“Why I caught it on the iron swing-arm by the<br />

fireplace,” she said, slowly backing away. “That is<br />

all.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> soldier shook his head. “Ma’am, we<br />

tracked them to the path leading toward your house.”<br />

He pointed at a short wiry soldier. “Jeb over there was<br />

a tracker during the French and Indian War. Learned<br />

how to trail people from the Mohawks.”<br />

“Well, there’s nobody here,” she pled. “I’m<br />

sorry.”<br />

“If they are not already here,” he said, shaking<br />

his head, “they’ll be on their way soon. <strong>The</strong>se are very<br />

dangerous men.”<br />

“Dangerous to you militia.” She admonished<br />

him. “You should get going now.”<br />

“Mind if we take a look around?”<br />

“I’ll not have colonial militia rummaging<br />

through my house.”<br />

“We’ll be very careful,” he said softly. “My<br />

name is Thomas, and I’ll make sure that my men stay<br />

in line.”<br />

She looked him over carefully. “Please make<br />

it quick,” she said after a moment. “And tell your men<br />

not to take any of my possessions. We do not have<br />
