SPIKE ISLAND PLACES SECOND AT THE WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS
2017 IN VIETNAM, AHEAD OF THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA AND
MOUNT KILIMANJARO IN THE ‘WORLD’S LEADING TOURIST
ATTRACTION’ CATEGORY
Cork County Council attraction Spike Island has placed second at the World Travel Awards
2017, in a ceremony held in Vietnam for the global elite of the travel industry. The island was
second behind overall winner Machu Picchu from a shortlist of 9 finalists, that also included
Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great wall of China and the Burj Khalifa.
The island had previously won the title of ‘Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2017’ at the
European Gala held in St Petersburg, Russia, beating an extremely competitive field that included
Buckingham Palace, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and the Coliseum of Rome. The
island went forward to represent Europe and its placing effectively sees it named the world
number 2 visitor attraction.
In attendance at the Gala World Final in Vietnam were Mayor of County Cork Declan Hurley,
County Manager Tim Lucey and Divisional Manager Declan Daly. Mayor of County Cork Declan
Hurley expressed his delight at the islands placing and overall success since its reopening in
June 2016. “The redevelopment of the island has been carried out to a very high standard
with several visitor attractions added, as well as a cafe and island walkways”. “Cork County
Council and Failte Ireland backed the redevelopment of the island and these awards fully justify
that decision”. “To have a world beating tourist attraction right on our doorstep is a huge
bonus for County Cork and will no doubt prove a massive attraction for years to come”.
The award caps off an extraordinary 18 months for the island attraction which was used as
a prison as recently as 2004. Responsibility for the island was handed over to Cork County
Council in 2010 and a masterplan was developed that saw over 6 Million Euro invested by
Cork County Council and Failte Ireland. The island reopened in June 2016 and it has welcomed
over 45000 visitors in its first full year. It has also become the number one recommended
thing to do in Cork on Tripadvisor, overtaking long term number one Fota Wildlife
Park.
Also in attendance at the event was County Manager Tim Lucey who spoke of his delight at
this and the other recognition the Island has received in 2017. “As well as winning Europe’s
Leading tourist attraction and this excellent showing at the World finals, the Island has won
a Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Award in the Heritage and Built Environment
category, as well as a Cork Business Award in 2017. Visitor numbers have increased
significantly and the island is proving be a real highlight for visitors to Cork”.
Island Manager John Crotty said he believed the Islands success comes from its unique history,
its Cork Harbour setting and the variety of ways to enjoy a visit to the island. “There
really is something for everyone here. We have 1300 years of rich Irish history to tell, from
a 6th century Monastery to a 18th century Fortress, the World’s Largest Island prison in the
1850’s to centuries of island homes. Visitors have the option of a guided tour or they can self
explore our prison cells, military fortification and walk the beautiful outer island, so there is
something for everyone, from naturists to history buffs and adventurers young and old!”.
Cork County Council aim to add more ferry options in 2018 to meet the rising demand, along
with opening up the previously inaccessible Fortress Moat and adding further designated outer
island walking trails, to cope with the growing visitor numbers.
The long term plan for the island is to redevelop the remaining unused large scale prison
blocks and outer island, with suggestions for development including a National Aquarium and
maritime center, a National Military Museum and providing accommodation on the island.

Fota Wildlife Park is calling on your help to record
hibernating ladybirds!
Fota Wildlife Park in partnership with University College Cork, School of Biological, Earth
and Environmental Sciences are managing a citizen science research project on ‘The status,
threats, protection and conservation of ladybirds in Ireland’. The project is funded by Fota
Wildlife Park and the Irish Research Council. It is a citizen science project which means that
the public is needed to get involved by sending their ladybird photographs and information to
ladybird@fotawildlife.ie.
A crucial part of this project involves the study of hibernating ladybirds which is occurring at
this time of the year. Fota Wildlife Park are asking the public, whether at home, in their gardens
or out and about, to help by photographing and documenting any ladybirds they find.
Gill Weyman, research scholar said “This is an important project on a critical species and the
knowledge gained from this project will contribute to the national understanding of ladybirds
and their ecology. Areas to look for ladybirds hibernating include: trees, fences, sheds or
around window sills in buildings.”
The information gathered will also help map the distribution of the Harlequin ladybird, which
is an invasive ladybird species that was first recorded in 2009 in Co. Antrim.
If you are in your garden, going for a walk or at work and you see a ladybird:
Leave it on the plant/place that you found it.
Take a photo.
Make a note of where it is, date, time, description.
Email the information to ladybird@fotawildlife.ie
Photographs are very important as they help to verify records.
If you are unsure about anything, help is at hand on www.biology.ie where there are identification
guides or email ladybird@fotawildlife.ie for advice and further information.
Invalidity Pension Extended to Self-Employed – Minister David Stanton
David Stanton, Fine Gael TD for Cork East and Minister of
State at the Department of Justice & Equality has welcomed
the extension of Invalidity Pension to self-employed
persons. The extension means that from the 1st December
2017 all self-employed persons can apply under the
scheme.
“This is the first time that people who are self-employed,
who have paid S class contributions, will be able to apply
for Invalidity Pension. Invalidity Pension is a weekly social
protection payment to people who are unable to work due to long-term illness or disability.
These changes should greatly improve the illness supports available to self-employed persons
many of whom run small businesses which create jobs by providing employment to others as
well as themselves.
“Improving supports for small businesses and the self-employed has been prioritised by Fine
Gael since we entered Government in 2011. It is part of our polity of making work pay and
encouraging entrepreneurship which includes expanding entitlements and supports to the
self-employed. Extending PRSI benefits such as Invalidity Pension and the optical and dental
Treatment Benefit Scheme which was extended to the self-employed earlier this year is one of
the ways we are supporting the self-employed.
“Another area which we are looking at is taxation. We are moving towards the equalisation
of income tax credits between self-employed people and PAYE workers. The change in the
recent budget means that self-employed people will pay €200 less per year in tax from 2018,
following our decision to extend the earned-income tax credit to credit €1,150.
“I am pleased that we have extended the availability of Invalidity Pension without increasing
the rate of PRSI paid by employees, employers and the self-employed. Qualification for the
payment is based on satisfying the medical criteria and a minimum of 260 PRSI contributions
with 48 paid or credited in previous tax year. This payment is not means tested so any savings,
assets or income from partners do not affect the rate.
“I understand that, as of 1st December, it is also open to any self-employed people who are
out of work through illness to apply for Invalidity Pension, however, they will need to satisfy
the medical and PRSI conditions. The improvement of benefits and entitlements for the is in
recognition of the significant contribution of self-employed and small and family businesses to
our society.
‘Rubber neckers love the sight of blood and guts’ - Trevor Laffan
They were called traffic accidents once upon a time and then that changed to crashes. Now
it seems that they are referred to as Road Traffic Collisions.
Well, whatever you chose to call them, accidents, crashes or
collisions, they happen regularly on our roads.
They come in all shapes and sizes and vary from fender benders
to the more serious, involving death and serious injury.
The one thing that they all have in common though, is that
they attract curious glances from people passing by. Whether
it’s the sight of blood and guts or broken cars, the fact is that
there are some who get a thrill from watching the scene of
a crash. It’s not unusual to see people slowing down at an
accident and straining their necks to see what’s going on. It’s
called ‘Rubber necking’. Other drivers will often take it a step
further by parking their cars nearby and walking back to the scene to get a better look.
Gardai in Waterford took to Twitter to advise motorists that five drivers had been fined for
using their mobile phones to film or photograph a traffic accident while they were driving their
own cars. Their behaviour was described as dangerous and inappropriate, and rightly so. Why
anyone would feel it necessary to photograph a crash site in the first place is beyond me.
Many years ago, I was at the scene of a serious accident in Cork. There was one car involved
and it went straight into a wall after failing to take the corner. The steering wheel had become
embedded in the driver’s stomach. He was leaning over the steering wheel, alive but unconscious.
The plan was to cut the steering column from the car and leave it attached to the driver for
doctors to remove at the hospital. A fireman asked me to hold the drivers head up off the
steering wheel while he cut it off. (The steering wheel, not the head).
As you can imagine, we were operating in a confined space and it was difficult work.
I suddenly became aware of movement next to me and I saw an individual trying to squeeze
his head into the car. This guy had no business whatsoever being there, and he was getting in
the way. I recognised him, and I knew he was not a member of the emergency services. He
actually worked in a fast food outlet.
He parked his car across the road and came back for a gawk. Not only was he trying to see
what was going on, but he was being a complete nuisance.
He was advised in plain English to remove himself from the car and he was lucky that one of
the firemen didn’t land him in the ambulance. He seemed to be a little confused as to why
people were getting annoyed with him and he obviously believed it was perfectly normal behaviour
to be crawling over firemen.
The term rubbernecking is used to describe the actions of drivers who are trying to watch
something happening at the side of the road instead of concentrating on driving. That has the
potential to cause delays for other drivers and can also lead to further accidents.
Reacting to the scene of a crash is natural because people will be curious about the commotion.
But when the cause is identified as a serious accident then the aim should be to get out
of the way as quickly as possible and allow the professionals to do what needs to be done.
Slowing down for a nose doesn’t help and getting in the way is definitely not recommended.

For most people, the prospect of seeing victims at the side of the road with severe injuries is
a turn off. It’s enough to cause most of us to divert our gaze and to keep going. But that’s not
the case for everyone.
But morbid curiosity is nothing new. There was a time when crowds were attracted to public
hangings and there was only one reason they went. They wanted to see other humans coming
to a sticky end.
Penal executions in early modern Europe were civic events and were considered to be a form
of entertainment. Executions were organized by town officials and conducted in full view of
the expectant public. The prisoners were paraded from the prison to the execution site and to
the waiting spectators.
Public punishments such as whippings and executions, were always very popular and were
normally well attended events. In the days before newspapers, they also served a practical
purpose. By allowing the natives to see justice done, officials hoped to encourage others to
think twice about committing crime.
In some cases, judges ordered the executions to be carried out at the scene of the crime. An
early crime prevention technique if you like. These days we get crime prevention advice from
An Garda Siochana and it’s a bit more civilised.
Back in the 18th century, executions were very much a spectator sport for all classes of
society, the wealthy as well as the poor. Seats were arranged like grandstands at a football
stadium and were very expensive. Two shillings (10p) was a lot of money in the 1700’s. These
events attracted huge numbers of onlookers and the better off would rent rooms in houses
opposite the gallows to get the best view.
In ancient Rome, large crowds gathered to watch Gladiators fight each other to the death. It
was survival of the fittest. An underdog might be spared by the crowd to fight again but if a
favourite lost, his fans could easily turn on him and call for his blood or maybe even his head.
So, it seems the thirst for blood and guts goes back a long way.
