The World famous London Palladium opened in 1910 to showcase populist entertainment, in the form of what the UK calls Variety. Over the decades, the London Palladium has played host to many international superstar entertainers, hit musicals, Royal Variety Performances, television shows, and the most English of theatre genres, pantomime! The annual London Palladium pantomime visit was as much a part of Londoners’ Christmas as a traditional turkey and tinsel, for a great many Christmas seasons, between 1914 and 1987, after which pantomime stood aside to accommodate long run musicals. A timely conversation in 2014 with the London Palladium’s owners, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group, coincided with their plans to bring back a Variety programme to the World’s most iconic Variety theatre. After almost two years in planning, under the direction of Qdos Pantomimes Managing Director Michael Harrison, our mutual dream of bringing pantomime back to the London Palladium on a grand scale, became a reality. Our £4m production of ‘Cinderella at the London Palladium’ opened on December 10th 2016, and broke every West End theatre box office record over its 5 week run, achieving 98.6% capacity attendance. For 2017, Michael and I are back with ‘Dick Whittington at The London Palladium’ with a stellar cast, led by Julian Clary, Elaine Paige, Ashley Banjo & Diversity, Nigel Havers and Paul Zerdin. This all new mega-production will feature lavish scenery and costumes, mid boggling special effects, high energy song and dance and plenty of laughter. ‘Dick Whittington at the London Palladium’ is the 'rags to riches’ tale of a boy from Gloucester who became Mayor of London and found love against all odds. Tommy Steele played the title role of Dick Whittington in the 1969 London Palladium production. Tommy was the star of the musical 'Half a Sixpence’ at London's Cambridge Theatre in 1963, and in a remarkable twist of fate, the brilliant Charlie Stamp, who himself recently starred in the hit revival of ‘Half a Sixpence’ at the Noel Coward Theatre, will play Dick Whittington for us at the London Palladium this season. So enjoy London and all it has to offer, but remember to book your tickets early to see London's funniest and most spectacular Christmas show, ‘Dick Whittington at the London Palladium’, which roars into Argyll Street from December 9th for a 5 week season.
