ALL ABOARD: The cruise ship, MS Albatros, was in the East London port last week, and was one of the first luxury liners to dock here as the cruise season starts. The MS Albatros is a cruise ship, operated
by the Germany-based travel agency Phoenix Reisen. She was built in 1973 by Wärtsilä Helsinki New Shipyard, Finland for Royal Viking Line as Royal Viking Sea, and has also sailed under the names Royal
Odyssey, Norwegian Star, and Crown. She is the second Albatros for Phoenix Reisen as she was the replacement of the original SS Albatros
BCM, museum quit trying
to move whale carcass
MADELEINE CHAPUT
LAST week Friday, BCM
marine services, as well as
a team from the East
London Museum and
Border Towing, attempted
to winch the 18.4m sperm whale
carcass that washed up off the
Eastern Beach and tow it to the
tip site near King William's Town.
Removing the estimated 40-ton
carcass proved to be extremely
difficult as a team of 20 men and a
massive tow truck spent hours
fighting the tide and the wind in an
effort to remove the decomposing
body from the surf.
“We would have preferred to let
Mother Nature dispose of the
carcass, but the management of the
public is very difficult,” BCM's chief
of marine services Siani Tinley said.
“It is a huge health hazard to the
public and this being an open
public beach makes it very difficult
to keep people away,” Tinley said.
By 4pm on Friday, the team
halted all operations, leaving the
scene after failing to bring the
carcass out of the surf and onto the
flat-bed tow truck for
transpor tation.
East London Museum chief
scientist Kevin Cole was, however,
able to retrieve the animal's lower
jaw, as well as the white waxy oil
substance produced by the sperm
whale known as spermaceti in
order to run various tests.
“Those were two of our main
objectives, as well as removing the
carcass from the surf line. The other
was to investigate the whale's
stomach for any plastics, because
lately that has been causing many
problems within the sperm whale
species among other marine
mammals,” Cole said.
Under very difficult
circumstances, Cole and his team
were unable to investigate the
whale's stomach.
The carcass was left to float out
behind the surf line and has since
not been reported again.
The carcass is likely to sink to the
sea bed as sharks feed on it.
Playschool finally gets own home
MADELEINE CHAPUT
AFTER years of makeshift classrooms
and shared community spaces, the
Igxarha Creche has finally received its
very own school premises just outside
of Morgan’s Bay.
The playschool caters for non-paying
underprivileged children, with the
school run on the kind donations of the
broader community.
The brand new 8mx20m building,
consisting of two open-plan classrooms,
a kitchen, storeroom, toilets, and a
verandah was officially opened at a
vibrant celebration in front of 100
guests on November 2.
Made possible by various sponsors
around the world, the new building also
boasts a large playground area where
the children have access to swings, a
seesaw and tyres.
“This has been an ongoing project for
many, many years.
“We had little money so we built it by
faith, our motto being, ‘we can do all
things through Christ who strengthens
us’ from Philippians 4:13(NKLV),”
founder Sue Warren- Smith said.
The school, which was initially held in
an army tent, was started in 1999 and
moved around over the years until
finally sharing the Igxarha Community
Hall with the village.
The playschool’s previous premises
also included a rondavel and an old
boat house.
“We decided to build our school as
we wanted to have the building just for
the children and not to share it with the
communit y,” Warren-Smith said.
From building materials to financial
donations, various local and
international sponsors including
Builders Express EL, PG Glass, Morgan
Bay Hotel, McLean Bible Church USA,
and many other individuals came on
board to make Igxarha creche a reality.
“The generosity of people has been
amazing and we managed to carry on
and complete the building.
“Many folk have come down on
holiday and brought clothes, books and
toys and we do not have all the names
but their contributions have not gone
u n n ot i c e d , ” Warren-Smith said.
With a qualified principal and
assistant teacher, the school has big
plans to incorporate a training school
on the premises in the future.
Currently teachers are in training with
Khululeka Community Education
Development Centre in Queenstown.
Ixgara Creche fundraiser Debbie
Janse van Rensburg joined the school
in 2015 and has worked with Warren-
Smith to ensure the success of the
creche. She is also completing her
Khululeka Community Education
Development Centre training.
The Department of Social
Development has also come on board
and provides one teacher’s salary, food
for the children and classroom
equipment.
Fully geared for
safer silly season
Traffic officials will be out in full force
THANDEKA
N T LO N T I
BUFFALO City Metro has
officially opened this
year’s festive season.
The metro launched
the silly season with a
no-nonsense safety
season campaign which
consisted of a massive
roadblock at the top of
Oxford Street opposite
the War Memorial in
Southernwood.
Some motorists got
the shock of their lives
when they were pulled
aside by traffic officials
for outstanding ticket
fines using the newly
acquired Automate
Number Plate
Recognition (ANPR)
bus.
The ANPR system
reads number plates
and instantly brings up
all traffic fines collected
by the owner of the car.
“We are encouraging
our people to not drink
and drive. Our intention
is to mitigate the
carnage that takes
place on our roads
during the festive
season.
“We want to see a
safe Buffalo City, where
people drive safely and
their cars are
roadwor thy,” executive
mayor Xola Pakati said.
The campaign,
named after the biggest
phrase on social media
right now, Ska bapha
chance – meaning “do
not give them a chance”
– is to simply keep
roads safe this festive
season.
The mayor reiterated
that many roadblocks
would be held this
festive season, with
traffic officials visible
throughout the metro.
“We want to avoid
the loss of lives caused
by drinking and driving.
“We want people to
come to our city;
visitors are welcome
but they must behave
themselves. We have
put up cameras
throughout the city and
we are watching every
movement from our
control room at Fleet
Street fire department.”
MADELEINE CHAPUT
YOUTH Potential South Africa
(Youpsa) is launching its first
#GivingTuesday campaign to
raise funds for the various
educational programmes the
charity runs in rural schools
around the Eastern Cape.
“#GivingTuesday is a global
day of giving that harnesses
the collective power of
individuals, communities and
organisations to encourage
philanthropy and to celebrate
generosity worldwide,” said
Youpsa director Alexis
Salaman.
This year #GivingTuesday will
take place on Tuesday
November 28 and Youpsa is
calling for companies and
individuals to consider
supporting one of their many
classes by donating to this
campaign.
The organisation supports 25
classes of pupils around the
Eastern Cape and it takes more
than R28 000 per year to fund
one class.
Yo u p s a ’s programmes
impact 2000 youth, 85
teachers and six school
governing bodies in the
Eastern Cape throughout the
year. Each pupil is equipped
with unique experiential
learning skills and support that
extends beyond the classroom
and into the community.
The charity is especially
active in the Chalumna area
where they facilitate various
art, leadership and literacy
programmes for pupils, as well
as training workshops for
teachers.
“Supporting a Youpsa class
will make all the difference in
the world for these kids and
their families. We hope to see
as many classes as possible
sponsored by the public during
this campaign,” said
co-founder and facilitator Ray
Schone.
FISHY TALE: Mike Bruton is joined by Marlea Reid, left, and Tarryn Cloete
from Bargain Books in Beacon Bay for the launch of ‘The Annotated Old
organised the launch
New coelacanth book to
keep legendary story alive
ETHIENNE ARENDS
ON SATURDAY, Mike Bruton launched
The Annotated Old Fourlegs: The
Updated Story of the Coelacanth at
the East London Museum.
Bruton said it was apt to launch
the book at the East London
Museum as that is where the first
living coelacanth was researched
and is still kept. The East
London-born professor and biologist
said the book brings the “legendar y
stor y” back to life.
“The discovery of the first living
coelacanth brought our city [East
London] to the world and put us on
the map. It is for this reason that I
want to keep the story alive for the
next generation as it is something all
East Londoners should k n o w, ”
Bruton said.
The fish was discovered by late
East London Museum curator
Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer.
He said he is launching his book
this year as next year is the 50th
anniversary of the death of JLB
Smith, the South African
ichthyologist and university
professor who first identified a
taxidermied fish as a coelacanth – at
the time thought long extinct.
The book is a new version of
Smith’s book, bringing the
introduction, conclusion and various
sections of the book up to date.
Bruton described the discovery of
a living coelacanth as “one of the
greatest science stories of all time”.
“The discovery of a fish that was
thought to be extinct with the
dinosaurs was remarkable and
provided a window into the past.
Scientists were able to study and put
together a fossil,” Bruton said.
“But it is more than this – it
became a cultural thing too. The
coelacanth was used in art and even
on money. It became the symbol of
marine conservation.”
Concert to help Newman
MADELEINE CHAPUT
LAST weekend a benefit
concert was held in a bid to
save the sight of South
African acoustic guitarist,
Steve Newman.
The event to honour the
popular musician was held
at Buffs Club and raised
more than R27000 for
Newman's eye operation.
Newman suffers from
glaucoma and is currently
completely blind in his right
eye, with his left
deteriorating quickly. At
75% blind, Newman needs
to undergo a cataract
operation in his left eye.
Newman played
alongside local bands
Seratonin, Freight Train and
Solbeit Union, as well as
musicians John Lawrie,
Steve Culbert and Kev Taz
Fish. “Musos gave of their
time and talent for free. A
really big thank you goes to
them,” organiser, Ed
Johnson said.
Despite Newman's poor
eyesight, it did not hinder
the master guitarist and the
night proved to be an
impressive showcase of
some of his musical ability.
“He has lost none of his
guitaring skills. He
quietened the crowd with
his fabulous rhythm and I
was reminded why he is
FOR A GOOD CAUSE: A benefit concert was held in honour of
South African acoustic guitarist, Steve Newman at Buffs Club,
Africa's top guitarists,”
Johnson said.
A total of R21 000 was
raised through ticket sales
and paintings by Charlie
Felmore and Dave Edwards
were also auctioned off with
the proceedings being
donated to the cause.
The show was hosted and
organised by String and
Whistle, a communitybased
organisation started
by Johnson and run with
team member, Les Venter.
String and Whistle is
dedicated to raising funds
for worthy causes through
music events.
Formerly known as
“Music in the Garden”, the
organisation has, to date,
held fundraising music
shows in support of
anti-rhino poaching, the
East London SPCA, Pet Pals
and most recently, Steve
Newman.
“About 28 years ago I
started the String and
Whistle Music club, hence
the name of the
organisation. About two
years ago the SPCA was in
desperate need of funds so
we held our first
f u n d r a i s e r, ” Johnson said.
“We changed the
fundraisers to indoor events
as the weather often
created problems and
people wouldn't pitch. The
response from musicians
has always been such that
we had to turn some of
them away! They all play
without any compensation.”
Newman's eye operation
is scheduled for next month
whereby the cataracts in his
left eye will be removed.

THE Eastern Cape Department of
Provincial planner from the
Real story behind Black Friday tradition
IT MAKES sense that
the term “Black Friday”
might refer to the single
day of the year when
retail companies finally
go “into the black” (i.e.
make a profit).
The day after
Thanksgiving in the US
is, of course, when
crowds of shoppers
descend on stores all
over the States to take
advantage of the
season’s biggest
holiday bargains. But
the real story behind
Black Friday is a bit
more complicated –and
darker –than that.
The first recorded use
of the term “Black
Fr i d ay ” was applied not
to holiday shopping but
to the financial crisis:
specifically, the crash of
the US gold market on
September 24 1869.
Two notoriously
ruthless Wall Street
financiers, Jay Gould
and Jim Fisk, worked
together to buy up as
much as they could of
the nation’s gold,
hoping to drive the
Shopping frenzy has roots
in stock market free fall
price sky-high and sell
it for astonishing
profits. On that Friday in
September, the
conspiracy finally
unravelled, sending the
stock market into
free-fall and
bankrupting everyone
from Wall Street barons
to farmers.
The most commonly
repeated story behind
the post-Thanksgiving
shopping-related Black
Friday tradition links it
to retailers. As the story
goes, after an entire
year of operating at a
loss (“in the red”)
stores would
supposedly earn a profit
(“went into the black”)
on the day after
Thanksgiving, because
holiday shoppers blew
so much money on
discounted
merchandise. Though
it’s true that retail
companies used to
record losses in red and
profits in black when
doing their accounting,
this version of Black
Fr i d ay ’s origin is the
officially sanctioned –
but inaccurate – stor y
behind the tradition.
In recent years,
another myth has
surfaced that gives a
particularly ugly twist to
the tradition, claiming
that back in the 1800s
Southern American
plantation owners could
buy slaves at a discount
on the day after
Thanksgiving. Though
this version of Black
Fr i d ay ’s roots has
understandably led
some to call for a
boycott of the retail
holiday, it has no basis
in fact. The true story
behind Black Friday,
however, is not as
sunny as retailers might
have you believe. Back
in the 1950s, police in
the city of Philadelphia
used the term to
describe the chaos that
ensued on the day after
Thanksgiving, when
hordes of suburban
shoppers and tourists
flooded into the city in
BARGAIN HUNTERS: Thousands of shoppers will again flock to shopping
malls and stores this week to join the madness of Black Friday. This photo
shows shoppers at Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth chasing down Black
Friday bargains
Picture: WEEKEND POST FILE/DENEESHA PILLAY
advance of the big
Army-Navy football
game held on that
Saturday every year.
Not only would Philly
cops not be able to take
the day off, but they
would have to work
extra-long shifts dealing
with the additional
crowds and traffic.
Shoplifters would also
take advantage of the
bedlam in stores to
make off with
merchandise, adding to
the law enforcement
headache.
By 1961, “Black
Fr i d ay ” had caught on
in Philadelphia, to the
extent that the city’s
merchants and boosters
tried unsuccessfully to
change it to “Big
Fr i d ay ” in order to
remove the negative
connotations. The term
didn’t spread to the rest
of the country until
much later, however,
and as recently as 1985
it wasn’t in common
use nationwide.
Sometime in the late
1980s, however,
retailers found a way to
reinvent Black Friday
and turn it into
something that
reflected positively,
rather than negatively,
on them and their
customers. The result
was the “red to black”
concept of the holiday
mentioned earlier, and
the notion that the day
after Thanksgiving
marked the occasion
when America’s stores
finally turned a profit.
(In fact, stores
traditionally see bigger
sales on the Saturday
before Christmas.)
The Black Friday story
stuck, and pretty soon
the term’s darker roots
in Philadelphia were
largely forgotten.
Stores started
opening earlier and
earlier on that Friday,
and now the most
dedicated shoppers can
head out right after
their Thanksgiving
meal. – i n fo r m at i o n
Further studies make big impact on salary, society
THE matric year is a difficult
one for pupils. It’s the last of 12
years of schooling, and it’s a
year filled with emotional ups
and downs!
It’s a time you also need to
decide on what next?
“As an institution we clearly
recommend further and higher
st u d i e s , ” Boston City Campus
& Business College’s Ian
Becker said.
“It’s easy for us to advise
further studies – we have done
this for 27 years and we have
seen the huge impact further
education makes on
communities and societies. It’s
a more difficult decision for
pupils though. It involves a
commitment of time, finances
and personal discipline.”
So what will convince a pupil
Becker discussed recent
research carried out nationally
by O f f e rZe n . c o m .
“These were conducted with
specific reference to
developers, but we can see
that many of the outcomes can
be extrapolated to other
indust ries,” he said.
IT developers in South Africa
and internationally have varied
qualifications, with some being
self-taught and having no
qualifications at all.
“This makes it very difficult
to convince pupils to stick with
the programme and gain
post-school qualifications”,
Becker said.
The starting salary for
SENSATIONAL singer Refentse
From the moment he was
He certainly brings something
different to Afrikaans pop music,
with a distinct African flavour. Two
years ago, when he was only 18,
Refentse made waves on the
Save the day with sunshine tonic
HERE’S something I’d like you to
ponder over this morning. What
industry is generally regarded as
having the best potential for growth
in South Africa? Not sure?
Well, it’s the tourist industry. In
spite of the dreadful publicity this
country is currently enduring, we live
in one of the most beautiful regions
on earth.
I know I have written about this
before but each year at this time, I
ask myself the same question: why
are we still wasting two of the most
valuable assets we have – time and
sunshine?
At half past five this morning from
my bedroom window here in my
apartment at Berea Gardens, I gazed
once again in wonder at the clear,
still, sun-filled vista which stretched
out before me over the suburb of
Stirling in the distance to the
glistening ocean beyond. And
while the sun, already high in
the heavens and bestowing its
daily tonic of life-enhancing
vitamin D upon mankind here
on earth, where were we? Still
snoring with the bedclothes up to our
necks!
Many years ago, a body called the
President's Council wanted to know
whether the people of South Africa
wanted daylight-saving.
Newspapers published a form on
which readers were invited to say
whether they were for or against the
idea.
What the outcome of the
questionnaire was I never discovered,
but obviously things stayed the same.
The principle of daylight-saving and
its application is simple and a
cost-free means of bringing clock
time closer to the reality of sun time
REFLECTIONS
... with Charles Beningfield
for about five months of the year.
Here in South Africa it would
probably work like this: On a
designated day, say the last Sunday
of October, the media would remind
the public to put their timepieces one
hour forward. Official clocks will all
change at precisely midnight and five
months later again on a
pre-determined day, we revert to
standard time.
On Monday morning, you would
start the day at the usual time but
you will find the sun a little lower
than you expected. No-one has
interfered with established
timetables. Schools start, offices and
factories open at the same clock time
as before.
Now comes the pay-off.
Leaving your workplace at
normal closing time (you have
worked no longer than usual)
you will be delighted to find the
sun higher in the sky than it was on
the previous working day. The hour of
sunlight you “s av e d ” in the morning
is now yours to use as you please at
the best time of the day for you –
after work.
Not only will entities such as
tourism and the leisure industry
benefit considerably but think of the
boost to the economy, the saving in
energy (lights and air conditioning
are used less); the crime rate reduced
(people get home in daylight);
everyday occurrences like traffic
accidents at the dangerous twilight
time being minimised; productivity is
stimulated and the general quality of
life is enhanced.
Of course drawbacks would be
inevitable, but 40% of the world’s
population believe the positives
outweigh the negatives – and for the
record, so do I.
COOLDRINK FAN: Peter Bruton shows off his massive Coca-Cola collection that will be featured on TV tomorrow
Television fame for
EL Coke collector
Bruton’s memorabilia features on DStv
MADELEINE CHAPUT
LOCAL Coca-Cola collector, Peter
Bruton was recently filmed and
interviewed for the South African
programme, Vrydag 4 Uur, in which
over 3500 items from his extensive
collection will feature.
Being the most advertised brand
in the world, Bruton has collected
more than 8500 Coca Cola items.
From yo-yos and flags to radios,
Bruton's private collection is the
largest in South Africa. “I started
collecting many years ago and
although it is my own personal
collection, it has been dubbed the
Coke Museum. Coca- Cola is
universal, wherever you go everyone
knows exactly what you are talking
about and that's what appealed to
me,” Bruton said.
“I don't really advertise much but
the Coke Museum has been named
one of the top three things to do in
Picture: FILE
East London and that’s how the
Vrydag 4 Uur team found out about
it. I was still surprised when SABC
called to set up the interview.”
Bruton's Coca-Cola collection can
only be viewed by appointment and
Bruton himself guides visitors,
showing various items he has
acquired over the years.
Burton's impressive collection will
be broadcast tomorrow on Vrydag 4
Uur on Channel 147 at 5:30 pm.
Summer Fun Run sunshine vibes
ROSS ROCHE
EAST London’s favourite
fun run is back on the
horizon as the SPAR
Daily Dispatch Summer
Fun Run gears up for its
latest edition on
S u n d ay.
The extremely
popular annual event
brings thousands of fun
runners and families to
the Esplanade to enjoy
the entertaining
morning.
“This year the run is
all about ‘family fun in
the sun’,” said acting
Daily Dispatch
marketing manager
Penelope Smith.
“What better way to
kick off the summer
holiday season than a
morning with the family
on our city’s beautiful
Orient Beach?
“We have loads of fun
summer activities for
the kids and great lucky
draw prizes and having
SPAR on board as our
co-naming sponsor
really is the cherry on
the cake.”
Smith believes it will
help the run reach new
heights and she hopes
to establish a
l o n g - st a n d i n g
relationship with the
c o m p a n y.
SPAR Eastern Cape
sponsorship and events
manager Alan Stapleton
said the family ethos of
the occasion was a
perfect fit for them.
“We ran the Family
Challenge in the past
and, following the
continued success of
the Women’s Challenge
in Port Elizabeth, we felt
there was a call to
remain involved with
the East London
communit y,” said
Stapleton.
“This is a great
opportunity for us to
back an event which
has been in place for 39
years and one that
occupies a permanent
date on the festive
programme.”
He said the Summer
Fun Run, which has been
held in various formats
over the years, ticked all
the boxes for them.
“It’s a great welcome
to the summer season –
a fun event suitable for
the whole family.
Besides the races, there
will be lots of great
events, lucky draws,
music and even
cheerleaders.”
A further connection
SPAR EC have with the
Summer Fun Run is that
the event has the
Association for the
Rehabilitation of
Persons with Disability
(ARPD) as its
beneficiar y.
Stapleton said this
tied in with the annual
Wheelchair Wednesday
campaign which they
supported in
collaboration with the
Association for Persons
with Physical
Disabilities (Eastern
Cape) in Port Elizabeth
during August.
“This CSI initiative,
which raises awareness
of the difficulties people
with disabilities face, is
extremely important to
the SPAR family and we
are excited to continue
that support through
the ARPD in East
London.
“The Summer Fun
Run was the first event
in East London which
welcomed strollers and
wheelchairs, and the
organisers donate R10
of each entry fee to
ARPD.”
He added the route
was suitable for
everyone – from moms
with tots to persons
with disabilities to more
serious runners, with
4km and 8km runs
available on the day.
The runs begin at the
Orient Beach swimming
pool on the Esplanade,
starting at 9am on
S u n d ay.
The first 2000 to
arrive on the day will
receive a free peak.
New slot
for race
Cycle event moved to March 2018
sHOCK waves vibrated through the
offices of St Bernard’s Hospice
when on November 10, it received
notification from Sanral permission
for the legendary three-day Port
Elizabeth to East London cycle challenge
was withdrawn due to ongoing road works.
Permission was granted in June, and the
crippling news arrived a mere 11 days
before the scheduled start of the event.
Although devastated by the news, the safety of
the cyclists, fellow road-users and the
reputation of the organisation had to be taken
into consideration and thus the instructions
were respected. This particular route would only
become available for the St Bernard’s Hospice
Cycle Challenge again in 2023, when all the
road works were completed.
“When in the business of palliative care, one
learns to look for hope amongst the ashes.and
to recognise opportunity amidst adversity,” said
CEO of St Bernard’s Hospice, Melissa Knox.
The opportunity found in this untimely
change is the growing relationship that
Queenstown Roundtable has with St Bernard’s
Hospice. “Queenstown residents have been
consistent supporters of this fundraiser,” said
Marchel Brown, resource developer for St
Bernard’s. “We are told to expect some amazing
hospitality on our evening there.”
As such, the “2017” St Bernard’s Cycle
Challenge is only postponed, and definitely not
cancelled. The dates are now 21 to 23 March
2018 and the new route will be an East London
Queenstown return trip, still held over three
days. This route is however an additional 100km
further. Total distance travelled will be 400km
and they now have space for a further 20
c y c l i st s .
“The dates include one public holiday, which
means supporters can use a day less of their
annual leave,” said Knox.
It is also just after the Cape Town Argus Cycle
Tour and will be an excellent opportunity for
prudent cyclist enthusiasts to stretch their
muscles over three days for a good cause whilst
maintaining their fitness for future events.
St Bernard’s Hospice wishes to thank its
sponsors and cyclists, who have been incredibly
understanding and accommodating with the
change in dates. It really demonstrates their
commitment to affirming life through providing
palliative care for all.
If anyone would like to know more about how
to get involved with our Annual Cycle
Challenge, please direct your queries to
Marchel Brown, event organiser
( f u n d ra i s i n g 1 @ s t b h . o r g . z a ) or to the CEO, Melissa
Knox (management@stbh.org.za).
STILL ON: The St Bernard’s Hospice Cycle Challenge has a new route and a new date after ongoing
roadworks forced its postponement. The event will now be cycled between Komani and East London
in March next year
Youth gear up for games
THE Eastern Cape provincial
and local government will
host the provincial sporting
games known as the Steve
Vukile Tshwete (SVT) Games
in East London, from
Wednesday to December 1.
The purpose of the games
is to encourage and promote
mass participation in sport,
especially in disadvantage
communities. It is also
affords the youth an
opportunity to live healthy
and active lifestyles, which
which will assist in keeping
them away from crime and
other social ills.
Furthermore, the SVT
games aspires to promote
sound inter-governmental
relationships, local economic
development and social
cohesion between districts
by using sport as a vehicle to
forge new partnerships and
strengthen existing
r e l at i o n s h i p s .
The games are named after
Steve Vukile Tshwete who
was the champion of sport
development to the youth of
the Eastern Cape and played
a significant role in the
unification of sport in the
country, particularly rugby.
An estimated 1500 young
players from eight districts
were selected through a
qualification process
involving games played in
their local municipalities and
districts to form a final squad
that will represent their
district at provincial level.
The sporting codes are
namely; netball, volleyball,
rugby, table tennis, football,
boxing and goal ball.
The games are held
annually so as to identify
new sporting talent and this
platform is also used to
identify players who might
represent the province at the
national games.
The official opening of the
SVT Games will be at the
Buffalo City Stadium, East
London at 5pm on Tuesday.
