The Chairman's Notes
Well the tough games keep on coming and this
afternoon we welcome the players, officials and
supporters of current League leaders Newport Town
to The Paycare Ground. They are currently on a
seven game unbeaten run so we know another
difficult game is in store. Win, lose or draw the
players and officials will be made welcome to join us
for our award winning hospitality.
Hopefully my articles are usually pretty upbeat. This
weeks is not upbeat but is a salutary lesson for us
and for all football people.
Some of you may know that I lived in Cardiff for
more than 10 years. During my time there I spent many a Saturday afternoon
watching Merthyr Tydfil FC until the club folded with significant debts in 2010.
The club was reformed under the name Merthyr Town in 2011/12 under the
management of a supporters trust. The new club motto was “Progress through
Stability”. They certainly made football “progress” gaining three promotions in
four seasons to the Southern League Premier Division where they still play
today.
So why I am telling you this? Well it is very sad to say that lessons from the past
may have not been learned as last week the club announced they were again in
financial difficulties and 80% of players had left the club following non payment
of wages. In last Saturday’s away game against Chesham United a
“development” side represented the club in a 13-1 defeat.
I do not say this with any pride as I personally know some of the people running
the club and they are good hardworking football people. However the club
apparently lived beyond their means in chasing “progression” were not
“sustainable” and are again paying a heavy price.
This is not an unusual story, we all know many clubs past (including ourselves)
and present living well beyond their means and paying players silly money in the
hope of “progression”.
No one at this club including players, bar and kitchen staff gets paid a penny.
Our Committee and Directors have taken the view that, based on previous
lessons learned, we will achieve stability and sustainability first by investing all
profits in improving our club and stadium facilities rather than paying people.
This means we can make good progress off the field at a pace which is
sustainable whilst also making progress on the field. There is a difference
between progression and promotion and we will NOT operate by “buying” or
attempting to buy promotion. Whilst I am Chairman I can assure you that we
will continue to operate in this way and unlike Merthyr Town, not put the future
of our club at risk again.
Enjoy the game and thank you again for your magnificent
support………
View from the Dugout
Good Afternoon and welcome to The Paycare
Ground for this afternoons important West
Midlands (Regional) League game against
current League leaders Newport Town.
Following poor performances against Atherstone
and Wem Town we wanted to put in a good
performance last Saturday in the B'ham County
FA Vase second round. I thought we started
well against Christ the King controlling the early
exchanges and moving the ball well in periods, I
thought we deserved to go in 2-0 to the good at
half-time, it felt more like a training session at
times, we never really got out of second gear.
We knew that in the second half our approach
play needed to improve and not dwell on the
ball taking too many touches, something we have done all too often this season.
Unfortunately, we never got going and found it hard to go through the gears for
some reason, saying that we could have scored another goal or two. We also have
to give Christ the King F.C. a lot of credit they changed their shape. The two
substitutions made early in the second half had a real impact for them they look to
play the right way and moved the ball well in periods of the second half.
Sometimes you get games like this and it’s frustrating from a manager’s and fans
point of view. When you know you should put a game to bed, but the most
importing thing was to win and get through to the third round which we did!
It’s easy from the side-lines at times to get carried away and frustrated when your
plans don’t come off. But our lads are honest and hardworking, we understand we
still have a lot to do in terms of functioning as one unit. While we all want success
today it’s important we stick to our philosophy and beliefs whilst keeping one eye
on the future. Again this week saw us involve two players under the age of 18 in
the squad which is important for the club going forward in terms of development.
Today see us entertain Top of the League Newport Town who are on an unbeaten
seven game run and will provide a different test altogether. Having set up teams
against Newport in the past, I know only too well what a good side Newport are
and dangers they possess. Manager Adam Proudlock has recruited well, especially
the recent signings, they are sure to be at the top of the table for the remainder of
the season fighting for promotion subject to injuries of course. Therefore, todays
result is really important for both teams to continue with their goals for the season.
The lads trained well on Tuesday night and know the task in hand and are focused
and ready to go. With the Darlo faithful backing us today we will be giving
everything on the pitch possible to get a result. I hope you enjoy the game!
Match Report
Birmingham County FA Vase
Darlaston Town (1874) 2 Christ The King 1
Saturday 18th November Kick Off 2 pm
Yesterday Darlaston Town (1874) secured a place in the last 16 of the
Birmingham County FA Saturday Vase after a 2-1 home win over Christ The
King.
Manager Andy Parkes was once again forced to change his match day squad
after midweek loss of Atherstone. Tyrone Clarke, Kieran Payne and Ant
Follows returning and a return debut given to Leon Taylor. Making way
were Liam Cox, Ricky Kelly, who were relegated to the bench. James Filkins
and Sev Brzostowski were not available, as was Antony Nichols and Steve
Mason who were on the bench at Atherstone so in came Hayden Hughes.
The long journey
along the M6 for
Christ The King
from the
Coventry Alliance
League did not
deter them as
they started
brightly matching
Darlaston Town
in every
department. The
first effort of the
game was a
Christ Church
Christ The King
shot from Kyle
Carey clearing
the bar from
distance.
Darlaston’s first
was from a rightwing
cross from Sam Giles, Lyon Taylor’s headed effort was saved by Christ
The King keeper Weir.
Although Darlaston had the lion’s share of the possession, they were not able
to create good chances, Christ The King created the much better
opportunities, efforts from Carey once again who was proving to be a real
thorn in Darlaston’s side and Kiam Gladwins both saved by Darlaston
keeper Aaron Morris.
6
On 20 minutes
Darlaston
broke quickly
from
defence, Sam
Giles being the
normal outlet
on the righthand
side, his
cross was met
by Luke
Charlton whos
effort was
blocked by
keeper Jack
Wear, the ball
rolled to Leon
Taylor tapped the ball into an unguarded net.
The goal did not deter Christ the King who continued to press Darlaston
back at every opportunity Kyle Carey being the architect of everything
the visitors created. Darlaston still continue press forward Tyrone Clarke
missing the target and having a shot blocked Scott Broadway and Ant
Follows also
missed the
target. Christ
The King had
efforts from
Kiam Gladwins
and Steve
McGinty saved
by Darlaston’s
keeper the
busier of the
two.
Darlaston
doubled their
advantage on
32 minutes a
poor clearance
from the
Christ The King defence after a corner ball, the ball found Ant Follows
just outside the area who hit a fine dipping shot which deceived keeper
Wear and found the back of the net.
The remainder of the half saw Christ The King have the best chances
with a header just missing the far post from Steve McGinty and a further
effort saved by Darlaston keeper Morris from Drew Kimberley. On 43
minutes The Christ The King skipper Chay Thompson received his first
booking of the afternoon for descent following a free kick conceded on
the edge of the Christ The King area.
7
Could Manager Andy Parkes galvanise his troops again after a first half
which seemed to be played at a slow pace, most players needing too
many touches and dwelling on the ball for far too long.
The half
started as if he
had, Sam
Giles having a
cross shot for
the right-hand
side saved by
the flying Jack
Wear. Leon
Taylor had a
further shot
blocked and
Tyrone Clarke
again missed
the target
trying a
curling effort
from the lefthand
side.
Following a double substitution by Christ The King Manager Scott
McGregor and a change in formation the visitors looked much better
going forward Darlaston were forced to play on the break. After 59
minutes Luke Charlton’s defected shot crashed into the right-hand
post, Sam Giles rattled the bar once. Christ the King with creating the
better constructed chances Steve McGinty and Dave McDowell missing
the target when it looked easier to score. Finally, they did on 72 minutes
a poorly defended corner saw the ball crossed by Tom Atkins which was
met with a powerful header from centre half Chay Thompson.
Two minutes after the goal on 74 minutes, Christ The King suffered a
blow scorer Chay Thompson received his second Yellow Card after a foul
on Darlaston forward Scott Broadway and was sent off by referee
Jordan Griffiths. The sending off had little effect on the game, the goal
certainly made Darlaston nervous and spurned Christ The King on, at
times the visitors looked if they had the extra man. Darlaston’s defence
was forced back, the midfield went missing despite the introduction
of Ricky Kelly for the injured Dave Richards. The match became more
stretched assisting Christ The King by creating more space to create
better chances.
It always looked like penalties hinged on one chance, it came after 85
mins the ball falling to Craig Hatton who effort looked goal bound until
Darlaston keeper Aaron Morris managed claw the ball away high to his
left-hand side ensuring that Darlaston progressed into the draw for the
Third Round and into the last sixteen of the Birmingham County FA
Vase.
A Look Around the
League
With the Worcester Raiders v Wem Town game falling foul of the weather,
today’s visitors Newport Town took full advantage to hit top spot for the first
time this season. Bromyard Town suffered a 7-2 mauling with an Ed James
hat trick the highlight of a stunning home performance. Matthew Male
helped himself to a brace with Rob Millington and an own goal completing
the scoring.
Team Dudley moved into third spot getting the better of local rivals Tipton
Town in a 3-2 home win. Former Darlaston and Stourbridge striker Chris
Knight opened the scoring for the students to give them a half time lead.
Tipton equalised in the second half before Brad Cox and an Alex Pinches
penalty put the home side in a commanding position. Tipton pulled a goal
back from the penalty spot to set up a tense finish.
Wyrley managed only their second league win of the season with a 1-0 home
win against Telford Juniors. Gornal Athletic continue to climb the table
moving into fifth spot following their sixth consecutive league win 3-0 at
home to Wrens Nest. In the only other league game St Martins were
comfortable winners 5-2 at home to Allscott. Scorers for the home side were
Dave Hartshorn (two), Shawn Melusi, Brendon Price and Dave Easthope.
Like ourselves Bustleholme and Old Wulfrunians were also in Birmingham
County FA Vase action. Old Wulfs entertained Midland Football League
Birmingham Tigers in a 2-2 draw, regular scorers Josh McEvoy and Noah
Diallo on target. Wulfs eventually progressing into the last sixteen, 6-5 on
penalties. Bustleholme also got the better of Midland League opposition in a
5-2 win against Coventrians.
The top six in the Premier Division all recorded wins with the top three
recording impressive 6-1 victories. Leaders Wolverhampton Sporting
travelled to Smethwick. After Smethwick had taken an early lead Sporting
responded magnificently, Angelo Franco, Jak Barnes (two), Tom Hill (two),
21
and Phil McKerdy all on the scoresheet. Tividale look the team most likely to
challenge Sporting for the title and easily disposed of a lack lustre Shifnal Town.
Goals from Darragh Bustin, Demetri Brown (2), Tyree Clarke Liam Wilkinson and
an own goal giving the home side their biggest win of the season. Malvern
Town recorded a superb 6-1 win against in form Wolves Casuals a hat trick
from Kyonn Evans, two from Shaun Smith and one Matt Turner from
cancelling out an early Casuals goal.
Fourth placed Black Country Rangers won 3-1 at AFC Bridgnorth whilst
Bewdley Town edged home 2-1 at Queen Street against Bilston Town
Community. Cradley Town moved into sixth spot with a 3-1 win at home to
near neighbours Dudley Sports. The most surprising result of the day was at
Ellesmere Rangers where bottom club Wellington Amateurs held the home
side to a 1-1 draw.
Both of last season’s promoted teams continue to do well in the Premier
Division with Wednesfield in eighth spot and Hereford Lads Club occupying
10th spot. Hereford got the better of Wellington in the local derby two goals
from Rory Worthing securing the points, Paul Jones was on the scoresheet
for the home side. Struggling Dudley Town were the visitors to The Cottage
Ground where Wednesfield ran out 3-1 winners including a debut goal for
youth team player Reon Abrams. In the only other game a late Alex Hunt
goal secured Pegasus Juniors a point against Stone O.A.
In Division Two Sikh Hunters went nine points clear at the top of the table
with a 9-0 home win against bottom club AFC Bridgnorth Development.
Former Darlaston striker Tyrone Atkinson helped himself to four goals and
former Darlo defender Ben Lawley was also on the scoresheet together with
Justin Nisbett (2), Connor Archer and an own goal completing the rout.
Warstone Wanderers were denied the chance to reduce the gap at the top as
their game at FC Darlaston was postponed. In the only other league games
Gornal Colts got the better of AFC Bilbrook 5-3, whilst Bewdley Town
Reserves moved into fourth spot with a 3-1 home win against Wonder
Vaults.
