36 A VIEW FROM THE BOOK

36 A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK Chris Fraser The Book Nook — “A Lending Library” We are open Monday to Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm * * * * I am really pleased to tell you that we now have the latest Ken Follett book “A Column of Fire”. If any of you read “The Pillars of the Earth”, you are going to love this new book. In 1558, Kingsbridge Cathedral looks down on a country that is torn by religious intolerance. At this time, Mary Queen of Scots, better known as “Bloody Mary”, is on the throne and has ordered that all Protestants be murdered because of their religious beliefs. After Queen Mary is executed, Elizabeth takes over the throne and tries to bring religious tolerance, which turns all of Europe against England. Ned Willard wants to marry Margery Fitzgerald, however, Ned is a Protestant while Margery is a Catholic, therefore dooming their relationship. Ned leaves and goes to work for Princess Elizabeth, who then becomes Queen. To keep herself on the throne, she sets up England’s first secret service to find out about various plots, rebellions and invasion plans and Ned becomes one of her courageous secret agents. However, there are those who want to impose their ideas on everyone and start a rebellion, therefore giving them more power. This is such an absorbing and exciting book, full of historical details, it was really hard to put it down. I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I did. Happy reading! 37 If prearranged and prepaid by December 31, 2018 If prearranged and prepaid by December 31, 2018 (Continued from page 3) I'd like to give special recognition to Chartwell Royal on Gordon Retirement Place who sponsored the 'goodies' for the Outreach participants who attended the Nov. 30th Show. Chartwell's generosity is greatly appreciated and it's another example of their thoughtful kindness for their Seniors and for the GWSA. I can guarantee that you will be greatly entertained, so mark your calendar for SHOWTIME 2018. Please look in this issue for Ross Coulter's article on the Show (so much better than mine!!), and Bill Adam's action pictures of the rehearsals. Dec. 11 — Unveiling the GWSA 100 Year Old Club. On a beautiful Monday morning, the GWSA unveiled the 100 Year Old Club and the individual plaques for the first GWSA Members who were actively involved at the Evergreen Seniors Centre when they turned 100. Charlie Corcoran and Veronica Turner were honoured. Charlie attended and is now 103 years old and Veronica was honoured posthumously. The 100 Year Old Club is a wonderful inspiration for everyone to one day have their plaque on this Wall of Fame. LOOKING AHEAD: The Evergreen Centre will be CLOSED from July 3rd to Aug 7th to EVERYONE. The City is paving the parking lot, putting in new sidewalks and doing updates inside the building. Only workers will be on the property. The EVERGREEN CENTRE will be closed to EVERYONE, including City staff who will be relocated to other City facilities. Please read Wendy Kornelson's report in this issue regarding this Parking Lot project. All Activity Leaders are asked to be sure and attend all Program meetings to obtain regular updates on the Parking Lot topic. Activity Leaders are the very important crucial communication link to all our GWSA Members. Contact your Program Co-Chairs Kerry Detlor and Tony Pellizari with any of your questions or concerns regarding your Activity Group. Remember, my card is at the front counter with my cell and email address if you want to meet and chat about any GWSA topic. I'm in the Boardroom on Mondays to meet, though occasionally I do have other meetings. Dorothy Riley is the volunteer at the front counter on Mondays, with whom I check in and she always knows where I am. December 14 — City of Guelph Manager of Parks and Recreation, Heather Flaherty, presented to the GWSA Directors and Activity Leaders the City's vision for the new South End Recreation Centre (SERC). Of course the GWSA would like to have a voice at the City's table in terms of advocating for Seniors Programming in the new SERC. More details to follow in the next Sentinel issue. 2018 is going to be another wonderful year at the GWSA. Many thanks to ALL of you who make this Seniors Centre a great place to "BE ACTIVE, GET INVOLVED, MAKE FRIENDS". Best always, Dorothe Fair T S - J 2018
