Life on the Ledge
The Annual Report
WINTER
2017/18
Greetings from St. Mary Springs Academy,
There is a common fiber that runs through
our Ledger community. From the youngest of students
to those who are eagerly anticipating the next stage of their lives
beyond high school. From the families of the past, to the families of
today who continue to make great sacrifices to ensure their children
are a part of this great school. From the retired staff who passed
along the baton, to the current staff who are tirelessly and selflessly
committed to Catholic education. All of these stakeholders, of yesterday
and today, have something in common: a set of intrinsic values
that bind us together, and define what it means to be a Ledger, a
member of our faith-filled family, and school community.
Earlier this year, we revealed the final component of our mission
and vision exercise, when we revealed our System Core Value
Statements, proudly coined “The Ledger Way.” These values define
the unique qualities and principles that our students and community
embody including: Faith, Learning, Leadership, Respect,
Responsibility and Community.
These values are not merely words on a page or letters on a
poster; rather, they define and guide our actions and attitudes. They
serve as a promise, as members of a community and world,
as to how we will treat one another. They call each of us to be the
best version of ourself and to truly lead a life of servant leadership.
For St. Mary’s Springs Academy, our core values are a way of life
and mirror the values Jesus calls us to uphold.
It is our passion and our promise to instill these values into
today’s youth, who are destined to go on to become leaders of
the community and Church. You’ll find stories throughout this
year’s magazine that showcase these values alive in our alumni,
friends, families, students and staff. Although our physical
structure may look differently than it did years ago, we are all
united by the fiber which define who we are as members of the
St. Mary’s Springs Academy Community. WE ARE LEDGERS!
In Christ,
Core values to learn, live and grow by.
Faith
We live our Catholic faith in
both word and action. We are
disciples of Jesus Christ, called
to be living examples of both
faith and stewardship.
Learning
We are committed to excellence in
education through personal growth
and achivement. We strive to be
inquisitive critical thinkers, problem
solvers, and team players.
Respect
We treat all people with respect
and kindness. We acknowledge
our differences, offering
compassion, empathy and
tolerance.
Responsibility
We lead by example and
are held accountable for
our actions, even when it’s
difficult. We affirm sound
judgement and trustworthy
behavior.
Leadership
We are devoted to a life of
servant leadership, going above
and beyond to serve the school,
parish, community and world.
We are responsible citizens and
Christians committed to living life,
promoting peace, and fostering
social justice.
Community
We foster a welcoming,
supportive, engaging, and
collaborative community that
works in unity to overcome
challenges and differences to
celebrate success. Together we
honor our traditions and work
in partnership to advance our
institution.
Henry the Brave
Henry the Brave
“ And through the grueling months, (they)
did not journey alone.”
Super Heroes! Merchandisers exploit them, filmmakers glorify them,
and children fantasize about them. What sets them apart from mere
mortals is their ability to make an epic journey, confront extraordinary
challenges and hardships, and boldly rise above them, while
reconciling those struggles into positive outcomes.
However, not all heroes are
legends. Some are just ordinary people,
like Henry Guell, whose
courageous battle with
cancer began just before
his second birthday, and
has defined him as the
hero, “Henry the Brave.”
Henry is the son of Tyler
and Lizzi (Hutter) Guell,
both SMSA 2009
graduates, who started
dating their Junior year at Springs. Henry was born
on January 20, 2015, the third generation of Henry
Guells, and so, he is sometimes lovingly called HG3.
On a typical December day in 2016, after a playfilled
day with cousins, Lizzi noticed that Henry
became fussy and clingy. The next day, Henry’s back
was bent slightly and his gait was different; later that
day, he preferred crawling to walking. From Urgent
Care to Milwaukee Children’s Hospital, from routine
blood tests to an MRI and Lumbar Puncture, Henry’s
trials were just beginning. He was diagnosed
with cancer, an Undifferentiated Sarcoma of the
spine. After immediate surgery, Henry began five
months of chemo and radiation therapies. However,
such treatments have side effects, and Henry experienced
many of them which necessitated several
unplanned visits to Children’s Hospital. At the same
time, when he was able, Henry began a course of
Physical and Occupational therapies, while with a
decrease in his appetite, he required a feeding tube.
Through the grueling months, Lizzi describes Henry
as “living life as though nothing was wrong. He kept
playing and laughing through the pain and frustration.
He loves to make us laugh...with his silly antics
and sayings. He is such a smart boy and soaks in
information like a sponge.” She further remarks that
“he is a loving boy. He enjoys cuddling with Mom
and Dad, our two dogs and all of his stuffed animal
friends.”
And through the grueling months, Lizzi, Tyler and
Henry did not journey alone. A community of
family, friends, and kind hearted strangers were
with them.
WINTER 2017/18 • THE LEDGE MAGAZINE
A GoFundMe account, a meal train, letters of encouragement,
and his name on prayer lists throughout
the country were only a few examples of the supportive
initiatives that they experienced. Locally, the
Catholic community which includes the St. Mary’s
Springs’ community was there to support the family.
For example, their parish, Shepherd of the Hills in
Armstrong, which holds a Bunny Brunch fundraising
event at Easter time, donated this year’s proceeds
not only toward Henry’s medical expenses, but also
toward several unfortunate circumstances encountered
by other members of the Guell clan. At
SMSA, the community not only offered prayers, but
conducted a fundraiser for groceries and gas cards.
Many SMSA alumni and members of the Springs’
community also participated in the very heartfelt
family fundraising event that was held in July of
this year when Lizzi’s sister, Kat, hosted an artistic
extravaganza.
Kat (’00) and her husband Roger own globally
recognized K+R Paint and Clay, Inc. in Glassell
Park, Northeast Los Angeles, a community as Kat
remarks “that symbolizes the spirit of the California
lifestyle, inspired by an ocean, beaches, mountains,
and a vibrant city.” Kat, who graduated from
Clemson University with her MFA, met her husband
there while completing her studies. Entrepreneurs,
who strove for eleven years to develop a unique
vision for their artistic expressions, Roger creates
the forms that act as canvases upon which Kat hand
paints the beautiful shapes.
Pat Reiher, now retired after serving for many years
as the SMSA High School art teacher, taught Kat that
“the most important thing for an artist is to just keep
making,” and it was in Pat’s art classes where Kat
nurtured her love for 2-dimensional design.
As Henry’s aunt and godmother, Kat with Roger
“organized a K&R Sale with benefits going to
Henry’s bright future
and asked other
family members to
contribute.” As Lizzi
says, “it was a huge
success, and yet again,
the community surrounding
us stepped
up to show their love
and support.”
Henry was considered
in remission on June 2,
2017 and as his mother
comments “is back
to his happy, silly, sassy
and carefree self. He
is fully walking again
and no longer needs
his feeding tube, although monitoring will continue.”
She also notes that “our commitment to each other
and our faith has grown and deepened. The outpouring
of love from our family, friends, community
and more is beyond measure. … In our darkest
moments, we felt love. In a time when our life was
filled with fear and uncertainty, we knew we were
not alone.”
Lizzi shares a poem written by her sister,
Meg (’04) about their child-hero: “I am
strong. I am tough. I am armed
with love. I FOUGHT! I WON!
I am ‘Henry the Brave’.”
Living the
Ledger Way
Leadership is not unmitigated power. Leadership is not an
elevated position. Leadership is not self-pride. As Theodore Roosevelt
once said, “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much
you care.”
The best leaders lead by action and example. And the
best leaders are servant-leaders who build community
by advocating social justice, by committing to the
intrinsic value of every human being, and by enriching
the lives of others. Eva Graczyk, a 1992 graduate
of SMSA and the daughter of Valerie and Wayne
Graczyk, is the model of servant-leadership.
After graduating from St. Mary’s Springs Academy,
Eva attended UW Madison and graduated with a joint
degree in Women’s Studies and Social Work. She
would later earn a Master Degree at the University
of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. While
at Madison, Eva completed 3,000 hours of clinical
experience at the BriarPatch Youth Services for
run-a-way teens, and it was through that experience
in her life that she decided that she wanted to work
with runaway or throwaway teens.
However, she remembers that “the volunteer
opportunities that were presented were with much
younger children, and I discovered how crucial the
birth 1 CORINTHIANS to three year 12:12 old period was developmentally
and in terms of attachment in a child. Bonding and
attachment are the pre-cursors to empathy, which
in turn leads to ethical behavior in communities
throughout life.” So, Eva would spend seven years
working with early childhood cases in foster care
before redirecting her career to working with homeless
mothers and their young children.
Eventually, she decided to assist the chronically
homeless with severe behavioral health issues
because, as she states, “not many people wanted to
give their services to this population. I believe that all
people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,
regardless of whether or not they ‘look’ deserving.”
Currently, Eva is the Director of Programs for the
Coalition for the Homeless of the Greater Houston
area. With a team of seventeen staff members, she
manages funding competitions in excess of $50
million annually that serve the homeless and sponsor
prevention activities across three counties, including
metropolitan Houston.
Eva poses with her children.
They work with 100+ social service agencies based
in the region, along with public officials, schools, and
non-profits like SEARCH Homeless Services, Catholic
Charities, the Salvation Army and Star of Hope.
As Eva explains, “they promote person-centered,
trauma-informed services without discrimination,
regardless of medication adherence, sobriety, legal
status, family composition, sexual orientation,
gender, gender identity or age.” Since this coordination
of services began in 2011, they have housed more
than 12,000 homeless persons throughout the region.
Eva’s work has been recognized nationally. She
relates how “the Obama administration was deeply
committed to ending youth and young adult homelessness.
To that end, I was honored to participate in
two White House Policy briefings on the topic. Cyndi
Lauper’s non-profit foundation for homeless youth,
The True Colors Fund, was instrumental in making
this happen.” Eva adds that “I am so grateful to have
had the opportunity to lead multiple initiatives in
Houston, TX to train and educate partners in reaching
out to young homeless people in non-judgmental
and welcoming ways.”
Personally, over her years of service to others, Eva
has fostered over 75 children. In 2001, she adopted
two of her foster children, two brothers, who had
repeatedly been returned to her foster care. Today,
she is mother to seven children. For all of her
children, Eva has created routine, safety and
predictability while ensuring them a childhood.
Eva and her family live just outside of Houston and
experienced the full horror of Hurricane Harvey in
late August. As their house was inundated with water,
they were forced to grab some belongings which they
held high above their heads as they trudged through
the rising waters to safety. A normally twenty minute
walk took an hour as they grappled to hold on to each
other through forceful currents. A member of her
Church housed them when they reached dry land.
However, in addition to her role of mother, calming
her children, keeping a light and upbeat mood, while
searching for food, Eva also assumed her professional
role as she worked in the Red Cross shelters trying
to help people find housing and to connect them
to the right resources to move them out of shelters.
This was not a new experience for Eva. She has been
part of the disaster recovery efforts after hurricanes
Katrina, Rita, Ike and Harvey. She remarks that “it is
clearer and clearer to me that natural disasters expose
our greatest failures as a nation. Those who are forgotten
or marginalized in everyday life only get
Back Row, L-R: Roger, Christopher, and Jimarcus
Front: Zeke (held by Eva), Isaac, Maya and her twin
Quincy
further disenfranchised in the chaos of a far-ranging
disaster.”
During this very trying time, Eva remains grateful
for “the blessings of family, friends, community and
networks who have access to resources.” She is also
thankful for her non-impacted peers who were able
to offer aid so that her family could remain independent
of a disaster shelter. She reflects that “my
education has afforded me a job that allowed me to
clear the debris from my house without fear of being
unemployed. We are displaced and facing a long road
to recovery, but we are not without support.”
A true servant leader will awaken others to inequities
in the world and take the necessary steps to correct
them. A true servant leader is a healer of broken
spirits and the emotionally hurt. Eva is a true servant
leader. She admits that her four years of “life on
the Ledge” at SMSA helped her to become a person
with firm convictions and an understanding of social
issues.
She credits some of her beliefs to her theology teacher,
Vicki Clark; to her science teachers John Resop and
Kathy Bachhuber; and to her drama coach, Romaine
Paveglio who helped her to use her voice.
Through her empathy for
others and her service of love,
“Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I may
remember. Involve me and
I learn.” Benjamn Franklin
Exploration, problem solving, discernment,
analysis, discovery and proficiency are terms that
are associated with the learning experience at
SMSA. Throughout their educational experiences,
students are motivated to be fully engaged in
academics as they realize their own potentials.
Animal rescue, exploding volcanoes, diagnosing
illnesses, and controlling flames with sonic
frequencies are just a few of the exciting scientific
learning experiences in which SMSA students have
been engaged this year as part of the STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering & Math) program. While
3rd grade students were constructing simple machines
to solve an animal rescue problem, 6th grade
Earth Science classes built erupting volcanoes.
From collecting their own DNA to identifying specific
diseases, 7th and 8th grade students in Mrs.
Dahlinger’s science classes eagerly anticipate their daily
classroom learning experiences. Every year, as part of
the SMSA STEM Academy, these students are introduced
to engaging and empowering, hands-on science units
engineered by Project Lead the Way. For example, after
taking a week long course during summer school at the
Milwaukee School of Engineering, Mrs. Dahlinger became
a lead teacher in the Medical Detective program.
Progressing through this unit, students explore the
physiology of the human body, as they learn to take their
own vital signs and to understand the fluctuations in the
readings. After this, each student collects his or her own
DNA to view its strands and follows this up by making
an individualized strand necklace. Later, after exploring
all the human senses, they complete a unit on the brain,
forming teams to dissect and label parts of a sheep’s
brain which they had charted out.
Computer visualizations, lab reports, team discussions,
and charts are used as students explore all aspects of the
human body and learn to differentiate between healthy,
human conditions and signs of disease. For instance, in
one lab students form teams for patient assessment.
The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) program at SMSA allows students a variety of experiences.
Pictured below are students following through with guides during Biotech Day. Students were led through five
hours of instruction and lab work by Barbara Bielec from the BioPharmaceutical Technology Center Institute in
Madison.
Each team is assigned a patient who is sick with one of
the following foodborne illnesses: salmonella, e-coli,
listeria, and campylobacter. From patient history to
microscopic organism identification, the team does a
complete analysis for identification of the illness and
offers a treatment plan and a course for prevention.
As a team, students relate their findings to the class
through visual presentations.
Even though high school students continue their studies
at a much higher and accelerated level, they remain
actively engaged in the learning process, as they continue
to explore exciting opportunities for growth in the
understanding of the sciences. In Advanced Biology,
informative field trips, professional guest speakers, and
a formation of partnerships for environmental awareness
are a few of the activities that augment classroom
instruction. In the Spring of this year, students had
the chance to engage in concentrated lab procedures
under the guidance of Barbara Bielec from the BioPharmaceutical
Technology Center Institute in Madison,
and they partnered with the Sisters of St. Agnes in their
2nd annual Earth Fair at which they presented a photo
exhibit highlighting the beauty of the ledge “waking up
in Spring.”
In Physics classes, students work with a partner to
design and construct mousetrap cars. The mousetrap
car project requires students to use engineering skills to
design, test and redesign a mousetrap powered vehicle.
The main goal of the project is to design a vehicle that
converts the stored energy in a mousetrap to kinetic
energy. This kinetic energy is used in three different
races to gain distance, produce the maximum speed and
to climb a ramp.
At the same time, students have the opportunity to
explore avenues of working, learning relationships with
local businesses sponsored by Fond du Lac Works, a division
of the Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce.
One of these is Spark, a Youth Apprenticeship in which
junior and senior students from local high schools spend
part of their day in school and part at a work-site where
they can directly apply their classroom learning to real
job performance.
Simitrio Arellano, a senior at St. Mary’s Springs Academy,
has a STEM Youth Apprenticeship placement with
Manowske Welding that began the Fall of 2016, and after
a year of planning, designing and execution, he created
“The Banshee,” a sonic gas chamber which is composed of
a steel dish and a connecting speaker, a two dimensional
sound wave resonance chamber.
The design of the Banshee allows for gas to be put into
the chamber through the sides, and then lit. The speakers
will then pump out an endless assortment of songs
and frequencies that will create pressure differences, or
heights, in the fire on top of the chamber which has been
punctured with 291 holes. Simitrio went through much
trial and error before he finally succeeded in creating the
Banshee, in which the mesmerizing flames, controlled by
a frequency, remain constant.
To Teach is to
Touch Lives Forever
St. Mary’s Springs Academy depends upon its many leaders to forward its missions and goals. That
leadership is provided in the classroom by many dedicated teachers. It is acknowledged through the
hard work of staff and administration, through the guidance of the Board of Directors, and
through the support offered by our Catholic parishes. And it is supported through
the commitment of the SMSA community and its many volunteers.
Juliet Erickson: Defining
Excellence in Teaching
How does one define a teacher?
Most dictionaries would define
a teacher as one who “shows,
demonstrates or imparts
knowledge.” However, most
students would agree that an
excellent teacher cares that each
of them understands, holds on to,
and applies that knowledge. An
excellent teacher makes learning fun
and exciting. An excellent teacher
is admired and respected by his or
her students, because an excellent
teacher goes beyond teaching to
connect with students, to understand their individual
needs, and to accommodate their differences. And
an excellent teacher is remembered forever by those
students. Juliet Erickson is an excellent teacher who
has completed sixty-one years of teaching in Catholic
schools, thirty-six of those at St. Mary’s Springs Academy.
Innovative, dedicated, resolute, and successful are just
a few of the words that begin to describe Mrs. Juliet
Erickson. Juliet has taught in four states: twelve years at
the elementary level and forty-nine years in secondary
and university academics. Before arriving in Fond du
Lac in 1981, she was principal of a South Chicago parish
high school with 600 students; under her guidance, the
school was known for its solid academics, athletics, and
financial stability. She would bring her vast experience
and expertise to St. Mary’s Springs Academy in 1981
where she has served as Assistant Principal, Head of
the Mathematics Department, Head Class Moderator,
and Moderator of the Math and Chess Clubs, keeping
endless charts of competitions and organizing the road
trips and volunteers to the various meets. She has always
realized that the Math competitions – in which the Math
Club has many times placed 1st and 2nd in the State -
have helped her students to achieve great scores on the
14
WINTER 2017/18 • THE LEDGE MAGAZINE
ACT exam and other college entrance tests. Juliet never
stops thinking about how she can bring new learning
experiences and just fun to all of the Springs’ students
both inside and outside the classroom.
During her tenure at SMSA, Juliet initiated the “Walk-a-
Thon” fundraiser in the early 80’s at the request of Sr.
Rita, bringing in some major “outside” financial assistance
for the school. Another fact of which few are aware, is
that Juliet started the “Honey Pot” fundraisers at sporting
events so that classes could support their various
activities throughout the school year.
Tireless, driven, with a focused attention to excellence
might describe her involvement in the many class events
that she has moderated over the years. And knowing
that the connection to her students never stops at her
classroom door, Juliet was sure to attend at least one
event of every extra-curricular activity every season,
every year. In the classroom, Juliet’s students looked
forward to learning Math. If you observed her classes,
you might see a student cartwheeling across the front of
the room to demonstrate a reflection over the x-axis, or
the whole class doing hand jives as they learn to factor
a cube, or the class working in teams designing board
games to drill factoring. Juliet also used wonderful,
humorous analogies in her instruction to make the
abstract concrete.
For years, her students looked forward to “Pi” day –
also Juliet’s birthday - where they actually enjoy eating
pies, and they will never forget the holidays and her
famous “Bye-Bye Ducky” stories, or Fridays when they
connected to the rhythm of “It’s A Jungle Out There.” All
of her students have been enriched by the value based
education she provided them. Juliet not only teaches her
students excellent math skills, she teaches them how
to be good, decent human beings who know how to
respect and work with each other to accomplish any task
set before them.
Her extraordinary career in the classroom has not
gone unrecognized. Juliet is the recipient of the Kohl’s
Fellowship, the Noon Optimist Teacher of the Year
Award, and the St. John Baptist de la Salle Excellence
in Teaching Award. Having two Master degrees, one in
administration and one in Math from Creighton University
in Omaha, she has spent her teaching career making
learning interesting and fun for her students. Juliet’s
service to others extends also to her local and Church
communities. She is very active in her parish, St. Isidore
the Farmer, where she has served on various parish
committees and taught CCD classes.
Today, Juliet continues to teach Middle School
Mathematics to students at Holyland Catholic School in
Johnsburg. What she will remember most about St. Mary’s
Springs Academy is the pleasure of seeing the academic
and spiritual growth of the students she has taught and
its atmosphere of learning. Recently, she remarked that
“SMSA has produced solid college students for all of the
years I have been here. When former students come back
to visit me, one constant for which they are grateful is that
we have taught them ‘how to study.’ I, also, appreciate the
opportunity to pray openly and daily in my classroom
with my students. It has been interesting to watch my
former students grow into leadership roles, many even
teaching here at SMSA.”
Henry Adams once said that “a good teacher affects
eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” One
can hardly imagine the impact that an excellent teacher
like Juliet Erickson has made on those that she has served
through her sixty-one years as a Catholic educator.
Julie Shively: Middle School
& High School Principal
On July 1, 2017, St. Mary’s
Springs Academy welcomed
Julie Shively as our new
Middle School/High School
Principal. Julie is a graduate
of the United States Air Force
Academy with a Bachelor
of Science Degree, Virginia
Commonwealth University
with a Master of Teaching
Degree, Brenau University with
an Education Specialist Degree/
Middle Grades Math & Science,
Georgia Southern University with a Master of Educational
Leadership, and most recently, Vanderbilt University
with an Education Doctorate in Education Policy. Having
first served as a C-141 Aircraft Pilot in the United States
Air Force for nine years, Julie’s list of achievements are
quite expansive, including being hand selected to fly
sensitive missions into the Soviet Union in support of the
Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
From leading in the Air Force, Julie shifted to leading
in education. She has taught for twenty years at the
elementary, middle and high school levels in many
content areas. During that time, she piloted a program
to teach accelerated math curriculum using distance
learning, developed and led a successful faculty
mentoring program, and she designed and implemented
a “math institute” for veteran teachers to model promising
math practices for newer teachers. Julie was also selected
as one of five teachers in the nation to serve as a Fellow at
the U.S. Department of Education in Washington D.C. for
one year. Here she worked with law makers to highlight
teachers’ roles in education and the need to actively
engage teachers with federal and state education policy
and program development.
That experience convinced Julie to lead teachers through
administration. She followed her heart and the Holy Spirit
which led her to serving as a High School Principal at
Central Catholic High School in Wheeling, West Virginia,
and later, at St. Thomas More Academy in Magnolia,
Delaware. During her years of administrative experience,
she instituted new STEM programming (including Project
Lead the Way), began a data team to evaluate assessment
data to improve instructional practices, established rich
partnerships within the community, established both
a School Advisory Board and Parent Forum, and began
a professional development program for teachers on
the use of technology to differentiate learning in the
classroom.
In addition to her very impressive credentials, Julie brings
a great deal of passion, enthusiasm and compassion
to her work. She is committed to creating a supportive
environment for students, and an open and on-going
dialogue with parents, while reaching out to the
communities that she serves. Julie is not only committed
to her own Catholic faith, but is inspired by the ability to
help form the faith of all children.
We feel very blessed that Julie and her husband Moose
have decided to relocate closer to their “roots”, as Julie
grew up in the Wauwatosa, WI area, and her husband
actively recruited for the USMC in the Midwest. They are
eager to call Fond du Lac and St. Mary’s Springs Academy
their new home.
“ Spending time with the Sisters of
St. Agnes this summer made a
tremendous impact on me. They
challenged me ‘to grow our school so that
we could grow the Church.’ SMSA has such
a strong foundation and active families. It is
a joy for me to fulfill their commission and
the mission of the school.”
participated on a dog sledding field
trip to The Siberian Outpost in Malone.
Students from both schools have been
getting to know each other throughout
the year by sending letters back and forth. The pen pal
project has been celebrated for the last three years with a
dog sledding experience. The Siberian Outpost is owned
by Jim and Judy Feyen, who offer wonderful adventures as
well as a lesson on the original Iditarod Race. The JOOI
Throughout the school year, St. Mary’s Springs students
raise money to sponsor this annual event.
Invest Today.
Inspire Tomorrow.
The St. Mary’s Springs Academy Foundation, has the fiduciary
responsibility for managing the school’s nearly $6 million
endowment. Endowment gifts are some of the most effective
and far-reaching, as they live on in perpetuity and continually
support the students, families and staff of SMSA. Not only do
these funds play a critical role in the financial stability of SMSA,
but they are used to support some of the most important
needs of the institution year after year such as professional
development, tuition assistance and budget relief. The SMSA
Foundation manages three important endowment funds on
behalf of St. Mary’s Springs Academy, including:
Tuition Assistance: This fund supports our efforts to provide
financial aid to families who otherwise might not be able to
afford a Catholic-enriched education. An average of $300,000
is distributed annually to families needing support, making an
education at SMSA accessible for all.
FOUNDATION
Professional Development: This fund supports the
ongoing growth and development of its faculty and staff.
This fund helps support the annual expenses for teachers
to attend workshops/conferences, take part in continuing
education, and develop specialized skills.
System Operations: This fund supports the annual
operations of SMSA, by bridging the gap in tuition/fees
received and the actual cost to operate the System. This
fund is essential in that it supports the financial stability
of the institution, without having to rely solely on tuition
from our families.
here is something about making a gift that you know will continue to have an
T impact on the lives of students and families, long after your lifetime. We ‘planted
the seeds’ of our endowment gift years ago, knowing that it takes a community to
raise our children. It’s our responsibility to ensure that the families of today and
tomorrow are afforded the same opportunity to be a part of this great community.
By creating this fund, we know that the SMSA legacy will live on forever!
LEDGERFEST 2017
On Saturday, April 1st, St. Mary’s Springs
Academy hosted its annual gala event,
Ledgerfest, at the Holiday Inn. The theme this
year was “No foolin’ … it’s Ledgerfest!” The
fun-filled evening included dinner, a live,
silent, and dessert auction, a mystery raffle
and dancing to the music provided by the 5
Card Studs. The proceeds of $103,000 from
this fundraiser help to offset the operational
expenses of the System and are an investment
in the future of Catholic education in the
Fond du Lac community.
Thank You HolyFamily
Thank You Holy Family Parish for your support!
Holy Family Catholic Community recently
presented St. Mary’s Springs Academy with a
check for $100,000 toward the completion of
the St. Mary Our Lady of the Ledge Chapel at
the new K-12 campus on the Ledge. This gift
was given from the proceeds of the recent sale
of St. Mary and St. Joseph Schools.
Holy Family Catholic Community provides St.
Mary’s Springs Academy with a generous annual
donation of $938,000 which supports the
yearly operating expenses. Additionally, Holy
Family's priests preside over our weekly chapel
masses, provide reconciliation on campus, visit
students in the classrooms, and much more.
Pictured for the presentation of the check are, (left to right): Joe
afternoons, and I help plan many
of our campus ministry initiatives. The cross country team has
kept me in shape as I try to keep up with them each fall, and the
drama, music, and athletic departments have kept me cultured
and inspired as I see the incredible talents of the Springs students
come to fruition. The SMSA family is a special one – it’s a
joy to be a part of it. Our Lady of the Ledge, pray for us!”
“One of my favorite parts of
serving as a priest in Fond du Lac
County is getting to serve as chaplain
at St. Mary’s Springs Academy.
I consider myself incredibly
blessed to have a mid-week boost
built right into my schedule as I
come to visit the K-8th graders on
Thursday afternoons (one grade a
week) and to teach in the Sophomores’
Scripture class every Friday.
I am privileged to impart Christ’s
healing power on the students as
I hear their Confessions on Friday
The 2016-2017 year brought about great change and opportunity for St. Mary’s Springs Academy, as it was
our first year in our new consolidated school on the Ledge. The new school presented great financial change
for SMSA as we adjusted to increased operational expenses related to utilities, maintenance, technology
infrastructure, and bolstered student support services. Despite last years adjustments, the financial viability
of SMSA remains strong, steady and the future of SMSA is as promising as ever.
Your support in 2016-2017 helped SMSA...
Invest in new technology
infrastructure, hardware for
classrooms, and online teaching
resources to infuse technology
into the classrooms.
Provide safe transportation
to students living throughout
the Fond du Lac region, as far
as Washington County.
Provide continued access
for families unable to pay
full tuition, keeping our
education affordable.
Grow our Student Services
department to better support
students needing both
enrichment and additional
academic support.
Launch new S.T.E.M.
curriculum; Project Lead
Support the faith life of
our students through
retreats, service projects,
and more.
