PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding NICK CHEESEBROUGH has played a wide scope of leading roles – from the gentle Tinman in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to gambler Harry the Horse in musical Guys & Dolls. But never did he think he would play what is traditionally a leading lady role. The 19-year-old of Purau is playing a more masculine version of Lady Marian in a new adaptation of Robin Hood. “I didn’t think I would be playing a love interest anytime soon,” he said. A new production of the English legend was created by Daniel Pengelly for the city council’s Anthony Harper Summer Theatre production. And the Riccarton House grounds has transformed into Sherwood Forest as the tale of Robin Hood and her adventures is brought to the city. While most of the storyline remains the same, the show has a new twist with all characters’ genders roles being switched. Cheesebrough describes his reinvented character as a buff jockey sort of guy with a few insecurities. The former Cashmere High School student said his character is still the damsel-in-distress and the love interest of Robin Hood. “They meet by chance and instantly have the look of love and fall in love. Love at first site . . . then it is Robin saving him from the Sheriff of Nottingham,” he said. The show was inspired by 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Alan Rickman and Kevin Costner. Classic characters such as the infamous Sheriff of Nottingham is played by Carrie Green, Friar Tuck by Millie Hanford and Robin Hood by Sophia Benter-Lynch. Benter-Lynch, of St Martins, said it is an empowering play for families – especially for those taking their daughters. “Even though Robin Hood is a young woman she is still great at leading this army. People actually follow her and it is a great message to the youth of today,” she said. Both Cheesebrough and Benter-Lynch are members of The Court Theatre Youth Company. Originally from Portsmouth, England, Cheesebrough moved to the city when he was 10 and hopes to get into Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School based in Wellington. Benter-Lynch’s interest in acting was first ignited when she became obsessed with the film The Sound of Music at eight-yearsold. “I was like they are on stage they having so much fun singing and dancing and it is just like isn’t this just a dream job to be able to have fun for the rest of your life,” she said. •Robin Hood will run from today to February 19. Redcliffs School move • Noah Graham OPPOSITION TO Redcliffs School’s move to Redcliffs Park is continuing to snowball. Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board member Darrell Latham knows the relocation of the school is a difficult decision but says it is the wrong one. “From my perspective, Hekia Parata (Education Minister) has in many ways dealt the Redcliffs community a poisoned chalice.” From his perspective, the Main Rd site was the best location for the school and expert advice provided to Ms Parata proved it was safe, he said. He could not understand why the ministry had decided to move the school from Main Rd to an area that was susceptible to coastal erosion, contaminated land and tsunamis. The community was thrilled Redcliffs School would stay open, but it would come at a “tricky cost,” Mr Latham said. He said Ms Parata decided Redcliffs Park would be suitable as the new site. However, Friends of Redcliffs Park chairwoman Simi Desor said there was nothing wrong with the original school site. “The old school site is perfectly safe and perfectly fine to keep,” she said. “If the school is the heart of the community, that particular park is really the soul of the community and we would like to preserve the park.” National list MP Nuk Korako respects some members of the community have a preference for the original site but the advice received by the Ministry of Education points to Redcliffs Park being a better site for a school. “The ministry will be working with Christchurch City Council TREASURED PARK: Friends of Redcliffs Park chairwoman Simi Desor and her children Reva, 1, Jai, 11, Aneel, 4, and Priya Bartlett, 8, with member Chris Doudney. They want the park to stay as it is. to acquire the land, and that will involve consultation with the land owners,” he said. Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson reflected many of the views expressed by the community. She said there was no logical reason for the school to be rebuilt at Redcliffs Park. “There is no reason behind the [decision].” Redcliffs Residents’ Association chairman Chris Doudney is one of several people trying to fight the ministry’s decision.
