Effect of salicylic acid and water stress on percent of protein, harvest index and biological yield in mung bean

Abstract Mungbean is a warm season crop requiring 90–120 days of frost free conditions from planting to maturity. Adequate rainfall is required from flowering to late pod filling in order to ensure good yield. Salicylic acid (SA), a plant phenol is now considered as a hormone-like endogenous regulator, has defense mechanism against biotic and abiotic stresses. The experiment was conducted in 2013 at the Research Station tropical fruits and natural resources in bahukalat. The field experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with split plot design with three replications. Treatments included irrigation as a major factor in three levels included (Full irrigation, Irrigation cut at flowering time, Irrigation cut at pod time) and salicylic acid concentrations in four levels included (0, 900, 1800, 2700 Micromolar) before planting the priming was done. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of water stress and salicylic acid on all characteristic was significant.

Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

Am<strong>on</strong>g the pulse crops, Mung<strong>bean</strong> has a special<br />

importance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>in</strong>tensive crop producti<strong>on</strong> due to its<br />

short growth period (Ahmed et al., 1978). Climatic<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> western Uttar Pradesh is suitable for<br />

Mung<strong>bean</strong> cultivati<strong>on</strong> throughout the year (Ali <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Kumar, 2004). The major legumes <strong>in</strong> Asia are<br />

chickpea, (Cicer ariet<strong>in</strong>um L), pige<strong>on</strong>pea (Cajanus<br />

cajan L), <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mung<strong>bean</strong> (Vigna radiata). Mung<strong>bean</strong><br />

is a warm seas<strong>on</strong> crop requir<strong>in</strong>g 90–120 days <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> frost<br />

free c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s from plant<strong>in</strong>g to maturity. Adequate<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>fall is required from flower<strong>in</strong>g to late pod fill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

order to ensure good <strong>yield</strong>. Drought problems for<br />

Mung <strong>bean</strong>s are worsen<strong>in</strong>g with the rapid expansi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>stress</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the world <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 3 billi<strong>on</strong><br />

people by 2030 (Postel, 2000). Crop <strong>yield</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mung<br />

<strong>bean</strong> is more dependent <strong>on</strong> an adequate supply <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g> than <strong>on</strong> any other s<strong>in</strong>gle envir<strong>on</strong>mental factor<br />

(Kramer <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Boyer 1997). Drought is a polygenic<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>stress</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> is c<strong>on</strong>sidered as <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the most important<br />

factors limit<strong>in</strong>g crop <strong>yield</strong>s around the world. Water is<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> factor limit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>yield</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> the arid<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> semiarid regi<strong>on</strong>s. When <str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g> resources are a<br />

factor limit<strong>in</strong>g the producti<strong>on</strong>, irrigati<strong>on</strong><br />

programm<strong>in</strong>g is essential <strong>in</strong> order to maximize<br />

producti<strong>on</strong> per m3 irrigati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g> (Doorenbos <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Kassam, 1979). Deficit irrigati<strong>on</strong> is <strong>on</strong>e way <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

maximiz<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g> use efficiency (Bekele <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tilahun<br />

2007). However, drought <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> sal<strong>in</strong>ity are the most<br />

serious threats to agriculture <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> are far more<br />

important globally (Altman, 2003), <str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>stress</str<strong>on</strong>g> is<br />

major harmful factor <strong>in</strong> arid <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> semi-arid regi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

worldwide (Ranjana et al., 2006) that limits the area<br />

under cultivati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>yield</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> crops. Drought is<br />

observed <strong>in</strong> irrigated areas due to <strong>in</strong>sufficient supply<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> canal closure (Hafeez et al., 2003).<br />

Water deficit/drought affects every aspect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant<br />

growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <strong>yield</strong> modify<strong>in</strong>g the anatomy,<br />

morphology, physiology, biochemistry <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> f<strong>in</strong>ally the<br />

productivity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> crop (J<strong>on</strong>es et al., 2003; Hafiz et al.,<br />

2004). Development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cultivars with high <strong>yield</strong> is the<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> goal <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g> limited envir<strong>on</strong>ments but success<br />

has been modest due to the vary<strong>in</strong>g nature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> drought<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the complexity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> genetic c<strong>on</strong>trol <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>ses (Sadiq, 1994). Salicylic <str<strong>on</strong>g>acid</str<strong>on</strong>g> (SA), a plant<br />

phenol is now c<strong>on</strong>sidered as a horm<strong>on</strong>e-like<br />

endogenous regulator, has defense mechanism<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st biotic <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> abiotic <str<strong>on</strong>g>stress</str<strong>on</strong>g>es (Yalpani et al.,<br />

1994; Szalai et al., 2000). It is known to accumulate<br />

<strong>in</strong> plant’s tissue under the impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sal<strong>in</strong>ity <str<strong>on</strong>g>stress</str<strong>on</strong>g>,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tribut<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>in</strong>crease <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant resistance to<br />

sal<strong>in</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> (D<strong>in</strong>g et al., 2002). L<strong>on</strong>g-term <strong>in</strong>cubati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> tomato plant <strong>in</strong> low c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>salicylic</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>acid</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

enables plant to tolerate salt-<str<strong>on</strong>g>stress</str<strong>on</strong>g> caused by 100 mM<br />

NaCl via accumulati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Na + i<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> leaf tissue <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

treated plant which may functi<strong>on</strong>ed as osmolytes<br />

(Tari et al., 2002). Several studies have dem<strong>on</strong>strated<br />

that exogenous SA applicati<strong>on</strong> enhances plant growth<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> development. Faridudd<strong>in</strong> et al. (2003) showed<br />

that mustard plants sprayed with low c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> SA produced larger amounts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> dry matter <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> had<br />

higher photosynthetic rate <strong>in</strong> comparis<strong>on</strong> with c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

plants. SA applicati<strong>on</strong> to corn <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> soy<strong>bean</strong> promoted<br />

leaf area <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> dry weight <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plants (Khan et al. 2003).<br />

Motivati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> aims <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the study were effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Locati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> experiment<br />

The experiment was c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> 2013 at the<br />

Research Stati<strong>on</strong> tropical fruits <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural resources<br />

<strong>in</strong> bahukalat (In Iran) which is situated between 25°<br />

North latitude <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 37° East l<strong>on</strong>gitude <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> at an<br />

altitude <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 85m above mean Sea Level.<br />

Composite soil sampl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The soil <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the experimental site bel<strong>on</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g loam.<br />

Composite soil sampl<strong>in</strong>g was made <strong>in</strong> the<br />

experimental area before the impositi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> treatments<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> was analyzed for physical <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> chemical<br />

characteristics.<br />

Data collect<br />

Data collected were subjected to statistical analysis by<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g a computer program MSTATC. Least<br />

Significant Difference test (LSD) at 5 % probability<br />

level was applied to compare the differences am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

treatments` means.<br />

Results <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> discussi<strong>on</strong><br />

Thous<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gra<strong>in</strong> weight<br />

Analysis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> variance showed that the effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>water</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>stress</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> thous<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gra<strong>in</strong> weight was significant<br />

(Table 1). The maximum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> thous<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gra<strong>in</strong> weight<br />

(47.81) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> treatments Full irrigati<strong>on</strong> was obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

(Table 2). Analysis <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> variance showed that the effect<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Salicylic <str<strong>on</strong>g>acid</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> thous<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gra<strong>in</strong> weight was<br />

significant (Table 1). The maximum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> thous<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> gra<strong>in</strong><br />

weight (50.79) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> treatments 2700 Mm <str<strong>on</strong>g>salicylic</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>acid</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

was obta<strong>in</strong>ed (Table 2).<br />
