Business Matters
City is central to the
Tube station pay gap
WE’VE all heard of the gender pay gap, but how
many have come across the Tube line pay gap?
New research published by job site Adzuna has
revealed the stations where the City’s high rollers
make their daily commute, and with some of
these pay packets, a packed Tube is a small price
to pay.
Earning on average £52,000 a year, commuters
at the Barbican are the highest paid in the Capital.
Coming a close second are those who use the
insurance industry’s spiritual home of Monument
(£51,222), followed by two more underwriter’s
favourites tied for third – Bank and Cannon Street
commuters tolling an average of £51,217.
The results also revealed the best stretch
of London Underground if you want to rub
shoulders with the rich, in this case the Waterloo
& City line (average earnings £50,990).
Pinpoint
Second and third were the Circle and Central
lines at £47,738 and £46,375 respectively. The
Victoria line came in last, which runs through
some deprived areas and misses the financial
centre of the City.
Adzuna co-founder Doug Monro said
jobseekers hoping for a step up the pay scale can
pinpoint better paid positions by looking closely
at the location of company HQs.
“Roles in central London typically come
hand-in-hand with more money, with positions
near Tube stops Barbican, Monument and Bank
proving most lucrative. But there are some
exceptions for workers who are reluctant to
commute – if you know where to look.”
So, there you have it, if you want a comfortable
commute, sacrifice the big bucks. However, if you
don’t mind a hot, sweaty, cramped journey every
morning, the sunny uplands of the 40% income
tax bracket await. Maybe just cycle?
SOCIAL mobility was the word on everyone’s
lips when the Worshipful Company of
International Bankers (WCIB) celebrated the
10th anniversary of its annual Schools Essay
competition this month, supported by Citybased
charity The Brokerage.
The contest aims to raise aspirations
of non-advantaged Londoners, encouraging
them to explore the employment areas on their
pen pals: shortlisted entrants
were commended for their efforts
Youngsters have ‘write’ stuff
doorstep in the City. This year, state-educated
sixth form students were invited to submit
an essay on a hot topic from the world of
finance.
A total of 138 students from 14 schools and
sixth form colleges penned reports considering
the impact of cashless payments, ongoing
developments in fintech, and on traditional
financial services.
In the first stage, each school selected its own
winner, with triumphant entrants then invited
to the final awards ceremony, where the overall
winner was decided by the WCIB.
Commended
The prizegiving took place at the London
office of ING on 5 December. Olivia Lalsee
from St Saviour and St Olave’s School took
first place, and was presented with her award
and congratulated by the Master of the WCIB
Alderman Peter Estlin.
Abdus Ali from Greig City Academy, Alaa
Lafta from King Solomon Academy, and
Bradley Marshall from Woolwich Polytechnic
School were highly commended.
Olivia: “I was really pleased when I found out
I’d won the competition – I wasn’t expecting it
at all. I’m studying economics for A-level and I
Pessimism lurks
over the Capital
EMPLOYERS in London are the most
pessimistic about hiring for four years, according
to workforce analyst ManpowerGroup.
Some demand for candidates persists,
particularly due to regulatory changes in the
financial sector, although supply across the
region has been hit by Brexit uncertainty – so
says the Manpower Employment Outlook
Survey, which is based on responses from 2,102
UK employers.
Uncertainty
It asked whether bosses intend to hire
additional workers or reduce the size of their
staff in the coming quarter, and is used as a key
economic statistic by both the Bank of England
and government.
“We have not seen such hiring pessimism since
2013, when the country was getting back on its
feet after the financial crisis. In line with the rest
really enjoyed all the research I had to do for the
essay. I now have a much better understanding
of how money moves and how technology is
changing the banking world. In particular, the
whole area of cashless payments really interests
me.”
Her submission drew high praise from Mr
Estlin: “The winning entry was well researched,
focusing on how the lives of everyday people
are, on balance, being made easier, though
noting the risks of fraud and abuse.
Networking
“Olivia also went on to look at the international
development of mobile payments and the impact
these are having on communities in Africa.”
Previous competition winners have gone on to
pursue successful careers, including Isimemen
Avbulimen, who won the competition in 2010.
She said: “Winning the competition has
played a big part in where I am now. It definitely
boosted my confidence in networking and I was
able to talk about my experience in university
interviews.
“Researching for the essay also sparked my
interest in education provision, so much so that
I now work at the Department for Education.”
of the country, Brexit uncertainty appears to be
the main culprit,” explained ManpowerGroup’s
operations director Simon Edwards.
“Finance and business services jobs confidence
across the country has dipped three points to
+6%, and subdued hiring in London reflects this.
“When employers are recruiting, we can see
that non-UK nationals are less willing to fill
these roles in London, with sterling’s devaluation
denting the appeal of jobs in the Capital.
“Many City firms are under pressure to appoint
staff before European regulation from Mifid II
kicks in, and it has also become more difficult to
appoint bar and restaurant workers since the EU
referendum.”
However, Mr Edwards said that there is
some light on the horizon, with large tech firms
confirming their confidence in post-Brexit Britain
by announcing intentions to grow their workforces
in London.
“Spotify is upsizing from its current premises
as it looks to expand its team over the next two
years,” he said. “While Facebook is also opening
new offices in London which may lead to the
creation of 800 new jobs, most of which will be
in engineering.”
