Controversial decisions
play role in Sumner loss

A DISALLOWED try and a sinbinning
in the final 15 minutes
proved costly in Sumner’s 14-25
loss to Burnside on Saturday.
With the game in the balance,
Sumner thought they had taken
the lead late in the match at
Burnside Park when winger
Wesley Mauafu dived over in
the corner.
However, the tide turned on
Martin Dodgson’s side.
The try was disallowed after a
touch judge spotted a punch at a
scrum leading up to the try.
“The confusing thing was that
they sighted the punch but they
couldn’t tell which player threw
the punch. Ironically, the only
thing we could see on video
after the match was a Burnside
player punching our guy,” said
Dodgson.
It only got worse for Sumner
with first-five Nik Cumming
sin-binned before full-time for a
no-arm tackle.
They didn’t have better luck
before kick-off with captain Joel
Rabbidge and Callum
Wisbey both ruled out after
pulling up lame in their warmups.
The last minute injuries
resulted in the club’s division
two head coach Peri Marks
receiving a last minute call up
and rushing across town to
make the game.
Dodgson is hopeful the two
injured players will be fit for
Saturday’s encounter with High
School Old Boys. Sumner will
also have the services of No
8 Dylan Nel after his return
from South Africa with the
Crusaders.

“That’s going to be a massive
boost. He competes every single
day and it was great to see him
get called over to South Africa,”
said Dodgson.
With High School Old Boys
dwindling at the bottom of
the Hawkins Cup standings,
maximum points will be
Sumner’s objective at Bob Deans
Field this weekend.

Young Sumner athletes
shine in forest relay run
YOUNG SUMNER runners
had a successful outing at the
weekend’s children’s forest relays.
It was a successful debut in the
event for the Sumner Chipettes
grade eight girls team, of Amelie
Clark, Abi Scott-Douglas and
Jade Majendie.
Each running a 1.9km lap, the
team took out their grade with a
winning margin of 2min 30sec.
They also finished first, second
and fourth individually with less
than 30 seconds separating
them.
Sumner’s grade 12 boys and
girls also did well, finishing
second and third respectively,
while the mixed 18 team,
comprising of Oliver Egan, 18,
Sam Clark, 13, and Lili Ovendale,
15, finished second overall.
The next race on the calendar
is the Jane Patterson on May 20,
which is the first individual race
of the season.
