On30thSeptember20<strong>17</strong>,theDepartmentofPrimaryCareMedicinecelebratedits30thyear<br />
ofestablishmentwithananniversarydinner.Itwasanighttocelebratethreedecadesofcaringfor<br />
patients,trainingfuturedoctorsandspecialistsinprimarycareaswelasachievingresearch<br />
milestones.Itwasacelebrationofcare,friendshipandprogress.<br />
Goingbackinhistory,theDepartmentofPrimaryCareMedicinewasestablishedinFebruary<br />
1987,drivenbytheneedforageneralclinictocatertothegrowingpatientpopulationinthehospital.<br />
ThishistoricprogresswasmadeunderthedeanshipofProfessorDato’Dr.AnuarZainiMdZain,<br />
withenormoussupportfrom theUniversityHospitalmanagement.YangAmatBerbahagiaTohPuan<br />
Dato’SeriHajahDrAishahOngwastheChairmanthen,whileDato’Dr.GurmukhSinghand<br />
BrigadierGeneralDatukDrSamsudinHussainweretheHospitalDirectorspriorandduringthe<br />
Department’sestablishment.Initialy,thedepartmentwasknownastheDepartmentofPrimary<br />
MedicalCarebutthiswaslaterchangedtoitspresentnametobeterreflectthediscipline.<br />
Attitsinception,therewereonlythreeacademicstafmembers,namelyDr.TanHengSoon,<br />
whowasthefirstHeadofDepartment,DrChiaYookChinandDr.RobinTeoh.TheDepartment<br />
providedclinicalservicestopatientsandteachingsessionstothemedicalstudentsoftheFacultyof<br />
Medicine.Theoficewasthenlocatedonthe10thfloorwhiletheclinicalservicesoperatedfrom the<br />
Clinic‘C’onthefirstfloorofthemaintowerblock.Twodistinctclinicswereestablished,whichwere<br />
thePrimaryCareClinic(RawatanUtamaKlinikAm,alsofondlyknownasRUKA)andtheFamily<br />
PracticeClinic(RawatanUtamaKlinikKeluargaorRUKK).RUKAprovidedshort-term diagnostic<br />
andcurativeservicesforwalk-inadultandpaediatricpatientswhiletheFamilyPracticeClinic<br />
providedlongterm care.Fiveyearslater,athree-storybuildingdedicatedtoPrimaryCarewas<br />
oficialyopenedtoaccommodatethedepartment’sgrowingactivities.Itislocated<br />
