A Quarterly Community Relations Report
WINTER 2017
Since our beginnings in 1961, Mission Fed has been dedicated to strengthening and improving the communities in which we
live, work and play. Through partnerships with schools and over 200 nonprofit organizations directly committed to a
healthier, stronger, vibrant and resilient San Diego County, we’re on a mission to ensure that San Diego’s success is our
bottom line. We hope you take pride in reading about this past year’s achievements and learn more about how we came
together to drive positive transformation throughout the San Diego community.
Our Commitment to Ethical Practices
We can all share in the good news that on November 28, Mission Fed received the
2017 BBB Torch Award for Ethics, category 500+ employees, from the Better Business
Bureau of San Diego, Orange and Imperial Counties. This award recognizes Mission Fed
for its commitment to operate in an ethical manner and its strong commitment to integrity,
customer service and community involvement. The BBB Torch Award reinforces
Mission Fed’s reputation as an organization that is committed to serving our membership
and giving back to the local community using ethical business practices. Mission Fed’s
President and CEO Debra Schwartz accepted the BBB Torch Award on behalf of our
members, community partners, employees and volunteer Board of Directors. Mission Fed
continues to demonstrate service excellence every day through our people, products and
support of the local community.
Fighting Food Insecurity throughout San Diego
Throughout the month of September, Mission Fed was proud to support the fight
against childhood hunger by partnering with ABC 10 and the Jacobs & Cushman
San Diego Food Bank on their Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. This
program provides weekend backpacks of food to over 1,900 elementary school
students living in poverty who receive free meals at school, but face hunger at
home over the weekend when free school meals are unavailable. In collaboration
with our radio and television media partners and with the support of our
members, staff and online donations, our donation totaled $21,204 and will
provide 4,241 food-filled backpacks to hungry children and their families.
Inspiring Leadership and Philanthropy
In November, Junior Achievement (JA) of San Diego
County held its 29th Annual San Diego Business Hall of
Fame at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. The Gala supports JA’s
mission to impact 81,500 students each year by teaching them
how to apply for a job, start a business and manage their money.
The event also served as a celebration of the best in business
through philanthropy and inducted the 2017 Lifetime Laureates
into the Junior Achievement of San Diego Business Hall of
Fame. Mission Fed has served as a partner of JA for over a
decade. We’re proud that our financial support, especially of
McGrath Family JA BizTown and Mission Fed JA Finance Park,
prepares San Diego students for career and financial success.
JA Student Ambassadors hosted the Gala and greeted the guests, sharing their stories on how JA has impacted their lives.
The Return of Taste of
Carlsbad Village
Mission Fed was proud to help bring
back the Taste of Carlsbad
Village and serve as the title sponsor
for this sold out event. Over 500 people
strolled through the streets of Carlsbad
for the return of the annual foodie
event. Hosted by the Carlsbad Village
Association, the event showcased the
city’s flourishing culinary scene with
30 local eateries, 10 sip stops and
musical acts spread throughout
downtown Carlsbad.
In the midst of the public’s concern over consumer safety and
identity theft, we’re proud of the leadership role that our
President and CEO Debra Schwartz and Mission Fed have
taken to communicate the importance to remain vigilant during
these times. In her role as Board Treasurer of the National
Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU),
Debra visited Capitol Hill to deliver remarks during a
congressional hearing on Data Security: Vulnerabilities
and Opportunities for Improvement. Locally, Debra
appeared on Good Morning San Diego (KUSI) where she
shared her knowledge, tips and recommendations on how
consumers can help protect their personal and financial data,
topics of much importance during the holiday season and in
light of recent data breaches.
Philanthropy is “the love of humankind,” and
National Philanthropy Day (NPD), November 15,
is the day that thousands of people around the world
come together to put that word into action and
recognize the change philanthropy has brought to
our communities. In San Diego, Mission Fed proudly
supported this year’s National Philanthropy Day at
the Del Mar Fairgrounds, an event devoted to the
celebration of philanthropy—giving, volunteering
and charitable engagement—that highlighted the
accomplishments, large and small, that philanthropy
and all those involved in the philanthropic process
have made to our region. Organized by the
San Diego Chapter of the Association of Fundraising
Professionals (AFPSD), NPD 2017 brought together
hundreds of San Diegans to recognize the positive
change that philanthropy has brought to our
communities and to highlight how they, or their
organization, are helping to change the world.
Supporting Crucial
Conservation
Mission Fed has been a longtime
supporter of the San Diego Zoo and a
sponsor of Kids Free in October since
2011, a program that allows kids free
entry to San Diego Zoo and Safari
Park. Throughout the month of October,
the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park
had over 400,000 visitors, with over
70,000 free kids admissions. As part
of our partnership, Mission Fed also
presented a $5,000 donation to the
San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife
Conservancy to help combat
wildlife trafficking and support crucial
conservation projects worldwide.
Dia de los Muertos at the
San Luis Rey Mission
Mission Fed joined over 40,000 attendees at the largest
festival of its kind in San Diego County, Dia de los
Muertos at the San Luis Rey Mission in Oceanside.
Dia de los Muertos is the annual Mexican Celebration
of the Day of the Dead and is an all-day community
event with diverse cultural traditions to remember and
honor deceased loved ones. On October 29, the Mission
showcased traditional marigold altars, native Oaxacan
dances and entertainment, carnival rides and a classic
car show.
SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Caring for our Beaches
On September 2, in partnership with
the San Diego County Chapter of
Surfrider Foundation and FM 94/9,
Mission Fed joined 200 volunteers as part
of an Oceanside beach cleanup. Participants
helped to remove trash and recyclables from
the beach, pier and parking lot area to help
ensure that no marine animals succumb to
the plastic waste in our ocean. Mission Fed
is proud to be part of the cleanup efforts
that protect and restore our beaches and
coastal parks for all to enjoy.
Nutritious Food to
People in Need
In September, 22 volunteers comprised of
Mission Fed teammates, family and friends
visited the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego
Food Bank at the nonprofit’s warehouse
food-packing and distribution hub. Together,
the volunteers filled over 700 backpacks of
food for kids, packed 803 boxes for seniors
and prepared over 20,660 meals in under
two hours.
Discoveries Made at
Local Museums
This October, Mission Fed partnered
with the San Diego Museum
Council on its annual Kids Free
in October program and provided
nearly 20,000 kids free admission
to over 43 art, cultural and science
museums in San Diego County.
Kids Free in October was an
opportunity for thousands of families
to enjoy museum experiences and learn
about everything from dinosaurs and
military heroes to astronauts and
artists. These opportunities allow
kids to explore cultural destinations
and attractions throughout the
San Diego region—from the
California Surf Museum in
Oceanside to the Living Coast
Discovery Center in Chula Vista.
Celebrating 100 Years of
Girl Scouts San Diego
This September, Girl Scouts San Diego celebrated
its 100th anniversary with a 20th edition of its
fundraiser for grown-ups, the Urban Campout.
Mission Fed was there to celebrate this fun-filled
event at the Girl Scout Lodge on the Balboa
Campus. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser
will help Girl Scouts San Diego provide more
than 23,000 local girls with life skills, opportunities
in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math) and leadership programs that challenge
girls to venture outdoors, volunteer in their
communities and have fun learning.
Purpose-Driven Leadership
Mission Fed was a proud sponsor of
the 2017 Cause Conference,
the West Coast’s premier event for
entrepreneurs, marketers and business
leaders of purpose-driven organizations.
The Cause Conference delivered an
exhilarating, educational and impactful
conference experience empowering
hundreds of attendees. Led by the
San Diego American Marketing
Association, Conscious Capitalism
San Diego and The San Diego
Nonprofit Association, the conference
included Mission Fed’s Neville
Billimoria, SVP Membership and
Marketing (shown above), who
served as both a speaker and
conference co-chair.
MAX Out My Class
Congratulations to all the teachers and schools across our county who
were winners in the MAX Out My Class program! The weekly
program continues to make a major impact around San Diego
County and provides winning teachers and their classrooms with
a $200 gift card allowing students to get the tools, supplies and
experiences they need for a great education. This season, MAX held
a special event and awarded Debbi Turner, Los Coches Creek
Middle School 6th Grade English and History Teacher, a special
contribution of $1,000 in acknowledgment of her and her
students’ compassion and generosity. Ms. Turner and her
students reached out to KIPP 3D Academy in Houston, a school
with families who had been impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
Through her classroom’s fundraising efforts, students at KIPP
received gift cards that allowed their families to purchase
day-to-day essentials crucial to their well-being. Ms. Turner’s
students helped to rebuild not only hearts but homes and
lives as well. In the words of Ms. Turner: “Programs like
yours help to feed our spirits with the positivity and love
that we need so desperately! Thank you for taking care
of the teachers of our great city!”
Mission Fed teammates in support of Autism
Speaks Walk.
Enhancing the Lives of
People with Autism
Mission Fed’s ongoing drive to make
San Diego not just America’s Finest
City, but “America’s Kindest Region”
focuses on a wide scope of targeted
efforts, including sponsoring
San Diego’s Autism Speaks
Walk. The walk helps fund vital
services and innovative solutions that
improve quality of life for people with
autism and ensures that resources
are provided for San Diego residents
impacted by autism. As thousands
across this community walked to
support the work of Autism Speaks, the
leading organization for science, support
and advocacy, all came with the same
goal and the same mission: to enhance
the lives of people with autism.
Employees Caring for the Community
At Mission Fed, we bring our mission statement to life every day, including “caring
for our community.” One of the ways we do that is through our Care Wear
program, which allows Mission Fed employees to wear casual attire on designated
days by making a donation to local nonprofits. This year, Care Wear donations
were given to Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association and Operation
for HOPE Foundation. Mission Fed presented both organizations with a $1,594
donation. Funds for Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association will help these
nonprofits continue to provide recreational and competitive adaptive sports in San Diego County for children and adults
with physical disabilities. Our donation to Operation for HOPE Foundation will serve to support the organization’s
mission to raise awareness about domestic violence and offer resources to prevent and respond to this issue.
Your success is our bottom line.
