Gardening Tips
For January
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food.
• Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering.
• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms.
• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in
drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and
quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting.
• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1
teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or
blood meal. Water in.
• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown.
• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often.
Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias.
• Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture.
• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with
dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and
heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying.
• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and
coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted.
• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove
dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape
myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant.
• Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later
appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of
new beds for roses.
• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and
deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and
cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group
plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.
• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure.
• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings,
particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch,
but remove when weather warms.

VOTERS APPROVE BOND 2017
Voters approved Lamar CISD’s 2017 Bond package, with
slightly more than 60 percent of those going to the polls
authorizing the District to raise money to deal with
increased enrollment.
The final tally from the Fort Bend County Elections Office
was 4,721 for the bond proposal and 3,044 against.
Once sold, bond revenue will purchase land, build a
new high school, a junior high and three elementary
schools. The District will also make improvements to
current facilities and purchase technology and buses.
“I want to thank the members of our community for
showing their continued support for public education,”
said Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Randle.
“I believe it is your commitment that has made Lamar
CISD a popular destination for families. My pledge is
to work with the School Board to build schools and
facilities our community will be proud of, while keeping
an eye on our tax dollars.”
IMPORTANT DATES
January 1 st - Holiday - Students & Staff
January 2 nd - Teacher Preparation Day
January 3 rd - First Day of Spring Semester
January 15 th - Campus Professional Learning Day - Student Holiday
would blossom into a thriving community of more than 17,000 people. The
current Katy Elementary campus was built in 1965, renovated in 1989 and
again in 1995. Today, students play on the same location as the original
playground and the first schoolhouse bell hangs in the main entrance of the
current campus.
“Today’s paw prints are tomorrow’s legacy,” said Superintendent Lance
Hindt during the ceremony where past generations of students and staff
members were present. Among those in the crowd was 92-year-old Melvin
Jordan who recalls riding on horseback with his brothers to and from school
as a first grader. Currently, there are 11 students attending Katy Elementary
who are 5 th and 6 th generation members of the original class of Katy Tigers!
VOTERS APPROVE KATY ISD $609.2 MM REFERENDUM
In November, voters approved the Katy Independent School District’s 2017
bond, which will provide relief to campuses managing a rapidly growing
student population, along with renovations and improvements for 61
campuses. According to unofficial results, the $609.2 MM bond passed by an
approximate 65% voter approval.
“Katy ISD is the second fastest growing school district in the state of
Texas,” said Superintendent Lance Hindt. “Families continue to move to
Katy because of the quality learning opportunities our teachers and staff
provide to each and every student. This bond will help to ensure that our
community’s expectations for high educational standards and schools are
maintained now and well into the future.”
KATY ELEMENTARY RECEIVES HISTORICAL MARKER
AS FIRST SCHOOLHOUSE IN KATY, TX
As residents drive by Katy Elementary, a bright blue historical marker
now sits on the campus at the same spot where the first City of Katy
schoolhouse was built 119 years ago. On Friday, November 10 th , the
Harris County Historical Society honored the founding fathers by
granting a historical marker to the city’s first public school.
A one-room schoolhouse was built in 1898 where children could learn,
grow and develop. Little did the visionaries know that their small town
The District’s 2017 bond comes with a zero tax rate increase and is designed
to address fast growth and aging facilities. It includes six new schools,
one comprehensive renovation, along with repairs and upgrades to 61
campuses. Bond funds will also provide many campuses with safety and
security improvements and school expansions at Raines High School
and Katy High School’s Career and Technical Education program (CTE).
Technology and infrastructure upgrades are also included for all Katy ISD
schools, as well as replacement of aging buses and portables and fuel
storage tanks. Ninety-one percent (91%) of bond funds will directly impact
campuses and student learning.
Blood Donor Month
Blood donors are ordinary people - high school students, factory
and office workers, business executives, parents and grandparents
and people from every walk of life. But they share one thing - a
generous spirit, a desire to give back to their community and help
others. Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern
healthcare. Many lifesaving medical treatments and procedures
involve blood transfusions and would not be possible without a
safe and reliable blood supply.
The Red Cross is also a leader in research and testing to protect the
safety of the blood supply. They were among the first to develop
and implement testing for many infectious diseases including, HIV,
hepatitis B and C viruses, West Nile virus and more recently the
agent of Chagas disease.
If you already donate blood, thank you! You are making a lifesaving
contribution that benefits accident victims, cancer patients,
surgical candidates, children with blood disorders and many
others. If you have never donated blood, please consider doing so.
Your donations are always in constant demand.
STANDUP FOR KIDS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids
is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of
at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts.
Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and
otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives.
Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets
from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics
Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given
time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which
provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for
the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization
would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids,
please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn
more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our
website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need,
for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real
support. We must convince them that we care, we want them
back and we want to help them get off the streets.
we aide and support the family by relieving the caregiver. If interested,
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help
prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council
for Jewish Women (NCJW).
The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer
kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW
programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact
info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.
KATY AREA RIDE SERVICE NEEDS YOUR
HELP DRIVING OLDER ADULTS
Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting
seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering,
visiting a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and occasional medical rides.
Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are age
65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, may use walking aids). Time
commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you want
to drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker Cypress,
north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at the Grand
Parkway. Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity to help
seniors retain independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers tell us the
day(s) and times they are able to drive. Drivers choose if they wait for the
senior or return later to pick them up. Drivers must be between 21 years
of age and 78 years of age with a good driving record, pass a background
check and show proof of insurance coverage (state minimums) as required
by the State of Texas.
To request a volunteer driver application, call 832-773-8645 or email info@
karskaty.org. KARS operates under an official 501(c)(3) that designates it
as a transportation service provider for seniors and non-wheelchair bound
persons with disabilities.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope
and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through
his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service
that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday,
we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that
empowered his revolutionary spirit.
Dr. King knew that it wasn’t enough just to talk the talk, that he had to walk the walk for his
words to be credible. And so we commemorate on this holiday the man of action, who put
his life on the line for freedom and justice every day, the man who braved threats and jail
and beatings and who ultimately paid the highest price to make democracy a reality for all
Americans.
On this day we commemorate Dr. King’s great dream of a vibrant, multiracial nation united in
justice, peace and reconciliation; a nation that has a place at the table for children of every
race and room at the inn for every needy child. It is a day of interracial and intercultural
cooperation and sharing. No other day of the year brings so many peoples from different
cultural backgrounds together in such a vibrant spirit of brother and sisterhood. Whether
you are African-American, Hispanic or Native American, whether you are Caucasian or Asian-
American, you are part of the great dream Martin Luther King, Jr. had for America. This is not
a black holiday; it is a peoples’ holiday.
We commemorate on this holiday the ecumenical leader and visionary who embraced the
unity of all faiths in love and truth. And though we take patriotic pride that Dr. King was
an American, on this holiday we must also commemorate the global leader who inspired
nonviolent liberation movements around the world. Indeed, on this day, programs
commemorating my husband’s birthday are being observed in more than 100 nations.
The Holiday commemorates America’s pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence - the man who
taught by his example that nonviolent action is the most powerful, revolutionary force for
social change available to oppressed people in their struggles for liberation.
This holiday honors the courage of a man who endured harassment, threats and beatings and
even bombings. We commemorate the man who went to jail 29 times to achieve freedom for
others and who knew he would pay the ultimate price for his leadership, but kept on marching
and protesting and organizing anyway.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and
tribute, but above all a day of service. All across America on the Holiday, his followers perform
service in hospitals and shelters and prisons and wherever people need some help. It is a
day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those who can’t read,
mentoring at-risk youngsters, consoling the broken-hearted and a thousand other projects
for building the beloved community of his dream.
We call you to commemorate this Holiday by making your personal commitment to serve humanity
with the vibrant spirit of unconditional love that was his greatest strength and which empowered
Happy New Year - Crystal Ball: 2018
New Year’s Resolutions: “Our resolutions are always to do our best
each year. We make reasonable resolutions to do better than the year
before.”
How they ring in the new year: “We have a huge Colombian/Mexican
Feast! There is food for days. Tamales, Empanadas, Beans, Natilla,
Bunellos, Sweet Breads, Arrepa, Roasts, Ham...... oh my! We turn
up the music, move all the rugs and dance for hours. The children laugh and play and we end the night with fireworks.”
Special NED Munchies: Mom makes Pork Posole for New Year’s Day and fresh hot chocolate. Posole is a light stew
with Posole, Pork, Onion, garlic, Hatch green chili and spices that they buy straight from New Mexico.
It reminds them of waking up on a cold morning in Colorado, their home state.
What the New Year means for their family: “The new year is a great time to reflect on the things that we did to help
other and ourselves, and to decide what we need to do to improve and grow! It is another day to decide to be our best and
to be examples to others. It’s a time for Gabriel and I to strengthen our marriage and reinforce good habits and mottos
to our children: Honor, Courtesy,Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Courage, Community, Strength, Humility and
Knowledge.”
2017 Reflections: This year, the Family went to Port Richey, Clearwater, and Tampa, Florida. Their only plan was to
relax and enjoy each other and the beaches. They went to 8 different beaches in 7 days (yowza!) and they did not stress
over agendas or schedules. They enjoyed the ocean waves, collected shells, walked on the beach, sun tanned, surfed and
dug giant holes in the sand. Sounds like pure relaxation!
2018 Predictions: “We as a unit believe that God is always in control. We fully trust that there is good will in all humans.
Each morning we pray for our current leaders to do their best for the American people.”
2018 Plans: “We just sold our house in Katy and are moving to a bigger home that we have been patiently waiting for.
The children will will start at a new school next year and they are excited to make new friends.
We are expanding our Trucking Company and plan to hire another driver.”
Favorite things to do in your area as a family: This family has a mild obsession with Typhoon Texas, visiting the
aquatic oasis at least 4-5 times a week during the summer. Their favorite place to bike ride and fly the drone is Paul D.
Rushing park, and Mary Jo Peckham park is their go-to place to fish and run around the playground. Also, enjoying the
green space and shopping at La Centerra is high on their list of favorites. Just outside the city, this crew loves to head out
to Blessington Farm and Dewberry Farms for some good old fashioned country fun, enjoying the beloved giant slides
and corn maze as well as picking berries.
Why They Live in Katy
“Katy has been very good to us. At any time
during the day you see your neighbors walking the
streets, the children playing ball and roller skating
in the streets. Our neighbor is always smoking
meats and making our street smell fantastic. We
trade food over our fence! Lol! Families swim in
the community pool and picnic for hours. There
is always some kind of community event for
families. It’s amazing.”
