BATTLE FOR BENNELONG
By-Election Saturday December 16,2017
10 Days to Go!
WIN! with TWT!
Campaign heats up!
BY TWT ON-THE-SPOT TEAM
Electioneering is reaching fever pitch in the Bennelong
by-election campaign with just ten days to
go to election day on Saturday week.
Tempers have become frayed in some parts with an altercation
occurring at the Epping pre-poll voting booth between
Greens and Australian Conservatives supporters. Liberal
and Labor volunteers assisted as peace keepers.
Both Liberal and Labor parties have brought out their big
guns daily to campaign for their respective candidates sitting
MP John Alexander OAM and former NSW premier Kristina
Keneally.
THE END-product always
amazes me when
a group of people collaborate
and commit to
something.
Earlier in the year I attended
a book launched by
a group of diverse people
who met regularly as part of
a writing group.
This anthology is a gift to
all readers.
It has stories within a story
of its own.
The book is called Pieces
of North Shore. I enjoyed

a relaxing colourful read.
The last chapter called
‘These aren’t conversations
I have’ left a smile on my
face.
It was written by Maria
Atwell and is an analogy
comparing a working-class
Melbourne suburb to the
North Shore niceness until
the niceness is shattered by
an encounter with Maria.
* * *
THE FIRST author wrote
from a house’s point of
view.
Every house has a story.
This house was perched
on sandstone looking
north-east towards Gardigal
National Park.
The house tells the story
of the family. A late 20th to
early 21st century window
into the life of a Sydney
North Shore family.
The launch of the book
was at the Stanton Library
ting
to launch the book in
the library’s conference
room, a beautiful room.
The semi-circular windows
captured both the
light and the rosellas dancing
in the maple treetops on
that Sunday afternoon.
To The POINT
With
LYNDA MITCHELL
Cheryl Szatow, a former
Kuring-gai mayor (2015-
2016), launched the book
which contains thirteen
original pieces by seven
writers. Each of the writers
wrote about their various
experiences of living in Sydney’s
North Shore.
The writers read aloud extracts
of their stories, which
convinced me to purchase
it.
Sue Little, one of the writers,
spoke about how the

of years getting to know
each other before they
wrote the book together.
An overview of some of
the pieces follow.
* * *
ANNIE MIRZA’s piece is
about a teenager overcoming
obesity due to kindness
of a resident protector who
intervened and busted bullies
trying to pick a street

Don’t Call Me Shirley tells
how boarding at Riverview
introduced David McFadden
to living in the North
Shore.
He explores and shares
his experience of life in different
parts and tells how
he returned to settle in the
North Shore.
Another piece is about
crossing the bridge to the
promised land and sharing

ing
various Sydney suburbs.
Rosana Wayand found
this fascinating when applying
for a North Shore rental.
One must be brave to
head for the promised land!
Michael Yee’s Borderlands
is a conversational
piece that lets you listen in
to North Shore teenager’s
private conversations.
The conversations in-

school divides.

dinner in Lane Cove leaves
a smile on your modern
face.
I would recommend this
book to anyone interested
in the diversity of Sydney
life or to anyone who enjoys
curling up with a book on a
rainy afternoon.
* * *
THE WRITERS signed
books and afternoon tea
was enjoyed - completing
the launch.
in the Park last Sunday.
This year we organised
a special Carols
event as Christmas is
such a busy time of
year and we spend so
much time searching
for the perfect Christmas
gifts or where to
go or how to celebrate.
This time is a good
time to relax and be
with children with singing
and Alexia Caceres
and, Boronia Park
Sophia Chesworth.
We eagerly wait for
this great occasion
every year.
It is one of the happiest
and enjoyable
times of the season
and with much excitement,
not only did we
have a visit from Santa
Claus but we thoroughly
enjoyed a won-
December 3 was also
the International Day of
People with a Disability
and we celebrated this
with our community at
Carols in the Park.
We are beginning the
rollout of our new Dis-
Bennelong Barney: Greens hit
pavement, Conservatives vent
Greens Bennelong by-election candidate, Justin
Alick, has called on Australian Conservatives
leader Cory Bernardi to reject violence after
tensions spilled over during pre-poll campaigning
in Epping.
Mr Bernardi dismissed the
incident - involving one of
his party’s volunteers and
another from the Greens -
as a “stunt” and said had
been told one of his “elderly”
supporters had been “physically
intimidated” and at one
point, jostled.
He said the Greens volunteer
“took a dive” and “was
said to be quite distressed.”
“It was immediately reported
to the electoral com-

(the) Liberals. This is unfor-
tunately the sort of extreme
tactics taken,” Mr Bernardi
said.
But Mr Alick rejected the
South Australian senator’s
version of events and that
it was the Greens volunteer
that was pushed over by a
Conservatives volunteer.
“Footage of this incident
has been circulated by the
media and on social media,”
he told The Weekly Times.
“Fortunately, our volunteer
wasn’t seriously hurt and we
are respect his privacy and
wish that he not to be placed
in the national spotlight because
of this incident.
“There is no place for violence
in Australian democracy,
and peace and nonviolence
is one of the Greens
four founding principles.”
Mr Alick called on Mr Ber-
nardi to also publicly reject
violence - or the threat of
violence - at polling booths.
“This is an important election,
but the safety of the
voting public, and any volunteers,
is far more important,”
he said.
Amid claim and counter-

stone in last week’s non-lifethreatening
incident, two key
facts have emerged.
An elderly Greens volunteer
ended up on his back
on a concrete footpath and
an Australian Conservatives
volunteer vented his frustration
in an anti-Greens tirade
immediately after the incident.
“The Greens are destructive
and a fascist organisation,”
the AC volunteer shouted to-

his mobile phone.
“Don’t vote for him (Mr
Alick) please. This guy
physically abused me this
morning. This guy put his elbow
on me. He pushed me
against the wall - I’ve got witnesses.”
With limited pedestrian
real estate adjacent Beecroft
Road near the entrance
to Epping’s polling booth
for early by-election voters,
tempers among the large
contingent of volunteers
packed into the area were
destined to fray.
“There’s lots of volunteers
down at pre-poll,” Mr Alick
said.
“But if you’re at a crowded
pub and someone bumps
into you, you can respond
calmly or you can resort to
violence.
“It’s unfortunate that in this
instance, the Bernardi supporter
chose the latter.”
Mr Alick said one high-
per
columnist and Bernardi
supporter had even taken
to social media to claim a
91-year-old Liberal Party
volunteer had been pushed
over by a Greens volunteer in
the same incident.
“This is false. It’s my understanding
the Liberal vol-

exhaustion and collapsed in
a separate incident,” he said.
BATTLE FOR BENNELONG
By-Election Saturday December 16,2017
Keneally campaigns
on schools funding
Labor’s star candidate in the Bennelong by-election, Kristina Keneally, has continued to campaign
on restoring schools funding in both the public and Catholic sector.
Last week, Ms Keneally
launched a NSW Teachers
Federation mobile billboard
being used as part of its
campaign opposing cuts
of more than $11 million to
schools in the Bennelong
electorate by the Federal
Department of Education.
She has also written to the
local Catholic Diocese to re-
store
every dollar of the $17
billion Malcolm Turnbull has
cut from schools “including
funding unfairly ripped from
local Catholic schools”.
“Every child should have
access to the best education
- no matter where their
parents choose to send
them,” Ms Keneally said.
tack
on Catholic schools is
proach
to services - they cut
services. Labor invests in
services.
“Catholic schools play a
vital role in providing a quality
education to children from
all kinds of backgrounds.
They deserve to fairly and
equitably funded.”
Malcolm Turnbull does not

he had “ripped funding from
Catholic schools across the
country, including here in
Bennelong”.

funding torn from local
schools and for a fair funding
model based on need,”
she said.
But Education Minister,
Simon Birmingham, said the

Federation were a desperate
attempt to push for an
unfunded Labor promise
clearly rejected four years
ago.
“Students across Bennelong
are set for an average
boost of around $2,125
each under the Turnbull
ing
plan,” he said.
“There are no cuts. If the

thinks an extra $19.7 million
for Bennelong schools over
the next decade is a “cut”,
then they clearly need to go
back to school.”
NSW Teachers Federation
President Maurie Mulheron
said the by-election was
an important opportunity to
hold Mr Turnbull to account
for deep cuts in funding for
local schools.

across the electorate of
Bennelong,” he said.1
“Malcolm Turnbull has
slashed education funding
here and Liberal candidate
John Alexander has supported
him all the way.”
Meanwhile, Catholic
Schools NSW chief executive,
Dallas McInerney, has

Catholic schools asking all
candidates how they will address
funding shortfalls.

for responses to three key
questions was today.
“In Bennelong, all 11 Catholic
systemic schools will be
denied the 10-year transition
afforded to independent
stand-alone schools,”
he wrotes.
“Catholic schools in Bennelong
will be $9.8 million
worse off in 2018 and
$52.3m worse off over the
decade to 2027.”
The responses from candidates
will be provided to

Catholic school students to
help inform their vote on the
December 16 by-election.
Liberal candidate in the Bennelong by-election John Alexander and
according to the latest poll - team up as baristas on the campaign trail at
Religious freedom and family values
top the Christian Democrats policies
The Christian Democrats hope voters will consider religious freedom,
grassroots democracy, local government rights and traditional marriage
when they go to the polls on Saturday, December 16.
Christian Democrats State
Director Craig Hall told The
Weekly Times that a vote for
candidate Gui Dong (William)
Cao is also vote for traditional
family values.
“Top of our list is freedom of
religion, freedom of speech,
traditional marriage and other
traditional family values,” Mr
Hall said.
“Central to our philosophy is
local democracy and we hope
voters will recall how Reverend
Fred Nile MLC stood by
voters in Ryde and Hunters

council amalgamations.
“This is central to our belief
because we are a grassroots
political party and Christianity
itself started as a grassroots
faith.”
An important part of the
Christian Democrats philosophy
is support for older and
retired people.

quality funding for aged cut
and we oppose cuts to services
to aged care,” Mr Hall said.
“We need to send a clear message to Canberra. Bennelong
deserves a better way. I need your help to send
a message to Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten: If we
keep doing the same things, we’ll keep on getting the
to lower energy bills in Bennelong
OPPOSITION leader Bill
Shorten has responded
to a recent article in The
Weekly Times about residents
struggling to pay
higher power bills and
vowed to take action to
lower them.
Mr Shorten made his
promise in West Ryde last
week at a campaign stop
for Bennelong’s Labor candidate
Kristina Keneally.
The Weekly Times revealed
how many residents
were paying up to 30 per
cent in electricty bills with
some homes paying more
than $700 per quarter.
Mr Shorten described
Bennelong as “ground
zero” for struggling residents.
“We are determined to
see the people of Bennelong
paying lower energy
prices,” Mr Shorten said.
“We will start by ensuring
that Australian gas is sold

China.
“We will also lower ener-
gy prices by encouring investment
and competition
in the energy market and
we will not get this until the
rules are clear.
“We need to reform the
energy market and we are
committed to reform.”
Mr Shorten said more
competition through alternative
energy sources
would also lower bills.
Ms Kenneally said Bennelong
is an electorate
with higher than average
rents and lower than aver-
age renter’s incomes and
the last thing constituents

higher energy bills.
“I am committed to lower

lower them if I’m elected,”
she said.
sports fans in our community
The Stage 2 works will
provide more training
space, caf, facilities and
“With women’s football
booming in Ryde, it is so
important that our amenities
Annual Fun Run/Walk a big success
Ryde-Eastwood family including

of the club’s Fitness Edge Health &
turnout given the inclement conditions.
This year the Leagues Club’s Board
of Directors generously donated

to the Children’s Medical Research
Institute.
Event organiser Jo Luke, the club’s
the event a great success.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better
turnout, especially with the unpredictable
weather conditions,” she
said.
“From the little children that took
part to the grandparents, everybody
gave their all. And special thanks go
to all those volunteers who made the
morning run like clockwork.”
After the Fun Run, participants refuelled
Ryde Librarians recognised
MORE than a million readers visited the City of
Ryde’s public libraries this year.
The million visitors set
a new record and puts
Ryde Library Service
amongst an elite set of
six NSW library services
with a million visitors
ranking.
The libraries also boasts
other impressive statistics
which include nearly
a million items borrowed
annually, 97,000 loans of
eBooks, eMagazines and
Ryde scraps Pickering’s heritage policy
THE DESPISED Heritage Policy of former Mayor Bill Pickering was scrapped by the unanimous
vote of Ryde’s new councillors on Tuesday night.
eAudios, 1,800 programs
and events, 63,000 event
attendees and 160,000
information requests.
The impressice statistics
are from the City of

Ryde, Eastwood, North
Ryde, West Ryde and
Gladesville which serve
to 35,000 residents of the
City of Ryde and Hunters
Hill local government
areas.
Ryde Library Services
also won the prestigious
Marketing Award
for Public Libraries for
the “March to a Million”
promotion.
“The Award recognises
marketing excellence
by a Council-operated
public library servicing
a community of over
100,000 residents and
was announced at the
annual conference of the
New South Wales Public
Libraries Association,”
City of Ryde Mayor Jerome
Laxale said.
March to a Million was
a three-month community
awareness campaign
promoting the services,
collections and pro-

Ryde libraries to achieve
one million visitors in the

The creative use of a
distinctive red and white
footprint logo, branded
giveaways such as re-

cookies, marketing material
and special promotions,
saw the campaign
exceed its goal
with 1,017,089 recorded

increase in the use of
services, collections and
new memberships.
Mayor Laxale congrat-
motion’s
success.
“This was a well-conceived
and cleverly executed
campaign that
achieved all its stated
goals.
“Not only did our library
services reach
the magic million visits,
public awareness of the
value of the library and
the extensive range of
free services provided to
the community also increased.
The Pickering policy
left heritage protection
and listing up to
the property’s owner or
developer with the result
that many historic
homes were demolished
or substantially rebuilt.
This outraged many
residents in heritage
streets who argued
the value of their own
homes was subsequently
reduced as their
street’s historic character
and steetscape
changed.
Under the new policy
endorsed by new Mayor
Jerome Laxale with the
strong support of the
Ryde Liberals, Greens
and Independents the
council will now heritage
list homes of significant
historic importance.
In a further motion
by Liberal Clr Trenton
Brown, the council will
also conduct an inventory
of heritage homes
across the City of Ryde.
Mayor Laxale blasted
the Pickering policy.
“We deciced the owner
would have the last
say and what we found
is that a new owner
comes in and knocks
down a historic home
because of our poor
policy,” the Mayor said.
“I will not stand for this
and it is time to correct
our heritage policy.”
Councillor Brown
agreed.
“In the past we’ve not
done enough and there
are those with no appreciation
of the history
and heritage of our
country,” he said.
The change in policy
was made after neighbours
of the heritage
Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale is pictured outside historic 330 Rowe Street in Eastwood.
home at 330 Rowe
Street, Eastwood, urged
councillors at last Tuesday
night’s council
meeting not to approve
a proposal for a childcare
centreat the site for
74 children.
Eunice and Jim Dumas
were among residents
who objected to
the loss of the 1906 era
Federation cottage at
330 Rowe Street, once
owned by local chemist
J.Vale and the council’s
responsibility to save it.
“We, too, have rights,”
Jim Dumas said.
Neighbour Jacqualine
Raad said she sought
justice from councillors.
“I have lived all my
life in Rowe Street and
I seek justice from this
council, this street is our
home, it is my home.
“This (proposed) development
is a wolf in
sheep’s clothing.”
Local resident Martin
Ho said the proposed
childcare centre
is “commercial in nature
and disregards the
community.”
“I do not want to tell
my children we’ve lost
this historic home forever.”
The change is Ryde’s
heritage policy has
been welcomed by heritage
campaigner’s in
neighbouring Hunters
Hill who said the Pickering
heritage policy
was a major reason why
Hunters Hill Council opposed
a forced merger
with Ryde.
SYDNEY Cricket Club’s talented colt Tristen McDonald
has been a batsman on a mission this summer in
the NSW Premier Cricket competition.
When the Central
Coast junior product
was dropped from the

last season he vowed
that he would return
by scoring a mountain
of runs in the minor
grades.
And the stylish top order
bat was true to his
word.
McDonald, who hails
from Woy Woy, commenced
the 2017-18
season for the Sydney
club in second grade
and has proved a revelation
with innings of 96,
109, 63 and 120 before
his recall to the top grade
for last week’s clash with
Sydney University at
Sydney University Oval.
He continued his early
season run harvest last
Saturday by top scoring
for the Tigers with a
gritty 60 in a rain-marred
draw with the Students.
Chasing Sydney University’s
total of 8 dec
351, the Tigers were
5-192 in reply when the
match was abandoned
after 60 overs.
McDonald’s superb
half century took his
season tally to 451 runs
at a healthy average of
75.2 and looks to have
consolidated his spot in

115 balls and clouted six
boundaries and a six and
posted a third wicket
stand of 85 with standin
skipper Harry Dalton,
who was unbeaten on
57 with eight boundaries

due to rain.
McDonald was caught

the bowling of 19 year
old leg spinner Devlin

Opener Justin Mosca
also impressed with a
polished knock of 60.
leg spinning all rounder
Ash Squire collected an
eight wicket haul in the
Tigers’ second grade
victory over Sydney University
at Drummoyne
Oval.
three wickets in the Students’
second innings to
of 8-74.
their skills and passion
for the game, “ said
and Ryde Eastwood

“With ladies from the
North Ryde and Carlingford
Junior Rugby
signed on, as well as
others from around the
Balmain district, this
side will be a melting pot
of local talent, all looking
forward to forming a
competitive side that will
be a force to be reckoned
with in the 2018
competition,” Glenn
said.
“They do still require
more women to join the
squad to ensure that
they can make this happen,”
he added.
The Hawks are also
looking for players to
compete in U/18 and
U/20 competitions next
season.
Favourite son Benji!
BY THE ONE EYED TIGER
Tigers fans and
supporters are this
week welcoming
back home favourite
son and superstar
Benji Marshall.
Benji has returned
to his old stamping
ground looking
forward to complete
his playing career
where he experienced
his most memorable
and enjoyable days
including winning the
2005 NRL premiership.
Brilliant Benji
rediscovered his
top form with the
Bananabenders under
the guidance of Benny
before being coaxed
back to Balmain by
Tigers new supercoach
Ivan Cleary.
Benji is keen to work
with the Tigers next
generation of young
stars especially half
back Luke Brooks,
fullback Tui Lolohea,
centre Moses Suli
and winger David
Nofoaluma.
He is also looking
forward to reuniting
with 2005 premiership
winning team mate
Brett Hodgson who will
coach the State Cup
team during the 2008
season.
Benji believes the
Tigers have picked
up a great lineup of
new quality player
especially in the
forwards where
premiership games are
won.
Critics who have
criticised the lack of
mongrel up front are
happy with the addition
of Chris McQueen
and especially Russell
Packer who spent
twelve months at Her
Majesty’s pleasure for
stomping on someone’s
head as indication of
aggressive behaviour.
Add Kiwi Test forward
Ben Matulino and
Robbie Rochow plus
utility Josh Reynolds
and sharp backs Taane
Milne, Mahe Fonua and
Corey Thompson.
Look out 2018. Here
we come. See ya there.
