IT IS ILLEGAL TO DUMP IN TEXAS
Texas Health and Safety Code Section 365.012 and Texas Water Code Section
7 states it is a criminal offense to illegally to dump waste in Texas. Depending
upon the offense the person(s) can face penalties up to $100,000 and or up
to 5 years in the state jail.
Too many homeowners and lawn crews aren’t aware of the difference between
storm drains and sewers. Sewers carry sewage “black water” that
comes from toilets and other household drains. It is sent, via underground
pipes, to treatment plants. Typically, we don’t see these pipes or openings.
Storm drains lead to a separate pipe system. Openings are visible from
the street. They are designed to route rain runoff into large pipes that lead
directly to major ditches, bayous and other waterways, which ultimately
empty into Galveston Bay. There’s no treatment or filtering of this water
between your yard and the bay.
It is your responsibility to make sure that nothing but untainted rainwater
flows from your yard into storm drains. Lawn clippings, leaves and other
debris often clump, contributing to flooding in your neighborhood. And
that’s only the beginning.
If you’ve used chemicals on your lawn or garden, they may contaminate
the water that runs off from rains or your sprinkler system.
Even nontreated lawn clippings do harm. When they decompose, they
release carbon and nitrogen that feeds undesirable algae, which, in turn,
use up oxygen in the water, contributing to fish kills.
This is not just a matter of civic concern or responsibility. It’s the law:
“Sweeping grass, leaves, grass clippings, yard waste, etc., into a storm drain
is cited as a civil solid-waste violation of State Municipal Solid Waste rules,
Chapter 330.15 (a)(1). Civil penalties are $50 to $25,000 per day per violation.
Criminal penalties, if pursued, are $500 to $100,000 per day per violation.”
TRASH COLLECTION
Regular trash pick-up days are Wednesday and Saturday. Heavy
trash pick-up is also available to residents on Wednesday or
Saturday, but only one of these days per household per week.
Recycle day is every Saturday.
Residents should contact Waste Corporation directly with any
questions.
COMMUNICATIONS
Windstone Colony Community Association, Inc. has another way
to communicate to you. We have setup an email distribution list
to keep you up to date on the latest announcements and meeting
notifications. Don’t worry we will not be sending out emails to
to, then send an email message from the email account you want
to use to: announcements-subscribe@windstonecolony.com
You can remove your email address from the list too, just send
a message to:
announcements-unsubscribe@windstonecolony.com
Once subscribe you will receive an email from the list, with additional
information about subscribing and unsubscribing. You
can ignore that email information. Only the above information
is all you need to know to get this to work.
HOW TO CONTACT OUR MANAGEMENT COMPANY
VanMor Properties, Inc.
8711 Hwy. 6 North, Suite 270 Houston, TX 77095
Phone: 832-593-7300 Fax: 832-593-7301
Email: management@windstonecolony.com
The best option, ecologically speaking, is to re-mow several times so the
clippings will sink down into the lawn and break down quickly, providing
valuable fertilizer. Alternatively, bag lawn clippings, allow them to compost
and then spread them on the lawn. Don’t put these bags out for the trash.
This contributes to landfill problems.
The pipelines that go through our subdivision is also not an approved
solid waste site.
If you send your clippings and other yard wastes off with your yardmen,
please impress on them the importance of not flushing them down the
drain or dumping them in an unapproved waste site.
If you are someone that has dumped your yard waste onto the pipelines
we will give you 30 days to remove this before we report you to the proper
authorities.
If you see someone illegally dumping down the storm drains report it to
the Harris County MUD #284 at 281-240-1988.
If you see someone illegally dumping on the pipelines or anywhere else
report it to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-6000.
The Meaning of
the Martin
Luther King
Holiday
BY CORETTA SCOTT KING
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought
hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught
us through his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity,
humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered
his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love,
forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.
Dr. King knew that it wasn’t enough just to talk the talk, that he had to walk the walk
for his words to be credible. And so we commemorate on this holiday the man of
action, who put his life on the line for freedom and justice every day, the man who
braved threats and jail and beatings and who ultimately paid the highest price to make
democracy a reality for all Americans.
On this day we commemorate Dr. King’s great dream of a vibrant, multiracial nation
united in justice, peace and reconciliation; a nation that has a place at the table for
children of every race and room at the inn for every needy child. It is a day of interracial
and intercultural cooperation and sharing. No other day of the year brings so many
peoples from different cultural backgrounds together in such a vibrant spirit of brother
and sisterhood. Whether you are African-American, Hispanic or Native American,
whether you are Caucasian or Asian-American, you are part of the great dream Martin
Luther King, Jr. had for America. This is not a black holiday; it is a peoples’ holiday.
We commemorate on this holiday the ecumenical leader and visionary who embraced
the unity of all faiths in love and truth. And though we take patriotic pride that Dr.
King was an American, on this holiday we must also commemorate the global leader
who inspired nonviolent liberation movements around the world. Indeed, on this
day, programs commemorating my husband’s birthday are being observed in more
than 100 nations.
The Holiday commemorates America’s pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence - the man
who taught by his example that nonviolent action is the most powerful, revolutionary
force for social change available to oppressed people in their struggles for liberation.
This holiday honors the courage of a man who endured harassment, threats and
beatings and even bombings. We commemorate the man who went to jail 29 times
to achieve freedom for others and who knew he would pay the ultimate price for his
leadership, but kept on marching and protesting and organizing anyway.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and
tribute, but above all a day of service. All across America on the Holiday, his followers
perform service in hospitals and shelters and prisons and wherever people need some
help. It is a day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those
who can’t read, mentoring at-risk youngsters, consoling the broken-hearted and a
thousand other projects for building the beloved community of his dream.
We call you to commemorate this Holiday by making your personal commitment
to serve humanity with the vibrant spirit of unconditional love that was his greatest
strength and which empowered all of the great victories of his leadership. And with
our hearts open to this spirit of unconditional love, we can indeed achieve the Beloved
Community of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream.
WHY YOU SHOULD HOST AN
EXCHANGE STUDENT - YES, YOU!
This time of year, the 100 or so high school exchange student programs in
the U.S. are beginning to seek host families for the coming academic year
for both one semester and full academic year students.
About 28,000 students come to the U.S. each year for youth exchange
programs of varying lengths. Not surprisingly, their motivations vary.
They want to improve their English-speaking skills. They want to establish
their independence from their parents. They want to see the America of
Hollywood and the streets of New York. If they don’t have siblings, they
would like one. They want to share the beauty and complexity of Japanese
or Italian cooking. They want to play American football and be on the
cheerleading team. They want to travel and see new places.
They want to live life as an American teenager.
I think cultural exchanges, including hosting high school exchange students,
offer benefits far beyond being “a good citizen.” Beyond actually
learning about another culture and how things might be done differently
on a daily basis, it challenges one’s assumptions about other cultures,
teaches communication skills and helps develop patience and flexibility.
Few experiences can teach you - and your children - the small but critical
differences between cultures as living with someone from another country.
The benefits to America children - both our own children and others who
are attending school with exchange students - are significant in ways
that are difficult (if not impossible) to quantify. It’s not something adults
often think about. Even school administrators don’t always think through
how exposure to other cultures can benefit students in their districts.
Think about communication for just a moment. Although your children
will, of course, speak English to their exchange student, the potential for
miscommunication is huge when you are talking to non-native English
speakers. The processes of learning how to re-shape your thoughts, speak
more clearly and make sure what you intend to say is what is heard are
important skills. Think about your assumptions about other cultures -
your assumptions and those of your children and their friends, about
another country’s foods, habits or attitudes. Think about relationships
and learning how to adapt, become more cooperative and developing
an ability to be flexible.
You *do* have something to offer.
Many families tell me they can’t host because “we aren’t a good host family.” People
assume they must be outgoing, that they need to be a family that travels a
lot or that they must be a family that goes to museums, events and activities
all the time. People assume that it is critical for a host family to live in a big city
so it will be “fun” for a teen, that it is important to provide a student with his
or her own bedroom or that they must live near the high school. Many people
assume you must have a high school student in your home in order to host a
high school exchange student. The list of “why we’re not a good family” goes
on, but most of these pre-conceptions simply aren’t accurate. Is it nice to travel
with your student? Of course, because it’s fun to share your city, your state or
your country’s beautiful places. But not everyone travels much. Is it nice to live
next to the high school? Of course. But let’s face it, most people don’t. Is it “fun”
for a teen to live in the city? Sure. But nice people who have the desire, capability
and emotional intelligence to be a host family live everywhere.
The truth is, there is no typical American host family, because there is no single
“typical” American family. American host families have teens and don’t have
teens. They have young children and toddlers. They have children who are now
grown and living elsewhere or no children at all. They have dogs or not, large
homes or small ones. Single parents are families, as are grandparents. American
families live in large cities, suburban areas and in small communities. The
students are not here to travel, have a tour guide, just have “fun” or to have an
easy life with a five-minute school commute. They’re here to go to school, learn
about our country, live with a family and to learn what life is like for an American
teen. They can play on the soccer team or have a role in the school play no
matter where they live and no matter what the composition of their host family.
The key to hosting a student is not in who is in your family, but who you are as
people. Good host families are people who want to share their own culture and
community and learn about someone else’s. Good host parents look to give
LA LECHE LEAGUE BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP
La Leche League is an international nonprofit, nonsectarian organization
dedicated to providing education, information, support and
encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. Breastfeeding
is a simple and natural process, but you may need support and
information on the correct positioning of the baby at the breast,
working and breastfeeding, avoiding problems and overcoming
any difficulties that may occur. Knowing other women who have
breastfed their babies can be helpful and reassuring. Having accurate,
up-to-date information is also important. Attending La Leche
League meetings can help you learn about breastfeeding from other
nursing mothers. At these monthly meetings, mothers share not
only their questions and concerns but also the benefits and joys of
breastfeeding. Being in touch with La Leche League can give you
the network of support you need.
There are numerous meeting locations all over the Houston area.
SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Are crows as smart as your 7-year-old? Numerous scientific studies
indicate the answer to that question is yes. In a study done in 2014,
crows were trained to match cards by rewarding them with food
when a correct match was made. Then the experimenters decided
to complicate the test by showing the crows cards that were
noidentical but had the same pattern. The crows were still able to
match them. Then there’s the story of 8-year-old Gabi Mann from
Seattle who began feeding neighborhood crows and in exchange
for food, the birds began to bring her gifts.
Corvids, the family of birds that includes crows, are thought by
many scientists to be among the most intelligent animals on earth.
Here are just a few of the reasons why. Keep in mind these conclusions
are based on scientific tests.
• Crows recognize faces and hold grudges. Just ask someresearchers
in Seattle what happens when you try an experiment on crows
that they don’t like.
• Crows have regional dialects and they communicate with each
other.
• Crows are problem-solvers. A crow unable to crack nuts was observed
putting the nuts on the road and waiting until
cars passed over them.
• Crows use tools. In one experiment, a crow used a wire to
retrieve a stick and then used it to reach some food it wanted. It
was even smart enough to realize it had to bend the
wire first in order to retrieve the stick.
• Crows are caring and nurturing. In 1999, Wallace and Ann Collito
of Massachusetts saw a very small kitten in their yard.
They observed a crow feed the kitten and protect her fromother
animals.
Crows are easily imprinted and when a crow is brought to TWRC
Wildlife Center for rehabilitation, steps are taken to insure this
doesn’t happen. If imprinted, the bird loses it fear of humans and
can’t be released. While rehabilitating, human contact is kept to
a minimum. Sometimes caregivers where masks or refrain from
letting the bird see their face. This will insure a successful release.
HOME FIRES: HOW TO STAY SAFE DURING
COLD WEATHER
It’s that time of year when the cold temperatures settle in and people
turn the heat back on to warm their homes. Heating a home is one
of the leading causes of home fires and the American Red Cross
has steps people can follow to heat their home safely.
ALTERNATE HEAT SOURCES
Almost half of the families in the United States use things like
space heaters, fireplaces, coal or wood stoves to stay warm.
These supplemental heating sources can be dangerous if not used
properly. The Red Cross offers the following safety tips:
1. Never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home.
2. Keep all potential sources of fuel like paper, clothing, bedding,
curtains or rugs at least three feet away from space heaters
and fireplaces.
3. Never leave portable heaters and fireplaces unattended.
4. Turn off space heaters and make sure any embers in the fireplace
are extinguished before going to bed or leaving home.
5. Place space heater on a level, hard and nonflammable surface
(such as ceramic tile floor), not on rugs or carpets or
near bedding or drapes.
6. Keep children and pets away from space heaters.
7. When buying a space heater, look for models that shut off
automatically if the heater falls over as another safety measure.
8. Keep fire in your fireplace by using a glass or metal fire screen
large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs.
9. Have fireplaces, chimneys and furnaces professionally
inspected and cleaned once a year.
10. Other safety steps - Check electrical appliances before you
leave home. Do not leave food cooking on the stove. Blow out
candles before going to bed. Do not overload electrical outlets.
MORE WAYS TO STAY SAFE
Make a fire escape plan and ensure all household members know
two ways to escape from every room of your home. Set up a
Community Newsletter | January 2018
meeting place outside in case of fire. Practice escaping from your
home at least twice a year and at different times of the day. Teach
household members to stop, drop and roll if their clothing should
catch on fire.
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside
bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Check monthly that smoke
alarms are working properly by pushing the test button. Replace
batteries in smoke alarms at least once a year or as directed by
the manufacturer. Replace smoke alarms every ten years.
JANUARY IS
NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH
Blood donors are ordinary people - high school students, factory and
office workers, business executives, parents and grandparents and
people from every walk of life. But they share one thing - a generous
spirit, a desire to give back to their community and help others. Blood
donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern healthcare.
Many lifesaving medical treatments and procedures involve blood
transfusions and would not be possible without a safe and reliable
blood supply.
The Red Cross is also a leader in research and testing to protect the
safety of the blood supply. They were among the first to develop
and implement testing for many infectious diseases including, HIV,
hepatitis B and C viruses, West Nile virus and more recently the agent
of Chagas disease.
If you already donate blood, thank you! You are making a lifesaving
contribution that benefits accident victims, cancer patients, surgical
candidates, children with blood disorders and many others. If you
have never donated blood, please consider doing so. Your donations
are always in constant demand.
National Compliment Day
What a wonderful way to brighten someone’s day or to give credit for
a job well done! Give an extra compliment on National Compliment
Day, which is observed annually on January 24 th .
A compliment has a powerful effect. It can instill confidence in a child
or validate someone’s hard work. A compliment not only improves
the receiver’s mood, but it also says something about the giver. It tells
them you noticed. Whether we recognize someone’s achievement or
their classic style, a compliment can go a long way.
To give a great compliment, first be sincere. People have a way of
knowing when we are fake. If you don’t mean it, it’s worse than getting
a thoughtless birthday gift.
Complimenting character versus a new haircut are different rewards.
The first says you respect the person and the other tells them you paid
attention. Sometimes the receiver needs to hear one or the other or both.
Human beings like to be unique, original. Strive to compliment what
makes a person stand out above the rest. Take the time to reflect on
what you admire about the person.
HOW TO OBSERVE: Make sure to compliment someone and use
#NationalComplimentDay to post on social media.
HISTORY: Kathy Chamberlin of Hopkinton, NH and Debby Hoffman of
Concord, NH created National Compliment Day in 1998.
EASY WAYS TO EAT MORE FRUITS & VEGGIES
The new food plate unveiled by the Department of Agriculture sends a
clear message: eat more fruits and vegetables. Here are easy ways to get
more of these important foods into your diet:
Start early: Get in the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables
a day by eating them early with your morning meal. Add a banana to
your cereal, berries to your yogurt, veggies to your omelet.
Make them visible: Set out a fruit bowl in the kitchen or have carrot
sticks available for snacking. Take some time to prepare the fruits or
vegetables, so they are ready to eat.
Frozen is good: Frozen vegetables, such as peas and carrots, are a great
way to make sure you always have vegetables in the house.
At mealtime, think of the veggies first, not the protein: Half of your plate
needs to be filled with fruits and vegetables. Base your meals on what
vegetables you’ll have and then think of the grains and protein to go
with it.
Have fruit with your sweets: Fruits are nature’s natural candy. Puree
berries and adding them as a sauce to desserts, such as ice cream.
JUST FOR TODAY
By Dear Abby
This is one of the more popular requested columns from the famous advice
columnist Dear Abby. Read on:
“Today is the day we have an opportunity to discard destructive old habits
for healthy new ones and with that in mind, I will share Dear Abby’s
often-requested list of New Year’s Resolutions, which were adapted by my
late mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon:
JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about
yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try
to overcome all of my problems at once. I know that I can do something
for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress
me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with
sunshine.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those
things that I can correct and accept those I cannot.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires
effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be
kind and courteous to those who cross my path and I’ll not speak ill of
others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly and not interrupt when
someone else is talking.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I’m
a smoker, I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully - if only just for
today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even
if it’s only around the block.
JUST FOR TODAY: I will gather the courage to do what is right and take
responsibility for my own actions.
WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS?
A New Year’s resolution is a promise a person makes for the new year.
Regardless of what resolution you commit to, the goal is to improve life in
the coming year.
Resolutions can come in many forms. Some people make a promise to
change a bad habit, such as quitting smoking or eating less junk food.
Other people make a promise to develop a positive habit, such as starting
an exercise program, volunteering in their community or recycling more.
The tradition of New Year’s resolutions dates all the way back to 153 B.C.
January is named after Janus, a mythical god of early Rome.
Janus had two faces - one looking forward, one looking backward. This
allowed him to look back on the past and forward toward the future.
On December 31 st , the Romans imagined Janus looking backward into
the old year and forward into the new year. This became a symbolic time
for Romans to make resolutions for the new year and forgive enemies for
troubles in the past.
The Romans also believed Janus could forgive them for their wrong doings
in the previous year. The Romans would give gifts and make promises,
believing Janus would see this and bless them in the year ahead.
And thus the New Year’s resolution was born!
Focus
Happy New Year
New Year’s Resolutions: Bryan - Lose 15 pounds and become
more active. More walks for the dogs, maybe getting up
earlier to get some exercise in before work. Trying to be
less exhausted after the work day! Closer relationships with
relatives. Boys - Help Maxwell begin to read and help Calvin
to adjust to life at a new school. They both have goals to
become better skateboarders! Anette: Determined to get in
shape this year and is contemplating a vegan-inspired diet.
Ringing in the New Year: “We don’t really do anything at all! Most times, we won’t even make it up to see the ball drop! We usually
try to stay out of the chaos and chill out at home! Would love to see some more snow!”
New Year’s Day Feast: Although this family doesn’t have a traditional meal on New Year’s Day, they have enjoyed a hearty meal of
pork and sauerkraut for a few years but haven’t continued that trend since being in Texas.
New Year, All The Feels: “I think we all appreciate the calendar giving us an opportunity to start over from something if we wish. Of
course we can make resolutions at any time, but when you do it in January, you know that there are tons of other people that are
doing the same thing so you don’t feel so alone. You can choose to fix something, start something new or just strengthen something
about yourself and you have an opportunity for a fresh start simply because of the calendar.”
2017 Reflections: “Probably the importance of family. Both our actual family and our church/neighborhood family. We›ve got family
in Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, Florida and here. The opportunities we get to visit with those families are the best. Whether it is a trip to
Florida or visits from the Ohio and Indiana peoples, those are the times that stand out the most in our minds. We moved to a new
house in 2017 which was a big change for us and the process of selling our house, finding a new one and moving is certainly a
huge event for us from 2017 that we will not forget. The help we received from family and friends during that time was amazing to
us and the ability to provide something better for our kids and our future was a blessing.”
2018 Predictions: “Binge watching Netflix shows will actually become a diagnosed disease recognized by the American Medical
Association. Someone will invent a pair of pants made entirely out of bacon and the Houston Zoo will be closed for a week due to
an unfortunate event involving said pants and a curious badger.”
2018 Plans: With Anette’s entrepreneurial spirit, she is always finding new business opportunities. Although they don’t have anything
specific nailed down, there will surely be plenty of new adventures ahead for this dynamic family. Of course, they might take a trip
or two over to Florida to visit relatives. And how cool is this – the kids would love to start training to be American Ninja Warriors!
Family Roster
Mom: Anette - Licensed Veterinary Technician, pet
sitter and self-taught dog groomer. Loves to watch her
boys play sports and develop into little men, clean the
house and pretty much anything to do with animals.
Dad: Bryan – Works in the County Permits Department.
Enjoys building things, woodworking, aspires to be a
good provider for the family and raise his children to
be respectful, hard-working young men.
Calvin: 7 YO 2 nd grader. Loves to skateboard, play
basketball and soccer. Great at drawing, very
resourceful and creative .
Maxwell: 5 YO preschooler. Very social, loves to
skateboard and swim, play with his friends. Has a great
imagination and loves pretending to destroy things...
sometimes actually destroying them by accident!
Favorite Family Pastimes
Going to the pool, walking to the park and
playground area. Playing outside and working
around the house also keeps this family pleasantly
occupied. Exploring nearby restaurants is another
favorite activity this family enjoys, who are happy
to have a wide array of dining, shopping and
entertainment options close by.
GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack
of water than from lack of food.
• Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering.
• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard
fallen blooms.
• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug
and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum
into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock
phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for
settling before planting.
• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete
fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate,
keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure
tea or blood meal. Water in.
• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw
to prevent freeze damage to crown.
Community Newsletter | January 2018
• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust
off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects.
Reduce water for poinsettias.
• Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture.
• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as
flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature
will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read
and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying.
• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root
cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp
and semi-shaded until rooted.
• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and
shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and
shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers.
Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth
habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant.
• Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the
spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old
beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation
of new beds for roses.
• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant
woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy
will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size
and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf
varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural
needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.
• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with
about 50% humus, including rotted manure.
• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of
tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when
temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles
or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.
January 18 th and running through February 22 nd from 10:30 AM to
THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION
AND OUR CHRISTIAN AMERICAN
HERITAGE CLASS
West Houston Christian Center and Pastors Jack
& Mary Jean Pidgeon, along with Ron & Diane
Geyer, invite you to attend our class on the
United States Constitution and our American
Heritage. This free class will feature videos by
Wallbuilders Founder David Barton as well as
Rick Green, former Texas State Representative
and Wallbuilders Associate Minister. This series
will be an in depth study into the formation of our
Government. We will learn about the Founders
and the Framers who were inspired by God to
build that which was to become the Greatest
Nation on the face of the Earth. We will focus on
the Constitution, as well as many other important
documents and writings, as we discover not
only WHAT was created, but the HOW and WHY
our Nation was built. In the words of our Founding
Father John Jay, the very first Chief Justice
of the Supreme Court… “Every member of the
State ought diligently to READ and to STUDY the
Constitution of the Country and to TEACH the
rising generation to be free. By KNOWING their
rights, they will sooner PERCEIVE when they are
violated and be the better prepared to DEFEND
and ASSERT them.”
Come join us beginning Sunday evening, January
14, 2018 at West Houston Christian Center,
11300 Wilcrest Green, from 6 to 7:30 PM for the
introduction to this great series. The class is
businesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community
with students one-on-one for approximately 30 minutes each week.
Currently, over 700 mentors are matched with students. Mentors must
be 18 years or older.
To become a mentor, you must attend a training session (REGISTER),
complete a global volunteer/mentor application and consent to a
criminal history record check.
Training Sessions - Registration is REQUIRED.
• Register for a training session.
• If you would like to schedule mentor training at your place of business,
please contact the Community Engagement department, Leslie Francis,
Director of Marketing and Business Relations at 281-894-3950.
• A volunteer portal account will be created for you in Raptor once
desk will use at the school in order to give you a nametag). Your login
information will then be sent to you by Raptor via email.
PET INFORMATION
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If
your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash.
Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It
may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show
your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION
(Formerly called Harris County Animal Control)
The Veterinary Public Health Division posts photos of all animals
found on their website and updates it twice daily. If you have lost
your pet, please check this website, www.hcphes.org/vph.
Have you lost a pet?
Start your search immediately, don’t wait to make flyers.
Contact all possible animal control or animal welfare agencies in
the area. Visit each location at least every other day.
Call your pet’s veterinarian and the microchip company to make
sure they have current contact information for you. A citizen may try
to call the veterinarian’s office or microchip company themselves
from your pet’s tags.
Call all the veterinarians in your area to alert them to the description
of your lost pet in case someone brings it to their clinic.
Check with your neighbors, especially families with children and
ask if they’ve seen a pet that looks like yours.
Search your neighborhood on foot, your pet maybe be nearby but
is injured and unable to get back home.
Leave a towel or article of clothing with your scent on it outside of
your home. Your pet may be disorientated and will be attracted
by your scent.
Have you found a pet?
First, think of the animal as lost and not abandoned and make every
effort to reunite the animal to an owner.
Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone and report the animal
as found.
Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or check with a local
veterinarian to scan the animal for a microchip.
Return to the place where you found the animal and put up a found
pet poster near that location.
If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper or website posting,
ask them to provide a picture of the animal and meet in a public
place like a police station.
More information about Microchips & Microchip companies
A microchip is a small device (size of a grain of rice) that is permanent
and implanted with a needle under the skin of pets.
Pets do not have to be given any pain medication or anesthesia to
implant a microchip.
Microchips are not likely to move or need repair if implanted correctly.
Microchips, when scanned, show a unique code. The microchip
must be registered with the corresponding microchip manufacture
to record any owner and animal data.
Microchips do not work like GPS locators or LoJack and cannot give
a signal to find the location of your lost pet.
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents.
While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many
children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could
result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be
kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris
County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized
to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow
any dog or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog
or cat under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in
length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable
of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does
not have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you
work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place
for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not
only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area,
but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or
possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.
Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and
must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises
of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower
beds might keep cats away.
To make a complaint or report an animal that
is not properly restrained please contact:
