Deidre approached, caution evident in every<br />

step. Anna scowled at the doll and kicked it across the<br />

floor.<br />

“Where is Serena?”<br />

“Easy, now,” Deidre said, her tone honeysweet.<br />

“She’s just fine.”<br />

“You’re hiding her. You took her while I was<br />

sleeping. A changeling wouldn’t do this time. No, not<br />

after I outsmarted you all before. You may be dying<br />

but you don’t want your kind to be murdered.” Anna<br />

grinned, panting.<br />

Anna hurled the arms, aiming for Deidre’s<br />

head. <strong>The</strong> nurse dodged them and tackled Anna, pinning<br />

her against the bassinette.<br />

“Evil faerie bitch!” Anna struggled, turning in<br />

Deidre’s grasp, grappling for leverage.<br />

“Take her,” Deidre said, sounding winded.<br />

Anna bucked as stronger arms bound her, her<br />

hair falling across her eyes. She slammed her head<br />

against the brick wall holding her fast, her teeth rattled<br />

together and stars flashed before her eyes.<br />

“Hold her,” Deidre said.<br />

“Hurry up. God, she’s stronger than she<br />

looks,” a man said.<br />

A sharp pain pierced Anna’s arm, brief and<br />

stinging. She thrashed, her blood thundering through<br />

her body.<br />

Henry. He didn’t understand. No one did. No<br />

one believed me. Not even when they found the little<br />

corpse among the ashes.<br />

Anna sobbed, tiring. A warm haze washed her,
