the trees towards the old oak that was at the center<br />

of the mini-forest. Tom was already waiting for him<br />

when he got there, flashlight in hand and a backpack<br />

slung over his shoulder. “So? What is it?” Benny<br />

was excited to see what his friend, who was notorious<br />

for getting his hands on things like cigarettes, had<br />

found.<br />

Tom grinned and sat down, rummaging<br />

through his bag as Benny took a seat a few feet away.<br />

“I was going through the attic and found these,” he<br />

placed a folded up cloth on the ground between them.<br />

“Dad said they belonged to his great grandfather and<br />

they’ve been passed down from generation to generation.”<br />

Curious, Benny unfolded the cloth, revealing a<br />

set of daggers that glimmered in the dim light. “Supposedly<br />

his great grandfather practiced some weird<br />

religion and used these knives in ceremonies. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

haven’t been used for anything since.”<br />

“What are we supposed to do with them?”<br />

Benny picked one up and examined it closely. It was<br />

relatively small with a black handle painted with intricate<br />

designs.<br />

“I thought we could make a blood oath.”<br />

Benny frowned. “A blood oath?”<br />

“Yeah,” Tom nodded. “We each cut our palms,<br />

put our hands together so the blood mixes and we<br />

make a promise.”<br />

Although Benny was uncertain, he agreed.<br />

“Okay then…what kind of promise?”<br />

“We should keep it simple. We never betray<br />

each other.”<br />

We never would anyway, Benny thought,
