PREVIEW HAVANA RumBA!
rumba in the riverside: Dancers from Havana Rumba! in a Cuban street scene
the rumba
rhythms
u Havana rumba! brings
sound of Cuba to riverside
u Show has new music and
dance trends but traditional
styles still have their place
THe Buena Vista Social Club did a lot to
blast the Cuban scene out of Communist
gloom in the 1990s.
despite their massive success and
the resulting boost for tourism, a bit of
a backlash developed, with claims that
the sound was simply a westernised,
old-fashioned version of the Caribbean
island’s culture rather than looking at the
new rhythms.
The fact that one of the band’s original
members, double bass player Orlando
Lopez, died last month, indicates that their
sound – however wonderful and widely
popular – was based in Cuba’s past.
Maybe Havana rumba! will be a
better reflection.
The music and dance show
appearing at riverside Studios from the
end of this month is said to reflect ‘the
past and present of rumba – from the
You
roots in the African fertility dance which
cane plantations to the rumba finding its
way to the shipyards of Havana and
nights in Havana’s streets’.
A young line-up should turn the
spotlight on Cuba’s new generation of
musicians and dancers, while not ignoring
the tradition and history.
Modern salsa and rumba rhythms
dance music genre of reggaeton in a
physically demanding performance.
My luMiNARieS have been on the
fringes of greatness since their
formation in 2004.
Back then, i caught them playing
extremely credible alt rock in a tiny bar
near Scrubs lane.
The band i saw at Bush Hall seemed
a very different animal. Although they
have always shown great technical
ability as a live act, their performance
revealed a band at the top of their game.
From the opening bars of their first
song, The Firemen, it was clear that we
were watching something more than
‘just-another-indie-band’.
James ewers’ lead vocals resonated
through the hall’s lavish interior, piercing
through the band’s soaring instrumentals.
The overall effect was reminiscent
of Jeff Buckley, though the sound was
still very much their own.
The quality of the performance
was maintained as they unveiled what
was essentially a live version of their
forthcoming album. Stylistically, the
songs were impressively varied, with
introspective acoustic numbers sitting
happily alongside more grunge-inspired
offerings. in terms of composition, all
of the songs showcased the heightened
melodic sensitivity that lies at the heart
of their appeal.
As well as providing rock-solid bass
and lead guitars, identical twins dylan
and Saul perryman contributed evocative
vocal harmonies to some of the
folkier numbers. Sam Stopford, on
drums, exhibited that rare combination
of ability and showmanship without at
any point becoming showy.
stand alone: M Ward was better on solo tracks
revieW
m WArd
IT WAS with hushed tones that M Ward fans
eagerly snapped up tickets to his hastily
announced Bush Hall gig in late February.
Mosey on down to the bar and you were
as likely to find hardcore M Ward fans from
Brighton or further afield as you were to find
his Shepherds Bush brethren.
After all, the Oregon-based musician was
only here in London for a rare two-night stand.
Keen to show off tracks from his stellar new
album Hold Time (4AD), Matt and his ragtag
band launched right in with the new stuff.
Rave On and Fisher of Men were quickly
dispatched, while the boys on stage dropped
out or switched between instruments.
But what works so well on disc was
strangely unsuccessful on stage, with the
singer’s smoky, ethereal voice swamped in a
sea of noise and feedback.
Only when Ward was left on stage by
himself did we glimpse a bit of the ole’
Matt magic as he displayed his impeccable,
skillful guitar playing and his nostalgic take
on countrified blues.
Alone, his unusual singing voice – part
lilt and all heart – was clear to hear. But
when his ill-shaven boys returned, they
reverted to their barnstorming ways
and had to settle for a hoedown with
far more simple aims.
It’s hard not to feel a bit
disappointed. What drove the eager
masses to sell out the Uxbridge
Road venue was a chance to hear
the revered singer play his quiet
brand of lyric folk – and what we
got was a deep-fried version of Roll
u The raw materials are right on the
doorstep, as Caroline Butcher reports
It’s taken over a century, but
one of Hammersmith’s hidden
treasures is finally coming out of
the woodwork.
Timber merchant Moss & Co, tucked
away in Dimes Place just off King Street
since 1885, has opened a public gallery
celebrating the beauty and creative
potential of wood.
Local sculptor Elona Bennett is the
first artist to be featured in the new space
with her exhibition of wood carvings,
On Being, unveiled on February 26.
Elona, 62, who lived in Curwen
Road, Shepherds Bush, for 28 years
before moving to Chiswick in 2006, is
presenting 11 carved pieces inspired by
women and nature for the display.
She works mainly with fruit woods
such as lime, cherry and pear, and
says she has been hooked on its grain
and texture for more than 40 years.
“I love the live beauty and warmth
of wood and the surprises you get
while you’re carving it,” she said.
“You take the grain of the wood
for granted but as you’re working
with it you find that it takes on its
own form.
“The fact that the wood was once
alive means it has a certain power
about it.”
Elona is a fellow of the Royal
British Society of Sculptors and
has completed several high-profile
commissions, including a carving
of health workers’ hands for St
George’s Hospital in south London.
Her exhibition at the Moss & Co gallery
runs until March 28.
During that time, she will present
special woodcarving demonstrations
on-site each Tuesday and Wednesday
from noon-5.30pm, Thursdays from
10.30am-5.30pm, and Saturdays from
9am-11.30am.
The fledgling display space was the
brainwave of Prinul Patel, whose father,
Rasik, is one of five brothers who own
the timber business.
Prinul, 28, is a keen artist himself,
having studied fine art at St Martin’s
College, specialising in painting and
print making.
He said the gallery was part of a
wider plan for the business to get more
involved with the local community.
“I love this site, but it is very tucked
away. We get people coming in saying,
‘We have lived here 20 years and didn’t
know you existed’,” he said.
“We want to get more involved in
the community, let people know we are
here and give them a reason to come
down here.
“I’m also an artist myself and I
know how hard it is to get a decent
space to show your work. I wanted
to make another space available for
local people.”
Artists, carpenters, builders, architects
and antique restorers all rely on Moss
& Co as a specialist importer of a wide
range of timbers from sources around
the world.
SpONge WHO cOuld fly! A NeW muSicAl
brought to life: SpongeBob SquarePants and friends in the stage version
show fails
I CAME to see the show
intrigued at how such an
anarchic, surreal and offthe-wall
animated cartoon
could transfer to the stage.
I brought with me an
open mind and a nine-yearold
daughter for back-up.
I, like many millions of
others, love SpongeBob. I
love the series and I loved
the movie. So the musical –
what’s not to like?
Well this musical, at the
Apollo in Hammersmith,
is a curate’s egg that has
been scrambled. I can
assure you parts of it are
good but the overall effect
is like SpongeBob’s inflated
squarepants when they are
punctured by the Flying
Dutchman’s cannon – a bit
of a let-down.
To be sure, the puppetry
of the Flying Dutchman
scene complete with mad
nodding skeletons’ heads is
a high point. My daughter’s
sides nearly split when the
The Bossa back in town
THE Bossa Nova sound of Brazil is being
celebrated by a Hammersmith-based
musical group.
It has been just over 50 years since the style
sprang up and the jazz choir of the Addison
Group of Singers is aiming to reflect its upbeat
nature at its spring concert on March 29.
Expect songs such as Once I Loved and No
More Blues, written by Antono Carlos Jobim,
the ‘father’ of the Bossa Nova style. There
will be some old favourites such as Blue Skies
and What a Wonderful World, alongside some
scary Dutchman ordered
Spongebob to clean the
pigeon poop from his crow’s
nest. But moments like
these were too rare in the
show’s two hours.
Then the show isn’t quite
sure what it wants to be.
It is part musical and part
panto. Its cast (I counted a
multi-tasking complement
of 10) act, sing and dance
with brio. But in between
the good numbers – Kerrching!
In the Krusty Krab and
a very good pastiche of a
Jan and Dean surf song –
there are limited thrills and
few laughs. The audience
was willing the show to fly
but there was not enough
lift in the wings.
Admittedly it took me a
while to get used to Sponge-
Bob made flesh. I mean
the most famous kitchen
sponge in the world surely
doesn’t have a head. And
where are his goofy front
teeth? Squidward Tentacles,
the doom-mongering foil
to SpongeBob’s optimism,
was played in an irritatingly
camp way, and Sandy
Cheeks had swapped diving
suit for bathing suit. I’m all
for change but…
When you have a series
that can suspend disbelief
so as to allow crustaceans
to drink and bathe at the
bottom of the ocean and
make you laugh and be
charmed all at the same
time, and when you have
a series that can count
among its musical contributors
Wilco, The Flaming Lips
and The Shins, then you
have a lot to live up to.
This musical version may
have legs but as yet it only
has appeal for the younger
end of its audience. It was
an OK night out. My daughter
said it was all right. I
left slightly dismayed that I
still didn’t believe sponges
could fly.
Sarah’s new studio space, ‘38’, at
The duo will unveil the show at
a launch party on March 19 and the
exhibition will be open to the public
from March 20-27.
The new studio and gallery space
has been working out of a downstairs
studio, ‘37’, at the same centre in
She works mainly in bronze and
has recently begun to specialise in
children’s and babies’ head portraits
after spending the previous 10 years
casting their hands and feet.
She will unveil a set of about
12 bronze head sculptures in the
exhibition, alongside her friend
Natasha’s sketches of older people.
Sarah said: “It’s really interesting
to see the two extremes in different
media. And it will be amazing for
us to see our work up in the new
studio.”
The 35-year-old sculptor lives
in Clapham and enjoys creating
realistic casts of children’s faces and
expressions at different stages in
their development.
“I try to make the portraits very
sensitive and true-to-life – they’re
not abstract but they are quite
contemporary,” she said.
“I really try to capture their
personality. And it makes me much
happier if the child moves around
or makes faces, rather than just
sitting still.”
Sarah stumbled across her
original ‘37’ studio in the Townmead
centre after failing to find anything
quite as good in Clapham, and she
is happy to be extending her use of
the same site.
“I love it here. There are all sorts
of people who work here and it’s an
and pastel styles.
“There are all sorts of
fascinating little hive
“I have a fascination with older
people – their lives are reflected and
written in their faces,” she said.
She spent six months creating
rapid portrait sketches of a group
of poets as they recited their work
at the Torriano Meeting House in
Kentish Town.
“Most of them were single-poem
drawings of about three minutes
but there were also some guest
artists and those drawings took
20 to 30 minutes,” she said.
“These people are used to
expressing their humanity
and there is something
lovely about capturing
this.”
Natasha will present
DANCING has never been more
TV shows have been the driving force
“I love working with children
you can train them to move and
for a professional dancer,” he added.
“The kids love competing and we travel
all over the country to participate in just
He said: “I live with passion and teach
with passion. People want to feel the energy
of ballroom dancing and not just learn in a
boring old-school style.
“Energy and great rapport are my
X-factors. It is a wonderful thing to
introduce people to dance.
“Often it is a first-time thing for our
clients. They start off embarrassed but their
“People come to make new friends
or to enjoy their time by trying a fun
activity with old ones.
“The atmosphere is always lively and
vibrant and dance is a perfect way of
getting rid of the winter blues.”
a new westfield restaurant
Tibits, in the shepherds Bush
It’s the second london
manager lainey Brown, 41,
winter and a recession, but said
once customers tried the range of
foods they were usually hooked.
“even meat-eaters come in
The diverse range of dishes is
all available from a central ‘food
The potato wedges with
sweet paprika, creamy potato
gratin and beer-battered
accompaniments.
Tibits’ huge range of fresh
salads were also very tempting,
and even as a meat-lover I was
particularly impressed with
the bean salad, incorporating
green beans, walnuts, garlic,
coriander and balsamic vinegar,
The Indian chickpea salad
was also excellent, marrying
chickpeas, carrot, mayonnaise,
For something a little bit
different I also enjoyed the
quinoa salad, combining the
among the dessert options I
indulged in fresh fruit salad and
a more substantial mixture of
I was also very impressed
with Tibits’ selection of
fruit juices, which are all
freshly-squeezed on-site
throughout the day. The
apple, carrot and ginger
blend was particularly
good and the apple, fennel
and lemon juice was very
refreshing.
The only thing I didn’t love
about Tibits was its choice of
music. I sat, perplexed, through
tracks by dire straits and the
Beach Boys, which seemed
rather incongruous with the
restaurant’s sophisticated
décor and, I would imagine,
its target market of young,
health-conscious
professionals.
But soundtracks aside, I left
the eatery feeling enlightened
as to just how delicious – and
filling – vegetarian cuisine can
really be. Caroline Butcher
won Roberts an Oscar. However,
after marrying in 2002, she had
confined herself to supporting roles
and raising three children.
Duplicity is one of a number of
movies that seem to reflect the
straitened financial times and a
deep well of anger at the big
businesses and banks that ordinary
people blame for the recession.
Despite the undercurrent of
financial gloom, it has a light tone
and it manages to keeps the viewer
wondering how the story is going to
develop throughout.
The movie also offers some good,
clean, sexy fun with witty banter
and exotic locations – and it is a
pleasure to see the return of a seriously
talented actress in the shape
of Roberts. Sam Fletcher
