Living
SNOW IN NOVEMBER
in fear
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
MANY Komani residents
whose living
conditions are not
suited towards
extreme weather have
reacted in concern to warnings of
bad weather until February next
y e a r.
The Rep had, in an interview with
WeatherSA, been told that warnings
for above-normal weather conditions
from November to next year
February, were in place. Such
conditions could include strong
winds, snow, hail storms, flash
floods, lightning, mudslides and
extremely high temperatures.
A strong wind experienced in the
area on Monday night has already
raised the fears of locals.
Construction worker Sicelo Tsolo,
who lives in an informal house in
Rhawuteng informal settlement, said
he could barely sleep on Monday
night.
“I am from Dordrecht, working with
the construction company renovating
the court. I could barely sleep as my
roof sounded like someone was
lifting it up the way the wind was
blowing.
“I was afraid, because there are
rocks on the roof and I feared they
could fall on top of me. If the roof
had blown off, I did not know where I
would run to get help because I do
not have family in Komani.”
Silvertown informal settlement
resident Lindelwa Mcakumbana said
extreme heat would spell disaster for
residents of the area as there was
one tap for about 200 people.
“We stand in queues waiting to get
water before it is cut off at noon. It
returns at 6pm.”
She said residents could also not
fight fires as it was impossible to
collect water from the tap.
Councillor Bulelwa Rhani had bought
a tank for the area, but, Mcakumbana
said, residents sent it back.
“Our community is ‘st o u t
(naughty). They could throw a dog or
a child in it and we would end up
drinking that water. We are asking
the municipality to give us another
tap please.”
Spilt sewage in the area would
also become an even greater
problem if it became hot.
“Every day we have to live with this
stink. If the municipality fixes it, it
will be a week and it will overflow
again. We are sick because of these
unhealthy living standards. My skin
gets what look like mosquito bites
and then they become sores.”
Residents were concerned that the
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality
would do little to help them.
Vuyiseka Ndatyana, who also lives
in Silvertown, said the former
Lukhanji Municipality had promised
them RDP houses and electricity, but
nothing had materialised. She said
another tap would make a vast
d i f fe r e n c e .
Nophelo Xepu of Ezibeleni said she
had not previously experienced such
strange weather in November.
“I was petrified on Monday night
because the wind was so strong. The
house was filled with dust.”
She said snow so late in the year –
followed by high temperatures – wa s
st range.
When disaster struck last year and
roofs and windows were damaged,
the municipality had pledged
a s s i st a n c e .
“My family was promised help by
the municipality to repair damages.
They only brought them blankets and
said they would bring them food, but
to this day they are still waiting for it.
We see people in Johannesburg or
Cape Town getting help from the
municipalities.”
Nokuzola Mtshebi, who also lives
Ezibeleni, said her 78-year-old
grandfather had finally decided to
take his grant money for next month
to fix his windows. “He will not have
groceries in December.”
At the time of printing, Enoch
Mgijima Local Municipality had not
responded to queries on disaster
plans.
No foul play in boy’s death
THE Komani police have indicated
that no foul play has been found in
the death of five-year-old Lunje
Mngeni whose body was found in
the yard of the John Noah High
School on November 12.
The Rep reported (“Boy, 5, found
dead” 17 November) that the family
of Mngeni had been seeking clarity
on what had happened to the child
after he had gone missing while
playing with friends at the school
building during the Sunday
evening. His body was found on a
cement slab at the bottom of the
three-storey building. The children
had gained entrance to the school
after hours as the fence was being
replaced.
The incident has since sparked a
call for security guards at schools.
Police spokeswoman Captain
Namhla Mdleleni said the child’s
death had been ruled as accidental.
It was believed that he had fallen
from the building. – Rep reporter
Drive to restore morality
Red Guard officers
apprehend suspect
LAST Wednesday morning, Red
Guard response officers
attended to a panic alarm at a
s u p e r m a r ke t where they
apprehended a suspect who
had allegedly attempted to rob
a person on the street and
members of the community
chased him into the store,
operations manager Willie
Reynecke told The Rep. The
suspect was handed over to the
police.
Just before midnight, the
security officer at a wholesaler
called in for assistance and
response officers were
dispatched to the store where
they apprehended three
suspects who had allegedly
stolen cool drinks. The
recovered goods were returned
to the manager and the
suspects handed over.
In the early hours of
Thursday, the security officer at
the municipal stores called for
assistance after noticing a
suspect on site. Response
officers chased a suspect but
were unable to apprehend him.
They did, however, recover a
stolen tyre that was left behind
by the suspect.
On Saturday night, the owner
of a tavern called the
company’s 24-hour control
room and asked for assistance.
Response officers apprehended
two suspects who had
allegedly stolen a patron’s bag
which was returned and the
suspects handed over.
Later the security officer at a
motor dealership called for
assistance as three suspects
had robbed a person walking in
the street. They apprehended
one and handed him over to
the police.
Early on Sunday, response
officers responded to a panic
alarm from a tavern where they
apprehended two suspects who
were fighting with knives. Both
suspects were apprehended
and handed over to the police.
THE Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM) has
developed a five-year plan to
guide activities of the district
Moral Regeneration Movement
(MRM) during a planning session
at the Roydon Conference Centre
outside Komani last week.
CHDM speaker Mxolisi Koyo
said the aim of the event was to
harness and support the youth
towards moral renewal and to
make the education system the
foreground of moral formation
while fostering greater religious
tolerance.
“We purposely invited a variety
of people who come from various
backgrounds and have different
occupations because we wanted to
cover all spheres of life. Our
society has been burdened by
criminal activities such as the
killing of women and people
eating human flesh.
“Platforms like these are
important to adopt a new way of
doing things and to revive our
conscience as a people.”
DA calls for EMLM provincial administration
THE DA has called on Cooperative
Governance and Traditional Affairs
(Cogta) MEC Fikile Xasa to intervene in
placing the Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipality under administration
according to section 139 (1) (a) of the
C o n st i t u t i o n .
The Rep reported (“Enoch Mgijima
councillors say ‘no’ to provincial
inter vention”, November 17) that only
nine councillors had voted in favour of
Xasa’s intention to place EMLM under
administ ration.
Xasa had served the local authority
with a letter two weeks ago, asking for
SPEAKING OUT: From left, provincial Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) secretary Bulelwa
Tshona, CHDM speaker Mxolisi Koyo and provincial MRM chairman Zamindawo Gqirha respond to
questions from reporters after the event at the Roydon Conference Centre Picture: ANDISA BONANI
He said those in attendance
needed to serve as watchdogs and
should have the confidence to tell
people who were doing wrong.
Provincial MRM secretar y
Bulelwa Tshona said she hoped to
grow partnerships with
stakeholders to allow working
relationships in combating crime
in communities and to bring back
traditions such as respecting the
e l d e r l y.
reasons why the province should not
intervene in the municipality’s affairs.
His correspondence indicated that
the municipality had failed to perform
its executive obligation, including the
non-appointment of a municipal
manager and chief financial officer and
that it had incurred irregular
expenditure by not complying with the
provisions of the municipal gazette on
implementation of upper limits,
allowances and benefits of council
members.
In a statement on Wednesday, DA
MPL Vicky Knoetze said the EMLM
“The departments of education,
health and social development
would be great partners. The
department of education would
help teach young people about
morals. The department of health,
which sometimes deals with all
types of abuse victims, along with
social development, would help
identify those in need of
assistance. All this, however, must
first start in our families.”
municipal manager position remained
vacant after 10 months and that of the
chief financial officer after eight
months, meaning that the municipality
had failed to adhere to the Municipal
Systems and Municipal Structures Acts.
The municipality had failed to
observe provisions of the Municipal
Structures Act in appointing acting
municipal managers as no reports with
recommendations were furnished to the
municipal council.
“That the municipality does not have
a CFO has also led to a roll-over not
being effected and the municipality has
Community and stakeholder
relations manager in the premier’s
office Nomfundo Nqinana said it
would be good to know how
municipalities would implement
the five-year plan tabled at the
meeting.
MRM district coordinator Chief
Xolela Mbali said their role as
traditional leaders was to enforce
legislation and to help eradicate
the criminal element in society.
lost R23-million as a result.”
The municipality had appointed and
paid 12 full-time councillors prior to the
approval of the MEC, resulting in
irregular expenditure which the DA had
warned the MEC about in April this
y e a r.
EMLM had until November 22 to
provide Xasa with reasons why it
should not be placed under
administration, with municipal
spokesman Fundile Feketshane
indicating this week that the
municipality was preparing its
response. – Rep reporter

Five years for taxi driver after nine die
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
A 44-YEAR-OLD taxi driver has been sentenced to five
years’ imprisonment after he was convicted on nine
counts of culpable homicide.
Simphiwe Qwebane was convicted by the regional
court in Komani of the deaths of nine passengers
when the taxi collided with a truck en route to
Mthwakazi in Whittlesea in May 2013.
State prosecutor Sabelo Kwayimani blamed the
crash on negligence and discounted Qebane’s
version of events during the end of the trial on
M o n d ay.
He said Qwebane had been driving a
Mercedes-Benz sprinter and had blamed the truck for
turning in front of him without indicating its intention
to do so.
“The accident expert had said the accused did not
pay attention while driving and was driving at a
speed of about 70 or more in a 60km/h zone. The
truck moved slowly, the accused misjudged the
situation and bumped into the truck.”
Kwayimani said the vehicle had been overloaded,
with 13 passengers injured in addition to the nine
who died. The vehicle had also not been roadworthy.
Defence attorney Luntu James said photos of the
scene showed that the vehicle was driving at about
71km per hour in a 60km zone, but this was due to
the accused who had tried to overtake the truck and
thus had to increase his speed. Skid marks showed
the taxi driver tried to avoid the truck, but that
Qwebane may have misjudged the situation and
applied the brakes too late.
Whittlesea magistrate Dotwana Fungile said
Qwebane was a “bad liar” and that there was
overwhelming evidence against him.
Fungile said he was satisfied with the evidence
presented by the accident expert Craig Proctor-Parker.
“The skid marks in the left lane are almost decisive
in this case. These stretch for some distance before
the point of collision. There are no skid marks on the
right and it begs the question how the accused could
have been overtaking on the right side, when there
were only marks on the left side.”
Fungile postponed the sentencing until Tuesday as
he said he had to take into account that he was the
breadwinner, with his wife and three children
dependent on him.
People looked to the court to serve the best
interests of justice and nine people had died, some
of whom had also been the breadwinners of their
families. The court also had to consider a lack of
judgment and diligence and that the accident could
have been avoided.
He said Qwebane, who had spent hours in the
wreckage before he was freed via the jaws of life,
had been the cause of the accident.
While the court had considered the suspension of
his driving licence, there would be no point as
Qwebane would be in prison.
DROUGHT RELIEF: The second borehole to be connected soon in Dordrecht.
Once this borehole is connected, the backwash will be recycled and re-used
in the Dordrecht water system
DORDRECHT – Condolences to Piet
Venter and his family, on the passing
of his wife, Tokkie. Her funeral took
place on Friday in the NG Church.
T H O U G H TS and prayers are with
Chris Schmidt, who had an accident
at the weekend, driving into a
stationary vehicle on the R392
between Queenstown and Dordrecht
on Friday night. He is currently
recovering in the Queenstown Private
Hospital.
COT TERRELL’S Construction is at
present working on the second
borehole in Dordrecht, just opposite
the hospital. Once this borehole is
connected to the waterworks in
Dordrecht, the run-off that runs past
the school and prison will be
re-cycled and re-used into the water
system. Despite Dordrecht town
receiving 29mm of rain and the
farming district up to 50 mm of snow
and rain this week, the dam level
remains low and water restrictions
continue.
THE Dordrecht Country Fair will take
place this Saturday. Interesting talks
will be given by Chris Burgess
(originally from Indwe), editor of
Landbou Weekblad, Fischer’s Dairy
on cheese, and Muffet Hartley, also
formerly from Dordrecht, will be
giving a Christmas flower
demonstration. These are but a few
of the festivities taking place at an
action packed Dordrecht fair.
STILL EMPTY: The Dordrecht dam level remains low despite the
welcome 29mm of rain and snow the town received. The farming
community received up to 50mm of rain and snow
THE REPRESENTATIVE 24 November 2017
EDITORIAL
OPINION
All about
South Africa
THE year 2017 is drawing to
a close. Thirty-seven days
remain to the end of the
year and the clock is ticking.
Fa st .
It’s been a challenging year
and with the economy still in
freefall, 2018 is hardly a beacon
of hope. People are suffering
and many are desperate.
Service delivery protests and
violent crime abound. You don’t
have to travel far to find
poverty – it’s right on your
doorstep ... in the man looking
through the garbage bags on
the pavement and in the child
going to school without lunch.
The innocent lose their lives for
a cellphone or a handbag.
There is tragedy and there is
despair. Politics take centre
stage on television screens on
a nightly basis as a country
holds out for a hero.
Former FirstRand Bank chief
operations officer Paul Harris,
speaking at Maritzburg College
earlier this month, said South
Africa had been described as a
country where the sun was very
bright, but the shadows were
very dark.
“One moment you can feel
insecure and despondent and
the next exhilarated and
inspired by a good deed and an
amazing accomplishment
against the odds, “ Harris said
in a plea for South Africans to
keep hold of that elusive factor
– hope – amid so much which
could easily convince us to
abandon all, including faith in
South Africa’s future.
In the same country where
44.6% of pupils either drop out
or get stuck in Grade 10, some
top young violinists are honing
their skills in a township
classroom in Masiphumelele in
Cape Town and UCT students
have developed an
award-winning app set to
change the face of job creation
in South Africa.
In the same country where
26% of households experience
hunger, a retired policeman,
Johan Scott, has established a
vegetable garden on the
pavement of his home in
Heidelberg to feed the hungry.
In the same country where
criminals wreak havoc and pain
among thousands, a young
South African, Darryn August,
who was left paralysed after he
was thrown from a train while
protecting two women, heads
for the Paralympics.
This is South Africa – b ot h
the good and bad of it. And
while we have just more than a
month left before we tackle the
new year, it may just do to start
working on that optimism again
– the fact that daily, South
Africans are changing their
country for the better. We can
either be part of it or choose
not to. I don’t think there is
much of a choice to be made.
It’s time to go
LAST year in September and then
again in November, I wrote
articles expressing my opinion
about the disastrous tenure of
Allister Coetzee as the Springbok
coach. In the first one I asked for
him to be given time as I felt that
he was appointed impossibly late
and he was saddled with a
coaching staff not of his choosing.
Then disaster struck and there
seemed no way that he could
arrest the slide
and the
IN
TOUCH
... with Phumelele P Hlati
calamity that
was the
Springbok team.
I then wrote a
scathing article
calling for his head as I felt that
evidence did not point to the fact
that he had the wherewithal to
solve the problems. I felt that he
was making a bad situation even
worse. Saru decided not to fire
him and gave him six months to
prepare for the June tests and a
coaching support staff of his
choosing.
I decided to give him the benefit
of the doubt and felt that, maybe,
things would improve and we
would be able to see the real
Coetzee.
As a fellow black man I felt that
I owed him that as the
circumstances under which he
had to work were not ideal.
More than a year later, after I
wrote that he should be fired, here
I am again writing about him after
a mediocre season that started so
brightly. For the record, this year
we beat France four times, beat
Argentina twice, drew twice with
Australia at home and away and
lost horribly to both New Zealand
and Ireland away. The close result
at Newlands against the All Blacks
was the worst thing that could
have happened to Coetzee as it
masked glaring deficiencies in his
selected sides.
His Bok team
has been like a
slow moving
t rain
approaching the
end of the tracks
with the driver
and passenger blissfully unaware
that it is going to derail.
I honestly do not see how and
why Saru should keep him for the
next two years. His win record is
less than 50% and his teams
seem clueless on the field. There
seems to be no clarity of thought
and that, to me, is the most
damning of all.
You will notice I did not touch
on his abominable transformation
record as I feel this would only
muddy the waters. Purely on
rugby reasons, he must go. Just
like Heyneke Meyer in his last
days, he has completely alienated
the rugby public.
It is either that he is stubborn or
incompetent or not able to see
that his teams are not the best
there could be. It’s time to go.
YOUR VOICE
GCINIKHAYA NYATI
ZIMBABWEAN President,
Robert Mugabe, stepped
down on Tuesday as head of
state. What do you think is
going to happen to the
country since the leadership
has changed? The Rep intern
Sivenathi Gosa took to the
streets of Komani to find out.
Gcinikhaya Nyati from
Whittlesea
I think there is going to be
change and that the situation
is going to be different
... vox pops on the street
What do you think about ...
TINE LUSHOPE LUPHO HOPE LAST GONO
although it is not going to
happen instantly. People will
live a better life now.
Tine Lushope from Komani
I do not think there is
going to be drastic change
unless the newly elected
leadership has different
plans for the country. I am
from Zimbabwe, I moved
here to South Africa with my
wife and children because of
the economic difficulties that
are happening in my home
with insurance company branch
manager Abongile Feni
Question: Why did you choose
this particular profession?
Answer: The career chose me,
because I started off as a
consultant at a bank. I chose this
path due to the many
opportunities and growth offered
at the time and I needed a
change.
Q: What is the one thing you
love most about your job?
A: Employing people who were
less privileged than me, helping
them grow in the company and
giving them guidance on how to
become who they want to be.
Q: Do you think the current
generation is as
ambitious/power hungry as the
generation of elders?
A: Yes. They allow worldly
distractions to take over their
lives and the majority of our
generation only realise once it’s
too late how to change their lives
for the better.
Q: What make you angry?
A: When a person looks down
on another due to their wealth –
their car, house, clothing or
anything that belittles other
country. I would love to go
back when things have
changed, as my life is back
there.
Lupho Hope from Komani
People were suffering due
to a lack of employment. I
think now that Mugabe has
stepped down there is going
to be hope for the nationals.
The Zimbabweans can go
back to their families,
knowing that there is going
to be a difference.
people.
Q: What is your typical
weekend like?
A: I watch movies, braai and
spend time with a good company
of friends.
Q: What is one thing you do
every day?
A: Check my e-mails to see
how far I am with my monthly
target.
Q: Where do you see yourself in
five years’ t i m e?
A: As the regional manager of
the company.
Q: Who is your role model?
A: Denzel Washington.
Q: What are you listening to?
A: Albums of Cassper Nyovest,
Aka, Anathi, Sjava and all good
Deep House selections.
Q: If you were asked by a radio
station to play a song that
would best describe South
Africa, what would it be?
A: Set Your Mind Free by DJ
Fr e s h .
Q: Describe Komani in three
w o r d s?
A: Fear of change.
Last Gono from Komani
Zimbabwe is going to
change and other countries
will now be able to join in
partnership with Zimbabwe.
The former president did not
have any relationships with
the majority of countries. I
came here (from Zimbabwe)
to South Africa in 2009 with
my family due to the lack of
jobs. At least now I am
earning an income by selling
my merchandise.

Balmoral
ready for
market
CHUX FOURIE
THE grounds of Balmoral Primary are
sure to be a hive of activity from early
morning on Saturday December 2 when
they hold their Christmas craft market.
It officially opens at 9am and ends at
2pm, but there will be so much to see
and buy that one wonders if one will be
able to get around everything!
As always, there is plenty of food and if
you’ve already had breakfast and don’t
feel like anything to eat while you shop,
why not get something nice as a
takeaway to enjoy as a hassle-free lunch
that you don’t have to prepare yourself.
Besides all the variety of “lunch”, there
will also be plenty of other foodstuffs like
jams and preserves, cakes and other
bakes, rusks, biltong… oh, the list goes
on and on.
Then there is a wide choice of items in
the clothing line, including handbags,
special baby clothing and accessories,
baby bags and jewellery.
At the time of writing there were
already more than 50 stalls reserved,
ranging from crafts of many different
kinds, gifts (Christmas always rushes up
on us), paintings, seedlings, frames,
wooden puzzles for children, fresh
flowers and needlework.
There’s a tea garden where you can
take a breather from all the shopping and
enjoy a cuppa and a natter with your
friends, while for the children there is
face painting and other entertainment.
The entrances in Haig Avenue and Jan
Smuts Avenue will both be available for
use, so get there early and make sure
that you are not disappointed. If this
event is as successful as the organisers
hope it will be (and all signs point in that
direction at present) they hope to make
this an annual event on the calendar.
ROUND&ABOUT
Fashion designers show talent
ANDISA BONANI
THE Chris Hani Craft Hub
(CHCH) held its fourth
annual Inkcubeko Yethu
(“our heritage”), art exhibition
and fashion show in partnership
with the Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM) on Friday
to create a platform for local
fashion designers to showcase
their talents.
CHCH manager Ayanda Gili
said the fashion show started in
2014 with 34 designers and has
grown over the years. This year
only 22 designers participated,
but the quality of products and
the turnout exceeded her
e x p e c t at i o n s .
Gili thanked all the sponsors
who supported the event and
ensured it was a success.
“The number of participating
designers has decreased due to
them moving to other parts of
the province where their talents
will flourish receiving exposure
and that is a good thing for us.
The good quality of products
was ensured through a
pre-judging that was held on
Thursday with the adjudicators.”
The designers were judged on
various categories namely
beading, creative design,
traditional, modern,
modern-traditional, urban and
kiddies’ w e a r.
Adjudicator Xoliswa Hudson
commended designers on the
great work they had done and
said they had made it difficult
to choose winners. She said the
designers were not given
enough time to prepare for the
show, but that did not deter
them from being creative and
doing the best they could.
CHDM portfolio head for
integrated planning and
economic development
councillor Sibongile Mbotshane
said their long-standing
partnership with the craft hub
was for the benefit of local
designers in the districts.
“The municipality contributed
more than R100000 towards
prizes, transportation of
designers and catering. The aim
was to promote local products
ON THE NOTICE BOARD
This show will help boost the
dist rict’s economy. If people buy
clothing from the designers it
will mean revenue circulates in
the districts.”
Winners did not receive cash
prizes but vouchers to buy
material for their products. In
the kiddies’ wear section Talawa
came first with a prize worth
R10 000, followed by ELL Tawi
Design and Knit with R8000
and Mayiwe Range Creation
was third and received R6000.
In the modern-traditional
category Liamber Traditional
won the first prize worth
R10 000, Mayiwe Range came
second and received R8000 and
Asenozuko Designs, third,
getting R6 000.
There was only one winner
each in the bead, creative,
urban and traditional wear
categories and that was
Kolobile Siphesande, Sanele,
Bali in Style and Litha Lethemba
respectively, who each won
Pepper mint
leaves the
body chilled
and relaxed
IT IS near that time of the year again – busy with
shopping, holidays and gorging ourselves with
more fast food!
Year-end festivities are around the corner.
Stricter dietary control gets tossed out the
window. In through the door comes more food
and drinks. Often happy times equal abundant
yummy food.
Sorry, but your digestive system can only
handle so much and soon will complain with
some indigestion. Try not overeating, but when
you do perhaps a little of a green herb called
peppermint may bring back your smile and
comfort. Rubbing a bit of peppermint oil with a
carrier oil on your tummy may relax upset with
colic, even in babies!
Complimentary mint sweets are often given
after a meal at some restaurants? Is it just to
freshen up your breath? Could it be traced back
to ancient use of the mint herb to assist
d i g e st i o n ?
Truth be told, most mint sweets are flavoured
these days and don’t contain the main oil of mint
– which is menthol. So you might only be eating
mint-flavoured sweets with none of the benefits!
Peppermint oil is also said to assist with
headaches and nausea while it relaxes muscles.
Don’t forget, it is great for common colds in
clearing respiratory congestion and infections.
This herb has calming effects and studies show it
eases intestinal cramping with its anti-spasmodic
properties. If you suffer from IBS (irritable bowel
syndrome), peppermint in slow-release capsules
may really be a useful aid for you in some cases.
Historically, peppermint was created from a
cross between water mint and spearmint. This
little bright green herb grows abundantly in
gardens. It is refreshing to add peppermint leaves
to ice cream, rich meat-based dishes, uplifting
iced teas, salads and much more.
Records of peppermint have been traced back
to a few thousand years ago. You might even
think more clearly by inhaling some mint oil,
while it is said to also enhance energy and
concent ration.
This holiday season let the strong aromatics of
mint ease the traffic of food through your body.

KOMANI author of the
criticised the ANC about the state
of politics in the country during
his book launch last week.
Mfenyana, speaking at the town
the party were power hungry and
no longer committed to improving
the lives of ordinary people.
The apartheid struggle stalwart
said some political leaders’ main
aim was to enrich themselves and
their families at the expense of
“We need to mobilise members
and potential leaders who will
uphold the vision and mission of
the ANC. People are now joining
the party for political positions or
to get tenders.”
Mfenyana said he wrote the
book because he felt he owed it to
his family, friends and people in
He said the new
from Ezibeleni – were
SENIOR citizens from around
Komani were treated to a
the Dugmore Hall.
The lunch was coordinated by
St John’s Methodist Church
his wife, Samantha, with the help
of their children.
Regional Reverend Dr Craig
to organise the event and invite
the elderly from various
churches and communities to
spend the day being spoiled and
ser ved.
“We invited people who are
aged 70 years and above. We
wanted the senior citizens to
have a good time and forget
about their daily routine. Most
importantly, we wanted to give
Harriers want gifts for kids
THE Queenstown Harriers have
embarked on an ambitious project –
and with your help, they may just be
able to achieve it.
Upon hearing that 700 children are
in foster care in the Komani area, the
local running club was so moved that
they initiated a project to try and get
a gift for each child by December 11.
They’re asking locals to buy a gift,
valued at R30, wrap it (or if you are
not able to wrap it, leave it
unwrapped) and to drop it at the
Harriers clubhouse in Frost Street on
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays
for power, referring to the
provincial elective conference
which had ANC members throwing
chairs.
Mfenyana has been made the
electoral chairperson for the 54th
ANC conference set to take place
in December. The voting system
would be strict to avoid attempts
to manipulate votes.
“No phones or pieces of paper
will be allowed in the voting
booth. These are just some of the
few measures that will be taken
into account to restore trust and
honesty in the voting system.”
The book is available from
Keen’s Stationers in Komani.
Elderly treated to
A main course and dessert
were served and small gifts
handed out. Representatives
from each table took turns to
thank the organisers for the
social gathering.
Alexander, who was also the
chef for the day, said he was
overwhelmed by the support
shown by the locals who helped
make the event a success. He
attributed most of the hard work
to his wife.
“We had three months to
prepare for this day and were
fortunate as we received
sponsorships from local
businesses and individuals.”
Samantha said they had
expected about 140 people, but
due to other commitments and a
lack of transport, some people
could not attend.
She said it was hoped that
next year’s event would be even
bigger and better.
DJ Crazy making strides
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
MVUZO Tafeni, affectionately
known by his stage name of DJ
Crazy, has made significant
strides at the national one-day
DJ competition called Bokwa in
Johannesburg this month.
Tafeni, who grew up in zone 1,
Ezibeleni, said he first fell in love
with music in 2007.
“There was a guy whose name
I cannot remember who used to
teach us how to DJ. There were
three of us. I had started with
compiling house music while I
was still at WB Rubusana High
School,” he said.
“In 2009, I left music and
focused on my books as I was
studying information technology
at Walter Sisulu University in
East London. I acquired a
diploma in information
technology in 2012 and after I
had completed varsity, I returned
to being a DJ again.”
Though music is Tafeni’s
passion, cracking into a niche
market in East London came
with challenges as he said East
London’s clubs and DJs were not
really inclusive if you did not
originate there.
“I used to DJ in clubs in
Mdantsane, town and Quigney.
DJs in EL will give you a chance,
but if you do a good job, they
will not give you another chance.
If you are originally from EL,
even if you are a bad DJ, they
will support you fully,” he said.
He continued, saying clubs in
Komani were similar to those in
EL, in that they did not afford
opportunities to young DJs to
show their skills. Even the guest
DJs offer to play free. He said
resident club DJs were not
appreciated by club managers
e i t h e r.
Tafeni said, “DJs are not paid
much by club owners. I am not
putting money ahead of what I
do, but where I am the resident
DJ in Port Elizabeth, there is a
club owner and promoter, so it
hurts when they hire someone
for R20000 and you see that you
could have done better than the
guest while you are not paid
much.
“You are promised that they
will host an event where the DJ
will get 60% and they will get
40% of profits made, but that
never happens. My cousin is
thinking of quitting because he
is tired of the way we are
treated. You get tired and do not
want to go to the club, but when
are called you feel bad and go,
because you love what you do.”
Tafeni said he had shared the
stage with the likes of DJ Tira,
Heavy K Busiswa, Rulfgum, DJ
Cristos and Naaq Music and
competed in a national one-day
DJ competition in Johannesburg
this year called Bokwa, where
they had to play a mix that kept
MVUZO TAFENI
the dancers on the floor, and
Tafeni says he ended in the top
three.
“I found out about the
competition on Facebook. I
thought it was a kwaito DJ
competition, but I knew one of
the dancers and they said I could
also enter. When I was in the top
three, DJ Clock asked if I was
from Johannesburg and after
telling him I was from Komani,
he said if I kept it up I could be
like DJ Coffee, because I had
something different,” Tafeni said.
Tafeni said for a month from
the end of April next year he
would be the DJ at Ibiza in Playa
D’en Bossa. He advised pupils
aspiring to be DJs in Komani not
to rely on the profession alone,
but to have a back up of
e d u c at i o n .
He works as an IT technician
and has his own reliable income.
True fabric of great
service at Jacksons
HAPPY of Komani writes:
Last week I went to Jacksons
Fabrics, looking for a small
piece of very specific fabric. I
had almost done the rounds
of all the shelves when a tall,
smiling man whom I presume
to be the manager
(unfortunately I did not ask
his name), offered to help.
We did not find anything
suitable and I told him not to
worry as I only wanted about
a metre.
I was in my car waiting for
the boom to lift when he
came to call me, asking me
to park again and come
inside. He said he had
Why did EMLM say no to intervention?
CONCERNED ratepayer of Komani
w r i te s : The ‘’no’’ to provincial
intervention by the Enoch Mgijima
Local Municipality came as a grave
shock (The Rep, November 17).
As the editorial opinion stated, the
executive mayor Lindiwe Gunuza
Nkwentsha was quoted in the Daily
Dispatch as being keen that the MEC
must invoke Section 139 (1) (a) of the
Constitution, surely as having been
informed by the concrete conditions.
The question asked by the office of
the Cogta MEC Fikile Xasa that the
municipality must give him reasons
why he should not put it under
administration has been left
unanswered. This question is
informed by the assessment of the
discontinued line which
might be what I was looking
for and if I would wait a
minute, he would fetch them
for me to look at.
It was exactly the right
thing!
I would like to publicly
thank him for his excellent
service, smiling and helpful
and really going the extra
mile. One is rarely greeted in
shops these days and a smile
is as scarce as hen’s teeth,
while an offer to help just
does not happen.
Thank you, sir, you made
my day and reminded me of
the old saying, “Service with
a smile”.
ZWELIBANGILE Modi
of Ezibeleni writes: If
the Zimbabweans
thinks that the
intervention of the
army in Zimbabwe
politics will result in
their real freedom and
democracy, they must
think again.
They can kiss
goodbye their wish for
the government of the
people as anyone who
will be anointed by the
army, will just be a
puppet who will take
orders from the
militar y.
History has taught
us that stability
vanishes in a state
where democratic
means have not been
employed in the
MEC that the municipal council is
facing a slippery slope and on its
own can not turn the situation
around. Hence, an olive branch is
being offered.
Such an irresponsible response
that the debt was incurred by three
local municipalities (Tsolwana,
Lukhanji and Inkwanca) before the
merger leaves much to be desired,
and seems to be forgetting that some
of these councillors were serving in
these municipalities Councillor
Noluthando Nqabisa falls short to
explain, from August last year, what
measures have been put into place to
address the situation. Have the
communities been informed to jointly
look at an amicable solution? This is
Zimbabwe in
for rough ride
change of government
– look at Iraq, Libya,
Sudan and many other
countries where coups
have taken place.
Even the opposition
parties in Zimbabwe
who seem to be
thinking that there will
now be free elections
or free political
activities in that
country, should think
again. They may even
be banned by the
a r m y.
Mugabe will go but
the political problems
are just about to begin
and those who rejoice
now, will be greatly
surprised by the turn
of events in the near
future.
in line with your responsibility as
elected representatives to play an
oversight role.
I wonder if you are aware that you
have failed to uphold and defend the
Constitution. Chapter 7, Section 152
(1) (2) prescribes the objects of local
government . Your Worship, good
governance is accountable. The
council has an obligation to report,
explain and be answerable for the
consequences of decisions it has
made on behalf of the community.
Furthermore, people must be able to
clearly see how and why a decision
was made and what information,
advice and consultation council
considered and which legislative
requirements were followed.

A
WORKING relationship between a
local business, Lazy 8 Trust, and the
largest Merino wool top-maker in
China, Tianyu, is not only breathing life into
a former disused factory in Queendustria
but also boosting the wool export business.
Lazy 8 Trust was formed on March 1, 2013, as
a steel/wool company. The business started
buying wool for Lempriere SA CC which was
then processed by BKB. Business took another
turn earlier this year when Lazy 8 decided to
start dealing with Tianyu South Africa Pty Ltd.
The processing of wool is done in Komani and
then exported directly to China. Cutting out
the middleman means that Lazy 8 can now
buy the wool for a better price from emerging
farmers in the district and surrounding areas.
With branches in Maclear, Ugie and Komani,
the Lazy 8 and Tianyu partnership is already
paying dividends. The wool is being transported
from the Ugie and Maclear branches to the
Queenstown branch where processing is done
into types which are core tested. Samples
are sent to the wool testing bureau SA in
Port Elizabeth and results are sent back to
the local business. The Maclear branch is
managed by Gordon Shuman, assisted by Nikky
Bezuidenhout as office administrator with
Nozukile Mankayi as assistant store manager.
MAKING WORK OF IT: Son and Father, Marc and Steven Dell
With the sourcing office of Tianyu based in
due to the demand for South African wool, Tianyu
good advice
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
S
MALL Enterprise Development Agency (Seda)
training specialist Nomahlubi Boloshe said
the most saturated markets in Komani were
the catering business, construction
companies and law firms.
Boloshe was speaking at a start-up business
workshop which was organised by the Black
Management Forum and Eastern Cape Development
Corporation at the Cooperative House on Thursday.
The three-day training session for existing and
aspiring entrepreneurs started on Tuesday.
She said the competition was high in the
aforementioned industries, with most caterers and
contractors depending on government departments
and municipal contracts for jobs.
“We want people to consider the limited chances
in this regard. We are not stopping them from
opening these businesses but we are trying to open
their eyes to other business opportunities that exist.”
Boloshe said one of the motivations of the
workshop was for the participants to come up with
five business ideas.
“We are encouraging them to go to their
communities to find out what services are needed
but which are not currently provided. We will then
conduct market research to see if the ideas are
fe a s i b l e .”
One of the challenges faced by small enterprises
was a lack of discernment between the benefits and
the disadvantages of a sole propriety, close
corporations, partnerships and a company.
She said participants should develop
entrepreneurial qualities.
“To develop entrepreneurial skills we did a swat
analysis which focused on the strength and
weaknesses of an individual and the opportunities.”
Boloshe said after the training they hoped for
participants to get the businesses registered in
Seda's database.
She said small enterprises needed to invest in
marketing. “Big businesses make themselves visible
via branding, but the same can not be said about
township businesses. They must learn how bigger
businesses market themselves and come up with
ways on how to emulate them in an affordable
manner. ”
are, however, blissfully
unaware that they could
open themselves to
significant liability and
damage risks if their
insurance covers are not
correctly scoped.
“While the prospect of
to do so from an
Barrett of insurance
brokerage and risk
advisers Aon South
Africa.
Aon points out a few
aspects to consider:
ýIf there are no
signs of forcible or
violent entry, the loss of
stolen or damaged
goods is generally not
covered;
ýIf you have a clause
in your insurance policy
that requires an alarm
system to be activated,
you could be at risk if
your paying guests did
not set the alarm before
leaving the house;
ýAs soon as you
bring paying guests into
your home, you become
liable for any personal
injury-related claims
incident of a criminal
nature, the personal
belongings of your
paying guests will not
be covered.
“It is highly advisable
to seek the advice of an
insurance broker to
protect against loss and
liability when renting
out,” said Barrett.
“While many letting
platforms such as Airbnb
offer limited insurance
cover for its property
owners, it’s highly
advisable to declare the
changed risk to your
insurance broker to
avoid an instance where
a claim is repudiated on
the grounds of
non-disclosure,” she
explained.
Some insurance
providers are also able
through a personal lines
policy, under conditions
and set limits pertaining
to:
ýThe number of
rooms that are used for
paying guests;
ýLoss or damage of
personal effects of
ýLoss or damage
PRIMEPROPER TY
Economy puts brakes
on the sellers’ market
SA property markets are feeling the pinch
THE property market
has shifted notably
over the last 18 months
as the fall-out from the
weak political and
economic climate, poor growth
and credit downgrades
continue. The inevitable result,
said Seeff Property Group
chairman Samuel Seeff, is that
this rather good performing
economic sector, is now also
taking strain.
Where it was a sellers’
market until early last year, we
have seen a progressive shift
this year which has manifested
in lower demand and rising
stock levels, combined with a
decline in buyer confidence,
flat price growth and deals
taking longer to conclude.
The outcome, is that we
head into 2018 with a buyer’s
market for most areas, even
some Cape locations.
Of concern, he added, is
that there is still a lag on the
sellers’ side of the equation
with price expectations out of
step with the market.
The result, he said, is an
overall weaker market with
low levels of liquidity that now
favours buyers in most areas.
Overall, the market is down
by about 15%-20% from the
2015 highs. Yet, said Seeff, we
operated this year with slightly
improved fundamentals
compared to last year, being a
lower repo rate (6.75% v 7% in
2016) and slower inflation
(5.3% v 6.5% in 2016).
Even the stand-out Cape is
beginning to slow down
although it continues to
benefit from a broad base of
demand such as the constant
flow of semigrating buyers
INTERNATIONAL PROPERTY GROUP
from other areas, investment
and holiday demand.
Seeff noted the reported
slow-down in semigration is
also attributable to the slow
rate of sales in other
provinces, combined with the
high prices in the Cape which
has now also put a dampener
on this market.
R2-million remains the most
active, but very susceptible to
financial strain.
The upper end, despite
being able to better absorb
economic fluctuations, said
Seeff, has seen a notable
slow-down in the Gauteng
market above R5-million and
in the Cape above R8-million
and above R18-million on the
Atlantic Seaboard. The holiday
and investment market has
also slowed as an inevitable
fall-out from the weak
confidence levels.
Seeff noted further that the
finance minister painted a
subdued outlook in his mini
budget and we are in for a
tough economy and property
market next year. While by no
means gloom and doom, it is a
period of prudence ahead for
proper t y.
While looking forward to a
busier summer period,
especially the first part of the
year when there is always
higher activity, the biggest
challenge for the economy and
market remains the unstable
political climate and poor
economic decision-making, he
said.
That said, history has shown
SA property to be a good
The Real Estate Leaders
investment with growth rates
that generally outpace
inflation during a positive
economic phase as we have
seen over the last few years.
Property remains a good
investment, especially if it is
your primary home. Seeff
reiterated that there is nothing
more important than owning
the roof over your head as it
provides stability and a base
upon which to build a life and
wealth.
Regardless of the state of
the economy, Seeff said there
will always be people who
need to buy or sell for a
variety of reasons and there is
opportunity in every market.
Every economy and property
market goes through cycles
and it is always best to take a
long-term view, he concluded.
NEW SCHOOL: Grade 7 pupils Libhongo Guzana, 11, left, and Akhona Mpangeva, 12, from the
Sophumelela Primary School in Keiskammahoek, one of the successful schools newly built by the
CDC on behalf of the Eastern Cape department of basic education in 2014
Coega on track with
its education plans
THE Coega Development
Corporation (CDC) has
reacted in response to the In
Touch column, “Weep for the
many poor children of SA”
(November 10), in The Rep as
being factually misleading.
In a statement, Simlindele
Manqina, who is responsible for
communications and stakeholder
relations: business relations at
Coega, said the CDC had seen the
successful completion of more
than 90% of school projects
allocated to it by the Eastern
Cape Department of Education.
“The CDC, as an implementing
agent of the Eastern Cape
Department of Education
(ECDoE), supports the
department with delivery of
enabling infrastructure, and has
made inroads in addressing the
schools infrastructure backlog
throughout the Eastern Cape,
within the mandate of projects
allocated to the CDC by the
depar tment.“
The CDC had remained one of
the top performing implementing
agents in the country and EC out
of many contracted to the
department in the infrastructure
development programme. The
CDC has, to date, managed to
successfully complete well over
500 projects, accumulatively
valued at R1.27-billion since 2006.
On the backdrop of the slow
approval rate of project scope and
budget to implementing agents
by the Eastern Cape depar tment
of education, the 900 schools
mentioned in the column have
materialised to 750 that have
moved forward with a viable
construction implementation.
The CDC’s participation in
infrastructure to schools like
Lumko High School at Amalinda
in East London, Sea Vista Primary
School, AV Bukani Primary School
and Mzingisi Primary School, all
in Uitenhage, Isikhoba Nombewu
Technical High School,
Gxwalubomvu Junior Secondary
School both in Cofimvaba, have
been nothing short of a miracle
when compared with before the
CDC became involved.
“As a demonstration of the
CDC’s commitment to ensuring it
delivers timeously on projects
allocated to it, the CDC has
recorded some key milestones in
the infrastructure programme
through the successful
completion of school projects
within budget, scope and time.”
In the financial year 2014-15,
the CDC was allocated 110
sanitation projects by the
department valued at
R146-million. The organisation
achieved an impressive success
rate of 96% with 103 of the
projects completed successfully
and handed over to the
depar tment.
In the financial year 2015-16 the
CDC was allocated 159 school
fencing projects and recorded a
75% success rate, with 120 of the
projects completed successfully,
with the remainder transferred to
the following year due to budget
constraints from the department.
In the 2016-17 year, the CDC
was allocated 108 temporary
classrooms, with a success rate
of 69% with 75 of the projects
completed successfully. The
remainder was transferred to the
following year due to budget
constraints from the department.
“The statement –‘The
department pays the money to
Coega which then takes between
6 and 10% of the budget as
management fees ...’ Once again,
as a demonstration of the
misinformation visited upon the
CDC in the article by Phumelele P
Hlati is considered to be
economical with the truth.
Implementing Agent management
fees are prescribed by National
Treasury and provincial treasur y,
and payments are made strictly
on the basis of department
verification of deliverables from
the CDC. In accordance with
treasury stipulations, the
department does not advance
funds to the CDC for
implementation or management
fe e s . ”
The CDC, as a state-owned
entity, was audited by the
Auditor-General of South Africa.
Dating back since the inception of
the CDC, the organisation had
consistently received an
unqualified audit opinion,
including for the past financial
y e a r.
“As such, the unsubstantiated
information contained in the
column is best described as an
attack on the integrity and good
standing of the CDC.”
Project steering committees
consisting of the Eastern Cape
department of education, SGBs
and principals were established
to support the CDC and project
team with the construction stage
implementation. Prior to the
construction stage, departmental
officials participated in planning
stage activities to ensure and
approve the project scope, cost
and quality of infrastructure
deliverables align with the
gazetted norms and standards
and education department
strategic priorities.
Career roadshows
and LO seminars
THE Chris Hani District
Agency (CHDA) is
partnering with institutions
of higher learning in embarking
on career seminars and road
shows targeting life orientation
(LO) teachers.
The objective of these
seminars is to provide the
teachers with basic orientation
to career development and
information on post-school
education and training
opportunities. CHDA partnered
with the finance and
accounting services seta
(Fasset), bank seta (Bseta), the
department of higher education
and training (DHET) and the
department of basic education.
A career workshop was held
in Cradock for two days where
40 Grade 7 LO teachers from
Hofmeyr, Middelburg and
Cradock schools participated.
The two-day teacher
workshop was followed by a
two-day roadshow programme
that targeted schools in the
three towns, where about 1800
pupils from historically
disadvantaged schools
benefited from the programme.
Shortly afterwards CHDA and
partners held a career seminar
for pupils at Cofimvaba High
School where 2 162 grade 9
learners from 52 schools
throughout the Cofimvaba area
par ticipated.
Thanks to the partnership, the
Chris Hani East education
department Grade 9 LO
preliminary examination paper
included career choice-related
questions and was followed by
a career dress-up programme.
The seminar evaluation,
conducted by the DHET and
CHDA through the seminar
evaluation forms, reflected that
the model was welcomed by
both teachers and pupils.
As a result, the model was
then rolled out to the entire
dist rict.
Court
victory
for Hebe
family
ANDISA BONANI
THE Bhisho High Court has set aside the
removal of Viwe Hebe as the senior traditional
leader of the AbaThembu Traditional Council in
Whittlesea after a prolonged dispute of the
position by AmaTshatshu tribe member Sabelo
K at s i .
The battle between Hebe of the AmaNgxongo
tribe and Katsi over who should be the rightful
leader of the council in the Hewu district
started in 1997 when Hebe’s father died.
Katsi claimed the tribe to which Hebe
belonged had no historical connection to
Whittlesea and that the family had no royal
blood.
The Commission on Traditional Leadership
Disputes and Claims investigated the claim and
made a recommendation that Katsi be
appointed as chief.
The dispute between two traditional leaders
over the chieftainship of the AbaThembu
traditional community of Zweledinga was
further fuelled by the recommendation - upheld
by the then premier Noxolo Kieviet - to certify
Katsi as a traditional leader while Hebe was still
in the position.
Bhisho High Court deputy judge president
David van Zyl who presided over the case, made
findings that dealt with the unlawfulness of the
implementation of the Act governing
chieftainship disputes.
He ruled that the failure to remove Hebe from
his position was found to have rendered the
appointment of Katsi unlawful and was
subsequently et aside.
Katsi contested the appointment and laid a
claim that he was rightfully the chief of the
senior traditional leadership of the abaThembu
traditional council.
He also claimed the area had been under the
leadership of AmaTshatshu before the Hebe
family relocated to Glen Grey and that Hebe’s
father rose to the throne due to political
influence and manoeuvring in the former Ciskei
government.
Speaking to The Rep, royal family chairman
Myeke Hebe said the family was pleased with
the outcome of the case and hoped the matter
would be put to rest so that the family could
focus on more important things like leading the
AbaThembu Traditional Council.
Matter of fact
THE Rep indicated last week (“Police in
Whittlesea need more cars”, November 17)
that Lieutenant-Colonel Khutala Taleni had
said she sometimes had to borrow police
vehicles from colleagues in other
departments in the Whittlesea police
station. She said she had meant other
sections of the police stations.

Taxi body helps after fire
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
UNCEDO Taxi Association
Ilinge branch members
donated items to bring
relief to an 88-year-old
woman, Nolisin Notyhawa,
whose house burnt down in
the township last Sunday.
Notyhawa, who lives with
her four grandchildren, was
visiting the family of a
deceased community member
at the time of the incident.
She said it was around 3pm
when she was informed of the
fire.
“The fire was caused by my
five-year-old grandchild who
had found a box of matches
and lit them under the bed
while looking for something.”
Notyhawa, who was still
struggling to come to terms
with the situation, said she
was grateful that her
grandchildren had survived.
She was currently living in
an informal settlement with
the children.
“My desire is to return to my
old house or to at least move
to a more spacious room
because I feel confined living
in a shack.”
She said her children lived
out of town and one of them
would come home over
w e e ke n d s .
Uncedo public relations
officer Fuyizizwe Solani said
after hearing the news, he,
chairman Xolile Weli, and
Donations aim to assist aged woman
REACHING OUT: Uncedo Taxi Association Ilinge branch members with items donated to
Nolisin Notyhawa, whose house was gutted recently
secretary Siphokazi Rojithe
went to look at the house.
“We found everything
damaged up to roof level. The
furniture was destroyed. We
took it upon the association to
assist the family because the
people who support the taxi
industry, are community
members.
“We made a collection of
clothes, blankets and some
other items. We also gave the
family R1000 and there are
still people who plan to make
contributions to assist the
fa m i l y, ” Solani said.
Ilinge White Door Hope
Cent re’s Xolile Mali said the
fire was put out by community
members using soil and other
methods as water was scarce
in Ilinge.
Mali said the fire brigade
arrived almost three hours
l at e r.
Ward councillor Mzwandile
Thole had also paid the family
a visit and had written a letter
to Chris Hani Disaster
Management on Notyhawa’s
b e h a l f.
The department of home
affairs and South African
Social Security Agency were
assisting her with identity
documents, the children’s
birth certificates and the
fa m i l y ’s grant cards.
Notyhawa said she was
grateful for the support she
had received from the
community. It was
overwhelming and
unexpected.
“This time of the year
going into January is
also the most
dangerous of the year,
with more people
involved in fatal
crashes now than at
any other time,”
warned the Automobile
Association (AA) this
week.
“It is for this reason
the Automobile
Association urges all
motorists to ensure
their vehicles are in
good condition and
BREAKERS R.F.C
roadworthy, and that
their attitudes towards
driving, especially over
long distances, are
also in a good
condition.”
To ensure the best
possible experience on
the road, the AA has
encouraged motorists
to get their vehicles
checked out in good
time, and to make sure
they are mentally
prepared for their
journeys.
Tips:
ýPlan your route,
including stops, and
ensure you make
provision to stop every
200km or every two
hours to rest, refuel and
refresh.
ýLook at the
planning of your trip
and avoid the rush days
Time: Gates open at 10H00
With age on his side, it is hoped that
can celebrate another Springbok.
the bottom half of the
East London on Sunday.
Stirling won the
50-over match after
scoring 255 all out after
they had won the toss
and elected to bat first,
a decision that at first
appeared unwise, as
they lost three early
wickets, thanks to
Anathi Joe who ended
with the figures of one
for 10, and later 47 for
4.
After the first three
wickets fell, a good
performance followed in
the form of two Stirling
batsmen. Their
partnership rendered
139 runs off 179 balls,
including six sixes, and
ten fours. They put the
of enthusiasm by
2018
SEAN HEIDEMANN
LAST Saturday the golf club hosted the
highly successful Southbourne golf
day and the members of the
organising comittee must be
congratulated on a well run and
innovative day.
A wonderful addition to the event,
which I hope will be the norm for future
fundraising golf days, was the scholars’
and beginners’ sections which teed off
before the main field. It was refreshing to
see such a large number of youngsters
taking part.
Every golfer was spoilt, a highlight
being the steak roll at halfway.
boys’ section.
Among the non golfers T.Koli finished
Wagener second on 35 and Jacques van
der Schyf third on 26.
In the women’s section young Sarah du
take first place on 49 points and Ana
Taggart was second on 36 points on a
count out from Elaine Walker.
The men’s division was won by
L.Strauss on 41 points with Wayne
Bennett second on 39 on a count out
from Chicken Meyer with the same score.
Girls’ High School players participated
in force, with Tatum Bosch, Carla van
in the nine holes for beginners.
In the individual Stableford over 18
holes, GHS’ Erin Barraud shot 115 and
an exceptional event.
be
Smit’s
year?
MAXWELL LEVINE
ONE of the brightest
prospects to come out
of Komani, Roelof Smit,
is hoping that 2018 will
be his year.
It will be a year in
which Smit plans to
ignite the rugby fields
with renewed energy
and enthusiasm after
suffering a spell on the
sidelines through injury.
The year 2016 was a
near-perfect period for
the openside flanker,
after having been an
integral member of the
Blue Bulls Super Rugby
team and in the Currie
Cup team. He was
rewarded for his stellar
performances in both
competitions with a
call-up to the
Springboks for the
Northern Hemisphere
Castle Lager outgoing
The 24-year-old
former Hangklip pupil
grabbed hold of the
opportunity with both
hands and topped it off
with a brilliant
performance for the
Springboks XV in their
31-31 draw against the
Barbarians, scoring one
of the five tries. He was
included in the squad
for the rest of the tour
as the only openside
f l a n ke r.
Smit was set to make
his full Springbok debut
against England when
injury struck. He
sustained a torn
pectoral muscle during
training, a huge
setback for the talented
player who had to
return to South Africa
disappointed.
As if that setback
was not enough, after
returning to full fitness
earlier this year, the
injury nightmare struck
again. Smit was dealt a
massive blow after
injuring his medial
collateral ligament
upon his return to
action for the Bulls
against the Sharks in
the Rugby Challenge in
June.
With this unfortunate
run of injuries, his
hopes of Super Rugby
and a return to the
Springboks was
eradicated for this year.
Smit, who has spent
the last five years at the
Bulls and as a former
Junior Springbok, hopes
to earn more
opportunities in the near
