The beginning of the calendar year is at its heart a fantasy of newness and 

clean slates – a chance to do things differently. A chance to continue what was 

started towards fulfilment of each vision. 

In reality, it’s also one of the most challenging times of year for many of us, 

as we return from the holidays and work straight into the plate of an overfull 

schedule. 

For our 1 st issue for 2018, we are featuring a young and fresh-faced Marco 

Gumabao. An ABS-CBN artist discovered in the youth show Luv U, is now one 

of the oozing hot eye-candies in the country’s show business. Plus our regular 

articles on Travel, Lifestyle, and Entertainment! 

As we journey pass our 10 th year in the industry, we will strive to adopt to the 

changing realities of the industry and continuously adjust and create new 

services to serve our readers and partners. 

We are at the advent of a constantly fast changing world, a world that promises 

to make the world a better place. A world that will dramatically change the way 

we live our lives from now till maybe the end of time.

#BringMe to Bali! 

Bali is one of the most popular destinations in Asia, and let me count the reasons why!

Simply put, it’s super amazing. If it had enough money 

and no company to run, I would live there in a heartbeat! 

The City of Depansar is bustling, the countryside is 

beautiful, the beaches (outside of Kuta) are picture 

perfect, there is great hiking, friendly and beautiful locals 

and tourist, world-class dining, and it’s inexpensive. Bali 

is the total package. 

There’s a reason why so many people go here and 

never leave. I spent half month exploring this island 

and would happily go back and explore it again. If you 

are considering going here, just pull the trigger and go 

— you won’t regret it. And once you leave the touristy 

southeast corner of the island, you won’t be bothered 

with crowds of tourist who never venture past their bars 

and spas in Ubud and Kuta! 

I will show you a glimpse to Bali’s Culture, Food and 

Adventure to ensure everyone a marvellous time in Bali! 


Food 

Local food is extremely cheap, usually under 10,000 

IDR for street food. A basic local meal will cost closer 

to 15,000 IDR. Western food is a lot more expensive 

but is still affordable at around 125,000 IDR. Fast food 

will cost around 60,000 IDR while a beer at the bar 

will be around 23,000 IDR. A bottle of water will be 

under 5,000 IDR. 

If you plan on cooking your own meals, a week’s worth 

of groceries will cost between 275,000-400,000 

IDR. Be sure to stick to local food items, as imported 

foods like wine, cheese, chicken, and beef are super 

expensive. Buying them often will ruin your budget!

Adventure 

Most people on Bali go surfing, visiting temples 

and landmarks, go to the various nature parks 

including the Ubud Rice Terraces, or go hike a few 

mountains. Most of these activities cost between 

135,000-350,000 IDR. The famous Mt. Batur hike 

costs between 300,000-800,000 IDR depending 

on the company you go with (you can usually split 

this cost up amongst a small group). Diving, bungee 

jumping, and paragliding will cost between 1,000,000- 

2,000,000 IDR per person, per activity. A guided visit 

to the Mother Temple will cost between 400,000- 

1,000,000 IDR. Yoga retreats start at 400,000 IDR.

• Bali is home to most of Indonesia’s 

Hindu minority. According to 

the 2010 Census, 83.5% of Bali’s 

population adhered to Balinese 

Hinduism, followed by 13.4% 

Muslim, Christianity at 2.5% and 

Buddhism 0.5%. 

• Bali’s currency is Indonesia Rupiah 

(IDR), which converts on average at 

PHP 1.00 = IDR 267.00 

• Its capital, Denpasar, is located in 

the southern part of the island. It is 

also where Ngurah Rai International 

Airport is situated. 


Culture 

Bali culture is unique and famous especially for its rich 

and vibrant arts. Various forms of dance and music 

have made Bali’s arts and culture scene one of the most 

diverse in the world. Hinduisim as the main religion is 

the major influence behind its development. Music, 

drama, dance and costumes become a feast for the 

senses during temple festivities. Rites of passage at 

Balinese family households can almost be seen daily, 

celebrating the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. Special 

cultural dates and highlights also mark the calendar, 

through annual art festivals and local revelries that 

visitors should check out to make the best of their visit.

A Different Kind of 

High at Osaka Ohsho 

Good thing that the newly-opened Osaka Ohsho is an emerging 

contender for the perfect “barkada hangout” spot.

Getting a good place for dinner is really difficult 

especially because it’s the Yuletide season. Everyone 

seems to be always outside to dine out and every 

food shop seems to be packed with peers or families 

spending some good time inside. 

Situated at Mega Fashion Hall’s 3rd Floor, Osaka 

Ohsho has the perfect combination of good interior 

and good food. 

Aside from being the World’s Number 1 gyoza, they 

boast a “new thing” in the Philippines, cold noodles 

that flies! It’s a different kind of high, to be honest. I’ve 

never seen such coolness before and I was intrigued 

with the way it looks. Who would have thought that 

cold noodles could work? 

The interior is very modern-minimalist. Wooden tables 

and chairs are aligned on both sides. The restaurant 

has soft yellow lighting that gives the whole place a 

certain laid back vibe. 

The triple treat comes in a single slender ceramic 

plate. Each flavor is matched with its respective dip 

for its maximum dining experience. 

The second flavor is Tempura Soba with Squid 

Ink that creates a wonderful harmony of salty 

and sweet. But for those seafood lovers who are 

used to strong flavors, this one might be a little on 

the. But the kani strips and tempura completely 

salvages this lovely cold soba. 

The last flavor is Bacon and Cheese Somen. Now 

this one is a little tricky. It looks paler than the 

other too but the taste is so much stronger. With 

bacon bits, fried egg and chicken strips, fried 

mushroom and salmon as its garnishing, this one is 

a definite favorite of mine. 

The first is Matcha Teriyaki Tonkotsu with 

noodle strips that are as thin as those of spaghetti 

noodles. The taste is a little sublime but is not 

to be mistaken as light either. Make sure to dip 

onto the tonkotsu sauce to fully taste its magic. 

This dish goes very well with chicken teriyaki and 

tempura enoki. 

We also ordered gyoza as our side dish because we 

want to find out why it’s the World’s Number 1 when it 

comes to this meaty treat; and now we know why. The 

soft outer covering when cut exposes a tender minced 

meat that once dipped in a sauce tastes beyond 

heavenly. 

See how I did not explain the reason behind its flying 

noodles? It’s because I want you to experience it for 

yourself! 


Shiok Shiok: A 

Delightful Taste of 

Singapore

One of our favorite Asian destination is Singapore, 

aside from it being host to the annual September F1 

night race, there’s just so much things to love about 

this republic. Food top bills this fascination. 

Singaporean food is a melting-pot of several 

neighboring region’s specialties. Although some may 

find their dishes extra spicy, the bursting of flavors is 

something we cannot discount. Lots of Filipinos have 

grown to love their dishes and we can attest why. 

If frequenting Singapore is out of the budget, fret 

not, as you can also enjoy the authentic Singaporean 

dishes in the heart of Quezon City. 

For more authenticity, we always order Kaya Toast 

and Teh Tarik to end our meal, although this may 

not exactly be a proper dessert, we just love the 

taste that linger after. 

Just a stone-throw away from the automotive district 

of Banaue, sits a quaint yet lovely restaurant that 

serves one of the most authentic Singaporean dishes 

in town. Shiok Shiok, have been creating buzz. 

Shiok Shiok which also means a feeling of sheer 

pleasure and happiness in Malay. It is fast becoming 

a favorite not just by its community but also been 

driving those who are from other cities to converge in 

one place. 

Hokkien Mi a noodle dish coming from the 

Chinese side of Singapore is their version of 

pancit. The sauce is runny, hence, don’t expect a 

noodle dish. 

Shiok Shiok’s Bah Kut Teh is a crowd favorite. 

This soup dish is made from pork ribs boiled fork 

tender and very aromatic with herbs and spices. 

For those who love anything with salted egg, then 

you have to try their Salted Egg Prawn! I think 

they use real salted egg yolk as oppose to the 

powdered one since they taste fresh. 

We, in particular have been coming 

back every so often and these are just 

some of our favorites: 

Ralph: I have always expressed 

my fondness for beef, hence, 

I always order their Beef 

Rendang. Noticing that their 

version is slightly less pungent 

and have adapted well with 

Filipinos taste-buds. Very tender 

and not too spicy and have the right 

amount of creaminess without drowning the taste 

of beef. 

Another dish that I frequently 

order is their Cereal Chicken 

Rice, chicken fillet coated with 

butter-cereal, both crispy and 

tender way to enjoy poultry. 

Laksa on the other hand is both our top pick from 

the menu as their version of this noodle soup is 

very spicy (which conforms to our taste) with just 

the right amount of Shrimp, fish cake, squid ball, 

Tofu, Crab Stick and boiled egg. 

Their patrons usually go for the Pineapple Fried 

Rice which is considered a one-pot dish as you can 

be satisfied with it without any other viand. 

Michelle: My 

hands down favorite would be 

their Cereal Prawn which can 

be ordered with or without 

shell (I prefer without shell, 

though). With just enough 

coating, not too thick but you 

can still savor the buttery and 

milky flavor. Their prawns are fresh and cooked 

appropriately. I particularly love the marriage of 

butter and curry leaves.

and sweeping the floor, improper cleaning will

Dusting will just scatter dirt particles around 

your house and the law of gravity will just bring 

it back down to where it came from. Using a

Every Child Deserves 

a Thumbs Up for that 

Good Act! 

The belief that goodness is innate in 

every child inspires the preschool, 

LITTLE PRESIDENTS LEARNING 

PALACE (LPLP) to engage all their 

students in the program “Thumbs Up for 

that Good Act” which aims to develop 

awareness of the goodness that each 

child possesses can be manifested 

through actions. 

The project starts by candidly capturing 

any good act that manifests values and 

virtues being done by the child in school. 

Teachers are encouraged to express 

words of appreciation identifying the 

specific good acts. In addition, photos 

are taken and properly labeled with 

captions, these are then displayed on 

bulletin boards to remind students of 

such positivity. 

Parents are also encouraged to do the 

same activity at home to let the child 

know that good acts are welcomed 

everywhere and for the child to 

recognize that his good gestures both at 

home and in school are noticed. Thereby 

giving the child an affirmation which 

inspires more good actions. 

Creating opportunities for them to do 

good is also helpful. With this in mind, 

the school recently culminated a fundraiser 

for Marawi victims in partnership 

with Radio Television Malacanang 

(RTVM). Families of students were all 

encouraged to take part in donating to 

the cause. It is also important to explain 

to the children that this is done to aid our 

fellowmen in crisis. 

LPLP also held a gift-giving activity with 

their students at Hospicio De San Jose 

which gave the students the opportunity 

to share to the kids in the hospice. 

Through these noble projects, the school 

is hopeful to inculcate the three core 

values (Respect, Responsibility, and 

Resourcefulness) and other virtues to 

our pupils that is aligned to the school’s 

Mission-Vision in “Shaping Tomorrow’s 

Leaders Today”!

and shocked the nation by his full 

packed, toned lusciously body. And 

sashayed the runway with a 6 pack 

abs for a local clothing brand. What a 

daring move in his career. 

Now, 2018 has come. What will be his 

next move? More Marco! More!

How did you start your showbiz career? 

Siguro nung nasa mga 16 years old ako, yung 

mom ko kasi close friend niya si Direk Bobot 

Mortiz. Tapos naghahanap si Direk nun nang 

leading man for Miles Ocampo for Luv U. 

Tinanong lang ako ni Mom nun kung gusto ko 

bang mag-audition. Ginawa ko, after school 

dumiretso ako kay Direk nun and nag-audition 

ako. Wala pa akong acting experience nung 

time na yun. 

What was your very remarkable role as an 

actor? 

Siguro lahat ng mga naging roles ko sa Kapag 

Nasa Katwiran, Ipaglaban Mo -- Yung episode 

na pinatay ko yung kaibigan ko, meron din yung 

isa na ni-rape ko yung isang babae kasi ayaw 

ko mawala siya sa’kin, ganun. Lahat kasi ng 

mga roles ko dun sobrang edgy ng character, 

dark; hindi yung normal na pa-cute lang. Yung 

talagang challenging roles talaga. 

How does your celebrity status affect your 

travel experience? 

Well, kung dito sa Philippines, okay lang naman 

like di naman ako naha-hassle if may mga tao 

na kilala ako. Lalo na sa abroad, siyempre dun 

konti lang yung nakakakilala sakin. So hindi siya 

mahirap. And it’s fun kapag napapansin ka ng 

isang tao, okey din sya sa feeling. Ako naman 

in terms of travel, okey naman sa akin na may 

nakakakilala. 

Share us your most fun travelling experience. 

Nung nag-Hong Kong kaming magkakabarkada 

ko. It was my birthday back in 2015, sinama 

ko yung friends ko. Tapos ayun, super saya. 

Pumarty kami nang maraming beses, tapos 

shopping, roaming around Hong Kong, nag- 

Disneyland kami. 

What was the worst travelling experience? 

Worst? Wala naman. Siguro yung pinakanahassle 

lang ako nung pumunta akong Japan. 

Kasama ko nun sila Daniel [Padilla], pero nauna 

yung flight ko. So pagdating ko ng Osaka, I flew 

alone tapos ‘di ko mahanap yung AirBnB na 

pag-sstayan namin kasi hindi ko maintindihan 

yung directions tapos yung mga street signs, 

puro Japanese. Then finally nung nahanap 

ko na yung place, wala yung susi ng house 

namin. Na-stucked ako sa labas. Buti na lang 

dumating yung caretaker, pinabuksan ko yung 

house. Akala niya kasi late pa kami dadating, 

di nya alam na ako yung mauuna. Siguro if 

hinintay ko pa sila Daniel nun, 8 hours pa akong 

maghihintay nun sa labas at napakalamig pa 

nun. That was my first time pa.

What are the things you look first when 

travelling? 

Shempre food. Yun yung unang una kong 

hinahanap, like the best food. Tapos walang 

diet diet kapag nasa abroad. I don’t usually 

plan din kasi what to do, kung ano lang 

unang makita ko. Tamad kasi akong magresearch, 

whatever I see lang. Friends ko kasi 

usually nagpplan eh, taga-sama lang ako, 

like kung anong gusto nilang gawin sasama 

lang ako. 

Would you rather travel with a large group, 

with a special someone, or alone? 

Of course not alone. Masaya yung with a 

special someone pero mas masaya kung 

group kayo. It depends kasi eh, kung gusto 

mo ng pasyal-pasyal and have fun talaga, 

dun ka sa barkada mo. Pero if you want yung 

intimate, siyempre with a special someone. 

If you got a free trip to somewhere, 

everything covered for a week, where 

would that be? Why? 

Amsterdam. Kasi I heard a lot of stories 

about that place and gusto kong maexperience 

yun. Most of the movies I 

watched kasi sa Amsterdam yung setting 

nila, so gusto kong malaman yung feeling, 

kung gaano kasaya and kumusta mga tao 

dun. Pero I also want to go to Paris, dun sa 

Eiffel Tower. I have never been pa kasi to 

Europe, kaya kung may chance, Amsterdam 

ang uunahin ko.Who do you want to be with 

in a dream travel? 

Shempre yung magiging girlfriend ko, or 

yung future wife ko. Masaya din kasi kapag 

friends kasama mo eh. The more, the merrier 

ba. 

Other things you want to promote? 

Well, we’re doing a movie soon. It’s called 

Para sa Broken-Hearted, kasama ko dito sila 

Yassi Pressman, Sam Concepcion, Louise 

Delos Reyes & Shy Carlos. We haven’t started 

filming pero ipapalabas siya soon.

What’s on the Fashion Horizon for 2018?

Because we’re always looking to 

stay on top of the newest, coolest 

and most interesting trends, we’ve 

already got our eyes on the style 

trends that’ll dominate fashion 

horizon in 2018. 

Though 2017 introduced us to 

some cool and flirty trends -- From 

statement-making fringe to lavender 

challenging millennial pink as the 

next IT color -- we’re eagerly awaiting 

what fun and fashionable things 

we can look forward to seeing on 

clothing racks in 2018. Take a look 

ahead at the hottest trends to know 

for 2018! 

1. Berets 

They’re the “it” topper for fall runways in 2017, 

and it looks like it’s on the upswing for next 

year, too. And why not? They’re cute, super 

lightweight, easy to wear, and take any look 

from bland to bold. 

3. Wide-leg Pants 

The trouser trend that just won’t let go, and 

it looks like they’re here to stay through 2018. 

From wide-leg cropped trousers, to high-waist 

paper-bag pants, you’ll see plenty of these 

cool and comfortable bottoms throughout 

2018. 

2. Fanny Packs 

Ditch a traditional handbag and enjoy the 

convenience of your new go-to bag style 

and make it your signature piece of the 

summer. 

4. 100% Cotton Jeans 

The no-stretch denim trend is in full swing, 

with consumers turning their eyes toward 

100-percent cotton jeans and denim in 2018. 

Plus, if you’re looking to get on the capsule 

wardrobe train, timeless denim is a must-have. 


5. Statement Earrings 

Statement earrings are one of our favorite 

trends from 2017, so we’re glad to see 

they’re still trending up for 2018. From 

oversized hoops to hammered metal, 

oversized earrings are the trend that keeps 

hanging on. 

7. Embelished Shoes/Bags 

Expect to see pearls, diamonds, sequins and 

glitter on your kicks and bags headed into the 

new year. 

6. Cozy Curdoroy 

It’s making a comeback in 2018, and we couldn’t 

be more thrilled. After all, corduroy is basically just 

a textured form of velvet, and you know we love 

velvet. Better still, corduroy is a perfect trouser to 

transition between workwear and weekend wear. 

8. Brand Logos 

Those iconically ‘90s branded sweatshirts,

the Shammgod Crossover

If you watch basketball then you might heard of 

the “Shammgod”. The Shammgod is a dribble 

move wherein the ball handler exposes the ball 

for a few moments before snatching it back to 

create separation. It is an extremely effective 

and entertaining move that most of the elite 

guards in the NBA have it in their arsenal. 

The reason why it is so effective is because 

it was created by God himself. What I mean 

is that a man called “God” Shammgod Wells 

invented the move. God Shammgod is more 

popular as a street legend than an NBA player. 

He was part of the 1997 NBA Draft where the 

likes of Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady were 

drafted. He was the 45th overall pick which 

was deep in to the 2nd round of the draft. He 

was a McDonalds All-American and a New York 

Legend. However, he only for 20 games in the 

NBA before calling it quits. 

He mentored the Black Mamba, Kobe Bryant, 

so that Kobe can improve his handles. He is 

held in high regards by elite guards in the NBA 

Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul and Steph Curry. 

Even NBA Legends tout him as having the 

best handles in basketball history. Shammgod 

did not last long in the NBA with no concrete 

reason why. He has the skills, the physical 

attributes and the attitude to be a successful 

NBA star. Instead he spent most of his playing 

career outside the USA including stints in 

the Chinese Basketball Association and the 

Euroleague. 

He enrolled back in Providence in 2012 to finish 

his studies. He now has a Bachelors degree in 

Leadership Development. He also served under 

Providence Head Coach Ed Cooley and was a 

huge factor in the development of NBA player 

Kriss Dunn. He is now working as a player 

development ciach for the Dallas Mavericks. 

He may not have an illustrious NBA career but 

his name is engraved in history. The Shammgod 

will stay as a legendary crossover move created 

by God.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi 

Scores Big On Its Opening

he Star Wars franchise has always been a 

Tsuccessful and popular franchise. Fans loved 

the first trilogy and the Prequels had mixed 

reactions. However, the newest set of Star 

Wars movies is conquering the box offices yet 

again. 

The latest installment, the Last Jedi , recently 

had a very successful opening weekend. In the 

US, it earned over $ 250 million which is the 

second most successful opening weekend ever. 

Internationally, it also garnered an even larger 

share of the box office with over $ 230 million 

of earning. That is an accumulated $ 450 

million of global earning for the movie. 

This is will also skyrocket the following weeks 

since dedicated fans will definitely do some 

repeat viewings to digest every element of 

the movie and see if there are any Easter Eggs 

hidden in the movie itself. This puts Rey, Finn, 

Poe and the rest of the gang in the history 

books of the movie industry. 

Disney is doing a great job by supplying 

fans with impressive movies from two of the 

greatest franchises with Star Wars and Marvel. 

Things are only looking up for Disney’s Marvel 

Cinematic Universe with their acquisition of 

Fox’s formerly exlusive franchises such as the 

X-Men, Fantastic Four, Deadpool and more.
