NOVA 7's Schedule Summer 2008 For any of you that are interested in playing 7s this summer and want to input on • Captains • The selection process • Possible split of NOVA I and NOVA II • Coaching situation a meeting will be held on Wednesday May 21st at 7pm at Wakefield High School in Arlington in room 10 in the basement. Please enter through door number 8 near the tennis courts (Rookie has mentioned that everyone should only enter in door 8, please!) Address: 4901 S Chesterfield Rd. Formal practices will be on Wednesdays at TC Williams High School in Alexandria, VA. They will run from 7pm until dark starting on May 28 th . Touch 7s will be on Mondays at TC Williams High School in Alexandria, VA. They will run from 7pm until dark starting on June 2 nd . The tournaments in italics haven’t set their dates yet. June 7 th - Lehigh Valley 7s in Bethlehem, PA June 14 th - ?? (15’s ITTs weekend) June 21 st – NOVA 7s in Manassas, VA June 22 nd – MARFU Open Camp in DC Area June 28 th - Harrisburg 7s in Harrisburg, PA June 28 th – PAC 7s in Bowie, MD July 5 th /6 th - Cape Fear 7s in Wilmington, NC July 12 th - Ruggerama 7s at Rosecroft in MD (our tournament) July 19 th - ??? July 19 th – MARFU at Chicago TU Tournament *MARFU SELECT SIDE TEAM July 26 th – MARFU Playoffs August 9 th /10 th - Invitational National Club Championships in San Francisco, CA (?) Meet the NOVA 15s Coaches - Thanks for all your dedication, hard work and support! Real Name: Lee Knight Nickname: None, really Player with funniest nickname? Beef (is it Beef Curtains? that's kinda gross) Player who you have no idea where nickname came from? SAL* Previous Playing and Coaching experience (teams, positions, accomplishments): Playing - teams include MIT Women's Rugby, BASH (Bay Area SheHawks - now defunct I think), New York Rugby Club, NRU, USA Eagles (15s), World Cup 06. Played almost exclusively scrumhalf. Relatively new to coaching - Assistant Coach for NOVA fall 07, spring 08 Favorite food/drink: That Sparks I had in Austin TX after Sweet 16s :) And for food I appreciate a good salad - the kinds with fun cheese, cranberries, nuts, apples, etc. The best thing about NOVA is.... the fact that NOVA made my Dad chug a beer at the Rooster! Favorite rugby moment (playing/ watching): Singing the National Anthem just before playing against Ireland, with a sea of US supporters in the stands all belting out the anthem and wearing the same red "I rugby ball USA" shirts Have you ever had an encounter with a real piranha? If so, please provide details: Is that the same as a caipirinha? If so, I've seen a lot of them... When I'm not coaching, I like to.... build my career coaching business and think of new business ideas Hands off, I have a very significant other named....Rob Sarvis S/he will be at the game on the xx: Not sure, but when he comes he'll be wearing his knife in a phone booth shirt! My birthday is: 3/3/78 and I will be 31 old. If you want to buy me a gift, I would like...any new product from Apple. Something else you should know about me is...my mom's name is Fabiola and she's from Guatemala. For real. Real Name: Brian Walker Nickname: oldest nickname is Crazylegs, but I have been called Dangerous, El Jefe, Walker Texas Ranger, Cannibal Ox, and Homewrecker. Story? No s***, there I was... Player with funniest nickname? "Buttcut" and a kid I will only identify as "H.F." Talk to me privately for an explanation on the latter! Player who you have no idea where nickname came from? None currently, I always ask! Previous Playing and Coaching experience: I started my rugby life as a wing at University of Mary Washington. My only discernable gift at the time was a native ability to run like a scared rabbit when faced by 15 opposition players hellbent on separating me from life, limb, and possession of the game ball. Despite not knowing anything about the rules I somehow managed to (legally) score a try in my debut match. I played B side for about 2 years at every position between 10 and 15 before graduating to flanker. Now my utter inability to wait patiently for the ball to get to me was no longer a liability, but suddenly a bonus. This paradigm shift led me to A side status at 7 and at #8. Happy Days! There was much rejoicing amongst the peasants. College Highlights included VRU and MARFU select matches, and a great team trip to Savannah for St Patrick's Day. After college I eschewed earning money and having a good job for the life of a would-be professional rugby player. [note: See also, gambled and lost] I spent 4 and a half months as a pseudo illegal immigrant in Wales, leaching off my savings and living in absolutely deplorable conditions. My tryout with Pontypool lasted less time than it took you to read this sentence. But the good people in Cardiff at Glamorgan Wanderers took me in and endeavoured (note proper British spelling) to make a real rugby player out of me. I learned more about Crazy! rugby in 4 and a half months than the rest of my life put together and I am forever indebted to them for that. I returned home to Richmond, VA having earned a grand total of about $60US as a professional rugby player. I played club rugby at #7 or #8 for Richmond United for 2 years, and made select side appearances for the VRU and a couple games with MARFU during that time. After a nagging hip injury derailed a planned rugby excursion to New Zealand, I decided to pursue an easier/safer line of professional work as an active duty soldier in the United States Army. [see also, gambled and lost, twice] Military duties/locations (Fairbanks, Alaska) conspired against further playing on my part. So I became an avid spectator (thank you Setanta) and part time strategist, talking rugby with my favorite former teammate and rising star in the coaching world (one Mr. Scott Delaney). When my Army contract ended and I got a job here in VA, he said he had the perfect opportunity for me to start coaching, as he was considering taking the head coaching job at a little ol' club called NOVA. Lucky for me he did, and the rest (as they say) is history. Favorite food/drink: Food is pizza, and beer is Newcastle, although oddly enough I don't like the two together... The best thing about NOVA is.... the dedication and organization of the club, and the true family atmosphere of the players Favorite rugby moment (playing/ watching): Playing-getting a run with the Glamorgan first team in a midweek fixture to earn my first and only money ($60 win bonus) as a "professional" player. Watching wasseeing Australia win the 99 World Cup final first hand at pitch level at Millenium Stadium in Cardiff. Have you ever had an encounter with a real piranha? If so, please provide details: Have you ever played cards with Scott's dad? When I'm not coaching, I like to....work out and study Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Hands off, I have a very significant other named.... I am a free agent.
