Welcome 

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Everyone. 

A huge thank you to all our customers of their 

continued support throughout 2017; we are looking 

forward to bringing you some great new features 

and articles in 2018. 

This issue has many of our local presentation 

evenings, well done to everyone. We’ve caught up 

with seven-year-old Olivia Brightmore and her 

Mum, Rachel to learn a bit more about them and 

we’ve got some last-minute Christmas ideas. 

Remember this is a joint issue so our next one will be out in the shops from 

February 2018. 

If you have any story in the meantime, do not hesitate to drop us a line – our social 

media will be keeping up to speed in the meantime and stories and news will be 

shared. 

Also, keep a look out for our 12 Days of Christmas promotion on social media, 

starting on 12th December – there are some fabulous prizes to be won. 

Remember if riding out to be BE SEEN and BE SAFE at all times. 

2018 also sees a change of format for the Equestrian Life Showing Championships. 

These will now be two Open Shows, no qualifiers will be held and competitors can 

either pre-enter or enter on the day. The classes are opened up to all Amateur, homeproduced 

combinations, so those who may have been or qualified for RI or HOYS 

are eligible. The dates are 22nd April and 2nd September, both at Oakridge Arena, 

Newark, Notts. The dressage Championships remain the same format as previous 

years – gain 60% or higher at any event to qualify. The dressage will be held on 15th 

April at Selston Equestrian.

Brilliant Bartle gives SCT 

Apprentices the Chance 

of a Lifetime 

“It is an absolute privilege to have the 

chance to be taught by Chris Bartle – I feel 

completely inspired,” said Becky Mullen- 

Feroze, one of Stubbing Court Training Ltd 

(SCT)’s employers of apprentices, after taking 

part in SCT’s exclusive Masterclass with 

British eventing team coach Chris Bartle. 

SCT’s long-running Masterclass Series, which 

gives SCT apprentices and their employers 

exclusive access to training with the world’s 

best coaches and riders, has attracted many 

international stars over the years. The East 

Midlands-based training company is very 

proud to have added possibly the most 

distinguished eventing coach of the past 

decade to that firmament. 

On Monday 20 November, Chris Bartle 

taught 10 groups of SCT apprentices and 

employers at Vale View Equestrian Centre in 

Leicestershire. The groups ranged widely in 

experience and ability, yet every rider visibly 

improved and grew in confidence during 

their Masterclass. 

“We are very lucky that, after taking part 

in our ‘Winning Ways’ seminar during 

the summer, Chris agreed to give this 

Masterclass,” said SCT’s Chief Executive 

Belinda Turner MBE. “Chris proved once 

again what an outstanding coach he is and 

we hope to work with him again in the 

future.” 

After a riding career that brought a 

Badminton win and success at the very 

highest level in dressage, Chris Bartle 

coached the German eventing team for a 

decade, winning team and individual gold 

medals at Olympic, World and European 

Championships. He took over the British 

squad in 2017 and helped them to team gold 

at the recent European Championships. 

Christopher said: “For many years, I have 

shouted that practical training is needed 

for the equestrian industry’s workforce 

– caring for horses in a safe but effective 

way. Apprenticeships combine hands-on 

experience with theory, and that is why I am 

so supportive of the work that SCT does.”

The apprenticeship scheme offers young 

people the chance to learn in a hands-on, 

constructive way while gaining a valuable

out what they have 

gained from being a 

HMB Super Syndicate 

member. 

Both Angie and Dave have been coming 

to Harriet for lessons with their horses for 

about 18 months when they decided they 

wanted to become involved in the HMB 

Super Syndicate. 

Angie said: “Being a member of the 

syndicate is a great opportunity to be part 

of equestrian sport at a level I would not 

be able to compete at myself. It allows you 

to be part of a team and get the sense of 

the competition and a ‘behind the scenes’ 

experience”. 

You can be as involved in the syndicate as 

you wish, with Angie and Dave taking an 

active involvement in the Super Syndicate, 

attending events, walking the course with 

Harriet to gain an insight into how to tackle 

the different fences, and helping with the 

horses throughout the day. They also help 

out with grooming tasks, taking part in 

washing off, helping tack up and untack the 

horse. 

Talking about Angie and Dave, Harriet 

said: “They have learnt a lot about the 

management of a competition horse from 

coming along to the events and getting 

involved in the tasks of an event horse”. 

Angie enjoys being able to witness the sport 

from a competitor’s perspective, admitting 

that, “it’s a great way to learn more about 

the sport.” 

“I have learnt so much from being part of 

the HMB Super Syndicate that I have been 

able to improve my own riding and, being 

part of the Super Syndicate has inspired 

and motivated me to set my own riding 

goals,” added Angie. 

Dave also admits, “it is enjoyable to be able 

to support someone like Harriet to follow 

her dreams”, adding that “it is great to feel 

part of a competitive team”.

2018 Club & Society guide 

The majority of people who read Equestrian Life are competition riders. They come in all 

shapes and sizes and so do their horses and ponies. Some are happy at Riding Club level 

and some want to get further up the ladder and maybe achieve the ultimate dream (to 

them) of competing at Horse of the Year Show or The Royal International. 

Whatever your chosen discipline, and again many riders have such versatile horses and ponies; 

they may be doing dressage one minute, show-jumping the next, working hunter or flat showing 

– there is loads to choose from. 

At Riding Club level it is fairly uncomplicated. You can compete at Riding Clubs without 

becoming a Member mostly. Some, for insurance purposes, may require a day membership and 

some you may wish to join as they run a Points Scheme for end of season awards. The cost of 

joining a Riding Club is relatively cheap for an individual and/or family and the class entry fees 

make the day enjoyable without breaking the bank, there’s often a good quality of standard in 

the ring and a decent variety of classes to choose from with a Championship at the end to aim 

for. 

If, as a rider (or handler) you’ve set your sights a little higher, there is much to choose from, so 

where do you start? Here’s a few to whet your appetite! 

The British Show 

Horse Association 

The British Show Horse Association 

(formerly known as The British Show 

Hack, Cob and Riding Horse Association 

- BSHC&RHA) was founded in 1935 by 

enthusiastic Owners and supporters 

of show Hacks and Cobs. In 1983 the 

Association added Riding Horses to its 

classes and by so doing greatly enlarged its 

Membership. Today the Association is the 

governing body for the Showing of Hacks, 

Cobs, Maxi Cobs, Riding Horses and HOYS 

Ridden Hunters 

The British Show Horse Association – BSHA. 

Membership is annual and Membership has 

to be for the owner, the rider and the horse! 

The Coloured Horse and 

Pony Society CHAPSuk 

If you are wanting to compete at affiliated 

level and compete a coloured horse or 

pony, you will need to become a Member of 

CHAPSuk. 

You may find at unaffiliated level, if you own 

a Native, the classes are split into Small and 

Large breeds; how-ever at affiliated shows 

the breeds are generally split out as well as 

offering a mixed class. 

The Welsh Pony 

and Cob Society 

Own a Welsh pony, then for many 

classes this would be the Society 

to join. Whilst you would join 

the main branch, they break the 

country down into Areas and so 

there would be one close to you for 

compete at. 

The British Connemara 

Pony Society 

The English Connemara Pony Society was 

founded in 1947 to promote the breed in 

the British Isles. Now the society has 800 

members, and the ponies have become 

extremely popular for both children and 

adults alike as they excel in so many 

fields. The name was changed to the 

British Connemara Pony Society in 2004. 

The BCPS run three shows a year an also 

a Performance Awards Scheme. If you 

own a Connemara, any show you go to 

and have your points card signed and 

these go towards the Points Awards for 

Achievement. 

The Fell Pony Society 

The Fell Pony Society’s aim is to foster and 

keep pure the old breed of pony which 

has roamed the northern fells for years 

and to circulate knowledge and general 

information about the pony breed. 

The Fell Pony Society run their own 

affiliated shows with awards, regional 

shows. 

The Exmoor Pony 

Society 

A registered Charity, the Exmoor Pony 

Society was set up in 1921 by moorland 

farmers for the registration of pure-bred 

Exmoor ponies, the conservation of the 

breed and the preservation of the breed 

standard and thus maintain Exmoor’s 

heritage. The Society also promotes the 

ponies to the general public attending 

events, holding shows and clinics and 

being a lead participant in the Exmoor 

Pony Festival. 

The Exmoor Pony is Britain’s oldest 

breed of native pony. Showing is an 

opportunity for breeders, members and 

owners to promote their ponies. 

The Exmoor Pony Society’s Breed Show 

takes place on the 2nd Wednesday 

in August of each year and is the 

only ‘members only’ event in the 

calendar. The Breed Show hosts the 

Horse of the Year M&M Open Ridden 

qualifier and for this class exhibitors 

can be a member of the National Pony 

Society or other breed or showing 

organisation. 

Exmoor Pony Society Area shows are 

held throughout the country and host 

a number of National Pony Society 

qualifiers. In addition, shows around 

the country can affiliate to the Exmoor 

Pony Society and are given special 

rosettes for: Best of Breed; Best Ridden; 

Best Gelding and Best Youngstock.

The British Show Pony 

Society 

Founded in 1949, in association with 

the National Pony Society the aim was 

to protect and improve the showing of 

Children’s Riding Ponies by promoting 

classes and competitions for Children’s 

Ponies. In 1954, the name was simplied and 

became just the British Show Pony Society. 

The BSPS is divided into 25 areas and 

Members can join directly the area in which 

they live. There are a wide range of BSPS 

events held in each area throughout the year 

and also the BSPS hold winter and summer 

championships. The Society is also 

responsible for the majority of pony classes 

that culminate at the Royal International 

Horse Show and recently Heritage M & M 

ridden ponies and Olympia The London 

International Horse Show. 

The Veteran Horse 

Society 

The Veteran Horse Society is solely dedicated 

to the care and welfare of horses and ponies 

over the age of 15 years. 

Launched over 20 years ago the Veteran 

Horse Society has developed into a large 

professional organisation thanks to the help, 

support and belief of many individuals. 

Starting out as simply organisation that 

people who own or care for veterans could 

join for help and advice on their older horse. 

It now umbrellas and range of different 

aspects of the older horse from showing to 

rehoming. 

For any horse or pony owner of a veteran, 

their competition career doesn’t have to stop 

as they advance in years. The Veteran Horse 

Society is extremely proactive in promoting 

the Veteran, shows can hold qualifiers for 

the Veteran Horse Championship and they 

continue to remain as popular as ever. 

Sports Horse GB 

British Show-jumping 

British Showjumping offer two steps into 

their membership. Club, which is just 

£30 for you and your horse or pony for the 

year and allows you to compete from 70cm 

- 1m and focus on qualifying for national 

championships in addition to participating 

in the many different training opportunities 

they have from regional training to local 

academies. You can also, if you are of 

school age, compete in the tremendously 

popular Just For Schools series which is 

quickly growing into a heavily contested 

area of the membership. 

Then Bronze League National Membership 

which starts at 85cm and allows you to 

qualify for championships that go to 

Horse of The Year Show and their National 

Championships at Stoneleigh Park to name 

just a few. With offers for new members 

starting at Just £55 per annum if you are a 

pony club or riding club member or a six 

month membership if you prefer it has 

never been easier to join. 

British Eventing 

It’s a sport that engages all ages and has 

equal opportunities to compete. British 

Eventing regulate as well as schedule more 

than 180 events throughout Britain that 

cater for nearly 94,000 entries per season 

(Mar-Oct). British Eventing has more than 

15,000 members and provides access to 

riders from grassroots level and just starting 

out to those performing at the highest 

international level. 

To deliver the sport on a national basis and 

to the highest standard, they train hundreds 

of volunteers, officials, riders and technical 

support teams. 

You can choose various forms of 

membership from Full, Owner, Associate. If 

you are not quite sure if it’s for you, you can 

also join as a Day Member which entitles you 

up to four events per season at a reduced rate. 

Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain – SHB(GB) – is a membership organisation and registered 

charity, governed by an elected council. As the leading British studbook, affiliated to the World 

Breeding Federation for Sport Horses and are also a governing body for ridden and in-hand 

hunter and sport classes held at affiliated horse shows in the UK, including qualifiers for the Royal 

International Horse Show (RIHS). 

Looking to compete in an RIHS qualifier, then you may need to become a member of Sport Horse 

GB. Memberships are required for the owner, rider and horse. Sport Horse GB is not just about 

showing though so the scope and benefits of Membership are wider. 

As most Memberships are annual, it is worth checking when the joining dates and/or renewal 

dates are for each Society. 

The Side Saddle 

Association 

The aim of the Side Saddle Association is 

to promote and encourage the art, sport 

and education of riding side saddle, and to 

further the interests of side saddle riders. 

We are a friendly and inclusive group who 

welcome ladies and gentlemen to join us 

in our riding and social activities, whether 

they be riders or non-riders. Side saddle is a 

sport for all, whether it is for recreation or 

for those with a competitive streak. If you 

have never ridden side saddle it is never too 

late to learn. Whether you ride on your own 

horse/pony or one that is hired or borrowed 

you will feel elegant, poised and special. 

Most horses and ponies take very well to 

side saddle and enjoy showing off their new 

found skills! 

New and potential members are 

very welcome, local help, advice and 

encouragement is readily available. The 

annual Members’ Handbook contains 

everything you need to know including 

competition rules and details for local 

contacts, qualified instructors, judges 

and events in your Area, grade tests and 

examinations. 

All the Areas run Shows across the year 

and many more Regional and National 

Shows run side saddle classes including 

National Qualifying classes. The National 

Side Saddle Show is the key event of our 

year, with riders chasing the coveted Rider 

of the Year Title, the 2018 show will be held 

from 3rd to 5th August at Addington Manor

Brackenhurst and the Elite Riders Academy 

Brackenhurst College, 

as part of Nottingham 

Trent University is well 

known for its Equestrian Centre. 

Offering a wide range of courses 

for students studying further and 

higher education, the idea for 

the Elite Riders scheme started 

four to five years ago, with just 

one rider which soon developed 

over the years and it is now split 

into dressage and jumping plus 

a Grooms Academy, with each of 

the ridden sections having five 

riders, including one Elite rider 

and the Grooms Academy having 

two students. 

Applicants can only come 

from students studying at 

Brackenhurst and the process 

is quite involved. Each year 

students are invited to apply for 

the Academy, starting with a CV 

and covering letter. They are 

then short-listed and a ridden 

interview is conducted, which 

lasts about one hour in total. 

From that number 10 

prospective candidates are 

reduced down to five and from 

the final five, one Elite rider is 

chosen. 

Benefits of being accepted on 

the Academy include regular 

training with a wide range of 

professionals in either dressage 

or show-jumping, ranging from 

Tina Canton, Kirsty Hardstaff, 

Andrew Fletcher and Sam 

York. There’s branded jackets, 

sweatshirts, competition/travel 

rugs as part of the Elite Rider 

programme and a BHS exam is 

paid for. 

It is a huge honour to be selected 

in the Elite Academy as the 

riders get to work at the guest 

demo sessions and marketing 

events with some of the top 

names that visit the University. 

The Elite riders are considered 

role models to the other 

students.

Ripley Riders Club is one of the oldest riding clubs in the 

country, founded in 1947 and having just celebrated 

their 70th anniversary. The Club prides itself on being 

an extremely well run show and by the calibre of competitors 

and judges they attract. They hold classes for all abilities 

that include novice and beginners classes, working hunter, 

in hand and ridden showing classes, show jumping and fun 

classes such as games and handy pony. Ripley Riders Club 

also host qualifying classes for a variety of shows throughout 

the season. 

Membership to Ripley Riders Club is open to all although nonmembers 

are also very welcome at all their shows. Members 

can take advantage of reduced class fees on show days and 

to be eligible to compete in the Members Championship at 

the two day Supreme Open Show that also includes a glitzy 

evening performance. The last show of the season also hosts 

the members Champion of Champions Finals where members 

are invited to come forward for this extra special class. 

The Ripley Riders Club Gala Presentation evening is a star 

spangled event where winning members are awarded 

trophies, rosettes and sashes. The Club also celebrates all their 

successes during the past season, which, in 2017, included 

honouring the triumphant Interclub Games team for the 

second year running. 

Nine shows are held per season at the Ripley Riders Club 

showground on Riddings Park, Somercotes. DE55 4LA and 

the 2018 season will commence on 8th April with an Easter 

Eggstravaganza Mini Open followed by shows on 22nd April, 

13th May, 27th May, 17th June, 14th and 15th July - Supreme 

Two Day Open Show with Evening Performance, 22nd July 

- Trophy Show, 2nd September and the double points for 

members show on 16th September plus the Champion of 

Champions Final.

A very popular National Competition for the Unaffi liated 

riders amongst us in both dressage and showjumping. 

Run for some 18 years by Granville & Janet Thompson, the reins have now been taken over by Event Director, Carole Newton. 

Carole is an experienced Equine Event 

organiser, with a passion for grassroots 

riding and has run local shows for a 

number of years at Grey Fern Park 

Equestrian Centre near Peterborough. 

Carole says; “It is so important that all levels of Rider have 

the best possible experience whilst out competing. For those 

early on in their equestrian careers, a bad experience can 

have a devastating affect on their confidence. My aim with 

UK Riders is to provide a professionally run event in a safe, 

fun and encouraging environment.” 

First Round Qualifiers are held locally so there is bound to be 

a qualifying centre near you! 

Once you have qualified at this level, competitors can, for 

an small annual fee, join the UK Riders membership scheme 

and you will be issued with a membership card. 

You will need this membership card to be able to compete 

in the second round Regional Qualifiers and then, fingers 

crossed, the National Finals which are to be held in 

September2018. 

Looking forward Carole plans to introduce Showing, 

hopefully for 2019, and is currently working with a major 

Equestrian brand to secure sponsorship. 

“Picking up the reins of UK Riders is a huge undertaking, 

Granville & Janet did a superb job and I have some very big 

boots to fill! I am really looking forward to working with 

both equestrian centres and competitors and building on the 

success the organisation has already seen.”

Insurance Brokers’ 

two major showing series 

proved the best so far — and as 

a bonus, none of the randomly 

collected samples across both 

tested positive for any banned 

substances. 

“It’s great news and I couldn’t 

be more delighted,” said SEIB 

marketing director Nicolina 

MacKenzie. “We absolutely will 

not countenance any form of 

cheating.” 

SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse 

(R2R) and SEIB Search for a Star 

(SFAS) are in the vanguard of 

SEIB’s “ethical showing” ethos, 

which is why the dope tests were 

undertaken. SEIB also had a 

weighbridge, courtesy of Baileys 

Horse Feeds, at some of the SFAS 

qualifiers to address increasing 

concerns about the weight of 

show horses. 

Although the dope tests were 

clear, some competitors fell foul 

of the very strict rules for the 

SFAS qualifiers, which, like R2R, 

carry a golden ticket for a final at 

the hugely prestigious HOYS in 

October. 

“We don’t bend the rules 

for anyone,” emphasised Ms 

MacKenzie. “The rules for both 

series are on the website and they 

are crystal clear. It is up to the 

entrant to ensure they comply 

with them. If they don’t, they 

don’t qualify. It’s as simple as 

that. 

“I do understand that it must 

be very disappointing to think 

you’ve qualified for HOYS [Horse 

of the Year Show] only to be 

told you can’t go because of a 

passport discrepancy, say, but the 

same rules apply to everybody so 

it is a level playing field.”

high starch and sugar levels of more 

traditional feeds can lead to fizzy and 

excitable behaviour, but keeping the 

starch and sugar levels of your horse’s 

diet as low as possible can have a 

positive effect on behaviour. Fast Fibre 

is the perfect choice for any horse or 

pony prone to, or at risk of developing 

laminitis as its combined starch and 

sugar level of just 7.5% falls below the 

10% level that is recommended as safe 

for laminitics. 

With a high fibre content of 26%, Fast

veterinary science and an increase in our

veteran horses is significantly increasing. 

Unfortunately with advancing age comes 

a natural decline in dental condition that 

can greatly affect the older horse’s ability 

to chew long stem fibre efficiently. If a 

horse is not getting enough fibre in his 

diet, he will

he may also be given. Horses that do not 

eat enough fibre are more likely to develop 

serious problems, including gastric ulcers 

and colic. A lack of fibre can also cause 

behavioural problems, including aggression,

horse’s inability to fulfil natural feeding 

and chewing behaviours. Fast Fibre is an

be performed in the UK, is this 

true? 

A 

Sadly, this is indeed true. 

Currently anyone could 

purchase a set of manual rasps 

and set up business! Hopefully, 

the law will change in the future, 

and require anyone wishing 

to practice equine dentistry to 

have passed exams to prove 

competency, and attend regular 

courses to keep their knowledge 

up to date.

Who should I employ to 

examine my horses mouth? 

Many people claim to be ‘equine 

dentists’, and an internet search 

will produce a large number of 

contacts.

However, in order to be 

sure that you are using a 

suitably qualified person you 

should ensure that they either: 

• An Equine Vet with an interest/ 

further qualifications in equine 

dentistry - some may also be 

members of the BAEDT, and a 

list of Advanced Practitioners 

and Specialists can be found 

on the RCVS website. Vets are 

able to administer sedation 

and other prescription drugs if 

necessary, diagnose conditions

competency, and can carry 

out dental work as the BAEDT 

guidelines above.

How long should an equine 

dental appointment take? 

Obviously, this depends a 

little on how much work is 

required. A dental examination 

and routine maintenance in a 

well behaved or sedated horse 

should normally take between 

20 and 40 minutes - any longer 

and it is likely that unnecessary 

work is being performed; equally 

any less than this may indicate 

that a thorough job is not being

necessary to move the horse to 

more suitable facilities in these 

cases.

My horse is eating 

normally and not showing 

signs of discomfort when 

ridden - do his teeth still need 

checking? 

A 

YES! As horses are flight 

animals, they are very 

good at hiding signs of pain/ 

discomfort. Advanced disease 

is diagnosed in a high number 

of horses that are outwardly 

‘normal’, and often these horses 

have to undergo expensive and 

painful treatment in an effort to 

correct the problems. Regular 

examinations can identify 

problems early, and therefore 

often prevent the necessity for 

extensive work in the future, 

keep feed bills to a minimum 

and prolong the life of the horse.

Is sedation really 

necessary? 

Not all horses will require 

sedation for a routine 

dental. However, there is no 

doubt that sedation allows a 

much better examination of the 

mouth, and can help identify 

more subtle signs of disease 

in all but the most relaxed of 

horses.

A 

No. In most cases horses 

eating should not change, 

or should improve, post dental 

treatment. If your horse doesn’t 

eat well then it is possible too

remove too much tooth, is this 

true? 

A 

No. It is perfectly possible 

to remove too much tooth 

with either traditional hand 

rasps or power tools. It’s the 

person using them who dictates 

how much tooth is removed! 

In many ways power tools are 

superior to hand rasps - for 

example, they can be applied to 

an individual tooth requiring 

treatment, and are generally 

kinder to soft tissues, whereas 

manual rasps remove dental 

tissue from several teeth in one 

go, and can cause extensive 

damage to soft tissues if used 

inappropriately. In addition, 

legally people using power tools 

must be qualified to do so - hand 

tools can be used by anyone, 

qualified or not.

Do you come from a horsey background? 

I haven’t come from a typical horsey 

background but my mum always had a 

passion for horses and rode when she had the 

chance, so when my obsession with horses 

began my parents were very supportive. 

My riding career started at age five with 

showing and Pony Club, but evolved 

at the age of eight when I progressed 

through BYRDS fledglings. I spent my work 

experience at a local dressage yard, then 

after leaving school an opportunity arose as 

a working pupil on a different dressage yard, 

that was me hooked on the discipline! 

What first attracted you to dressage? 

I was inspired by the elegance, skill and 

precision required of both horse and rider. 

Dressage to me is more than just a discipline, 

it is about combining artistry, correctness, 

harmony and creating a strong relationship 

with the horse in order to achieve the horses’ 

full potential. 

Tell us about your horses? 

I currently train and compete five horses 

varying in education from Novice to Grand 

Prix, each requiring different degrees of 

patience and training. 

Lulu and Finn are at novice level, they’re 

both very keen to learn, with lots of energy 

and potential. I am excited to see how these 

two young horses progress. Nemo is a star, 

I’ve ridden him from being a just backed 

four-year-old, he is very trainable and 

currently working at Prix St George. 

Kiwi is a fantastically talented horse, 

currently training at Inter 1 but is very 

sensitive and requires a little more patience. 

Urban is my knight in shining armour, my

partner in crime, hugely talented, I would 

trust him with my life. Urban has reached 

the ultimate in Dressage ability.... Grand Prix 

and is an amazing horse to ride. 

Who is your all-time favourite horse and why? 

My all-time favourite horse would be have 

to be Urban Hit owned by Pamela Johnston. 

We’ve been together as a team since he was 

eight-years-old, I have trained him from 

medium level to Grand Prix.... I trust him 

implicitly. 

Who is your dressage idol and who do you 

train with regularly? 

I have always admired Gareth Hughes 

as a rider/trainer. His calmness, skill and 

knowledge have always impressed me. I train 

with him whenever I can. 

Gill Liggins has always been on hand to assist 

and advise me throughout my professional 

Dressage career. 

Tell our readers about an average day 

There’s one thing you don’t have to be shy 

of ... and that’s work... my day starts at silly 

o’clock on the yard... rain or shine to turn out 

my own dressage bred yearling Sebastian, 

I then have an hour’s drive to where I 

train Urban and Kiwi ... a short break for a 

sandwich before moving on to ride Lulu and 

Finn. Next, I ride Nemo before heading off to 

teach clients. 

Do you find learning tests easy or have you 

forgotten a move whilst competing? 

I actually find remembering the tests quite 

easy. For me forward planning is the key. My 

technique is to take five minutes before each 

competition and imagine myself riding the 

horse through each movement, breaking the 

test down into manageable sections. Having 

ridden hundreds of tests I now find them 

easier to remember. 

What is your biggest win to date? 

There are lots of memorable moments, 

however..... I am very proud to have 

achieved a top ten place at the National 

Championships for the last few years, 3rd 

place in the Medium at the Nationals in 2015 

on Kiwi and 7th in the Inter2 this year on 

Urban Hit. 

Do you have time for any other hobbies and 

if so, what are they? 

When I’m not riding horses I enjoy clay 

shooting and keeping fit. Any spare time at 

the moment is spent with my partner Adam, 

working towards building our own Dressage 

facilities at home, having recently acquired 

planning consent for stables and a manege. 

What is your favourite bit of Equestrian kit? 

As a freelance rider/trainer my best bit of 

kit has to be my Nissan Juke and my two 

trusty co-workers... Dotty the miniature jack 

Russell and Teddy the working cocker spaniel 

without whom I simply could not get through 

my working day. 

Plans for the future 

This is something I am very excited about, 

I have an exciting list of horses that I am 

currently training and competing, so I am 

looking forward to seeing how they all 

develop over the next year. Another personal 

goal is to work towards my UKCC level 2 

dressage specific coaching qualification; 

training others in the discipline is something 

I find very rewarding, so to get this 

qualification would be a big achievement for 

me. As I have already mentioned, we have 

recently obtained full planning permission 

for further stables and a manege at home on 

the farm in Monk Fryston, this would enable 

me to develop my plans to build a training 

yard offering a fully bespoke livery business; 

Kingfisher Dressage. 

My intention for the yard is to provide a 

completely personal service to potential 

clients, focussing on quality of service rather 

than quantity. This should be available for 

new clients early in the new year.

NIPPY OUTSIDE!!! 

So, Christmas is just around the corner, 

that end of term and end of the year 

feeling creeps up on us as we open 

each Advent Calendar door. If you’re the 

cook in the house then the lists start 

getting longer very early on and the annual 

supermarket shop for Christmas gets 

more and more formidable even though 

the shops are only closed for a single day! 

I love Christmas time, my children are 

now all teenagers so can be very useful 

on Christmas Day when the mucking out 

needs doing and have even been known to 

assist with the washing up! Long may this 

continue! 

SO WHAT HAS THIS DECEMBER GOT IN 

STORE FOR YOU AND YOUR HORSE? 

Remember all your horse knows is that he 

gets fed each day at set times and when his 

tack appears he will be doing some work! 

He has no idea that you have been to a 

Christmas party the night before and might 

be feeling a bit fragile so will a day in the 

field really bother him instead of the long 

ride you had previously planned? I think 

not! Let me help you make the most of 

your riding this December. Make it a jolly 

time for your horse as well as for yourself.

WALKING POLES 

All of the Sheepgate horses do walking poles 

at least twice a week, it’s a great way of 

increasing the number of steps on your Fit 

Bit too, take advantage and don’t even wait 

for the New Year to get fitter! 

WORKING ON THE LUNGE 

Working your horse on the lunge has great 

benefits, I prefer to do this without the 

restriction of side reins and really watch the 

way your horse works on his own. Will he 

stretch equally on both reins; does he work 

similarly on the lunge compared to how he 

does when he’s ridden? 

WORKING ON THE LONG REINS 

Maybe you could long rein him if he is 

familiar with this; it is the next best thing to 

riding. (If you haven’t had experience of this 

before please seek assistance from someone 

who is experienced as it looks far easier than 

it actually is!) 

GO FOR A ‘JOLLY’ 

Maybe you can get a group of friends 

together and go for a long hack or a beach 

ride on a crisp morning to add some variety; 

it’s a great stress reliever too! 

GET INTENSE 

Why not book some extra lessons, you could 

even ask family members to think about this 

as the perfect Christmas gift for you. 

TOP WINTER RIDING TIPS 

• Warm up thoroughly before riding. As the 

temperature drops your shoulders rise up 

towards your ears as the tension and chill 

creeps in. Don’t let this delay your progress; 

some simple warm up routines will pay 

dividends for sure. 

• If bad weather stops play it’s not the end 

of the world...spend your time giving your 

horse a really thorough groom, this can 

seriously stimulate the circulation and do 

both him and you the power of good. 


Resolutions to ensure that 2018 is the most 

productive year yet for you and your horse. 

(Remember the lighter nights are really not that 

far away, before you know it spring will be here 

and the sun will be shining again; keep looking 

ahead with this in mind).

BABY NUMBER TWO! 

This month Lara has some exciting news and with the horses all in good 

form the year ends on a promising note for the future. Read on to find 

out more… 

Due to work commitments the horses 

have had to take a back seat in terms 

of competing this month, although 

I have been training hard ready for our 

outing to get them all qualified for the winter 

regionals.

With over 25 snags and handovers to do for 

Cyden Homes it could be said that I have had 

a busy six weeks but I am pleased to say all 

went well with lots of lovely new families all 

moved in to their new homes. 

The horses have been going really well in 

training. Felix is so close to being ready to 

come out at Prix St Georges and Bodyguard at 

Inter 2, although it is a little bit like the blind 

leading the blind at this level. 

We travelled to Sheepgate Equestrian for 

our first Inter 2 and I am pleased to 

report Bodyguard was a superstar 

with just a slight issue with 

the fact that I had learnt 

completely the wrong test! 

After a couple of errors 

the judge kindly gave 

me the test and Jess (my 

Groom) read it to me. Not 

the best preparation but 

we managed just short of 

64%. 

Felix also got 67.9% in the 

Small Tour qualifier so I am 

over the moon. Chanel, my 

homebred baby by Cadans got 69% 

in her first test to take first place and 

then went on to win the second test 

on 73% which was a fantastic result for only 

her second trip away from home. 

This was all the more impressive considering 

I only decided to take Chanel the night before 

the show. Cleo was meant to be having her 

first outing but an unlucky kick in the field 

hadn’t healed well enough to take her so 

Chanel got dragged out of her stable at 8pm, 

clipped and was loaded onto the lorry at 7am 

the following day. What a star she was, and 

this followed a week’s holiday. 

Jasmine, our homebred three-year-old by 

Cadans, has left us for her new life as an 

eventer with the talented rider, Kristina Hall 

Jackson. 

Although I 

was hoping 

for her to 

be my up and 

coming homebred 

dressage horse, her love 

was jumping. I jumped her 

a couple of times and she was so bold and 

happy it just wasn’t fair on her not to use 

this natural talent. I am very much looking 

forward to watching and supporting them in 

four-year-old British Eventing classes. 

Annabelle and Gary enjoying 

their trip to Center Parcs 

Gary, Annabelle and I managed four days 

away to Center Parcs with our lovely friends 

Kate and James, which was well overdue and 

needed. It was a lovely few days just chilling 

and having quality time with Annabelle and 

Gary. 

I am also thrilled to announce Annabelle is 

going to be an older sister! Baby girl number 

two is due at the end of April 2018.Gary and I 

Lara and Bodyguard 

are super excited for another bundle of joy to 

join our family but that will be it! 

I am hoping the pregnancy will be as easy as 

with Annabelle in terms of riding right up 

until the week before the birth and then back 

in the saddle a couple of days later, but we 

will wait and see, as they say all births are a 

little different!

Champions are 

made at Catton Park 

Midlands Carriagedriving (MC) held 

its annual Club Championships at 

Catton Park 16 – 17 September and 

despite a small field classes were competitive 

with some leaders falling by the wayside as 

others excelled in the marathon. 

In the Pre-Novice class Bob Auton led after 

dressage and cones but he had to give best 

to Sandra Jackson whose obstacle times 

were quicker, the latter taking the class by 

less than 12 penalties. Philip Wright took 

the Novice class; he led after dressage from 

Helen Jordan and Joanne Gadsby. Helen 

overhauled Philip after the cones, however, 

an accumulation of time penalties on the 

marathon course dropped her down the order. 

Joanne suffered a carriage malfunction soon 

after setting out on Section A and 

Emma Young 

had to retire, as a result Philip regained his 

lead with quick obstacle times. Rosemary 

Armstrong, who had been fifth after 

dressage, also leap-frogged Helen after 

finishing second in the marathon and was 

second overall. 

Drivers in the Intermediate class had 

everything to play for on marathon day as 

only 3.8 penalties separated the first four 

after dressage and cones. Fiona Powell, 

driving one of her tandem ponies, won the 

marathon by 0.5 of a penalty from overnight 

leader Claudia Bunn, also driving one of her 

tandem, but it wasn’t enough to snatch the 

overall lead. Linda Wiggin was eliminated for 

missing a gate in Obstacle 4 so the final result 

was Claudia Bunn first, Fiona Powell second 

and Anne Lightfoot third.

second; Steve Trebble came up the 

order for third after Sue Corlett

and David Wheeldon after the first two 

phases but had to retire at Obstacle 5. David 

also retired out on the course, leaving Emma 

the sole survivor. 

In the Teams class Mark Carruthers led 

after dressage from Angie Smith and Emma 

Young but blotted his copybook when he was 

eliminated in the cones. Angie picked up 

time penalties on Section B of the marathon 

course which dropped her to second overall, 

Emma taking the spoils. In the One Day Event 

Elisabeth Greensmith led throughout with 

her single pony from Dawn Tebbett who was 

driving a pony pair. 

Sadly, due to changes in farming policy, this 

may have been the last Club Championships 

to be held at Catton Park although MC will 

be holding its 2018 spring event 

at the popular venue where 

members have competed for over 

20 years.

Julie Norfolk bought Henry for her son, 

Richard on his 15th birthday in 2015 

when Henry was 8. They were told he 

had never evented before and certainly 

had no record either in the UK or in 

Ireland. He had been a hunter and could 

not even walk down the road in a straight 

line. Their flatwork trainer, Alice 

Beasley, said riding him felt like riding 

an octopus! However, Julie said “Richard 

and Henry hit it off straight away, they 

were like two teenage lads rubbing along 

brilliantly, most of the time getting it 

wrong, but when they both got it right 

they were amazing”. Dressage was a huge 

issue for Henry as it totally blew his mind 

and their trainer said he would do well to 

get a 5 for his dressage marks as that was 

the level he was at. 

After lots of work they went to do their 

first One Day Event at a Pony Club event 

at Norton Disney in April 2015. The 

dressage was around the 40 mark, but 

they put in a brilliant double clear in 

the 80cm, and after a very well-behaved 

Henry, trainer, Maddy Moffett, said they 

could go to 90cm and affiliate to British 

Eventing. After campaigning for another 

few events, Richard and Henry came 3rd 

at the Pony Club Area Eventing Novice 

section at Buckminster Park in July 2015, 

finishing on their dressage of 32.5, but 

just missing out on qualifying for the 

championships due to how the numbers 

in the section fell. 

Feeling really confident, they stepped up 

to BE100 at Bold Heath, a first for both 

of them, and finished on a respectable 

score! A huge achievement for both 

in such a short space of time. After 

that Richard had to have an operation on his knee, which had been 

hampering him, riding such a big horse, as he needed a huge amount of 

support from his rider. 

After several months of rehab for Richard and with Mum, Julie 

recruited in to school Henry out hacking, they put the work in to come 

out again in 2016 at Stafford BE100. However, Richard said Henry 

didn’t feel quite right and after further investigations, the Vet found 

several physical injuries and off the scale ulcers! They were given 

only a 30% chance of getting him back up to the level of being able to

ambition. They have spent to last 18 

months getting better under to expert 

eye of Gaynor Minshull at NEH and 

with huge support from Alice, Maddy 

and Physio, Tamsyn Lafferty, and in 

August 2017 were given to all clear to 

go back out competing. 

Following some massively inspirational 

4* work experience with John Marsden 

and Duncan Smith at Somerford over 

the summer, they started again at 

Solihull 90cm, then did a couple of 

BE100s and Richard said Henry felt 

amazing and wanted to have a go at 

the Novice at Norton Disney to finish 

the season. Following a discussion with 

their trainer, they agreed they would 

see how they went at Oasby and then 

decide what to do. 

At Oasby, following the best dressage 

test Henry had ever done, they were 

lying in 2nd place on a score of 29.5 

going into show jumping with lots 

of scores still to come in. Their show 

jumping round was a lovely clear, and 

given they just wanted to have a really 

good run, it was now getting quite 

exciting and nerve racking! They had 

a wonderful cross-country round that 

was inside the time so finished on their 

dressage score. 

On checking the final score board, the 

top five riders were all male, Richard 

and Henry were in top spot ahead of 

professional riders Arthur Duffort, 

Paul Sims and Oliver Townsend. Julie 

commented “As you can imagine we 

were all absolutely ecstatic! They 

certainly proved to Maddy they were on it!”. 

The following week they went to Norton Disney to do their first Novice, 

a decent dressage score for Henry of 31.3 on a very windy day, when 

Henry had jumping more on his mind, followed by a double clear, put 

them in 6th place! An amazing achievement and such a big step up for 

them. It has certainly been like a massive, wonderful dream. 

Richard’s ambition when he first got Henry was to take him to 

Chatsworth, his local event. A winter of hard work may bring this closer 

to being a reality now! We shall see.

The Biggest Win! 

Seven-year-old Olivia Brightmore ended her 2017 on the biggest high possible, 

taking 2017 Supreme Pony of the Year at Horse of the Year Show.

has had the ride on Thistledown Van 

der Vaart (Charles) for the season, and 

competed in M&M Lead Rein classes with 

producer, Sharn Linney, who has herself, with 

different jockeys, contested this pony for the 

last five seasons. 

Olivia’s Mum, Rachel first met Sharn when 

she bought a couple of ponies from her and 

the opportunity to take on the ride became 

available when Rachel became friends with 

the owner, Sharon Wilson. 

Charles is no stranger to Horse of the Year 

Show, he has been Mini Champion in 2015 

and 2016, ridden by Hannah Wilson but 

this is the first year he has gone on to take 

Supreme Pony of the Year. 

2018 now sees the start of Olivia’s first ridden 

career. She has a new pony to campaign as 

part of the new show team her Mum Rachel 

has started. They currently have three 

ponies of their own and three ponies to 

produce so it will be a busy season. 

OFF THE LEAD REIN 

Rachel says it is time for Olivia to move up 

to First Ridden as she is quite tall for her age 

and, having won the ultimate accolade in 

Lead Rein classes, there is nowhere else for 

her to go at that level. 

Rachel said “Olivia loved the whole 

experience and has thoroughly enjoyed 

riding Charles and was desperate to get the 

opportunity to acknowledge the crowd when 

they were in the Arena. She had seen other 

riders waive and kept saying to Sharn, “can I 

waive now?” 

Rachel says “I feel so priviledged to have 

watched Sharn and my daughter achieve so 

much and just want to take this opportunity 

to say thank you to everyone who have made 

Olivia’s dream come true”.

Rachel herself comes from a show-jumping 

background, she worked for Michael 

Whitaker, one of the best-known names on 

the show-jumping circuit, driving his horses 

all over Europe to the 5* shows for him. As 

her new show-team will take priority, other 

work will take a backseat as managing six 

ponies will soon become a full-time job. 

Olivia’s dad is also a farrier so horses are very 

much part of the everyday scene. 

HOW IT ALL BEGAN 

Olivia’s riding started aged two/three years 

old. She competed in lead rein at a few local 

shows and also joined Rufford Pony Club. 

Aged four, Rachel bought their first M&M 

Lead Rein pony, Cosford Challenger and they 

decided to join the BSPS. This combination 

qualified for the Royal International their 

second time out in 2015 in the Open M&M 

Lead Rein and they went to on take 10th 

place (from around 38 forward) at the Royal 

International that year, just as Olivia turned 

five the same weekend. 

They contested HOYS qualifiers and were 

always well placed every time out, the Judges 

felt though that the pony may be better as a 

First Ridden. 

Following on from Cosford Challenger, 

Rachel brought out another Novice ridden by 

Olivia, Thistledown All Black, who went BSPS 

Novice Mini Champion in 2016. 

In 2017, Rachel brought out another lead rein 

pony, untouched from the Thistledown Stud, 

called Thistledown Leona. Rachel broke her 

in herself in January of this year and within 

three months they had won their first lead 

rein class at the BSPS Area 5 show at Arena 

UK and taken Champion. They then went 

on to win all of their classes and qualified 

for the Royal International first time out. 

Thistledown Leona, subsequently piloted 

by Lily Ahern, also went on to qualify for 

Horse of the Year Show at only their second 

attempt at the North of England Show. 

Despite a busy life with school and ponies, 

Olivia does find time to pursue her other 

interests and hobbies which include dancing 

and swimming and she has just joined the 

Brownies. 

Although their enthusiasm is with the 

showing scene, Olivia is also having training 

sessions with dressage trainer, Vikki Hayton 

locally and Rachel admits, she is really 

starting to see the difference the discipline in 

the flatwork is making to both the rider and 

the pony as she gets ready to start her 2018 

campaign in First Ridden classes.

Fund-raising 

for a great cause 

Miss Helen Wood with

In 2014 Holly Russell lost two very dear 

young horses, Dearne Valley Sundance 

& Mortomley Midnight Amber, to her 

first case of Equine Grass Sickness (EGS) . 

Earlier this year her close friend, Yasmin, 

lost her young mare, Quimera De Suseata, to 

this terrible disease. Shortly after Quimera’s 

passing they decided to get together and 

organize a charity show, to raise funds for the 

Equine Grass Sickness Fund. 

After tireless planning and preparation, 

their show took place at Hazlehead Hall 

Equestrian, by kind permission of Mr William 

Booth, in October. The weather was kind, 

which helped make the show a huge success 

and they had some lovely horses forward and 

lots of support.

This was an overwhelming moment, as she 

had attended the show in memory of her 

young horse that she had lost to EGS, after 

six days of ownership, only four months ago.

expenses. Holley commented “I am so proud 

of what we have all achieved, I am hoping to 

run a dressage event in 2018 to raise further 

funds for this very worthy cause, that is so 

close to all our hearts”.

one competitor. She had brought her young 

cob along to do some in-hand classes, she 

was placed first in her cob class, then ring 

reserve champion, then overall in-hand

The Notts Derby 2017 Presentation Points Award Night was 

a huge success this year, Held at the Sportsman Function 

Room In Long Eaton, ran throughout the season, a FREE 

competition, where people collect their own points, for placings in 

the age groups, recognition for a area they have excelled and our 

famous final countdown, running this year all the way from 33rd 

place.

“Tuesday Clear round jumping - just come along from 1pm and buy your 

ticket. Tickets are £15 for 2 rounds this includes any help you may need 

from Caroline Moore (may be alternative trainer occasionally) 

Trailblazers Show jumping – starting at 65cm introductory level through 

to 1.05cm providing an opportunity to qualify for an Unaffiliated National 

Championships. 

Dressage – we do trailblazers, affiliated & unaffiliated classes at Vale View 

from walk trot introductory tests through to Grand Prix tests, you will need 

to enter at least 4 days before the competition and please telephone if you 

need to make a late entry. Payment must be made at time of booking to

As a Physiotherapists I am highly trained 

and experienced. I’m an expert in the 

field of gait analysis, manual therapies, 

electrotherapies, exercise prescription, and 

rehabilitation in order to decrease pain and 

restore function. 

Physiotherapy can help improve 

performance, prevent injury, and enhance 

mobility and suppleness. Physiotherapy 

also assists in rehabilitation following injury 

and/or surgery with the aim of restoring 

the animal back to full function. It is not 

just for the elite competition horse or agility 

dog; every animal will benefit from being 

pain free, having symmetrical muscle mass, 

good range of joint movement, and supple 

muscles to enable them to move, work, and 

perform at their optimum level. It is good 

practice to have your animals routinely 

checked, and should be included in their 

overall management routine, even if there 

is no specific injury or trauma. Therefore 

small problems can be detected early and 

prevented from turning into a serious issue.
