The polar bear is the largest and most carnivorous member
of the bear family and some scientists believe that they are
genetically related to the brown bear. The male polar bear
can surpass a thousand pounds and an incredible height of
11 feet easily! Their scientific name is Ursus maritimus,
which is the old Latin word for sea bear.
Polar bears live in the Arctic and around countries near it.
Over half of the polar bear population lives in the northern
parts of Canada. Most polar bears live around 15 to 18 years,
yet in captivity, they have lived over 30 years. The polar
bear's primary diet are seals.
Polar bears are expert hunters. They have different methods
on how to catch their prey. One common hunting method is
called still-hunting. There they lay close to a seal hole and
wait for a seal to get air before snatching them with their
large claws.
Polar bears are excellent swimmers, can smell their prey a
mile away, and after they had a meal, they like to roll in the
snow to clean their fur.
Many believe polar bears also live with penguins. This is
incorrect. Penguins are only found in the Antarctic, and
polar bears only live in the Arctic.
Female polar bears build maternity dens to prepare to give
birth to cubs. Usually, two are born, and they take care of
them for 2 and half years before departing.

When polar bears are held in captivity in a hot and humid
country, their fur can turn green, which is caused by algae.
One has to wash the fur, and the coat will look white again.
Be careful not to say that the polar bear has white fur! A
polar bears fur is not white! Each hair is a clear hollow tube.
The hairs reflect light to make the bears look like they have
white fur.
Polar bears are amazing marine mammals! Find the time to
research more about them. There is so much more to learn
that hasn't been added to this trivia gamebook!

Polar bears are in grave danger of going extinct due to the
warming of the planet. The bears were the first vertebrate
species to be listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act
as threatened with extinction.
Often referred to as the largest land carnivores in the world,
polar bears are marine mammals and spend much of their
time on Arctic sea ice, often hundreds of miles from land.
Climate change is melting their icy habitat, making it
increasingly difficult to travel, hunt and raise their young.
Some scientists believe the polar bear was once a close
relative to the brown bear. They think that, over time, polar
bears moved to the Arctic, where they adapted to their
surroundings by developing fur that would help them blend
in with the harsh, white Arctic ice.
Inhabiting the ice and sea of the Arctic, polar bears are wellequipped
for survival in a harsh environment. Two coats of
fur and a thick layer of blubber help insulate the polar bear's
body from the cold, keeping its temperature at an even 37°
C (98.6° F).
Polar bears are thought to be the only animal to hunt
humans actively.
A bear can assimilate 84% of the protein and 97% of the fat
it eats. Polar bears need an average of 2 kg (4.4 pounds) of
fat per day to obtain enough energy to survive. A ringed seal
weighing 55 kg (121 lbs) could provide up to eight days of
energy for a polar bear.

"Even as I speak, the very last polar bear may be dying of
hunger on account of climate change, on account of us. And
I sure miss the polar bears. Their babies are so warm and
cuddly and trusting, just like ours." - Kurt Vonnegut
"By now, sympathy for the plight of the polar bears had
largely disappeared from public discourse. Instead of
beautiful mammals deserving of our preservation efforts,
they came to be known as a marauding horde of beasts
surfing a climatic anomaly that was laying waste to Canada."
- Ryan Boudinot
doom and gloom and that, 'What can we do, it's too late.
And the polar bears are gone, and everything is gone.' But
really, just the little steps that we can make as individuals
make a big difference. - Orlando Bloom
