It’s my job to make sure that the horses look and behave like horses. A puppet has to come alive on stage and the biggest clue to life is breath. You can tell a lot about emotion from that: if the horse is breathing really slowly, you know it’s probably relaxed; if it’s fast and shallow, you know that the horse is nervous or scared or angry. And then it’s the breath that binds all of the puppeteers together. They can’t talk to each other during the show because they’re all radio miked, so they use the breathing to communicate. Things often happen on an in-breath; when you stand up off your chair you take a little breath in before you raise up, so that’s a very useful thing for the puppeteers. All of the puppets are built so that the strings and the elastics are in the same places that the muscles would be on the real horse, so you get a realistic curl of the leg and bend of the knee. What’s amazing is what the audience’s imagination then puts onto the horses. There have often been people who say that they saw the horse blink, but we don’t make the horses blink. People have said ‘I saw the hair on the horse get really matted and dirty in the second half…’ That hasn’t actually happened, but it’s amazing what your imagination fills in, and how much the audience is invested in the puppets. There’s one scene where there are four horses on stage, and a gun, and a lot of soldiers, and it’s all to music and there are a lot of cues. It’s a tricky scene just because of the number of bodies, and it’s a very physical sequence. You need to make sure that everybody fits onto the stage and you hit the right lighting marks and all that sort of stuff, so it’s a difficult scene to direct. But when it works and when everyone’s working together, it’s just incredible to watch.
