“It caught their attention,”
Gove said.
The staff for the show followed
up with surveys and phone
calls to Amesbury, gaining
information and answering the
question: Why should Amesbury
be the winner this year?
Those who nominated
Amesbury suggested the show
could help Amesbury become
a more walkable city. Located
near major interstate highways,
Amesbury is highly accessible to
a large population, but is not a
tourist destination, city leaders
told the show.
They would also like help in
promoting the city as both a retail
and manufacturing community.
Mayor Ken Gray is backing
the campaign. In an email,
the mayor wrote: “Downtown
Amesbury is the heart of our city
and in many ways reflective of
our identity as a community. The
growth of our downtown, fueled
by committed small business
owners and the overwhelming
support and patronage of the
community, remains critical to
Amesbury’s overall success.”
Continued from page 1
is among their top priorities.
Massachusetts Attorney
General Maura Healy was joined
by local district attorneys and
police chiefs in opposition. “In
the aftermath of so many mass
shootings, it would be tragic
for this (legislation) to become
the next deadly loophole in
our nation’s gun laws. This
legislation is dangerous for the
state of Massachusetts, our law
enforcement officers and our
residents. We are disappointed
in the House for passing this
reckless legislation, and we urge
the (U.S.) Senate to respect state
laws, to protect the safety of
communities and to reject this
bill.”
Healy is one of 17 attorney
‘We’re Going to Win’
He noted that the Retailers
Association of Massachusetts
selected a downtown Amesbury
business as the Rookie of the
Year award winner in 2017. That
selection, he wrote, “further
solidified downtown Amesbury
as a model downtown in the
region.”
Being the winner of the
Small Business Revolution
– Main Street, he wrote would
help Amesbury by receiving
“invaluable tools and resources
allowing them to aggressively
compete in an increasingly
competitive retail market,
growing our downtown and
strengthening our community.”
In its first two seasons, the
show focused on Wabash,
IN, and Bristol Borough, PA,
two towns more remote than
Amesbury.
Gove is planning a red
carpet reception for the crew
of six or seven production
staff, plus Amanda Brickman,
Deluxe’s Chief Brand and
Communications Officer, who
hosts the show along with
the bill.
The police chief association
meets once a month in rotating
communities, which Cudmore
said “gets us out, engaged.”
He said being a part of the
association is also good for
networking within the county
law enforcement leadership.
“When would I get to sit down
with the chiefs in Swampscott
and Marblehead? We are very
close,” he said.
