What are you looking forward to
most about the holiday season?
Quality time with family, new year
away with friends and enjoying
the slower pace the holiday
season brings.
What is the best gift you ever
received?
A city break away.
What about the best gift you ever
gave?
This year I am surprising my
daughters with 2 kittens. The look
on their faces will be the best gift!
What is your favourite holiday
movie?
It has to be Elf with Will Ferrell!
Can you name all of santa’s Reindeer?
Rudolf!, Vixen, Dasher….
Dancer….I know there are 8 in
total but can only remember 4.
Lol Johnson
photographer
(pg.56)
What are you looking forward to
most about the holiday season?
To me, the build up is the most
exciting part. The twinkling lights,
roaring fires and the smell of
mulled wine gets me feeling all
warm and fuzzy!
What is the best gift you ever
received?
Without doubt a pair of YSL
shoes, which my husband gave
to me on my birthday, just before
he proposed...My birthday is in
December, so I was already feeling
a little warm and fuzzy (see
previous answer!)
What about the best gift you ever
gave?
Oo - that’s a hard one...I guess it
was probably the kitten I bought
my eldest daughter when she was
5. She had no idea, so was very
surprised when it jumped out of
the box! Sadly he’s no longer with
us - maybe it’s time for another
wriggly gift...
What is your favourite holiday
movie?
I love The Nightmare before
Christmas - but I’m not sure if that
counts as a Christmas film or a
Halloween one? Maybe it can be
either!
Can you name all of santa’s Reindeer?
Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Dasher,
Donna, Blitzen, erm...Rudolph...?
Nina Elenbaas
Stylist
(pg.70)
What are you looking forward to most
about the holiday season? If I’m honest,
I guess it’s just to enjoy the free time
with my loved ones without having
the feeling I have to get some work
done. Working as a freelancer is
great, but for me it also feels like I
have to be available 24/7, and I guess
during the holidays I can let go of that
feeling.
What is the best gift you ever received?
In 2016 I volunteered in two different
orphanages in Indonesia. On my last
day at Yappenatim (orphanages in
Bali) the children surprised me with a
goodbye party including speeches,
a handmade flower crown, songs,
crafted gifts and a lot of letters and
even gifts for my nephews and nieces.
The fact that these children technically
have nothing and put so much effort
by giving me and my family gifts really
touched me. Besides that I have to
admit I was pretty excited when I
received my “Barbie Boutique” back
in the 90s ;)
What about the best gift you ever gave?
My grandmother, who was “Queen
T” of a big Indonesian family was suffering
from Alzheimer for the last 12
years. The last years it was very hard
for her to remember all the family
connections so I made her a big family
tree with pictures and names for
her living room. This way it was very
easy to point the pictures while we
were telling her about the family and
it made things a bit more clearer.
What is your favourite holiday
movie? My mother is from Germany so
I grew up spending my holidays on
the big farm of my grandparents. I
have no idea if this movie is known
in Canada, but since I was a little girl
I’m watching the Sissi movies with
Romy Schneider, especially during the
holidays. For years we’re celebrating
Christmas in the Netherlands and
even here the Sissi movies are passing
by on one of the the channels and we
keep watching it although we’ve seen
it like a thousand times.
Can you name all of santa’s Reindeer? I
have to admit I’m not coming any
further than Rudolph... Oeps!
emily kornya
Photographer
(pg.96)
What are you looking forward to
most about the holiday season?
To everything! Christmas is my
favourite time of year, and I love
everything that has to do with it!
I’m a bit of an Elf!
What is the best gift you ever
received?
That’s a tough one as I’ve been
very fortunate, but at least as a
child it was American Girl Dolls!!
What about the best gift you ever
gave?
Also tough, as I love finding gifts
my family and friends will find
special and personal. When my
brother and I were younger, I
bought him a pair of boxer shorts
and got a funny word he which
made up (and which kids used at
school ) monographed on them!
It was pretty funny!
What is your favourite holiday movie?
Also so hard, as I love so many!
I will have to say ‘Elf’, ‘The Santa
Clause’, ‘Love Actually’ and
‘Home Alone’.
Can you name all of santa’s Reindeer?
Of course! Dasher, Dancer, Prancer,
Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner
& Blizen; and of course Rudolph.

editor’s note
While children may be nestled all snug in their
beds, with visions of sugar-plums (or sugar
cookies, let’s be honest) dancing through their
heads, you parents are gearing up for a marathon
of holiday shopping, giving, family gatherings,
pot-lucking and travel! It would be nice to
simply hang up their stockings by the chimney
with care, and hope that St. Nicolas would soon
be there, but alas, it’s probably up to you to pull
the whole thing off without a hitch.
This year, it feels like the holiday season crashed
on my lawn without warning. I was busy enjoying
pumpkin-spiced everything and seemingly
forgot that as the days get shorter and colder,
holiday festivities approach.
Welcome to the Cinema, shot by
Parisian photographer Candice
Cohen, was inspired by the red
theatre seats, typical of a traditional
cinema setting. Candice had
been dreaming of shooting in the
cinema for quite some time and
was finally able to bring her vision
to life just in time for our holiday
issue!
The lines of the room, the red colour
and red curtains, contrasting
white screen and playful popcorn
props created the perfect environment
Designer Q&A
KID KONG
After having established herself as a freelance stylist, entrepreneur and
mother of two, Gabriella Sanders discovered a void in the children’s
fashion market and decided to fill it with the coolest streetwear for minis!
28
Founded by NYC native Gabriella Sanders, Kid
Kong is the cool new streetwear brand for kids that
will always have your little ones looking incredibly
stylish! The stylist and designer began her career
in fashion as a wardrobe stylist on sets of music videos
and commercials and over time began acquiring
private clients leading her to venture out on her
own. It wasn’t until having children of her own that
Gabriella discovered the children’s fashion niche
and a true passion – kidswear!
Gabriella had an obsession with making sure her
own children were always fashionably styled, which
brought to her attention a lack of trending, stylish
neutral-toned garments for kiddos. In it’s debut
season for Fall/Winter 2017, Kid Kong offers a line
of fully “Mommy-Approved” jeans, joggers, sweatshirts,
jackets, t-shirts and flannels constructed for
optimal comfort with soft seams and made of terry
and jersey fabrics.
We are excited to introduce Gabriella who is telling
us about her new label in this issue’s Designer Q&A!
What inspired the name of your label?
I’m a New York native and all the clothes are also
made in NYC. My line is high-end street wear. I envisioned
a kid taking over New York City with radiant
swag, a cool kid sitting on top of the Empire
State Building. Kid Kong just seemed perfect! Our
ultimate goal is to change the world one cool kid at
a time.
What made you want to design for children?
My obsession with making sure my own children
were always fashionably radiant, brought to my
attention to the lack of trendy, stylish, neutral coloured
and designed clothing in the kids fashion
market especially for boys. With the creation of Kid

Designer Q&A
30

Kong, I really hope to fill this void. I want to help
other mothers who see fashion as a lifestyle and
love to dress their kids in ways that radiate swag
and exudes confidence in our little ones.
What is your brand’s mission statement or
goal?
Kid Kong is fresh apparel for the fly kids. Its timeless,
yet trendy pieces are meticulously designed
for the cool kids. Not only is it created with an eye
for detail but it is created with a mother’s heart and
mind ensuring that safety, and ease of wearability
are apparent in every single garment.
What are the motivations or inspirations behind
the designs?
I was constantly envisioning and sketching designs
for my kids, especially my son, then having them
custom-made to my liking. It was almost impossible
to find him “cool” adult-like, neutral- coloured
clothing. The line was designed with a trendy fashion
forward guy in mind, only shrunken down. As a
mother, I also know what my son’s comfortable in,
willing to put on or keep on all day so I incorporated
that into the trendy high end street wear for
the kiddos.
Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
Modern-day streetwear and athleisure for adults.
What makes your label stand out in the industry?
The line was designed with a trendy fashion forward
guy in mind, only shrunken down with an
elevated color palate. Kid Kong did not want the
expected or primary colors with youthful graphics
that defined most children’s clothing. It is these
intricate choices that extends Kid Kongs appeal
and perfectly marries hip styles with youthful sophistication.
How does your design philosophy cater
specifically to boys?
Being a Mommy myself, my son rarely wants to sit
still long enough to put on one garment let alone
a few. He is also extremely picky about being
comfortable. Taking these things into consideration,
my line is created with comfort and built in
layers requiring only one garment to create a look
vs. layers and ease of wearability.
What do you have coming up that you are
really excited about?
For the FW 2017 collection we catered mostly to
the boys but in our spring line we incorporated
some really trendy pieces for girls. We are also
expanding our collection and adding cool items
like wind breakers and different colors of our best
selling Jogger sets.
What is/are your favourite item/s from the current
collection?
My favourite has to be the ninja set, racer set and
bomber trench coat. I drew all three of these
from scratch and they are one-of-a-kind pieces.
They look super cool and trendy on every kid
that wears them.
