Feature
Challenging
the OEM’s
The paperless office is still a long way off, but technology and
cloud connectivity and a mobile-savvy generation entering the
workplace all contribute to a reduction in printing. That’s not
the end of printing, but the market is contracting, and the
OEM’s have been subtly upping their game to maximise their
profitability and market share.
The sale of Lexmark to the Ninestar Corporation was the
biggie and was probably one of the best deals done so far.
The potential for Lexmark in the China / Asia market is
enormous. The challenge for the new owners is to marry up
the Lexmark channel expertise with the existing
organisational cultures to grow the three-billion-dollar OEM.
Samsung looked at the office printer market and decided
that exiting was the best strategy and HP bought
Samsung’s printer division. The challenge for HP is to bring
that together to offer a printer range fit for the market today.
A3 devices in an MPS environment indeed generate good
revenues and profitability. The challenge in a mature market
like Europe and North America is to persuade users to
switch from older A4 machines that they own to take on the
MPS model. HP has over five thousand global MPS
customers and generates over $15 billion (€12.7 billion) of
revenues from MPS. Acquiring Samsung will enable them to
push into the A3 printer market and increase sales
revenues. But has HP got the pedigree to absorb the
Samsung business? Their acquisition history with Compaq
THE RECYCLER • ISSUE 301 • DECEMBER 2017
and Autonomy were not their best by any means. But the
price tag for Samsung was reasonable and does give them
some room to operate.
Brother has a strong niche in the printer market, and
according to The Recycler's recent brand survey, over
eighty percent of respondents thought that the Brother
brand would be around in 2025. Not such good news for
the Dell, Lenovo, Oki, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and Utax
brands where respondents thought that these brands
would have disappeared by 2025.
Canon face their own series of challenges as HP now has
the printer technology to move forward without Canon. HP
will need to source consumables from Canon, the long-term
prognosis for the Canon / HP relationship can’t be as good
as it was. Added to that some of the critical printer and
consumable IP is getting old and could expire before 2025,
or even earlier.
The OEM brand strengths are their R&D and product
development, but it is also a weakness. A lot of the patents
surrounding printers and consumables are beginning to run
out, and they recognise this and have been driving through
market changes to get closer to the consumer, drive up
revenues and margin. MPS and similar programmes are
significant growth opportunities for all of the OEM vendors,
but as the market matures and becomes more
commoditised the challenge for the OEM’s will be how to
differentiate their offering. In a recent report commissioned
by HP, a survey by Quocirca said that 65 percent of
organisations surveyed expect MPS spend to rise in the
coming year.
FEATURE: Challenging the OEM’s
The changing landscape
The OEM landscape is changing, and some brands will
disappear, but the focus across the OEM brands is to drive
multi-brand MPS. MPS or contractual sales locks out the
aftermarket for the duration of the contract. As long as the
OEM performs well, there is a high probability that the deal
will be renewed.
The recent legal wins against Lexmark and Canon by
aftermarket companies will continue as aftermarket
companies defend their market share and challenge, rather
than roll-over. Each legal action will in time provide more
clarity for both OEM’s and remanufacturers and the scope
and scale of permissible remanufacturing activities.
Ever-increasing pressure
Politically and socially the OEM community will come under
ever-increasing pressure to embrace and facilitate
remanufacturing on every level. Those same forces will be
felt by manufacturers of new, non-OEM cartridges who, in
Europe will soon have to fund their WEEE responsibilities
and estimates put the possible cost at as much as eight
euros per cartridge. Making the current price model
unsustainable and drive the demand for all cartridges
placed on the market to be remanufactureable.
Is some form of licensing model the way forward? It has
often been muted that ultimately the OEM community will
have to engage proactively with the aftermarket community,
possibly through a licensing programme.
But do the economics work for the OEM? If you assume
that the aftermarket has a twenty percent market share
and licensing pricing is say five percent of the OEM’s
sales revenue it is possible for the OEM to generate a
more significant bottom line revenue through licensing.
But if there is a market growth of remanufacturing to say
twenty-five percent as a result of licensing they will
continue to increase bottom line revenues but would
generate a reduced sales revenue in their primary market
which is compounded when the market is contracting as it
currently is.
Some of the minor brands would significantly benefit from
licensing as the market contracts. If, as survey respondents
suggest some brands would disappear by 2025 then
leveraging in licensing programmes would be a way to
maximise their IP portfolio.
IP safe chips
Providing IP safe chips could be a way forward for OEM’s, and
certainly, one OEM is actively looking at this licensing model
for 2018. If that OEM does decide to go down the licensing
route, then expect the availability of the licensing to be strictly
controlled to avoid impacting their primary markets. But once
one OEM does it, the rest are likely to follow.
The aftermarket is feeling the effects of the OEM market
drive for MPS as well as the growing market for new, non-
OEM cartridges that are in the market and are taking market
share from both the OEM and remanufacturing community.
So just how does the rest of the aftermarket challenge the
OEM community to win a larger market share?
Two of the larger players in the remanufacturing sector
are Clover and Turbon. Clover is experiencing year-on-year
contraction in sales and profitability and carry a substantial
debt burden that requires ongoing servicing. Turbon is just
a tenth of the size of Clover but has seen a similar
contraction in their market, but fortunately is not highly
leveraged. Both companies have traditionally sold into the
office products sector and are not close to the end user.
Brandwise Turbon has invested in the IBM brand which
does have a good brand weight.
As a small business, you can’t change a market, but you
can change how you operate in that market and win more
revenue and margin. There is no simple remedy to make
the market shift, but a lot of small steps you can take to gain
more revenue and margin.
Market evolution – Success in the aftermarket requires an
understanding of how the market is changing. OEM trends
are prime drivers that flow through the market. Consumer
trends also impact on the overall shape of the market as
does the channel you operate in.
Market assessment – Do you sell the products and
services you produce, or do you produce the products and
services your customers want and is there a market for
those products and services.
Understand your customers – What do they do, how do
they do it and how can you help them improve their
performance and value you and your portfolio of products
4 THE RECYCLER • ISSUE 301 • DECEMBER 2017

Some of the minor brands would significantly
“benefit from licensing as the market contracts.
“
and services. A valued supplier is hard to supplant with
just a low-cost offering.
Review your portfolio - Does what you offer fit today’s
market? Does it tick all of your customer's boxes, or can
you improve? Do you focus on being the best in a narrow
market say as a single OEM specialist, or do you support
multiple brands? New car sales tend to offer separate
brands or where you see multiple brands they are usually
a connected family like Jaguar / Land Rover, Renault and
Citroen etc. The used car market typically supports
numerous brands, and you expect the dealer or garage to
have the knowledge and expertise to assist you.
Be open – Today’s customers want to trust you, and you
gain that trust by being transparent, accountable and
honest with the information you provide, the
recommendations you make and the level of service you
deliver.
Be flexible – Not every person going into a restaurant
wants the menu of the day. Your customers may well want
something a little more a la carte. Your business needs to
be flexible enough to deliver what your customer wants.
Even if that means collaborating at some level with another
provider.
Capacity – Getting your capacity right is critical for your
business. If you can make ten thousand cartridges a day
or week or month, but only sell five thousand you have too
much capacity and that costs you dearly in increased
overheads. There are plenty of examples of companies
that had grown fast when the market was expanding, but
now have too much capacity in an ongoing contracting
market and the overhead burden impacts on the
profitability.
Staffing – Do your staff have the skills to deliver the
business you want or do you take the business they can
deliver? It’s a subtle question, but an important one
because in whatever way you want to innovate your
business, your staff have to be able, capable and willing
to do it. Training, recruitment and being willing to let
people go have to be high on your business innovation
agenda.
Marketing - A sensitive topic for everyone, because the
hard copy sector typically follows the IKE (I know
everyone) marketing strategy and significantly
underinvests. A valid marketing budget will be somewhere
between four and ten percent of your turnover and will,
over time, increase your sales by considerably more.
Marketing is not a cost, but an investment in the future of
your business and should be at the heart of what you do
and be the only budget not to be squeezed.
Success is measured in your bottom line and as the
saying goes “turnover is vanity and profit is sanity.” It is
possible to grow your business, even in a contracting
market, but the growth comes from winning business from
your OEM competitors by delivering what your customers
want and need.
EUROPE Canon, KMP, wta, IP
wta and KMP defeat Canon in dongle gear case
The two remanufacturers’ appeal against the Japanese OEM has resulted in a landmark victory.
In May of 2014, the OEM filed two suits for
patent infringement in the German District
Court of Dusseldorf, against wta Carsten
Weser GmbH and KMP PrintTechnik AG; the
lawsuits alleged “infringement of the German
portion” of a European patent covering drum
units in toner cartridges. This related to the
so-called ‘dongle gear’ user in the OEM’s
toner cartridges, which also included Canon’s
case and eventual GEO from the United States
International Trade Commission (USITC).
The relevant European patent, EP 2 087
407, refers to a “drum unit and a process
cartridge”, with the infringement suit
covering, amongst other things, the manufacturing,
offer and sale of certain toner
cartridges for use in various models of Canon
and Hewlett-Packard German laser beam
printers.
The patent has been frequently used by
Canon in a wide range of other European
cases, including those against Armor, Pelikan,
and Artech; it was additionally used against
Aster in the Netherlands, tintenalarm.de in
Germany, Zephyr SAS in France, and X-Com
Shop Ltd. and OOO Softrade in Russia. In
2014, as a result of action brought by Canon
against them, UK businesses European
Cartridge Warehouse Ltd. and Printer Supplies
Technology Ltd. both went out of business.
The Düsseldorf court hearing the suit
initially found in favour of Canon. However,
wta and KMP subsequently appealed this
judgement in the German Supreme Court,
where there is no further possibility of an
appeal. Both remanufacturers cited patent law
exhaustion, with a replacement of the OPC
argued to be a repair. Lawyers for KMP argued,
on the grounds of permissible repair, that the
company had simply used an “acceptable
repair measure”, rather than a “patentinfringing
new production.” and conjecturing
that the outcome of the case could affect the
entire spare parts industry.
On the 25 October 2017, wta and KMP
spokespersons announced that in a landmark
victory, the court in Karlsruhe had overturned
the decision made in Düsselfdorf;
furthermore, that the costs of the two
remanufacturers were awarded against
Canon also.
“The significance of this victory only
becomes truly clear when we could consider
what could have happened if the supreme
court had ruled in favour of Canon”, stated
reseller Superpatronen. Were that the
outcome, it says, “Canon could have used
such a ruling in the future to prohibit the
recycling of the original cartridges for which
they hold the equivalent patents.”
EUROPE Canon, IP, Legal
Canon obtain preliminary injunction
for patent infringement
The move comes following another alleged infringement of the company’s European patents.
Canon Inc. have been granted a
preliminary injunction against JT
Company UG (haftungsbeschränkt)
and its managing director, Jurij
Tkaciov.
The injunction, containing inter
alia injunctive relief, granted by the
District Court, Düsseldorf, is based
on the alleged infringement of the
German portion of Canon’s
European patent EP 2 087 407, which
relates to a drum unit and a process
cartridge. The act in question that
has led Canon to seek this measure
was the offer and distribution of
laser toner cartridges, comprising a drum
unit, through Amazon.de, using the ASINs
(Amazon Standard Identification Numbers)
B071RGYGCV and B072B5KTZ7. Those
cartridges replace the cartridge models HP
CE505X and HP CF226A, which are
compatible with HP laser beam printers.
The preliminary injunction is not yet final,
and the defendants have the option
to file an objection against it. Canon
will be able to enforce the decision
after the injunction has been served
on the vendors.
The granting of the preliminary
injunction is the latest in a string of
similar victories for Canon this year.
In June, it was granted another PI
against M&S Vertrieb Service OHG,
again by the District Court,
Düsseldorf, for alleged infringement
of another of their European patents.
Moreover, in August, Canon obtained
three preliminary injunctions in a
single week, against Printperfect Ltd,
Moreinks Limited, and Coemedia GmbH, all
for infringements of German portions of
Canon’s European patents.
EUROPE HP Inc, ETIRA, Lobbying
HP Inc’s misleading leaflet – ETIRA responds
HP eventually agreed to change its wording, after its criticism of remanufactured cartridges prompted complaint.
A new leaflet released by HP Inc. in September
provoked a strong backlash from both
the European Toner and Inkjet Remanufacturers
Association (ETIRA), and the
United Kingdom Cartridge Remanu-facturers
Association (UKCRA).
The pamphlet, entitled ‘The truth about
clone cartridges’, warned its readers about the
dangers of clones, describing them as “the
newest dubious alternatives” that “present an
even greater threat to your business.” Later in
the pamphlet, it compared HP’s own OEM
toner cartridges with clones, counterfeits, and
remanufactured/refilled cartridges. The leaflet
went on to specifically state that “used HP
toner cartridges that are emptied, refilled and
resold by other manufacturers” fail to “adhere
to quality, safety, or environmental standards.”
Such claims predictably drew a rapid
backlash from ETIRA, which disputed not
only the inaccuracies regarding remanufactured
cartridges, but also HP’s decision
to categorise remanufactured cartridges
alongside clones and counterfeits, calling it a
“baseless generalisation.”
“General marketing speak is OK, but you
cannot say things that are not true,” ETIRA
stated. “ETIRA regrets that HP’s new product
marketing material is again lowering the bar.
[The pamphlet] may be generally correct on
clones and counterfeits, but speaks nonsense
on remanufactured cartridges.”
ETIRA particularly focussed on HP’s claims
that remanufactured cartridges fail to follow
quality, safety and environmental standards,
declaring that HP “gets it wrong on all
three counts.”
“On quality, because since the 1990’s, 3rd
party cartridge remanufacturers have held a
20-30 percent market share in toners and 15-20
percent in inkjets and is now a 2bn euro
industry in Europe. So remanufacturers must
be doing something right in terms of quality.
And like the OEM’s, remanufacturers comply
with the ISO cartridge yield standards.
On safety and quality, because most
remanufacturers produce according to DIN,
27.–30.1.2018, Frankfurt am Main
paperworld.messefrankfurt.com
Nordic Ecolabel, STMC, ISO 9003, and other
international safety and quality standards.
On environment, because we adhere to ISO
14001, and it is only thanks to 3rd party
remanufacturers that 20-30% of used
cartridges are not being landfilled after 1st use,
but get a 2nd and subsequent life, reducing
their environmental footprint while offering
customer choice. No printer manufacturer
matches that environmental performance.”
ETIRA wasn’t the only group to offer a
damning dismantling of HP’s pamphlet, with
its British counterpart, UKCRA, also releasing
an unimpressed response. UKCRA’s Laura
Heywood pointed out to HP that
remanufacturing “isn’t a new concept. From
auto parts and car engines to disposable
cameras, cellphones, printers and even
supermarket shelves; it has been lucrative for
those with the diligence and determination to
produce a quality product.”
Heywood continued: “In any Industry there
are those that compromise or take shortcuts.
It isn’t long before they disappear - but
for manufacturers to encompass all remanufacturers
as producing a below quality
product is disingenuous and misleading and
compromises not only their integrity but also
their trust with the consumer.
“Take a supermarket shelf- by adding extra
bars to used shelving making it stronger, it will
last 20 years rather than the five year average
when they are usually replaced due to sagging.
“In the case of a toner cartridge it’s
simply the toner that is depleted. By
replacing this and one or more worn
components, it is given a ‘new’ life and
can, and has performed the same as an
original new cartridge.”
Heywood also pointed out an
independent comparison study, testing
several remanufactured cartridges against an
OEM toner cartridge; she noted that it was
documented in this study “that one
remanufactured cartridge came out the “best
of these tests” [...] with a yield higher than the
OEM standard. It was so perfect that the OEM
visited the lab to view the remanufactured
cartridge to ensure it contained aftermarket
toner, drum and other parts.
Doesn’t this demonstrate that re-using the
original core (used cartridge) and replacing
any worn components, it will perform to a
high standard? The engineering has already
been carried out – it’s included in the cartridge
design. Quoting from the WEEE Directive- “a
product must be designed to be reused”.
Being so well made it is important that it does
not enter the recycling or waste stream but is
remanufactured. Besides all the environmental
advantages of a lower carbon footprint, it’s the
more sustainable option by far.”
UKCRA also declared its support for ETIRA’s
earlier response, after ETIRA announced it
would appeal to HP to change the leaflet’s
wording, on the ground of false advertising, an
appeal that was ultimately successful: In
October, the OEM reissued the pamphlet with
a very slight change in the wording, now
claiming that remanufactured cartridges
“don’t always adhere to quality, safety or
environmental standards” (our italics).
In response to the update, ETIRA said that
they welcomed the change, but called on HP
“to in future, refrain from making statements
that are not supported by the facts. Since many
years, the benefits of buying remanufactured
OEM cartridges are clear: a top-quality,
environmental-friendly, and less expensive
alternative product.”
Remanexpo: Product Group
Epson fighting reselling on eBay
The Japanese giant is reportedly removing third-party products from the online auction site.
Epson has convinced eBay to remove many
third-party ink sellers’ products, claiming
that the compatible cartridges represent
a violation of its patents, reports Cory
Doctorow for the Electronic Frontier
Foundation.
As a part of eBay’s Verified Rights Owner
(VeRO) programme, Epson can – as a “trusted
vendor” – request that listings be removed, on
the grounds of infringement of its intellectual
property rights. As a trusted vendor, eBay
seemingly does not request actual proof of
infringement before adhering to the request.
This goes against the standard eBay
procedure for dealing with allegations of
copyright infringement and violation.
Epson only applies VeRO to EU-based
patent claims, meaning that Americans are
not affected by this latest move.
Slavka Bielikova, of the Open Rights Group,
a British organisation campaigning for digital
rights, has called Epson’s actions “unusual
and unfair.”
It is suggested by both Bielikova and
Doctorow that the move is an attempt by
WORLD FOCUS
Epson to hurt the resale market, as opposed
to a simple assertion of patents, with
Doctorow arguing that “if that was their goal,
they’d target manufacturers, and shut down
sales at the source.”
So far, Epson has issued requests to remove
compatible cartridges including the T16 XL,
the T24 XL, and the T0797 XL.
In a statement to The Inquirer, Epson
described its approach as “even-handed”,
saying the company takes action “where
Epson considers necessary, to protect its
commercial and intellectual property
interests, online and offline. Our activities are
based on extensive purchasing and study of
the products to confirm that they infringe.”
The Open Rights Group have asked the UK
Intellectual Property Office to investigate.
NORTH AMERICA Patent Troll, Legal, IP
‘Patent troll’ rears its head?
A Texas company is suing four OEMs for multiple alleged patent infringements.
Diversified Observation LLC, a Texas-based
company, has filed lawsuits against a range
of OEMs in a display of so-called ‘patent
trolling’.
Diversified Observation is suing HP Inc.,
Panasonic Corporation, and OKI Data
Americas Inc., all of Delaware, and New
York’s Konica Minolta; all the lawsuits have
been filed in the United States District Court
of Delaware, with the exception of the suit
against Konica Minolta, which has been filed
in the District Court for the Eastern District
of Texas.
The lawsuits are in relation to various
patents which Diversified Observation alleges
are being infringed by the four defendants.
It is suing Panasonic, OKI and Konica
Minolta over US Patent No. 5,857,133
(“the ‘133 patent”) – “Information Reading
Apparatus Having a Contact Image Sensor”;
No. 6,414,461 (“the ‘461 Patent”) – “Scanner
that Controls Stepping Motor Torque”;
and No. 6,522,432 (“the ‘432 Patent”) –
“Image Scanner with Automatic Signal
Compensation.”
It is also suing both Panasonic and HP Inc.
for infringement of US Patent No. 6,449,397
(“the ‘397 Patent”), “Image Processing
System for Scanning a Rectangular
Document”; furthermore, it is suing HP and
Konica Minolta over US Patent No. 5,997,199
(“the ‘199 Patent”), entitled “Paper Feeding
Module of a Color Picture Printer.”
As well as the above, Diversified
Observation are simultaneously suing
Panasonic for infringement of US Patent No.
6,008,485 (“the ‘485 Patent”), “Image
Capturing Device Having De-Friction
Function”, and HP for infringement of Patent
No. 5,913,072 (“the ‘072 Patent”), entitled
“Image Processing System in which Image
Processing Programs Stored in a Personal
Computer Are Selectively Executed through
User Interface of a Scanner.”
That three of the four lawsuits were all
filed on the same day suggests this is another
example of ‘patent trolling’, whereby a
company will hold patents whilst not
producing services, and will make repeated
attempts to sue OEMs for infringement,
largely for financial reasons.
In all four cases concerning the seven
patents named above, Diversified
Observation is seeking a trial by jury, in order
to adjudicate that the defendants have
infringed its patents. It is also seeking the
award of damages and the payment by the
defendants of its legal fees.
The lawsuits have echoes of similar action
undertaken by OpenPrint LLC in August of
this year, when it sued HP Inc., OKI and
Panasonic for the infringement of eight
different patents.
NORTH AMERICA Static Control, Aster, Lawsuit
Static Control v. Aster rumbles on
SCC has moved to dismiss counterclaims in the latest developments of the legal battle.
The latest development of the court case
between Static Control Components, Inc. and
Aster Graphics, Inc. has seen Static Control
file for the dismissal of Aster’s counterclaims.
Attorneys for SCC have filed a suit to the
United States District Court in California
(Southern Division) asking for Judge David
Carter to dismiss Aster’s counterclaims of
non-infringement and invalidity.
These counterclaims were made by Aster
at the beginning of September, following a
July lawsuit against it for patent infringement.
The patents in question were US Patent
Nos. 9,599,949 (“the ‘949 patent”) and
9,671,742 (“the ‘742 patent.”) Aster initially
counterclaimed for a declaratory judgement
of non-infringement and invalidity – although
not that the patents were unenforceable.
SCC’s response to these counterclaims was
to file an amended complaint at the end of
September, alleging further infringements
against several additional products. As a
result, Aster amended its counterclaims,
crucially including a claim of unenforceability
of the ‘949 and ‘742 patents.
SCC asserts that Aster’s counterclaims
are “pure legal conclusions” and states
that they are unsupported by any sort of
factual allegations that would make the
counterclaims plausible. The motion of
dismissal also cites that Aster’s declaratory
judgement fails to identify any claims that are
not infringed, or any non-infringing Aster
products, calling it a “total void of factual
support and detail.” It points out this is in
stark comparison to the detailed charts SCC
attached to its original complaint.
Aster’s counterclaim of unenforceability is
also disputed by SCC, with SCC again citing a
lack of factual support. Aster alleged
inequitable conduct as grounds for the
counterclaim; however, SCC’s motion states
that “Aster has not specifically pleaded who
engaged in the misconduct, or how any
purported misconduct was material to
patentability.”
As a result, SCC has moved for the
counterclaim of inequitable conduct, and
unenforceability, to be stricken alongside the
counterclaims of non-infringement and
invalidity.
EMEA IDC, Market Data, Printer shipments
APeJ emerges as top inkjet printer shipment market
Latest data from IDC reveals that the Asia Pacific region has surpassed the USA as the top shipment market for inkjet printers in Q2 2017.
The latest IDC Asia Pacific Quarterly Hardcopy
Peripherals Tracker has revealed that “the
total hardcopy peripherals shipment
in2017Q2 for the Asia Pacific region excluding
Japan (APeJ) was 7.84 million units”, which
means that this market has for the first time
surpassed the USA “to become the number
one inkjet market in the world in terms of
shipment volume”. Both inkjet and laser unit
shipments expanded by 2.2 percent and 4.9
percent year-on-year respectively.
The IDC data revealed that “PRC was a
strong contributor to APeJ becoming the top
inkjet market” due to increased inkjet
shipments as a result of “the 6.18 online
shopping festival”. It also demonstrates that
laser printer shipment volume has remained
strong in the PRC market “due to the rapid
expansion of the small-medium business
(SMB) segment.”
In contrast, the South Asia sub-region
“continued to see a strong shift from ink
cartridge to ink tank”, a change which has been
brought about “by the low cost per page
benefit of ink tank and aggressive promotions
from vendors”. As the IDC report reveals, “in
2017Q2, the ink tank to ink cartridge ratio had
reached an all-time high and had finally crossed
the 50 percent mark to make Southeast Asia a
truly ink tank dominant market.”
“Taking over USA in terms of inkjet unit
shipment this quarter shows that the demand
for inkjet in the region is becoming stronger
than ever. Concurrently, we are also seeing an
increase in demand for ink tank printers as the
ratio for ink tank vs ink cartridge had reached
an all-time high of 38%. More businesses are
buying ink tank to take advantage of the low
printing cost,” explained Yexi Liao, a Market
Analyst in IDC Asia/Pacific’s Image Printing and
Document Solutions (IPDS) team.
“The laser market also see a stronger growth
within higher value speed segments of 30+
ppm (printer per minute), as some vendors are
struggling with profitability within the low-end
speed segments of 1-30 ppm and want to shift
up in order to help them protect their profit
margin,” continued Liao.
India experienced a decline in both inkjet
and laser markets in the second quarter of
2017, by -6.8 percent and -3.8 percent
respectively, which “was largely due to market’s
apprehension on the GST implementation”;
the IDC explains that “they refused to take
in any further shipment from vendors in
order to avoid a high level of leftover stock
when the GST gets implemented.”
The IDC data also revealed the following
highlights: “The top five hardcopy peripherals
companies account for 81 percent of the
market. The dominance of main players is
expected to continue. We also do not expect to
see any new hardcopy peripherals companies
entering the market that will be able to make a
significant difference to the market.
Inkjet market continues to shift more
towards ink tank printers. Ink tank printers
continues to grow at a rapid rate, recording a
17.2 percent year-on-year growth in 2017Q2.
The growth is largely due to the consumer and
SMB segments, where they are more cost
conscious and prefer the low cost per page
benefit that ink tank technology can provide.
ASEAN remains to be the top market for both
inkjet and ink tank printers.
Laser market in APeJ continues to
outperform the rest of the world. Propelled by
the growing demand for print devices in China,
APeJ had recorded the highest year-on-year
growth rate in the world for the fourth
consecutive quarter.
Mature markets continue to shift away from
print. Mature markets such as Singapore, Hong
Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and Korea had
all continued to decline in their overall
shipment in 2017Q2 as a result of digitization
and the high adoption rate of smart devices in
these markets.”
EUROPE ERP, WEEE, E-Waste
ERP looks back on decade of WEEE
The European Recycling Platform has published a new report, lokking back over the last ten years of its work on WEEE in the UK
Lets Recycle reported on the publishing of a
new report by ERP which examines its WEEE
efforts over the last decade, during which it
states that it has “changed the compliance
and recycling landscape dramatically.”
UK producer compliance scheme,
European Recycling Platform, has been
providing “solutions which cover WEEE,
batteries, and packaging recycling” for 10
years in the UK, and its report “examines
how ERP has been effective in introducing
competition to compliance markets to
improve quality and reduce costs”; in
addition, it “describes how ERP has worked
with stakeholders and legislators to improve
the WEEE system.”
It also explores the effects of the UK
WEEE Regulations, implemented this year
“with the central aim of reducing the amount
of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE)
ending up in landfill”, revealing the “impact
the Regulations have had on producers,
consumers, retailers, local authorities and
waste treatment operators; and assesses the
achievements to date and the key challenges
and developments ahead.”
The CEO of ERP, Umberto Raiteri, said,
“Through a positive collaborative approach,
we’ve been able to participate in discussions
based on experience and data, and we’ve
been effective at sharing the learning, which
is hugely appreciated by local and European
legislators. Through our data collection,
we’ve also been able to provide benchmarks
on collection and return rates, which again is
appreciated as it has helped to inform
targets.” In addition, Dona Caria, ERP’s
quality and audit manager stated, “WEEE
treatment processes have become
increasingly efficient in the last decade, with
improved removal of regulated substances.”
However, as well as the positive findings
the report also reveals challenges to the
future of effective WEEE, with homeowners
“accumulating more EEE”. Nevertheless
there is evidence that more businesses are
getting on board, with companies
“increasingly looking to producer
compliance schemes like ERP to help close
the loop with recycled materials and be their
circular economy partner”.
GLOBAL Market Data, Survey, Office Imaging
Survey reveals insights into office imaging
The Recycler commissioned a survey this summer focusing on five key areas of the office imaging sector. Here is what the respondents said.
Since 2000, the office imaging sector has
undergone continual development, including
the creation of new jobs, opportunities and
general aftermarket growth. This summer The
Recycler commissioned a survey of 100
industry members to discover their thoughts
on the office imaging market.
Market contraction
In the five years spanning 2011 to 2016, our
respondents felt that the overall market had
contracted by approximately 15 percent, and
though contraction has slowed over the
course of 2017, the trend looks set to
continue by about 1 to 2 percent due to
increased use of technology by an increasing
millennial audience.
However regional contraction may vary,
with market contraction in Europe and North
America expected to be around 3 percent. The
Chinese market is thought to experience a
year on year growth of roughly 2 percent,
while the Middle East and African markets are
expected to grow by 1 percent.
OEMs and contractual supplies
Survey respondents revealed they expect the
number of OEM brands to shrink down to just
10, due to mergers and acquisitions, as well as
diversification. These remaining brands will
drive A3 device sales through aggressive
contractual supply programmes (MPS) that
would account for around fifty percent of
consumable sales and increase OEM market
share towards eighty percent.
NORTH AMERICA Printing, Market Data, Research
The Canada-based print-management
company Print Audit have released the
industry printing statistics for 2015 and 2016.
The figures, gathered from rich user,
document and device-based data, give an
insight into how print behaviour is changing,
according to Print Audit’s Angela Onstine; this
will be crucial for dealers looking to grow
their business in 2017-18, she writes.
Trevor Hofer, Insight BI team lead at Print
Audit, said: “Running the numbers for how
people’s print patterns are changing brought
us some surprising insights.”
One of the biggest increases was in colour
printing from email and web, which increased
from 20.54 percent in 2015 to 27 percent in
2016 – a rise which Print Audit’s West
New build products
Respondents felt that the IP
status of newly built laser
products were unclear, but
that there are IP-safe ink
tank devices on the market.
They revealed that they
expected this segment to
grow over the next few years
and force IP infringing
products out of the market
as further consolidation
takes place.
Over the next five years the survey showed
they expect new build sales to decline.
Meanwhile in China, respondents expect to
see investment in Artificial Intelligence and
the automation of manufacturing to produce
bigger, more cost-effective cartridges,
challenging the dominance of OEMs in the A3
contractual sales market.
Aftermarket trends
Contractual sales - Respondents expect
non-OEM contractual sales to double to
around ten percent of the market share in the
next three years.
Online - Online sales are expected to grow
through channels like Amazon Business
but OEMs will demonstrate increased
vigilance on low-cost transactional sales on
Amazon and eBay.
Channel integration – Respondents expect
continuous aftermarket integration and a
McDonald allocate to the entry of more costeffective
colour printing devices to the
market. Overall colour spend saw a much
smaller rise, reaching 43.98 percent in 2016
from 42.18 percent the year before.
Page production is a slightly different story,
however: The Financial vertical had a
relatively strong 2016, at an average of 5,271
pages per company, but it was significantly
down from 2015’s 6,397.
Similarly, the Legal, Medical and
Accounting verticals had the highest pages
per user of all verticals, but are on the decline
– Legal dropping to 79 pages per day per user,
compared to 87 in 2015.
What is less surprising is that the average
volumes by user have dropped, as industry
more significant focus on brand
placement in important market
segments as manufacturers and
remanufacturers get closer to the
distribution channel.
Outlook for remanufacturing
Respondents said that the
volume of remanufactured
products was probably at its
lowest point in recent years,
but that the profile of
remanufactured products was
moving away from high volume, smalldiameter
cartridges to larger, more profitable
niche products that are also in high demand.
However recent announcements by the
Chinese government on further import
restrictions on e-waste means we are likely to
see an increase in the regional (EU, North
America etc.) remanufacturing of volume
products, especially in the remanufacturing of
IP-safe non-OEM cartridges where take-back
costs would need offsetting by further
remanufacturing.
Other opportunities – Respondents said
that business inkjet and wide-format were
areas of interest and were actively looking at
expanding in these sectors.
OEM Licensing – Licensing was seen as a
win-win for the OEM and aftermarket
community and could be a vehicle to reward
OEM R&D costs, earn ongoing revenue and
lockout infringing technology and products.
Comparative industry printing statistics released
Print Audit have published the comparative figures for 2015-16.
think tanks pointed to. In 2016, the average of
daily pages to user was 17.39, whereas in 2015
it was up at 20.54.
Meanwhile, duplex printing figures are
stable, showing as 20 percent of overall
printing for both 2015 and 2016.
Print Audit are offering access to the Insight
BI Dashboards showing these figures, as well
as many more, to business owners free of
charge.
“We’ve been collecting user-metrics and
industry-vertical level details for a long time,
and we’re excited to share some of this data
with the office equipment channel,” said
Hofer. “We’re excited to get this data into
dealers’ hands, so they can make moreinformed
decisions about how they grow.”
Turbon reports H1
€3.1million loss
Turbon reports increased sales in Europe and Asia, but down in US as the US market
continues to challenge.
Half year sales were €48.4 milion ($56.6
million), down €1.9 million ($2.2 million) on
the same period last year. Sales in Europe
were up €2.8 million ($3.3 million) at €35.8
million ($42.2 million) and sales in Asia were
€2 million ($2.3 million). Sales in North
America were down €5.2 million ($6.1
business sales of laser cartridges were €38.3
million ($45.2 million), down €5.9 million
($6.9 million). Other, non laser cartridge sales
were €9.7 million ($11.4 million), compared
to €5.7 million ($6.7 million) in the same
period last year.
Ongoing realignment in the US saw a €1.9
million ($2.2 million) downwards adjustment
of inventories as a result of acquiring
companies in the same trading area and the
need to realign the cost structure to the same
degree as the sales decline. A further €1
million ($1.18 million) impairment of the
goodwill at ILG and severance payments.
Going forward the company expects to
continue restructuring and the merging of
the Laser Cartridges division functions and
expects further non-recurring expenses, in
particular for severance pay and possible
further depreciation requirements in the area
ASIA Ninestar Corp, Financials, Business
Ninestar Corp posts half yearly results
Half year sales increase at Lexmark, and with printer consumables and the chip business. Acquisitions continue with three new companies
acquired in H1 of 2017. Losses reported from the merger of subsidiaries acquired in 2016.
Ninestar Corp, formerly known as Apex
Technology, released its results for first half
year 2017 posting an operating income of
RMB 1,112 billion ($167,820 million/
€141,891 million) for the reporting period.
The company said in its financial statement
that in the first half of 2017, the company
focused resources in the integrated circuit
(chip) and printer consumables business to
expand the market, research and
development, and use the brand and channel
advantages to further enhance the company’s
competitiveness and business growth.
The company continues with the Lexmark
ISS business integration and to realise the full
potential of synergies between the
companies. This included the selling of
Lexmark’s software business and the sale of
loss-making assets and the recovery of large
amounts of cash, reducing Ninestar
Corporation’s asset-liability ratio, and further
optimize the company’s capital structure.
Ninestar Corp posted a total operating
income of RMB 1,112 billion ($167,820
million/ €141,891 million), an increase of
678.14 percent over the same period of last
year. The statement says that increase in
income was due to the increase in sales
income of its overseas subsidiaries and the
business acquired in 2016.
The net profit for the first half year was
RMB -1,015 billion (-$153,143 million/ -
€129,523 million), a decrease of 536.57
percent over the same period of last year. The
company says the main reason for the
decrease was due to the merger of the
overseas subsidiaries acquired in 2016.
The integrated circuit chip business
managed to achieve substantial growth
over the same period last year and showed
an increase of operating income of about
30 percent and net profit increase of about
40 percent.
The printing supplies business showed
an operating income increase of about
15 percent and net profit increase of about
14 percent over the same period of last year.
Ninestar Corp says in its statement that
through the implementation of VIP customer
management and improved service quality,
new customers have significantly increased
on the toner cartridge sales side and
accounted for 7.7 percent of the amount of
sales in the first half of 2017. The domestic
market grew 37 percent on the drum side.
Opening up high-end store channels, the US
network marketing has also made significant
progress.
After the completion of Lexmark’s
acquisition, the company began a global
strategic integration. In the first half of 2017
Lexmark unit sales increased by 19.7 percent
(same period last year was 7.7 million
units) however the consumables sales
decreased slightly.
Looking forward, the statement said that at
the end of 2017 Lexmark will be introducing
new products that will enrich the product
line. Also the company will be looking to use
the Lexmark expertise of print management
services, industry solutions for the medical,
financial, insurance, manufacturing and other
industries to introduce customised solutions
and is looking to introduce these in the
Chinese market. Ninestar Corp is looking
to grow the printer business management
and specifically increase the Chinese
market share.
Ninestar Corp will gradually move the
manufacturing of Lexmark products to
Zhuhai. The first of Lexmark supplies have
been produced in Zhuhai which was the first
phase of the migration and has been
successfully completed. On the basis of a
stable production, the company will gradually
increase production capacity, expand
production, looking to reach 8 million to 10
million units within the next two years.
During the reporting period, the company
made breakthroughs in the industrialization
of phase change storage (PCRAM) with the
Shanghai Microsystems, SMIC and SMIC
Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and
developed the printer based on PCRAM
chips, which was obtained at 130 nm
technology node.
According to the notes in the statement,
Ninestar Corp acquired in cash three
companies. In total 51 percent stake in
each with the transaction amounting to
RMB 55,641 million ($8,393 million /
€7,104 million).
In May 2017 the company finalised an
acquisition plan and three companies were
acquired and the transaction was completed
on 14 June 2017. Local research indicates that
the acquired companies in question are
Zhuhai Xinwei Technology Co., Ltd, Zhuhai
Zhongrun Jingjie Printing Technology Co., Ltd
and Zhuhai City Extension Good Technology
Co., Ltd.
During the reported period, the company
actively promoted the sale of Lexmark ES
projects. On 2 May 2017 (New York time),
Lexmark International, Inc., a subsidiary of
the company, signed a “purchase agreement”
with the buyer to sell Lexmark’s ES business
with approximately $1.35 billion (€1.14
billion) in cash. The sale completed in July
this year.
Since it was founded back in 2012 by
Managing Director Bernd Ruse, Andrea Land,
Silke Püschel, and Head of Sales Frank Tilli,
KRR has achieved rapid growth and will garner
sales revenue in excess of €4 million in 2017.
From their Oberhausen offices, the company
has secured a number of nationwide clients,
both commercial and public sector, based in
Western Germany, and was recently awarded
accelerate KRR’s development.
Jason Collins, Apogee Joint CEO said “The
acquisition of KRR is a key part of the group’s
experience to our clients and continue to grow
the business across Germany. I’m looking
forward to winning new business as part of the
Apogee Group.”
Apogee’s organic plus M&A growth strategy,
acquisitions will follow, to enable Apogee to
drive its growth in both the UK and Europe.
EUROPE RIS, Intermarché, Refill Equipment
Intermarché place RIS refill equipment
Retail Inkjet Solutions (RIS) has announced that the French-based supermarket chain, Intermarché, has agreed to place its InkCentre
inkjet cartridge refill equipment.
Early this year, The Recycler
reported that RIS had signed an
agreement with the French
hypermarket to trial its Ink Refill
Service. Now, in a new press
release from RIS, they have
revealed that Intermarché has
opted to deploy RIS’s inkjet
cartridge refill equipment in
select locations scattered
across France.
This decision on the part of
Intermarché comes after the
successful trial installations of
RIS’s on-site Refill Service for inkjet
cartridges, which led to strong sales growth
for the hypermarket.
Consumers can simply drop off their
empty cartridges at the service counter, and
while they are shopping the cartridge will be
refilled using the InkCentre machine. This
service offers customers a saving of up to 70
per cent, compared to the cost of purchasing
a new cartridge.
“We’re thrilled to announce our Refill
Service expansion with Mr. Jean-François
Vergez of Intermarché. Together, over the
past year we have shown his customers the
significant savings that come from refilling
their branded ink cartridges while helping to
protect the environment. Refilling empty ink
cartridges instead of discarding them
contributes to a cleaner planet, a tenet that is
very important to the French culture.
Intermarché is becoming known as an ink
destination. With Mr. Vergez’s help, we
look forward to expanding the ink cartridge
Refill Service to more Intermarché locations
in the near future” said Vince Hormovitis,
Vice President Sales & Business
Development at RIS.
“In today’s market, ink cartridges are
consumables. I know my customers very well.
Refilling their cartridges instead of purchasing
new ones matches their expectations as well
as the trend of the French market. It is
important to me to bring new,
exciting concepts and value
to my customers like the
Refilling Service, while doing
my part to make the planet
cleaner. The InkCenter is
profitable for my customers
but also for my business,”
declared Jean-François
Vergez, Owner, Intermarché
Muret and Fonsorbes.
RIS Chief Executive Officer,
David Lenny added, “Since
starting the RIS InkCenter
refill trial program at select Intermarché
supermarkets in southwest France, it has been
exciting to see the initiative grow from startup
to a very successful inkjet cartridge refill
business in such a short amount of time. At
RIS, we are very pleased to now make this
announcement that solidifies our partnership
into a new long-term agreement with such a
reputable retailer in France. This will ensure
we continue to deliver our high quality ink
refill experience to Intermarché customers at
a fraction of the price of purchasing new
inkjet cartridges. Aside from the savings,
customers can drop their cartridges off and do
their shopping while the cartridges are being
refilled – which is very convenient.”
EUROPE LVL, Cartridges, Remanufacturing
LVL seeks to maximise cartridge collection
The company’s new web and mobile solution allows LVL to buy back usable empty ink cartridges, giving them a “second life.”
Last month Actu released a video
interview with the CEO of La
Chevroliére-based company, LVL,
Philippe Guénin, regarding the company’s
new website, www.selecteo.fr. This web and
mobile solution allows the public to return
their empty ink cartridges in return for a
small fee, with a few simple clicks of a
button, and also gives you the option of
ordering both new and remanufactured
cartridges.
This internet platform has been up and
running for several months now, and it is
hoped the site will serve as an inspiration to
individuals and businesses to reuse empty
ink cartridges.
“Just 17.5 percent of the inkjet cartridges
put on the market today are collected after
use. They are mostly used by individuals and
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Conversely, laser cartridges, used by
companies, are collected at close to 85
percent. Today we need to educate
consumers about inkjet cartridges to
encourage collection. “
Selecteo only purchases empty ink
cartridges that can be reused; people can use
a chronopost prepaid label for shipments of
a value above €20 ($23). Cartridges that are
too damaged to be reused are “directed
to appropriate recycling solutions as part
of the environmental code solutions.”
Guénin explained, “The site refuses to
offer new” compatible “or” generic
“cartridges for sale. These have a high
environmental impact. They do not usually
have re-employment or end-of-life solutions
that are really satisfactory.”
LVL, described by Actu as “a major player
in the sector”, sorted a gargantuan 4,700, 000
in 2016, restoring the cartridges to working
order and refilling them with ink. The
benefits of such restoration include a
cheaper price for consumers, as well as a
lower impact on the environment.
ACCC welcomes competition
law amendments
The Australian Parliament’s latest legislation has won the Commission’s seal of approval.
The Australian Competition & Consumer
Commission has welcomed two recent
legislative amendments to Australian
competition law passed through Parliament,
on the recommendation from the 2015
Harper Competition Policy Review.
The Competition and Consumer
Amendment (Competition Policy Review) Bill,
which passed this week, follows August’s
Competition and Consumer Amendment
(Misuse of Market Power) Bill.
The Competition Policy Review legislation
contains a wide variety of amendments to the
Competition and Consumer Act 2010,
applying to areas including cartels, price
signalling, exclusionary provisions, and
merger authorisations.
The intention of the Misuse of Market
Power legislation, meanwhile, is to strengthen
the prohibition on corporations’ misuse of
market power. The existing ‘purpose’ test will
be replaced by a ‘purpose or effects test’; this
will prevent any corporation with substantial
market power from engaging in conduct that
has the ‘purpose, effect or likely effect’ of
lessening competition.
“I am pleased to see these important
reforms pass through the Parliament,” ACCC
Chairman Rod Sims said. “The reforms to the
misuse of market power prohibition and
the new prohibition of anti-competitive
concerted practices will improve our ability to
target conduct harming the Australian
economy.”
“These new laws have far reaching
implications for the Australian economy, and
should significantly boost growth,” Mr.
Sims continued. “The Harper Review
recommended these changes to enhance the
benefits that should flow to consumers and
businesses when markets operate efficiently.”
The ACCC has also established a Substantial
Lessening of Competition Unit (SLC Unit) to
help facilitate enforcement of, and
compliance with, the legislation. The Unit will
be responsible for investigations and litigation
within the Commission, concerning misuse of
market power and concerted practices; it is
due to release new guidance to help
businesses understand and comply with the
new law.
“The ACCC looks forward to the challenges
and opportunities that will come with
enforcing this legislation, for the benefit of
Australia’s economy and consumers,” Mr
Sims said.
The two amendments are scheduled to
come into effect in the coming weeks.
economy and waste recycling.” The OWA
cartridge line was made out of collected used
cartridges. Any collected cartridges that were
still usable were reintroduced onto the
market while those that could not be re-used
were “recycled into secondary raw
materials.”
The OWA laser cartridge range has been
awarded a QUALICERT certification,
guaranteeing that ARMOR fully complies with
its quality and recycling commitments.
EUROPE WeeeLogic, WEEE Compliance, Refilling
Refilled cartridges must be
WEEE compliant
With the implementation of the new WEEE directive, open scope will take effect from
next August and will have an impact on refillers and remanufacturers.
Earlier this year The Recycler reported on
changes to the WEEE directive, reducing the
number of categories from 10 to 6, as well as
covering the news that, under the new
legislation, remanufactured cartridges can be
considered as new products, with all the
attendant obligations this designation has
upon their producers.
Now it has been revealed that, according to
the new WEEE directive, which will see open
scope making an impact from 15 August 2018,
refilled printer cartridges must also be WEEE
compliant, though “refilled printer cartridges
enter the market as a quasi-new product”.
They are viewed as remarketing an existing
product, rather than creating a new one.
Open scope is expected to have “strong
consequences” on some OEMs as well as on
refillers, remanufacturers and “any other third
party cartridge producer”.
EMEA GIT, Business, ISO
Success and sustainability at GIT
October brought a hattrick of achievements for the Dubai-based company, with
revenues up and a milestone in Kenya.
The CEO of German Imaging Technologies
(GIT) Dubai has published the company’s
financial results for the first nine months of
2017. Dr. Sassan Dieter Khatib-Shahidi
revealed the results via LinkedIn, and it was
all good news for the UAE-based printing
document solutions provider: Compared
with the same period the year before,
revenue was up by 22.54 percent.
Q3 was slower than Q2 for revenue, with a
drop of 14.5 percent, but Dr. Khatib-Shahidi
puts this down to “the summer season
following the month of Ramadan.”
Encouragingly, even with that decrease, it
was still higher than the same quarter in
2016, rising by 13.12 percent.
“The management team has proven it
can move up and execute on strategy
irrespective of economic conditions,” Dr.
Khatib-Shahidi said. Also this month, GIT
has revealed its ongoing progress towards
achieving the UN Global Compact
Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on
gender equality (SDG5), promoting
sustained economic growth (SDG8) and
ensuring sustainable consumption and
production patterns (SDG12).
Over the course of the last 12 months
EUROPE Cartridge Depot, Awards, Business
As winners at their local Bedfordshire SME
Business Awards 2017 in the Green Award
category, Cartridge Depot have now made it
through to the SME National Business Awards
2017 in the Green Award category, alongside
other national businesses which have also
successfully reached the finals.
Cartridge Depot has worked hard in trying
to prevent as many cartridges as possible from
going into landfill. To date, the company has
stopped over 22,400 cartridges going into
landfill, with the cartridges being effectively
recycled instead.
Cartridge Depot are already a multi-award
winning company, which began trading in 2012
and have gone from strength to strength,
trading from their store in Bedford Town
management team being female.
Meanwhile, in terms of its environmental
commitments, in September this year the
company revealed that it had been awarded
its ISO140001 certification; the company had
recycled 8,160 kg of waste, and had also
contributed toward the saving of 122,000 kg
of solid waste and 500,000 kg of CO 2 .
It was a triple celebration for GIT, as it also
marked 18 successful months of its Kenyan
operations with a special customer event in
Nairobi, attended by representatives from 50
different companies. Since first moving into
the Kenyan market in 2016, the company has
gained 200 customers, which it describes as
being “beyond expectations”, and which it
attributes to the commitment of its local
service and sales teams.
Looking to the future, GIT is now doubling
its Kenyan staff and its office to accommodate
the company’s expansion strategy and says it
“looks forward to ramp up hiring, while
expanding its portfolio of services.”
The cartridge distributor has been named as a finalist in the SME National Business Awards 2017.
a national final is beyond belief, we would have
never thought that we would be able to
compete against the big companies out there.
Fingers crossed we may be able to get another
At the beginning of October Mumbai-based
Insta Impex Private Limited was struck off
the Register of Companies. The company,
founded in 1989, was a pioneer of the ink
India, and were known for manufacturing
and exporting inkjet refilling equipment
and printing inks, as well as providing IT
services. We caught up with Harish Lalwani,
one of the Insta Impex owners and directors
who told The Recycler “I am [still] doing
NORTH AMERICA Cartridge World, Printers, Exchange
Cartridge World offers solution for printer disposal
The company launched a ‘Printer Exchange Program’ to provide alternatives for small businesses.
With forty percent of printer sales occurring
in the year’s fourth quarter, Cartridge World,
a global franchise network, is providing
business owners with a solution for their old,
unwanted printers that are in need of an
upgrade with its new ‘Printer Exchange
Program’. The program allows business
owners to obtain a new printer without
worrying about the tech waste of their
current device.
According to a national survey conducted
by Cartridge World, a majority of businesses
only ranked their printers as “satisfactory”
and most plan to buy a new printer within
the next three months. In Cartridge World’s
‘Printer Exchange Program’, business owners
can obtain new printers at no cost in
exchange for their outdated, unwanted
printers. Participants in the program must
then buy their toner from Cartridge World,
and will also receive complimentary printer
maintenance for their leased printers. The
program, available through 31 December
2017, offers options to participants to
recycle, move to another location in the
business or donate their old printers to a
charity.
Cartridge World will provide a new printer
for those participating in the program that
meets the needs of the business customer.
Cartridge World will review each business
and its printing needs individually to ensure
they are receiving the right printer when
looking to buy now or upgrade. The ‘Printer
Exchange Program’ is a part of the
company’s ‘Why Buy a Printer Program’ that
was launched earlier this year to give
businesses the benefit of worry-free printing
with the printer(s) and all the printer
maintenance and service included at no
additional cost.
“As a global brand, we’re aware of the
impact that tech waste is having on the
environment, and want to offer a solution
that not only benefits our Earth, but also the
business owners who participate and the
surrounding communities,” said Mark
Pinner, CEO of Cartridge World North
America. “With the holiday giving season
quickly approaching, this is the perfect time
to launch our Printer Exchange Program. The
program allows for businesses to obtain new
state-of-the-art printers while allowing the
old printers to be donated or recycled to
those in need.”
In 2003, Cartridge World opened its first
store in the United States and now has over
350 stores in North America and over 1,000
worldwide in 55 countries. With its sights set
on adding nearly 3,000 stores to its system by
2019, Cartridge World is looking to expand
its presence and “clearly define itself as the
global leader in ink and toner cartridge sales,
printers, printing supplies, and printer
maintenance for home and office
customers.”
“APS Photoconductor (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.
that AEG (Now APS) being the patent holder
Shanghai-based APS Photoconductor Co., Ltd has issued a response to an erroneous
patent allegation about the company, recently published online.
of Canon’s Toner “Dongle Gear” in China and
New faces at award-winning
Flexprint
It’s been a busy month for Flexprint, with a raft of new appointments at the top and
Ricoh recognition.
Office technology and managed print provider
Flexprint LLC has made a selection of new
executive appointments to its Arizona-based
leadership team. Mike Weetman has become
Chief Financial Officer, Randee Manley has
been appointed as Vice President of Human
Resources, and Chase Cabanillas has become
Chief Information Officer.
New CFO Weetman joins Flexprint from
Whalerock Digital, in West Hollywood,
California. Weetman, who boasts over thirty
years of experience with companies including
Yahoo, DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox, will
oversee all aspects of finance, acquisitions,
integration, corporate financing, planning and
IT, whilst also providing business insights for
Flexprint’s strategic growth strategy.
Simultaneously, Randee Manley – formerly
of Lincoln, Nebraska-based Ameritas – has
become Vice President of Human Resources.
Manley, who fulfilled the same role at Fender
Musical Instruments prior to joining Ameritas,
will apply her twenty-five years of HR
experience to a varied remit for Flexprint.
This will include organisational development,
workforce planning, and employee
relationship.
Chase Cabanillas, the new CIO, is appointed
to oversee corporate technology strategy, as
well as Flexprint’s portfolio of products and
services. A graduate of the W.P. Carey School of
Business, Cabanillas was previously head of the
Digital Innovations team at Kroger, and has
formerly held leadership roles at Harris Teeter
and Bashas’ Supermarkets.
Speaking about the appointment of
Weetman and Manley, Tom Callinan, President
of Flexprint LLC, said: “As we exponentially
grow the company through acquisitions and
organic growth, Mike and Randee each bring a
tremendous depth of knowledge and business
acumen that will benefit the entire Flexprint
Chase Cabanillas Chief Information Officer
at Flexprint
family. We are fortunate to have them on our
executive team.”
Meanwhile, Weetman himself welcomed
Cabanillas on board, hailing his “unique
combination of technical knowledge and
business acumen that will ensure we are
using data and technology to enhance our
performance, while making sure our offerings
are optimally matched to market demands.”
It has been an exciting month for Flexprint,
as it has also received Ricoh’s RFG Circle of
Excellence 2018 Certified Dealership award,
recognising it as being the “best of the best.”
The award recognises those within Ricoh’s
national dealer network that “provide
outstanding service and support in accordance
with Ricoh’s strict guidelines.”
Mike Martos, Flexprint’s Vice President of
Technical Services, said: “It is an honour to
receive this award for another year. We are
proud of all the technicians who keep the bar
high at FlexPrint. The Ricoh Service Excellence
Award reflects the dedication of our team to
ensuring customers are satisfied with our
service and performance.”
AROUND THE INDUSTRY
EUROPE Pelikan, Nordic Ecolabel
Pelikan awarded
Ecolabel extension
In the wake of the company’s shift to
manufacturing facilities in China, Pelikan
has had its Ecolabel for its
remanufactured toner cartridges renewed.
Earlier this year The Recycler reported that
remanufacturer Pelikan had received a Nordic
Swan Ecolabel 5.4 certificate for almost 250 of
its toner cartridges, awarded because
Pelikan’s cartridges “fulfil the predefined
criteria in terms of product quality, recycling
process and system, the material used,
packaging and product labelling as well as
complying with health requirements”. In
addition, the cartridges “generate minimal
waste”. This certificate was to be extended
until December 2019.
However, as Pelikan has subsequently
shifted the production of its cartridges to
facilities located in China, the Ecolabel for its
remanufactured toner cartridges has had to
be entirely renewed. Pelikan revealed that
“This process has now taken place and we are
very proud to announce that Nordic Swan
extended our Ecolabel for remanufactured
toner cartridges.”
In order to receive the certificate, Pelikan’s
testing methods had to be checked by an
independent auditor to ensure they “conform
to ISO and DIN for lab analysis, printing and
page yield”, so consumers who purchase
Pelikan’s cartridges “can also be assured we
not only meet the requirements of Nordic
Ecolabel but also that of ISO and DIN.”
The Ecolabel has been awarded by Nordic
Swan, a non-profit state-owned Swedish
company “that helps consumers choose
environmentally conscious products”. The
awarding of the label by Nordic Swan proves
that Pelikan’s remanufactured toner cartridges
“meet the high standards of reducing waste
and environmental impact and fulfil the
predefined criteria”.
Niche remanufacturing –
Inside Photocopier Consumables
In today’s office imaging world, we hear more about market contraction rather than expansion. Larger players centralising
production in Vietnam, Mexico and Thailand, but little of growth in Europe. The Photocopier Consumables story is an
interesting one of two engineers that saw a niche in the market and took a chance.
David Higgott and Ian McIntyre run
Photocopier Consumables, a Coventry
(UK) based remanufacturer set up a few
years ago when they spotted a niche in
the market for remanufactured products.
David has thirty years’ experience in the
service sector as a technician and
engineer and service director and was
sourcing and selling aftermarket copier
chip solutions and undertaking research
and development for several
independent copier dealers. Ian has a
similar history and experience, and in
2012 they got together to turn their
chance into a reality.
According to David and Ian “Having
both worked in the Photocopier Industry
for many years we saw an opportunity to
bring a more technically biased product
offering to the marketplace. Initially,
relatively simple products like Drum and
Imaging Unit Chips which were a new
revelation to the industry and then new
technology such as Developer & Drum
Reseters which were developed and
produced by ourselves and this is still the
ethos of the business to this day. We later
added toner products combining
pulverised toner products for certain
older models to our much more popular
range of polymerised toner which we use
in our advanced range of toners which
are all produced in-house. We pride
ourselves not only on the
quality of our products but
also the service that we
offer to our customers.
Our dedicated sales and
technical staff, who have
many years of experience
in the industry, ensures
we provide a viable
offering to the dealer
market. We supply our
products and services to
dealers only. We are
service people for service people, and
this is very much our tagline.”
“We are service people for
service people.”
From their Coventry base, they support
over two hundred UK and Irish
independent copier dealers with a full
spectrum of remanufactured services
and products for their core specialisation
for Konica Minolta, Develop & Olivetti
devices everything from remanu-factured
toners, developer, drum and imaging
units. Where needed they also supply
products for Ricoh, Samsung, Utax,
Kyocera Mita & Sharp devices.
HP products are not in their offering.
According to Ian “there are a lot of
companies focused on HP, and we don’t
see that as a good use of our resources,
but that may change now that they have
acquired Samsung.”
The business has grown over fifty
percent in the last couple of years as
more and more European copier
dealerships look to reduce costs.
According to Ian “the copier dealer
channel is seeing cost per copy prices
Dave Higgott & Ian McIntyre
being driven lower and lower and the
Photocopier Consumables product range
offers a true alternative to the dealers
who can access high quality
remanufactured products to provide
economic cost per copy solutions and at
the same time release their technical
resources for more customer-facing
tasks.”
David, who runs the well organised
and spacious Coventry R&D and
production base has a team of eighteen
people working in production, R&D and
sales support. All of the technical team
are fully trained copier/printer
technicians, and they also have two
apprentices on the production team.
Ongoing investments in Per-Fill filing
platform has also enabled Photocopier
Consumables to launch their
Photocopier Consumables Monitor
service a state of the art monitoring
tool for print devices. Photocopier
Consumables Monitor automatically
collects meter readings and processes
consumable and service alerts from
multi-vendor print environments. This
fully customisable service is currently
their fasted growth area supporting
smaller independent dealers.
The Photocopier Consumables
ethos – Ian and David both agreed that
they see themselves as remanufacturers
and wherever possible
choose the greenest solution. “We
have run our in-house cartridge/core
collection service which is free of
charge and has been for the last four
years. We actively collect from all of
our Dealer channel end users. We fully
support UKCRA and are similarly
supported by them. We are also
members of the chartered institute of
waste management (CIWM). Joining
the CIWM was an opportunity to
access vast expertise which is
essential for our growth and
responsibilities. Looking forward we
see ongoing price pressure in the
copier dealer channel, and we can
offer a true full-service alternative to
European dealers. We can only see
serious growth potential in this channel
with the right products.”
UKCRA considers HP’s help request
The Recycle reports on the latest UKCRA meeting that was held 15th September 2017.
At their recent meeting, the
UK Cartridge Remanufacturers
Association (UKCRA) discussed at
length a request from Anthesis (UK)
Ltd, an environ-mental consultancy
firm appointed by HP to study how
many cartridges are remanufactured
and recycled each year in France,
Germany and the United Kingdom.
UKCRA Secretary, Laura
Heywood, explained that HP is
seeking very detailed information
on the market structure at the collector and broker level.
The profile of cartridges collected, what percentage goes to
the OEM and third-party remanufacturers and what
happens to unusable cartridges; what amounts are
incinerated or landfilled. HP is also seeking figures for trade
between the United Kingdom and the rest of the European
Union remanufacturers.
HP is also seeking information on how many cartridges
need to be collected to remanufacture one cartridge and
how non-OEM new built cartridges affect the market.
UKCRA members expressed concerns at the level and
detail of information HP wants and raised concerns that HP
may well gain a commercial advantage from the information
or that they may well use the information supplied for
marketing purposes.
Dr Rob Hewlett, a consultant, working for Anthesis then
gave a short presentation about the study and assured the
members that any information supplied
would only be used internally by HP.
He felt that “there are opportunities
here, particularly if we can show that
the new build compatible market is a
significant threat to both the OEM
and remanufacturing sector.”
Members agreed that UKCRA would
not support HP’s request for help, but
members could respond on a
company by company basis.
Static Control’s Simon Grimes gave
an overview of the challenges they see in the UK market and
shared some of the latest information on market trends and
market figures. In the Q&A session, Grimes faced some
tough questioning on the Lexmark chip situation which
concerned the whole audience.
“Why Remanufacture”, a topical subject among members
was the title of a presentation by David Connett, of Connett
& Unland GbR that set out the current benefits and
opportunities for all aspects of remanufacturing in Europe
and the environmental and commercial benefits that
remanufacturing brings to the EU market.
The OEM’s in 2025 - For a bit of fun the meeting
discussed a list of OEM’s and voted to say whether the OEM
brand would be around in 2025 or not. Of the nineteen
OEM’s on the list, UKCRA members think that at least six
OEM brands will not be around in 2025. Find out which ones
in the next issue of The Recycler.
Wide-Format Column
Sometimes, people vent over
solvent ink problems
The slight dizziness started bothering Billy Allen about two o’clock in the afternoon. He had noticed
watering eyes and sneezing that morning. A few minutes later, he had a “catch” in his breathing, which
was becoming laboured.
Allen was a printer who had recently
been trying out the eco-solvents on
some of his substrates. Since the
substrate – a composite fiberboard
- didn’t need coatings for the printing
with eco-solvents, it was easier to use
solvent-based inks. The color on the
fiberboard was rich and radiant and
penetrated the substrate remarkably
deep.
He had gathered a few floor fans
around the printer, as he had heard
solvents could cause health problems.
In the small building where his printer
was located – a rental – he didn’t feel
he had license for placing exhaust
fans or more intricate ventilation. Nor
did he have resources such as a
solvent recovery system.
Solvents and the lack of are the
culprits affecting Allen in this fictional
account. In hours, according to
reports, people using solvent-based
inks with volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) can garner a host of
symptoms. In the worst-case scenario,
not using adequate ventilation can
cause lung and heart problems and
diseases such as chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD).
The high amount of ink used in
wide-format printers makes their
output more prone to VOCs, which are
compounds of carbon, the most
plentiful element on Earth.
VOCs are not confined to the ink jet
printing workplace. They are in paint,
Some of these have VOCs that include
xylenes, methylene, toluene and
formaldehyde.
inks. Water-based inks also
contain VOCs, although frequently the
drying of the ink is short enough and
thorough enough so the VOCs don’t
enter the printing atmosphere. The
environmental agencies are trying to
ward off VOCs uniting with nitrogen
oxides at ground level and forming
ozone. But not all VOCs have that
tendency.
Protective measures
Any person can ignore all the
warnings and admonitions about
VOCs in solvent inks and risk serious
effects to their body or those of their
employees, but neither lawsuits nor
government fines are something most
companies wish to risk – and these
are likely for anyone risking the lives,
lungs, hearts and bodies of workers.
Most responsible employees using
solvent and eco-solvent inks,
particularly in the high-volume ink
usage of the Wide-Format field, will
take the necessary precautions. It’s as
necessary as ventilation systems and
precautions toner manufacturers use.
Responsibilities of the printing
professional – usually the production
THE RECYCLER • ISSUE 301 • DECEMBER 2017
worker – include finding out the
contents of inks they use. Imported
third-party inks often need to have a
material safety data sheet (MSDS)
with each ink to specify elements of
the ink. But those are not total
assurance, as sometimes the MSDS
doesn’t specify all ingredients that
may be considered trade secrets.
However, the nature and hazards in
the ink can usually be acquired from
the ink manufacturer to the consumer.
Water-based inks are usually
considered safe, but may contain
glycols and alcohols that comprise up
to 95 percent of the weight of the ink.
Usually it’s about a quarter of that.
But the solvents aren’t considered a
hazard to occupational hazard
monitoring. A resin of polymers
encapsulates pigments in latex inks,
but the inks use powerful dryers to dry
the ink before it is outputted or taken
onto the take-up roll.
It isn’t universal that solvent inks
like the sustainable ones are extremely
39

Wide Format Column: Sometimes, people vent over solvent ink problems
hazardous. Ethyl lactate, which
doesn’t make ozone in the atmosphere
but decomposes, is an ingredient in
what is considered “green” ink that is
a very limited hazard. Some UV-cured
inks have liquid ingredients that are
very hazardous, but most are
thoroughly cured in the printing
process, so printing in this manner
needs vigilance and MSDS sheets on
the ingredients to assure people are
protected. UV printing uses monomers
and oligomers that link together under
UV light.
Pervasive VOCs
Solvent inks work on a host of
substrates with no coating needed,
which is the most attractive aspect of
these inks. A vehicle wrap, for
instance, is an attractive application
for these inks, although latex ink
appliques are rapidly replacing solvent
inks used in vehicle wraps. Solvent
ink printing is the easiest method to
print items that will be outdoors
without lamination. And it is often
less expensive.
Eco-solvent or light solvent inks are
now used more frequently than those
with dangerous levels of VOCs.
Mimaki has introduced a hybrid
Solvent UV ink that combines
attributes of UV-curable and mild
solvent ink. This is specifically for the
Mimaki Vybrant colour printer.
Nor has 3D printing, the newest
printing kid on the block, escaped
from perusal for possible VOCs.
Davide Sher writes in 3D Printing
Industry magazine that 3DSafety.org
and WASP, an Italian 3D printer
known for its mammoth printers
printing houses, did a study that
found that during the fusion process of
items from ABS plastic filament and
other plastics, phenol, benzene,
ammonia, cyanidric acid and other
VOCs were released.
The study found 3D monofilament
nanoparticles can be absorbed directly
into the alveoli, the small bulbs that
make up the lungs. In addition, it took
10-30 minutes for the air to return to
standard levels when the 3D project
was finished.
Diseases from VOCs
All this points to one conclusion: VOCs
in some ink jet inks can interact with
the atmosphere and cause diseases in
high-volume print shops – or even
smaller businesses - that can damage
the employee’s life forever.
Most people have heard of “sick
building syndrome,” a syndrome from
buildings with high levels of VOCs that
includes irritated skin, eyes and nose,
headaches, but it doesn’t end there. It
can cause asthma and long-term
diseases such as cancer or COPD.
Plastics and synthetics are particularly
prone to releasing VOCs into our
environment.
Insulation, furniture and
pesticides can contain semivolatile
organic compounds
in poorly-ventilated areas
that will also cause illness.
A healthier alternative
In order to provide for the
safety of anyone in the print
environ-ment, there are some
steps that are critical.
One is to provide
ventilation equipment
for any printer using
solvent or even eco-solvent inks. It
amounts to an investment in the
quality of life of the employees, which
cannot be measured in dollars or
Euros. Ventilation systems,
masks for vulnerable employees and
monitoring the printing from a safe
distance are all advocated.
Those using the “safer” type of
printing – aqueous – need to be aware
that there are also VOCs in aqueous
inks. Though the ink is formulated to
have the VOCs rapidly evaporate,
being in close proximity to the inked
substrate as it is drying is not
recommended.
People who print should also get
an MSDS sheet for any ink and
especially the widely-prevalent thirdparty
inks. If all ingredients are not
listed or hidden as “proprietary,” seek
a full list of potential hazards before
using the ink.
Respiratory health and any
symptoms of dizziness, lightheadedness,
difficulty breathing,
vision problems need to be monitored
closely, too, and the person sent for
medical attention. Having employees
checked on a regular basis is a good
idea.
As one person in the officeequipment
industry has said, those in
the industry don’t fight tigers. But
printing does have its hazards, and
VOCs are one of them. It takes only
a little effort to keep everyone
healthy to and working in a safe
environment.
Retail Column
Building a Last Mile Strategy
In retail today, every conversation includes e-commerce. Whether retailers integrate their
brick and mortar stores with their website and use their stores as a delivery option, or if
their web store is a stand-alone business unit, every retailer has to consider the impact of
e-commerce and how they will address it to meet customer expectations.
For pure e-commerce companies, the
most expensive component is getting
customer orders to each customer’s
doorstep. They call it “the last mile”
and in terms of logistics, delivery
security and damage, home delivery is
the riskiest and most expensive part of
the sales cycle.
There are many systems to
efficiently move products from
manufacturers in Asia or elsewhere to
a retail warehouse. Retailers and their
vendors have been working on their
supply chains and logistics to such a
degree that they have wrung nearly all
the costs out of that portion of the
supply line. But getting products into
customer’s homes is a new capability
that has relied heavily on delivery
models that were intended for
postal delivery.
Pure e-commerce retailers have used
ideas that range from annual
membership service fees to underwrite
delivery throughout the year (Amazon
Prime, for example) to testing drones
and driverless cars. But retail stores
have what pure-e-commerce retailers
covet: street addresses in the same
neighbourhood as their customers,
which allows them to build a true
face-to-face relationship.
Retail stores offer a unique
opportunity to close the last mile gap
in a few ways:
1. The mini-warehouse model – For
low cost, bulky items a delivery fee
can erase all profit. Similarly, small
high-value items are easy targets
for thieves. Retailers can offer their
store as a mini-warehouse where
customer orders can be efficiently
delivered and wait for pick up. In
effect, the consumer handles “the
last mile.” Amazon has been testing
its lockers at retail locations across
the US, especially in low income
areas where multi-unit housing
makes delivery problematic. Other
retailers like Target and Best Buy
offer a discount to customers
who are willing to pick up
Flora Delaney
products at their nearest store
instead of home delivery.
2. The hub and spoke model –
Stores can act as local fulfillment
warehouses and the final delivery
service by sending customer orders
with route drivers. The inventory
impact and need for system
integration is significant. A variation
on this model is when the store
serves as a drop ship location from
vendors to get products to
customers. That method is more
common with pre-planned
purchases like building materials
and furniture.
In our industry, there is the
opportunity to create varying levels of
service that customers choose to
receive as the last mile preference.
Customers can use the store as a
secure location to aggregate their
order and have it ready to go when
they arrive. Usually that can be
accomplished on the same day, as long
as store personnel have access to
orders on the web. Or they can have
their ink and toner delivered on a
regular schedule that can be adjusted
up or down with enough notice
through a web interface. Finally, they
can opt to have a white glove service
treatment which borders on managed
print services: a delivery route person
monitors supply levels and may even
install and maintain printers at the
customer’s location.
For store managers and small
business owners, it is important to
look at your customer base and
make decisions now about how you
will play in the “last mile” game to
build sustained relevancy for your
target market.
If your customers are primarily
consumers who use private cars while
shopping, the mini-warehouse model
may be the most valuable option.
Create an order pick-up station where
customers can park in dedicated
convenient stalls, find their order
quickly at the store front and show ID
or other steps to secure their order. If
demand is high enough, offer curb side
delivery service by one of your staff
members. The key to succeeding with
this model is speed and convenience.
Make the stop as simple as possible to
prevent customers from moving to a
home delivery model. To make this
mini-warehouse model work
economically, the key is to entice
customers to use this convenient
service to gain a greater share of their
wallet. If a customer is only picking up
ink and toner, provide them with a
bounce-back offer that gives them a
discount the next time when they
include reams of paper as well. Or
consider offering your customers
connections to neighbouring (noncompeting)
businesses by including
their coupons or advertisements in the
packed orders for a small charge.
Finally, work to delight and surprise
these customers with unexpected addon
and thank-you items that will build
loyalty. For example, if you are closing
out a range of goods (pens or folders,
for example) at a discount, consider
giving away a free sample to your
pick-up customers as a way of saying
thank you and to remind them that
you carry other goods they can
purchase. Always include a strong
marketing message with any giveaway.
Consider looking for products from
your vendors that can specifically work
as giveaway items such as notepads
that will act as ongoing reminders.
If your customers are primarily
business customers who expect
delivery to their premises, the hub and
spoke model is likely the most
appropriate option. Lease or purchase a
delivery vehicle and hire a route driver
who understands that their job isn’t
just safe driving and reliable deliveries
but building relationships and sales. To
achieve that, make sure they are given
the incentive to be cordial and friendly
above achieving an hourly delivery
rate. Consider expanding your offerings
to bring new business supplies to your
customers like cleaning supplies,
tissues, envelopes and other business
consumable items to gain a greater
share of their wallet. If your delivery
service is friendly and reliable and your
prices are similar, why wouldn’t a
business customer start to shift their
perception of what you offer and give
you a try? And finally, in an effort to
delight and surprise your business
customers, consider how you can
leverage the delivery capability you
have built into new ways to meet their
needs. Could you offer to deliver other
items during peak times to help
business customers? Consider
shredding services, a special service to
shuttle dry cleaning for business
executives, deliver flowers for special
occasions or add legal/secure courier
services to meet your customers needs.
To truly succeed with delivery there
is a simple way to satisfy your
customers: communicate. Set up an
automated process so that customers
know when their order has left your
building. A simple text or email that
says “your order left our store and it
will arrive today” could be enough.
Finally, if your customer base is a
blend of end consumers who use public
transportation and businesses, consider
a hybrid model where customers can
opt in and out of delivery. These are
the exact customers who often find
home delivery to be problematic, so
creating a locked location like a secure
bin that they can access can be ideal.
Provide a subscription service for
accepting deliveries on their behalf and
depositing it into their bin as a service
that could become a new revenue
stream with an investment in space
and lockers. You will want to consult a
legal advisor on how to structure such
a contract, but it is a service that is in
demand amongst a portion of most
urban residents.
As you look at your operation,
consider how taking proactive steps
to close The Last Mile with your
customers could help you build
your business.
NORTH AMERICA Epson,
ReadyInk, Service
Epson
launches new
ReadyInk
service
Epson’s new “hassle-free”
ReadyInk technology means
consumers can register to
maintain their Epson ink supply.
ReadyInk is described by Epson as a
“hassle-free and subscription-free
service” which allows its consumers
to register with their retailer or
reseller when they purchase their
printer and sign up for this
automated system, which will supply
“genuine ink cartridges” whenever
their ink begins to run low.
ReadyInk is available on most of
Epson’s latest printers. As
consumers use their printer, the
technology runs in the background
and monitors ink levels. When the
printer begins to run low, a
notification is sent which initiates
the process of ordering a new Epson
ink cartridge, which will arrive
“before the last one runs out.”
Epson explains that all the inks
are “available as individual
cartridges” so consumers only have
to replace the colour that has been
depleted. Additionally, the
company’s site explains that using
its cartridges will “reduce the chance
of misprints and the inks are tested
so you can trust the quoted yield.”
MPS Monitor to provide the new HP SDS
support services for the latest generations of
HP printers. Thanks to SDS, they obtain
significant savings whilst improving service
levels”, says Nicola De Blasi, CEO of MPS
Monitor Srl. “With this new SaaS version, all
HP Partners can make the most of these
advantages straight away, cost-effectively and
without any negative impact on their
business processes”.
“MPS Monitor SDS allows us to meet the
needs of the HP Partners who, although they
want to offer SDS services to their customers
using the necessary management software
features, are not looking for a complete
Managed Print Services platform”, underlines
Giorgio Gesi, CEO of Oberon Service.
“Thanks to our close collaboration with HP,
we have been among the first to allow
integration of MPS Monitor with HP
JetAdvantage Management. The new version
of MPS Monitor SDS highlights our ability
to meet the specific needs of each partner
and thus better serve the entire ecosystem of
HP Partners”.
