NEW MEMBERS FOR ‘VITAL’ 

SCHEME WHICH HELPS PEOPLE LIVE 

INDEPENDENTLY 

A scheme which provides assistance to 

help vulnerable people live independently 

has welcomed its latest recruits. 

Support With Confidence supports people 

to choose a personal assistant or care and 

support provider who has been vetted and 

approved for quality, safety and training 

to ensure they provide a professional and 

trustworthy service. 

The East Sussex County Council-run 

scheme, boasts 157 accredited members 

across the county. 

Cllr Bill Bentley, lead member for adult 

social care, said: “Personal assistants and 

other support providers play a hugely 

important role in helping people live 

independent lives. 

“It’s vital that people have complete 

trust and confidence in someone who is 

working with them in their own homes and 

as they go about their day-to-day lives. 

“The real benefit of the scheme is the 

peace of mind it gives to service users 

and their families who can be sure they’re 

employing an approved provider who is 

able to give the highest quality service. 

“People know they’ll be getting a provider 

who has been thoroughly checked and 

vetted, who is trustworthy and who will do 

the job professionally and responsibly. 

A total of 31 new providers have joined 

the scheme in the past year, including 

24 personal assistants, who may support 

people at home with household duties, 

cooking and personal care, as well as 

accompanying them to travel, visit family 

or attend social events. 

Other new recruits to Support With 

Confidence include providers of home 

care, community support services, day 

services for people with dementia, mental 

health outreach services and independent 

financial advisers. 

Jane Routledge, from Eastbourne, became 

a self-employed personal assistant after 

spells working in the property sector and 

as a care worker. 

She said: “I provide companionship to 

people, chaperone them and carry out 

light errands such as shopping but can 

also help them with travelling to see 

relatives – I can assist them in any way 

they need. 

“I like working with the elderly because I 

think you can learn from them, and the 

good thing about the service I provide 

is they get to know you and they know 

they’re going to see a familiar face. 

“If you’re employing someone to work for 

you, you have to feel confident in them 

and the great thing about this scheme is it 

gives people that peace of mind.” 

CQC GIVES MEADS TOP MARKS 

The Care Quality Commission’s report 

on its inspection of the Meads Medical 

Centre rates the practice ‘good’ in every 

category. Noting that it found significant 

improvements had been made, it also 

described it as being safe, effective, caring, 

responsive and well led. 

The CQC carry out regular checks on 

health and social care services, including 

GP practices. During its inspection at 

The Meads, the CQC also had in-depth 

discussions with members of its Patient 

Participation Group to obtain first hand 

feedback from the patients perspective. 

The chairman of the Meads Patients 

Group, Trevor Nash, said: “It is extremely 

gratifying to see how the practice has 

improved. You only have to walk into the 

waiting room to see how everything has 

changed and much of our success is due 

to our practice manager who joined us just 

a year ago. 

“The doctors and staff work very hard to 

give our patients the best service possible 

and I am delighted that this has been 

reflected in the inspection findings. The 

Patients Group welcomes ideas and 

suggestions from patients which we can 

then discuss with the practice staff at one 

of our regular meetings with them.”

NEW COMPUTERS BOOST FOR LIBRARIES’ NETWORK 

People in East Sussex are being helped 

to help themselves to employment 

opportunities – thanks to a half a million 

pound upgrade of library computers. 

New computer terminals have been 

installed at all of the county’s 24 libraries 

in a nine-month scheme to improve East 

Sussex County Council’s network of freeto-access 

PCs. 

The network allows people to access the 

internet, use email and carry out tasks 

such as searching for and applying for 

jobs, printing CVs and job applications and 

looking up a wide range of information on 

subjects from family history to healthcare 

and benefits. 

Among those benefitting from the 

£477,000 upgrade are users of the IT 

For You scheme, which offers advice and 

support on using IT to prepare a CV and 

apply for jobs. 

People can use library computers to 

access the internet for free, and also 

benefit from free access to subscription 

websites such as the Encyclopaedia 

Britannica and Ancestry. 

Library users can also use the latest 

versions of popular programs to create 

and edit Word documents, spreadsheets, 

presentations, newsletters, photographs 

and graphics. 

IT For You courses run on Mondays at 

Hailsham Library at 2.30pm, Tuesdays at 

Crowborough at 10.30am and Heathfield 

at 2.30pm, Wednesdays at Uckfield at 

10.30am and Fridays at Eastbourne at

Rachel Newton, from Uckfield, wanted to 

learn some basic IT Skills to aid her job 

search, having left a previous role after 

20 years due to relocation. 

She was trained at Uckfield Library by 

volunteer Danny Gallagher, one of two 

former IT professionals who volunteer to 

support IT For You sessions, and learned 

skills including how to use the latest Word 

and Excel packages, giving her the confidence 

to complete an ECDL (European Computer 

Driving Licence) training course. 

She said: “The help and support I was given 

by Danny and the team was amazing. I have 

learnt so much in a short space of time and 

my confidence has gone up immensely. 

“I have certainly benefitted hugely from the 

course and I could see that others were 

making good progress too. 

“I think it’s invaluable as a means to get 

people moving forward, to develop and 

learn some transferable IT skills or to update 

existing ones in order to keep up, basically.” 

Danny Gallagher, from Framfield, said: 

“The IT For You programme provides a 

much-needed service for the community and 

is targeted at the practical needs of a diverse 

range of individuals, from those seeking 

employment opportunities to retirees. 

“The training is tailored to address the 

specific needs of each individual who takes 

part. It’s great to see people using the IT 

skills they have acquired in pursuing new job 

opportunities or resuming careers that may 

have been disrupted. 

“I find it personally and emotionally 

rewarding to be in a situation where I 

can pass on some of my IT knowledge to 

individuals in the community who may 

benefit from them.”

BRIGHTER UCKFIELD 

As a new year begins, we look back at a successful 2016 and are very grateful for the support we 

have had from local organisations and businesses. 

• McDonald’s staff, Rotary members, Uckfield Town 

Council groundsmen, Lime Aid volunteers and local 

Scouts have joined us in some of our clearing up 

projects. 

• We have worked with residents of Manor Park and 

Hempstead Fields, Church Combe, Cedar Close and 

Mount Pleasant to improve their areas. 

• We’ve had money donated by Uckfield Carnival and 

Bonfire Society and Josefina. Rubbish sacks at cost 

from Allsorts, a planter donated by Uckfield Singers, 

a wooden bench donated by the Highlands Inn and 

Surfacing Work done by C J Thornes and Addagrip. 

• We also thank all those unsung individuals who 

pick up litter as they go about their daily business, 

whilst walking to the shop for their daily newspaper, 

in their own street whilst putting their dustbin 

away or wherever else they see litter. A litter free 

environment encourages people to place their litter 

in a bin or to take it home with them. 

• Volunteers cleared approximately 20 bags of 

leaves from Belmont Lane, as this area can become 

treacherous if leaves are left to rot on the ground. 

So, now we look forward to 2017. We are a growing 

band of volunteers working with local organisations and 

businesses to keep our town clean, green and litter-free.

MEADS PATIENTS RAISE OVER £600 FOR CHARITY 

Over £600 was raised for charity at the Meads surgery after just 

three coffee and cakes mornings. 

The coffee and cakes events ran alongside the recent Saturday 

morning flu jab sessions held at the practice. 

Generous Meads patients took time to comfort themselves after 

their flu injections by tucking into the very tasty cakes baked by the 

talented Practice staff and members of the Meads Patients Group. 

The patients kindly donated cash to three important charities. 

The charities that will benefit are: Macmillan Nurses, Kent, Sussex 

and Surrey Air Ambulance and the Special Care Baby Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital. 

Trevor Nash, Chairman of the Meads Patients’ Participation group, said, ” It was such a pleasure to meet so many of the 

Meads patients. We were really pleased with their terrific support of these worthwhile causes.”

WHAT THE HECK IS HYGGE?

You’d have had to be pretty well snuggled under a 

mountain of blankets not to have heard about hygge this 

winter. Pronounced ‘hue-gah’, it’s all about creating a sense 

of cosiness, of coming together with friends and family, 

of revelling in simple pleasures. Think warm, fluffy towels, 

roaring fires and flickering candles. Think good, honest, 

home-cooked food, shared with friends. 

Hygge isn’t about buying ‘stuff’, whatever the retailers want 

us to think. You don’t need to spend money to create a 

sense of hygge. Wrapping up in a snuggly jumper and 

going for a walk can be hygge, as can catching up with a 

friend over coffee. It’s about a feeling, not possessions. It’s 

about being kind to yourself, and to others. You could… 

• Curl up in PJs and a snuggly blanket, drink 

hot chocolate and read a book. 

• Light that scented candle you’ve been 

saving. 

• Stop trying to multi-task; turn off your 

phone and focus on the moment. 

• Bake some gooey chocolate chip cookies. 

• Invite a neighbour over for a cuppa. 

• Send a loved one a letter. 

• Soak in a bath with a few drops of aromatherapy 

oils. 

• Explore the great outdoors with your 

family. 

• Turn off your phone.

2017 will be as busy as ever for Uckfield Lions. Our first fundraiser of 

the year is a Pie and Mash evening at the Belmont Centre, 28th January. 

Throughout the year we will be continuing our regular fundraising activities 

such as our annual Lions Day, the Car Rally, a 10km run and of course the Lions Bookshop, open 

Tuesday to Saturday every week, as well as much more. 

We will also be continuing our service activities, such as 

regular afternoon trips out in the minibus for groups of 

people and diabetes testing in Uckfield and Heathfield. 

2017 will also see the Centenary of Lions International. 

For almost 100 years, Lions have been serving their own 

communities and others around the world. To celebrate 

the Centenary, the international Lions community is 

aiming to have served more than a million people by June 

2018. 

All in all, it is going to be a very busy year for us, and we 

hope you will be able to share some part or another of it

It’s time to make and start doing those new year resolutions. For many of us not exercising enough 

is known to be a problem – but what do we do about it? Doing housework, gardening and walking 

all help. How often do most of us take the car in to town when a 15-20 minute walk would do us 

and the atmosphere in Uckfield some good? 

Having a go at something new is also worthwhile. You 

may never have tried that activity or it might have been 

decades ago that you stopped. Neither means you can’t 

have a go. 

What is known to work well is to stick at something. 

Not having one go, but doing it for three or four 

times - even if it’s only weekly - massively increases the 

chance of you carrying on with something. This is true 

about good things like exercise, but also applies with 

giving up smoking, cutting drink and our excess food 

consumption. A little bit extra exercise and a little bit less 

of life’s excesses could well make a great difference IF 

YOU KEEP IT UP. 

A healthy lifestyle is good for us all and I don’t do this 

myself properly so I know we can all do bits to improve 

our life. Isn’t caring for our future worthwhile? Give it a 

try. 

Freedom Leisure will try and do more things if there’s 

demand so give them a ring to see if there’s anything 

you fancy already. There’s room for teenagers with 

parents up to my age for 5-a-side football on Friday 

evenings in Crowborough. Want to try something else – 

let me know and we’ll see if there are others out there 

wanting to do the same as you. 

Rugby, football, tennis, judo/karate and all the other 

things in last months word search are all available in 

Uckfield so we really have little excuse.

Learn something new 

Whether you want to get a qualification so 

you can get a better job, or you just fancy 

trying a new hobby, make 2017 the year you

short online courses. Many are delivered by 

leading UK universities. You could try writing 

fiction, exploring digital technologies, or 

learning about forensic science. If you prefer 

face-to-face tuition, check out the courses 

offered by your local college. You could 

improve your computer skills, take up a new 

craft, or find out how to delve into your family 

history.

help with depression, anxiety, stress and a 

whole lot of other issues. It may even help you 

to live longer. We know the great British weather doesn’t always make it the most tempting prospect. But if the sun 

breaks through the clouds, wrap up warm, pull your wellies on and head for your nearest green space. You’ll likely 

find you feel calmer and happier as a result. 

Take time to cook 

Home cooked meals are usually much better for you than ready meals. They’re higher in vitamins and minerals, and 

lower in salt and sugar. So, try resolving to cook for yourself a few days a week. If you struggle to find the time, you 

could try a box scheme. Simply Cook, for example, post you the herbs, seasonings and recipes to make simple (but 

delicious) meals in around 20 minutes. You just add four to six items of fresh food and follow the instructions. Hello 

Fresh go even further. They send you everything you need to make a meal, including simple-to-follow recipes. 

Appreciate the little things 

We’re often so busy; we don’t get time to really appreciate the little things in life. A soak in the bath, your favourite 

radio programme, a chat with an old friend… Taking a moment to be thankful can make us happier and calmer, and 

improve our relationships. You could try listing three things that you’re grateful for before you go to sleep each night, 

or keeping a daily gratitude journal. Or just try to give thanks to the people you love a bit more often.

UCKFIELD ROTARY 

MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE

First of all, a happy new year to everyone. And as it is the new year, it’s time to launch this year’s 

Making Dreams Come True award. As it has been running since 2009, you probably know how it 

works, but let’s just remind you of the details. 

Each year the Rotary Club offers £1,000 to a local young 

adult aged between 16 and 25, to pursue their dream. 

The award commemorates Daniel Gamble, killed in action 

in 2008, doing something he had wanted to do. We don’t 

specify what you use the money for; over the years it has 

supported activities abroad – a medical placement in 

Africa, spending time in Ethiopia teaching local children, 

taking part in a building project in Cambodia, canoeing in 

Canada, accompanying pilgrims to Lourdes. Others have 

used the award within UK, to fund, for example, advanced 

violin tuition in London, study required for a career in dog 

grooming, photographic equipment required for a course 

of study. Your ‘dream’ doesn’t have to be spectacular, 

involving foreign travel or headline-grabbing activities – it 

just needs to be something you have always wanted to 

do, or perhaps something you need to do to get started 

in a career, or a business, something that £1,000 would 

help you to achieve. 

In the next few days you will see posters around the 

town advertising the award. You will need an application 

form and the information sheet that gives more details 

about the scheme. Just one thing – if you have a form 

or information sheet from a previous year, please don’t 

use that, as we have made some changes to the papers. 

You can get the current details from our website, or via 

our email address, both shown below. Alan Garrood is 

looking after the award again this year within the club, 

so you can get the information from Alan, or see any 

member of the Rotary Club, and they will arrange to get 

the papers to you. 

You will need to get your application to Alan not later 

than Friday 31 March – this can be emailed, posted 

or put through his door. We will then consider all the 

applications and aim to announce a result in the early 

Summer. Once the winner has completed their project, 

we invite him or her to a Rotary meeting to tell us all 

about what they have done. 

So, if you are aged 16-25, live in Uckfield or the 

surrounding villages and have a dream with which we 

might help, why not apply – we look forward to hearing 

from you.

ROCKS PARK SCHOOL DECORATIONS DAY 

ST PHILIP’S SCHOOL CHRISTMAS FAIR 

Rocks Park School held their annual Decorations Day 

on 25 November. The children were joined by parents 

and friends to make decorations ready for Christmas. 

There were snowmen, star shaped photo frames and 

krispie Christmas trees, tables full of chocolate truffles, 

penguins and giant snowflakes. The children were 

looking especially Christmassy in their festive jumpers 

and amazing hats 

Santa’s grotto, edible Christmas goodies, gifts, preloved 

books and toys, festive games, a BBQ and mulled 

wine helped to magically transform St Philip’s Catholic 

Primary School into a fun and festive Christmas fair. The 

Christmas fair raised over £2600. 

RAVE ON AT THE CIVIC CENTRE UCKFIELD 

HOLY CROSS CHURCH CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 

Thousands of people flocked to see over 85 Christmas 

Tree displays at Holy Cross Church Christmas Tree 

Festival, whch was open Friday 2 to Sunday 4 December. 

The outside of the church was floodlit in the evening 

with Christmas colours. Many groups and businesses 

decorated trees in the church, and entertainment was 

provided by singers and musicians. 

The Civic Centre Uckfield rocked to the sound of the 

60’s on Friday 2 December when “Buddy Holly” (Marc 

Robinson), Elvis Presley (Steve Halliday) and Billy Fury 

(Gavin Stanley) took to the stage to recreate the music 

to three kings of rock and roll in front of a sold out 

audience. 

The show had a variety of their classic songs with a mix 

of “Christmas” hits, lasted two hours with a 20 minute 

interval.

BUXTED PARK REINDEER RUN 

LIONS DONATE £1500 TO WEALDEN TALKING NEWS 

Over 120 runners took part in Buxted Park Reindeer 

Run’s most successful event to date. The introduction 

of a 1k race aimed at children proved popular with 

half of the runners choosing this distance. Over £800 

was raised for The Fire Fighters Charity who provide 

rehabilitation and recuperation to ill and injured fire 

service personnel and their families across the U.K. 

UCKFIELD SINGERS CHRISTMAS CONCERT 

Uckfield Lions Club were asked by Wealden Talking 

News for help with a street collection in to raise money. 

Uckfield Lions helped with the street collection, and 

made a donation of £1500 to buy the much needed 

computer and memory stick copying machine. Wealden 

Talking News is delivered to 300 people in the local area

CHRISTMAS LATE NIGHT SHOPPING EVENT 

The Uckfield Singers Community Choir had a sell-out 

concert at the Civic Centre Saturday 3 December with 

lots of great Christmas songs and music. Over £400 

was raised by raffle and donation from the choir, and 

collection buckets – a splendid result for Sussex Air 

Ambulance. 

Friday 2 December saw Uckfield High Street celebrate 

Christmas with all things festive, with the annual Late 

Night Shopping Event in association with Uckfield 

Chamber of Commerce. The weather was fine and chilly 

and many hundreds of residents descended on the High 

Street. 

With shops remaining open until late, stalls selling crafts, 

presents and food up and down the High Street. Live 

music, fire juggling and festive activities for all members 

of the family to get involved in, it was not to be missed! 

Ten local primary schools with up to 300 children took 

part in a live broadcast singing Christmas songs
