A WORD FROM OUR FOUNDERS
Founded in September 2016, The
KellyDeli Foundation set out with the
goal of supporting entrepreneurial
organisations and bold ideas that tackle
hunger and malnutrition, everywhere.
In a world where 795 million people do not
have enough to eat, a further billion suffer
from food related deficiencies, and 1.4
billion are overweight or obese, we knew
that we were going to have our work cut out. That
said, we're incredibly proud of what we've achieved in our first year
with the Kelly Deli Foundation.
Through our flagship initiative, The Good Kitchen, we've invested nearly
£200,000 in five social entrepreneurs with highly scalable, innovative ideas
to address food poverty worldwide. And through our Hungry for Change
programme, we're supporting amazing projects in some of the most
challenging environments in the world that build community resilience in
the face of food insecurity.
We are incredibly grateful for the support shown by our staff, trustees,
partner organisations, supporters, and the entrepreneurs shaking up the
food system. We want to say the biggest thanks to you all for helping to
build this movement. We hope this report inspires you to continue
working with us.
Thank you,
Jerome Castaing and Kelly Choi
| OUR INITIATIVES
Through the Kelly Deli Foundation, we have launched two initiatives to
help build a food system which is fit for purpose, and is providing a
healthy and sustainable diet to everyone, everywhere
Hungry for Change
The Hungry for Change initiative aims to support brilliant organisations who
deliver entrepreneurial food projects in post-conflict and refugee
situations. The initiative focuses on projects that help communities become
more resilient to changes in food security, provide employment and
training opportunities and generate a small amount of revenue to sustain
the project.
To date, we have supported two organisations through this initiative.
The Good Kitchen
The Foundation's flagship programme, The Good Kitchen is a business
accelerator that supports brilliant organisations working to solve food
poverty or food insecurity. The accelerator enables organisations to
address major challenges in the food system by providing startups with
funding, business training, and mentorship so more innovative ideas may
reach the market. The Good Kitchen grew out of hundreds of
conversations with charities, social enterprises, policy makers and
businesses who were all passionate about building a world where
everyone, everywhere had access to an adequate and sustainable diet.
To date, we have supported five organisations through this initiative.
| HUNGRY FOR CHANGE
| Happy Farm (Idlib, Syria)
Through the Hungry for Change initiative, we have partnered with the
Karam Foundation to construct an animal farm in Idlib, Syria, to provide
nutrition, employment and a community hub.
The project will provide will provide affordable food to around 15,000
people per year, employment for eight people, and agricultural & animal
husbandry training to many more. The farm generates a small amount of
revenue from selling the farm's products. Through this revenue, the farm
aims to become self-sustaining within 12 months and reinvest all the
profits into growing the farm.
| THE GOOD KITCHEN: WHY?
There are multiple reasons for the state of our broken food system: climate
change, warfare, politics to name a few. However, we believe there's another
huge reason: the overwhelming majority of our food system is owned by a
dangrously small handful of companies. Today, just six companies control
70% of the world’s seed market, four corporations control 75% of the global
grain market and 26% of global food markets is controlled by ten food
processing companies. The implication of that is a food system with little
incentive to change itself. As such, innovation within the food system has
been worryingly absent - particularly with regards to innovations that are
kind to the planet and our bodies.
Don't get us wrong, we are not anti-business. Quite the opposite. We believe
that truly sustainable businesses have the potential to help everyone,
everywhere have access to an adequate and sustainable diet. This is what
The Good Kitchen was set up to achieve. From smart farming to agroecology,
from food waste management systems to food education programmes, we
believe investing in high-risk, high-growth, innovative food social enterprises
has the potential for great social, environmental, and financial returns.
What is promising is that, in recent
years, the first shoots of innovation
have started to appear. The five
organisations who are part of The
Good Kitchen accelerator
programme are just the beginning.
Our investees are innovating in the
area of big data, food waste, and
alternative aquaculture feed to
name a few.
| THE YEAR AHEAD
It's been a great first year
at the Kelly Deli Foundation.
We've successfully
launched two initiatives and
laid the foundations for
great partnerships with the
likes of the World Food
Programme. The Good
Kitchen investees are going
from strength to strength,
with some of already raising
substantial further
investment.
But we are still a long way
from realising our mission
of ensuring that everyone,
everywhere has access to
an adequate and
sustainable diet. To bring
us closer to achieving this,
The KellyDeli
Foundation has identified
four key areas of
development for 2017-18
and beyond:
Global Reach
Our aim is to have a truly global reach; we want
to be delivering projects in areas of the highest
need, and where our money can go the
furthest.
Supporting Seed Ideas
We will support very early ideas that we think
have the potential to tackle food poverty.
We will provide office space, low levels of grant
funding, business training and mentorship to
help people explore brilliant ideas.
Sustainable Food Fund
We will partner with other foundations,
philanthropists & social investors to create a
"Sustainable Food Fund" which will provide
follow-on funding for promising graduates of
The Good Kitchen. Successful enterprises will
donate a percentage of their profits to the
Foundation to support the incoming cohort
Cooking Up Change
Cooking up Change is an enterprise programme
supporting people from low-income, immigrant,
and refugee communities to start a food
business. We'll provide these budding food
entrepreneurs with affordable kitchen space
and business training.
