THE DEALING IS DONE
FRONTENACS FINISH 10 DAYS OF TRADING WITH A NEW LOOK TO THE BLACK AND GOLD

After the busiest 10 days leading into the trade
deadline, the Kingston Frontenacs are a much
different team from the 23 players who started
the season on the roster. Going into last Friday’s
game against the Windsor Spitfires, General
Manager Darren Keily made trades with Windsor,
acquiring forward, and Kingston-native, Gabe
Vilardi and defenceman Sean Day for rookie
forward Cody Morgan and Priority Selection
picks, and acquiring forward Cliff Pu from the
London Knights for second-year forward Nathan
Dunkley and Priority Selection picks.
Over the weekend, the Kingston Frontenacs
announced a second deal with the London
Knights, acquiring forward Max Jones for
second-year forward Sergey Popov and Priority
Selection picks. A final deal on Tuesday saw
Kingston acquire defenceman Mitchell Byrne
from the Erie Otters for Priority Selection picks.
The depth added to the roster is deep. Not
even taking into account their regular season
experience, this group of five players have a
combined 119 OHL playoff games of experience.
All five have played in the Memorial Cup, and
four have their names etched on it.
After dropping last Friday’s game 4-3 to
Windsor, the Frontenacs rebounded with a 6-4
win in Barrie over the Colts and an 8-3 win in
Niagara over the IceDogs. For this weekend’s
trio of games (Friday hosting Guelph, Saturday
hosting Oshawa, and Sunday in Oshawa) the
Frontenacs have their final roster set.
Cliff Pu and Jason Robertson scored back-toback
hat-tricks last weekend. The last time the
Kingston Frontenacs saw back-to-back hattricks
was when Darcy Greenaway and Cody
Alcock pulled the same feat in February 2012.
TOMORROW’S GAME TIME:
The Kingston Frontenacs host the Oshawa
Generals for the CHL’s Saturday Showcase
Game that will air nationally on Sportsnet. With
an opening face-off for 3:30 p.m., doors to
Rogers K-Rock Centre will open at 2:00 p.m.
for Season Ticket Holders and 2:30 p.m. for the
general public.
ROBERTSON ON PACE:
Forward Jason Robertson had 84 career goals
heading into this weekend’s games, good for
18th on the All-Time Career Frontenacs list. He’s
1 goal behind Cory Emmerton, 2 behind Darcy
Greenaway and Ethan Werek. He’s 27th on
the All-Time Career Franchise List (Canadians,
Raiders, Frontenacs), 3 behind Ron Handy. - KF

POST TRADE DEADLINE FOCUS
In the past 10 days, the Frontenacs have been
very busy in the trade market. When so many
bodies are moving in and out some players may
get distracted by the possibility of being moved to
another team. All that is now behind them as the
OHL trade deadline has passed. The players that
are here now are the players that will finish the
season here. They can forget about the possibility
of having to move to a new city in the middle of
the season and focus on getting used to their new
teammates and winning games.
FINISH THE HIGH QUALITY CHANCES
Last Friday against Windsor, the new look offence
created some good scoring chances, but couldn’t
get on the scoreboard after the first period. In
the end, it cost them the game as Windsor did
finish on their chances. The rest of the weekend
saw Kingston put up big numbers in Barrie and
Niagara coming out with wins in both of those
games. Although defence will always be an
important part of their game, with the players
on this roster Kingston is capable of simply
outscoring teams now. If they finish on their
high-quality scoring chances, Guelph will
have a hard time keeping pace.
GET ALL FOUR LINES SCORING
With the addition of Vilardi, Pu and Jones up
front, there will be a few guys moving down
a line that can put up some points. Guys like
Ryan Cranford and Matt Hotchkiss could be
seeing a move to the third line. Those players
should look at this as a positive. Of course,
every player wants to be a top line guy, but
those players will be high end players playing
against the opponents worst defensive
pairings. They were already 20 goal players
on the second line, so despite slightly less ice
time, they should be given a better opportunity
to score. If Kingston can score with all four
lines, they won’t lose many games. - KF

NEW FRONTENACS
GET THE POINT(S)

Gabe Vilardi thought three games in three days
would be tough on him, considering he hadn’t
played a hockey game since last May.
It hardly looked that way, however, on Sunday
afternoon in St. Catharines (January 7).
The 18-year-old Kingston native scored the game’s
first two goals and added two assists as the Kingston
Frontenacs defeated the Niagara IceDogs 8-3
before a crowd of 5,008 at the Meridian Centre.
Vilardi finished his first three games with the
Frontenacs with six points.
“We are just trying to get chemistry. We had a good
three-in-three. It’s going good,” Vilardi said in a
post-game interview on a cable television broadcast.
“[Gabe] is feeling his way back into it after being a
long time away from playing. He sure did a good job
for us today,” Frontenacs head coach Jay Varady
said.
Jason Robertson followed Cliff Pu’s hat-trick
performance in Saturday’s 6-4 win over the Barrie
Colts with one of his own on Sunday.
Defenceman Sean Day, who came over with Vilardi
in a deal with the Windsor Spitfires, had a goal and
three assists. Pu had two assists.
“Look at the scoresheet and there are new names
with lots of points next to [them]. These guys came
in and have been able to contribute right away,”
Varady said. “Over the past couple of games, we
have found a couple of combinations that have
been extremely hot. We have found a power play
that has been able to find the back of the net [with
five goals on nine power plays].
“It is the beginning of a process and we are going to
continue to build the group.”
Linus Nyman and Brett Neumann also scored for
the Frontenacs, who led 3-0 after the first and 6-1
after two periods.
Goaltender Jeremy Helvig made 31 saves in picking
up his 16th win.
Helvig was involved in a momentum-stopper play
in the second period after Niagara had scored to
cut the Kingston lead to 3-1. Ben Jones, on an
IceDogs penalty kill, broke in alone, but Helvig
made a glove save.
The Frontenacs turned around and scored on the
power play, with Robertson taking Vilardi’s pass and
beating goaltender Stephen Dhillon.
Day scored his first as a Frontenac to make it 5-1
and then Nyman followed with his fifth goal in the
past three games to end the second-period scoring.

Niagara’s Kirill Maksimov faces a league suspension
after a head check on defenceman Conor Ali in the
third period. Ali left the ice and missed a shift before
returning to the game.
Maksimov went off for a five-minute major, during
which the Frontenacs scored power-play goals by
Robertson and Neumann.
On Saturday in Barrie, Pu’s second game for the
Frontenacs was a huge one. Pu produced his first
OHL hat trick in the win.
Helping out Pu was linemate Robertson, who
assisted on five goals. That’s a career single-game
high for assists for Robertson.
Nyman added two goals and Ted Nichol had the
other.
Goaltender Brendan Bonello made 29 saves in
gaining the goaltending win.
The Robertson, Pu, Brett Neumann line accounted
for 12 scoring points. Pu had three goals and an
assist and Neumann assisted on three goals.
“We were disappointed with [Friday’s 4-3 home-ice
loss to Windsor]. You could see Cliff, Sean and Gabe
starting to blend in,” Robertson said in a post-game
interview on the cable telecast.
“Cliff is a really dynamic player. It’s his first career
hat trick. I am really happy for him.”
Robertson was asked post-game if the addition of
the new players puts pressure on the Frontenacs.
“It is all about the right mindset. Everyone needs to
get the all-in mentality,” Robertson said. - KF
