Dubbed ‘The Great Lyttelton Red Rock Hunt,’ contractors have put out a call to residents to look through their properties for pieces of rock so the wall on the cnr of Coleridge Tce and Dublin St can be finished. City council project manager Richard Humm said contractors were running short of the volcanic rock needed for the external finish. “The cost of restoring every red rock wall is prohibitively high, but key walls around the town are being refaced using salvaged rocks. Unfortunately, we have run very short and urgently need Lyttelton residents to help us out by rummaging through their gardens, backyards or old demolished buildings to find pieces of rock that we can use to finish some of our key walls,” Mr Humm said. The team need 389 sq m of red rock to restore the wall. They’re after pieces that are about the size of a loaf of bread or bigger. It was good to see the cruise ship Europa 2 berthed in Lyttelton last week and the extra business its passengers would have generated for Lyttelton and city retail and food businesses and Canterbury tourism operators. The Lyttelton Port of Christchurch is focused on expanding its container and cargo operations, saying this is more profitable than the berthage fees it gets from cruise ships. Yet as a city council-owned company, LPC also has a wider responsibility to the city and regional economy. Discussions continue between LPC and the council about a dedicated cruise ship berth and how this is to be funded. Some 3.3 million people visited New Zealand in the year to March 2016. By 2022, this number is expected to reach 4.5 million. Tourism has overtaken dairying as New Zealand’s biggest earner. Many tourists are attracted by New Zealand’s spectacular landscapes and natural areas. Yet they contribute little to their protection and are creating significant people pressure in some areas. Akaroa is swamped by visitors when cruise ships visit and we had the first recorded outbreak of noro-virus in tramping huts in Nelson Lakes National Park this summer. I believe many tourists would be happy to help protect the special places they come to enjoy. The Green Party’s Taonga Levy would see international visitors pay an extra $18 on top of existing biosecurity charges when they arrive in New Zealand. This would generate $46 million annually on average, and $1.5 billion by 2050 to help the under-funded Department of Conservation control stoats, possums, rats and other predators so our endangered plants and wildlife can thrive. The Taonga Levy would help make Predator Free New Zealand a reality. The Taonga Levy would also generate about $80 million over four years ($20 million per annum) to help councils in tourist hot spots provide basic tourism infrastructure. Some communities with FUNDING: Cruise ships in Lyttelton generate retail and food business. a small rating base, such as in the Mackenzie Basin, are struggling to keep up with the cost of providing and maintaining tourist facilities such as toilets, camper-van dump stations and upgraded wastewater schemes. The Taonga Levy would help them do this. If New Zealand is to remain an attractive tourist destination, we need to do much more to make our “clean green” image real.
