BITS AND BUSES
...............................
ON THE BUSES #33: LORD COHEN (ROUTES 7 & 5A)
Affectionally known as ‘Mr Brighton’, Lord Cohen was a city planner of great
ambition, who made a lasting impact on local housing… though some of his
more unusual ideas failed to materialize. These included creating a continental
bathing site by the West Pier, a garden path stretching from Preston Park to the
sea, and an entertainment pavilion on the seafront.
The founder of the Alliance Building Society, Cohen improved the lives of
many Brighton & Hove residents with his flair for town planning. Under his
guidance, affordable housing was constructed in the suburbs, bettering the living
conditions of hundreds. Cohen also enabled home ownership for those for whom
it had previously been thought impossible, through the provision of mortgages.
A socialist, Cohen acted as a Labour councillor and was elected mayor by the
then predominantly Tory Brighton Borough Council.
Cohen was a flamboyant character and was well liked within the community, although his bid to be MP for
Kemptown was unsuccessful. He is credited with acquiring land for the University of Sussex and saving the
Theatre Royal. He was often referred to as a ‘one-man benevolent fund for the town’; many turned to Cohen for
advice and emergency funding.
‘Mr Brighton’ died suddenly of leukaemia in 1966, aged 69. He thus missed the inauguration of the Brighton
Festival in the following year, which is a great pity: he had been one of the motivating forces behind Brighton’s
cultural showcase. Saskia Solomon
