their daily tasks – and after all, where and how did the servants live? How was to be a servant in those times?
How did it feel to put your entire life in the service of a noble family and by being invisible make their life
more comfortable? All important information regarding entrance and guided tours can be found at www.
Try more!
SUMMER
If we take into consideration the tourist features of Gyula town and its surroundings,
four days are certainly not enough for everything, it is worth a week’s stay!
From the cultural offer of Gyula, we recommend the viewing of the Erkel Ferenc Memorial House, the Ladics
House, the Kohán Art Gallery, the Landscape Water House, the Farm Museum and the Castle of Gyulavár.
In addition to this, we have many active programs, including hiking, cycling and water tours, and plenty of
horse riding and fishing opportunities. Among our guaranteed programs, we organise cross-country and
cross-border excursions, including visitation of castles, of towns such as Nagyszalonta and Nagyvárad, and
Arad and its surroundings. Additionally, our guests can try out our air wheels and visit the cosy streets of
Gyula, and in a unique way, they can capture their experience in the Gyulahús photo kiosk inside the Gyula
Castle Bath.
It’s worth looking around in the town of Békés, too. The Jantyik Mátyás Museum is a delightful place to
relax, and if someone chooses to enjoy the active programs, we recommend the possibilities offered by
the Békés-Dánfok Resort (canoeing, canoe-kayak), horseback riding fishing, hiking, cycling and water tours
options.
In Békéscsaba you can visit the Slovakian Landscape House as well as the downtown - the largest Lutheran
DIVE INTO GYULA’S CULTURE!
12

Castle Bath and AquaPalace
The Castle Bath of Gyula offers approx. 5000 m² water surface area with a total of 16 pools of thermal water.
The thermal water of 72°C erupts to the surface from a depth of 2,500 meters beneath our earth’s surface.
We recommend it primarily for the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and diseases as well as for localised
nervous system rehabilitative treatments following accidents. It’s also beneficial for post-operative
recovery and inflammatory diseases - including gynaecological conditions. The thermal water contains alkali-hydrogen
carbonate-flora and as you can see, has a brownish tint due to the high mineral content.
The treatment sections are opened both summer and winter time under the strict supervision of a medical
specialists and rheumatologists. Patients can benefit from services such as mud and galvanic treatments,
electrotherapy, light baths, weight baths, underwater massage treatments, medical gymnastics and medical
swimming exercises.
The waters of thermal well No.1 belongs to the group of sodium hydrogen carbonated healing waters and
benefits bathers with the following:
It enhances the regenerative ability of the body, has a painkilling effect and mitigates allergic reactions.
The waters calm the nervous system and you can expect a decrease in sleep disruptions and disorders.
13

Castle Bath and AquaPalace
Recent investments by the end of 2013 enriched the Castle Baths exceptional interior with this new water
complex. Now the thermal baths can serve families throughout the entire year. It was designed the younger
generation in mind - not simply for those who only take baths in thermal waters. The new water park
exceeds 6,000 m² of which 900 m² are composed of water pools and countless adventure elements: lazy
rivers, horizontal massage waterfalls, geysers, neck showers, diving pools and illuminated tunnel slides,
donut slide and many other different elements. It has all been carefully designed to provide perfect comfort
and maximum fun and recreation - in all seasons and for all ages.
Having been enhanced with a new family water park called Aqua Palace, the Gyula Castle Spa has become
the newest, best-equipped, European standard lido, spa and water park complex in the South Great Plain.
It provides perfect entertainment, in all seasons, for visitors of every generation who look for recreation.
Here, they will find it. The deservedly famous four-star baths at the Gyula Castle Spa pamper, relax, exercise
and heal. For our guests arriving with infants we have converted a room into a nursing room within the
new family water park. The separated unit has been furnished with a microwave oven as well as changing
tables, comfortable cots and special furniture; Warming neither baby nor baby food will be a problem.
If the children get tired of exploring the water world, they can gain new experiences on the playgrounds
designed for the little ones and young teenagers, respectively.
The most visible and attractive elements of the new water park are the two huge over 10 meters high
slides. Our slides, such as a family slide, a “light tunnel” body slide timing the sliding rate and an “upwards
inclining / dropping” in-line tube slide going upwards in a unique way in Hungary, guarantee the unforgettable
entertainment of the visitors. We also take a snapshot of the slide experience.
14

Gyula Castle
Built in the fifteenth century, it is the only intact remaining brick castle from the towns of the Hungarian Plains.
The start of its construction is linked to the name of the nobleman Janos Maroti Macso and its completion
to the Janos Corvin’s name. To Janos Corvin’s name is also linked the construction of the Bastion, which
is located near the Kerecseny gate. After the assault from 1566 the town was under Ottoman influence for
129 years, until 1695 resulting in the expulsion of the Turks out of the country.
Finally, during the time of Harruckern Janos, the Castle functioned as a place for manufacturing beer and
brandy, and even as a jail. There are 7 rooms; one room is archive and also county council meetings are taking
place. In 2005 the Castle was revived being renovated and opened to the public in form of a museum
so that visitors have the opportunity to know the military history of the town, in the chapel of the Castle
weddings are officiated. Those interested in culinary pleasures can practice winery in medieval style in the
halls of the Castle where the past and the modern form a suitable space for conferences and other events.
Upon request we provide also a guide.
The monument serves as a multipurpose theater every summer since 1964, performances being viewed
in two locations: in the Castle and in its Renaissance courtyard and on the scene on lake near Medieval
Castle of Gyula. The only remaining brick castle in good conditions in Central Europe, where the 24 rooms
recounted the events of seven centuries. From the “belvedere” or as it is called bastion opens a picturesque
panorama of the town of Gyula.
15

Almásy Castle Visitor Centre
Unlike other exhibitions, Castle Almásy, using unique interactive tools, gives its visitors the opportunity to
learn not only about the way of life of aristocrats who lived in these buildings, but also about the lives of
people who lived in the castle and its environs. With this superb exhibition we enable the visitor to „see”
the previously „unseeable”, the invisible engine that worked daily, a unique perspective indeed. And even
more than that, visitors are invited to carry out the different tasks and chores of those times... fascinating
for anyone of any age who has even a small interest in history and the evolution of our society!
The visitor’s information center of Almásy Castle reaches out in its own language towards both children
and adults, the young and the elderly, because the topics as well as the instruments serve people of all
ages, providing authentic experiences and an interesting, unforgettable program.
Passing through rooms and spacious halls, crossing these opulent and fascinating enclosures so representative
of its era, surely questions will arise: how did the people live in those days in this castle? Who was
warming the stoves and fireplaces, how many liters of water were consumed in one day, who washed the
linen underwear of the countess? But above all we are curious to find out how the servants lived - because
even when their work remained unseen they succeeded in making the everyday life of the nobility easy
and comfortable. The Almásy Castle and the visitor’s information center can offer you answers to these
and more questions. The castle with its almost 30 rooms required well-coordinated maintenance, organisation
and hard work. This was accomplished by inside and the outside servants, an administration that
was incredibly complex and not so different from that of a modern hotel.
16

Gyula Castle Theater
Every evening, from early July to mid-August, The Gyula Castle Theatre offers in its summer season, historical
shows full of drama: opera and operetta, various recitals of ballet and dance ensembles from Hungary
and abroad. Also puppetry, classical music, medieval music, festivals of Jazz and Blues, folklore music and
folk dances, all designed and organized in order to delight the guests and visitors of Gyula.
In recent years besides actors and famous local artists, increasingly more often well known international
artists honored us with their presence on stages of The Gyula Castle Theater.
The meeting takes place here every year, the folklore culture being so typical in the great Plains of Hungary
and in the Carpathian Basin. Well-known and appreciated craftsmen are gathering from Hungarian counties
such as: Szolnok, Bács-Kiskun, Békés and Hajdú-Bihar – and also from abroad from Vojvodina, Banat
and Bácska - Serbia and also from Romania the counties Arad and Bihar are always present. Each year they
keep coming to present their colorful folklore, dances, clothes and handicrafts, culture and tradition being
passed on from generation to generation with such devotion and love that should be sustained and honored
the right way. We are proud and happy to host such a gathering which reflects the respect and love for
our past, roots and traditions.
17

The centennial confectionery
A second oldest confectionery in Hungary, which operates since 1840 in the beautiful building built in
imperial style, with walls covered by paintings and furnished by unaltered original Biedermeier furniture
offers its traditional cakes, sugar powdered slices, chocolates and ice creams of many different assortments.
This confectionery succeeds in taking its guests back in time and in the environment full of bustle
of the old fashioned cafes of the last century which only a few remained untouched like this. In the former
workshop, the multitude of objects used in this profession will helps us get acquainted with its traditions,
thus increasing interest in visiting this place.
18

Schnapps tasting house
Evoking the times of Baron János Harruckern, the Pálinka Tasting House is adjacent to the distillery. Visitors
on their own or in groups are introduced to the world of pálinka at this fine venue, offering a variety of tasting
events and fine food for connoisseurs at the distillery with its idyllic and peaceful setting and intimate
atmosphere, and the Tasting House that recalls the day of Baron János Harruckern. One of the newest and
most beautiful tasting houses in Southeast Hungary was built on a 7.5-hectar strip of land. The project started
in 2008, partly using EU funding within the framework of the tourist attraction development section of
the South Great Plain Operative Programme of the New Hungary Develppment Plan. In addition to introducing
visitors to the world of pálinka, we paid special attention to construct the Tasting House in a way that
makes it suitable for individual guests as well as group events.
Our aim was to build a friendly venue for pálinka tasting, a place that is in full harmony with the atmosphere
and spirit of the historic spa city of Gyula. We meant the Tasting House as a venue that provides high quality
services and adds to the attraction of the city for tourists and visitors as well as local people. Away from
the noise of the city, the Tasting House is a 4-5 minute drive from the centre. Its showroom can host 40-45
visitors at a time for tasting and presentations. The house also features a bar and a store selling local products.
Visitors are introduced to the technology of pálinka making by our distil master, who guides them on
a tour starting from the orchard, and they can follow the process from growing the fruits to the final stage
of making our excellent pálinkas. A short documentary film introduces visitors to a variety of subjects, such
as the Békés Prune Pálinka – a Hungaricum –, and the history of distilling pálinka in Gyula, as well as today’s
technology, and the culture of drinking pálinka. Theory is followed by practice: a tasting of our award-winnig
pálinkas while the bread-dough or the pork is baked in the oven. Upon request, we cook in billycans or
make grilled dishes.
Gyula Kolbász Museum
Gyula
This is a collection that was founded before 1985, when the former head of the investment department of
Gyula Meat Factory, Mr. Szigethy Attila, recognized the importance of Gyula sausage as a culinary product
worthy of recognition and appreciation. The fame of Gyula sausage and the brand as we know it today would
not have been possible without the hard work of our ancestors.
The exhibition was opened in 1985 and materials presented here were mostly donated by craftsmen butchers
of Gyula. This project was started with a very noble goal, namely, to keep and preserve the memories
of better days of the meat industry of Gyula town. The exhibition remained open in an unaltered form until
1998. Then, due to preservation and structural renovations, it was accessed only by groups on appointment
basis.
After 2007 dark days followed for the History Museum of Meat Industry. The collection was liquidated and
much of the existing equipment and materials were transported to the town Békéscsaba. The rest, sadly,
disappeared or were lost forever. Meanwhile, the museum building was put up for sale by the Municipality
of Gyula.
At its October 22nd 2007 meeting, the Town Council of Gyula, based on the proposal of deputy and lobbyist
Durko Karoly, well known as a cultural counselor f the town, adopted a urgent resolution by which it
was decided that the building of the old slaughterhouse would not be sold. Instead, on its premises, a new
Exhibition of History of Gyula Meat Industry would be organised. The building became operational again
and now hosts not only the museum but also gastronomic events dedicated to the local product: the Gyula
sausage. At that time traditionalists butchers in the city Gyula declared interest and agreed to contribute to
this project. On 31 st October 2007 lovers and friends of Gyula town and especially by contributing of the
initiative gentlemen: Durko Karoly, Balla Tibor and Szalai George, the full collection of the old meat industry
museum was transported from Békéscsaba and was returned to Gyula. It was then temporarily placed in the
Corvin Janos Museum.
20

Farm Museum
The boundaries of the Hungarian steppe region that have been declared a national nature reserve and
thanks to the donations made by peasants from the Gyula area, this farm museum was founded. This land is
under the protection of the environment and attracts nature lovers because of its environment full of plants
and birds. The nearly 2,000 exhibits in the museum’s collection present the culture, customs, agriculture
and life of peasants’ in this wilderness. The organizer offers various programs throughout the day such as
horseback riding, carriage rides, viewing of horses and foals, horse breeding and racing, oxen and buffaloes,
sheep and domestic and farm animals - and even more! And here, you also have the opportunity to stay
overnight.
21

Sióréti horse riding and recreation center
The Sióréti Riding Center opened its gates in 2010. Here you can ride on free grounds or bound to bridle
horse, trotting on land or take a ride in a wagon ride. In 2013 The Sióréti Riding Center was enriched by a
1850 m² indoor riding school, so horse and horse racing lovers can enjoy their hobby and passion all season
and by all weather. The Sióréti Riding Centre has special courses, where young and old are able to learn not
only riding horses but also the art of herds. There is a tradition in terms of quality courses regarding horseback
riding, so we can guarantee that you will find the best professional coaches. With their help here can
learn not only beginners but also future competitors who are able to compete in national and international
riding competitions in the near future. These courses are taken and organized after undertaking some
particular sporting skills and are subdued also to requirements, the training schedules being based on a
predetermined places. Riding courses: in the saddle, the saddle at pool or riding, jumping courses. Wagon
weapons they fought in the past centuries. Following the visit of the castle, our guests are invited to view
mansion, our guests can not only get to know the lives of the noblemen, but they also find out who lit a
fire in the fireplaces, how many liters of water were consumed on a single day, who washed and ironed the
countess’s lingerie, what was on the staff’s agenda, which was their daily tasks – and after all, where and
how did the servants live? How was to be a servant in those times? How did it feel to put your entire life
Day 2. – Monday
AUTUMN
The Gyula Castle Bath is a prominent tourist attraction of Gyula, offering a whole day program. The Castle
Bath is a 5-star rated resort with strand suited for bathing, spa and theme park, with its 8.5-hectare garden
with a unique flora!
The thermal water of the Castle Bath has been officially recognised as a medicinal water since 1968, and as
a consequence in 1971 the Castle Bath was named a Spa Park and in 1986 town of Gyula was awarded and
declared a Spa Town. The alkaline hydrocarbon-chloride medicinal water that erupts at a temperature of 72
° C from a depth of 2005 meters can serve as a remedy for locomotor disorders, rheumatic complaints, and
local nervous system disorders, acidic gastrointestinal problems and inflammatory gynaecological diseases,
and can also be used in accidents and post-operative rehabilitation treatments. Throughout the entire year
from winter till summer, therapies are undergoing under the observation of various and famous specialists
in rheumatology.
The program on the second day - after breakfast - starts with the medical section of the spa resort: health
check, medical examination and treatment, and spa bath is awaiting our visitors.
As an afternoon program, we recommend a short walk to the town centre. During the tour, the ideal stop
is the second oldest confectionery in Hungary, The Centennial Confectionery which is more than 100 years
old, offering excellent coffees, ice creams, pastries and hand-made bonbons.
In the evening, it is worth exploring what kind of cultural program our beautiful spa town has to offer! The
program calendar of www.visitgyula.com website offers a complete insight into the programs of the Castle
Theatre Chamber Orchestra, the János Mogyoróssy Town Library and the Erkel Ferenc Cultural Centre and
Museum.
Day 3. – Tuesday
In the afternoon a number of exhibition halls in Gyula are waiting for our healing-seeker guests: both the
Erkel Ferenc Memorial House and the Ladics House are worth visiting, but we should also not forget the
units, a guided tour can be requested at the individual venues with prior arrangement, or individual sightseeing
tours can be requested at the Tourinform office.
In the evening, we recommend to make a tour of town Békéscsaba and after a dinner or even a sausage
Theatre Group.
program.
AUTUMN
If we take into consideration the tourist features of Gyula town and its surroundings,
four days are certainly not enough for everything, it is worth a week’s stay!
Although the beneficial effects of the Gyula thermal water are showing already after three days, a complete
healing process can sum up a few weeks, so it is better and is recommended to plan a longer stay in our
spa town for this purpose. But there are also other types of program opportunities in the fall: in the castle,
there is falconry show awaiting our guests on Saturday, and on Sundays, it is worth buying from the area’s
delicacies on the local market. Our guests can also take part in a schnapps tasting at the Gyulai Schnapps
Manufactory, or explore the churches of our beautiful town through a thematic sightseeing-tour.
In Békéscsaba you can visit the Slovakian Landscape House as well as the downtown - the largest Lutheran
church in Europe can be seen here - and also the Munkácsy Mihály Memorial House.
In Békés we additionally recommend the visitation of the landscape house and the Békés Schnapps Centre
as further program possibilities.
GYULA SPA RESORT, BALM FOR BODY
31

33

34

Erkel Ferenc Memorial House
The School of Németgyula and the teacher’s house were built in 1795. In 1821 the house that served as a
school and also a home for the teachers’ family, received an additional classroom to the old one. The house
had a wing overlooking the schoolyard, while the opening on Ajtósi Street served as a house. The designated
school deteriorated considerably in the winter of 1829-1830 and partially collapsed. The house in its
current form was built by Mihai Nuszbek at the end of 1830. The teacher’s house ,which was at the same
time cantor of the town, has got its final form after a renovation that took place in the 1830.
A teacher named Joseph Erkel arrived in 1806 from Bratislava lived and taught in this school until 1841.
Here was born in 1810 on November 7, and had a son named Ferenc Erkel, who later became well known
as the composer of the National Anthem of Hungary and founder of the National Opera. In the exhibition
room visitors are greeted by terminals of national anthems of different countries of Europe, followed by
rooms dedicated to music. Four sons of Ferenc Erkel were also musicians less known but equally precocious
and so a third room was dedicated to their work and contributions. Ferenc Erkel was also a very good
chess player, which is celebrated in the form of an annual chess competition which bears his name. The
bedroom, living room and kitchen evoke the past rustic lifestyle and the Erkel family.
35

Ladics House
Built on one level in the early nineteenth century, this common baroque house served as a notary house.
Lawyer Dr. György Ladics and his wife were the first to reside here and in later years their descendants, until
its final transformation into a museum. The family liked to preserve tradition. And so all the objects that reflect
the lifestyle of the family - furniture, wallpaper, decorations, clothes, even personal items which reflect
their spiritual lives - remained practically unaltered throughout the five generations that followed.
The town of Gyula decided to establish a museum after buying the house and contents. It’s a unique collection
indeed. With no exaggeration we are very proud of this collection and proud that the legacy of Ladics
family has a particular value to the town of Gyula. In a unique way this fully furnished house is an independent
source of history having born witness to life of middle-class citizens who lived in the rural areas in the
time of dualism in Hungary, especially the period between the two world wars. Across Hungary no other
such houses have been so preserved. We have some reflecting the poverty and simplicity of the people
who worked the land, and on the opposite side we have palaces and pompous halls, mansions and castles
of the nobles of the royal houses, full of shimmering delights. Therefore Ladics House is an absolute novelty,
because it presents the lifestyle of the citizens of the middle class of society.
36

Kohán Gallery
Spring of 2014 saw the full renovations of the Göndöcs Garden. The Kohán Gallery, as the name indicates,
presents works of art created by painter György Kohan. This marvelous collection has been moved into a
larger building than that which was used previously. The former building has been refurbished as a multi-purpose
hall for cultural events, and is now called Vigadó. In this renovated building, sparkling again
with its old brilliance, a variety cultural programs and events are regularly organized for both locals and
visitors to our town. The building was built in 1889 on the drained bed of the Cris River, which is now a nationalized
park of town Gyula. The purpose was to host theater performances, art programs and music and
dance evenings. From 1952-1975 the building, which was built in neoclassical style with four big white
entrance columns, served as Town Hall. Since 1979 the paintings donated and bequeathed to the town of
Gyula by the painter György Kohan found their home within these walls. Kohan was born in 1910 in district
Gyulavári, the son of a blacksmith from Baron’s Court. His talent was discovered at an early age. When he
turned 16 different paintings and works of art were submitted and presented in the cultural circles of the
town. He studied art in Budapest and then in Paris and Rome. Afterwards he returned to Hungary. According
to his testament, the artist bequeathed 692 paintings and 2215 graphic works to the town of Gyula,
most of which are on permanent exhibition in the gallery.
37

House of history of water and Cris River landscapes
The exhibition created by the Water Department WATER HOUSE area Cris is presented in a fun manner,
offering experience and useful information about landscape, waters, and natural values of the Cris region
and its spa baths to the public. There is also the possibility of organizing smaller conferences and temporary
exhibitions.
Combining elements of traditional exhibitions with that of modern means of multimedia performances, the
guests can virtually visit the Cris region by going up in a balloon, visitors can take part in a criminal trial of
a witch; can watch the atmosphere of old public baths or Turkish baths as known to the world. In the projection
room short films related Cris region can be watched, flood defense documents and maps of internal
waters and an exhibition of herbs and plant from the water area.
38

Day 2. – Sunday
WINTER
Gyula, a historic spa town with many open exhibitions, is inviting its guests during the first half of the second
day to visit two of the most prestigious venues. In the Gyula Castle, „history will take you by hand” - in
the only remaining flat Gothic brick building of the former Hungarian Kingdom, 24 exhibition halls show
how the prison of the castle, the baker’s shop, the dispensary, the blacksmith’s and the potter’s yard looked
like. Guests can find out how the castellan and the chatelaine lived, how different the office of the Turkish
leader was in comparison with the Hungarian one or what weapons they fought in the past centuries. Following
the visit of the castle, our guests are invited to view our town’s most recent and extraordinary exhibition,
aligned also to the highest European standards, the site of the Visitor Information Centre of Almásy
Castle. “Storyteller Castle” - Almásy Castle offers with the help of the 21st -century interactive technology an
experience of discovery. In the wonderfully restored mansion, our guests can not only get to know the lives
of the noblemen, but they also find out who lit a fire in the fireplaces, how many liters of water were consumed
was their daily tasks – and after all, where and how did the servants live? How was to be a servant in those
times? How did it feel to put your entire life in the service of a noble family and by being invisible make their
life more comfortable? All the important information regarding entrance and guided tours can be found at
www.gyulavara.hu and www.gyulaikastely.hu
As an evening program, we recommend our Adventure in the cellar program. We offer an exhilarating adventure
in the form of a release game out of a room in the basement, an exciting experience and full of obstacles,
offering moments of suspense for everyone without fear or terror elements. The idea of the game is
to manage to free yourself out of a specially designed locked basement room without using physical force,
simply by solving logical tests. Puzzles, brain teasers, riddles and various locked padlocks will stop your way,
but pair work coordinated and combined with intelligence it can lead you to success!
Adventure in the cellar program operators can add by request and even personalise the game with romantic
elements – which by doing so, could turn out to be the perfect event for a very special and unforgettable
marriage proposal!
During winter time some couples prefer to stay indoors, so for those who are not so keen on adventure,
instead of taking part in the Escape cellar room program, we offer the choice to opt for hotel spa services,
sauna, Jacuzzi or to benefit from a magically refreshing aromatherapy massage.
Castle Spa and AquaPalace
It provides perfect entertainment, in all seasons, for visitors of every generation who look for recreation.
Here, they will find it. The deservedly famous four-star baths at the Gyula Castle Spa pamper, relax, exercise
new family water park. The separated unit has been furnished with a microwave oven as well as changing
If the children get tired of exploring the water world, they can gain new experiences on the playgrounds
designed for the little ones and young teenagers, respectively.
53

54

56

57

Gyulavári Castle
The idea of creating a visitor center at Castle Gyulavári started from the desire of renovation, conservation
and rehabilitation of the region and the importance of present values, environment, nature, craftsmanship,
culture and ethnography. All these are also reflected in this residence of the former nobility. In other words,
make them known to visitors who past these lands and prove them that the quality of rehabilitation and
renovation in order to evoke the past and transfer it into the present and future, the cultural development is
worth investing if our goal keeps growing. Our goal is to strengthen the knowledge about the Great Sothern
Plains Region, to demonstrate not only towards our local population but also to our guests and visitors, that
our ancient roots are full of importance to the people who live now on these lands, to strengthen the sense
of national identity and its importance, to increase the filing of love and appreciation for their native land.
Only by increasing this part, we will be able of economic development and cultural prosperity.
Based on this line we chose topics and organize exhibitions in the Gyulavári Castle, upcoming programs and
events, which we try also to include in our local tourism offer.
Three major concepts try to unite the ideology of the castle: tradition, culture and continuous development.
This triumvirate is a logical result of the concept and hopefully we will succeed joining culture with tradition
and development in the following years. The tradition is celebrated in an exhibition of Hungarian artisans
and craftsmen by presenting handicraft and art crafts of various minorities that live from their work and
influence these places. Gyulavári Castle awaits you in a fabulous and romantic environment, in a beautiful
park named PICK NICK where you can taste various genuine Gyula products, homemade foods and goods.
You can find them all in one basket, and even our first eco beer can be tasted here.
58

Exhibition of Radio History
This private exhibition having come into existence first in Hungary gives an inspection into the history
of the most exciting epoch (1925-1938) of the octogenarian Hungarian radio broadcasting in a museum
framework.
Upon request, we cook in billycans or
make grilled dishes.
and if someone chooses to enjoy the active programs, we recommend the possibilities offered by the
Békés-Dánfok Resort (canoeing, canoe-kayak), horseback riding fishing, hiking, cycling and water tours
options.
In Békéscsaba you can visit the Slovakian Landscape House as well as the downtown - the largest Lutheran
church in Europe can be seen here - and Békéscsaba is also an excellent choice for horseback riding and
fishing, walking, cycling and water hiking activities.
74

76

77

78

79

80

81

Exhibition of Radio History
of the most exciting epoch (1925-1938) of the octogenarian Hungarian radio broadcasting in a museum
framework.
84

thanks to the donations made by peasants from the Gyula area, this farm museum was founded. This land is
Introduction
Let us stroll down memory lane and go on a virtual sightseeing tour in Békéscsaba, a place you’ll want to return
to. The name of Békéscsaba is of Turkic origins, the town name deriving from the Hungarian male given name,
Csaba. The environs of Békéscsaba have been inhabited since ancient times. A huge number of archaeological
finds from the late Bronze Age attest to the Alföld (Lowlands) culture and the people of the Körös Valley in the
area, which was later to become today’s Békéscsaba. The first settlers, who arrived at the invitation of Baron
János György Harruckern in 1718, were mainly from Nógrád, Gömör and Hont Counties. The diligence of its
inhabitants turned Békéscsaba into not just the county’s geographical centre but also its economic centre. In
1950 Békéscsaba received county seat status as a result of the administrative reorganization of counties. In the
2000’s, new investments occurred in Békéscsaba, one of these is the Csaba Center, the county’s shopping mall
with its spectacular architectural design and a wide selection of shopping, leisure and entertainment facilities.
The completely renovated Árpád Thermal Bath and Spa – with its historical main building, modern pools and
health protection services – offers visitors both sports and leisure opportunities, the whole year round. One of
the most popular meeting points for both residents and visitors is the bank of the Élővíz Canal, which is lined
with statues and along which one can take leisurely strolls. As a native of Békéscsaba, I still cherish childhood
memories of cycling, climbing tall willow trees, collecting fragrant horse chestnuts and walking along the idyllic
bank. The city also has a rich architectural heritage, a fine example of which is the Lutheran Church the largest
of its kind in Central Europe. Other buildings of architectural merit include the Small Lutheran Church right
across from it, István Mill, the Slovak Museum (a dwelling house turned into a skanzen-type building) as well as
the period piece edifices of the Town Hall, the Fiume Hotel and the Jókai Theatre. As a centre of gastro-tourism,
CsabaPark opened in 2014, has been established to preserve the tradition of the csabai sausage.
91

Introduction
Gourmets can also enjoy the specialties of Békéscsaba, where late October has become famous with festive days
dedicated to sausages combined with fair and musical events. An international tourist attraction, the Csabai
Sausage Festival that has been organized since 1997, has become one of Hungary’s major gastronomic events
attracting over a hundred thousand visitors each year. Békéscsaba also hosts Hungary’s most popular beer festival,
where mouth-watering delicacies can be found which also includes barbecued pig’s trotters. Culture buffs
will not feel disappointed either. As it is well known, Mihály Munkácsy lived and worked in the city for a long
time. The painter’s home is a memorial house now alongside with the city museum both commemorate the world
famous painter-genius. A stroll in the Munkácsy district takes you to the Csabagyöngye Cultural Centre, which
-with its multifunctional rooms- is an ideal venue for lectures and concerts. Békéscsaba’s rich cultural life has something
to offer everyone in terms of leisure. I do hope that, after this short virtual tour of the city, you will also
visit us in person to experience the hospitality of the local residents, marvel at the unique beauty of the city and
its environs, enjoy the unique local food and in general, have a pleasant time in Békéscsaba. Finally, when you
are leaving Békéscsaba, remember that it is a place that welcomes you back. With a population of nearly 64,000
habitants, Békéscsaba lies along the southeastern border of Hungary, circa 200 kilometers from Budapest. The
city is Békés County’s most important communication hub, accessible by car and train and even by plane due to
an airfield in the vicinity. Historic buildings, a new cityscape, the environmental heritage and an abundance of
events and programs attract many visitors each year. Among the cities with a county seat status, Békéscsaba has
the largest green belt. It is dotted with parks, trees and flowers, pleasant promenades, the country’s nicest areas. A
lovely spot in the city is the Élővíz Canal arising from the Fehér Körös, meandering through the city and flowing
into the Kettős Körös. The Music Pavilion, erected in 1850 in Széchenyi liget (a city park) along the bank of the
canal, is a modern visitors’ centre with a fine layout for eco-tourists and nature lovers. The park is also the ‚lung’
of the city and ideal for having a short rest or taking leisurely strolls in an enchanting environment. The bank
of the canal is lined with statues of famous people tied to the city. Superb buildings in Békéscsaba including the
Fiume Hotel built in the 19th century, the Jókai Theatre and the Town Hall designed by architect Ybl Miklós.
The Great Lutheran Church -the largest of its kind in Central Europe- and the Small Lutheran Church -built in
1745- are landmarks of Békéscsaba. The Slovak Museum (a dwelling house turned into a skanzen-type building)
offers a glimpse of the former Slovak lifestyle. The other major contributor to the cityscape is the Roman Catholic
Church, a remarkable piece of brick Gothic style in Hungary completed in 1910. The Árpád Baths was built in
1922 and thanks to recent renovations now it has 10 pools and offer medical and wellness services in the heart of
the city. Gourmands can also enjoy the delicacies of the table in Békéscsaba. One of the best-known foods is the
smoked sausage that has the name of the city and Slovakian dishes, like strapachka. These are dumplings made
with potatoes that are browned in butter, and then topped with breadcrumbs, bacon, cooked cabbage, chives or
green onions or cheese. They are served as a separate course, as a side dish with meat, or can be the main dish as
well. There are also various kinds of cabbage soups and the famous plum pálinka (a traditional type of brandy),
which are a must for those who love to wine and dine. Visitors in Békéscsaba can choose from a wide selection
of quality gastronomic and cultural events all the year round. The Csaba Sausage Festival (in October) has become
one of Hungary’s most prestigious gastronomic events. It is a series of cultural events and entertainment
during ‚disznóvágás’ (killing a pig by the help of neighbours in a backyard and making sausages, ham and black
pudding). The true highlight of the festival is the sausage-making contest, where Hungarian celebrities also try
to give their best every year. We have open-air events in Békéscsaba including the Csaba Beer Festival, the Csülökparádé
(a cooking competition where different varieties of ‚csülökpörkölt’ (pig’s trotters stew) are prepared)
and Lecsó Festival (cooking thick vegetable stew which includes peppers and tomato, onion, lard, salt, sugar and
ground paprika as the basic ingredients). Every summer, the courtyard of the Mayor’s Office is the scene of ‚Városházi
Esték’ (Town Hall Evenings), which provides a series of programs featuring well-known artists. In every
third year the city hosts an international puppet festival. August is the time of ZENIT Young Musicians’ meeting.
Further attractions are the Spring Festival with heralding spring as its main theme, the Csaba Expo International
Exhibition and Fair, Scherzo (the National Festival of Musicals) and the National Festival of Solo Dancers with
renowned solo folklore dancers. Békéscsaba was also the birthplace or hometown of a number of people who
earned international recognition. Without a doubt, the most famous of them all was painter Munkácsy Mihály,
the city’s pride. The Museum of the Year and Hungary’s Most Visitor-friendly Museum in 2008, the Munkácsy
Museum has the largest collection of his paintings in the world.
The Csaba Sausage
The secret of the Csaba sausage lies primarily in the manner of its preparation as well as its ingredients and seasoning;
in short, it’s characteristics rather than the place where it is made. The sausages made in Medgyesegyháza
and Ambrózfalva, both lying in the Békéscsaba area and established by the original settlers of Békéscsaba, can just
as rightly be called ‘csabai’ as the one prepared in the town after which it is named. In fact, you can make Csaba
sausage anywhere in Hungary or the world if your ‘product’ meets the criteria of the Csaba sausage. It should be
added that Békéscsaba people prepare both thin and thick sausages, the Csaba sausage usually means the latter
one made mainly for consumption in the summer.
Like the wines of small-scale producers (such as kiskőrösi kadarka, which varies from one Kiskőrös small-scale
producer to the next, its taste, colour and alcoholic strength due to the soil, the wine cellar, the barrel, the ripeness
of grapes, the time spent on grape marc and the number of the occasions aeration (‘breathing’) occurs) the
characteristics of the Csaba sausage are affected by a number of factors, like the type and the age of the hog whose
meat will be processed, the quality and quantity of the red ground paprika and its proportion to other ingredients,
the wood used for smoking and how the sausages are stored. Overall, as we say in Békéscsaba: as many houses, as
many sausages! Nevertheless, there are fundamental criteria that all Csaba sausages are expected to fulfill.
First and foremost, the original sausage must be made exclusively from pork. No other type of meat is allowed to
use. However, meat must come from various parts of the fattening pig, such as the leg, the rib, the loin or rump;
otherwise the sausage will be too fatty or too lean. Therefore, in contrast with salamis, no additional lard is needed
for the Csaba sausage.
Old recipes for the Csaba sausage stipulate hog casings, i.e. the rectum and an approximately 1.5-metre long piece
of the connecting colon (called ‘kuláré’). This ensures that a treasured feature of the Csaba sausage, namely its
juiciness, is preserved. I this case the sausage will not be dry even when it is a year old, they say.
A key spice of the Csaba sausage is ground red paprika. Besides ground red paprika and salt, cumin and garlic are
also among the ingredients. Neither salt, nor cumin, nor garlic should be too conspicuous, as they may stifle each
other. They should blend with each other in harmony – with the color, taste and the spicy hotness of the ground
red paprika playing the main role. Hot spicy paprika is an indispensable spice, because the genuine Csaba sausage
should be hot or at least quite hot. At the same time, édesnemes (a type of red ground paprika) is also needed, as
it adds color to the meat. The original sausage is bright red and should also please the eye; it is never yellowish or
colorless. Smoking gives a special flavor to the Csaba sausage.
94

The Csaba Sausage
Once straw or cornstalk was used for smoking in open flues. Today, beech sawdust or corncob is used instead. To
sum up, the Csaba sausage is made from pork seasoned with ground red paprika. It is neither crumbly nor dry. It
is a juicy, spicy hot and bright red cured delicacy that has a slightly smoky taste.
The Csabai sausagefestival
Held in October and organized in celebration of the Csaba salami, it is one of the most prestigious gastronomic
events in Hungary cherishing the traditional values of sausage-making, while offering a wide variety of entertainments.
In addition to folklore and the most treasured traditions of gastronomy linked to “disznóvágás” (killing
a pig by the help of neighbors in a backyard and making sausages, ham and black pudding from it), a series of
fringe events including workshops, gastronomic events, tourist exhibitions and similar other programs are added
to the festival.
The Csaba Sausagehouse
The Csaba Sausagehouse, operated by the Csaba Event organizer Ltd. opened its doors in January 2015. Tha main
objectives are making the sausage popular as a Hungarian unicum and introduce it as a main attraction in the
region. The available area is under geographical area protection, it consisits of a 500 m2 building and its yard. We
would like to maintain interests towards our sausage and the sausage festival all year long by permanent exhibitions,
sausage making education and pig killing shows. Our guests can actively participate in these programs.
A Csaba Beer Festival
Held since 2001, the Csaba Beer Festival offers leading Hungarian breweres an excellent opportunity to promote
their more recent products, while also offering well-known and popular beers which are already on the market.
The main organizer of the event held in June is Bora Kft., a Hungarian company.
CsabaPark
The Csabai sausage and the CsabaPark
Sausages and the Csabai Sausage Festival are what first come to people’s mind when they hear the name of the
town Békéscsaba. This is no mere coincidence, since Békéscsaba is the capital of sausages. The Csabai sausage
is a world famous Hungarian speciality and the Sausage Festival is the biggest gastronomic event in the region
applying the traditions of sausage making art. Locals are deservedly proud of both. The original, genuine Csabai
sausage is a traditional folk product. It is a unique accessory of local life to which folk work process and
custom are attached.
Sausage Courtyard Visitor Centre, Event Hall
Each and every part of CsabaPark’s Sausage Courtyard Visitor Centre is attached to the town’s famous product,
and to its past and present in a myriad of ways. The exhibition area of the Sausage Museum presents the history
of sausage making art and the traditional equipment by the help of a modern, interactive system. The pork
processing and sausage making procedures used nowadays are presented to visitors at the sausage workshop
and visitors have the chance to interactively join and be part of the sausage making process. Pork products
manufactured in a traditional way are on sale in the Meat Shop. The restaurant providing seats for 100 guests,
offers a wide range of traditional Csabai dishes for connoisseurs (bloody sausages, sausages, pork offal mix,
Kiszely soup). The event hall with an area of 2,800 m2, a floor-to-ceiling height of 9.4 metres is capable of accommodating
600 guests, it is suitable for organizing events and team-building trainings.
Kitchen of Giants Theme Park
The Kitchen of Giants is the unique feature of CsabaPark. The theme park offers special entertainment for both
little children and adults. Visitors are provided to learn the sausage making process and the usage of traditional
tools in a funny way by the help of games combined with creative, unique skill elements. The life-size model of
the meat grinder and sausage filler -used for sausage making- are part of the exhibition, visitors have the opportunity
to try the smoking chamber -used for preserving sausages-, as well as the model of a maize storing unit.
Nature Study Trails, Petting Zoo and Fitness Park
The nature study trails located within the 43 hectare area of CsabaPark are giving opportunity to study the
forest’s flora and fauna both by bicycle and on foot. Besides the study trails, covered rest areas, benches, picnic
areas and outdoor fireplaces are set up, giving the chance to visitors to rest and relax. In addition, the petting
zoo and the open-air fitness park welcome guests wishing to relax and exercise.
The ‘small’ Lutheran church
At 1 Luther Street, it lies opposite the big Lutheran church. The oldest church in the city, it was built in Baroque
style in 1745. Its construction was commissioned by the well-known Lutheran bishop Sámuel Tessedik
(father of agrarian scientist Tessedik) to serve an increasingly expanding community in Békéscsaba. (Tessedik
was buried in the church.) Legend has it that Tessedik went to Vienna on foot to obtain Empress Marie Therese’s
permission for the construction. A transept was added to the building in 1773. Its massive tower was the
country’s first Lutheran church tower made of stone. (The occupying Turks did not allow the construction of
stone church towers for strategic reasons.) Unfortunately, the contemplated remodeling of the church scheduled
for 1895 did not materialize. If it had, the tower would have been higher and Renaissance styled, and a row
of ornamented columns would have been erected outside the gate. A huge dome would have been erected over
the central space. However, the lack of money foiled the plans of remodeling.
The ‘big’ Lutheran church
The church is the largest Lutheran church in Hungary and in Central Europe. The building is truly impressive
in terms of size, balance and ornamentation. It has a three-leveled tower with a clock, which is all together 70
meters high. It has a steeple with a star all together of 15 meters. The walls are puritanically white and green,
while the windows are blue. The space complete with seven arches, a special ceiling and a two-level gallery can
provide room for 5,000 persons. With a seating capacity for 2,500 persons, there are pews on the ground floor
and on the gallery running along all four walls on the first floor. There are simple benches for circa 1,000 persons
on the gallery running along three sides of the church on the second floor. Lőrinc Dunaiszky carved out
the wooden podium; he was a sculptor in Budapest at that time. The altar painting made by Leonhard Landau
(a professor at the Budapest School of Drawing) was stolen. It was replaced by another altar painting entitled
“Consummatum”, depicting the crucifixion of Jesus, by a local painter called Mihály Szeverényi on the 11st of
June in 2006. There is a group of sculptures of allegorical figures at the very top of the pulpit cum altar. The
allegorical figures representing Faith and Hope are kneeling in front of Love, who sits on a throne. They are
raising a heart in flames to God, advocating the truth of the gospel: “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these
three; but the greatest of these is love.” The ‘small’ and the ‘big’ Lutheran churches have become city symbols,
both featuring on the logo of the city.
The Lutheran Church at Erzsébethely
With the number of members of the Lutheran community in Békéscsaba on the rise, the need for a new church
to be built was voiced by the community in Jamina (a district of Békéscsaba). The church along Orosházi Road
was built between 1875 and 1876 under the supervision of Ernő Sztraka. An interesting fact about the church
is that the former altar of the ‘small’LutheranChurch, one of Békéscsaba’s oldest and most beautiful altars, was
moved here.
Greek Orthodox Church
The Greek Orthodox Church amidst the blocks of flats on the housing estate along Bartók Béla Road is an
interesting spectacle. Built by members of the Greek orthodox community between 1837 and 1838, the church
is still adorned with the iconostasis from Siklós, a town in Southwest Hungary. The church is home to Greek
orthodox religious ceremonies.
István Mill
Industries in Békéscsaba were based predominantly on agricultural production. By 1818, 45 mills were operating
in the city. The first steam-powered mill was built in 1853. By 1930 it had become the country’s most
important steam-powered mill. Located along Gyulai Road, it is no longer operating.
Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church
The Roman Catholic Church in Erzsébethely (Jamina) was destroyed in World War II. The new church was
consecrated and opened to the religious community in 1993. Painted by László Patay, the 500-m² secco of the
church depicts 530 persons including biblical and well-known historical, public and ecclesiastical figures.
The Fiume Hotel
Situated opposite the Town Hall, evoking the style of the turn of the century, the Fiume Hotel is a reminder
of the middle-class lifestyle that existed in the second half of the 19th century. Designed by Ernő Sztraka, it
was built in a neo-classicist style between 1867 and 1868. It was named after the Nagyvárad (today’s Oradea in
Romania) – Fiume (today’s Rieka in Croatia) railway line, which used to cross the county. The former name
of the hotel was ‘Csaba’.
school and corporate events, balls, wedding receptions, concerts and cultural events.
Protestant Church
Severely damaged in World War II, the church built in 1912 was renovated in 2002. The old window panes
were replaced with leaded stained glass panes designed by Mihály Szeverényi. The new panes depict the most
important motifs of the reformed church like the tree of life, stars, the Holy Bible, chalices and doves.
Roman Catholic Church
Proceeding from Kossuth Square to St Stephen’s Square, we find the brick, neo-Gothic, twin-towered Roman
Catholic church, which acquired its current form in 1910. The church was consecrated by Antal Fetser, prebendary
of Nagyvárad (today:Oradea) on the 12th of June in 1910. Featuring three naves and a transept, the
church is 50 meters long, with the nave and the shrine both measuring 34 meters in width. The total length of
the tower (including the cross) is 61 meters. The church was made from red brick and it has a slate-covered
roof.
City Court
Inaugurated on the 10th of January in 1927, the city law court designed by Ferenc Orbán is on the corner of
Árpád sor and Deák Street, along the Élővíz Canal. Sculpted by Attila Mészáros, a sculpture of Lady Justice
stands in the front yard of the building. Lady Justice is not wearing a blindfold. The sculpture was inspired by
‘Spring’ by Alphonse Mucha.
The Jókai Theatre
Adjoining the Fiume Hotel is the Jókai Theatre in Andrássy Street, the pedestrian street. Built in an eclectic
style between 1877 and 1879, the recently renovated theatre also offers a spectacular courtyard. Designed by
architect Andor Halmai, the building also has a ‘Vigadó’, a place for major cultural and social events, on the
first floor. The theatre with seating room for 640 persons has had a permanent company since 1954.
Railway station
Those coming to Békéscsaba by train arrive at the railway station at the end of Andrássy Road (formerly Vasút
utca -Railway Street). The new station building was erected in 1932-33. It was built by János Lipták’s company,
who was a construction contractor in Békéscsaba.
Town Hall
Defining the cityscape of inner city Békéscsaba, the Town Hall, designed by the city’s chief architect, Ernő Sztraka
and erected between 1871 and 1873, is at St. Stephen’s Square. Its Romantic style façade was designed by
Miklós Ybl. Overlooking two courtyards, a one-storey extension designed in the same style by the city’s chief
engineer András Bankó, was added alongside the originally U-shaped 125-year-old building of the Town Hall
in 1927. It was through this extension that the Town Hall gained its current layout, i.e. a building with an arched
courtyard. Offering a pleasant spectacle from the landscaped courtyard, the arches on the ground floor are
curved and those on the first floor are flat. The building overlooking the third and the fourth courtyards were
used to house stables, horses and automobiles; and the city’s firemen were also stationed here. The first room
of the Town Hall and the ‘weeping’ white mulberry trees in the neat inner courtyard are also an unforgettable
sight. The third courtyard is also the scene of entertainment events called ‘Town Hall Evenings’.
Mine lakes
The city’s largest clay deposits can be found in the south of Jamina, in an area with Kereki kertek and Kenderföldek
as its boundaries. It is no coincidence that the manufacture of bricks and roofing tiles in baked clay,
now famous all over the world, has taken root here. A brick factory was established by Suck & Wagner here in
1891, and another by Bohn in 1908. A by-products of clay mining are 21 natural mine lakes, the total surface of
which is close to 100 hectares, forming one of the most extensive natural water networks of lakes in the Southern
Great Plain. The depth of the water in the lakes varies, ranging from 3 to 10 metres; it is over 13 metres at
the deepest points in Lakes Fás and Csaba. In order to tequalize the water level, most lakes are connected with
culverts. The lakes are separated with earth banks of irregular shapes covered with narrow patches of reeds and
vegetation. The three largest lakes are managed fishing waters, with fresh supplies of fish provided at regular
intervals.
Széchenyi City Park
Boasting of huge trees, Széchenyi Liget is the continuation of the Little Park lying along the bank of the ÉlővízCanal.
A gift from Székelyudvarhely, Békéscsaba’s twin town, a special gate called “székelykapu” marks the
entrance to the park. It is a nature protection area; the park also has an open-air stage and has been available
for the residents of the city since 1850. It is used to be a cemetery, then it became the city’s entertainment area
with a brewery, a steam bath, a number of walk paths, pavilions, glasshouses and gardens. Although the park
was destructed by the 1888’s flood, its public service function survived.
Póstelek Parkland
Offering a trip down memory lane, the exquisitely peaceful parkland with its perfectly relaxed ambiance is a
main tourist attraction. Póstelek owed its importance to the Weinckheim Mansion built in the early 20th century
and the surrounding land, with a population approximating 1,000 at the time.
What had been left from the parkland ‒ a 14.6-hectare piece of land ‒ was declared a nature protection area in
1989. Special species, including some fine examples of purple beech, common oak and pedunculate oak as well
as the county’s largest forest oak are presented here.
Besides restoring the old promenade and landscaping the area surrounding the mansion, we provide barbecue
facilities and benches, and there is also a snug buffet bar at the entrance. Tourists can trek along three different
paths, with future plans including the establishment of a 1- and a 2-kilometre long jogging track for fans of
outdoor sports.
Póstelek constituted part of the landed estate of the Wenckheim family in the 19th century. Graf Károly Wenckheim
(1811-1891), a kaiserlich und königlich (K und K) chamberlain and hussar captain founded a puszta
(wasteland) village called Gerla-Póstelek in the eastern part of the estate in 1874.
He had a village hall erected and also employed a village judge and a village clerk. However, after the 1888’s
flood, the village became depopulated and defunct and was annexed to the village of Doboz in 1889.
Póstelek regained its old shine in 1895, when Gräfin Krisztina Wenckheim (1874-1970), granddaughter of Károly
Wenckheim married Graf Antal Széchényi of Sárvár and the Highlands (1867-1924). Krisztina was given
the approximately 4,300-acre, mostly wooded Póstelek piece of the estate lying near the family estate as dowry
by his parents: her father, Frigyes Wenckheim (1842-1912) from the Gerla line of the family and her mother,
Krisztina Wenckheim (1849-1924) from the Ókígyós line of the family.
Hiking around the Region
The environs of Békéscsaba are particularly interesting for anyone who would like to get to know the area
through physically active touring. There are a number of locations in the vicinity of the county seat which offer
experiences for nature lovers. Accessible by bike, on foot or by boat, they offer perfect relaxation for half a day
or a whole day, depending on personal choices and rhythm.
Following the hiking trails of the Csaba Round Tour past numerous spectacular sights, information points and
rest areas, one can reach the green areas in the immediate vicinity of Békéscsaba. The itinerary of the Csaba
Round Tour, for nearly its whole length, runs along the Élővíz canal meandering along the boundary of the city
in the shape of a horseshoe and ends at the Gerla backwater within the city limits
The canal, its banks lined with willow trees planted 200 years ago to commemorate its digging, flows on in
the direction of the city of Békés, running through the former farmsteads in Nagyrét. It turns in the direction
of Sikkony at Bandika-fa, a hiking destination popular with Csabaers for generations. At Sikkony it flows past
another - even taller - very old tree, a white birch called Cimborafa.
The very heart of the area, a quiet spot reasonably far off from the hustle and bustle of civilisation, is where
the Gerla backwater connects with the Élővíz canal at Sikkony, and where a road connecting Békés and Gerla
takes visitors back to Békéscsaba.
The Fácános (“pheasant”) and Nagykovácsi Woods along the road are pleasant sights. A stretch of the old
riverbed and the remains of the walls and foundation of a long-forgotten, but still visible, monastery are major
sights in the latter. A few kilometres from here is the village of Gerla, where both the cultural and natural
heritage of the Wenckheim Manson, now in ruins, and a few huge trees in what is left of the Mansion’s former
park are protected and cherished.
Its sights, nature trails, the services offered and the exquisitely peaceful parkland with its perfectly relaxed ambiance
all make Pósteleki Woods, which stretch as far as the boundary of Gerla, into a major tourist attraction.
Póstelek owes its importance to the Weinckheim Mansion built in the early 20th century and the surrounding
land, with a population of about 1,000 at the time.
Hiking around the Region
What is left of parkland ‒ a 14.6-hectare piece of land ‒ was declared a nature protection area in 1989.
Tourists can trek along several different paths that cross each other. Recent development projects have restored
the importance of the place as a high profile tourist destination.
Leaving the paved road that leads from the parkland to Békéscsaba at the Veszely Gardens, we can follow the
bank of the Élővíz canal again. Popular with athletes and hikers, the “runners’ corridor” as the paved hiking
path-cum-cycle lane is called runs along wooded patches of land shaded by thick foliage and stretches as far as
Békéscsaba, where the itinerary of the Round Tour ends.
The mine lakes and their environs in the Southern boundary of the city are also worth discovering, all the
more so as Szabadkígyós, once also part of the Wenckheim landed estate and lying at a distance of a mere 4
kilometres from the lakes, is easily accessible from here along well-trodden dirt roads in a nearly straight line.
Wenkheim Castle, the finest manorial house in Békés County with its impressive parkland and the Kígyósi
puszta (“steppe”) that constitutes part of the neighbouring Körös-Maros National Park and is studded with
kunhalom (literally Cumanian mounds or kurgans) are further major sights worth seeing.
Thanks to the system of longer cycle lanes, the result of recent tourism-related development projects, hiking
destinations that are slightly more distant and yet still in the vicinity of Békéscsaba, can be accessed safely and
comfortably. One such destination is the village of Doboz and its environs situated along the bank of the Kettős
Körös and embraced – on three sides – by what has been left of a former piece of wooded land with hiking
paths, nature trails and memorial sights of cultural importance. Within easy reach along the dyke of the Kettős
Körös River, the other destination is Békés, from where one can cycle back to Békéscsaba on a cycle lane.
Csabagyöngye traditions
Csabagyöngye (“the Pearl of Csaba”) traditions
Along with the Csaba sausage, Slovak food and fine pálinka, the Csabagyöngye grape, a variety that is regarded
as a Hungarian speciality, is also part of Békéscsaba’s rich gastronomy. One of Central Europe’s favourites and
the earliest maturing table grape popular in the Northern Hemisphere, it is grown in nearly all grape-growing
countries.
It owes its popularity to viticulturist Adolf Stark (1834–1910), who set it on course to global fame in the early
20th century. A migrant merchant born in Bártfa (today in Slovakia), Stark opened a hardware shop and a
grocery in Békéscsaba in 1859. Four years later he married the daughter of a local landowner and settled down
in the city for good. His house used to stand at 4 Széchenyi Street, where the Csabagyöngye Cultural Centre is
now. He learned gardening from the farming community of Csaba, discovered the untapped potential of the
industry and found both viticulture and viniculture a good investment. He planted his first vineyard in 1869
and soon established a rich collection of species. On an increasingly large piece of land of around 16 cadastral
holds he grew an annual 20,000 kilos of table grapes for sale. He spared no expense or effort to collect approximately
300 species of vine from farms in Hungary and abroad. There were a few that he bred himself. During
his experiments from the late 1880s he selected the strongest and earliest harvesting seedlings, which he planted
on large pieces of land with great care. It was grape breeding that made him famous. His grapes, fruits and
other products won prizes at various market fairs.
He bred two new varieties, which he grew for sale. One was Csabagyöngye and the other the Kossuth grape.
Although the latter also achieved fame in Hungary and abroad, only Csabagyöngye, this earliest–harvesting
table grape grown in Hungary and abroad for nearly a century, enjoyed global popularity. His first advertisement
appeared in the “Borászati Lapok” (Winemakers’ Magazine) in 1900. It promoted the seedlings of the
earliest harvesting muscatel variety available from the autumn of 1901 for 2 koronas per seedling…
Csabagyöngye traditions
After Stark’s death his plantation was no longer cultivated. Today Csabagyöngye is only grown in small vineyards
and private gardens. A street was named after Stark and a plaque was dedicated to his memory in
Békéscsaba. Hobby gardeners cherish his legacy and his portrait can be seen on one of the frescoes depicting
the history of the city in the state room of the Town Hall.
Experts agree that Csabagyöngye and the world famous Csaba sausage are of equal importance. As a tribute
to Stark’s work, and in order to preserve Csabagyöngye as a grape variety and present it in a way befitting it,
the city established a Csabagyöngye plantation on a 2-hectare piece of land between the Kenderföldek (hemp
fields) and Csaba Lake in 2011. Trees of indigenous Hungarian fruits were planted on another 6,000 m² piece
of land. Those interested can walk along designated trails in this model garden familiarising themselves with
these unique varieties.
Events, festivities and other programmes are organised at the visitor’s centre, where visitors can have a glimpse
into wine-making. The Stark legacy is on display in the memorial house named after him. As a result of the
city’s continuing the Csabagyöngye tradition, the first batch of grape pálinka was distilled in the autumn of
2012. Distillers hope that, like Csabagyöngye, the pálinka made from the grapes harvested on the plantation
will also conquer the world.
Békéscsaba managed to revive a nearly-forgotten tradition and thus create another product unique to Csaba.
So Csabagyöngye finally returned home after its victorious journey lasting a century and already at summer
harvest time we can toast each other with Europe’s earliest new wine.
Munkácsy and the town
The painter was an orphan, went to live in Békéscsaba from Miskolc at the age of 8. István Reök, his mother’s
brother, became his guardian, and no matter where life took him, his guardian’s place in Békés was always
home for Munkácsy. Gizella, his younger sister also lived in the town at Mrs Sarolta Reök Steiner’s place in
Gyula Street. The house is a Munkácsy Memorial House - a unique example of its kind – since 1994. “… this
pretty house stood at the far end of the town… Broad steps led up from the yard. On the other side, a terrace
looked majestically onto a large garden. My aunt, Uncle Steiner and Giza were already waiting for me on the
steps. They all embraced me, which immediately made me feel at home”. This is what Munkácsy wrote about
the mansion where he spent his first night in Békéscsaba and the very last days of his childhood. The building
where he had fine food and played with his younger sister in the afternoon now houses his lovely paintings.
Of the collection of his original works in the Hungarian National Gallery, 21 paintings that offer a glimpse at
various stages of his oeuvre are exhibited here.
Built in 1914, the Mihály Munkácsy Museum in the vicinity of the Memorial House contains the painter’s
relics and documents as well as the photos taken of him. One of the standing exhibitions, some of his paintings
and some relics are on display in the Munkácsy memorial rooms. The original of the painting depicting the
painter in ‘díszmagyar’ (a ceremonial dress worn by Hungarian nobility and later by other public figures) is
also on display in the Munkácsy Museum.
Unveiled on what is called the Promenade of Sculptures in 1975, another sculpture of him made by Tibor Vilt
stands on the banks of the Élővíz Canal. There is a memorial plaque marking the place where the house of cabinet-maker
György Lang used to be, in the street that was the first to be named after Munkácsy. György Lang
was the man who taught Munkácsy the trade of cabinet making. According to the legends, the tulip box which
is on display in the Slovak Museum in Garay Street was painted by Munkácsy during his apprentice days. There
is also a memorial plaque commemorating the painter in the splendid courtyard of the Town Hall. Another
plaque on the wall of the Fiume Hotel commemorates the painter’s last visit to the town.
Mihály Munkácsy about Békéscsaba:
“I’ve always found it fascinating that the views the town offers with its long, long streets and low, sprawling houses in a neat
row are like those along the rue Rivoli in Paris. In the middle, where the streets intersect, two churches stand facing each
other. Everything is wrapped in silence. There is a bell tolling melancholically…”
Békés, the town of bridges
110

Introduction
Welcome in the name of Békés town. Our town is the county’s eponymous town, at the same time one of the
oldest inhabited areas of the region. The location and facilities of Békés are mostly determined by its natural
environment and River Körös, which are attractive destinations form both the aspects of water tourism and
fishing. Our boat harbour and the adjacent Dánfok Leisure centre retain considerable opportunities in the
field of increasingly popular water tourism. The specialities of our gastronomy, especially the well-known
Békés Pálinka and sausage became the favourite of many tourists visiting this region. Our town, as the only
one in the entire country, has deserved the Biker Friendly Settlement title eight times. This recognition is not
surprising, namely professionals has been comparing Békés to the Netherlands for ages, because considering
proportions at least as many people ride bicycles daily in the town as in the Netherlands. Moreover the town
is encompassed by a nearly 18 km long standardized cycle path.
The “Madzagfalvi Napok” is one of the greatest feasts of our traditions and communities, which we organize
every year at the first weekend of September. Another outstanding event of Békés’ cultural life is the so called
Békés-Tarhosi Zenei Napok. The summer music festival reviving the traditions of the Music school of
Békés-Tarhos has been considered a series of events with national significance for decades. The Hungarian
Heritage Award winning one-time music school, attributed to the deeds of György Gulyás musicologist, has
been organizing this national event to cultivate the Kodály-heritage for more than 30 years. The current development
of Békés beside its natural and cultural values is also assisted by its thermal-water resources discovered
here in the first half of the 20th century. The high mineral content hot thermal water’s healing effect attracts
people desiring to get cured from remote places. I hope that you will also get acquainted with our settlement’s
sights and beauties. I wish you fine roving and pleasurable relaxation in Békés.
The thousand years of Békés Town
Our town’s territory has been dwelled for thousands of years, archeologists excavated Bronze-age and even
earlier artifacts. But our history after all begins with the foundation of state, when Saint Stephen (Szent István)
our king established the county system. The town’s and county’s name have personal origins, probably they
carry the first land agent’s name, Békés. In the middle ages our settlement was the county seat and the deanery
centre. In 1403 Békés and its surroundings were imparted into the Maróthy family’s hands, who constructed a
mansion house in the-present-day Kastélyzug. The county seat in this period of time was transferred to Gyula.
In the 16th century Békés became protestant (at first Lutheran then Calvinistic). In 1552 a noted reformer, Szegedi
Kis István founded a still existing school in Békés. In 1566 Gyula- and with this Békés too- got under the
jurisdiction of Turks, and remained as well until 1695. The end of Turkish era also brought the devastation of
town. During the liberator wars, then the decades of the Rákóczi war of independence, Békés got desolated. The
resettlement took place in 1711. Along the 18th century Békés turned out to be a prosperous borough, thrived
in population, occupied territory and public buildings as well. The three churches derive from this era and the
so called Nagyház aa well. The vast majority of population was Calvinistic, but the believers of other religions
were also affiliated. Initially Békés and its surroundings were treasury possessions. Later the Harruckern
family got them in turn for their services, from them through succession these were vested in the Wenckheim
family. In the 18th century the town already had all of its five districts. The danger of flooding meant a constant
problem, therefore in the 1850s the government besides other rivers, regulated River Körös, too. In this way
the new River Kettős-Körös was formed, then outside the town within an artificial water-course. By the 20th
century the downtown section of River Fekete-Körös narrowed to a creek. The urban section of the old River
Fekete (black)-Körös and the city image forming River Fehér (white) -Körös are together known today as living
water channel. In the 19th century the homestead farming form emerged firmly determining the town itself:
thousands of homesteads surrounded Békés. The decades of Dualism (1867-1918) were determinative from the
aspect of townscape. At that time the town hall, the grammar school, the Dübögő, the tenement house (Bérház),
the post office, the synagogue just as several still standing family houses were constructed, however Békés at that
time lost its city status: in 1872 it was proclaimed to be a grand municipality. During World War II with its 30
thousand inhabitants Central-Europe’s biggest village was Békés. During the Dualism the protestant population
always elected oppositional, independence party representatives. Battles neither in the First, nor in the Second
World War affected Békés, but hundreds of soldiers and civilians- primarily Israelite religion- lost their lives in
these years. After 1944 several settlements came away from Békés, which signify the current Bélmegyer, Tarhos,
Kamut and Murony. In the decades of state socialism farmers’ co-operatives were organized, as well as some
degree of industrialization also took place in the settlement. In 1969 our settlement got grand municipality title
then in 1973 it got back its city status. In the 80s and 90s the town centre obtained a new townscape with its
multi-storey, modern buildings, but also after 1990 numerous developments were in progress in Békés.
“The touristic triangle“ of Békés
The town of Békés, a one-time borough, has been known today as the capital of River Körös. The cool foam of
River Kettős-Körös calls the lovers of kayak-canoe sports to take part in hiking, the small boat port located on
the riverside in turn is waiting for people returning form an excursion. A few hundred metres from the port,
Dánfok is situated in a picturesque environment, which nearly six-hundred-metre beach attracts swimmers and
bathers. Besides river-waters, the swimming-pool of Békés is also available for swimming enthusiasts during
winter and summer.
The Dánfok Holiday Resort gained new momentum during the past few years. Thanks to its favourable location
it became a popular tourist destination for town dwellers as well: they take a walk with great pleasure in the tidy
park, have a rest in the wooden houses surrounded by shadow casting aspens, or just have a bath on the beach.
From the holiday resort at a distance of about 200 metres along River Körös the small boat port and boat lift
can be found, which provide not just boat storage opportunities for the ship-owners, but it is an excellent starting-point
of water excursions as well. With the help of boat lift the river’s lower- wild section becomes navigable
and ready to fish as far as the Tisza.
From the holiday resort towards the town centre the swimming-pool of Békés opened in 2009 can be found in
Körösi Csoma Sándor street. Within the facility a 25-metre swimming-pool and a training pool operate with
various wellness services: such as a hot tub, neck shower, water massage, and a sauna for 8-10 people satisfy the
demands of those who are seeking for some rest. The outdoor thermal-pool’s 39°C water is excellently suitable
for treating inflammatory and fraying joint diseases, rheumatic and spine diseases, furthermore for healing
gynaecological problems and skin diseases.
Békés Swimming-pool and Thermal Spa
In December 2009 the Swimming.-pool of Békés opened its gates to the public. Within the constructed facility
a 25-metre Swimming-pool and a Study-pool is available for the guests with additional wellness services. In the
study pool there are built-in leisure elements, such as hot tub, neck shower, water massage, in addition a sauna
and a vapour-bath capable of taking in 8 people are also dedicated to serve the guests’ convenience.
There is also opportunity for swimming courses. Water trainings, physiotherapy and baby swimming courses
are also held as required. A 10 x 10 metre outdoor hot-water thermal pool belongs to the facility’s territory,
which has been usable since 2011. The thermal water of the renewed spa- which is the oldest spa of the county
and which was pronounced to be thermal water in 1943- is provided by two wells. The sodium- hydrogen –
carbonated water’s significant organic- silica and its small amount of iodine content support healing and regeneration.
According to the study of the National Institute of Environmental Health the thermal water of Békés
is excellently suitable for treating inflammatory and fraying joint diseases. It helps the recovery of rheumatic,
hip-, knee-, ankle- and spine diseases. In a modern environment, the Békés Sub-Regional Complex Outpatient
Care Centre, which was also handed over in 2011, is waiting for those seeking their recovery. In the building of
the renewed spa besides thermal water, a 34 Co movement pool, a 36 Co sitting pool, as well as a weight bath,
The “cyclist-friendly” Békés
The cyclist-friendly settlement award has already been won eight times by the Local-government of Békés so far.
In the settlement an exemplary cyclist infrastructure was built in the past few years. Within the downtown of
Békés four interconnected cycle paths run, and currently more than 18 km long safe cycle-path network secures
the safe traffic of population and tourists going through the town on bicycles. In Békés several times annually -
mostly from spring to autumn- visitors can encounter with cyclist initiatives.
The necessary services for cyclists are available on the premises, thus complex bicycle services are provided by
the Dánfok Holiday Resort as well. Among other things there are opportunities for renting bikes, servicing,
organising tours and guided tours. Within the centre of town currently two enterprises function as basic cyclist-friendly
service providers. From the settlement the neighbouring Mezőberény and the county seat is also
reachable on cycle-paths. By going-over the spectacular tour paths you can get acquainted with the world of
Körös, and the region’s many natural and cultural values.
We recommend to anglers…
The headwater of the dam of Békés due to the summer bloated water level (April to November) is excellent
fishing water, mostly for fishing placid fish. The town section of down-stream depending on the water level is
a good choice for catching both herbivorous and carnivorous fishes. It is worth visiting the so called Krisztina-Zug
(nook) starting at the city precincts. From the Békés small boat port both the headwater and the downstream
are accessible. The dam and its immediate surroundings are beloved section of spin fishers.
Gastronomy of Békés
Have a taste of Békés!
Békés is famous for its basket weaving and mats products. The Békés szilva palinka is listed as a Hungaricum
(traditional Hungarian origin protected products) in the world, the meat products- such as the sausage- in this
region are the most delicious. In the town more and more people deal with bio-production. We can highly
recommend the excellent quality products of the enterprises of Békés to our visitors’ attention. One of our
country’s most prestigious and biggest cultural and gastronomic event in tradition is the Sausage Festival of Békéscsaba
at the end of October. At the festival Békés is always represented in an honourable way. Our town lies
10 kilometres from Békéscsaba, so for the duration of the festival for those who visit there we are able to provide
excellent accommodation facilities.
Békés Town can be rightly proud of numerous local producers and local products. It’s just enough to mention
the noteworthy palinka, the sausage, the plum marmalade, or among professions the basket-making. Thanks
to the size and quality of the land area of Békés the number of farmers and small manufacturers is really significant,
who sell their locally produced vegetables and fruit at the local market. So if someone desires the “real
tastes of Békés”, then his or her way can only lead to the town’s market. Here you can confidently sort out of the
tasty and colourful products.
We can recommend benevolently the rightly famous homemade and homemade type manufacturer products to
everyone’s attention: such as the protected designation of origin plum marmalade, cheese, homemade sausages,
various types of honey and honey products, bio- vegetables and fruit.
Naturally, those who take a visit to Békés, have to taste the crescent roll with plum jam made of short pastry.
When we have a taste of this small cake, our grandmother’s wonderful kitchen may get invoked within our memories,
with its atmosphere and the memories of sometime pig-slaughtering.
