PHU QUOC
Right
Breath-taking view
from a balcony of
JW Marriott Phu
Quoc Emerald Bay
Bottom to Right
The largest
Buddhist temple
in Phu Quoc and
a meditative place
to see a sunset.
Stroll through the
night market for
fresh seafood
made to order.
Ideal for sunset
viewing is Choun
Choun Sky Bar.
Phu Quoc Prison,
also called the
Coconut Tree Prison,
used to house
prisoners of war.
a ‘baby’ wine to one with a robust
and mature body - are fragrant and
cheerful for drinking.
The Fisherman’s village of Ham
Nihn is dotted with floating seafood
restaurants for your choosing. Green
chilli sauces are meant only for the
squid dishes; while lime, salt and
pepper are the condiments mixture
for all others. The Night Market in
Duong Dong is known for pricey
seafood, but serves as a good place
for tourists to wander. Drop by the
nearby Ra Qhoi or 343 Restaurant
for local munches, but for the treat
of large seafood bowls Westernstyle,
head to Crab House. When
the weather permits, Choun Choun
Sky Bar overlooking the riversplit
and Duong Dong tributary
is an excellent choice for sunsets.
Another viewing is the Q Sky Bar
on Tran Hung Dao Street. Café
Sua Da next to the night market
will get you a cooling drink or
two, while Aroi Café opposite of
Crab House offers equally thirstquenching
options.
For more hilltop sea views
dotted with sights of gorgeous
bonsai varieties, head to the newlybuilt
Ho Quoc Pagoda that boasts
Mahayana Buddhist architecture and
beautifully adorned with exquisite
potted plants.
For a history stop, Phu Quoc
Prison tells the story of Phu Quoc’s
tragic past. Built in 1949-1950
and renovated into a museum,
showcased are prisoner cages
and torture practises during the
Indochina War when Phu Quoc
became a P.O.W camp and detention
of captured Viet Cong and North
Vietnamese. A new jail museum is
being built to house these unsettling
exhibits with the government
determined to “promote” this
disturbing story of this island’s past.
STAY:
JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald
Bay opened about a year ago in
the southern hub of An Thoi and
immediately became the talk of
the island. Designed by prolific
hotel designer Bill Bensley - the
resort’s design creation is based
on a fantasy tale that borrows
from Vietnam’s episode of
French colonisation and warweary
history. While fictitious
yet convincing, the resulting
story is that the property was
built out of a deserted and
ancient building – and converted
into the structurally elaborate
‘Lamarck University’ in the
1920s. Thus the modern-day
resort rises up from a madeup
past. Rich in historical
details, the resort is the place
where you will spend your
time browsing through their
eclectic antique collection and
enjoying the exuberant feel of
the lobby. Guestrooms have
high ceilings and universitythemed
department names.
Their beautiful ‘Spa Chanterelle’
provides a luxurious and
relaxing escape. It’s a great
choice for foodies too – with
excellent comestibles, especially
their mega-breakfast buffet with
fabulous vegetarian choices, a
delicious lunch consisting of
Vietnamese traditional dishes,
and beachfront seafood dinners.
