a m irror, and if
you w anted to you could spin around w ith o u t h ittin g a bed. Life w as set. Of th e ten rooms on o u rflo o r,
three w ere Israeli, tw o w ere Canadian, tw o w ere C alifornian (surfing rules, hang loose dude), and one
room contained our Spanish continge nt (we are ja m m in ' w ith a Spanish accent is the true w ay to sing
it), and finally, one room w ith an Am erican and an Israeli (the horror, th e horror to quote Conrad). A t
once, w e all realised th a t our floor w as unique in th a t m ost of us never slept and th a t th e ground floor
of B uilding 6 w as th e m ost happening M oadon on cam pus. The difference betw een us and our
counterparts w as th a t w e never closed. The m ost com m on hour to be aw ake seemed to be 3 a.m., so
w e com piled a list of th in g s to do at th is ungodly hour:

One Day You'll Look Back On This And You'll Laugh:

Everything started w h e n an odd but, alas, too fa m ilia r noise pulled you out of the best dream you've
had since you got to Jerusalem several m onths ago. You w ere having a Ben and Jerry's ice cream that ״
^fo llow ed a plate of french frie s drow ned in "M cD o n a ld 's real A m erican ke tchup" that you ate right
Rafter a D om ino's pepperoni pizza, together w ith an a rtificia l, chem ically infested, glo w -in -th e -d a rk Big
flG ulp (or ju st a fish and chips if you're English, or a Braai if you're South African). You quickly get back
y to reality and realise that the odd noise w as nothing else but the "h a ll-k e e p e r" supposedly sweeping
rth e floor, but really knocking the broom on your door w h ile singing in a language you didn't
^understand.
It's 7 a.m. Your firs t class is at 2:30 p.m. and you really w a n t to go back to sleep. But the diva in the
hall has decided otherw ise. She w o n 't stop singing. So you thought you m ight settle fo ra hot shower,
but you haven't gotten hot w a te r in the m orning for the last 3 m onths so you quickly forget about it.
Of course, you also th o u g h t of asking the e n tertainer w ith a nice sm ile to stop singing, but she
doesn't understand any English, Hebrew, French, or Spanish andyou w e re n 'tta u g h t A rabic in school.
So you drag yourself to the kitchen, w here the sm ell of Turkish coffee makes you w a n t to th ro w up,
open th e fridge and find your bottle of m ilk has been em ptied. Coffee w ill be black this m orning —
again. But, you can alw ays borrow some of your fridge-m ate's cheese, know ing that you w o u ld n 't
have done so if your m ilk hadn't disappeared.
The loud lady left your floor so you take the opportunity to go back to sleep, and w hen you wake up,
you eventually go to class.
You come back in the evening w ith a bag fu ll of G oldsm ith's to ile t paper. You cook the daily pasta
w ith the daily im provised tom ato sauce. You socialise w ith one hall-m ate, w ho in a desperate need to
talk to someone, left his door open. You th ro w a chair at your room m ate's face during a slight
disagreem ent about w h ich m usic to play. You w atch people going dow n the hall w ith to ile t paper in
th e ir hands and you dream about the day you'll be able to go to the toilets being able to sit on the pot. In
short, the usual boring evening. W/l/l/l/l/l/t/l/l/l/t/f/'''
Then you m ight go to the library to get some late n ig h tw o rk done, but most probably you'll g oto the
Moadon, or visit some friends, or hear about the latest Resnick rape. W hen you fin a lly get back to your
room, you fin d that your room m ate is not alone, and the expression on his face tells you that he w ants
you out of there im m ediately. Y ou're homeless! Under the m oonlight, overlooking the Old City, you
think about tom orrow m orning's concerto, realizing you'll be lucky to be in bed at 7 a.m. to hear it. One
day you'll look back on th is and laugh.

The tim e has come. You ca n 't put it off any longer; the phone calls m ust be made. You haven't
spoken to your cousins in tw o m onths, your parents in six weeks, plus friends of the fam ily are here
and if you w a n t th a t free meal you have to call them .
The decision is made to dedicate the evening's activities to phone calls. Arm ed w ith phone
num bers and at least tw e n ty asim onim you trudge to building five at nine o'clock. However, the line
has tripled in size since th e last tim e you checked. Also, half of the phones a re n 't w orking and should
your tw e n ty asim onim drop w ith in the firs t m inute the m achine isn 't w orking anyway, as usual. AGH I
Should you stay or take the chance and go to Goldsm ith.
Y ou're feeling daring — w h a t's the point of making phone calls the evening peulah if you don't take
some chances ? O nw ard to Goldsm ith. Yet everyone seems to have the same idea. By now it's 9:15,
G oldsm ith closes at 1 0 :0 0 ‏—־ w ill you make it?
Finally you get the phone; your cousins a re n 't home and w hen you start a decent conversation w ith
fa m ily friends the people in the line start to give you dirty looks fo r m onopolising the phone. A t least
you get the free meal.
A t 9:45, you em erge triu m p h a n t feeling quite accom plished but th e re 's still the call to your parents.
Twelve o'clock arrives and dragging an u n w illin g friend you make the trek to the Hyatt.
You slink past the reception desk in that obvious college sw eatshirt. Upon reaching the phones, it's
a tense situation. Three people in line and tw o of the phones are broken. You're not in the mood — but
w a it, w h a t about the phone dow nstairs.
This is d e fin ite ly your night — no one is there only you and the bezek. Your asim on is safe in the
aperture and your parents accent the charges.
By one o'clock your pockets are stuffed w ith Hyatt bathroom tissues. You leave satisfied w ith the
phone call adventure fo r yet another m onth. By the w ay did you know about the new phone in moadon

W ith th e precision of a m ilita ry operation, your stom ach starts rum bling, your hands get clammy,

alm ost overw helm ing. 7:00 p.m. As if by magic, the doors open. The sm ell of schnitzel w afts through
the corridors, w ith the subtlety of store bought perfum e. You roughly th ru st your 3 shekels across the
counter for a schnitzel. Nirvana achieved! M ission accom plished! Your craving has been fu lfille d . Your
only fear is T m inus 30 to m orrow

The Suntanning Quad
For most illu strio u s students of the m echina, acquiring a deep, dark, Rio de Janeiro tan is a top
priority. These students som etim es tend to be in the category of the non-drinkers and the nonsm
okers. Usually th e ir basic, BS and unoriginal excuses are: "b u t it's bad fo ry o u r health ",y e t they sit
there and nuke th e ir skin under the sun fo r an hour a day! The more fu n ky party anim als, basically
com ing from the U.S., like to engage them selves in a more thought-provoking and intellectual sport of
"shesh besh", com m only called backgam m on. This b rillia n tly m astered game by all PA's (that's Party
A nim als for you non-everything people reading th is article) brings out th e ir knowledge in
com prehending and calculating the ancient Chinese secret of rolling the dice. Then there are those
gnarly OYP (One Year Party) freaks w ho d o n 't like to undertake thought-provoking games, therefore
they take part in an absurd and ridiculous game of fetching an aerodynam ic plastic plate fo r tw o hours.
Of course, if getting h it on the head w ith a flying disk isn't to yourfancy, then you m ig h ttry m editating
on the law n ju s t long enough to be blasted into the 22nd century by a spherical, black and w h ite
cannon ball being kicked around by gold-flaunting, open shirted, hairy chested "chach-chachs".
A t night, the quad transform s into a com m onplace fo r South A m erican melody makers. Playing 3
songs over and over again seems to be a ritual w here they come from , I guess. Som etim es, it perturbs
me to th in k that they only know 3 or 4 songs, so I contem plate w h e th e r to teach them a new song or
tw o. I mean, you know me, com ing from l_A and everything I could teach them a little about BM W
(that's Bob M arley and the W ailers, fo r you non-everything people, again). But, then I th in k to myself,
w h y ruin an annoying tradition I mean, life in Resnick ju st w o u ld n 't be the same w ith o u t these 3 a.m.
concertos. That ju s t about sum s up one of the many affluent sectors of the Resnick dorm itorial
com m unity.

The Parent's Tour
Like the Jew s of the Exodus during W orld W ar II, these people flocked to Israel in search of the Holy
Land and, perhaps, th e ir offspring. As Noah w o u ld have it, these Jew s descended off the EL AL arc
b u ilt for the skies — m ost of them in tw osies. Their jo u rn e y w o u ld take them to the Hyatt hotel f t our
m ortal im age of Heaven above — w h e re they w o u ld fin d th e ir poor, starving college students anxiously
aw aiting th e ir arrival and th e ir pocketbooks.
The m ission of these parents w o u ld be to see as m uch of Israel as possible in 10 days, feed th e ir
loved ones, and to stay fa r aw ay from the roach infested, oversized w a lk-in closets th e ir kin are forced
to inhabit. To th e good fo rtu n e of the students, th e ir parents w ere given each night o ff from th e ir
rigorous day of touring, only to invade the best possible dining establishm ents in Jerusalem . To a *k
young, am bitious student, like myself, alw ays lo o kin g fo r w ays to exploit the weaknesses ofthose w ho
have provided fo r me fo r 21 years, these tw o weeks w ere heaven on earth. W ho am I to disappoint my 3Tj.
father w h e n he insists on eating w e ll on HIS vacation. HIS vacation, huh? W ho is he kidding?
The "parent to u r" allow ed the parental units to seethe Holy Land, reaquaint them selves w ith th e ir
children, and meet other parents w h o could em pathize w ith the pain and agony of not seeing th e ir
children's bright, shining faces for an entire year.
Before I conclude, I m ust make an author's note and address the hospitality of the Hyatt hotel. For if
it w e re n 't fo r these overseas parents, the hotel w ould have been renovated and turned into
Jerusalem 's firs t bow ling alley w ith 2 5 0 lanes to choose from .

If you're like me and don't appreciate those long m akolet lines, the hike up to Supersol or the zoo
atm osphere in M achane Yehuda, the Hebrew U niversity is the place fo ryou. Scattered w ith a num ber
of fin e eating establishm ents, Hebrew U niversity's snack bar, cafeterias and restaurants w ill satisfy
the heartiest appetite.
The m orning is the hardest tim e of day. But not to fear, G oldsm ith's eat and run snack bar w ill get
you off to a golden day. O ffering one of Israel's fin e st selections of danishes, w ith a huge assortm ent of
yoghurts, artics, fru it drinks and cheese toasts, G oldsm ith snack bar w ill put the colour into your
drabby m orning of Hebrew.
Lunchtim e, th e heat of the day , and the hunger sets in once again. There are four fu lly equipped
cafeterias on cam pus, Veggie, th e one next to th e library, Education and the Famous Frank Sinatra.
Located ju s t o ff Nancy Reagan Square, Franks is th e place to be. A ttra ctin g all of OYP and M echina's
je t setters w h o have a taste for good food and good company, all th is fo r only a measly 5.90 shekel. It's
w ell w orth it.
It's been a long hard day and the last th in g th a t's on your m ind is w a itin g in line to use the trickle of
gas your stove has to offer. The thing to do is get all your left over change together to raise 3 shekels.
Then make your w ay over to one of the tw o moadons in Resnick. For 3 shekels you can purchase a
schnitzel w ith your choice of salads. But it doesn't stop at schnitzel, you have the choice of basically
anything th a t can fit into a pita. From eggs all the w ay to falafel.
You can get three square meals a day, fo r the low price of 12 shekels. If it's food you desire, Hebrew
U niversity can supply your every need.

DINING OUT
It is a Thursday afternoon, you have ju s t fin ish e d your last class. You k n o w th a t in the m orning you
are going to Haifa fo r the w eekend, so you have no food for dinner. You make plans w ith som efriends
to m eet at th e bus stop at 8 o'clock to go out fo r dinner. A t 8:30 you get into tow n, look at each other and
ask the question every OYPer asks — W here do you w a n t to go fo r dinner? In A ugust the choices
seemed endless; O ff the Square (Dairy or Meat), Primos, Yem enite Step, A lum a, Tea and Pie, etc. By
A pril, the choices have narrow ed dow n due to lack of funds and the realisation th a t every restaurant in
th e city serves the sam e dishes. Since very fe w people can afford m eat dishes, your choices are
narrow ed dow n to Primos, O ff the Square, or A lum a. I have spent m any a Thursday night at Primos
debating over m allaw ach w ith m ushroom s or m allaw ach w ith olives and cheese. O f course, w e all
m ust make the ultim ate decision of paying 25 agorot for a roll w ith garlic butter or being extrem ely
cheap and forgoing the roll claim ing th a t at O ff the Square rolls and salad are included w ith the meal.

H ow w as last night? W here did you go? -The Underground, The Tavern, Champs? Jerusalem
n ig h tlife bow ls me over once again. It's not ju s t the variety of places th a t astounds you — but the
people th a t you can so easily become acquainted w ith in them -yes, you guessed it, those delicious’
chach-chacs. How can they be described? A fe w adjectives th a t spring th e m ind may be handsome,
w itty , aloof, sophisticated- but no! If these are th e w ords on your lips you m ust eith e r be deranged or so
drunk th a t your brain has tu rn e d to mush.
Falafels- w e've tasted them all- ye llo w ones, green ones, brow n ones. W e're not quite sure
w h e th e r its the ingredients th a t make them th is colour. On closer inspection,-it seems m ore likely to be
th e 'h a n d s of man serving these delicious treats w h ic h colour th e falafels so pleasantly.
A n o th e r popular student haunt is "C heesecake". However, the size of the ow ner alw ays serves as .

The cinem a can be described as an e x p e rie n ce E E s in the w a tching of the film th a t w e enjoy, or \
listening to the Israelis? In England people tend to w h isper in the cinem a, and it is ever quite usual to
w a tch the film — but no Israelis have found a new form of film w atching. This consists of talking
contin u a lly thro u g h o u t the film and fu ll critism of w h a t's going on, and a general getting up and
w andering around a n y tim e you feel like it. Yes, I really enjoy having to stand up every five m inutes so
th a t som eone can get by. But alw ays at the most crucial m om ent up come th e lights, and our rush 200
Israelis fo r th e interval.
Transportation in Jerusalem — it s till amazes me how consistently good natured and happy the bus
drivers in Jerusalem are. They are alw ays so w illin g to hand over a red bus card — and seem oblivious
to th e fact th a t half the students at the Hebrew U niversity are 17 years old. But nothing beats a
Jerusalem taxi — th e taxi drivers head on collisions. W hat is the most com forting is the w ay that they
1 enjoy tu rn in g around w h ile driving and having a conversation w ith those backseat passengers, it
' makes you feel really safe. *.
But d e fin ite ly the best part of Jerusalem n ig h tlife is com ing hom e to bed.

TRANSPORTATION
The night is young. The air is brisk. The bus stop is crowded. Like a trader on the stock exchange,
you are barraged w ith num bers. So many num bers: 26, 4 aleph, 28, 23 aleph, 23 bet, 23 gim el, 23
daled... yet the 9 bus is now here. You consider succum bing to the 4 aleph-Nope, too slow. The 23;
Nope, too dangerous. You w ait.
The night is m iddle-aged. The air — very cold. The bus stop drips icicles on unsuspecting Egged
passenger w anna-be's. They ju m p as each bus tu rn s left from the University. They sit w hen the 9 bus
is not found.
The night w ould be past its sexual prim e, if nights had them . Finally, as if answ ering unspoken
prayers, she comes — long, slender, beautiful. The doors open w ith a thum p. A fte r a squeeze w hich
w o u ld make British soccer fans feel like sardines, you make it into the foyer of the Egged Luxury Liner.
A frie n d gives you the sign and you face the man at the w heel and clear your throat. W ith cartis in
hand, you utter a single w ord — pa'am ayim . The travellers in the coach cease th e ir petty
conversations, adm iring your com m and of th e ir tongue.
By the tim e the bus passes the Hadassah and Hyatt stops, the night is “ over the h ill". Am erican
university sw e a tsh irts fill the aisles. You think for a second that you hear a w ord of Hebrew being
spoken in the bus — you are w rong. You are not in Israel now, you are in SUNY Bingham ton. Yet, still
you w a n t to speak Hebrew. Ulpan flashcards appear before your eyes. Foods, colours, n u m b e rs^- no,
not them . Songs begin to play in your ears — Shalosh Pinot — NO! So you say it in English — "Pardon
me sir, your Golane Bet-47 A utom atic A ssault Rifle is in my nostril — could you double check the
safety...Please."
The bus pushes on. So does the night. W hen the fa m ilia r sight and sm ells of the Ben Yehuda
d istrict are encountered, the shoving begins anew. The last bus leaves in 15 m inutes. Grab a brew.
The night is gone.

It's 11:45 p.m. on a given evening. You have ju st drank a fe w beers at Champs and eaten dessert at
Cheesecake. You are tired and begin w alking dow n Ben Yehuda to make your w ay to the num ber 9 bus
stop. As you w a lk to th e station, you see a mob of Overseas Students ju st as intoxicatea as you. You
feel hungry and decide to go to Richie's Pizza and mooch a free piece of pizza before they close the
shop. You w alk back to the bus stop and reach into your pocket to fin d your red student bus ticket for
those 17 and under. The buses pass, but none seem to be num ber 9. M eanw hile, more Overseas
Students arrive at the bus stop. You talk w ith friends w earing an assortm ent of college sw eat shirts. At
last, the num ber 9 bus approaches and you accom pany the other students onto the bus. The driver
punches all th e red tickets and closes th e door quickly before driving like a m aniac to M ount Scopus.
You get o ff at th e dorm s and go home. It's too bad the night had to end so soon. You dream about
to m orrow night w hen you w ill take the num ber 9 again. Maybe next year Egged w ill have a bus line at
1 2:15 a.m. only for Overseas Students, w ho are the only ones w ho ride the bus. Suddenly, your alarm
goes o ff and you prepare yourself for another day of class at Goldsm ith. But, your red bus ticket is w ith

Am erica in Israel, the Ellis fam ily.
That's right Gene, one gets a definite feel of North A m erican c u ltu re from th e food (a good 8 on my
scale) to the interesting discussions on w h a t's new back home in Chicago from everyone's
favourite oleh. I don't th in k you'll disagree w ith me on th is one w hen I give them a definite thum bs
up!

O ur next house is th a t of G uru Gil, th a t infam ous host w h o spun his w ay from being a successful

discuss over a fa irly good meal (as long as you insist you w ill eventually m arry a Jew , of course).
O verall I give it an 8 fo r a w o n derful evening.

SURVEY
You can't say one year party students a re n 't am bitious. A lthough m any sim ply hope to be law yers or
professors, some aspire to m uch more — "w o rld class eate r", "co n tro lle r of the w o rld ", "king of
A m e rica", and even a "ro c k -n roll־ sta r". Then, there's the guy from Chicago w h o ca n 't decide w h e th e r
to be a cantor or a bouncer. And, of course, the m an from Ham ilton w h o looks forw ard to a career as a
"food producer of pickled p roducts" (who could that be?). A ccording to our survey, the Cavern is the
best bar in Jerusalem , w ith Champs and th e Rock tra ilin g close behind — and Club 11 for the cheapest
beers. For lunch on cam pus "V e g g ie " got the most votes, w ith Frankie's a fe w behind (sorry, Rooster).
W hen w e asked w hich restaurant to go to w ith your parents, w e com piled a list of th e most expensive
restaurants in Jerusalem — M am m a M ia's, and O ff the Square topping the list. A nd the best places for
dessert w ere: D on't Pass me By, Cheese Cake, and Sefer ve Sefel. W hen it comes to boring classes,
alm ost every class offered th is year w as m entioned at least once, but Hebrew took firs t place. For most
interesting class, there w as a 3-w ay tie between Foreign Policy, A m erican — Soviet Rivalry, and
Holocaust. M edzini and M ankow itz took best professor, w h ile Israeli w as o verw helm ingly the w orst.
By far, the most popular th in g to cook in the dorm s w as pasta, follow ed by chicken and stir-fry. The cats
hanging outside the dorm s w ere also m entioned as a culinary delight. Em ily tied w ith the Hyatt fo r best
place to get a haircut (tim e to raise your prices, Emily!), although many advised against getting a
haircut in th is country at all. The best source of to ile t paper appropriation, w h ich m any of us have spent
m ost of the year researching, w as d e fin ite ly G oldsm ith. The cheapest th in g to order at the Hyatt
(another im portant topic of study) is either w ater (from the tap) or the chocolate chip cookies from the
bar. The Hyatt is, by far, th e best place to phone from . Our m ouths started w a te rin g at the list of food
m ost m issed from hom e: Hagan Daaz, pepperoni pizza, real deli sandw iches, bagels and lox, M & M 's,
steak, Big Macs, E ntem an's doughnuts, K raft Mac and Cheese, M exican and Chinese food. M ost
people th o u g h t the toga party w as the best party of th e year (thanks to Rich and Shaun), w ith th e OYP
opening party pretty close behind (those of us w ho rem em ber much). W e're really w orld travellers —
16 countries w ere m entioned as the best vacation spot outside of Israel. S urprisingly, Sinai and Turkey
w ere the favourites. The favourite place to go for a weekend w as Sinai, again, follow ed by Tiberias,
Eilat, and a relative's house. A nd the academ ically oriented group th a t w e are, more than 50% of us
studied less than one hour a week. But, then again, classes really did seem to get in the w ay of our
education. Finally, th e most annoying thing about Israel and Israelis: most of the girls w ho responded
though t Israeli men and th e ir pick-up lines and cat-calls w ere the w drst. O ther com plaints w ere the
Israelis' im patience and im politeness, the banks, the phones, the cockroaches, the Hebrew language,
and th e fact the "Isra e lis d on't give you your change in your hand... alw ays on th e co u n te r." But, we
m ust apologise fo r neglecting to include the best thing about Israel and Israelis. It w as a a m ajor
oversight. As w e all know , Israel has many w o n derful th in g s to offer. One OYPer expressed his
thoughts w e ll: "I'm kosher and in Israel I can go out to eat anyw here. It may sound trivia l, but I th in k it's
great. Israel makes me feel at hom e."

M y Encounter with OYPers
W ritin g an article in English w h e n it's not your m other tongue is rather d ifficu lt. I am from Belgium ,
and study as a regular student, at Hebrew U niversity. The firs t week that I w as here I fe lt quite lost,
especially w hen I heard and saw the One Year Program people. A ll I heard was ' ,Hey, w h a t's up?" I
really d id n 't understand w h a t w as going on. I looked all around to see w h a t w as up, but there w as
nothing there. I co u ld n 't believe how loud they were, and I fe lt very intim idated. I th o u g h t "O h my G־d.
W ill I have to deal w ith these people all year? W ell, ye a h ." I w as kind of trapped and I had no choice. So I
told m yself th a t I w o u ld try to make the best of it, and to my surprise, it really turned out to be fantastic.
M ost of my frie n d s now are on the OYP, as w e ll as my w o n d e rfu l boyfriend (the editor). I learned so
m any new th in g s and my English has im proved incredibly. Now I go around shouting "Hey, w h a t's
up?" w ith o u t th in kin g th a t it's strange. As tim e goes on, the more th a t I hang out w ith the One Year
people the more I enjoy it. It's a great experience and there is nothing of th is year th a t I regret.

Iisked by most people of Canadians. Canada is not the 51 st state, it is not "little A m e rica" in igloos, and
t is not just "The G reat W h ite N orth". Canada is a land of diversity, a country that prom otes m ulti-
:ulturalism and has its ow n designer labels — Roots, Club Monaco, and Beaver Canoe!!! During the
jo u rs e of the OYP, the Canadians have made it th e ir business to stand out and be heard. M any of the
ditors of th is yearbook are Canadian. Toronto is one of the most represented city on the program.
These are ju s t tw o of m any statistics to support the case; although all Canadians are not bilingual,
Canada is a bilingual country. Canada is one North Am erican country th a t recognises th a t people in
■his w orld really do speak languages other than ju st English. The easy w ay to tell a Canadian product
*rom an A m erican is to sim ply seeing w hich has the w ritin g in both English and French. M any great
lelebrities have th e ir roots in Canada: M ichael J. Fox, W ayne Gretzky, W illia m "C aptain K irk"
shatner, and the renow ned Dr. M. Nisan. Sure Canada has its problem s — acid rain, courtesy of our
Neighbours to th e south, draft dodgers from the U.S. A rm y at the first sign of conscription to name, a
(8w, but w e are sure to overcom e th is in the fu ture. The next tim e you're thinking of an alternative in
!acation spots, consider encountering th is Canadian experience — a land of bustle, beauty, and

TOGA
The night of October 20th was a quiet night in the dorm itories of Hebrew University. A ll students
w e n t to sleep as usual, expecting to wake up and face another autum n day in Jerusalem . But, October
21 st w o u ld be a d iffe re n t day for these students. Little did they know th a t there w as som ething lurking
in the halls th a t night that w ould change the young innocent lives of these Overseas Students.
The m orning of October 21 st arrived. The w a lls of Resnick told th e story. Signs plastered all over
them reading: Toga Party, October 27th, Tim e 9:37 p.m. ALL THE BEER YOU CAN DRINK. 5 shekels in
toga, free if nude.
No one could believe it after 4 m onths — a real party! Two young men know n to th e irfrie n d s as Rich
and Shaun took it upon them selves to invest th e ir parents' money in 350 litres of beer.
The night fin a lly arrived. The scene w as set. A live band, kegs flo w in g w ith beer, and lots of people
ready to get sick and vom it everywhere.
The rest, my friends, is history. There are m a n y accounts of th e g o in g ons a tth is p a rty,b u t th e tru th
w ill never be know n. An innocent bystander said he could hear and sm ell the beer up in French Hill.
O thers say that the party w as the best ever m aking A nim al House look likea Sunday m orning brunch.
Rich and Shaun made history on O ctober 27th, 1988, and repeated th is on New Year's Eve,
changing the m eaning of the w ord "p a rty " at Hebrew University.

EVE
Capitalism ! One of m an's greatest successes. C ontrary to popular belief, it is one of the greatest
m otivating factors in today's society. It has propelled hundreds o f students to travel overseas, pursue
an education, and, of course, seek out the biggest party possible.There are tw o kinds of people in this
w orld: those w h o continuously search, and those w ho provide. M y close associate, Shaun Kobrin, and
I are am ong the latter.
W ith th e assistance of a little plastic credit card, w e th in k BIG and strive for excellence. New Year's
Eve is the greatest party night of the year and provides the greatest opportunity fo r tw o young
entrepreneurs looking to supply e ntertainm e nt fo r overseas students desperately seeking a good tim e
w ith the greatest am ount of beer. Students found refuge in M oadon 18 from the longing
hom esickness w e all w e n t through as our other friends w ere home celebrating. Like birds going South
for the w in te r, 300 students flocked to building 18, only to be transform ed into drunk, bum bling fools.
Never have I realised the value people hold fo r "A ll the beer you can d rin k". Of course, it w as not New
u, Year's at home, but w e made our best attem pt to create an atm osphere very sim ilar to th a t of a New
Year's party abroad.

Purim — the holiday w e've all looked forw ard to since w e got here. W here else in the w orld do we
celebrate Purim fo r tw o days? M any of us began the celebration in Tel Aviv, w here w e got to
experience th e m anic lunacy in the streets. But, then came the best part: Purim in Jerusalem . W e piled
into Hecht Synagogue dressed up and excited — after already having distributed and eaten our
m ishloach m anot. The M egilah reading w as quite an experience consisting alm ost com pletely of
overseas students. A candy w a r w as waged between the balcony and those below. A fte r that, it w as
tim e to celebrate Queen Esther's victory and w e drank so that w e could no longer d ifferentiate
betw een Haman and M ordechai. M ost people happily fu lfille d th is mitzvah — as could be seen by
those dancing and singing in the Forum and later stum bling around in tow n or at the Baraton.

's too hard not to. This is fo r all you pseudo-jock strap heads in the audience. You see th is year w as
e lig h tfu l in the fact th a t w e could rub the Lakers, 49ers, Dodgers, and A 's into your sappy faces. Man,
/e just hope that you New Yorkers can stop crying all day about the sporting ineptitude out there. It is
Iso great to have stolen Gretzky from you Canadians. But, enough of that. O nw ard ho.

Here w e have Richard Spencer and his reflections of our special Ulpan:
The class w as a m icrocosm of Israel. Sum m er Ulpan class, Bet 1, at Haifa U niversity — w here the
U niversity of C alifornia had its Ulpan — contained all kinds of different folks. There was us, a fe w other
Am ericans, a Swede, a Germ an, a couple of Latin A m ericans, and a South A frican w ith an accent so
thick you could slice it w ith a machete.
Now, I don't w a n t to sound like Jam es W att, Ronnie Reagan's old Secretary of the Interior, w ho was
made fam ous by his "B lack, tw o Jew s, a w om an, and a cripple rem ark. Each one of these students
came to represent a life-style, a country, a continent. It w as like learning Hebrew w ith the United
Nations — only a pro-Israel UN! W e connected — most of us, anyway — by being Jew s draw n to the
Jew ish state fo r as many reasons as there w ere Jew s in the class. And th e non-Jew ish students'
desire to learn Hebrew brought them closer to the rest, w ho also shared th is desire.
W e w ere also of vastly diffe re n t ages. There w ere young Californians, the m iddle-aged South
A frica n im m igrant, and a retired A m erican w om an w ith some spare tim e on her hands. It w as at firs t a
little strange to be in the same class as someone th a t could have voted for W arren Harding, but in tim e,
distinguish ing features like nationality and age became less im portant as w e grew to know each other.
So th is is ju st a taste ■— maybe ju st a sm ell — of my sum m er Ulpan class. Som etim es it seems like
yesterday that I w as greeting th e Colom bian w ith a "Com o estas?", som etim es like an eternity.

You may ask, in your in fin ite jealousy, w h a t is so unique about UC and its big EAPness? W ell, firstly, 0
w e apply to the program through our hom e university. You m ust have a 3.0 and go through a series of
interview s to be accepted. C om petition is extrem ely tough. The UC representatives you see here are
the select, th e fe w chosen among w h a t is rum oured to be m any candidates. We paid for th is year
through UC, th u s saving us m uch dinero to spend on ourselves or others w ho are needy. Instead of
spending a hot sum m er Ulpan living at Givat Ram and having to bus to classes, w e w ere taught
Hebrew in the lovely environm ent of Haifa University. We lived in a nice highrise dorm overlooking
Haifa, only a m inutes w alk from class. The beach alw ays beckoned after class. Our advisors knew q
better than to divorce C alifornians from the beach during the sum m er.
W e have our ow n office in G oldsm ith, com plete w ith professor Julian "N othing is com plete
w ith o u t a p e titio n " Feldman from UC Irvine, one hell of a guy; and one of Israel's best natural
resources, Chana "I hate p e titio n s " Arnon. The office is everything from post office to bank to
psychiatric hospital. A w onderful place.
A dditionally, w e have neat things such as: holiday dinners, great tiyuls, free yearbooks, guest
lecturers, etc. M ost im portantly, though (tim e for some cheesy, sentim ental muzzak) is our deep 0
friendships. No phony friendships here, folks — and consequently, no phony birthday parties. Fun,
huh?

Next, for your reading enjoym ent, is th e w in n e r of the 1st annual UC EAPness Prose Contest. The
unanim ous w in n e r w as A aron Stern and his free verse prose entitled: "If Life is a 23 Bus, W hy am I
S itting Next to th e W indow ?" Lucky Aaron w on (drum roll): a free year-book!
The 50 or so of us arrived in Israel on Ju ly 14, after an all night flig h t. A lthough transatlantic
flig h ts can be hellish, w e m aintained our ever-pleasant C alifornia laid-back attitude throughout. By
the end of the flig h t, all of th e stew ardess w ere sm iling and a contingent of Brooklyn hassids w ere
organising a tye-dye party to be held after Shachrit.
C alifornia... So m any im ages and sensations w h ic h accompany thoughts of our w estern state.
S urfing, blondes, easy living, disaffected youth, deranged cu lt members, over-used regional
stereotype...
It's a com bination of being here now, letting it all hang out, doing your own thing, and w a itin g for
th e end of the w orld.

D efinition of aerobics: activity that is required in th e presence of oxygen — w h a t a joke! — or so I
thought on a rainy day in M arch in Jerusalem . I w as prepared for some “ shopping” exercises; you
know — grab the diet Coke, put it in the cart, wave to your frie n d across the aisle, faster girls... — I w as
all prepared for the "w o rk o u t" w ith the essentials — my new Nike running sneakers, sw eat pants, a T-
shirt I w ould never w ash, and a half litre of beer from Club 1 5. Trying to be suave, I strutted into the
aerobics class ready to kick some "shoppin g " ass. W hat I saw w as about 10 fem ales and 6 guys trying
to em ulate th is w om an running around this little stage. So I started to join in. It seemed easy fo r the
firs t 5 seconds. Then the w e ird e st thing started to happen, my heart began to beat very quickly, sw eat
poured dow n my face and my eyes began to bug. This w om an w as jogging, d rillin g her "stu d e n ts", and
taking o ff her clothing. W orst of all her great fig u re w as ruining the trem endous concentration
necessary to m aster the d iffic u lt dance steps th a t w ere included in the exercise. A t least, I began to
understand the large and grow ing male interest in Club 18 aerobics. W ell, from that m om ent on I knew
I had to get to know the instructor better. As Hebrew U's roving aerobic reporter, I fe lt it w as my duty to
"in te rv ie w " the instructor and get an inside scoop on w h a t aerobics w as all about.
Q: W hen did you start your legendary aerobic career?
A: I started doing aerobics w hen I w as 16 and graduated high school, but I've been dancing ever since I
w as a child. I supplem ent my dance know ledge into my aerobic routine. (W hat I th in k she w as trying to
say w as: "I w as 16 and began to notice I w as getting hefty. I realised that some guys liked 'lovehandles',
but I knew th is w as getting ridiculous. So I w ent out and did som ething about it.")
Q: W hat specific event directed your life tow ards a career in aerobic physical fitness?
A: A bsolutely no specific event. Keeping fit is the reason I do aerobics, and exercise is an essential part
of being fit. As they say, "A fit body produces a fit m ind". (W hat I th in k she w as really trying to say was:
No com m ent, th is question is so personal and im portant, th a t w ords ju st can't do the answ er ju stice.")
Q: W hat excites you m ost during aerobics?
A: First, seeing you in my class. Second, w hen I see people giving it th e ir all and know ing I'm the
source of this intensity. (W hat I th in k she w as really trying to say was: "First, seeing you in my class.

Q: Do you ever sleep?
A: That is the stupidest question I ever heard. Believe you me, I sleep th e same as everybody else.

pumped up to do aerobics the next day. By the way, th a t was a great soul searching question. Did you
steal it from Oprah?")
Q: W hat w ould you recom m end for all those beginner aerobicers out there?
A: Get to know your body. Start w ith a low -m edium intensity aerobics class and build up a good sweat
w ith o u t straining yourself. (W hat I th in k she w as really trying to say was: "A ll you BUMS out there
should get your fat, lazy, happy asses down to your nearest aerobics class and fin a lly begin to get your
shape to resem ble som ething hum an.")

This is our home aw ay from home. The Hebrew U. w e ig h t room. Some of us spend up to 12 hours a
w eek in th is place ju s t fo r the fun of it, and it really is fu n Despite the physical torture it involves we

provided us w ith great m em ories and some really good muscles. The "c re w ” is pretty m otley — there
are guys and girls from all over the U.S., South A frica, South A m erica, France, and, of course, Israel.
A nd there are those "u n iq u e " people that the w e ig h t room w ould be incom plete w ith o u t. "The Cube"
— or hostile gardener w ho is as ta ll as he is w ide, sw ings from th e bars, hates all music, and is only
capable of g ru n tin g to com m unicate. The little professor man w hose one curl bops on the floor w hen
he does push-ups. M ike — our fearless leader, w ho is alw ays in sweats, in and out of the w e ig h t room,
and w hose age is a m ystery to us all. The wacky lady from L.A., w ho w ears mesh tops, flow ered pants
and black boots to th e gym, and only goes there to hit on young guys. And, of course, our own
gang...Rich Cohn, w ith his co-ordinated sneakers and Kerm it grunts. J e ff L., w ith his m otivational
yelling and his ever-present enthusiasm . Rosie w ith his ripped clothing and Jane Fonda floor
exercises. Tam m y and Stacy, the w e ig h t w om en, w ho try to add a little life and laughter to the w eight
room. A nd th e rest of the guys and girls w ho devote th e ir tim e to m oulding th e ir bodies and making the
gym a really fu n place to be. W e may never find another w e ig h t room w ith such com araderie and an
inspirationa l vie w of sunset over the Old City.

A Self-Guided Running Tour of Israel and Egypt
The 19 8 8 -'8 9 OYP in stille d many m em ories and experiences in all of us. W e hiked, made life-long
friends, visited historical sites, ate Shabbat dinners w ith religious fam ilies, studied??? A nd some of us
learned how to cook. But, how m any of us can say w e ran thro u g h o u t Israel and Egypt and competed in
races w ith Israelis and other athletes from over 20 other countries?
Running has played a m ajor role in my life fo r the past year, but this year w as extra fantastic and
w ill be a m em ory as long as I live. Some h ighlights include the fo llo w in g : running around M ount
Scopus to G ivat Ram, running in Tiberias and along the Kinneret, running from Eilat to Taba, running
from M igdal HaEmeq to Nazareth, running in Cairo at 4 a.m. and getting lost, running in Dahab,
ru nning in Mea Shearim on Shabbat, running in Netanya and Tel Aviv, running in Jerusalem w hen I
should have been in class!
M uch of my to u rin g and sightseeing w as done w h ile I pounded the pavem ent and gazed at all the
beauty surrounding me from all sides. Camels, donkeys, m ountains, sea, desert, forest, the Old City...
Each of my daily ru nning ja u n ts added a new perspective and dim ension to my picture of Israel. A
picture th a t I w ill alw ays carry deep w ith in my heart.
A lthough I suffered a stress fracture in September, w h ile tra in in g in th e Golan Heights, I managed
to stay in shape by sw im m in g every day fo r an hour at the G ivat Ram pool. My leg com pletely healed in
early December, and I began tra in in g to com pete in tw o races in Israel. On February 18th, I ran the
Giona Ron Ein Gedi, 25 km race. The course began in Ein Gedi and continued to th e foot of Massada
before re tu rn in g to the fin is h line at th e Ein Gedi Spa. The vie w of the Dead Sea on my left during the
race w as absolutely gorgeous! I com pleted the race in 1:46:27 and cam e in 48th place in the 200-
ru n n e r field. I indulged m yself in the hot springs fo llo w in g the race.
But, no day of running can com pare to my com petition in the Tel-A viv m arathon on M arch 15th. I
m et runners from all over the w orld as th e w e a th e r conditions w ere perfect to carry on a conversation
w ith other runners th ro u g h o u t the 26.2 m ile course along Dizengoff, Ramat Gan, and the city of Tel-
A viv itself. I finished in a tim e of 3:14:34 and came in 58th place. Fellow OYP participant Jack "C oby"
Zaremski cam e in 25th in a tim e of 2 hours and 42 m inutes (250 runners competed in the m arathon).
W e ate ice cream at Ben and Jerry's fo llo w in g the great m orning of pain and accom plishm ent.
As I return to the United States and continue running as w e ll as racing, I w ill k n o w th a t not a single
day^of tra in in g can com pare to th e spectacular view s and my feelings during a daily run in Israel. It w ill
be sad to no longer see the cam els or dash buses trying to run me over as I gaze at the views. My
running in Israel w ill be treasured, and, perhaps, someday I w ill return for more.

W hy go to Tel-A viv w hen Jerusalem is so obviously the superior city? I asked m yself the same thing
rytim e I got on the bus to get there. I discovered there are a fe w good reasons to visit, despite the
ussle and bustle of the crowded w esternised city. First, the beach, a w onderful excuse to skip school,
r all, Jerusalem doesn't quite have a beach and a definite effort m ust be made to m aintain that
ual tan. A n o th e r good reason is to v is it friends at Tel-A viv U. But let's be honest. W hat is the real
w e all found ourselves in line at the far end of the Tachanah Mercazit? So th a t w e could get a
taste of A m erican food. The openings of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, and of W endy's w ere tru ly G-
-sends. No m atter th a t it's about a 20 m inute w alk between the tw o, w e have all managed to h it both
n if w e're ju s t in for th e day. The w alk to Ben and Je rry's prior to eating W endy's ham burgers (still
eeping kosher — even in Tel-Aviv) is ju s t long enough to earn us a large order of fries (as a side order)

VOLUNTEERING
Being in Israel th is year w as a w onderful experience and part of this experience w as intensified by
the tim e I spent outside of my studies. One of the most im portant aspects of my life this year w as being
involved in an Israeli child's life. This past year I volunteered at M avaseret Zion, a suburban area 10
m inutes outside Jerusalem , on the Jerusalem -Tel Aviv highw ay. These children needed help w ith
th e ir English hom ework, but they especially needed to be w ith new people. A t the same tim e th a t I was
helping a child w ith his English, he w as helping me w ith my Hebrew. Since the children there needed
a teacher or a big brother, it gave me an opportunity to see how Israeli children live th e ir lives and how
they feel about everything th a t is going on around them . Giving my tim e w as occasionally d ifficult, but
the end result w as so rew arding th a t it w as w orth it. To spend tim e and offer my help to these children
gave me the feeling that no m atter w h a t the circum stances I could help a child feel good. In turn, I w as
made to feel that my volunteer w ork w as an im portant and w o rth w h ile experience.

Elwyn (form erly Sw edish village) is home to approxim ately 275 children, young adults and seniors,
situated in Kiryat M enachem , a suburb of Jerusalem .
The Swedish Village w as named in recognition of the g ift from the Swedish governm ent of several
cottages and trees planted in m em ory of 99 Jew ish children shot dow n over Sweden during W orld
W ar II. A t th a t tim e the fa cility w as a convalescent home. In 1958 it became a residence fo r the
retarded, w h ich grew from 10 residents to its present num ber, under th e auspices of the Israeli
governm ent.
In Septem ber 1988, Jerusalem Elwyn assum ed m anagem ent of the Village, a tth e invitation of the
G overnm ent. In planning for the fu tu re , w e expect to im prove the physical plant and to enhance the
q u a lity of life for the residents.
Because our philosophy is client-centred, we have introduced th e case m anagem ent system as the
basis fo r clie n t care. Every resident has a case manager, trained in special education, social w ork, or
psychology, w hose prim e responsibility is to evaluate client strengths and needs and to form ulate an
Individual W ritten Program Plan, w ith w hich to begin w ork w ith the client. We have added ancillary
professional staff in. areas of speech, occupational, m ovem ent and recreation therapy, special
education and psychology, to fa cilita te the im plem entation of individual programs.
Today, 7 0 ,children are transported daily to neighbouring schools. The residents w h o are either
under or over school age rem ain on cam pus w h ere they are involved in educational and vocational
programs. Here, too, the em phasis is on enrichm ent of existing educational m aterial and im provem ent
of vocational program s w ith no more diversified and challenging w ork. A fternoon activities are
available to the residents.
W e are interested in creating a volunteer netw ork of people w ho w ill contribute th e ir tim e and
energy to Elwyn.
The volunteers w ill w ork on im proving the physical plant and aiding the direct-care and
professional staff eith e r w ith individuals or in groups. W e hope to utilise the talents and skills of our
volunteers to expand our recreational program m ing into new areas.
Elwyn also has a w ork activity program fo r clients w ho live in the com m unity. This is a day program
in w hich the clients are taught basic w ork skills and appropriate behaviours. Goals for m any of these
clients are entry into the com petitive m arket or supportive em ploym ent in th e co m m u n ity. Volunteers
w ho w ork in conjunction w ith the day program, w ork w ith individual clients at the end of th e ir work
day.

Elections
Like everything else in Israel, the U niversity does not escape com plete politicalization. The student
Ijn io n is run by political parties aligned w ith the national ones. Everyone has th e ir ow n political
fconvictions, or th e y're te rrib ly confused. The cam pus is transform ed at election tim e. Posters, t-shirts,
■lyers, and, m ost of all, stickers control the w a lls and blind the eyes. A rgum ents flair, friendships are
te m p o ra rily suspended, and w hispered conversations echo the halls of Goldsm ith. The elections for
■he 3 overseas seats w ere contested by the GILAD (the LIKUD faction) against a coalition of OFEK-
13METZ (the labour and RATZ-M APAM factions). Each day, tables in fro n t of G oldsm ith advertised the
■nerits of each group. Door to door cam paigning interrupted one at 11:00 p.m. By the last fe w days, the
■ w o sides w ere fa r from speaking term s. But, afterw ards, friendships w ere renewed. The political
■ever forgotten, the vote w as w on by GILAD, w ho captured all three seats.

Student Committee
The S tudent C om m ittee is a group of students w h o either realised that the bureaucracy of the
school w o u ld not give us everything w e w anted, or just w anted to get involved in helping do
som ething. In addition to the num erous parties organised ( The opening at the One Year Party, and the
February Opening Party being ju st two), the com m ittee w as involved in the "M issionary Go Hom e"
sem inar, distrib u tin g sufganiot for Hanukkah, organising certain sporting events: the year and in
organising the Beit H illel-O S A theatre w orkshop's play "O n ly Fools are Sad". In addition they played a
m ajor role in reopening the Apple M acintosh Com puter Room w ith in weeks of its being closed. In all,
th is year has been a relatively successful one for the Student Committee, despite some brief rocky
periods.

stories do...
The w ord w as spread, and so it began. A ll those interested practised th e ir craft w ith great
anticipatio n as the judgem ent day grew near. Soon it w as upon them .
They sang and told stories as the man named M ike w atched on, and those w hose num ber had not
yet been called, w aited apprehensively.
The selection had been made and the seem ingly im possible task of m aking som ething out of
nothing had begun. The w ork w as hard and the hours long. Those w ho lacked the stam ina fe ll to the
w ayside as th e place picked up. Those w ho rem ained became a strongly bonded w ell oiled acting
machine. The 1989 Overseas Program 's presentation of "The H assid" w as to be a reality.

Over th e past year, students have had the opportunity to participate in the Hecht Synagogue's Beit-
M idrash program. Every M onday night, over 100 students and th e ir tutors meet and discuss topics
ranging from Jew ish Philosophy, to Torah, to various holidays. B eit-M idrash has offered students the
chance to choose subjects w h ich interest them .
O ften these one-on-one sessions have led to unexpected friendships and an occasional invitation
for a Shabbat or a festival. W hen w e leave Israel, B eit-M idrash w ill be among those experiences w hich
m ost affected us.

Each one of us w h o came to Israel came fo r a reason. We could have studied in Belgium , England,
France, Italy, Hungary, or Yugoslavia, but we chose not to. W e chose to travel to a little Jew ish state
w ith m any big problem s. Why?
There is som ething special here in Israel; older than Stonehenge and more valuable than the crow n
jewels. G-d, Torah, Judaism . Every Je w can relate on his or her ow n level. This is our home. This is our
past, and it's our future.
I tru ly believe th a t if necessity is the m other of invention, then fru stra tio n is its father. These tw o
ingredients along w ith a sprinkling of determ ination and more than a dash of patience form ed slow ly
into a m asterpiece called M ANNA.
M anna ( "y o u r Jew ish group on cam pus") began in Septem ber of '8 8 w ith the logo: M an cannot
live on bread alone. I w as taking a chance. There w as no student-run tra d itio n a l Jew ish organization
on cam pus so the tim e w as ripe. I w as w orking along the prem ise th a t "you and I can change the w orld
and all the rest w ill fo llo w " ‏•״-‏ a fe w follow ed, w ith o u t the help of the Shauns, Eds, Asaphs, Matts,
Joshes, and M elindas (etc...) there w ould be no M anna.
W e began slow ly: a shabbaton on the subject of Jew ish m ysticism in the Old City of Jerusalem ,
weekly planning m eetings, a very successful sem inar on the threat of "Jevvs for Jesus" and other
cults and m issionary groups w hich w as later repeated on demand, another shabbaton dealing w ith
m atters of interpersonal relationships, a visit to Hadassah Hospital on Purim to deliver M ishloach,
song and sim chah and speakers on various topics such as G!~stnost, w om en's issues and the
science/T orah dichotom y.
Those w ho w ere afraid, slow ly began to emerge from th e ir hiding places to enjoy such events as a
m id-eastern political sim u la tio n game, a sem inar in conjunction w ith the m useum of the potential
Holocaust aim ed at raising awareness as to the problem of grow ing anti-S em itism in North Am erica, a
Lag Baom er bonfire and barbeque, a chassidic festival, and an all night Shavuot study session ending
w ith sunrise at the Kotel.
To look back now, I am nothing less than overw helm ed w ith the success of th is group. This group
gave me the opportunity to share a piece of my peace w ith all w ho partook in w h a t it had to offer.
In the days of the Exodus, M anna fell from the heavens in order to nourish those Jew s w ho had left
Egypt and w ere w andering lost in the desert. We, the Overseas Students, lost in the desert of Galut,
soared some thousands of m iles through the heavens, to be nourished in some capacity by Judaism
and all that Israel has to offer. I hope th a t M anna proved w o rth w h ile for those in the search for Jew ish
nourishm ent.
A nother interesting aspect of the Torah's M anna is that it tasted exactly as one w ished for it to
taste; it w as w h a t you w anted it to be. In the same sense our M anna at Hebrew U niversity was
moulded and shaped by all w ho participated, w e created it, it is w h a t w e w anted it to be — and how
sw eet it is!
To those w ho come next, and to all those w ho helped this seed to prosper — Thank you. I w ish next
year's M anna all the good mazel that this year's M anna w as blessed w ith. Please rem em ber a 10
thousand m ile journey begins w ith one step. In the w ords of H illel: Ifl am not for myself, w ho w ill be for

BASP Fairy-tale
Once upon a tim e (w hat did you expect — it's a fairytale!), there w as a group of Aussies and
Pommes w ho descended dow n upon the fa ir land of Israel. A lthough in a foreign environm ent, these
people soon learnt to adjust, stealing cutlery from restaurants and purchasing under-age bus tickets!
They discovered the delights of th e Israeli countryside and took Geology fie ld trip s on the num ber 23
bus. This strange tribe also sought out and found a pleasant w ater-hole nam ed ,'The Cavern".
Crossing the Egyptian border became second nature to them and many returned w ith tales o f
"heady experiences". U nfortunately, the vice of gam bling set up as Poker nights became a regular
feature of th e ir lives. People w ho had not picked up a paper in years now clam oured for a glim pse of
"N ew s of the W o rld ". Letters (or the lack of them ) could make or break ones day. Those Aussies and
Pommes sure had a w e ird dress-sense; w e re n 't sheets for sleeping on in most cultures?
Soon they began to appreciate the fin e r sides of th e ir hom e lives back in G.B. and A u stra lia — to ile t
paper, vege-m ite, and neighbours! However, w hen things became too much, one could always resort
to drinks at th e Hyatt on ones credit card, of course.
And, last but not least, the w ork, essays, hom ework... No? Oh w ell, I guess all fairytales ca n 't end
happily ever after — but th is one cam e pretty close!

WALES.
I th in k th a t I can consider m yself to be one of a rare breed, in that I am a W elsh Je w w ho has come to
study in Israel, even if it's only fo r a year. Being a Je w in W ales, is quite a rarity, fo r all the ones there
w ere m any th rivin g com m unities in South W ales and the Valley Regions (in am ongst the coal mines)
there now rem ains only one center of Judaism in W ales, in the capital city, Cardiff. Even there, there is
only one orthodox synagogue and about a thousand Jews, of w h ich only a score are strictly Observant.
These are, indeed, sad tim es for a country w h ich has so m uch in com m on w ith Israel. W ales is
approxim ately the same size as Israel, w ith approxim ately the same population. Like Israel, W ales has
the sea as one of her borders, and a language different to those spoken in other lands. W ales has
th e Israeli tra it of being fa irly pathetic at sports, w ith the exception of rugby. The tw o countries are also
both surrounded by th e ir enem ies on all sides. W ales has a beautiful countryside, m uch like Israel has
in the Golan and G alil. Also, the in stitu te s w here the W elsh language is taught are called Ulpanim.
A lthough Israel is the place w h ere all Jew s should try to live their lives, W ales, in my opinion, w ould
perhaps be one of the next best places, if it had a larger Jew ish population. 0
W hat is encouraging fo r Je w s in W ales, and C ardiff in particular, is the num ber of youngsters
com ing to Israel, e ith e r tem porarily or perm anently. It is doubtful w h e th e r my com m unity in Britain, of
com parable size can boast as many high ranking soldiers in the Israeli arm y and airforce as Cardiff.
A m ongst the youngsters w ho are still in Cardiff, many express a preference to move away from the
city, although quite a high num ber say that living in Israel is a realistic possibility.
Having been in Israel for 8 m onths now, it w ill be w ith m ixedfe e lin g sth a t I return to W ales. On one
hand, I w ill retu rn to the "Land of my Fathers" as the fam ous rugby song goes, and there I w ill be able
to encourage more people from Cardiff to come to Israel, but I w ill be leaving Eretz Israel, the beautiful
country w h ere I made so m any friends and had such good tim es. Hopefully, my departure w ill only be
tem porary.

If your alarm doesn't w ake you, they w ill. They come every m orning at the crack of daw n and are
more punctual than an atom ic clock. And they come armed, armed w ith a soppy old rag on the end of
an odd-looking mop thing and a sloppy pail of stagnant w ater. B u tw o rs e .fa rw o rs e th a n th e irp e c u lia r
w eaponry is the noxious , stom ach-turning odour, capable of pervading an entire building, th a t they
e m it w h ils t going about th e ir ritu a listic business. They belong to a unique breed of m am m al. They are
the Squeegy W om en, origins unknow n, but possibly D arw in's m issing link. They are the w om en w ho
come and erect an assault course of suds and floods on your floor every day. They are unavoidable. The
squeegies are loud, clattering and conspicuous. Go into the kitchen, th e y'll be there. Go into the toilet,
th e y 'll be there. Go into the showers, th e y'll be there, squeegying away. These tribeslike wom en,
atired in the m ost bizarre costum ery and headwear, haven't yet m astered th e art of speech. They are
not uncom m unicative, but th e ir w ords are unin te llig ib le and they raise th e ir voices to fe w decibels
short of concord. Nor are they unskilled, for they are experts at getting in your way, and they shaft
around w ith the speed of a sloth.
The Squeegy W om en are a phenomena. Come the m orning and these causers of the greatest
floods since Noah suddenly leave. They announce th e ir arrival at an unearthly hour like a bomb gone
off, but w hen they go you do not even notice. W here they go, nobody knows. Despite the damp and
a w ful lingering sm ell of tackled grim e, you can breathe a sigh of relief, leave the sanctuary of your
room and w ade out across the landing. But come the crack of dawn the Squeegies w ill be back.

BASP: Character Resumes
M r Peter Harold Clem ents: Peter, a prom inent m em ber of BASP, contained all the qualities of a
w ell-bred, good J e w ish football hooligan. Such is his com m and of the English language (an A-1 at A-
level, lest you forget), w ould make a hardened Israeli soldierfeel q uite ill, w ith m em orable and moving
sayings like, "U p your s and f - - your m o th e r!" Peter has w on much respect w ith in the U niversity
w ith his d u tifu l and studious approach w ith the Hebrew classes.
Peter's gentlem anly chivalry comes to the fore fro n t w ith his courteous and rom antic behaviour to
his loved one (or loved ones as the case may be), his charm ing declaration of his "a m o u r" can be heard
fre q u e n tly echoing through the corridors of Resnick 4, "F --- off, you fa t bitch... F - - off! You s m e ll!" and
other subtle innuendoes.
M r. M arc Charles O ppenheim : Marc, w ho caused a large am ount of concern during th e program
w h e n it w as revealed th a t he w as suffering from A norexia Nervosa. In fact, his infam ous generosity
w h e n it com es to food, w as partly the cause of this. S m iling, he w ould w elcom e a hungry passer-by
w ith , "m y fridge is alw ays open, it's not a problem ."
M r. M ark Leonard G rynberg: M ark's athletic build and his v irility has w on him the adm iration of
m any long-legged, m odel-like w om en w ith in the campus.
Though M ark's excessive generosity has often led him into trouble, m any take advantage of his
s p e n d th rift characteristic.
Though M ark's sym pathetic nature is most prom inent during our Tuesday night poker sessions, his
concern and com passion fo r those less fo rtu n a te than him is tru ly adm irable, w ith kind and caring
rem arks like, "A royal flu sh of hearts is better than p— " ... or, "D o you need a loan of 5 shekels,
though I need it back at 6 a.m. w ith interest. "Though, norm ally teetotal he still retains a rem arkable
a b ility to consum e large am ounts of alcohol, w h ils t still rem aining cool, calm, and collected.
Though com ing from a w e a lth y fam ily, M ark is surprisingly coy and bashful about his personal
properties. He prefers to take a back-seat roll w hen it comes to conversations about financial m atters.
M iss Kim Jaquelin e Pryer: K im 's pacifist nature and gentillesse became apparent from the very
beginning, her soothing w ords to Mr. Peter Clem ents, "If you laugh, I'll burn a hole in your fa c e !" Her
slender, sensuous fig u re is accentuated by her inexpensive choice of clothes. Kim prefers the
Bohem ian look, one can see her w h irlin g m ajestically through the Resnicks w ith her colourful head
scarves blow ing softly in the w ind.
Though K im 's am azing athletic ability stunned many on the sea to sea hike, she became an
exam ple fo r many, leading w ith the equally energetic Lisa. The tired and w eary saw her scarf as a
symbol of strength.
M iss Lisa M iriam Sotnick: Lisa, a shy and introverted girl, w ho unfortunately has been plagued by
acne since th e beginning of the course, came to the Hebrew U niversity on a scholarship due to her
poverty-stricken background. Her dainty footsteps and her modest, hum ble dress sense reflect her
relaxed m e llo w tem peram ents.
Her secure and solid relationship w ith the m ature and sensible Sim on is an exam ple to all other
couples... Her ability to discuss, calm ly and quietly, dom estic problem s is rem arkable. Lisa, as w e can
see, is a very in tim a te girl w h o w o u ld rather be alone w ith a good book than socialising w ith the
w e a lth y Je w s in th e ir "R alph Lauren U n ifo rm " in places such as "L'E q u ip e ".
Her relationship w ith others in BASP, especially w ith the skinny philanthropist, M arc Oppenheim,
has laid the foundations fo r a long and lasting friendship. Her im m ortal w ords "Even my fa th e r doesn't
speak to me th a t w a y " has become a touching catchphrase. M arc's pet-nam e, "piece of m eat", is
equally m eaningful.
M r Mark Jutsen: M ark is one of th e particularly obnoxious m em bers of BASP. M ark's loud boasting
of his sexual conquests resound thro u g h o u t the campus. His "w a s tin g -a w a y " room m ate suffers
endless hours of detailed descriptions, in particular about a short and fa t girl w h o lives on a kibbutz.
M iss M iria m S chreiber and Mr. Raphael Berg: M iriam is a loud, dom inant m em ber of BASP.
Frequently seen dow bing several pints w ith the lads at the Cavern, and leading the boys in a chorus of
"W e are red, W e are w h ite , W e are f---in g d yn a m ite !" Her character in juxtaposition to her boyfriend
Raffi is a stric t contrast. Raffi spends most days w andering aim lessly in his flared jeans and Jesus
sandals, handing out leaflets or nuclear disarm am ent w ith an olive branch entw ined in his long,
flo w in g hair.
M r. A n th o n y G runfeld: Tony, th is m ysterious, enigm atic character is alm ost unknow n in the
U niversity. His lofty, m anly fig u re moves silently in the corridors. His reclusive, introverted m anner
happily com bines w ith his room m ate, and from th e ir room in Resnick 3 gentle, lyrical m usic subdues
these tw o naturally quie t individuals.
M r. E lliot G rossm ith: Elliot, a natural rugby player, w hose low intellect only allow s him to read
trashy novels, and to listen to heavy m etal. But Elliot has suffered m uch during the program due to the
lack of contact w ith home, especially his m other, w ho has forgotten his com plete existence.

The decaying beer-stained w a lls of the Cavern Pub rem em bered a tim e, long ago, w hen m erry
laughter, yards of ale and rugby songs bellow ed a sym phony to the sounds of "M a d D og"Ted Cooper.
But, BASP '8 9 had long since departed, scattered around the w o rld to rebuild th e ir lives after 6
m onths of sex, drugs, and rock and roll (for those lucky enough to get it). The Cavern w as left empty.
U ntil tonight.
Sporting a rather obese beer-belly, in came Daniel "I like my b e er" Kingsley hotly pursued by Justin
Donn, w ho had been devoting the past 25 years to rem oving the scars from his face and transferring
them to th a t of his fo rm e r room m ate.
M rs. M iriam Berg arrived alone, apologising fo r Raffi's absence, due to him having been jailed for
m assacring 5 children. Peter had been sent to jo in him fo r bigamy. As the party got underw ay, Simon
reflected on the Camels he used to smoke, but n ow rides, and on the lovely tim es w ith Princess Lisa.
W h ilst Oppy w as still trying to dow n a pint in one, in burst old EC-Tel, rem em bering his days as a
com m ander in the IDF and the rivalry that there used to be betw een him and Jonny "I love A rsenal”
Abram s. Rabbi Cantor could be seen quietly praying in the corner, apparently still m uttering chants of
W ales under his breath. M aking a late entry, in strolled Big Ben, w ho can now no longer Dong on the
hour every hour.
Huddled quie tly in the corner; Emma, Eddie, Sally, and Jo w ere catching up on every bit of gossip
missed over the past 25 years, oblivious to th e fact th a t Adina was s till m issing — or had she sim ply
gone to her sister? Tara took the opportunity to announce th a t she had ju s t divorced her seventh
husband, w h ils t M andy announced that she had to leave — her m other w as having yet another baby.
Jon had fin a lly m arried O livia — or w as it Alison? We never could quite rem em ber w h ich one w as
w h ich! G rynny had ju st been moved from the A ussie Bar for w earing his country's flag instead of a
gow n.
A nd so w e leave BASP of '89. The Cavern Pub w ill certainly never be the same again.

A Semester in the Life...
As the Aussie "convict” mob sauntered wearily off the airport mini-bus, they weren't prepared to
be stifled by the "David Niven", very cultured British lads and lasses. Little were Aussies to discover
that the Brits were actually a bunch of closet meat-head, beer swilling, cavern obsessed alcoholics
and sex fiends. This was only the beginning of what proved to be a very happy association
Yoel, our director, G-d and F-letter perpetrator carefully defined our status at our first BASP
meeting — we were a special group of hand picked individuals, in contrast to the past groups, who had
given BASP such a horrid reputation. Yoel had difficulties competing with Pete, Marc, and Simon's
(Goldstars in hand) raucous laughter. I don't know about the hand-picked bit, but we were definitely
individuals. Ask Sara Anton, whose phobia about her eyeballs popping out and being stepped on has
made her subject to extensive group counselling. Pete, "Alio, Darling, I'm a homosexual" Clements
was completely unaware of the potency of his utterance when interjecting in Tali’s self-description —
Pete to Tali — (interrupts) "You are gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous". We all thought Tali was
completely unimpressed, as indicated by several shades of red Little were we to know that the direct
approach would lead to infatuation.
Brits and Aussies mixed, friends were made, romances blossomed (Lisa and Simon had achieved a
head start by taking advantage of the flight to Israel), and roommates thrown together to discover each
others filthy and intensely annoying habits, characteristic smells, etc. Habits ranged from blowing
one's nose into ones extended y-fronts, farting, burping, accumulating vast quantities of rubbish,
terrorising each other, and feeling the crazed impulse to plaster ones walls in Goldstar bottletops and
Camel cigarette packets.
I wonder if our parents know what we’re doing here. Proudly, I can state that we adhered strictly to
our contract. To "gambling, drunkenness, and the use by anyone of every illegal drug is strictly
forbidden in the rooms or dormitory grounds." This is testified to by poker evenings (Tuesday nights)
and Simon (where's the Vaseline) Usikin’s mysterious fainting spell one particular "sick" evening.
Rumour has it that he was suffering from "gastro-entoritis" and is said to have undergone a liver
transplant at Hadassah Hospital. Another gambling performance was made at the infamous Cavern,
where "rubber-guts" Oppenheim broke the world record for downing, then upping, a pint of beer. Will
Tony Grunfeld ever forget the beach party, or will he ever remember it? Also, it is rumoured that
Grynberg is opening a bar and a la carte restaurant with Elliot. We certainly know why we're here — to
have a good time and, hopefully, acquire some wisdom and knowledge along the way. Unfortunately,
most BASP students suffer from a perpetual identity crisis. Unfortunately, no one knows who we are,
besides Yoel, who wishes he didn't know who we are.
A typical scenario:
Librarian — What programme are you on?
BASP student — BASP
Librarian — What? Mechina? OYP? 4YP?
BASP student — No... BASP (emphatically).
Librarian looks quizzical and eventually concedes to write down "BASP"
Certain prominent people on campus deserve a special mention. Andy, a great guy, who constantly
has exams and an elusive wife. We're slowly trying to council him through his difficulties. Andy is
usually good to go to with problems, especially when he innately responds "F---off, I've had 10 exams
today."
Some lecturers w ill remain with us forever. Lily Pollack, Israel's South African import, is also
known as the Voice of Israel. Shrieks of Zionism at 8:15 in the a.m. are poor elixirs for "sick" Monday
night Cavern hangovers — BASP students nauseously clutch their throbbing heads in one hand, and
cups of coffee in the other. Mr. "the diagram is wrong" Sapir is our intrepid Historical Geographer.
We're finding finding the course really difficult. Apparently, next week the course is being terminated.
Mordechai understated Middle East Nisan — what can I say?
The odd dose of illness, sickness, disease, are all synonymous with living under each others asses.
The chicken pox epidemic is soon to lead to the establishment of a BASP leper colony, kindly founded
by Justin Donn, Katy Filer, and Mark Jutsen.
Luckily, BASP students can escape the campus to the "Hyatt". What would we do without that
revered edifice? Ourv last bastion — of luxury. BASP specimens can regularly be seen hanging around
in sportsjackets or swimming costumes in this now familiar environment. Synonymous with this are
visiting parents which, in turn, is synonymous with a good feed.
BASP students are soon to change their names to "the jet-set". Hello Egypt, Greece, and Turkey.
Hello mum and dad in England, we couldn't stay away from you a whole 5 months. Wait, I'm sure
Mandy's still on the plane to Australia, she left a week ago. Was it a boy or a girl? From the regular
pilgrimage to Dahab, many of us have learnt the meaning of pissing out of our asses. Now, the Brits
have found their pigments to proudly display at home.
Yes, when we head for our respective homelands, how will we ever forget the loud, impatient
American family in the Post Office, the extremely cute little red-headed counter woman at the
supermarket, schnitzel and pasta 7 times a week, Olivia nakedly exposing herself to Justin's parents,
love triangles, shabbat meals at the Kotel, French boyfriends, scares of being kicked off the course, and
the Cavern.
If not next year in Jerusalem, then I'll see you soon in Sydney, Melbourne, London, or Manchester.

BASP: Egyptian Impressions
Egypt revealed an array of im pressions, ranging from the life-style, politics, and body odour of the
people. The predom inant ones are as follow s;
My firs t encounter w ith one of the natives involved the "Essence Experience". Here, an overly
friendly Arab offered to show my group his "h o s p ita lity ". Our host escorted us into a back room w here
he displayed a variety of perfum es, trying to sell them . W e'll never know w h e th e r the Ralph Lauren,
O pium and M usk w e purchased w as the real thing, or sw eat sm elling alcohol
By the end of our trip, Sim on, Bary and I had transform ed into Salem, Barook and Machm ond. We
searched the streets fo r stray foreigners, trying to im itate our Egyptian counterparts. Even w ith our
Fergs and Turkish trousers, our act w as less than convincing.
On the tra in to Luxor, I w as left w ith a rem arkable im pression of a cultured Egyptian attitude to
Israel. Having asked th e guard his opinions on th e Israel-Egyptian entente, he thought for some tim e,
and replied "s ix ", and started te llin g me the names of his fam ily. I then got out a map and re-phrased
the question, w ith graphical back-up. Finally, he expressed his sentim ents, "Israel is s h it".
Luxor w as the adventurous-sm okers paradise, w ith innum erable Egyptian tobaccos to offer in the
many w ater bong stalls. The m agnificent carpet shops, the old men riding by on donkeys, and the
com plete neglection of tim e, created a scene out of the Arabian Nights.
Further South, in Asw an, the m ain attraction of Abu Simbal w as aw e-inspiring. However, to get
there and back w ith o u t tu rn in g into a pool of sw eat presented a problem . During a stop by our taxi, Ben
and I w alked o ff into th e desert, in te n t on having a yellow w in e com petition. My active result, closely
follow ed by Ben's am ber deposit reflected our respective dehydrated situations.
The feluka journey back up the Nile w as so enchanting, you alm ost forgot you w ere caught up in a
violent, chaotic, M iddle East. A m em orable m om ent occurred w hen, after our ears had taken th e ir fa ir
share of our Nubian captain's ballards, w e gave him a W alkm an w ith Fleetwood M ac's "T u sk" in it. He
didn't take the hint, and resum ed w ith renew ed vigour.
Back in the rom antic and aesthetically pleasing capital, w e encounter a frig h te n in g aspect of
Egyptian life, nam ely the attitude to tim e. The "L e t's G o" guide confidently states th a t the average civil
servant w orks fo r 27 m inutes a day, m ost o fth e m as considerate, publicly aware tra ffic policem an. On
the subject of cars, a Cairo taxi journey makes a 23 bus trip through the Arab village during Ramadan
one to look fo rw a rd to. A t one point, I caught sight of a guy on a bike carrying bread loaves on his head.
He w as sw erving from side to side, w eaving his path through an autom obile m inefield. We watched,
and our expressions changed from fe a rfu l anticipation of the inevitable collision, to subsequent relief
as another vehicle w as safely avoided. The man him self rem ained facially em otionless, as though his
| fate w as m ore in the hands of Allah than his handlebars.
An Egyptian resum e is not com plete w ith o u t com plim enting its culinary delights. A lthough

tem pting food w as never fa r away, w e nevertheless decided to bid our budgets adieu and make for the Ramese H ilton Buffet. Visa, you saved my life that night. Never again w ill I launch a com plaint against
shnitzels or tuna-salads.
A ll in all an interesting fo rtn ig h t, my friends and I had no qualm s agreeing w e w o u ld n 't send our
I fu tu re m o th e r-in -la w s there.

BEASTIAL COUPLINGS
W hen the gorgeous Rosalind A u stin assem bled on one program the most desirable, cultured and
gorgeous Englishm en and som e less than virtuous English roses and the A ustralians sent out their
usual rag-bag collection of convicts, BASP u n w ittin g ly lit a fuse that exploded, quite lite ra lly and
prem aturely, in the classic rom ance of the Beauty and the Beast- nam ely the delicious and yum m y
Simon Usiskin and the luscious Lisa Spotnick. A m idst bottles of Toppex and vaseline and inane
laughter, they found each other in the uninhibited euphoria of a rom antic birthday reunion. Lisa
expressed her undying love-physically m anifested in the external love sym bolism of a lum inous
frisbee, a toy bat and deeper still, a kite. Love flourished and trium phed in Resnick. Hee-hee!
For M onique Barda, it was, in the im m ortal w ords of the great Oscar W ilde, a question of "The
Im portance of Being B arry". Resisting the charm s of every Mark, Mark, and Mark, she aw aited the
arrival of her knight in shining arm our. She w as not to be disappointed. In the genre of farce the
im m ortal Barry, hobbled, a painful testes operation later to proclaim "Is mi B arry" and you are the most
"Is h ta r" w om an I have ever beheld. However, as Shakespeare w isely observed: "The course of true

setting of Ben Yehuda Street.
A u stralians have a reputation fo r the hedonistic pursuit of the pleasures of life, and th a n kfu lly we
w ere able to rely on Mark Grynberg to uphold his tradition. His love fo r the petite and sensual Rachel
w as never in question and as he rained flow ers upon her, many began to question his A ustralian
m eathead ancestry. However, M ark proved him self to be a true Aussie, w hen during an illic it poker
evening in his favourite state of inebriation, he im m ortally declared: "A royal flu sh of hearts is better
than p— ." Bob Hawke expressed all of our feelings w hen he presented Mark w ith a drained w hiskey
decanter inscribed: "G ood on yer mate, You'd make a great Prime M in is te r"
However, not all in the m erry ranks of A ndy and Yoel's BASP program m e, w ere im m une to the pain
and heartache of unrequited love. That noble and chivalrous lover of an all but forgotten age, Marc
Oppenheim, in a dignified and essentially British game of chess pondered the unpredictable
vicissitudes of life and love. In a bold and gallant attem pt to capture the perfect beauty of the Queen, he
found him self checked by both moves of Rook and Bishop. And so he was stale-m ated, however, w ith
indefatigable spirit and the help of 14 year old G lenm oranje he ponders his next move.
U nfortunately, the confines of 10 pages w h ich A lison so valiantly w on for all of us do not a llo w for a
detailed account of the num erous BASP rom ances- so a fe w w ords on the rem aining w ill have to
suffice.

Becky Birk and her fam ous French lover, Henri, w hose passions came to an abrupt end w hen they
said a touching "A u R evoir" at the cam pus laundry.
Raffi and M iriam w h o consum m ated th e ir love at an A rm y Base in the W est Bank w ith an M 1 6 and
an Uzi sub-m achine gun.
Of course, w e m ust not forget (how could we?) those w ith absentee lovers. A fter m onths of pining
and subjecting us all to relentless and dull stories of th e ir boyfriends, Olivia, Sara, Jo, Eddie, and
Emma w ere reunited w ith th e ir boyfriends. Hoping fo r a little respite, our illusions w ere soon
shattered, w hen on their respective departures the pining chorus for Jon, Simon, Richard, Daniel and
Steven recom m enced, only m ore vociferously th is tim e.

SINAI
It is 10 p.m., on one of Jerusalem 's coldest and rainiest December nights of the year. Long gone are
those unbelievable sum m er days, w hen everyday w a s fille d w ith nothing but blue and cloudless skies.
Instead, tu rtle necks, long johns, jeans and sw eatshirts are a must, for hail is forecasted th is Shabbat!
So w h a t does one do in a situ a tio n as such? Remain in the cold and dreary dungeon like floors of
Resnick? These are questions th a t need no hesitation. For w here do Hebrew U niversity students go to
to escape the w in te rs calling... South naturally, to th e outrageous beaches of Sinai. This w as exactly
the solution my frie n d s and I w ere seeking that m iserable December night.
W ith our backpacks and sleeping bags in hand, we w ere off to Tel-A viv to catch the M idnight Bus
from Hell to Eilat. This w as not our firs t tim e through the process, so w e knew to beat the early
m orning Sinai crow ds, and w e n t through custom s like true veterans. However, as many tim es as you
cross the border fro m the Is ra e l/E ila t side, you w ill alw ays experience the heebie jeebies. Eilat is a
com pletely developed, w esternised, to u rist trap, fo r Europeans, second sem ester Hebrew U niversity
students, and yes, you too South A fricans! To ׳Sinai w h ich is never-ending m ountains, the aqua-blue
Red Sea, and its untouched, unpolluted beaches.(That my friends, is w h a t it takes to create paradise).
You'll notice only one road to all of S inai's destinations, and nothing in sight but tents and hovels. We
are talking pre-historic age w h ere even the Flinstones w ere m ore advanced.
The tw o areas of Sinai to w h ich one can journey, are th e ever-popular Dahab, and my personal
favourite, "B lu e B us". Dahab is a collection of beachfront cafes, rocky beaches, th e Red Sea and its
m agnificent coral reefs on display. If you are lo o kin g fo re xcite m e n ta n d "lo ts " of interesting travellers
to hang out w ith from all over the w orld, then Dahab is the place for you. Dahab has probably one of the
greatest collections of coral reefs on the Sinai coast, therefore snorkelling is a m ust and should be
repeated often. You w ill also have the honour to m eet som e of A m erica's greatest in uniform ... the
courageous MFOs, w ho w ill attem pt s u chJife threatening feats as opening tw o M illers and one
Heineken beer blindfolded. I salute you boys, for doing such a good job w ith the peaceful situation, and
your iron stomachs.
If you w a n t to escape S inai's "tre n d in e s s " for some real peace and quiet, and avoid any annoying
Hebrew U niversity students w ho are constantly clim bing up and down cam els for stupid photos, then
journey to Nuweiba and the Blue Bus.
W here else can you be am ongst Bedouins, and be invited back to one of th e Bedouin's shacks on
the beach? (Understand, th is is fo llo w in g a session w ith Ishm ael, and the piece-de-resistance w ith
M oham m ed. If w e w ere talking in baseball term s they w ould no doubt be my th ird and clean up
batters... I'm talking... "O u t of here".)
A fte r my th ird tim e to the Blue Bus M oham m ed, Ishm ael, and Issau became my adopted fam ily.
A fte r my fifth tim e to the Blue Bus, the locals decided I, too, had Bedouin blood in me, and I w o u ld now
be referred to as "M oham m ed A li".
On my last trip to the Blue Bus, we w e n t down prepared — six bottles of vodka and plenty of goodies
to give to my "adopted fa m ily ". N aturally they w e n t nuts, psyched to see us, and in m inutes ran to the
kitchen to cook one of th e ir many cuisines. W edid w h a t isalw a ysdone in Sinai: playshesh besh, sit in
the blazing sun, snorkel, toss the disc, sw im , and the ever popular m ale-bonding sport of deep sea
dipping and dum ping.
A nother sixteen pages could be w ritte n on Sinai experiences, but let us ju s t end by saying w hat an
experience Sinai is — sittin g in a Bedouin's prim itive shack drinking tea to the background music of
Pink Floyd's "W ish You W ere H ere"

The travels of overseas students, made possible by ample breaks, have taken them all over this area
of the w orld. Some of us have let our bug fo r travelling take us to not so traditional destinations: Israel's
Arab neighbours, w h ich are still officia lly at w ar w ith our adopted home for the year. These countries
include Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. The d ifficultie s to get to these places are not few . First, since m ost of us
had evidence of Israel in our passport, we had to get new passports issued from an A m erican embassy
outside Israel. Next, one m ust cross over to these countries. Jordan is the obvious starting point since
it is a m e llo w country th a t essentially has ,'u n o ffic ia l” peace w ith Israel. It allow s passage through the
A lle n b y /K in g Hussein Bridge on the pretext that you are co m in g /g o in g from the W est Bank, not
Israel. Illogical, huh? You can also cruise dow n to Nuweiba in the Sinai, get a diffe re n t kind of stoned
than in Israel, then hop a fe rry to Aqaba, in Jordan. Once in Jordan, you fin d w h a t many of us consider
our favourite sight: Petra. It is an incredible place, so we w o n 't try to describe it. Just look at the pics
and go before it is too overrun by obnoxious tourists. As w as said, Jordan is a friendly, m ellow place
w ith a guy running the show w ho looks conspicuously like Sean Connery. He also has a very blonde
w ife w ho doesn't look of the Arab origin she claim s to be. I guess good old Hussein knows how to pull
the right strinc s, huh? W hat a dog!
Now, Jordan is the logical jum ping off point to Syria and Iraq, but people have also gone via Turkey
to Syria. Syria is som etim es d iffic u lt to get a visa fo r if your passport looks suspicious — such as having
a brand new one issued in Istanbul. Supposedly, they a re n 't as strict anym ore. Syria does provideyou
w ith probably the biggest rip -o ff in the travelling w o rld w h e n it com es to exchanging money. You must,
as they sa y,"kin d ly exchange $100 US at the border." Now the catch is you get 11 pounds to the dollar
at the border, 20 at the bank, 45 at the black market, if you can fin d it, (Syrians get 15 years in ja il for
dealing in it) and 70 to one dollar in Am m an, at the bank. Pretty screwed, huh? Also, hotels m ust be
paid in dollars. A ll th is aside, Syria is an interesting country. A llepo and Damascus have beautiful old
cities. The m ountains and coast have nice scenery and interesting sights. There is much history in
Syria. Some of us loved th £ place, some of us th o u g h t it not w o rth the bother to see. The people are
very nice and helpful and probably all of us w ere invited to som eone's hom e at least once. Secret police
are quite evident. The general reaction was: glad I w ent, glad to be out.
Iraq provides a very unique travel opportunity, having only opened its borders to travellers in
January. It is a controversial place, to say the least. This is a place to look, listen, and learn. Baghdad is
a pleasant, m ellow , M iddle Eastern-city. The Kurdish north is very beautiful w ith people in traditional
dress. The south is w here the w ar devastation is. It w as a shock to see the devastation in such m ajor
cities as Bosua. Some of us visited the form er fro n t lines. It w as sobering. Babylon, the old historical
sight, is being reconstructed "to its fo rm e r glo ry", but looks cheesy — not a great place to see. Iraq is
d irt cheap, if you exchange m oney in A m m an and sneak the m oney in. You get 2.2 diners to the dollar
there w h ile only 0.33 to the dollar in Iraq. The best deal w as o v e rn ig h tfirs tc la s s s le e p e rtra in s fo r $2-
3. The place seemed frie n d ly to some of us, but others had hassles w ith the police. Basically, the
reaction to th is place w as the same as for Syria.
I'm sure all of us w ould say our travels to these countries w ere rew arding, but not w ith o u t some
paranoia and fear (more fo r one of us than others). W e all gained valuable insights, got to see more
than enough pictures of Hussein, Assad, and th a t dem agogian d -—head Saddam Hussein (this
a u th o r's unsolicited opinion), and came out w ith a vie w of countries fe w people in our position get to
see.

J A BUG FOR TRAVELLING

W ell, it had been a tough year on the One Year Party. A fte r spending "h o u rs " in the library every
day firs t sem ester, w e needed to get away. We decided th a t 3 weeks in S w itzerland and Italy w ould
provide the relaxation w e needed. On our flig h t to Zurich, w e w ound up in Business Class instead of
Tourist Class — so far, so good. During our week in Switzerland, w e had many... w ell... "in te re s tin g "
adventures. First of all, w e found out th a t S w itzerland is a very trusting country, and w e proved that
North A m ericans a re n 't used to that. W e alm ost got arrested for not paying for our 50 cent bus ride.
Luckily, playing th e dum b to u ris t eventually worked. W hen w e got to Lucerne, w e stum bled onto
Carnival — a w ild tim e, to say the least. W e got drunk on free cham pagne by 10:30 a.m. and danced
through the streets w ith the tow n people dressed in elaborate costum es. But by far the most
exhilarating m om ent on our trip w as skiing in Zerm att alongside the M atterhorn. It w as one of those
m om ents to brag about back in th e States. Being in Italy w as especially exciting for me since my mom
w as born there. It w as like going back into her childhood. In Trieste, w e stayed w ith my aunt fo r a few
days, w h ich w as nice, but sort of stressful, because she speaks no English and w e speak no Italian.
But, of course, w e knew all the food w ords, and food is one of those international languages. From
Trieste, w e made a day trip to Yugoslavia — one more stam p for the old passport! Venice w as very
rom antic and due to our lack of m ale com panionship and shortage of funds, w e only spent a day and a
half there. In Florence w e m et up w ith a fe w more One Year Programers and even did a bit of the art
scene (many, m any renderings of "M adonna and Bam bino"). D efinitely th e scariest city w e w e n t to
w as Naples. W e'd never encountered so m any lecherous men — not even in Istanbul. We made sure
w e spent as little tim e there as possible, making day trip s to Pompeii and Capri — both incredible
places. We finished up our trip w ith a fe w days in Rome. W e explored the ru in s o f A ncient Rome, w ent
to Vatican City (we even heard the Pope speak, although w e co u ld n 't understand a w ord he said) and
browsed in designer shops w here w e could never afford to buy anything. We also got the opportunity
to go to Friday night services at the Great Synagogue and have a Shabbat dinner w ith an Italian Jew ish
fa m ily (pasta a n dchallah — a great combo!). W hen w e got back to Israel, w e had lots of great m em ories
and w ere ready once again for the rigours of the OYP.

to the Ethiopian delegation to the UN in the Fall.

The questions I get asked the m ost outside of Israel are: "Is it safe? A re there riots?" People have a
hard tim e d istinguish ing betw een the areas occupied by Israel in 1967, those under Israeli m ilitary
adm inistration, and Israel itself. For us studying at Hebrew University, the W est Bank is always close
at hand. The university is surrounded by East Jerusalem and from here it is possible to lookout across
the desert and see the hills of Jordan rising from Judea. Because of the Intifada, the Palestinian
uprising th a t started in December of 1987, the W est Bank has not been a popular destination fo r us
students. Some of us, however, made trips. I found it im possible to live here in Israel and not make an
effort to see w h a t w as going on in the W est Bank and Gaza, w here Israel controls a m illion and a half
Palestinian Arabs. I made trip s to the W est Bank on about 10 occasions: 3 tim es to Nablus, tw ice to
Hebron, to Jericho, Bir Zeit, Bethlehem , and Ramallah It can be a very scary experience. You leave
Jerusalem in an Arab-shared taxi. Im m ediately, the only signs of Israel th a t you see are the army. All
signs are in Arabic and English. It takes tim e to pass through the m ilita ry checkpoints. Every w a ll in
sight is covered w ith n a tionalistic g ra ffiti th a t the arm y has painted over. W alking through the tow ns
everyone stares at you. There are no tourists, but people are fantastically friendly. They invite you to
th e ir homes for a meal, to drink tea, then w alk you around tow n until they see an arm y patrol. Then,
they vanish into alleyw ays, because they are afraid to be seen w ith you. The atm osphere is tense, and
w hen the stores close th e streets become deserted. W e once ran into the arm y teargassing the m arket
in Nablus. It is like being in a w a r zone at tim es. But the experience w as w o rth it because despite th e ir
circum stances, th e P alestinians hospitality and friendship shone through.

GOING HOME
If ever there w as a tim e in my life I w as afraid of leaving friends, fam ily, or a beautifu l city, it is now.
Thoughts of th is past year pass through my head — thoughts from my heart. So as I w rite , I rem em ber
the in itia l fears I encountered w hen I arrived to this, th e greatest of all places on earth. H ow it is
d iffic u lt to im agine leaving a city w h ich has offered so m uch to so m any young, aspiring students.
Often, these students joke about th e ir year as being a One Year Party. Perhaps th is is true to some
extent. However, th is year has provided us w ith so m uch more than a sim ple party.
Like a single, burning flam e, 650 strangers came together and shone for perhaps the most
rew arding tim e of th e ir lives. Each w ith his ow n story, each w ith his ow n unique background,and each
w ith so m uch to offer. That one year couldn't possibly be enough tim e to express him self fully. Yet,
during th is tim e, enough w as shared to create a single u n it of love and friendship. As w e reflect upon
our firs t days in Jerusalem , it is im portant to rem em ber all our accom plishm ents and the dream s w e
made real. For everyone adapted and lived in th is not-so-strange culture, and made the m ost of
enhancing th e ir tim e in th is very special place.
Upon your a rrival home, do not dw e ll on the sorrow of a year's end. Each one of us is part of a group
th a t can never be replaced in our hearts. As th e tears begin to w ell in your eyes, th in k not of the year
past, but of th e experiences th a t allow ed you to grow and become a com plete individual. W hen you
attem pt the im possible of explaining your year to those at home, do not feel frustrated because no one
understands. S im ply rem em ber th a t there are 650 others w ho w ill alw ays understand. As I bid
farew ell to the fa m ily I have created, I w ill not say good-bye, but rather, good-day. For f am confident
th a t som e day w e w ill m eet again and say “ S halom ":
