DISCLAIMER: This yearbook has been produced by the students of the Rothberg
School. The opinions contained herein do not in any way, shape or form, reflect
the opimons of the staff or administration of the Rothberg School.

ISRAEL: A SMALL GREAT’NATION
Israel. One can hardly read a newspaper today without seeing the name
“Israel” written on its pages. At the same time, Israel’s name is found in
major scientific magazines the world over. In the former, usually criticized
and condemned. In the latter, mostly admired for its achievements.
The general impression is that of a huge country. Yet, Israel is so small that
there is almost no room to write its name on its surface in the atlas of the
world, as the well-known Israeli writer Ephraim Kshon once put it.
The Jewish State, the land of a nation reborn in its home after centuries in
which it was scattered across the world has, managed to make the desert
flourish and thus created a blanket of green over the previously desert region.
Its military victories - all in wars that were imposed upon it and in which it
was outnumbered by its foes - as well as the daring and risky operations of its
secret service provided it with an outstanding international reputation. Israel
is a country that puts satellites in orbit while its Rabbis dance and celebrate
the Torah during certain festivals within the Jewish tradition.
Israel’s contribution to the sciences, the arts and the field of ecology, to name
but one, is immeasurable. And all this within the context of the six wars
Israel has had to fight in less than 50 years.
Israel is a tiny democracy in an ocean of tyrannies. What is more, it is a
thriving democracy stuck in the middle of a neighborhood in which military
power remains critical to survival, and modernity is still considered a threat
rather than the object of one’s aspirations. Israel is a nation that has to stay
alert both day and night in its attempt to curb terrorism. And it is precisely
the nature of the reality that Israel faces daily which highlights the peculiarity
of Israel’s situation: while it sends its diplomats to negotiate peace, it must
also send its soldiers to defend its boundaries. Nonetheless, despite
unprecedentedly severe waves of terrorism and the hard wars Israel has
undergone, it has never given up its longing for peace.
The quest for peace and freedom of this young - and at the same time ancient
- nation can be summarized in the last words of Israel’s national hymn,
Hatikva (Hope): “Lehiyot ‘am khofshi beartzeinu, eretz Zion,
Yerushaliyim.”
Julian Schvindlerman

“Peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your
palaces.” (Psalm 122:7)
^How shall we sing the Lord’s song In a foreign land?
If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I remember thee not;
If I set not Jerusalem above my chiefest joy! (Psalm 137)

It’s been a crazy year here in Israel and as it draws to a close one’s
mind is filled with so many seemingly ‘unforgettable moments.’
However, the mind, being what it is, all too often allows these
memories to fade and so, to keep this from happening, we have tried
to compile a book that will jolt your memory. Hopefully it will
remind you of all the exciting and wonderful experiences you have
enjoyed (or didn’t as the case may be) whilst you were here.
Israel has experienced a tumultuous year, and capturing its
essential elements within this book has, unsurprisingly, been a
demanding task. Nonetheless, the yearbook team have done their
best to present you with an overview of your year as a whole and we
hope that this will help you remember how special it has been. May
you return to Israel soon and, in the meantime, browse through these
pages lest you forget how much this country has to offer.
Putting this yearbook together could not have been possible
without the help of Donovan and Yaelle, who both spent hours with
me into the night trying to get the book ready on time, Orit who
helped a great deal with compiling information, and Josh whose
photographs are interspersed throughout the book. So a big thank
you to all of them, and as you skim the pages you too will appreciate
all their work.

LETTER FROM THE. PRESIDENT' OF BEDS
(BODY UNDER THE DIRECTIVE OF STUDENTS)
'Well, it has finally ended! The year everyone looked so forward to; planned so
excessively for; dreamt so long about; “sacrificed” so much back home for. We left our
families, friends, cars, televisions, heat, hot water, air conditioning, and yes,
unfortunately OUR COMPUTERS to study in Jerusalem, Israel for a year.
Though often studying was not commonplace, most did get a little bit done. What was
gained though, was more than just a formal academic education; what you learned this
year you will keep with you for the rest of your lives. You will all return different
people. Hopefully, you will have the chance to reflect on all the good times: those
“wonderful” parties at the Orient Express, or those nights down at The Rock Bar.
Everyone stuffed their faces with falafel and shawarma, humous and tehina, pitas and
!laffas.
The most important thing is that you keep these memories with you. But don’t just hold
1them, share them with everyone. Convince other people to endeavor to experience a year
in Israel. Whether you found Israel beautiful religiously, culturally, socially, politically,
or spiritually, share that aspect which touched you most. Keep with you all of the
negative and often untrue things you heard in the media and make it a point to keep
educated with the goings-on. Most importantly, be active!
B.U.D.S. will be disbanded soon. For us, the year was extremely positive. We helped
complement the myriad events being planned by organizing speakers, sporting events,
educating people about the environment, planning social gatherings, and sharing religious
celebrations. If you did Hanukkah or the Super Bowl, or cleaned up and recycled know
that you helped contribute to something positive. Our work hasn’t even begun yet,
though. We are still planning lectures, movies, T-shirts and a final social event. Our one
greatest pride, so far is getting the administration to invest some hundreds of thousands
of dollars in communications and computers for Goldsmith (this will be one of the last
years for our building as the Rothberg School for Overseas Students).
Finally, please make it a point to cherish what you have gained here. And though we are
all closing a chapter on our year in Israel, we are all opening the book of life. Everyone
can use what he or she had here back home.
L’hltraot
[E'ukm fiw m i
P.S. I will always be around, should any of you need something. You can find my
parents or me. I will always try my best to help you.______

The Rothberg School student government (BUDS) has faced
a number of difficulties throughout the year, in particular
those caused by substantial duplication of roles between
BUDS and OSA, though a lack of promising venues, our
minute budget and student apathy haven’t helped greatly
either. We have nonetheless succeeded in organizing a
number of lectures, parties and sporting events, and, more
significantly, done what we could to ameliorate the situation
with regard to the chronic lack of access to email facilities to
Rothberg students. A new computer room has at last been
opened, despite the university administration’s considerable
reluctance to invest in the Goldsmith building (due to
become obsolete in the near future,) and this is thanks in part
to our conveying to those concerned the depth of feeling on
this issue, and pressing hard for action to be taken. To end on
a personal note, I’d like to thank those who have worked with
Brian and myself for all the effort that they’ve put into
making this year enjoyable for the overseas students.
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT.
‘See to it that you do not spoil and destroy My world
for if you do not there will be no one else to repair
it.” (Midrash - Ecclesiastes Rabah 1, 7:13).
This year marked the addition of a new committee to
BUDS the Rothberg School Student
Government...the Environmental Committee! From
tree plantings, demonstrations, clean ups and
environmental fairs to “earth mugs,” this dedicated
group of students inspired the Overseas School to
make Israel a little bit greener. In a state that is still in
the process of becoming environmentally aware, we/
encourage future overseas students to get involved
and keep up the good work!
Instead o f BUDS, maybe we should have called
ourselves IBN : Israeli Bureaucracy in a
Nutshell. The first thing we learnt was that
organizing an event in Israel demands one’s
putting all manners aside; plans in this country
seem to be made only so that they can then be
changed, and being polite doesn’t get you
anywhere. Even so, it has been interesting, albeit
frustrating, to take a look behind the scenes of|
student life in Israel and, without being too rude,
we have managed to successfully bring about
some events. I ’m sure none o f us will ever forget
all those parties at the Hyatt!
As the sports chairperson, I have done my best
this year to encourage students to put down their
books and venture out into the, at times, bracing
air. To this end, both football and squash leagues
have been organized. Students participated
enthusiastically in these activities, on both the
Har Hatzofim and Givat Ram campuses. We also
arranged a basketball three on three tournament
that took place in mid-May. In general, we have
tried to inspire students to utilize the sports
facilities, such as the gym and the Givat Ram
Iswimming pool, in their free time. With the onset
Iof summer, people are beginning to crawl out of
the woodwork and onto the tennis courts.

To summarize in a few sentences our expectations, anticipations, anxieties and sweat that
went into planning your experience here in Israel and at the University would be to give a
new meaning to the phrase, “Short and Sweet.” A year, even a semester, is a long period
of time to spend in a foreign country, learning both strange and familiar, and living
among people of a different culture who are still so “close to home.”
We hope that when you look back you will find that during the time you spent on this
side of the world you did and learnt a lot - you saw, and more importantly, lived in Israel,
and became more familiar with this society that is so prominent in the eyes of the world.
You had a chance to roam and hike the country, seeing...and absorbing memories and
feelings that you will hopefully cherish and share on your return home. With any luck,
during your stay in Israel, you found the answers to many of the questions that you have,
during these influential years of your lives, asked yourselves about yourselves, and now
you go back home with a new package of experiences which also must include new
unanswered questions about your identity, and your past, and your future.
But wherever the path upon which you began here in Israel may lead you, we urge and
hope that you keep with you the memories you accumulated here in a special place in you
heart, and pull them out to look over again and again every once in a while so you don’t
forget... for all of us (and we speak for both ourselves and for the madrichim) have fond
memories from the whole year on account of you.
Thanks for joining us this year. We sincerely hope to see you again in the future, either at
the university later on in your studies, or in the now familiar streets of Jerusalem._______
STUDENT GOVERNMENT ELECTION DEBATE
The evening began almost casually with the candidates, madrichim and various
students chatting over cookies and drinks provided by OSA. MC Dan Messinger got
things rolling with his dubious taste in corny jokes, orchestrating the events of the
night with a light and deft touch.
Since most candidates were unopposed they simply stated their platforms and retired
with requests for suggestions. The actual competition of the evening took place in two
stages, the Vice and then the Chairperson’s debates. "Bunn’s Bunch," namely Brian
Bunn, running for Chairperson, and Donovan Ingram, for Vice-Chairperson, had a
well organised platform and made strong speeches. Both exuded confidence and gave
the impression that they possessed suitable experience (in Bunn’s case work on
congressional campaigns, and prior contacts with Agudat Hastudentim, the JN F and
AIPAC) for the positions to which they sought to be elected. The opposing list, with
Heidi A rrat running for Chairperson and Jena M etten as her Vice-Chairperson, had
greater enthusiasm than confidence, and a less conclusive platform of their own. They
stressed their openness to suggestions from all quarters, and Arrat, to her credit, had
already done some administrative legwork in investigating which of a num ber of
proposed alterations and improvements were feasible and thus worth pursuing.
Both tickets have their strengths and their weaknesses, and it is still anyone’s guess as
to to who will win. All should however be commended for their enthusiasm and the
positive action they are prepared to take to try and ensure that this year is a pleasant
experience for everyone concerned.

So, you have spent a year or a semester in Israel. You have experienced a new country, a
new culture. You have been exposed to academic campus life at the Hebrew University,
and you have traveled throughout the country and abroad, so what next? What do you do
with your newly acquired experiences and knowledge? This is the real question and a
serious challenge.
It is not as easy as it may appear at first glance. It seems to me that anybody who views
the study abroad program as yet another adventure in a long list of :life experiences” is
missing a great deal. I would hope that any participant in one of our programs would
have gained an unparalleled perspective on life in general and on his or her life in
particular. The uniqueness of our programs lies in their location and the merger of
cultures, religions, politics and most importantly, people.
Undoubtedly, the richness of your experiences will only be fully realized after your return
to your home university. However, if as a result you have become a more caring, and
sensitive human being, an impartial judge of human behavior and an observer of
historical trends, then you have accomplished the goals of our programs.
Take time to examine the period spent here in Jerusalem. Remember us as providing you
with an opportunity to grow and understand. Remember us for what and where we are. I
am sure that this way we all can rest assured that your time here was well spent.
THE BEIT MIDRASH PROGRAM
Students from all over the world come to Hebrew University’s One Year Program for
many different reasons, but one thing all students have in common is the search for
answers about Judaism. Whether here for the year or only for the semester, from a dayschool
background or from hardly no Jewish background whatsoever, Jerusalem
summons the religious questions from within us. The Beit Midrash Program at Hecht
Synagogue tries and helps students answer some of these questions. However, the Beit
Midrash Program is more than just an organization with answers; it provides an amiable
atmosphere for one-on-one tutoring - “chavruta,” with a knowledgeable tutor. Each
chavruta is different because the student chooses the topic that he/she wants to study. The
studies range from “Who is G-d,” and “Why different sects of Jews dress differently,” to
the study of the mysticism of the Zohar and intense philosophical debates within the oral
tradition - Gemara.
I personally had an excellent tutor who became a very good friend. We began the year
with the study of the High Holidays for a couple of weeks and then turned our attention to
the laws of Shabbat. With the help of a text, we researched how the laws - halachot, of
Shabbat were derived from the oral tradition and those from the Torah. My chavruta,
Moshe Lambert, would always try to help me find the answers to my questions,
regardless of how simple or off the tangent they were. He would also call me at home to
talk and would always encourage me to call him if I had any pressing questions that
couldn’t wait to our weekly Monday night meetings. The Beit Midrash Program may not
have provided me with all the answers, but it has helped me develop the basic tools with
which to find my own answers and^grow from them.
The Butterfly,
The last, the very last,
So richly, brightly, dazzling yellow.
Perhaps if the sun’s tears would sing
against the white stone...
Such, such a yellow
Is carried lightly away up high
It went away I’m sure because it wished to
kiss the world goodbye.
For seven weeks I’ve lived in here,
Penned up inside this ghetto
But I have found my people here.
The dandelions call to me
And the white chestnut candles in the court.
Only I never saw another butterfly.
That butterfly was the last one.
Butterflies don’t live in here,
Operation Pesach.
Question: W hat’s the most meaningful way to spent your Pesach?
Answer: Fly to Kiev, take a ten-hour ride in a little red bus filled with
matzot, wine, and haggadot to the villages in the Pale o f western
Ukraine. Go to school rooms, bams, gymnasiums, and broken old
synagogues and lead Seders - one or two a day for four days - for Jews
who have fallen victim and miraculously survived the two most
oppressive regimes o f the century: the Nazis, who savagely killed their
families, and the Communists, who stole their Judaism.
It may sound implausible but that is exactly what twenty five o f my
class-mates from the Rothberg School for Overseas Students at the
Hebrew University o f Jerusalem and I did this past Pesach. We
participated in a special Pesach Project co-sponsored by the United
Jewish Appeal, Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life and the
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which provided us
with the challenge and opportunity to bring Jewish life to a place where
a once dominant Jewish spirit has been dead, not to mention illegal, for
nearly seventy years. Before I begin, I must say that the Jews we met in
the Ukraine deserve a great deal o f respect. After all the years o f
hiding, most Jewish tradition and thought were forgotten. These
people are making concerted efforts to bring Judaism back into their
world.

I had amazing and touching experiences during my Jewish adventures
through the Ukraine. A McGill University student from Toronto, I
traveled with two American Hillel students and three Ukranian Jewish
Hillel students. Our second Seder was in Dragobych. This small village
was a once thriving Jewish community, but now only houses remain.
There are merely one hundred and seventy-five Jews left, most o f
whom are senior citizens. As I looked at the rural country faces in the
Seder 1 saw many tears drawn by both reminiscent thoughts o f pre-war
days and the excitement o f seeing Jewish life coming from the outside.
The younger faces were mostly blank, never having attended the Seder
before. Staring at these faces, I realized that had my grandparents not
moved to Canada, they, and possibly I, could be among the faces. What
separates us is, at most, three generations.
We brought the few kids on stage and taught them to sing the “Ma
Nishtana” (the four questions.) The Seder is the time for asking
questions - something many Jews from the former Soviet Union have a
lot of. A few minutes later I met an old man who told me he was in the
Krakow concentration camp, and later in the Plashow camp, where he
m et Oskar Schindler. He pulled out an old violin and played the
“Hatikvah” for us - the Israeli national anthem which speaks about
Jewish hope. All o f the sixty Seder participants stood, most hearing this
tune for the first time. My two American partners sang with all our
hearts and souls to these people, understanding that our Seder helped
the 3000 year-old light o f Judaism to reappear within Ukrainian Jewry.
D ear Rosie,
M y m om usually calls every m orning
at 9am to w ake m e up. It is now 9:05
and she still has not rung. D oes she
still love m e? I am w orried that her
new M aster B lender 10,000 deluxe
has taken m y place in her heart...
I have thought long and hard about
your dilemma. Your parents no
doubt sent you to Israel with good
reason. Invest in an alarm clock,
sweetheart, and consider making
aliya!
D ear R osie,
I am starting to feel as though I cam e to Israel to run aw ay from m y parents,
and I am not sure that m y reasons for com ing here w ere right.
And your problem is?...
D ear R osie,
I am having m ajor problem s w ith m y Israeli room -m ate. She keeps taking my
food from the fridge, and th a t’s ju st the beginning o f it. N othing is sacred!
She uses all m y things w ithout asking perm ission. W hat should I do? M y
boyfriend says th at I should stop food shopping and eat out from now on.
Just be glad that she hasn’t taken your boyfriend from your bed! You’re
unlikely to starve while there’s a Burger King in tow n...

D ear Rosie,
I can ’t stop thinking about those luxuries I ’ve left behind in A m erica, the
Jacuzzi, the C adillac, and the indoor sw im m ing pool to nam e but a few . I ’m
not sure that I can adjust to the prim itive w ay people live here. W hat should I
do? By the w ay, my nails are in com plete disarray, do you know o f a good
m anicurist?
My child, you are a typical product of America. It is about time that
someone put you in your place and pointed out just how spoilt a brat you
are. Many before you have survived this ‘primitive’ lifestyle, and I‘m
sure that you too can manage if you just put your mind to it. As for your
nails, cut them all off, it’s so much easier in the long run. W hen you
return to America you can always buy fake ones to replace them!
D ear Rosie,
I am w orried that the people here don’t like m e. N obody talks to m e and,
w hen they do, th ey ’re rude. W hat am I doing w rong? I try to keep a sm ile on
m y face, but it doesn’t seem to help. W hat should I do?
It’s time to stop smiling and get physical. In this world, elbows are
always more persuasive than the niceties of life.
D ear Rosie,
I am having problem s w ith the public services in this country. W henever I go
to an office I never get the inform ation that I need. Instead I leave w ith a
m igraine and aching feet. H ow does one cope w ith the bureacracy in this
country?
What bureacracy? Sweetheart, get yourself some aspirin, get yourself a
pair of walking shoes, and get used to it!

D ear R osie,
I am seeing an Israeli guy, a French guy, an E nglish guy, a R ussian guy and
an A m erican guy, all at the sam e tim e. It’s horribly confusing w ith all the
different languages and nam es, not to m ention the fact that I can never seem
to w ake up in tim e for ulpan in the m orning! W hat should I do?
You mean you talk to your boyfriends? No wonder you’re troubled,
there’s a fundamental flaw in your technique! Don’t forget, the language
o f love is international, and, as for the small problem with their names,
just address them all as sweetheart. With so many men I‘m not surprised
you don’t have the energy for ulpan, good call!!!
D ear R osie,
Is there anybody w ho doesn’t sm oke in this country? W herever I go people
blow sm oke in m y face. I am suffering im m ensely from all this passive
rules here?
Don’t be stupid, this is Israel. But don’t be concerned, if you can’t beat
them, join them! Buy yourself a pack of fags and light up, sweetheart.
Gotta dash, I’m running low on Noblesse myself!
Life in the dorms is a good
opportunity for students
from around the globe to
congregate and meet in a
social,
‘home’
environment. Students
cook together, sing, talk
and interact in their rooms,
and in the halls....

Moving to Israel and into the dorms was a shock to the system! Coming from the
comforts of home into the not so luxurious dormitory on Har Hatzofim took a lot
of adjustment, that is still not quite complete! I have had to set my body clock
around the water heater and my sleep schedule around the people on the floor!
However, campus life has given me the opportunity to interact with students
from around the world, and after I became used to the fact that the food in the
fridge was communal and that there was no such thing as knocking on the door,
life became a bit easier. My room-mate and I have become very close, literally
being that we live in such a closed-in environment, but we are still managing to
smile at each other occasionally! Nonetheless, despite all this, the campus seems
heavenly compared to where we lived on Givat Ram over the summer. And now
I only have a five minute walk to classes!
Those of you who think you’ve been everywhere there is to go here may not realise
that you’ve missed out on one or two places. Abu Dis is a Palestinian village just
fifteen minutes from M ount Scopus in which a group of English students
(occasionally) attending classes at the Rothberg School have lived this past year.
According to Gus DellaPorta, one of the three students at Abu Dis, "It’s been a
thorough immersion in Palestinian life and culture. From the very beginning the
Palestinians welcomed us into the community, inviting us to their weddings, family
celebrations and Muslim festivals, not to mention the local gym and pool hall." Says
Gus, "Our parties, which resulted in some wild Palestinian dancing and the
consumption of vast amounts of alcohol, didn’t meet with complete approval from our
neighbours, but we were soon forgiven. I’ve made many friends, met some extremely
generous and decent people, and will be sad when I have to leave Abu Dis."

POLITICS IN GOLDSMITH 1996-1997
As one would expect, both the affairs of the student union and political life in general at the
Hebrew University are colorful. Three student parties are in permanent competition for
control of the Student Union. Meretz, with ties to the eponymous political party, is interested
in the main in political and social issues in general, and only to a lesser extent in concerns
specific to students. On the other hand, Ofek (Avoda) and Gilad Aviv (Likud) state that they
are concerned first and foremost with the management of the Student Union.
Paradoxically, at least upon first inspection, Gilad Aviv has held power at the university for
five years, from 1991-1996, even though two thirds of the students are more or less left-wing.
To tell the truth, the Union, during this period, has worked better than ever before,
diversifying and expanding the range of services it offers. Ofek and Meretz seek in general to
politicize debate, aware o f the advantage that they hold on this terrain. Indeed in 1996, a year
of elections, they succeeded in this strategy, particularly since the university elections took
place five days after those for the Knesset.
The Goldsmith building is generally ignored by all this activity on the part of representatives
of the Student Union. This has been especially true this year, leading to low uptake of
membership in the Student Union by foreign students. Only the representatives of Gilad Aviv
have put in time there, organizing inter alia a trip to Hebron, and, above all, collecting
signatures for a petition which has led to the opening of a new computer room for email. The
overseas students, however, many of whom are in Israel only for a year, are not of necessity
particularly interested in the affairs of the Student Union.
Nonetheless the business of “Barry Chamesh” aroused the consternation of many students
concerned with freedom of expression and scandalized by unwarranted violence. So as to
impede the Canadian journalist from airing his theory, according to which the Israeli secret
services murdered Yitzhak Rabm, the militant activists of Meretz and Ofek organized a
particularly violent demonstration which resulted in two members of university security being
sent to hospital.
Hopefully this event, which has placed Goldsmith in the media spotlight, will remain an
unfortunate anomaly. Student life in Israel is given to polemic, but, most of the time, this does
not spill over into violence. _ . T , ,
Benjamin Lachkar
Political activity in Goldsmith this year has been remarkable, mainly for its paucity or
rather, by the minimal importance given to Goldsmith by the official Student Union. This
Student Union, under the control of Ofek-Meretz, has done surprisingly little to improve
the life of students on campus. In Goldsmith, this was reflected by absolutely no specific
activities being organized for overseas students , and by the organization of one activity
which revealed the chaotic nature of the Union. A supposedly peaceful demonstration
against a journalist speaking about the Rabin assassination was turned into a violent
protest in which two security guards were sent to hospital and university property
seriously damaged. Acting as the political opposition to the Ofek-Meretz alignment,
Gilad-Aviv has proved on numerous occasions that it is a truly organized and efficient
student interest group. Throughout the year they have organized various trips (Hebron,
Knesset), lectures (Ehud Olmert), and services (bus timetables, opening of a computer
room in association with BUDS). All this was done whilst Gilad-Aviv were in
opposition, without access to the student Unions budget.
This year of Ofek-Meretz power has therefore made clear to everyone their inefficiency.
Hopefully next year the political situation will be reversed, and overseas students will be
able to benefit from the Student Union.
l’Universite a l’hopital.
Ce derapage, qui a place le batiment Goldsmith sous les feux des media, est
reste bien heureusem ent une triste exception. La vie etudiante israelienne aime par
dessus tout la polemique mais reste le plus souvent bon enfant.
I would have liked to have been able to write an article about the content of this
lecture, but the downright stupid and shocking behaviour of various Ofeq and M eretz
students protesting against the speaker, Barry Chamesh, has left me unable to do so.
The employment of violence, which resulted in windows being broken and two
security guards requiring treatm ent in hospital, enabled the protestors to achieve their
stated objective, having the lecture postponed, but at the cost of their reputation as
champions of free speech and democracy. A fter all, who can convincingly argue they
stand for such values (even if shouting democratic slogans over a m egaphone) whilst
blocking entrance to a public event, brandishing torches, and threatening anyone
showing the slightest interest in hearing what the lecturer has to say with physical
violence? Protesting in this m anner not only did the reputation of Ofeq and Meretz,
both on and off-campus, a great deal of harm in the eyes of all those who consider
themselves capable of exercising their own judgem ent on contentious matters, it also,
ironically, brought much greater publicity to the issue than it would otherwise have
gained. A nother time, perhaps, should they wish to argue against the conclusions
drawn by the lecturer, they’ll at least show sufficient common sense and decency to
listen to him first!
Rothberg School students, outraged by the recent homophobic comments by
the President of Israel, turned up in their masses to attend a question and
answer session at his house in Rehavia. Speaking in front ofanlsraeli school,
the day prior to the trip, the President had spoken of his perceived notion of
the religious and moral wrongs of homosexuality. His remarks incited much
outrage and invited much critical abuse from the Overseas Students, curious
to see how he would justify his attitude. However, homosexuality, while the
focus of many questions was not the sole topic for debate with Weizmann.
People were curious to know what his role was in the country in addition to
what his personal political stance was. He spoke briefly at the onset of the
meeting about his family history, and his ascendance from a British pilot to
the President of Israel. Directly after his speech the student government
president, Brian Bunn, also saw the necessity to give an equally long sermon,
following which many students were given the opportunity to speak about
their personal concerns.
A Memorial to Yitzhak Rabin.
When I heard about the murder of Yitzhak Rabin, I sat, motionless for a very long time.
A Jew that lives in Diaspora can only know what he is told by the news, and so we had to
learn about what happened to Rabin through the information that we gained from them.
But Rabin’s greatness exceeded that which the news shared with us. Today I want to
remember Rabin as the man those closely acquainted with him knew him. They knew
and loved him as the man who contributed a lot to the country prior to the existence of
the State of Israel. He was a hero of politics. Rabin was truly a great man as he had the
power to make way for peace. He was like a father who couldn’t bare to see his children
suffer. As Rabin said in Washington: “It’s not easy for families to live with violence,
terror and war, and the pain never heals. We must try and stop the hatred so that our
children, and our children’s children will not have to live in a state of war. We came to
promise their lives and to release the sadness and the painful memories of the past and to
pray for peace.”
Rabin did not just speak of peace, he dedicated his life to its pursuit.. Not only Israelis
and Arabs, but all the world will sit and see Rabin as a leader that was a symbol of peace
in the Middle East. He was very close to seeing his dream come true, and today we must
remember that Rabin gave his life to the fulfillment of this goal. I think that what would
please Rabin as he watches over us from above, would be that people and leaders should
continue what he began and we should fight, like he fought, for peace. I also think that as
students we have a responsibility to remember Rabin, and what he represented.
Sometimes it is easy to forget and to return to a state of war and violence, in honor of
Rabin we must not dessert and forget the dream that he had. His dream will allow the
youngsters that sit here today, to one day live in a country at peace. I want to end by
PERES
Shimon Peres, the former Prime Minister o f Israel, spoke to one-year-program
students at the request o f Beit Hillel and the Agudat Hastudentim. Hundreds of
students, waiting in line for good seats, battled the wind to enter the Truman
building on a cold Monday evening, March 3rd.
The bitter weather couldn’t dampen the air of excitement within that grew
palpably as the students entered and awaited Peres’ arrival (he arrived an hour late
- true to Israeli Standard Time). Students expected a speech followed by a
question and answer session; surprisingly only the latter occurred. Many questions
were addressed to the former Prime Minister by representatives of all shades o f the
political spectrum. The first question dealt with the day’s unsuccessful attempt by
several political parties to get a vote o f no-confidence in Bibi Netanyahu’s
government passed. The remainder o f the questions focused on every conceivable
political issue: Har Homa, Final Status negotiations, the political and religious
future o f Jerusalem, the likelihood of a National Unity government and Israel’s
negotiating “partner,” the P.L.O.
A discernible difference was noticed by many in the audience, prompting one
student to com m ent, “If only Peres had spoken with that amount o f confidence a
year ago, the current government would not now be in power, nor in its present
predicam ent.” One cannot help but recall how a year
previously it seemed that Israel could do no wrong;
now, despite many people having stated that Bibi’s
government is, more or less, at the same place as the
Peres government a year before, it is castigated for
following the Declaration of Principles.
Irrespective o f the students’ political views, all
received exactly that for which they came: to see
Shimon Peres, the former Prime Minister and current
opposition leader from the Labor party, answer tough
political questions about the future of his party,
negotiations with the Palestinians, the peace process,
and, ultimately, the fate and future o f Israel. The
event was an overwhelming success and one man
remained the chief subject o f discussion for a long
while after the Truman Institute, filled to near
capacity, was vacated: Shimon Peres.
Chick - Shlomo Artzi
My chicks left the nest
Spread their wings and flew
And I’m an old bird left behind
And i hope very much everything will be O.K.
I always knew the day would come
When we would separate
But now it comes to me suddenly
So what a surprise that I am a little worried
Fly, chick
Cut the sky
Fly wherever you want
Just don’t forget
There is a hawk in the sky
— for you
Now we are left alone in the nest
But we are together
Hug me hard and tell me yes,
Don’t worry, it’s fun to get old together
Fly, chick.
I know that it’s like this in nature
And I also left a nest
But now when the moment is here
It’s a little strangling in the throat
Palestinian officials said the
YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’RE IN ISRAEL WHEN...
You cross the street and a car purposely speeds up and honks only when you have gotten
Everybody in the restaurant in which you’re eating has a “pelephone”, but had to take
An old lady will physically assault you to get on the bus, and you find yourself actually
Any time you go to the bank or the post office they are closed.
You have to organize your day around going to the bank or the post office.
You have to scream at the driver to stop long enough for everyone to get off the bus.
The “hafsaka” in the movie is in the middle of the climax.
You go to someone’s house and they feed you until your pants :
You find twenty relatives you never knew you had.
Students will always remember their exciting
nights in the Jerusalem clubs, from the Hyatt
and the Baraton on Har Hatzofim, to the
Underground and Arizona in town. The images
of being cajoled by a soldier’s gun on the
dance floor or being chatted up by a Yeshiva
student with his kippot on will remain vivid.
Plus the memory of the same music playing in
different clubs all year, usually in the same
sequence, is unforgettable. However, for those
who were not involved in the club ‘scene’,
there were many cafes and bars to while away
the evenings hours in, from the Rock Bar to
the Blue Hole to name but a couple.
“M y alcohol intake has more than doubled over the last fo u r years,
a n d the President has done precious little to p rev en t it. ”

Wandering down Ben Yehuda, one may well be confused as
to whether they are in Israel, or have in fact entered the
world of America.....when the palette cannot cope with
anymore fallafel, or is having problems with the Middle
Eastern flavor of food, there is such a selection of tastes
from home that you may sometimes feel that you have
entered ‘little America’! With the selection ranging from
Pizza Hut to Dunkin’ Donuts, all Israel needs now to be just
like ‘home’ is the advent of the drive-thru’s, and you will
quickly forget which continent you are in!
Rebecca Weinstein

The buses in Israel are an experience in
themselves. Anyone who has made the
mistake o f standing in line should have
quickly learnt that this is not the best way to
guarantee a spot on the bus. As the hordes
elbow their way onto the buses be prepared
for grandmothers swinging their handbags
violently and children wriggling through
your legs. And now that summer is here,
you will soon learn that a can o f deoderant
is a necessity for combatting the stench that
accompanies even the shortest o f rides!
Getting used to the segregation o f men and
women on the buses comes with time, but
everyone soon grasps the fact that religion
is prevalent here, even on the buses.

Most students departed from their respective cities, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Ber Sheva,
not knowing quite what to expect. Having been asked to put on blindfolds prior to our
arrival for the opening activities at the Flour Caves, I began to wonder seriously just what
I was letting myself in for. It did cross my mind that, should the bus plunge over a
precipice, investigators would examine the wreckage and conclude that the accident was
the consequence of a bizarre suicide pact.
Fifteen minutes sitting in near silence, deprived of sight, able to hear nothing but the roar
of the engine as our bus climbed up into the desert foothills, gave us a chance to examine
our motives for getting involved in this series of weekend seminars. Led off the buses
quite literally still in the dark, we were finally allowed to remove our blindfolds. The
stark beauty of the stars and desert under a waxing moon couldn’t fail to remind us that
there is more to life than our mundane commitments and concerns as students. Perhaps
most important of all, the opening ceremony, which, strictly speaking, should have been
described as a disorientation activity, served to break up the groups that had, naturally
enough, already formed on the basis of prior acquaintance, however tenuous, and helped
us to get on with the business of making new friends.
Though for some the prospect of a much needed break from claustrophobic Jerusalem
may have been sufficient, the primary reason for my participating in Academeet had to

do with a complaint with which anyone who has studied abroad may be all too familiar
Isolated in the American (at best this description can be broadened to non-Israeli)
ghetto that is the Rothberg School for Overseas Students, and unsure of the logic in
investing so much of my time in learning Hebrew when I scarcely spoke it except to
other foreign students, I felt it was about time I got to meet that surprisingly rare
commodity, the Israeli. For the writer, one of a handful of non-Jews present, the question
of Jewish identity, the principal theme under discussion over the weekend, could hardly
have been termed a burning issue, but it’s nonetheless true that I understood Israel and
its people a little better by its end.
Three adjectives summarize my experience of Academeet thus far: intense, enjoyable,
and, in a positive sense, confrontational. The weekend brought us together to challenge
each others complacencies and learn about ourselves. Guest lecturer, Dr. David Scher of
Tel Aviv University, introduced the main topic of discussion, but wisely did not attempt
to present us with a definition of Jewish identity. Indeed, to my mind, the extent to which
progress was made over the weekend towards resolving this issue is in fact largely
irrelevant. People will in any case, I believe, go away and think about matters of this
nature of their own volition. More importantly, for me at least, the seeds of many
friendships were sown amongst those who, in the normal run of events, would have been
unlikely to meet.
There were of course one or two trying moments during the weekend. It soon became
clear that, unsurprisingly, it was at times impossible to keep our political differences from
intruding upon and polarizing the debate, and that in moving on swiftly to avoid

contentious issues one ran the risk of making the whole discussion superfluous. The
barbecue supper on the first evening might have been better received had it materialized a
little earlier than two in the morning....I’m sure nonetheless that those who take a moment
to consider the sheer logistics of organizing a weekend away for nearly one hundred
people will find it in their hearts to forgive the bold (some would say foolhardy) team of
students that took such an endeavor upon themselves. It’s a terrible shame that they
couldn t do anything about the worst part of the weekend - having to return to the real
world afterwards.
Israel has turned out to be all that I had expected and
more. One of the best things that I could have done was to
do an internship with Machon Masa. Not only has it
allowed me to have an off-campus experience, it has also
allowed me to meet prestigious members of the
community, gain experience in public speaking, publicity
and computers.
Israel has also given me the opportunity to grow as a
person. As my year comes to a close I can see the
differences within myself from when I first arrived.
Traveling and living in a different country has brought
about significant changes in my life and in the way that I
look at the world. Returning home (and to school) will
truly be a test as to how much I have grown. Seven months
ago I was scared to leave, and now I am just as scared to
return. Life works in mysterious ways.
Volunteer Statement
When I first decided to volunteer for Avnet I had no idea I would be gaining
such an incredible experience. Every week I take a bus for forty-five minutes to go
and visit a seven year old boy who’s sister was killed tragically by a bomb explosion
two years ago. When I walk into the door o f his house he greets me with a smile and a
hug. His parents also welcome me with open arms. For the few hours a week that I
spend with this child I feel almost like a hero. When I began the visits I was nervous
and so were the child and his parents. Furthermore, the mother was still heavily
burdened with loss o f her daughter. As the weeks passed I slowly began to see a great
change in the family’s spirit. They were happier and even proud that I befriended their
only son. He calls me his “best friend”. The feeling o f warmth and appreciation I
receive for my volunteer work is overwhelming. The truth is that it is not ‘work’ for
me. It is more like an adventure that I embark upon every week and one which I look
very forward to each time. The most satisfying part of volunteering, for me, is the fact
that I am able to touch the heart o f someone who is in need of a friend. There are
really no other jobs that are as rewarding as this one. After every visit I spend my
forty-five minute bus ride thinking about how much o f a difference I have made to one
little boy. The only real sad part is that when my classes finish I will have to say goodbye
to my youngest friend and only hope to see him again in the future, if and when, I
return to Israel.
Conference at the beginning o f the year
It is often hard for people to express the extent of their thanks
for the help they receive from volunteers. So I want to to tell
you on their behalf that the work you have done, whether it
was physically demanding or just sitting down to talk with
someone (which can, incidentally, be just as tiring), is
important, and that you have made a difference. It has been a
pleasure working with you, and, thank you so much for all
you’ve done.______________________ j oy Sadis ______

Schnitzel! is Hebrew University’s English comedy group. Formed late in the second semester,
Schnitzel! features: Rich Rapkin, Jeremy Shinewald, Marc Rosenburg, Eli Savage and Dan
Messinger. Basically, these were five guys who were having trouble getting girls, so they said,
“Hey, let’s do a show where we can blatantly advertise the fact that we are available, and
maybe that will help!”. The rest is history....
Schintzel! put on two shows at Hebrew University and at the time that this was written,
planned on doing a show at Tel Aviv University. Schnitzel! has raised over 1500 shekels for
tzedakah, including Hadassah Hospital, a school for special needs children in Jerusalem, and a
fund in memory of one o f the soldiers killed in February’s helicopter accident. Their goal is
“to get chicks!”, but if you laughed, that’s good too!

Hey, where’s the microwave?

It was during the summer ulpan that Jello began. Five students, from
four countries, got together to organize Jewish flavored activities run
by the students for the students. Guilia Miller, Richard Rabkin, Tanya
Shapiro, Joel Tannenbaum and Emily Tannenberg were the faces
behind the scenes - and very often, in front o f them too!
So eager were we to get started that we ran an activity before Jello had
been officially launched. The Friday the 18th Dinner! More than 50
students joined us at the Hecht Synagogue lobby for a catered shabbat
dinner o f eating, singing and story telling. The event was such a
success that we decided to go ahead with our plans for the official Jello
launch: The Big Jello Mystery.
A busload o f unsuspecting, curious Rothberg students were taken into
the dark Judean desert where they began a moonlight hike. Just as the
majority were beginning to get annoyed, but just before they began
threatening Jello members, the hike was stopped to listen to a shiur by
Rabbi Danny. But that was just the beginning, because at the top o f the

hill were Brad Shachter and his band waiting for their cue to get the
party started. We spent a wonderful evening enjoying the music,
dancing, atmosphere and......Jello!
Jello continued to run activities and programs during the course o f the
year, including another Shabbat dinner, two Jello LITES, Jewish
Leadership Seminars and even arranged for Rothberg students to
deliver M ishloach M anot to an old ae home on Purim.
For those o f you who may be wondering what Jello stands for, it’s
simply: Jews Experiencing, Living and Learning Overseas. And, true to
what the name implies, that’s exactly what Jello did.

With Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the East, Egypt to the southwest and the
Israel is both a land and a people. The history of the Jewish people and of its roots in the land of Israel spans
some 35 centuries. With the establishment of the state of Israel on May 14th, 1948, Jewish sovereignty was
regained. It is known to many as “Eretz Yisroel” (The Land of Israel); Zion - (one of Jerusalem's hills - the name
has come to signify both Jerusalem and the Land of Israel); but to Israelis themselves, however, the country is
simply called HaEretz (the
Land).
More than five
live in Israel
today. The
majority are
Villages of various sizes are inhabited by Arabs and Druze who comprise a quarter of the rural population. Land
Israel enjoys a tropical climate. The temperature ranges from temperate to tropical with sunshine prevalent
throughout the year. There are but two truly distinct seasons, a rainy winter period and a dry summer season.
The national language is Hebrew, and the second official language Arabic, though in practice English is heard
